he 2009 season is fast approaching and we look forward to a summer of good weather. I hope you like this yearbook which has been produced to give interesting information to our members and is also aimed at a wider audience as a snapshot of our Club, in which we take great pride. The last few seasons have seen a tremendous improvement in the Course. Thanks to our Head Greenkeeper, Gavin and his team, we are rapidly becoming a “must play” course in the West of Scotland. We have ambitions to become the very best of Moorland courses and have adopted many of the recommendations made by Mr. Ronnie Lumsden, the respected Course Architect. Other areas that we can be proud of include our position as very much a Town Club, where our busy social and house programme under the expert guidance of the House Manager, Gibson Beattie, makes the clubhouse the focal point for many of Helensburgh’s activities. The playing aspects of the course are managed by our Professional Fraser Hall where his enthusiastic and
friendly approach to members and visitors, teaching and coaching and the high standards within the shop are regularly commented upon. Fraser provides an exceptional service to the benefit of the Club and is very approachable. Whether or not you are a new or experienced golfer, make the most of the season ahead. Enjoy your golf, be it a social round or by taking part in the various competitions and events and good luck in playing to or obtaining your handicap. I recommend you regularly visit the Club website at www.helensburghgolfclub. co.uk for up to date details of our activities. Finally, a special welcome to our visitors. Enjoy not only the course and the Clubhouse, but also the outstanding natural beauty of the area and our National Park. n 1908 the then Club Committee resolved to build a new Clubhouse, to meet the needs of an enlarging and more demanding membership. The agreed budget was set at £2,780 including professional fees with the final certified accounts showing actual costs of £2700. A saving against budget of some 3%! This superb new Clubhouse was completed and opened the following year by the Duke of Argyll on October the 16th. 1909 he presented the Club with this stunning silver key to commemorate the occasion.
The money to pay for this Clubhouse was raised by debentures the last of which were repaid some forty years later. The original Clubhouse known as ‘ the tin hut’ was situated in1894 to the west of Old Luss Road, then altered and moved to Abercrombie Street in 1900, when the new Clubhouse was opened in 1909 it was sold to G.Galbraith of Dumbarton for £35, where it became the Clubhouse of the Vale of Leven Golf Club with parts of it still in service until the 1970’s.

The basic structure of the new Clubhouse remains today with major alterations and extensions taking place in 1965, 1973 and again in 1980’s Helensburgh Golf Club is very much a Town Club; it is the meeting place of many social organizations and activities as diverse as Art, Fishing, Indoor bowls, Bridge and Curling Clubs. It has and continues to be the venue for many organized events throughout the year from lunches and dinners on special occasions such as Christmas, Easter and Mothers day, to Club dances and dinners.

his year’s Walker Cup takes place at Merion Golf Club in Philadelphia September 12-13, with Helensburgh’s Colin Dalgleish once again captaining the Great Britain & Ireland Team. With almost all of the 2007 team turning professional, including most notably the young Irish sensation Rory McIlroy who has already stamped his mark at the highest levels of professional golf, Colin has continued his extensive travels around the British Isles and Europe following the form of potential 2009 team members. During 2008 he captained the GB&I St. Andrews Trophy Team to their fine victory over an exceptionally
HGC Yearbook 2009.indd 9
strong Continent of Europe Team at Kingsbarns, and witnessed Scotland’s historic victory in the World Amateur Team Championship in Australia. A small squad of players led by Colin also visited Merion Golf Club in September, exactly one year in advance of the Walker Cup, to familiarize themselves with the golf course and conditions, and to meet with United States Golf Association officials. Merion Golf Club certainly enjoys a unique place in the history of the game, for it was there that Bobby Jones won the 1930 US Amateur and in so doing completed the Grand Slam. It has since hosted several US Amateurs
and US Opens, although 2009 will see their first ever Walker Cup. The iconic image of Ben Hogan hitting a 1-iron to the 18th green on his way to victory in the 1950 US Open is undoubtedly one of the most famous in the game of golf. Colin has been quoted as saying he is hugely encouraged by the outstanding team and individual performances of GB&I players during 2008, and is eagerly looking forward to the match in September. It will again be covered on TV. Members may also learn more at www.2009walkercup.org 9

elensburgh Golf Club is privileged to have 41 year old Gary Orr as the Club’s Tournament Professional. While as a young child, Gary’s first brush with the sport was at Vale of Leven Golf Club, it was shortly thereafter he became a junior member of Helensburgh and as a child and a teenager spent long hours of his formative golfing life playing and practising endlessly over the town links As Junior Champion and winner of the prestigious Helensburgh Boys’ Open Championship he carried the Club’s name with pride and with distinction at County, National and International level before turning professional and joining fellow Scot Lee Johnston as his apprentice at Burhill Golf Club. His apprenticeship completed, he set out to make his name on the professional circuit and enjoyed the distinction of being named as Rookie of the Year in 1993 which coincided with the Club’s Centenary Year. He had already made a tremendous impression as
a wonderful ambassador for the club and the members recognised his contribution to the history and tradition of the Club by electing him as an Honorary Member and by making a suitable presentation to him to mark the occasion at the Centenary Dinner in the Commodore Hotel. When he terminated his association with Burhill Golf Club he agreed to represent Helensburgh on the European Tour last year on his return to the circuit after recovering from injury. He had a successful year finishing 64th in the Order of Merit. A quiet family man, he restricts his appearances to ensure that he spends much quality time with his wife Sarah and sons Jamie (9) and Bobby (6). His programme for 2009 retains that balance and includes tour events in Scotland at Loch Lomond, Gleneagles and at Turnberry for The Open.

here are 123 lady members and 6 junior girls in Helensburgh Golf Club which is around a sixth of the membership. About 17 of these are associates who are non-playing members. We organise weekly competitions throughout the season on Tuesdays and Sundays, with a variety of times available. There are a number of new members who have organised themselves into a “roll up and play” group that meets three times a week, weather permitting. Members with handicaps can also take part in knockout competitions and representative matches with other clubs. Our section is responsible for organising several open competitions during the season. These continue to be successful
and enjoyable days out for visitors and we are grateful to the local businesses who sponsor us. Details of these are on the club web-site. We also run mixed social 11 hole golf competitions on selected Friday evenings with a meal in the clubhouse afterwards. Several of our members have passed Level One of the Junior Coaching Initiative, and they assist the club professional with coaching the junior boys and girls. During the summer school holidays, there are two trophies to be played for, which involve both ladies and juniors. Our Winter League and Winter Points Competitions, which remain very popular, are played over 11 holes. On the social scene in the winter months, we help with the Monday evening bridge club and
there is an informal gathering of bridge players, beginners and improvers, on Thursday mornings. One of our priorities is to raise money for a chosen charity. Last season we managed to raise £2,502, the majority of which went to Barnardos. It is encouraging to see so many new members gaining handicaps and taking part in our competitions, but it is also great to see them supporting other newer members to play, and join them in social golf. We hope that this reflects the ideals of our group, supporting each other, and welcoming newcomers. Doreen Sneddon Ladies’ Captain

he second year of Clubgolf coaching was successfully completed last summer. As in the previous year the course took place in two sections, one running for 6 weeks in May and June, and the other for a further 6 weeks over September and October. Two separate sessions were held each week, giving pupils the choice of attending on a Sunday or Thursday afternoon, with sessions lasting for one hour each. A total of 17 juniors attended the course, out of which 5 were successful in achieving Stage 1 of their Junior Golf Passport, having reached the required level of proficiency on completion of the
second year. They will now move on to more advanced coaching this year. It is hoped that the remaining youngsters will return to complete the outstanding items and qualify for Stage 1 during 2009. The club now has 12 coaches who hold PGA Level 1 certification, and the Junior Clubgolf scheme is available to all 9-11 year olds, with a view to introducing as many youngsters within that age group to an enjoyable and healthy hobby. They won’t all be as good as Tiger Woods maybe, but they can have a great deal of fun trying!

e live in a beautiful area of Scotland at the western edge of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, so if you do not want to golf every day, we have a wide variety of other attractions locally. Here are a few suggestions;
You will now be ready for a cup of tea, and where better to go than the tea room in the famous Rennie Mackintosh designed HILL HOUSE in Helensburgh, where you will see a blend of art nouveau and traditional country house in a magnificent setting.
No better way to cheer you up, if your last round was not up to expectation, than a spot of WHISKY TASTING. We have two distilleries within a half hour drive at Auchentoshan, Old Kilpatrick, tel +44 (0) 1389 878561 and Glengoyne, Killearn, +44(0) 1360 550254, both of which welcome visitors and are open all year round.
Finally, to inspire you before you step back onto our first tee, why not pay a visit to DUMBARTON CASTLE situated on a plug of volcanic rock on the northern bank of the river Clyde, dating back to the Roman period, and now a site of special scientific interest. A climb up the 547 steps will be rewarded by spectacular views up river and toward the open sea.
If the drams went down rather too well you might now feel in need of a good MOUNTAIN WALK to clear your head, and here we are spoilt for choice with Ben Lomond (1,00m/3300ft), Ben Arthur - otherwise known as The Cobbler - (890m/2937ft), Ben Ledi (760m/2508ft) and Ben A’an (454m/1498ft) all within easy reach. Quiet contemplation may be more to your liking, in which case FISHING might be your choice. Here again there are a number of potential venues and you could take your pick from Helensburgh Reservoir, Loch Lomond, Loch Sloy and local rivers Endrick, near Drymen and Leven at Dumbarton.
Now that’s enough relaxation - back to the serious business of golf. Further information available from; www.visitscottishheartlands.com www.visitscotland.com Helensburgh Tourist Information Office: +44(0)1436 672642

Grip Pressure - Putting is very much about feel so a light grip will help the putter head to release naturally which helps to start the ball on it’s intended line and control the distance the ball travels. It is a sure sign that you are gripping the putting too tight if your finger tips turn white. The putter is the only club in the bag with a flat front to the grip so as you can see in picture 1 both thumbs should be placed in a neutral position straight down the front of this grip.
Set up - Having a solid neutral set up lays the foundations for a consistent repeatable stroke. Your stance should be roughly shoulder width apart see picture 2 which will provide a stable base. Your ball position should be slightly left of centre in your stance (right of centre for left handers). A good way to check you are the correct distances away from the ball drop a ball from your left eye and if it hits you ball you are in good position if not adjust your current ball position accordingly.
Stroke length – Making sure the
putter head is accelerating into the ball is another key to solid consistent putting. To help with this concentrate on making a short backstroke see picture 3 and accelerate into a longer through stroke see picture 4, this will ensure you avoid decelerating into the ball and leaving your out short. A common trait of all good putters is that once they strike their putt they hold the finish of the through stroke and watch the ball until it comes to a complete stop. This will make sure you are in control of your stroke and if you do happen to miss the putt you will get an idea of how the ball will break on the way back and should cut out unwanted 3 putts. Remind yourself to Stroke the ball and not hit at the ball.

he Club has 5 full time Greenkeepers, led by our Course Manager, Gavin Jarvis and all assisted by Gavin’s faithful Jack Russell. Bullseye (who spends a lot of time controlling the rabbit population!)
Turf conditioning by scarifying along with soil relieving through the use of slitting, coring and spiking has resulted in significant improvements to the playing surfaces as well as the course improving aesthetically.
A moorland course requires a lot of work to keep water under control and the Club has invested significantly in renewing and extending drainage – particularly for the greens – over recent years. A rolling 5 year plan of improvements is ongoing which is designed to make our course one of the finest moorland courses in the Scotland.
High traffic areas have been protected using matting which allows grass to grow through it.
Investment in machinery has been significant with nearly £150000 being spent in the last few years.
Gavin believes in using organic turf treatments wherever possible and encouraging natural grass and root growth by correct dressing and aeration. His following of this culture has dramatically improved the course and, in particular, the putting surfaces in recent years. 35

elensburgh is a premier moorland Golf Course set above the town.
Its location affords golfers stunning views across the Clyde Estuary towards Arran and Bute in the South West and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs in the North. The original 9-hole layout was in use by October of 1893, having been approved by Old Tom Morris for a fee of ÂŁ1 plus expenses for the day. By 1905, the course

had been extended to 18 holes. James Braid visited Helensburgh golf club in the 1920s setting out several bunkers, which are still catching out the golfer of today. The length of the course is 6104 yards; with a par of 69 and the Standard Scratch Score of 70. The course record of 62 was set by club Junior member Simon Barras (age 16), on 3rd July 2005.

1st High Hopes 283yds Par 4 SI 13
A good tee shot, with a long iron or short wood and short iron on to the green sloping back towards the tee will provide a birdie opportunity. Big hitters might consider driving the green and going for an eagle, but bunkers short of the green and to the right and left are very much in play. The first of many superb views of the Clyde estuary.
2nd Fruin 429yds Par 4 SI 1
7th Seaward 408yds Par 4 SI 3
A good drive with the object of finishing on the left of the fairway on the upslope leaves a reasonable chance of reaching the green in regulation.
8th Sundowner 371yds Par 4 SI 9
Try and reach the top of the hill with your drive and run on, leaving less than 150yds to the green. A birdie 3 is always possible.
Although the second longest par 4, club choice is critical to avoid finishing partly up a hill just over 200yards away. Doing so will leave a level stance for another long iron or fairway wood for the blind second. Finding the green in two shots is good play here.
9th Old Luss Road 131yds Par 3 SI 17
3rd Mirror on the Moor 182yds Par 3 SI 11
10th Clyde View 440yds Par 4 SI 2
Club selection could be anything from a No 7 iron to a 3 wood depending on the wind. A tempting green protected by a front bunker and trees surrounding the pond and the out of bounds left side. The green slopes from back to front and helps stop the ball.
4th Ben Bouie 372yds Par 4 SI 7
A good drive down two slopes, stopping before the ditch, will leave a short-iron approach to the slightly elevated green, taking care to prevent the ball running through. A reasonable birdie chance. As you walk towards the green, take in the panoramic view to your right.
5th Bunker Hill 300yds Par 4 SI 15
The green at the top of the hill is drivable by the ‘big hitters’, but a little course management is advisable. Bunkers front left and right may catch the ball. It is wiser to lay up or be pin high right leaving a simple pitch and, hopefully, a single put.
6th Loch Lomond 405yds Par 4 SI 5
The classic way to play the hole is not to cut the corner, risking the ‘out of bounds’ on the left. Instead, shape the shot for the hole and draw the ball round the corner to leave a manageable approach landing directly on the green to avoid unpredictable bounces and run off. Views across to your left take in Loch Lomond and part of the Trossachs.
HGC Yearbook 2009.indd 37
A short iron across the (out of bounds) Old Luss Road will suffice to reach the sloping green. Aim to finish below the hole for an attacking birdie putt.
Favour the right with your drive and the contours will bring your ball back to the middle of the fairway at the bottom of the hill for a mid-iron second shot. A real par 4 this one.
11th Clyde Arran 210yds Par 3SI 16
Fantastic scenery from the tee looking out over the Clyde towards Arran. A green sloping front to back can result in a well-hit drive running through. Aiming for the right of the green will allow the contours to assist you. Don’t expect a birdie!
12th The Dell 339yds Par 4 SI 14
A blind green hidden in a tree-lined dell. Select a club which will leave you short of the gap and ideally to the right of it. From there it is just a little pitch, but check the pin position before choosing your club. There is approximately a two-club difference between the front and back of the green.
13th Lang Stracht 508yds Par 5 SI 8
A better eagle chance than the 1st. A long enough drive will leave you short of the ditch and around 180 yds to the left-to-right sloping green.
14th Baillie’s Brig 408yds Par 4 SI 6
A long drive over the dip will leave you over the brow of the hill but beware of the bunkers at either side of the fairway. A second shot played down the right hand side will reach the green, which slopes right to left and back to front and is difficult to read. Fly the green to avoid unpredictable bounces.
15th Churchill 371yds Par 4 SI 12
Favour the left with the drive and the slope will bring the ball back to the middle of the fairway. An errant drive to the right can leave you out of bounds and in housing. The steep dip with a ditch across the bottom insists that the second is flown all the way to the green, but before selecting your club note whether the pin is on the upper or lower tier.
16th The Quarry 150yds Par 3 SI 18
The small quarry immediately in front of the tee can seem more formidable than in reality. A small patch of unseen fairway just beyond the first bunker makes this hole one club longer than it looks. The green is the flattest on the course, making it the best birdie chance of the par 3s.
17th Due West 379yds Par 4 SI 10
A straightforward drive, ideally to the left of the fairway, and a mid to short iron will set up a birdie putt.
18th Rolling Home 404yds Par 4 SI 4
A great finishing hole. The wide fairway invites you to open your shoulders, so go for it. The further up the fairway you are the easier it is to flight the second on to the green, a stage in front of the clubhouse. The putting surface is relatively flat inviting a closing birdie.
19th Clubhouse
Time to relax and reflect on your round, refreshed by an excellent selection of refreshments
