e are delighted to announce in this issue the launch of the Forth Valley Chamber of Commerce Business Awards 2015, the largest Business Awards covering the Forth Valley. Our main sponsor has been confirmed as the Ministry of Defence and we look forward to working with them to deliver another exemplary event.

The 2014 Awards were a wonderful celebration of the diversity and achievements of businesses in the Forth Valley. The standard of entry was incredibly high and we are hugely proud of our business community. We are sure that the competition for the 2015 Awards will be equally competitive. Winners of the 2015 Business Awards will gain automatic entry into an equivalent category in the Scottish Chamber of Commerce “Business Honours” later in 2015. At the 2014 Scottish Business Honours eight Forth Valley businesses were selected as finalists. We congratulate Life Fit Wellness who made it through to the final shortlisted three and just missed out on being the winner of “Most Promising Business”. To find out more about the Awards please go to page 24. Remember that these Awards are open to all businesses operating in the Forth Valley area and, you do not have to be a member of the Chamber to enter. This is your Chamber and we are all keen to hear from members on what works for you and what doesn’t, therefore please feel free to contact me or any member of the Chamber team with your feedback or ideas. We want to hear from you. I am sure you will enjoy this issue and I look forward to meeting you at one of the events – and the best of luck if you decide to enter the Business Awards! Falkirk Business Hub one year on

T

he Falkirk Business Hub has celebrated its first anniversary in two major ways – by hitting the 80 per cent mark for office occupation and revealing plans to open a fully-managed business centre community in Glasgow. The first of The Hub’s tenants took the keys to their offices in August 2013 and now 30 businesses employing more than 90 people are based in the £2.5 million building. The ground floor, with a coffee house and LifeFit Wellness centre, enjoys

4

a 100 per cent occupancy. The Wellness Centre is where gym classes, physio services, medical and dietary support, plus traditional and complimentary therapies, are available. “We’ve had a successful first year,” said Alistair Campbell, Managing Director of Bellair (Scotland) Ltd whose vision and finance brought the Falkirk Business Hub to life. “Our aim was for each tenant to experience a new way of working and renting the exact space they need through an ‘easy in, easy out’ agreement model. “What has also been pleasing is that it’s clearly been a successful business year

for tenants as well, with some renting more space and increasing their staffing levels.” From beauty therapists to investment managers, cleaning services to design and advertising, professional photographers to solicitors, and Falkirk District Council’s Townscape Heritage Initiative project office, the four-storey business offers tenants a host of ‘in-house’ support services for fledgling and established businesses. Its co-working suite is a key feature for tenants – from ‘external’ companies to new-starts, or those based in the serviced offices. Mentoring, advice and facilities

tailored to support businesses, regardless of size, are all available on-site. The Hub’s attraction as a meeting place is also growing with Weight Watchers meetings, Spanish and meditation classes all being held there. Business Gateway also runs bi-monthly start-up workshops. Unlike conventional business centres, The Hub, which has had positive support from the Falkirk business community, is an environment for small to large businesses as well as home workers looking for a desk for a couple of hours or days. Now Bellair has completed the purchase of a six-floor, buff sandstone,

terraced building plus basement – 35-39 St Vincent Place – in Glasgow city centre. Plans to create another Hub-style set up are being developed. The first floor will be a reception area plus co-working, meeting pods and rooms, and conference space for upwards of 100 people. Work on other floors will create a few dozen smaller office suites for between three and six workstations. “We have been searching for a suitable location to create another Hub following our success in Falkirk and this building in the heart of Glasgow, a minute from George Square and ten steps from

Buchanan Street, is ideal for our expansion plans,” said Alistair. “An upgrade is required and we’re looking at ways to complete this most effectively. But, once again, we want to provide facilities and services to support networking and co-working in an atmosphere where small businesses will not only locate but also meet to operate, to be creative and to grow.” It is hoped the Glasgow hub will open in the summer of next year – and others may follow. www.bellair.co.uk www.falkirkbusinesshub.co.uk

Referendum 2014 – Scotland has decided

S

eptember 18th was a momentous day for Scotland when the vast majority of the population turned out to vote in the Referendum on Independence. As the results of a very hard fought debate came in on the 19th, it became clear that the decision was a NO to becoming an independent nation. So where does this leave Scottish businesses? Liz Cameron, Chief Executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce made the following statement:

Scottish businesses need the best from our governments “Scotland has decided that the way forward is to remain as a part of the United Kingdom. Businesses have told us that they want to see the Scottish Parliament gain more powers. This is now going to happen but we need clarity on what additional powers will be delivered and when, focusing on those devolved powers which will have greatest impact on Scotland’s competitiveness as a place to do business. For example we have long argued

6

that devolving Air Passenger Duty to the Scottish Parliament could help to deliver a fiscal regime that promotes Scotland’s international connectivity. This is vitally important if we are to ensure that Scotland is to be as economically competitive and business friendly as it can be, and we need action quickly. “It is time to get on with the dayto-day issues that affect the way we do business in Scotland, such as planning for our future skills needs, building Scotland’s domestic and international connectivity and ensuring that our energy supply is planned, reliable and affordable. “We will work with all politicians of all parties both in the Scottish Parliament and in the UK Parliament to help influence the best deal for Scottish businesses. The referendum has determined the direction of travel and business must now work with our governments in Edinburgh and London to grasp the opportunities that will be provided by further devolution. “One of the major positives of the referendum debate was that Scotland’s economy was at the top of the political agenda. Now we must keep it there. As we approach elections to the UK Parliament in 2015 and the Scottish Parliament in 2016,

FORTH VALLEY • AUTUMN 2014

we have a great opportunity to ensure that Scotland’s economic potential is enhanced and that we become an even more attractive place to start and run a business and to invest.” Commenting for the Forth Valley Chamber of Commerce, CEO Laurence Barrett added, “The people who live and work in Scotland have made their decision and irrespective of whether it is what we personally wanted, we live in a democracy and we remain part of the UK. Whilst we wait to see what new/additional devolved powers the Scottish Government will take responsibility for, the day-to-day business must carry on. Forth Valley continues to experience a higher unemployment rate than Scotland as a whole and this needs to be addressed. One of the recurring issues being reported to us by businesses is the difficulty in recruiting staff with relevant skills. Within the manufacturing sector businesses are having difficulty in finding suitably skilled technical staff, while in the tourism sector businesses are experiencing difficulties in recruiting managerial staff. Businesses want to invest in these skilled employees, but if they can’t recruit them, their businesses can’t grow. We will be looking at how we can support our businesses to recruit the right people to move the economy forward.”

We live in a world where risk is an everyday part of life and for the most technically challenging problems, managing risk is the essence of good business. No maer how far away, how intricate or how difficult; the approach IKM takes has helped some of the biggest names in business deal with risks that were unforeseeable ten years ago. Easy steps to reach a global market

W

ith English still the number one language on the web with over 536 million English users in 2014, it is easy for designers to forget about other languages when developing applications for the web. Yet the web is a truly global medium. Chinese is the second most common language used with over 445 million users and looks set to continue growing through 2014. Other languages such as Spanish and Japanese are also catching up. If your website is in the business of making money or selling you are missing out on a potential 78% of all internet users by offering an English only version. If you have the ambition to create a truly global business, the following 5 tips should come in handy. Keyword Research – Proper keyword research is probably the most important

8

aspect of launching a website in another language, especially for e-commerce and businesses selling products or services. Do not be tempted to simply translate your English based keywords into the target language. This is pointless. A classic example of bad keyword translation is for ‘Car Insurance’; Google Translate gives the result of ‘l’assurance automobile’ in French. While this translation is accurate it is not a typical search term that French users would use. They would most likely use something along the lines of ‘assurance voiture’. Language specific keyword research should be approached in much the same way as English keyword research by researching popular search terms using tools such as Wordtracker and Google Insight, while also employing a professional translator to help brainstorm for synonyms and popular keywords for your sector. Choosing the Right Domain – This age old debate never fails to arise on discussions

FORTH VALLEY • AUTUMN 2014

R U O Y G N I S Y L A AN ISTICS STAT of multi-lingual websites. Is it better to use a ccTLD (country code top level domain) such as www.globalvoices.it or a sub domain of your main domain? Both choices have their ups and downs. For instance, using a ccTLD may make your site look slightly more authoritative to local search engines and visitors than a “.com” but this is only useful if you are looking to target countries or regions. Don’t get caught in a trap if you simply want to provide alternative languages for your site. There are many countries that speak the same language; you wouldn’t really want your Spanish “.es” site serving your South American visitors would

you? The alternative is to use a sub domain of your main domain such as www.globalvoices. com/it. This method is more practical if you are looking to provide alternative languages of your content, yet are not solely focused on selling products or services in a specific country or region. Localising Your Website – Much in the same way that keywords require research, multilingual content should be correctly optimised and localised if you are serious about making money or adding value to your visitors on your foreign language sites. Different cultures around the world have

different perceptions and both design and content should be taken into account when designing for foreign audiences. A UK visitor may respond better to content that is in a less formal, almost ‘chatty’ tone; German visitors may respond positively to clean, modern designs and a more corporate tone. Managing Your Translations – Good management of translated content needs careful consideration straight from the design stage. Many CMS systems have the capability already built in to manage translations, while systems such as WordPress have readily available third party plugins that can help. Managing translated content is simple, especially if you have a robust procedure in place. Analysing Your Statistics – Google Analytics should never be ignored; segment and break down the analysis of each site to help draw conclusions on how each country or language version is performing and where to improve. You should be able to see clear

statistics about where your main target audiences are coming from and where you can refine content and landing pages to improve visitor bounce rates.

Edinmore contracts achieves national accreditation with ISO 14001 award

G

rangemouth-based Edinmore Contracts strives to keep one step ahead of their competitors, so are delighted to announce that they have recently been accredited with the Environmental Standard, BS EN ISO 14001: 2004. This nationally recognised standard confirms Edinmore’s commitment to the environment and is seen as a reward for their ongoing focus on Environmental Management Systems. Our Health & Safety Manager, Steven Soroka, has been instrumental in implementing a viable Environmental Management System within the business which all office staff and tradesmen can relate to and contribute to. Pictured with the new accreditation certificate, Steven commented; “Edinmore are firmly focused on being a market leader in the Building Insurance sector, and whilst there was no immediate requirement from any of our clients to obtain this standard, I felt that it would stand us in good stead if we were one of the first Contractors to achieve it. Obtaining ISO 14001 can be a lengthy process from start to finish and I’m sure that this recent accreditation, along with all our others, will help to consolidate our position in the insurance sector whilst also opening many doors in other sectors. There is far more focus on environmental issues now than there was 10 years ago and I felt it was important that Edinmore Contracts stayed one step ahead. There are obvious cost savings to the business by reducing our environmental footprint, reducing our CO2 emissions and focusing on our recycling.” Edinmore currently employ 90 people at their Grangemouth base and are hoping to expand in the coming months.

Controversial I know. So why would a successful training company manager like me say such a thing? Because we come across so many instances where training provided has been a completely wasted exercise. My business world is all about training. This includes training and development, people development, organisational development, human capital realisation and more. Yet, it can be ‘people unfriendly’, by using perhaps the most acronyms, jargon and buzz words of any field or industry – unless another profession would like to make a bid for the title? Now that we’ve been in business for 13 years, we’ve been through both growth and recession, we’ve experienced the highs and lows of business, and at all times we’ve learned, adapted and changed when it was needed. But not everyone has. Not everyone is quick to embrace change. So this is why on many occasions, training can be a waste of time. But it isn’t just about ‘Why?’ training is a waste of time, it’s also about ‘When’. Training is a waste of time when it’s not implemented the right way. It’s a waste of time when companies like yours and mine don’t appreciate that the magic of superb training is lost if it isn’t implemented in the right ways. Training is a waste of time unless it is: 1. Focused on a specific business need 2. Designed with the audience in mind and delivered by modern training methods 3. Facilitated by credible people who are prepared to give up the spotlight so that the participants can learn 4. Linked to immediate actions in the workplace 5. Assessed for its return on the organisation’s investment and management expectations

Leading in the Modern Scotland Military leadership

T

he principles of Military Leadership are invariably the same as those used by other organisations, however the environment in which the military exercise leadership tends to be different, verging on extreme. The ultimate test of a military leader is to rally physically and mentally exhausted soldiers, invariably short of rations, soaked through from either rain or sweat, far from home, living with constant uncertainty and up against a tenacious and merciless enemy. And then to ask them to put all that to one side, overcome the inevitable fears that gnaw away inside them and to face unfavourable odds that might see them being killed. And their only reward is a sense of having done their duty, because it is not done for glory or financial gain. So when asked to identify what I regard as military ‘leadership’ as opposed to its civilian counterpart, my thoughts turn to achieving the seemingly impossible through the exercise of personal example, the effects of investing in developing a strong team ethos, trust and confidence between all team members, courage (both moral and

physical), respect for others, integrity, loyalty and selfless commitment. These are not buzz words to be thrown around carelessly, they are the qualities which enable the UK to operate internationally at a level well above her size and economic strength. All too often the principles of good management are confused with the attributes of good leadership. Good management is the ability to take people in the direction of travel that they would naturally choose and do so in an efficient and organised manner; while good leadership is the ability to take people collectively on a journey against their own interests or instincts. Most civilian firms have good ‘management’ and are structured accordingly; the corporate hierarchy of CEO, President and MD are essentially tiers of management, not leadership. Success in business can also be mistaken as the product of good leadership; there are many highly influential international firms that thrive purely on pushing the technological envelope, but which lack true leadership. For as long as they remain at the cutting edge of technology they will prosper, but one bad decision and their lack of any decisive leadership will leave them shattered and rudderless. The collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008 is an example of a much vaunted and successful company that everyone had assumed was too big to fail; its collapse exposed a failure of management in virtually every department, and throughout its final days there was a woeful lack of any leadership by those at the top. The assumption had been that the company had strong leadership, yet a close examination of the qualities required for promotion within the firm and those required for heading up departments, reveal a complete lack of understanding of the difference between management and leadership. Leadership is essential, which is why the Army invests so heavily in it. When the chips are down and things are going awry you need strong leadership. We take it seriously because people’s lives depend upon us getting it right.

Civilian Leadership

M

y first brush with great leadership came on a building site in London during the early seventies. After months of being moved from one site to another and working to a series of brusque instructions, I arrived on a large vacant site in Earls Court. The outstretched hand of the site foreman – a Welshman with a broken nose and a firm grip, met me. He led me to a small hut and showed me a model and drawings. ‘This is what you are building,’ he said. ‘Each day come in here and remind yourself of this and then go and bring it to life.’ It was the first time I had ever sensed responsibility for the bigger picture. I felt empowered, energised and enthused – working harder than I had ever worked. This foreman would seek me out and thank me for my efforts and, if I fell behind, guide me. I learned then that great leaders create leaders rather than followers. With his support I became a better leader myself. That was in my twenties – now at 64 I run leadership masterclasses around Scotland using what I’ve experienced across many sectors and industries. What I have learned above all else is that leadership is not a given title; it is a philosophy and an attitude. It is taken rather than assigned and great enterprises have it every level. I have argued before that Scotland needs to move from a management to leadership culture. In today’s business environment success comes from equipping people to take responsibility and be creative in their approach – entrepreneurial rather than compliant. We recognise great leadership when we see it, but we don’t always take time to define those qualities that make a leader great. Here’s what I have identified as the top five attributes of the most successful leaders. Strong in purpose – Great leaders have and share a clear vision. They recognise that common purpose and shared values drive success and they create a culture around

them rather than allow it to evolve. They also know that profit comes from sticking to that strong vision. Put People First – Leaders treat people well; they earn their trust, respect and loyalty. They see humans to be developed and fulfilled and they scale leadership rather than processes. They serve people, learn from them and let them flourish. Develop Awareness – Great leaders are highly self aware, culturally aware and emotionally aware. They listen, engage, observe and learn. They don’t live in their own bubble. They have humility and seek others input. Make things simple – Great leaders create simplicity in a complex world. They see complexity as stifling, expensive, inefficient, and ineffective. Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication and great leaders know that. Get human – Great leaders see leadership as personal, and they engage accordingly. They see a failure to engage as a failure to lead. The best leaders are viewed as great human beings because they see empathy, kindness, and compassion as the ultimate strengths. Peak performance is built by helping others become successful. Great leaders treat their people as if their life depends on it – it does!

Oldbaum Services lines up for Best Innovation

W

ind data consultancy Oldbaum Services has been shortlisted for one of the top prizes at the Scottish Green Energy Awards 2014. The nomination, for Best Innovation, comes following a prosperous year for the expanding team. There has been continued growth, exciting new projects, as well as an award for Best Green Business by the Forth Valley Chamber of Commerce Business Awards. Oldbaum have also carried out further research into the impact of offshore wind wakes - the single biggest challenge an offshore wind analyst faces today. Work was successfully concluded this year on the Offshore Wind Accelerator Wakes measurement campaign on behalf of the Carbon Trust. For this multi-million pound project, Oldbaum developed the campaign data retrieval strategy with the aim of

20

reducing the cost of energy for offshore wind in the future. Back in 2005, Oldbaum was involved in the most comprehensive test of a LiDAR system to date, when nobody had thought of a standard test programme to prove they could work. Tests for the Beatrice Offshore Demonstrator proved to all partners that LiDAR was a valid measurement technique, which could provide highly accurate data suitable for project yields. Using experience from the Beatrice Demonstrator, Oldbaum came up with and then delivered the 7.9 Million Euro NORSEWInD project. NORSEWInD is the single biggest LiDAR-based wind measurement database, and this proved without doubt that LiDAR could operate offshore and over extended periods. The company’s continuous evolution and innovation over the years have had a positive impact in the wind industry, reducing costs and increasing access to information. Oldbaum’s Technical Director

Andy Oldroyd said: “Over our history we have had to innovate technically and commercially to win projects against much larger organisations with a much larger budget and much larger sales force. We win because we show unique understanding of how to match technology to physical problems.” He added: “It is really exciting that our work has been recognised by the industry in Scotland with this nomination for Best Innovation at the Scottish Green Energy Awards.” The coveted Green Energy Awards, sponsored by EDF Energy Renewables, will be presented at a sell-out dinner at the EICC in Edinburgh on November 27. Over 1,100 guests will celebrate the best in renewable energy talent, projects and innovation.

Official opening of Salvation Army furniture showroom

L

eaders of the Salvation Army are hoping a new furniture project in Falkirk will boost their outreach work in the town – and help cut down on landfill. The church and charity officially opened its Furniture ReUse showroom on Callender Road in August. The store specialises in furniture and other large household items. Volunteers at the store, under the guidance of project manager Ian Browse, will also be on hand to offer a range of support to people referred for assistance. Profits from the project will go directly to The Salvation Army’s church and community centre in Woodside Court, which runs a range of programmes including a drop-in centre, after-school club and community cafe. Daniel Rous, Divisional Charity Shops Operations Manager, said: “This is an exciting time for The Salvation Army in Falkirk. The ownership for the shop comes from the local corps and so when people buy a piece of furniture they are helping the work of The Salvation Army locally.

“The project has had fantastic support so far, and a number of companies and charities have gone the extra mile to help us get it up and running. These include Gemini Supplies, Signs Express, Falkirk Council, Forth Valley Chamber of Commerce, The Salvation Army charity shop in Falkirk, Home Aid West Lothian,

Announcing…

The Forth Valley Chamber Business Awards 2015 Sponsored by the Ministry of Defence

W

Laurence Barrett and Brigadier Harkness

e are delighted to announce that the Forth Valley Chamber Business Awards 2015 will take place on March 19th at the DoubleTree by Hilton Dunblane Hydro, promising to be an evening to remember in celebration of the successes of businesses across Central Scotland. Our main sponsors for this gala event are the Ministry of Defence with whom we have strong partnerships in a range of projects including employment of Reservists, support for veterans into self-employment, business engagement and education. Brigadier Paul Harkness, Commander 51st Infantry Brigade, commented, “On behalf of the Armed Forces it gives me great pleasure to support the Forth Valley Chamber of Commerce Business Awards 2015. The Armed Forces play a vital role in the economy of the United Kingdom by protecting your security and business interests both at home and abroad. The freedoms and safe operating environment provided by the Armed Forces creates the stable conditions necessary for business and industry to flourish, and makes the United Kingdom the country of first choice for closer partnerships, investment and alliances. I am looking forward to working with Forth Valley Chamber and the local business community to develop and strengthen these partnerships.” CEO of Forth Valley Chamber and Stirling Chamber Laurence Barrett added, “We are delighted at the support shown by the Ministry of Defence in being the Main Sponsors of the Forth Valley Chamber of Commerce Business Awards 2015, the largest Business Awards within Central Scotland. It is too easily overlooked that our Armed Forces play a pivotal role within the business landscape, not least the highly skilled and professionally trained Reservists they can offer the business community in a true synergy of partnership working. We are also excited to have the DoubleTree by Hilton Dunblane Hydro as an excellent venue for our Awards. We are sure that we will be in for an

inspiring evening, celebrating successful businesses from across Stirlingshire and Clackmannanshire.” Commenting on being selected to host the 2015 Awards, Michael Poux, General Manager at DoubleTree by Hilton Dunblane Hydro said, “We are extremely honoured to be chosen as the destination for this event. We are delighted to contribute in celebrating the accomplishments of the local businesses that enrich our community in providing economic growth and stability to the people who live here.” The 2015 Awards will build on the huge success of the inaugural Awards in 2014, with 12 Categories to be contested. Applications will be open from November 1st via the Chamber Website www.forthvalleychamber.co.uk and will close on December 31st with the initial shortlisting taking place early in January. Shortlisted finalists will then be invited to present to a panel of judges at Forth Valley College during the last week of January, and from these deliberations, the winners will be chosen. It is an unenviable task for the judges who found that the extremely high standard of entries this year left them with some difficult decisions. “The 2014 awards attracted an incredible number and variety of entries,” said Laurence, “and with the current membership standing at its highest so far, we expect this to increase. The competition will be fierce and while we are looking forward to celebrating the amazing work being carried out by local businesses, we know from experience how tough the decision making is going to be!” The black-tie gala dinner awards ceremony promises to be a sell-out, with hugely popular and in-demand Forensic Mind Reader Colin Cloud once again compering the event. Colin bewitched and bewildered our guests at the 2014 awards, and since then has delivered sell out performances at the Edinburgh Festival and in Las Vegas, and has just recorded his first TV series with NBC. He adds an amazing dimension to our awards and makes it a must-attend event. This year’s venue hosts will be also adding their own unique flavour to the evening with a sumptuous menu especially created by Michelin

starred chef Nick Nairn, who will also be speaking at the awards. Nick’s passion for fresh and seasonal Scottish cuisine, will convey a reflection of our best regional flavours. The evening will start with a welcoming drink and canapés served in the Stuart and Wallace lounges and this has kindly been sponsored by Grangemouth business IKM Consulting. The Champagne reception will be followed by a three-course dinner with wine in Strathallan Suite ballroom and the evening will be topped off with a signature DoubleTree freshly baked chocolate chip cookie to munch on the road home! Attendees on the evening will be a lively mixture of local businesses, invited guests and sponsors, including the category sponsors who will present the stunning crystal trophies during the evening. Chamber members were given the first opportunity to sponsor a category of their choice prior to the launch event which took place at the Stirling Highland Hotel on October 14th but if you are interested in sponsoring one of the categories listed overleaf please contact Michelle on 01324 66 55 00 to discuss availability. Local Radio Station Central FM has committed to supporting the Business Awards as Radio Sponsor and will be promoting the event, the sponsors and the finalists in the run-up to the big day, and in post-event interviews with the winners. Andrew McMurray of Central FM commented, “103.1 Central FM are extremely proud and excited to be the official radio sponsor for Forth Valley Chamber of Commerce Business Awards 2015. We’re really looking forward to supporting the awards on Forth Valley’s most listened to local radio station and helping promote local businesses in this area.” If you would like to enter your company in any of the Award categories then please fill in the application form at www.forthvalleychamber.com/awards or if you would like any more information regarding sponsorship or how to get involved in the 2015 awards then contact michelle@forthvalleychamber.co.uk

The World of Water is Changing! Green Compliance Water A Global Challenge with local impacts The last few years have seen a great deal of change within the water arena both in Scotland and globally. These changes represent risks, opportunities and challenges for almost every business in the country which need to be addressed – urgently, in many cases. While Scotland is a nation rich in water resources, we are part of a global economy where water is seen as the most in demand and scarce resource. Many research papers have identified that the trend of increasing demand with reducing supply leads to increasing costs and scarcity. This is reflected by the comments from the CEO of Nestle earlier this year that his business sees it as the largest challenge that his organisation faces moving forward globally.

‘CHARGE UP’ on Electrical Safety Introductory Course Forth Valley College has created a course to help employees working within a Hazardous Environment to increase their awareness of Electrical Safety. This introductory one day or evening course - enhances FVC’s well established reputation for delivering similar programmes and aims to equip electricians and other employees with general principles, an awareness of current legislation and safe working practices when in volatile areas or under adverse conditions. A mixture of theoretical and practical exercises will be delivered in the Falkirk Campus’ state-

of-the art electrical training facilities. After completing the course successfully, candidates will have an initial platform to move on to comprehensive internationally accredited Electrical Safety courses – such as CompEx - which are delivered within the college. Forth Valley College Lead Commercial Trainer Alan Montgomery, said: “This course has been designed by our team to introduce awareness and appreciation of Electrical Safety within Hazardous Environments.”

“It is regarded as an introduction to these areas and aims to provide our candidates with a basic understanding in the selection of equipment and minimum requirements of installation practices including glanding and assembly”. We Are The Future

– from student digs to International Summit!

C

hamber members We Are the Future have had a meteoric rise to international success in recent months, going from a vision of social entrepreneurship held by 19 year old CEO Bruce Walker, to a global force to be reckoned with. Within a whirlwind 18 months the organisation went from being a student project, to a global organisation operating in the US, Europe and UAE. Following The Scottish Start-up Summit in 2013, which was voted within the top 5 entrepreneurial events to attend in the UK and the largest start-up event for entrepreneurs in Europe, the team behind We Are The Future (WATF) decided to go global and by July had launched in San Francisco. WATF organised a national competition to find 6 of Scotland’s top young entrepreneurs, with the aim of taking them on a tour of Silicon Valley to experience life as a US start-up, and then organised a Global Start-up Summit to close the week. Over 7 days, the winners toured Silicon Valley, visiting the headquarters of global brands, including Apple, Google, AirBnB and HP. The week ended with The San Francisco Global Start-up Summit organised by WATF, which garnered attention from VC’s, start-ups and organisations including eBay, Google and Silicon Valley Bank. Following the huge success from San Francisco, WATF are now working in partnerships to deliver an event in Los Angeles this October called TechOut LA - www.techoutla.com - and a Global Entrepreneurship Summit in Abu Dhabi in December. However, the biggest event of the year The Start-Up Summit 2014, will take place

BUSINESS NEWS

The winter blues return

D

espite the fantastic Indian summer we’ve all been enjoying, winter will be upon us before we know it, bringing with it the usual colds, flu and other winter bugs. For small businesses this can be a real pain, and this has not been helped by the withdrawal of the Percentage Threshold Scheme (PTS) that small employers were able to offset against their Statutory Sick Pay due to employees absent for more than 3 days. This means that employers have to face the full burden of paying SSP for the duration of all sickness absence periods. The thinking behind this was to encourage employers to manage sickness absences more effectively and the money that the government saves is being invested in a new ‘Health and Work Service’. This service, due to be up and running in late 2014, will give employers, employees and GPs advice on helping an employee return to work. The DWP defended the decision by saying ‘Any financial loss to businesses from the ending of PTS will more than likely be offset by a reduction in lost working days, earlier return to work and increased economic output’. This is all well and good, but that does not address the shortterm absences that we tend to see during the winter months. I am on the Board of Directors of a small social enterprise that helps

vulnerable and isolated women in Clackmannanshire. When the Managing Director sought advice regarding her two employees who, through sheer ill luck, had become ill at the same time, she was astounded hear that the business was liable for the full SSP payments due. Not only does the business need to find cover for the period but also an extra £87.55 per employee per week. Hooray for the fantastic volunteers who were able to step into the breach! Although absence management is something to be encouraged, it seems unfair for small businesses to be expected to shoulder this additional financial burden. Having worked for a large manufacturing company for many years I know that managing sickness absence is an extremely time consuming and costly affair. Legislation such as the Equalities Act (which covers disability discrimination), Health and Safety and the EU Working Time Directives can be a minefield to negotiate, so please don’t hesitate to take expert advice to make sure you get the support you need. Avril Dunn The HR Dept (Editor’s Note: If you have any concerns about SSP legislation please contact the Chamber Helpline 0116 243 7866 or search our Members’ Directory for an HR expert.)

BUSINESS NEWS

You are invited to something different…….

H

ave you ever considered how much added value accrues to your company simply by employing someone who is a member of our Volunteer Reserve Forces?

These statistics are astonishing but are virtually unknown by employers throughout both the public and the private sectors! On Tuesday 11 November at 6.30pm in The Army Reserve Centre, Baltimore Road, Glenrothes – elements of the Reserve Forces will endeavor to prove their worth to employers. This will be done by demonstrations and very short vignettes, AND there will be opportunities for employers to ‘have a go’ at certain tasks. The evening will be rounded off with a light supper, when there will be an opportunity to talk to the Reservists and find out more of how they combine civilian and military life [and skills]. If you would like to attend please contact: Hi-offes@rfca.mod.uk 01382 631025

Research by SaBRE and endorsed by the Chartered Management Institute, found that an employer would have to purchase over £8,000 of commercial civilian training to provide the same amount of development that an average Reservist’s military service provides in a year. This research relates only to the skills that are relevant to the civilian workplace. Experience gained from an average period of mobilisation, including pre-deployment training, is worth around £8,300 for a Private, £14,600 for a Sergeant and £18,400 for an Officer.
