The Course
Golfers of all shapes, sizes and abilities have been enjoying the glorious views from our course high above Helensburgh town since 1893. To the south stretches the Clyde estuary and the hills of the Isle of Arran, and to the north lies Loch Lomond and the Trossachs. The course is laid out over 18 holes of not too strenuous terrain, totalling 5,940 yards with a par of 69, and is an enjoyable test of golf for high and low handicap alike.

1st High Hopes 277yds Par 4 SI 13
A good tee shot, with a long iron or short wood and short iron on to the green sloping back towards the tee will provide a birdie opportunity. Big hitters might consider driving the green and going for an eagle, but bunkers short of the green and to the right and left are very much in play. The first of many superb views of the Clyde estuary.
2nd Fruin 423yds Par 4 SI 1
Although the second longest par 4, club choice is critical to avoid finishing partly up a hill just over 200yards away. Doing so will leave a level stance for another long iron or fairway wood for the blind second. Finding the green in two shots is good play here.
3rd Mirror OF the Moor 175yds Par 3 SI 11
Club selection could be anything from a No 7 iron to a 3 wood depending on the wind. The pond (the Mirror) lies to the right, the fence marks the oob boundary to the left, and bunkers surround the otherwise tempting green. The green slopes from back to front and helps stop the ball.
4th Ben Bouie 365yds Par 4 SI 7
A good drive down two slopes, stopping before the ditch, will leave a short-iron approach to the slightly elevated green, taking care to prevent the ball running through. A reasonable birdie chance. As you walk towards the green, take in the panoramic view to your right.
5th Bunker Hill 255yds Par 4 SI 15
The green at the top of the hill is drivable by the ‘big hitters’, but a little course management is advisable. Bunkers front left and right may catch the ball. It is wiser to lay up or be pin high right leaving a simple pitch and, hopefully, a single putt.
6th Loch Lomond 394yds Par 4 SI 5
The classic way to play the hole is not to cut the corner, risking the ‘out of bounds’ on the left. Instead, shape the shot for the hole and draw the ball round the corner to leave a manageable approach landing directly on the green to avoid unpredictable bounces and
run off. Views across to your left take in Loch Lomond and part of the Trossachs.
14th Baillie’s Brig 396yds Par 4 SI 6
A good drive with the object of finishing on the left of the fairway on the upslope leaves a reasonable chance of reaching the green in regulation.
A long drive over the dip will leave you over the brow of the hill but beware of the bunkers at either side of the fairway. A second shot played down the right hand side will reach the green, which slopes right to left and back to front and is difficult to read. Fly the green to avoid unpredictable bounces.
8th Sundowner 362yds Par 4 SI 9
15th Churchill 369yds Par 4 SI 12
7th Seaward 404yds Par 4 SI 3
Try and reach the top of the hill with your drive and run on, leaving less than 150yds to the green. A birdie 3 is always possible.
9th Old Luss Road 126yds Par 3 SI 17
A short iron across the (out of bounds) Old Luss Road will suffice to reach the sloping green. Aim to finish below the hole for an attacking birdie putt.
10th Clyde View 440yds Par 4 SI 2
Favour the right with your drive and the contours will bring your ball back to the middle of the fairway at the bottom of the hill for a mid-iron second shot. A real par 4 this one.
11th Clyde Arran 201yds Par 3SI 16
Fantastic scenery from the tee looking out over the Clyde towards Arran. A green sloping front to back can result in a well-hit drive running through. Aiming for the right of the green will allow the contours to assist you. Don’t expect a birdie!
12th The Dell 333yds Par 4 SI 14
A blind green hidden in a tree-lined dell. Select a club which will leave you short of the gap and ideally to the right of it. From there it is just a little pitch, but check the pin position before choosing your club. There is approximately a two-club difference between the front and back of the green.
13th Lang Stracht 503yds Par 5 SI 8
A better eagle chance than the 1st. A long enough drive will leave you short of the ditch and around 180 yds to the left-to-right sloping green.
Favour the left with the drive and the slope will bring the ball back to the middle of the fairway. An errant drive to the right can leave you out of bounds and in housing. The steep dip with a ditch across the bottom insists that the second is flown all the way to the green, but before selecting your club note whether the pin is on the upper or lower tier.
16th The Quarry 146yds Par 3 SI 18
The small quarry immediately in front of the tee can seem more formidable than in reality. A small patch of unseen fairway just beyond the first bunker makes this hole one club longer than it looks. The green is the flattest on the course, making it the best birdie chance of the par 3s.
17th Due West 373yds Par 4 SI 10
A straightforward drive, ideally to the left of the fairway, and a mid to short iron will set up a birdie putt.
18th Rolling Home 400yds Par 4 SI 4
A great finishing hole. The wide fairway invites you to open your shoulders, so go for it. The further up the fairway you are the easier it is to flight the second on to the green, a stage in front of the clubhouse. The putting surface is relatively flat inviting a closing birdie.
19th Clubhouse
Time to relax and reflect on your round, refreshed by an excellent selection of food and drink.

Fraser Hall was appointed Club Professional at Helensburgh golf club in May 2005 returning to the Club 8 years after completing his Professional training and leaving to become Senior Assistant Professional at Saunton Golf Club in Devon – later becoming Head Professional at Cardrona Golf and Country Club near Peebles.
He is a class AA (t) PGA Professional with over 15 years of experience and has coached all comers to the game, from beginners to professionals. Fraser maintains a well-stocked shop, catering in quality Ladies and Gents golfing clothing. His Pro Shop is an authorised Powakaddy Repair Centre and Taylor Made Official Fitting Centre, using the latest technology on the Vector-Pro Launch Monitor. He is very popular and, therefore, a busy tutor with a range of lesson “packages” available. See the website at www.helensburghgolfclub.co.uk for up-to-date offers. Assisting Fraser is PGA Assistant, Matt Burt, who joined the Professional shop in 2009 to help Fraser with the day-to-day services at the Club.
Matt is currently doing his PGA training and is a Qualified Level 1 Coach, with a year left to do in his training. Matt is busy learning his trade teaching but also competing on Scotland’s PGA Assistants Tour & Tartan Tour. 2010 was Matt’s first full year competing and it turned out to be very encouraging one with him finishing the year well inside the Top 25, making him exempt from qualifying for the main tournaments. We hope he can fly the flag for Helensburgh in 2011! Matt is very passionate about Custom Fitting, and through the tools available to us at Helensburgh he can give an honest and thorough assessment on what will help your game – book a session NOW !! As always, Fraser would like to welcome all Members and Visitors to his shop. The door is always open- so feel free to drop in and ask any questions you might have. Fraser is a member of TGI Golf, the largest UK golf buying group and so is able to obtain any items you might wish at extremely competitive prices, we do hold a larger stock than you would imagine. Please pop in as you may be surprised.

Swing Studio “Poorly fitted golf equipment leads to bad swing habits as you adjust to compensate for your equipment” Can you afford to play with the wrong equipment this year? Can you leave it another season before you come for that lesson? For 2011 we continue to add new instructional aids to our brand new teaching and Club Fitting facility at Helensburgh Golf Club. Fraser has renovated a section of a disused greenkeeper shed and built a state of the art Swing Studio for members and visitors to receive Lessons and Custom Fitting, no matter what the weather! By utilising the latest launch monitor technology and state of the art slow motion video equipment, the team are able to provide all customers with an unrivalled level of product knowledge and service to fix and fit any level of player from Professional to Newcomer. Fraser offers a variety of different fittings dependant on what area you wish to improve and the team are more than happy to explain the different options and advantages to your game this could have.
Original clubs can also be checked and altered to ensure your equipment is helping you to lower those handicaps! Fraser is an Official Taylor Made and Ping Fitting Centre and can customise a set to meet the demands of your game, no matter what standard of player you are, and the benefits are unbelievable! This service is open to any member or non-member and the team are more than happy to answer any queries you may have on your equipment and the benefits of being custom fitted. Video Coaching in the Swing Studio is an incredible experience. Using the latest Slow Motion technology, with GASP & C Swing software, we are not only able to look at your action and identify causes for poor shots, but we can look at your progress from lesson to lesson, or even compare you to the best players in the world – side by side on the same screen !!

Do you understand the importance of putting? For 2011 we are introducing a new look as to how we teach putting.
Picture A
Picture B
Do you know how the ball should travel?
Does it sometimes feel like the ball has shot off the face? Do you sometimes leave putts miles short?
At Helensburgh we now have the technology to assess how the ball travels from your putter face. As you can hopefully see in Picture A the ball has rolled correctly, enabling control from the strike and a true roll from the ball. Picture B is all too common whereby the ball actually jumps and skids from the strike, making it impossible to control the roll and distance of the putt.
WE CAN HELP !! By analysing your technique and equipment we can get you as close as possible to picture A. In this example we changed the set up position for the pupil and increased the putter loft by 2 degrees, enabling a far better roll on the ball.

If you would like a change of activity prior to your next round then our local area offers plenty of alternatives. There is ample opportunity to mess about in or on the water, with the Gareloch and Firth of Clyde on our doorstep and Loch Lomond ten minutes away, just over the hill. There are boat trips available to various parts of the loch, and you can even take to the air in a seaplane to see the glorious views from above. Still sailing on the Clyde we have the oldest paddle steamer in the world, the Waverley, plying her trade from the middle of Glasgow to various destinations around the Firth including Helensburgh. For walkers and climbers there are many choices to suit all tastes from a gentle stroll along footpaths to more strenuous routes up Ben Lomond or The Cobbler and many other climbs all within easy reach. If a quieter day is required then you can enjoy a visit to the famous Rennie Mackintosh designed Hill House in Helensburgh. More information on the many other things to do and see in the local area can be found on; www.visitscotland.com or www.lomondguides.co.uk or from Helensburgh Tourist Office 44(0)1436 672642 If, on the other hand, you just want to play golf, that’s fine with us!
