s we approach our first anniversary I would like to thank David Gardiner the previous Chief Exec for all of his hard work in getting the Forth Valley Chamber of Commerce up and running so successfully. I am sure he would be the first one to agree that it couldn’t have been achieved without the tenacious support of the staff, the Board and more importantly all of the businesses that have joined as members and Premier Partners. Without their support it would not have been possible. I am very pleased to return to the Forth Valley and am looking forward to working with you all over the coming months. We have a number of very relevant business events lined up for you, beginning on 21st August with a networking lunch at the Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum with speaker Mike Stevenson of Thinktastic, followed on the 18th September by a networking lunch hosted by Forth Valley College in Alloa where the speaker will be Stephen Ng from Cubic Blue sharing some top tips on generating leads and winning sales. On the 27th September at Stirling University we have a half day event “Improve Your Business Productivity” by John Paterson of Evolutio who will run a practical demonstration showing you how it is possible to improve your business productivity at virtually no cost by using FREE software solutions. Who says you can’t get something for nothing? For full details of these and other events as well as how to book please visit our website www. forthvalleychamber.co.uk I am also delighted to announce that we are going to be hosting the inaugural Forth Valley Business Awards in March 2014 at the MacDonald Inchrya Hotel in Polmont. This is going to be a prestigious event and one not to be missed. You can find out more details on how to enter as well as sponsorship opportunities on pages 20-23. As mentioned in the last edition we are delivering the Business Mentoring programme throughout the Forth Valley. This free service is available to growing businesses with a turnover of £100,000 or more. If you meet the criteria, would like some support or would just like to know more about it, please do not hesitate to contact us. Read how the scheme has helped one local business on pages 26-27. This is your Chamber and we are all keen to hear from members on what works for you and what doesn’t, therefore please feel free to contact me or any member of the Chamber team with your feedback or ideas. We want to hear from you! I am sure you will enjoy this issue and look forward to meeting you at one of our events.

Stalking –
Not my business!

FORTH VALLEY • AUTUMN 2013
C
yber stalking and unwanted online communication can deeply affect a business owner. It can leave them open to accusations about their business's legitimacy. It knocks a person’s confidence because comments can be not only about their looks but about their communication style, their website and the organisations they are working with. To some people their business is their heart – it is the 2nd love of their life. It comes only second to their family. Corporate Stalking can ruin a person’s confidence so badly they consider walking away not only from social platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook but from the business itself. How do I know all this? Because for the last 10 months I have had a corporate stalker. In September 2012 I met with a man with a view to delivering some partnership work. There was no formal agreement between us and within 8 weeks I terminated my plans to work with him as
it was becoming clear he was not who he said he was and I was increasingly uneasy about his motives. Angry at being “dumped” professionally he started to harass and abuse me online, mainly through Twitter and LinkedIn. I realised the tone, content and style of his contact was identical to the two specific “trolls” and other stalker I had picked up several weeks before. They were all one person – this now ex-business contact. He had been stalking me before we even parted ways – when I believed we were friends. Immediately I “outed” him online and although all personal contact stopped, the faceless, cyber based and phone based contact continued up to June this year. The police could do nothing as he was excellent at remaining anonymous. We knew who he was but could not prove it as he hid behind online accounts and several different aliases. I had stopped responding, or fighting back as I saw it, in February and this loss of my attention pushed him over the edge. He then slipped up by calling me on a displayed mobile number in late March, threatening my life and business, and sending me 24 similarly worded texts. At that point we had a link between my anonymous stalker and him. This mistake
PAGE cost him dearly and he wasHEADER finally charged with harassment on June 6th. With social media being increasingly accessible and a huge platform for both business and personal exchange, it stands to reason that anyone wishing to harass and stalk you can gain a huge amount of information (such as contact details) about you and your business activities by simply visiting your profile on LinkedIn for example. 94% of victims will then make a change to the way they live and, like me, many professionals will start to moderate how much information they give away online about their business. This inhibits your marketing strategy and client engagement potential. A survey conducted in 2011 shows financial losses to stalking victims ranged from £4-£20 million and I’m not surprised. When you are being harassed like this day after day, week after week, you take your eye off the ball! You may also have issues with your harasser making false claims about your legitimacy and making false complaints about your business. This can be hugely costly to you as your reputation is what makes your business successful. People believe the bad about you before they believe the good, and Corporate Stalkers know this. It’s this power that feeds them.
My advice to any other professional person who wants to avoid such an experience is: • Only allow people you know to friend you on Facebook – have a business Facebook page ONLY for business and keep it separate from your personal one. • On LinkedIn – only let people link to you who you know professionally or members who have a photograph and a clear business profile with at least a dozen connections. Consider this – do they SOUND legitimate? Trust your gut. • On Twitter – don’t feel you have to have a private profile. It can inhibit how many people see your tweets and do business with you. Just be careful about who tweets you and what they say. If you feel threatened then block and report them. Don’t get roped into online arguments with people who annoy you. • Consider how you come across to business contacts: try not to share too much personal information in the early days. • Overall – if someone starts to contact you (named or anonymously) and upset you at all, start to record every contact in detail. Create online and paper files of this information as charges can only be brought with two solid pieces of evidence against your perpetrator. • Call the police as soon as the contact becomes persistent and unwanted. This person has now stepped over the line. Do not contact them back and do not abuse them back – at this stage you may stop being a victim in the eyes of the police.

F
alkirk District Credit Union (FDCU) has been established since 1994. Starting as a taxi drivers association it has now grown and is open to anyone living or working in the Falkirk Council area. It has collection points throughout the Falkirk District area. All are mainly serviced by volunteers who have each signed a confidentiality agreement. New volunteers are always welcome and full training is provided. The Credit Union is a financial co-operative owned and controlled by its members. FDCU is managed by a voluntary Board of Directors elected at each Annual General Meeting. It offers an accessible savings facility and affordable interest loans to its members. Deposits and repayments can be made at collection points, by using Pay Point, by Standing Order or, if an employer agrees, through payroll deduction. We are always looking to extend and grow and we are fortunate to have the support of Falkirk Council. Over 140 of their employees are members, paying into their Credit Union accounts using a Payroll Deduction scheme. Other local employers also use this scheme and we are very happy to speak to employers and employees about establishing this facility. Junior savers are welcome. Full members aged from 16 up to their 80th birthday are covered by our free life insurance policy which covers both savings and loans. All deposits are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme and FDCU is regulated by both the Prudential Regulation Authority and the Financial Conduct Authority. If, as an employer, you are interested in finding out more about the Payroll Deduction scheme or you are interested in becoming a member of FDCU or volunteering with us please contact the main office in Station Road, Grangemouth on 01324 473695, email fdcu@btconnect.com or visit our website www.falkirkcreditunion.co.uk for more information.

Practical advice for family enterprises Running a business of any sort is complicated and tough. But when your family are also employees / board members / shareholders or are simply “family who have an interest in what goes on”, then the issues and challenges to be faced can grow exponentially! Once family enterprises have progressed into the second generation and beyond, the informal structures, communication and procedures that work for owner managed businesses, tend to break down. Once the difficulties become apparent it can be challenging for the business family leader to resolve them. Apart from the fact that the policies and structures that will be required are likely to be unfamiliar to him or her, the emotional hurdles alone can make progress impossible without the help of an independent third party like FBS. Young Enterprise at Carmuirs Primary School
T
he recent World of Work day at Carmuirs Primary School in Camelon, certainly had the WOW factor, with various businesses including the Chamber dropping in to chat with the youngsters about business and enterprise. Firstly we had a very lively session with Primary 4 who were advising our Business Development Manager Michelle McKearnon on how to set up a Safari Park business. They very quickly grasped the concept of cashflow and were full of great ideas on how to generate profit and avoid loss. A debate as to whether or not having fire-breathing dragons in our safari park would be an asset or a liability divided the class, but they all managed to come up with
some wonderful promotional posters to advertise the company. Then it was onto the Primary 7s who showed a good grasp of marketing and branding, having already run their own in-school enterprise company which has generated an income of almost £1,000 to date. These young entrepreneurs were a brand-savvy bunch who managed extremely well in our logo and strapline quiz, and who came up with some great new marketing ideas. Thanks to the staff at Carmuirs for inviting us along on the day. We thoroughly enjoyed it and are always willing to assist local schools in enterprise projects. BUSINESS SUPPORT
How to work with your family and still enjoy Sunday dinner.
O
ne of the advantages of having your own business is the opportunity to work with your nearest and dearest. On the plus side it is difficult for any other type of business to match the commitment and flexibility in pay and other conditions that can result from employing family. However, decisions about employing and remunerating your relatives can easily become stressful, to the extent that family relationships are harmed. Therefore, if you would like to work with your family and still enjoy family gettogethers, like Sunday dinner, you need a policy that sets everyone’s expectations about how these decisions will be taken. Purpose of the policy The policy should begin with a clear statement of its key aims and objectives, and define exactly who is affected by it. Will it just be nuclear family or will it cover a wider group including spouses and partners?
What types of jobs are available and what qualifications should family members have? It is helpful to distinguish between managerial positions, non-managerial full-time positions and part-time/casual/ summer work because access to these types of jobs will usually be managed in a different way. The policy could state

sometimes become confused by the notion that “one-day this will all be yours” from the seniors translating into a lower current salary for the younger generation. It should also be borne in mind that family are usually expcted to be more committed to the business and contribute more than other employees, which may justify family members being paid more. that certain jobs require a degree or other equivalent qualification, while others require no specific qualifications.
Depending upon the type of job, how are family to be treated in certain areas? The difficult issues are in relation to interview and appraisal processes and grievance and disciplinary procedures. Should a direct relative of a family member be involved in these decisions or should an outsider be involved in some way? It’s not always desirable to state that family will always be treated exactly the same as nonfamily, if that results in someone appraising their relative or deciding whether or not to fire them. The latter scenario does not make for harmonious Sunday dinners!
Remuneration Remuneration can become confused by a lack of distinction between what part of income is salary and what is the return on investment if the family employee also holds shares. Discussions on this topic between the senior and younger generations of a family (if they ever take place) can

Adoption and review This type of policy should be discussed by the family, the owners and the board or partners. Even if these are the same people, (which is often the case) you should distinguish your needs and expectations as a family member from those as a businessperson, in order to make the right decisions for the right reasons. Being in business for yourself gives you many advantages and opportunities, but when business needs and family duty clash, it can become difficult. Having clear polices which have been created calmly, rather than hoping that you can resolve family/business conflict as it arises, should ensure tranquil Sunday dinners for many generations to come. How to Win New Business
I
have a simple but strong belief. The most meaningful way to differentiate your company from your competition and the best way to put distance between you and the crowd is to do an outstanding job in the acquisition of new clients through your lead generation and conversion of prospects. Statistically, you will retain only 65 per cent of your clients each year so it is vital to consistently replenish your customers. In every business, it's a given that operations, services and products are sound - it's expected. Similarly, efficiency, quality, customer service, finances etc. However, it is how you conduct your marketing and what is manifest to your target market that will determine whether you win or lose. There are more competitors. There are less barriers to entry in every industry. The winners will be the ones who develop a world-class digital and real-world marketing strategy and implement it consistently.

BUSINESS SUPPORT
If Everybody Can Buy Your Services, Nobody Will Who? Be specific when you are identifying your target market. Take a minute to analyse your clients from the last 12 months and identify: • In which industry are they? • What is their turnover? • Where are they located? • How many employees do they have? • Who within the company is your primary contact? Segment your database by niche, sector, service group, geography, and profit for your prospects and your clients. Also segment your strategic alliances, suppliers and distributors. Our research shows that it is far more effective to target potent database segments of 40 to 500 than it is to hit a diluted database of 8000. The riches are in the niches.
How to Reach Your Prospects The big question is: how do you reach your potent target market segments with the service offering they desire in order to bring profit into your company? Communicate a unified message across multiple media, both real-world and online. Now that you understand their needs, you have to show them that you understand. You must show your target market that you are the expert in your industry by educating them, giving them tips and insight that your competitors aren’t willing to give, conveying the successes of your clients, how these were achieved and what it meant to their business and building trust in your company. Success breeds success only when it is manifest. You have to toot your own horn!
The golden rule is: you need seven marketing touches before your prospects will buy from you. If you were to do all of these touches via a single medium, your lead generation and conversion rates would suffer greatly. However, by executing an integrated campaign, coordinated across multiple relevant channels, your marketing campaign will be far more successful and reap rewards beyond any individual channel alone. Realistically, your most effective marketing strands in 2013 are: • Monthly e-newsletter; • E-book / Whitepaper; • Blog (also embedded on your website); • Twitter (also embedded on your website); • Flickr slideshow of team, clients, projects etc. (also embedded on your website); • Marketing Automation (nurturing your leads); • Industry survey; • Postcard mailshot which includes 7 tips and directs your prospect to microsite to download whitepaper / ebook; • PR / Press Release; and • Speaking at events. Your lead generation must be consistent. If you haven’t been in touch with your target market this month, you are not at the forefront of their minds. If you haven’t been in touch with your target market for more than three months, you have dropped off the radar completely. www.cubicblue.co.uk email stephen@cubicblue.co.uk
How to Choose your Marketing Strands Realistically, implementing your marketing campaign using only one medium is similar to launching a military campaign using only your navy. Or only your air force. Or only your ground troops. To be effective, you need all of them working together and precisely coordinated so each element knows the common purpose. Similarly, in your marketing campaign, you must have a unified message across multiple media.
To learn more of Stephen's top tips, come along to our networking lunch on 18th September where he will be presenting his ideas to Chamber members. See website for details.

Don’t Worry – Be Happy
V
ery rarely do the articles in this magazine make any great mathematical demands as part of the process of understanding the message within the text. This month, however, in a forlorn bid to stretch the intellectual capacity of our readers to a previously untested level, we offer you a formula to apply to your world, so that you may be able to realise when you might be really, really – happy. Obviously, we don’t want the very thought of a mathematical formula to make you unhappy, given that the formula is primarily intended to make you happy. So if you think that you are happy today, then don’t read on today – carry on with the article at a time when you are less than happy and hopefully, it will give you some tips to help you to get to a state of full happiness. Are you happy with that? The suggested formula then appears below and has been developed by a retired academic gentleman who provides “happiness coaching” for business leaders, celebrities and anyone else who needs it and who presumably in turn make him happy by giving him large amounts of money for his excellent work! The formula for happiness is described as H = O + (N x S) + Cpm/T + He To add some flesh to the bones, H = happiness, O = time spent outdoors, N = nature which is multiplied by S, social interaction. This in turn is added to childhood summer memories and positive thoughts (Cpm), divided by T (The day’s top temperature). Finally add in a helping of He (Holiday excitement) and there is your happiness index for the day. Well, quite frankly, as the author of this article, I am not happy at all about the whole idea of this. I’m indoors, can’t see outside, have nobody with me to talk to, have forgotten all my childhood as it is so long ago, can’t think of much that is positive as it is nearly July and the central heating is still on! Worst of all and to add insult to injury, I haven’t booked a holiday because I can’t afford it and you expect me to work out your stupid formula for happiness. Well, you’ve got another thing coming Doc. In fact to hell with it, I’m going to take a flexi day off tomorrow
so put that in your proverbial happy pipe and smoke it! The right to request flexible working is a statutory right available to employees who have responsibilities to care for an adult or child. The employee making the request has to satisfy certain qualifying criteria, including having 26 weeks of continuous service. The request itself must be made to the employer: • In writing • Confirming the relationship they have to the adult or child under their care • Confirming the working pattern requested • Confirming any likely changes or effect on the business and how these may be addressed • Details of any previous applications The employer must then respond on receipt: • By holding a meeting • Offer the right to be accompanied at the meeting • Notify the employee of the outcome of the meeting in writing within 14 days • Confirm the details of the flexible working arrangement or if rejected the reason for this decision Valid reasons for a refusal are confined to: • Additional cost burden • Customer demand will be affected • Inability to reorganise the workload with existing staff or recruit additional staff • Detrimental effect on product quality and/or performance • Insufficiency of work during the proposed flexible work times • Planned business structure changes Qdos HR advisers are your flexible friends and will be happy to advise you about all aspects of flexible working. They will not however be happy to advise you about happiness, or for that matter, mathematical formulae. Besides, the sun may be shining and they may be on holiday. Mobile Friendly Websites
T
he mobile phone seems to be leading the pack as the hardware tool of choice over fixed devices such as the desktop PC and even the laptop and tablet because of its size and flexibility. More photos are taken now than ever before because of the shift in mobile phone camera technology. Likewise, more texts and pictures are being moved around with the cheaper data packages and unlimited texts. The average 1317 year old sends more than 2,000 text messages per month. The modern phone is less obtrusive, fitting into pockets, handbags or fastening to belts.

With the majority of mobile subscribers owning smartphones, today’s shoppers are now better equipped than ever to find the best deals and get feedback about products on their shopping lists — anytime, anywhere. From pre-purchase research, to sharing an exciting find with friends, new data shows that smartphone and tablet owners are embracing their devices to make the most of their shopping experience. It’s no secret smartphone owners bring their handsets just about everywhere they go. Mobile shoppers like to use their devices for in-store activities. In fact, 78 percent of mobile shoppers say they’ve used their smartphone to find a store, and another 63 percent have checked prices online while shopping. Overall, smartphone
BUSINESS NEWS
owners are three times more likely to use their handset for some instore activities, like claiming mobile coupons (39%) or using shopping lists (40%), compared to tablet owners. (Neilson Wire, 2012) Now when shop assistants ask “Can I help you?” The response is more likely to be “Yes, what’s your WiFi password?” In the business to consumer sector, it is easy to understand therefore why it is necessary to have a mobile friendly website. In the business to business sector it is also essential to have a website not only well designed for the PC but also the mobile phone. • This year more people will use mobile phones than PCs to get online • Google estimates that around 50% of mobile searches are for local services • Research indicates that 6 in 10 visitors will leave a mobileunfriendly site • Consumers on the go use mobile search mostly for finding out the essential information, quickly contacting the business or locating the business on the map • Having a mobile optimised website is now imperative for your business Some interesting statistics about mobile users also support the case: • 60% of users expect a mobile site to load in 3 seconds or less • 71% of users expect a site to load as fast as a desktop site • 78% of users will retry a site two times or less if it does not load initially
So, now that we understand why we need to be mobile friendly what needs to be done? Unfortunately, there is not one definitive correct approach to mobile development. Several factors need to be considered before devising a mobile strategy. There are a number of choices available and it very much depends on your budget, needs and starting point. It is worth keeping in mind that it may not be essential to have a full version of your standard website rendered for mobile phone use. If you are about to revamp your existing website or starting a new one, it is possible to have it designed as a “responsive” website. This is the term used for a website that responds to the type of device the viewer is using and renders the layout to suit. This is particularly common now for WordPress websites using responsive templates. WordPress is a very popular open source design platform and many free Plugins are available. If you add plugins yourself, always make sure you have a backup in case it conflicts with other functionality or plugins. Other online platforms such as Weebly and Wix offer hosted mobile friendly versions as part of their subscription services. The beauty of the responsive website is that you only have to maintain one website. The down side is that you may not be able to take advantage of all the features of a mobile phone such as the motion sensor, barcode scanner and GPS tracking. If you do not want to modify your existing website, another product worth considering is the GoMobi addon which uses a subdomain of your website to create a mobile friendly website to run in parallel. A piece of code is generated to place in the header of your normal website to divert mobile users to this sub-domain. Last but not least, it is worth mentioning the growing success of the relatively unknown .tel domain name. As with other solutions, there are options when registering a .tel name and it may depend on the size of the organisation and what functionality you want from it. It is always advisable to have a mobile strategy in place before making any purchase. Article by Ron Skirving of Delta Digital www.deltadigital.co.uk

New Principal gets Down to Business Strengthening links between the further education sector and local businesses is top of the agenda for new Forth Valley College principal, Dr Ken Thomson. The College’s former Depute Principal took on the top job last month and is looking forward to hearing how the College can build on the strong relationships it has with local companies. One of his first tasks is to get out and about to find out what it is businesses need from new employees and how the College can help produce them. “We are here to deliver real opportunities in further education and employment for our students but this ultimately involves local employers as well,” said Dr Thomson.
“With two state-of-the-art campuses in Alloa and Stirling - and new cutting edge facilities at our Falkirk Campus, the College leads the way in delivering learning in some key sectors of the Scottish economy,” said Dr Thomson. “Each campus focuses on a key area of our learning strategy. Stirling specialises in Creative Industries, Tourism and Hospitality. In Falkirk, we excel in Engineering, Science and Technology focused qualifications. In Alloa, Business, Facilities Management and Work in the Community are the focus of our teaching. At all levels we have Access Programmes that allow students to progress into higher levels of qualifications in each of these areas.
“A significant majority of our 16,000 plus students will be going out to look for work locally in Forth Valley so it is vital that they are leaving with the skills that employers require.” Created in 2005 through the merger of Falkirk and Clackmannanshire Colleges, Forth Valley College is well positioned in the Government’s new regionalisation of the college sector.
Process Training Plant
Our Learning Strategy focuses on the key sector industries throughout Forth Valley. In Falkirk, the College has strong links to the oil, gas and petrochemical industries thanks to long term relationships with companies operating out of the Grangemouth industrial complex.
State-of-the-Art Laboratories
“We are making great progress in producing the type of work force local businesses require to grow and prosper in the future. The most effective way of ensuring we continue to meet the expectation of local employers is to build a better, more effective dialogue with these employers both individually and collectively through organisations like the local Chamber of Commerce.” Over the last eight years the College has also developed innovative programmes to help students progress further in higher education as well.
Gallery Training Restaurant
“The value of building closer relationships with our stakeholders and community planning partners cannot be underestimated. We are a key driver in economic development for this area and we need to work with our partners, stake-holders in further education, with local authorities and with employers if we are to build a stronger economic environment in the future.” Forth Valley College has the largest number of Modern Apprentices at any Scottish college and the last two of Scotland’s Vocational Qualifications (VQ) Learner of the Year award winners have both been products of Forth Valley College.

“More and more of our students are taking this latter route into graduate courses thanks to the ground-breaking link ups we’ve built with the Universities of Stirling, Heriot-Watt and Strathclyde in the areas of Creative Industries, Science, Heritage and Conservation and Engineering,” he said. This collaboration allows students to complete their first two years of study at Forth Valley College with an emphasis on workplace practical training. This is then complemented with two years of academic learning at university, leading to an honours degree. “So at the end of a four year course we have jointly produced a graduate who not only knows the theory, but has had the practical workplace based training to straight away become a productive part of a company’s workforce.”

Pedal Power – the way forward!
F
orth Valley Social Enterprises CIC is taking a different approach to training young people. The newly established, Stirling-based Community Interest Company believe that combining practical work experience with targeted training workshops is the most effective way of developing employability skills. FVSE Founder, Matt McGrandles, explains: “We have all been on training courses and sometimes walked away thinking we could have done with a bit more support. I believe that by providing the
for young people in the Forth Valley and supported by the local community. The opening of the Helix site in the autumn will provide an exciting opportunity to link the Helix, Falkirk Town Centre and Falkirk Wheel corridor. FVSE has been working alongside Dave Park from CVS Falkirk on an idea which allows not only an opportunity for employment, but connects key destinations in the Falkirk area and promotes a greener - and perhaps unusual mode of transport: rickshaws! FVSE’s new rickshaw service aims to make the pedal-powered transport a common site across Forth Valley. The planned service has already secured Stage
event providers where we can support their customer movements around an event site. So far, the idea has been very well received.” The social enterprise has already supported one local event, Meet the Species in Westquarter, where they transported people with mobility problems into the Glen on a rickshaw. The feedback from the event was extremely positive and FVSE are now confident of securing more events. The benefit of the rickshaw service is twofold: not only does it provide a more environmentally-friendly method of transport which links town centres with tourist attractions, it offers full training and support to the riders, helping them develop a full range of employability skills, including business knowledge, marketing and financial skills. There is also a firm focus on the future, including major events in 2014 such as the Stirling Highland Games, which has been accepted as a Homecoming Scotland 2014 Partner Event. Matt added: “This is a great event for our candidates and volunteers to be part of in 2014. Once we secure our main funding we are looking to deliver one event each quarter so our candidates can gain a raft of experience at any given point during one of the quarters. “Whether our candidates or volunteers go on to work in events, become a rickshaw rider through our start up programme or go on work placement, we aim to provide positive destination options for them all.” www.fvse.org.uk enquiries@fvse.org.uk

One funding from First Port which will allow a pilot scheme to run in the coming weeks. Matt added: “It just made sense that we take this idea to the major attractions in Falkirk and Stirling and get their backing. Almost seven months of work has gone into how we develop our rickshaw service as an alternative transport option. We are also looking to secure contracts with

BUSINESS SUPPORT
Growing your Business Business Mentoring – A reflective mirror
I
nterviews with successful entrepreneurs inform us that at some stage of their development, most have sought out a mentor. Mentoring is the process by which one person assists another to grow and learn in a safe and sympathetic relationship. The mentor is generally a successful peer or someone considered to be more experienced. In May of this year, the Forth Valley Chamber of Commerce took on the role of facilitating the matching of a business person with an appropriate mentor as part of the Scottish Chamber of Commerce Business Mentoring programme. The eligibility criteria to be considered for this programme is for businesses to have a minimum of £100K annual turnover and an aspiration to grow. In three months eight successful matches have been made.
Why have a Mentor? From those who took part in previous programmes, the key benefits were: • Raising business horizons • An external “warts and all” viewpoint • Greater self-awareness • A more focused approach to developing the business • Greater ideas and focus on the bigger picture The mentor acts as a sounding board for exploring new possibilities and new ways of approaching problems, with the opportunity to think through the direction of the business.
Why be a mentor? Mentors offer their time and skills voluntarily. The experience is challenging and stimulating and ultimately the benefits of mentoring are clearly two-way. The mentor will offer encouragement, ideas and opinions. A mentor will • Offer an impartial view on business issues • Develop your problem solving skills • Offer their experience, expertise and guidance • Build confidence • Widen your network of contacts and opportunities
A mentor will not • Solve your problems for you • Tell you what to do • Offer business advice The vital key to success in mentoring is that each relationship is custom-built by the mentee and mentor to address their specific needs. Honesty is paramount as is trust - both parties sign a confidentiality agreement. A growing business brings its own challenges. Owners Mark and Nicola Cattanach of Rooftec (Scotland) Ltd found themselves in this position. They heard about Business Mentoring and realised the benefits that this could bring. They were matched up with local entrepreneur and accountant Martin Robertson of Martin Robertson Associates. Mark has been delighted with the interest shown by his new mentor. The relationship is now 3 months old and Mark is enthusiastic regarding what has been achieved. “It has been great to have someone to bounce ideas off. Our business is growing and Martin has helped me realise that I have to spend more time in managing and controlling the business than working in the business. He has helped me create a plan and is providing guidance in following the plan.” Mark also said how beneficial it is to be able to pick up the phone or email Martin to get his views on particular issues as they crop up. Martin became a mentor with a view to giving something back. He is passionate about helping business owners, not only be successful, but also have a good work-life balance. “Whilst having a profitable business is very important, it is also vital that business owners look at the bigger picture. I try and encourage them to identify why they are doing what they are doing and set objectives.“ He is delighted to be working with Mark and feels he can bring an impartial view to help Mark grow and develop the business. The simplicity of this programme is the key to its success. Businesses will be matched with a mentor who has strengths and experience in the areas in which they have expressed a need. The first introductory meeting is a key part of the matching process and allows both parties to identify the chemistry that exists Mark Cattanach

between them and whether an ongoing relationship is likely to work. At this stage there is a “no faults” opt out, and a “re-match” can be arranged by Dorothy Henke, the Chamber’s Business Mentoring co-ordinator. The mentor’s support is for 2-4 hours once a month, with regular contact throughout the month between meetings. A purr-fect museum curator Oswald Clingan-Smith – Cat-in-Charge, Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum
“Keen on social media, Oswald has had his own YouTube channel since 2006”
S
ome visitors to the Smith have expressed surprise at receiving a personal welcome from Oswald, Head of PR-ing at the Stirling Smith. Those that do not know the world of cats, ask ‘Who owns him?’ Oswald, as Cat-in-Charge does not have an owner - he has Staff. Oswald was part of the Clingan family at 38 Albert Place, when he arrived as a kitten nine years ago. He immediately applied for a residential post with the Stirling Smith at 40 Albert Place, and no discouragement could make him go away. He made himself indispensable as a volunteer during the day, patrolling the building, greeting the visitors and supervising the gardeners on Thursday. He returned home at closing time, but came back in the evenings, often attending meetings of the Stirling Literary Society,
the Advanced Motorists’ group, or the Embroiderer’s Guild. He developed a particular liking for the Dickens Book Group and has enjoyed all of the Dickens novels read on these occasions. When the Clingan family moved to Bridge of Allan with Oswald in 2009, he showed his displeasure in no uncertain manner. They gave in to his protests, and brought him back to the Smith in 2011. Over the years, Oswald has trained the Smith staff to meet his expectations and standards and has never neglected his duties. He has developed a special interest in museum security and when staff members are called out in the middle of the night to attend the alarm system, Oswald will often be waiting to accompany their inspection. Sometimes, Oswald has been the cause of the alarm call-out, having been locked in the Theatre or some other alarmed section of the building after hours. In these instances he has been meticulous in waking
between 8 and 10 pm to set off the alarm and check that the system was in working order. He also likes to contribute in the administration dept, and has been known to helpfully despatch half-finished e-mails to many surprised recipients at the click of a mouse. Keen on social media, Oswald has had his own YouTube channel since 2006, and now offers his special cat’s eye view of the museum world through Twitter @ SmithSuperCat. To satisfy public demand for Oswald, Museum Assistant Elizabeth Douglas has even designed a knitting pattern to enable visitors to knit their own Oswald. This will not only raise funds for the Smith, but give people a photo opportunity to compare the Oswald cat. Simples! www.youtube.com/oswaldkitty www.smithartgalleryandmuseum.co.uk

Welfare Reforms and Your Staff This half day course has been developed for Forth Valley Chamber of Commerce by The Plan B Partnership, to enable employers to understand the ramifications of the various incoming welfare changes affecting staff, and how to prepare for issues likely to impact on productivity, morale, mental health and professional output. In-work benefits are being radically reformed across the UK with financial exclusion and debt being notable outcomes for working people across the social spectrum. Employers need to know how to make adequate plans, develop solution based strategies and overall help staff stay motivated, ambitious & professionally secure. Decision makers, HR staff, OCC Health staff, HWL reps, Union Reps and Team Managers from any sector will find this relevant as staff in every business will be affected by the changes. Delegates will: •
Learn about the 2013-2015 welfare changes affecting different staff demographics in your team/s
•
Gain intelligence on workplace policy updates and practice changes you can make to reduce issues in the workplace where welfare change and associated financial exclusion may have a negative impact
•
Learn useful methods how to help your staff help themselves so their work is not affected, plus how you can encourage OCC Health, HR, Healthy Working Lives reps & Union reps to get involved
•
Understand the map of services & agencies in your local area and identify who can help staff affected so that you can adequately signpost and refer them on for appropriate support.

Freedom and Success at Kilgraston SUPPORTIVE, ACADEMICALLY successful and consistently in the top three Scottish Schools at Advanced Higher, Kilgraston is a truly thriving community. Two years ago, Kilgraston in Bridge of Earn, with a balanced mix of day girls and boarders, was UK Independent School of the Year. Judges praised it warmly as “an example to other schools”. From the 45 leafy acres set amongst rolling hills, to the swimming, hockey and tennis academies, Equestrian Centre (the only school in Scotland with on-campus facilities) and now the current £1m investment in a state-of-the-art Science Centre, Kilgraston facilities look and feel world-class. Principal Frank Thompson says: “At Kilgraston, small is beautiful. With small class sizes, we are totally committed to individualised care. We know every one of our 340 girls extremely well. Staff know who needs a little extra help or who needs to be stretched a little further.” Kilgraston is part of the Sacred Heart network of schools and welcomes girls of all faiths. It has four sections: Nursery (ages 2½ to 5), Preparatory (ages 5–13), Senior School (ages 13–16) and Sixth

Form. Boarders love being here, this is clearly evident thanks to a warm and supportive atmosphere - Kilgraston girls are not only taken care of, they learn to take care of themselves and each other. Dr Leonard Sax, a world-renowned expert on the benefits of single sex education, held a seminar at Kilgraston last month and told parents: “Girls at single-sex schools are more likely to study computer science, physics, engineering and technology and participate in competitive sports than are girls in co-educational schools. “That’s because at the co-educational school, the focus is on how you look. But at the single sex school, the focus is more on who you are. The best possible thing you can do to help your daughter is to get her into a girls’ school.” www.kilgraston.com To visit Kilgraston, please call (01738) 812257. Tours of the school are available year-round.
