s I write this in midNovember, we (the business community) are beginning to settle down again after the issues at INEOS, well documented in the National Media. Being the most connected and influential business membership organisation in Scotland, we were in a position to voice our concerns for our members and SMEs in the area, and we have been heartened by the positive response from senior politicians of all parties. We will continue to develop these political relationships in which we can represent our members’ interests. The situation, as we all know has now been resolved but it was a wake up call for all SMEs caught up in the supply chain. So before we forget just how devastating this could have been for a number of businesses, now is the time to be looking at your business, your clients, your marketing and your contingency plans should an emergency situation arise in the future. As we go into winter what contingency plans do you have to cope with emergencies which could stop you trading? We will be setting up a member to member contingency help and support register, and you can learn more on how to get involved on page 4. Other news is that the Graduate Recruitment Incentive 2013/2014 has now been officially launched. This initiative seeks to create 270 new, permanent jobs for small to medium sized businesses. If you are interested in learning more please register your interest at www.graduateincentive.co.uk or drop us an email at info@forthvalleychamber.co.uk This is your Chamber and we are all keen to hear from our members. Therefore, please feel free to contact me or any member of the Chamber team with your feedback or ideas. We would love to hear from you. I am sure you will enjoy this issue and look forward to meeting you at one of the events, and remember to enter the Business Awards. As they say “you have to be in it to win it!” – Good Luck!

BUSINESS NEWS
Let’s lead a business revolution Scotland’s champion of ambition Thinktastic’s Mike Stevenson speaks of bigger things to come
I
celand’s new national constitution crowd sourced from more than half the electorate, a billboard in Peru that converts moisture from the atmosphere into fresh drinking water, a Japanese seafood restaurant that fines customers who don’t finish their fish and donates the proceeds to the local fisherman’s fund. We are in the midst of a seismic change that will revolutionise how we think, live and work. Get it right and we leave this world in better condition. My mission is to ensure Scotland steps up and leads in this bright new future. Achievable? Yes. But first, we have to rid ourselves of a national tendency to ‘not get above ourselves’. We need new levels of ambition and a readiness to smash past the ‘aye been’ mentality. It’s time to tear up the rulebooks and think big and bold. History is on our side. In the mid 18th century Scotland was a hothouse of world-changing ideas and philosophies, prompting Voltaire, the French philosopher to say: “The world looks to you for all its ideas on civilisation.” Now, Scotland is on the move again. Inward Investment up by 16% - reaching levels higher than anywhere in the UK outside London, business start-ups rising and young entrepreneurs more ubiquitous than at any time in the past. Great news. But we need to raise our sights higher and widen our scope. Exporting should be a natural progression in many more of our business plans. Government support is there but the confidence isn’t. Brand Scotland has, it seems, more cachet globally than here. Our inability to speak in foreign tongues is a clear barrier. That’s why I would like every business to put languages in their talent development plans? We must broaden skills, raise horizons and release the curiosity and creativity of all our people.

BUSINESS NEWS
What we are witnessing around us is change that’ll dwarf the Industrial Revolution in its scale and pace. We are fortunate to have an emerging generation at ease with the advance of digitalisation and ready to challenge the business as usual culture. Shouldn’t we give them the opportunity and space to help reshape our business cultures and use their fresh perspective and skills to advance what we do? Digitalisation offers unprecedented access to a global market and free rein to spread ideas, create international collaborations and garner our collective ambition to make the world a better place. Consumer values are shifting fast and companies that genuinely position people and planet alongside profit will find a magnetic appeal. Others will be quickly found out. I believe Scotland has traditionally put honesty, humility, openness and a concern for the wider community at the heart of its business ethos. From Andrew Carnegie to Tom Hunter the notion of using capital gains to improve the human condition is in our DNA. Our mindset must be of a future that offers more to gain than lose. Opportunities abound and when we take the time and space to see them our energy levels rise and a host of new possibilities emerge from the mist.
I speak all over Scotland on the future and eyes consistently light up when I talk of the possibilities ahead. When we release people’s creative energies, encourage them to lead wherever they sit in the hierarchy and allow them to make mistakes we unleash a rich seam of talent. I am confident that Scotland is on the cusp of something great. The big question today is not ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to independence – that comes next autumn. It is this. Can Scotland lead on ideas to make the world a better place? I believe we can. It’s time to rekindle our passion around that aspiration.

BUSINESS SUPPORT
Here comes
Christmas...
A
t last, ‘tis the season for your television screen to become one never-ending advertisement for toys and sherry, interwoven with previews of blockbuster movies. Actually, you do not have to look too hard to find something else advertised constantly: summer holidays. Yes, it is time to start planning for 2014. Begin now. When you have finished reading this, make a start on your New Year’s Resolutions for 2014. It is traditional to make solemn vows about health and fitness, but plotting a list of good intentions need not be all about cutting down on
6
things you enjoy. Start with something easy, but bringing long-term benefits. Make a New Year’s Resolution to ensure that you are not paying too much for your fuel. Ensure that you never pay increasingly rising pump prices, by using a fuel card for all your diesel & petrol purchases. Bearing in mind that there are a lot of fuel cards out there and they are not all the same, decide to find the best one for you and your business by checking everything available on the market today. Sounds like a lot of effort, without knowing what the returns might be? Wrong. This is why we have The Fuelcard People as a strategic partner. They understand the market inside-out and, having an unbeatable range of fuel cards, can be
FORTH VALLEY • WINTER 2013
completely impartial. Call them on 0844 870 9736. They will ask a few questions about your requirements, and compare the market for you. The whole process takes just a couple of minutes. You should then be looking at saving up to 5p per litre on for diesel, petrol or both. That’s just the saving on national average pump prices, so it would be a saving of 10p per litre or more on motorway refuelling. Why should you leave this until New Year to resolve? Good question. Why not do it right now? Contact The Fuelcard People right now on 0844 870 9736, or visit www.scottishchambers-fuelsavings.co.uk/ forthvalley and start to make 2014 look a little better.

t’s either a feast or a famine, or boom and bust. The British media seem almost incapable of applying the term reasonable to just about anything – and especially the economy. The truth is though that following the financial and economic explosion of just five years ago, the global economy has in fact been healing. We can now see that, although there have been some awful economic stories emanating from many of the world’s mature economies, we have started to see some signs of improvement even in some of the darkest corners of the Eurozone. It was the Chancellor, Lord Lamont, who highlighted the term of “green shoots” of economic recovery, although in his case many of these turned out to be more like advanced mould. This time though if we carefully join the dots of all the key indicators and detailed surveys from the more respected economic and industry bodies, then we can definitely see a trend of improvement. Despite many commentators carping doom last year, global growth was around 3%, which although not seeming especially significant, is in fact the long term running average. This year it will be higher. Given how close we were to a financial meltdown just a few years ago, this is actually quite impressive. The key question though is what happens next? Firstly we must remember that the economy always has and will operate in a cycle. It can be longer or shorter but still
BUSINESS NEWS a cycle. This last cyclical boom was longer than usual and thus the pain of the bust was also deeper and more painful. However like any cycle, it will, and has eventually turned. Whether any of our politicians have done much to help this is a moot point though and suitable for some animated discussion over a drink one night. However in this recovery we have had one major issue of stimulation, and that has been Quantitative Easing (QE). Love it or loath it (as of course all good savers will appreciate) QE has pumped money into the system and has ensured that the money supply didn’t just drain into the sand. Whether this has been the saviour of the economy remains to be seen but it certainly provided cheap money to the UK and US (and more recently Japanese) economies which benefitted equity markets both domestically and elsewhere around the world. The trouble is then having provided this financial “stimulant” of choice, how do you start to withdraw such a support and remove dependency without causing a setback in confidence and growth? Mr Bernanke will be aware of what the US administration did in 1936 when putting up interest rates too early promptly pushed the economy back into recession again. So wise central bankers will tread carefully, and talk softly to nurture the markets into having the confidence that the recovery will be maintained. To look at the health of the corporate, the impression certainly seems quite positive, with good cash reserves and some quite positive forecasts. The next stage, which we are starting to see now, is the move of those corporates to start spending their cash reserves on deals and investment. More mergers and acquisitions are likely to be on the cards and that will be a positive sign. However we should watch for the clouds and danger and these could come from unquantifiable geo-political issues, but I would urge care to watch for the change in the cost of money as rates rise. This will be the acid test of the strength of the recovery especially around the financing for consumers with their mortgages and other personal debts. However where we have been, the skies are looking considerably brighter, and to expect to find an economic sky without clouds would be as likely as a sea without waves.
A unique Forth Valley event with Justin Urquhart Stewart in February 2014
Happy New Chinese Year
– welcome to the Year of the Horse!
T
he question is though, will it be a wooden horse (with some vengeful Greeks coming out of it) or a racing horse reflecting our recovering economy? How do you develop the next stage of the Scottish and global economy & how best can we all benefit from it? Where are the risks and how can we avoid them? We are delighted to be considering the answers to the questions above in an exclusive event with Justin Urquhart Stewart, who will be giving his personal analysis on the future of the Scottish economy. Taking place in the stunning surroundings of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Museum within Stirling Castle, this event is a not-to-be missed opportunity to hear one of the UK’s foremost economic commentators, and to put your questions directly to him.
A light buffet will be served and there will be the opportunity to tour the museum after the presentation. Places will be in high demand so will be limited to two per company. Please visit our website www.forthvalleychamber.co.uk to reserve a place.

A new venue for a new way of working
C
ompanies are experiencing a new way of working and renting the exact space they need following the opening of the £2 million Falkirk Business Hub. A four-storey, 27,000 square-foot, fully-managed business centre community, The Hub offers a completely fresh take on the traditional business centre model with its range of flexible business space on short and long-term leases, backed by a host of ‘in-house’ support services for fledgling and established businesses. The Hub’s co-working suite is a key feature for tenants – from ‘external’ companies to new-starts, or those based in the serviced offices. Mentoring, advice and facilities tailored to support businesses, regardless of size, are all in the lease package offered. As well as advice for start-ups, there will be a Wellness Centre where gym classes, physio services, medical and dietary support, plus traditional and complimentary therapies, will be available. Specialist events aimed at promoting professional and personal development are set to enhance the new-style, overall way of working. The Hub’s facilities, which are available to the general public as well as those leasing space, will include meeting rooms and a “coworkers lounge” while Jacks’ Coffee House is due to open in November. Even the way space is leased represents a different way of thinking for a business centre as tenants are offered
an “easy in, easy out” model of simplified agreements to suit individual requirements. Bellair (Scotland) Ltd's Managing Director, Alistair Campbell, the man behind it all, said the aim of The Falkirk Business Hub was to be what other business centres are not by helping tenants focus, for example, on their core operations, rather than be distracted by things that don’t come naturally such as accountancy or back office services, which The Hub can supply. “This is a contemporary business environment for small to large businesses as well as home workers looking for a desk for a couple of hours or days,” said Alistair, who has been involved in property development and investment projects over the past 35 years, particularly within the Grangemouth/ Falkirk area. “The 50, fully-serviced offices, of varying sizes, are available to let on short term licences or longer leases – totally flexible as to what the tenant wants. “Unlike conventional business centres we will be providing facilities and services to support networking. There is also the potential for co-working in an atmosphere where small businesses will not only locate but also meet to operate, to be creative and to grow. “We are very much at the forefront when it comes to using private funding in the urban regeneration mix, a factor that’s been highlighted and discussed in two interesting, major public reports recently. “Diversity and individual thinking can help change the face of our town centres, to get rid of the beleaguered clouds hanging over them. The Hub, I think, is a strong example.”
LONG TERM LEASE
The Falkirk Business Hub marks the regeneration of Grahame House in Vicar Street, which has been a tax centre, and General Post Office in the past. Twelve first floor offices are currently occupied – tenants include investment managers, solicitors, a printing company, a telecoms company, a beautician, a translation company and Falkirk District Council’s Townscape Heritage Initiative project office. Spanish language evening classes are running on Wednesday evenings and work has started fitting out offices on the second floor with the first tenants due to move in on January 6, 2014. The Hub is only a few minutes’ walk from the town’s mainline railway station and is within easy walking distance of the Bus Station. Extensive public parking is available immediately opposite with longer term parking available close-by.

Sit on a chair, feet flat on the floor, spine straight. Allow your shoulders to soften. Bring your awareness to your breath. Where do you feel it most? At your nostrils? Do you feel the cool air as you breathe in and the warmth of the air as you breathe out? Do you feel your breath more easily at your chest, as it rises with the in-breath and falls with the out-breath?

Perhaps the sensations of the breath at your abdomen are the most prominent for you, feeling your abdomen gently expand as you breathe in and soften as you breathe out. You may feel your whole body breathing. Wherever the sensation of the breath is strongest for you allow that to be your anchor for a few moments. Your mind will inevitably wander and that’s okay. Just gently notice it and come back to your anchor, your breath. Close your eyes for a few moments and try it.
You have just created some space in your day — and in your mind. Enjoy.

Partnership introduces pupils to college courses
A
n innovative new programme to encourage young people to experience first-hand the skills they might need for the world of work and an opportunity to consider applying to college once they leave school, has been officially launched. The School-College Opportunities to Succeed (SCOTS) Programme is a partnership between Falkirk Council and Forth Valley College. Young people will experience eight different subjects including construction; hair and beauty; engineering; business; care; fitness, health and exercise; creative industries and science. There will be an opportunity to focus on a specific area in the last eight weeks of the programme and pupils will also be able to work towards an Employability Award throughout the course. Within schools, the young people involved will work with teachers to improve their skills for learning, skills for work and skills for life. They will develop employability skills such as researching for jobs, creating a CV, preparing for interviews and also learn more about the “taster” courses and careers linked to the programmes they
are undertaking within Forth Valley College. They will also have an opportunity to gain an experience of the workplace to further develop their understanding of the working environment. Forth Valley College Principal Dr Ken Thomson, said: “This is an excellent and innovative programme designed to provide a really meaningful life experience for Falkirk’s young people. “The programme not only supports pupils in their career development, but also raises awareness for parents and teachers on the role of the College in developing employability skills and skills for work.” The main aim of the programme is to help pupils find out more about the different types of courses available at college and the employment opportunities and progression routes they can lead to. It may also encourage young people to think about a career path they hadn’t considered previously and can help make transition easier upon leaving school. Upon completion of the programme, pupils will be encouraged and supported to either apply for the Skills for Work programme if they remain at school or alternatively a full-time college course.

Trio triumph at The Prince’s Trust Youth Business Scotland Awards
A
trio of young people have been recognised for their achievements in business after receiving prizes at the Forth Valley Final of The Prince’s Trust Youth Business Scotland Awards 2013. Brothers Aoron (22) and Aidan (20) Campbell from Stirling won top place in the Regional Final and Kirsty Hamilton (21) of Balfron won a well deserved runner-up prize. Both businesses received their prize cheques and certificates at a ceremony in the Enterprise Zone at the University of Stirling Library, hosted by the University’s Student Enterprise Programme. The enterprising brothers run A Class Gardening Services. Having both previously worked in the sector, they took the step into self-employment in 2011 with initial support from Business Gateway in Stirling who put them in touch with The Prince’s Trust Youth Business Scotland. With a funding award from the Trust, they set about building their

business. Through drive and determination the pair have secured a growing number of domestic and commercial contracts including the building of allotment sites in the Raploch area of Stirling. A further application to the Trust funding panel this year allowed them to purchase more equipment and their plans include growing their customer base in the local area and beyond. Runner-up Kirsty Hamilton was only 18 when she became the proprietor of The Pirn Inn in Balfron in 2010 making her possibly one of the youngest publicans in the country. When she took over The Pirn, she was determined to ‘bring it back to life’. A key achievement has been her development of the entertainment side of the business. Kirsty has brought in live bands and musicians focusing on new performers, as well as local charity evenings, comedy nights and a very successful beer festival. One of Kirsty’s top priorities is managing staff and investing in their development to ensure quality customer care. She is continuing to develop new ideas and to promote The Pirn Inn in the local community.

They are great role models for other young people and deserving winners of these Awards.” Youth Business Scotland offers support to young people from the age of 18 who have a good business idea and cannot access funding elsewhere. A recent extension of the age range means that young people up to 30 can now apply - those in the 26-30 age group must be unemployed or working less than 16 hours per week. Assistance is in the form of advice, guidance, mentoring support and business funding together with tailored introductory financial training. O
ne of the services delivered by Forth Valley Chamber of Commerce is the New Enterprise Allowance Scheme, a government programme which assists unemployed people with mentoring, support and funding to enable them to start up their own business. The scheme has helped to create over 26,000 new businesses across the UK over the last two years and there have been many successful businesses created. One in particular is generating a lot of interest here in the Forth Valley, so we spoke to Martin Merrilees and James King of the Caledonian Cheesecake Company in Grangemouth, to find out their recipe for success. How did you get the idea for the company? James – “I had been working as a chef in a local restaurant and noticed that cheesecake was a popular item and realised a gap in the market for it, so I decided to start making my own and selling them to friends and family via Facebook. I met with Mandy at the Chamber and she helped me with my business plan through the NEA scheme.
26
Martin read a couple of my posts online and became interested in what I was doing so we met up and decided to go into business together.” Martin – “I had my own off-shore business at the time but was very impressed with what James was doing and his passion for the product. I decided to give up my business and invest in cheesecake!”
When you opened the shop in July, how many cheesecakes were you selling? James – “I baked 7 cheesecakes and we planned to sell an average of 2 a day in order to break even. We thought our main market would be supplying to trade and that the shop might just attract a few customers on a daily basis. However we couldn’t have foreseen how things were going to go in terms of demand…”
So how many do you sell now, 4 months on? Martin – “Over 200 a week! We sell 1,800+ slices a week as well as minis and full size. We met our projected annual turnover in the first month, and things just went crazy. Keeping up with demand is our single biggest problem at the moment and we usually sell out at some point during the day.” James – “We have to announce on Facebook on a daily basis when we are running out and we get messages telling us
FORTH VALLEY • WINTER 2013
Dark Grey = Pantone Cool Grey 10
that customers are on the way! We started out with two and half thousand followers on Facebook and that has grown to over nine thousand in the last few months.”
Does Social Media play a big part in your marketing strategy? Martin – “Very much so. We met through Facebook and we use it a lot to interact with our customers who post telling us what flavours they would like us to make and giving us feedback. They come up with some great ideas and if we are trialling a new flavour we get them to sample it and feedback so we can tweak it until they all love it. We did this with our Irn Bru flavour which is now a firm favourite.”
Irn Bru Flavour Cheesecake? James – “Yes, it’s very popular along with other “Scottish” flavours like fudge and tablet. As well as more traditional flavours such as raspberry and strawberry we do things like Maltesers, Bubblegum, Salted Caramel and Chocolate Popcorn, Nutella and Peanut Butter. We’re always up for a flavour challenge and have some great new festive ones rolling out soon in time for Christmas. Also we have a fun “build a cheesecake” option on our website where customers can create their very own combination of flavours and we produce a bespoke cheesecake. Great for parties and weddings.
What do find most difficult about running your own business? Martin – managing the rapid growth of the business is a real challenge. We never expected to have people queuing outside at 8.30 in the morning – some still in their pyjamas! – and the shop is so busy it’s hard to find time to work on business development. Locating affordable property to enable us to expand into other areas is also difficult as well as finding enough freezer storage to keep stocks high. However, now that we are a member of the Chamber we have been matched with a business mentor to help us, and that is going to be a great way of making sure we stay on track and don’t get carried away with our early success. Our mentor is restaurateur Alex Knight who owns several top Scottish restaurants, including The Riverhouse in Stirling, and we will learn so much from his success.”
And finally, what would you say IS the secret of your success? James – “The quality of the product. All of our cheesecakes are hand made using top ingredients from local suppliers. We are not about cutting corners or costs and we only produce a high-end, top quality product. We know the product is good by the amount of repeat custom we get and we intend to keep it that way.” Martin – “Also, we have a great staff team here who work incredibly hard. They are always cheery with the customers, even when run off their feet, and a lot of customers comment on that. It’s a great wee business and we are both so glad that the New Enterprise Allowance scheme enabled us to get up and running!” Alex Knight of The Riverhouse Restaurant commented, “I am delighted to be mentoring the Caledonian Cheesecake Company and am very impressed with the operation so far. Their use of social media is particularly strong, and I am looking forward to working with James and Martin in the future.”
Find out more about the Caledonian Cheesecake Company at www.caledoniancheesecake.co.uk (Editor’s note: In the interests of good journalism I had to sample the product……. mmmmmmmmm!)
Business Continuity – Are you prepared for the worst?
B
usiness continuity is rather like making a dental hygiene appointment – something that we know we have to do for our ongoing wellbeing but something that we put off while dealing with more pressing issues. We come to regret it when that previously well behaved tooth flares up into agony and we have to rush around trying to get an emergency appointment to deal with what has become a crisis.
Now apply that scenario to your business. If you are so busy dealing with day to day issues that you have no time for contingency planning, there are risks of serious disruption when disaster strikes. What if: • you could not get into your premises because of flooding, snow or a fire? • a major supplier went out of business or important pieces of equipment failed? • there was a loss of electrical power or problems with road transport or the fuel supply? • key members of staff were ill or unable to work? • you lose vital records due to I.T failure? Even relatively small disruptions can have serious consequences for cash flow and for your reputation if they are not well managed, but there are a number of straightforward practical steps you can take to: • reduce the likelihood of disruption occurring • lessen the impact on your business; and crucially, • speed up your return to normal trading
Practical steps for businesses Preparing properly for serious disruptions can help you and your staff to
be ready to implement an action plan swiftly to minimise damage to your business. Ask yourself, if something happened today: • Do your staff know what to do in an emergency and who to contact? • How long would it take to recover your IT systems if there was a hardware failure or if they became infected? Would you lose data? • Are all aspects of the business insured? • Are key skills and information held by only one or two members of staff? What if something happened to them? • How will you contact your clients and what back up plan do you have to ensure deliveries and contracts are met? From our experience at the Chamber, we have found that the first thing businesses need in a crisis situation is practical help – office space, storage, access to printers and copiers, telephones and computer networks, transport, and even just extra bodies to lend a hand with tasks from leaflet drops to snow shovelling! This is why we want to use the strength of the Chamber network to create a resource database for our members. We are asking you two simple questions: What would you need in terms of practical help to keep your business running, and what could you offer to fellow members in need? For example, one of our members can offer equipment to dry out flooded offices, another has spare desk space …. and so on. This should be help that you can offer on a temporary basis, ideally free of charge. If you want to be part of this resource base please email Michelle@forthvalleychamber.co.uk with your needs/help and details of who your key contact would be and we will make sure that businesses in the Forth Valley have immediate and practical help whenever it is needed.

There is a good reason why the College has nearly doubled its intake of students on its Modern Apprenticeship (MA) programme – the simple fact is we are very good at what we do! A total of 284 eager new recruits to the MA programme signed up with FVC for 2013/14 and their employers are delighted. We now hope to entice even more for next year. Unlike a lot of college courses (which would require learners to attend classes on a full-time basis), with the MA programme most of the learning will take place in the workplace – so candidates and employers can both benefit from a lot of hands-on practical training. Some of the programmes – typically between one to four years long depending on subject areas – will also require candidates to attend college on a parttime basis to learn the theory behind what they are doing, this is normally either one day a week or one full week every month.

Cyber Stalking Part 2
I
n our previous edition we ran a piece on Cyber Stalking from the perspective of the victim. This piece from Stirling-based business Net-Defence, looks at the issue from the point of view of those whose job it is to track down cyber stalkers. The advent of online social media is without question one of the great advances of the Internet, bringing people together across the globe and diminishing the restrictions of geography. We can marvel at how easy it is to connect with likeminded people or to reconnect with family and friends. There is no doubt social media has enriched our lives however, having worked as a Cyber Security investigator for fifteen years, I am surprised at how quickly my fellow Internet users take online relationships at face value, dispensing with the caution that they would normally adopt in real life. Having started my career in Government security you naturally become suspicious, question everything. It's mandatory in a security role and it’s from there I initially moved from providing specialist security services into the world of celebrity at a time when communication from those stalking their idol was evolving from the more traditional sending parcels and letters onto email, blogs and now Facebook and Twitter. Over the years I have worked on many cases which have led to a good understanding of the motivation and mechanism that leads to the stalking from the perspective of both the victim and the perpetrator. There are always two key camps in cases of stalking, the victim and the perpetrator and I believe it’s equally important to consider not only the victim but those behind the stalking. The rationale behind their actions may be a cry for help and at the very least needs better understood. I firmly believe that many of those who have subjected others to unwarranted online attention only do so online and would never consider such an act in real life. I have recently concluded work on a case where I was asked to assist law enforcement in tracking a stalker who was going to great

lengths to conceal his location through the use of specialist software. On his arrest he was utterly dumbfounded that he had been traced and that is one of the first misconceptions I like to clarify when asked to talk on the subject of stalking. You are never anonymous online even when you adopt software to conceal your location. I believe that those who perpetrate acts of cyber stalking do so in the belief they are somehow disconnected from the act, protected by a veil of anonymity, this is not the case. Similarly, those who have been the victim of cyber stalking have more often than not conducted themselves online in a manner they would never consider in real life. The lessons drummed into us in our youth of stranger danger are equally valid today as they were back then. In an incident where a client was stalked via Facebook the unwarranted attention could be traced back to an initial exchange of personal messages with another user that she did not know. When I asked my client what she would do should a complete stranger call her on her cell phone for a chat she immediately replied, terminate the call as I do not know them. This is a good example of how we communicate one way using traditional technology yet are more trusting online. In essence, whether we communicate online or via traditional means common sense must prevail. If anything we should be more suspicious of those we ‘meet’ online. How do we know they are who they say they are? No amount of pictures, friends or posts can validate an online presence. We should be suspicious until we can talk to the person on the phone or validate who they are through other means. We should be guarded over our personal information, who we are related to, our families, where we live, how we spend our time, our posts, pictures and videos. Finally, should you become the victim of cyber stalking its important to save everything, keep a record of all messages, posts and incidents. Do not become involved in protracted public or private discussions, in such instances you will not be able to relate to the perpetrator. Involve local Police or law enforcement; you do not have to face this alone.

Relationship Marketing
– the way to a profitable future together
I
n June I celebrated my 10th wedding anniversary. It’s incredible that I ever got married because it took me two years to ask Denise out. Our first date was a coffee and a scone, and from memory I didn’t, on that occasion, ask her to be my wife, discuss where we would live, check if she’d like children, or if we could call our dog Scooby. I’m told by people in kaftans and sandals who tell me that they know about relationships, that’s because what we were doing during those early dates was seeing if we were of equal status and if there was value in us spending more time together. Who knew? I just thought she had nice eyes. We all know how any relationship is formed; it takes time, effort, trust…or for some of us, alcohol. But we seem to forget these rules when we think about marketing and business relationships. Recently I got a call from a magazine who promised me untold fame and riches. In fact, the guy said, ‘You’ll probably be at the Bentley Garage in minutes’. All I had to do was place one little
ad to sell my consulting services in their magazine. Even though I knew better, I placed the ad and guess what happened? Well, let’s say a luxury car salesman was disappointed that day. No surprise really, it was the relationship equivalent of suggesting a week in Tenerife after the first date. Marketing is like building a relationship. You need to demonstrate value and trust before you suggest kids, dogs and a Landrover. So how do you do it? 1. Woo the customer with the sale before the sale: put together an information guide that helps your customer solve a problem and market that first. A farmer near where I live just sent me a guide about how to buy the right potatoes. He’s built trust and authority and is now my go to guy for spuds. 2. Get permission for another date: build a page on your website where people can swap their e-mail address for your free information guide and use your ads to send people to that page first. 3. Have multiple dates before you pop the question. Think of marketing as a multistep campaign. Plan for a minimum of 7-10 contacts leading up to 20 with a mix of useful information, and make an offer of a free sample or discounted test of your service.
4. Build in a prenuptial agreement. Always offer a get out clause, a full money back guarantee if the customer is not happy. 5. Get your exes to recommend you. Make sure all the information you send out has testimonials from current and past clients. Simple rules really, common sense but not common practice. And of course, much like a relationship, getting the client is one thing - keeping them is a whole different thing altogether…but that conversation is for another day. Until then if you have questions about marketing feel free to e-mail me at stuart@vanguardscotland.co.uk, However if you have questions about relationships please ask someone else - I honestly have no idea!

Freedom and Success at Kilgraston SUPPORTIVE, ACADEMICALLY successful and consistently in the top three Scottish Schools at Advanced Higher, Kilgraston is a truly thriving community. Two years ago, Kilgraston in Bridge of Earn, with a balanced mix of day girls and boarders, was UK Independent School of the Year. Judges praised it warmly as “an example to other schools”. From the 45 leafy acres set amongst rolling hills, to the swimming, hockey and tennis academies, Equestrian Centre (the only school in Scotland with on-campus facilities) and now the current £1m investment in a state-of-the-art Science Centre, Kilgraston facilities look and feel world-class. Principal Frank Thompson says: “At Kilgraston, small is beautiful. With small class sizes, we are totally committed to individualised care. We know every one of our 340 girls extremely well. Staff know who needs a little extra help or who needs to be stretched a little further.” Kilgraston is part of the Sacred Heart network of schools and welcomes girls of all faiths. It has four sections: Nursery (ages 2½ to 5), Preparatory (ages 5–13), Senior School (ages 13–16) and Sixth

Form. Boarders love being here, this is clearly evident thanks to a warm and supportive atmosphere - Kilgraston girls are not only taken care of, they learn to take care of themselves and each other. Dr Leonard Sax, a world-renowned expert on the benefits of single sex education, held a seminar at Kilgraston last month and told parents: “Girls at single-sex schools are more likely to study computer science, physics, engineering and technology and participate in competitive sports than are girls in co-educational schools. “That’s because at the co-educational school, the focus is on how you look. But at the single sex school, the focus is more on who you are. The best possible thing you can do to help your daughter is to get her into a girls’ school.” www.kilgraston.com To visit Kilgraston, please call (01738) 812257. COMPUTER SUPPORT FROM A 10 YEAR OLD!
CUTTING-EDGE SERVICES combined with flair and an expert team of dedicated staff have continued to place this small Scottish company ahead of the pack in the highly competitive world of Information technology. Directors of Lithium Systems, Stephen Franklyn and George Aitkenhead (pictured) are currently celebrating 10 years at the helm of IT support company Lithium Systems Limited. Over those years they’ve grown from two engineers working locally, to a national support company with highly skilled engineers providing clients with a fully managed outsourced IT service. “After starting the business, we had no idea how challenging it would be but we’ve loved every minute of it and we’re proud of our achievements.” explains Stephen. Both coming from an Engineering background Stephen and George have always been keen to embrace new technologies and this is clearly visible over the 10 years that Lithium has been in business.

Advancements in technology such as server virtualisation has given their clients access to performance and features unheard of 10 years ago and they are now turning their attention to the cloud. “Although we are both self-confessed Geeks, Stephen and I have always gone to great lengths to ensure that clients understand their I.T without the need for a Degree in Computing!” explains George. Lithium prides itself in the relationships formed with some of the world leading I.T suppliers such as Intel, Dell & Microsoft. This allows them to offer the best possible solution from the bewildering array of services on offer: in-house Server installation to a Cloud-based collaborative solution and everything in-between. Their new HQ in Alloa is geographically significant as they can despatch an engineer and be in either Glasgow, Edinburgh or Perth in around 30 minutes, an essential element of their fast, efficient support service.

a few minutes drive from the M9 motorway and in close proximity to the Falkirk Wheel, Callander Park, the Falkirk Stadium and the Helix (Falkirk’s new eco park)! All our cheesecakes are handmade by our fully trained chef, using only the finest ingredients which are locally sourced wherever possible. We feel this gives our cheesecakes the edge over our competitors. If you’re looking for an alternative to the sponge birthday cake or wedding cake or if you just want a slice of cheesecake you know where to come. We only create cheesecakes and this is a passion of ours so why not pop into our shop and buy a slice or two!
