OPENING SHOT

A

s my first “opening shot” I have some large and highly polished shoes to fill. On behalf of the membership, the executive team and the board I would like to thank Tim for his outstanding contribution to the Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce as our President for the last two years. As a shy and retiring type I’m sure I can sense his blushes, but he demonstrated great energy, passion, experience and as a military man lead from the front helping to create a new era for DACC.

There is a great feeling of optimism and a growing confidence within the Dundee and Angus region that we are building a significant future for our members and the wider community. I look forward to playing a part in this collaborative effort

Change is also happening within the executive team by the time you read this a few new faces will have joined the team. On a personal level I look forward to engaging with as many members and organisations as possible to understand more about your businesses and how together, we can make DACC the most dynamic and relevant chamber in

the UK. The Chamber network is a great and highly respected historic brand. Visitors from outside of the UK often use the Chamber as the first port of call to help navigate the local landscape. This is one way that that we enable connectivity. On reflection connectivity is an important word for the development of the region on many levels. It is a key building block to start collaborations. Dundee is connecting with the world in new ways such as part of the UNESCO World City of Design. Connections are already underway and visitors will be coming to Dundee: we need to be ready to welcome them. Locally it’s important to connect the benefits delivered by the Waterfront development to the wider region both geographically and socially. We also need to be digitally connected with access to the fastest data speeds possible by building networks for future needs not just existing requirements. Government, council and business alike recognise this as a high priority. The digital world is all about connectivity. There is a great feeling of optimism and a growing confidence within the Dundee and Angus region that we are building a significant future for our members and the wider community. I look forward to playing a part in this collaborative effort.

A WELCOME FROM THE CEO

A

s I put the finishing touches to our Summer magazine, I am struck by just how much has happened within our City and Region during the second quarter of 2016. The Chamber is going through the next stage of our own journey, as we welcome a new President and fill two of our vacant posts to complete the new Membership team. Ensuring we represent as broad a range of businesses as possible is one of our key priorities, so whether we are out talking to the micro business setting up a new consultancy in Dundee, or sitting down to discuss people, culture and strategy with one of the largest Angus employers, being relevant and responsive to member needs is at the heart of what we do. Looking back at the first half of the year, we’ve held over 25 events, with more than 1000 attendees. We’ve worked with partners to deliver a packed Tourism Conference, helped to launch the Courier Business Awards to local businesses and been part of what was an incredible month of design during May. And rounding off the month of June, we’ve been helping members connect across Perthshire and Fife Chambers, and seen the phenomenon that is the Oor Wullie Bucket Trail launch and exceed all expectations as the local people get out and about, snapping #oorselfie pictures as they go! We went with Scottish Chambers and representatives from across the Chamber network to a meeting with Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Jobs and Fair Work, Keith Brown MSP at the Scottish Parliament to discuss business concerns, views and responses following the recent Brexit vote. The discussion was very open and helpful, with a number of key asks from

Whether we are out talking to the micro business setting up a new consultancy in Dundee, or sitting down to discuss people, culture and strategy with one of the largest Angus employers, being relevant and responsive to member needs is at the heart of what we do

business being listened to and actions to be followed up. The Scottish Government will lend their support, where they can, to ensure we see continuity of business, investment where needed and support for businesses and their workforces. Businesses across Dundee and Angus are ambitious and looking to opportunities for the future – we must ensure that key projects and support for business remain at the heart of economic growth and development in our region.

He will also be involved in continuously developing and reviewing relevant services for members, leading the DACC123 Member Promise & Member lunches, coordinating DACC’s involvement in the Business Mentoring programme and supporting the chamber’s Export Documentation Service. danielcargill@ dundeeandanguschamber.co.uk Simon joins us with a wealth of experience in cross sector recruitment, business development and account management experience – having been based in London, the Middle East and, for the last 5 years, in NE Scotland. NEWS & EVENTS

Royal Bank of Scotland Explorer breakfasts at Dundee Airport ON TUESDAY 19TH April, more than 75 people attended another in the series of Royal Bank of Scotland Explorer breakfasts. The event took place at Dundee Airport, just over one month before the international flights to Amsterdam took off. Attendees enjoyed an ‘inflight’ meal courtesy of Fresh-jet, while hearing updates from Derrick Lang, Airport Manager on the activities of the airport. The airport enjoys much more than simply commercial flights, and we learned about the breadth of private and charter traffic that comes through the airport during the Dunhill and The Open at St Andrews golf tournaments, the work to support and back-up Aberdeen airport with oil industry helicopter landings, and the fire safety training that the team carries out. Roy Bogle, Director of Loganair, operator of the commercial flights between Dundee and London Stansted, updated the audience on passenger numbers, reliability of the flights and the sustained upturn in passenger numbers following the closure of the Forth Road Bridge at the end of 2015. He received very useful feedback from the attendees on their experience of using the flights to London, what their preferences might be and how his service supports business travel for the local community. After some of the members were presented with their membership certificates, attendees made their way airside to see the work the pilot school, Tayside Aviation, and meet some of their young trainees. A visit to meet the fire training school and then a climb into the control tower topped off what was another stand-out event for Chamber members. Our thanks go to our hosts, our sponsors and the members for helping make the event such a success.

Dundee & Angus Tourism Conference THE CHAMBER WORKED with local partners, Dundee City Council, Angus Council, VisitScotland and Business Gateway to deliver the Dundee & Angus Tourism Conference 2016. Celebrating the Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design, the conference took place at the newly restored 1833 High Mill, part of the Verdant Works Museum which provided attendees with a fascinating insight into Dundee’s jute heritage. The conference brought together a wide variety of businesses involved in the tourism sector, as well as some who perhaps don’t consider themselves to be ‘tourism’ businesses. Held during Scottish Tourism week, the programme focussed on the benefits of a regional approach to tourism. Speakers included Andy Lothian, Chief Executive of Insights, and Chairman of Dundee Heritage Trust, Fergus Ewing, Minister for Business, Energy and Tourism, Stephen Leckie, Chief Executive of Crieff Hydro and Chairman of the Scottish Tourism Alliance, Jane Ferguson, Director of Audiences and Media for the V&A Dundee, Kerrie Sweeney, Chief Executive Officer of the Titanic Foundation, Yvonne Corbett, Managing Director of the House of Turin and Pete Reid, Falkirk Council. The conference was followed by a unique ‘Opportunity Summit’ that supported and encouraged delegates to think about how they could develop new business ideas to maximise the opportunities that the V&A Museum of Design will bring to the region when it opens in 2018. A capacity audience left the conference inspired, motivated to develop their businesses and with lots of ideas to connect their businesses to each other and to the wider developments happening locally, nationally and internationally.

Barnetts opens new design showcase on the Waterfront A STATE-OF-THE-ART BUILDING, featuring world-class design, has opened on Dundee’s Waterfront. Barnetts presents the Volvo Retail Experience (VRE). The new customer-focused, Scandinavian-inspired showroom, the first in Scotland, features cutting-edge style and continues the long tradition of innovation and classleading service begun by founder Bob Barnett when he started selling Volvos in the Seagate back in 1965. While it may be Swedish cool on the outside, there’s a warm welcome inside! The Volvo Retail Experience (VRE) concept sees 40% of the showroom transformed into a ‘living room’ with Scandinavian-designed furniture for customers to relax on, free wifi and Swedish treats and coffee. The remaining 60% becomes the ‘street’ displaying Volvo’s new car range. The proud link with the Volvo marque is managed by Paul Barnett, the Chairman of Barnetts Motor Group and son of the founder. He’s overseen the introduction of Volvo’s latest retail showroom concept, continuing a passion for bringing the best in customer experience to Barnetts. Paul said: “We’re very proud to be investing in the city once again through this new showroom. It’s part of a £1m investment in the site, turning the multi-franchise site at Riverside Drive into a state-of-the-art showcase for the future of car retailing, including a customer handover centre utilising hi-tech 3D projection mapping, as well as a car photography studio. Digital design firm branches out into online marketing DIGITAL DESIGN AND development agency Blue2 Digital has increased its services with the launch of online marketing capabilities. The Broughty Ferry-based firm is now delivering digital marketing packages which include social media management, online advertising, SEO, PPC and email marketing. This is an extension of the content creation services they began offering last year when they hired Linda Isles as content producer to provide blog writing and website content generation for clients. The team has been further extended with the appointment of Andy McGowan as Digital Marketing Manager. With experience in generating online marketing campaigns for a variety of businesses across all sectors, Andy has already helped the team drive some impressive results for Blue2’s clients. Andy says: “Using social media platforms and online advertising is growing in popularity because it is cost-effective, measurable and targeted, and we’re seeing some great results. From just one blog post written by us addressing a common customer question and a Facebook post to promote it, one of our clients received four bookings and two enquiries, directly attributed to our campaign. The CEO of that firm tells us that it is ‘by far the most successful bit of marketing we have done and a huge return on investment.’ “Offering digital marketing is a logical step for Blue2. Our core business is website and systems design and development, so it makes sense for us to extend that by creating content for our clients that will make their sites even better, help their customers, build trust in their brand and ultimately drive business.” Blue2 are currently offering introductory one-month trial packages for clients and Chamber members. Contact them for more details by emailing linda@blue2.co.uk or amcgowan@blue2.co.uk or call 01382 223111.

Prestigious award for Blackadders Employment Law team BLACKADDERS EMPLOYMENT LAW team were crowned winners of “Employment Team of the Year” at the Scott & Company Legal Awards 2016. The prestigious event, held at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh on 24th March, saw the Blackadders team nominated as one of 35 finalists. The judging panel stated the process had been very difficult, given the high calibre of entries in all categories. However, ultimately, they felt the Blackadders’ Employment Team were the best in their category. In addition to dealing with a number of “high profile cases” over the past 12 months, the judges stated that Blackadders’ Employment Team offered “a fresh and innovative approach” to employment law which made them stand out as leaders in their field. Simon Allison, Head of the Employment Team, said he was surprised and extremely honoured to have won the award given the high standard of the finalists. He dedicated it to his team on the basis that they had worked really well together on various projects over the past year and were, in his view, thoroughly deserving of the award.

D&A College supports business IN A BID to forge closer links with the business community, D&A College commissioned Rocket Science to review its services to business. The company sought independent feedback into customer perceptions of the college’s services including the fitness for purpose, fee competitiveness, quality, responsiveness and level of awareness of the services offered. The college’s strong contribution towards entrepreneurship was recognised as was D&A’s contribution to the Tayside economy and the college’s role in the skills and employability system. The experience of businesses which have purchased services from the college was predominantly positive with 94% saying the college was able to meet at least some needs closely and 60% rating the quality as high or very high. More than 80% of businesses said D&A services were at least as good as

other private providers with 88% rating the college’s fee competitiveness/value for money alongside or better than private providers. Principal Grant Ritchie said: “These results show that organisations that choose to undergo staff training at D&A College overwhelmingly feed back high degrees of satisfaction with the delivery of courses.” Grant was keen to stress that all monies received are ploughed into training future cohorts of potential employees. “Companies which adhere to any form of corporate social responsibility will be pleased to know every pound spent with D&A College is reinvested to support the next generation of the region’s workforce. This distinguishes us from independent training companies.”

Douglas Shand joins PwC DOUGLAS SHAND HAS joined PwC in Scotland as a Director and Head of Innovation Incentives. In his role, Douglas will be working with companies on ways to improve the effectiveness of their product strategy and find ways to fund innovation which will ultimately grow their business and increase their bottom line. Douglas has often been cited as an inspiring leader who has won international awards for innovation and consistently delivers business benefit from technology. He is consistently at the cutting edge of helping businesses not only make the most of what they have, particularly maximising incentives for innovation, but also look ahead to new opportunities and how to be best placed to maximise income. Douglas said: “Quite often when companies hear of research and development costs, or of doing things in a new way, barriers come up as it’s seen as something that is for larger firms or needs massive investment. In this agile-led era we are helping companies look beyond that. “Obviously there’s huge interest at the moment at what technology can do and we’re very focused on looking at that – it’s tech not tax – and showing companies how much funding there is to help them succeed in the marketplace. Having said that, there are companies out there providing some fantastic services and we’re also making sure they take advantages of up-to-date tax changes and European regulation to stay in business. There’re millions of pounds out there for companies, especially in the areas of tax credits, patent benefits and grant support.” Douglas’s passion for innovation extends beyond helping existing businesses and being a keynote speaker at global high-profile events. He is also the founder of re-wire, an education initiative which gives young people the opportunity to harness their enthusiasm for technology and develop the skills to become creators of technology and not just consumers.

Innovation needn’t be taxing RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT (R&D) tax credits are the government’s most generous funding mechanism, but they’re also its most under-claimed. Designed as a means to reward innovation and increase the overall competitiveness of the UK economy, the scheme enables companies that incur costs in developing or improving their products, processes, knowledge or technologies to receive a cash payment or tax deduction. To date, around 6% of UK businesses have taken advantage of R&D tax credits with average UK claims sitting at a whopping £46,000. However, in Tayside a much smaller percentage of businesses have tapped into this HMRC scheme. This means that as a region we are losing out on millions of pounds of valuable income. CIK Solutions helps innovative and eligible Tayside companies maximise their R&D tax relief and successfully claim what they are legitimately due. Combining extensive knowledge of HMRC’s R&D qualification guidelines with the ability to quickly gain an intimate understanding of clients’ businesses in order to identify areas of legitimate R&D, CIK Solutions are able to prepare all mandatory technical reports along with supporting financial documentation to comply with HMRC’s guidelines. CIK Solutions believe that many companies are either unaware of the scheme or simply don’t believe that they qualify. The point to remember is that businesses across all sectors in Tayside are performing R&D on a daily basis and are unnecessarily absorbing costs that qualify for R&D tax relief. CIK Solutions is committed to increasing the awareness of R&D tax credits in Tayside and making sure local businesses don’t miss out. The CIK Solutions model has no upfront costs and is based on a fee contingent on success which eliminates any financial risk in submitting a claim. New rules for facial treatments DR AISLING HANLY of Enhance Facial Aesthetics Ltd has welcomed the new safety rules for facial treatments which have come into force in Scotland, but she’s warning patients that the providers who present most risk won’t be regulated for at least another two years. Dr Aisling Hanly. Since April 1st, independent clinics providing private treatments, including nonsurgical aesthetic treatments such as botox and fillers, have to register with Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS). They will be subject to regular inspection, answerable to complaints via HIS and liable

to enforcement action if their services don’t comply with the National Care Standards or legislation. Currently, cosmetic treatment providers such beauty therapists aren’t covered by this legislation, but it’s understood from 2018 they’ll have to operate under a licence issued by their local authority. Dr Hanly welcomes the new moves as patients will see which providers are safest and will eventually help ensure high standards of practice on safety aspects such as avoiding cross-infection. Meantime, she’s advising anyone considering treatment to think safety first and have it carried out by a trained medical professional registered with HIS. Dr Hanly has been a dentist since 1997 and began providing facial aesthetics treatments as Enhance Facial Aesthetics at KDP in Kirriemuir in 2010. She’s undergone extensive training and was one of the first practitioners in Scotland to be awarded the Quality Assurance mark from Independent Healthcare Advisory Services (IHAS). She won Best Cosmetic Dentist at the 2015 Scotland’s Medical Cosmetic Awards. For more information about Enhance Facial Aesthetics, go to www.kirriemuirdentalpractice.co.uk/aboutenhance.asp

The new centre will combine the needs of entrepreneurial education within the University of Dundee and provide a beacon of entrepreneurship, which contains an energised and inspiring accelerator programme to fast track business growth, open to both students and the public, which will launch many more high growth ventures into the city. Elevator Chief Executive, Gary McEwan, who is Professor of Entrepreneurship at the University of Dundee, believes the city is on the threshold of entrepreneurial renaissance and there will be a wave of opportunity for individuals and businesses to embrace in the face of the city’s transformation. He commented: “Collaborating with the University of Dundee to open a Centre of Entrepreneurship within the city is an aspiration we have been working on for many years. This new centre in Dundee will follow our best practice and focus on creating an inspiring environment in which budding entrepreneurs, students and supporters of enterprise, can come together to get free advice, generate ideas, receive support, mentoring and network. “The city of Dundee is in a very strong position to embrace innovation and diversity. There are real opportunities across all sectors – technology, food and drink, tourism and biotechnology – which entrepreneurs can utilise. “We are committed to helping support and realise ambitions of the city. The Elevator programme offered from the new centre will help challenge aspiring entrepreneurs, their goals, their plans and business ideas, for scale and growth. We will teach entrepreneurial disciplines, best practice for business growth and develop idea generation and entrepreneurial thinking to encourage new business start-ups – all of which will boost a city on the verge of major regeneration.” The location for the new centre has been identified close to the edge of the University of Dundee’s campus, within existing retail space.

The new centre will allow for collaboration and a more joined up approach within the University of Dundee and between individuals and a wide range of organisations across Dundee, including Dundee City Council, Dundee & Angus College, Scottish Enterprise, Business Gateway, Entrepreneurial Scotland, as well as other universities and further education establishments. Graham Nicholson, Director of Student Services at the University of Dundee, said: “We are committed to giving our students and graduates the skills to pursue entrepreneurial opportunities and also the facilities that will support them. This agreement with Elevator will create a dedicated enterprise space on campus which will be a centre of graduate entrepreneurship for the city, available for the use of students, graduates and others, and giving them access to a wide range of services and support. Will Dawson, convener of Dundee City Council’s city development committee said: “The range of opportunities in the city right now and in the near future are almost limitless when considering the scale of development that is going on. “The chances that are being created come in a wide variety of areas and, as well as traditional roles, also offer the right type of dynamic, creative and driven individual that we have in Dundee, ways of creating wealth and employment for themselves and ultimately other people. “The new centre at the University of Dundee in conjunction with Elevator will help people to realise these ambitions and deliver for them and the city.” Veronica Lynch, Director of External Relations at Dundee and Angus College added: “This will provide a strong progression route for tenants in the Enterprise D&A incubator at Dundee & Angus College to accelerate the growth of their businesses. We look forward to working more closely with the University of Dundee and Elevator to increase the numbers of start-up businesses across the region.” Chris van der Kuyl, Chairman of Entrepreneurial Scotland, said: “I am passionate about entrepreneurship and the city of Dundee, so it’s a particular pleasure that as chair of Entrepreneurial Scotland I am able to support Elevator with the launch of this fantastic new Centre of Entrepreneurship in my home city.” www.elevatoruk.com Twitter: @ElevatorUK/ Facebook: /UKElevator LinkedIn: ElevatorUK

£1.35 million contract for Caltech lifts CALTECH LIFTS HAS started work on a cutting-edge £1.35m multistorey flats lift replacement project for Dundee City Council. The family firm, founded by Howard Renwick and now run by his sons Andrew and Fraser, was awarded the contract to replace eight passenger lifts in council-owned multi-storey blocks

with state-of-the-art anti-vandal models. Work has begun at Ancrum Court, Burnside Court, Lansdowne Court and Pitalpin Court. Managing Director Andrew Renwick said: “We’re delighted to have won this work for Dundee City Council with whom we enjoy a long and positive relationship. “As a direct result we’ve taken on two lift engineers and are recruiting two more. We also plan to take on a local Modern Apprentice and move to larger premises in Dundee.”

Fairways Recruitment Achieves Double Gold! FAIRWAYS RECRUITMENT HAS achieved both Investors in People Gold and Investors in Young People Gold accreditations. They are the first recruitment agency in Scotland to achieve Gold standard in both awards, and the fifth organisation in Scotland. In gaining accreditation at Gold level, Fairways’ solid foundation of good practice, which remains aspirational and challenging for many organisations, is demonstrated. Their true commitment to the training and development of their people is also illustrated. Gold Investors in Young People accreditation demonstrates Fairways as an employer of choice for young people and testifies to their effective Youth Employment practices. Commenting on the awards, Liz Jackson, Managing Director of Fairways said: “This is a great achievement for Fairways and we are extremely proud to achieve such a high accolade. This achievement is of course down to our staff, the people we employ on both a permanent and temporary basis. Believing in the youth of today gives so much reward not only as individuals but to the employers who nurture and develop them to become the managers and leaders of tomorrow. It is our aim to help people of all ages and abilities to achieve their aspirations and achieving both Investors in People Gold and Investors in Young People Gold, I believe, is testimony to this”. Peter Russian, Chief Executive of Investors in People Scotland, said: “These awards recognise Fairway’s commitment to good practice in relation to their people, including young people at the start of their working careers. Importantly, it is Fairway’s customers who also benefit because they rely on the quality of Fairway’s employees to help them achieve their objectives.”

New thinking from Perth Innovation ON TUESDAY 3RD May, Perth Innovation launched a digitised version of the “thinking tools” they use with clients in problem solving. The web application uses a gardening analogy with tools for preparing the ground (studying the problem), planting the seeds (generating ideas), thinning out the seedlings (idea selection), growing the plants (idea building) and harvesting the product (concept implementation). The Concept Garden application www.conceptgarden.net can be trialled by anyone in guest mode, but registration, which is free, allows the user to create a project and link the tools to go from identifying the problem to having a concept for the solution. For each tool there is an explanation of the background to the tool with a detailed “how-to” section. However, if you need more information email info@conceptgarden.net The tools have been in use for 20 years but this is the first integrated digital version. Perth Innovation led in the design of the application and the implementation was done by another DACC member, Zudu, who will also be responsible for the platform’s maintenance. Billy Grierson, owner of Perth Innovation commented: “Zudu have been a great partner on this project. Their agile methodology has been invaluable for developing this application and you can see the results in the amazing websites and apps they produce.” Perth Innovation also offers training in problem solving tools and techniques (including those in the Concept Garden) as well as consultancy on innovation issues in general. NEWS Charlotte Fleming.

New venture for GreatCopy CHARLOTTE FLEMING OF GreatCopy is starting an online mentoring group for writers. It’s designed for people who need to write for business but lack confidence in their writing abilities, struggle to find ideas to keep their content fresh, or simply want a forum of like-minded people to bounce ideas off. She got the idea after running a workshop as part of the DACC Training Academy. Charlotte says: “There’s obviously a need for training and support in this field now that content marketing has become such an important part of most businesses’ marketing strategy. Many people get landed with the job with little or no experience of writing for business. The Training Academy session was fully booked and very lively. The biggest challenge most people had was finding ideas to keep blogs and Facebook posts fresh so the mentoring group spends a lot of time on that.” Charlotte started GreatCopy in 2008. She has a blog on her website greatcopy.info and is a regular guest blogger on a variety of other sites. Key Talent Partners launches an exciting new leadership group ON THURSDAY 5TH May, John MacMillan from MacRoberts kindly hosted the first of a series of six monthly sessions at their offices on the Waterfront. Eight business leaders met for the first one. Business leaders agreed to get together so they can share experiences and learn and challenge each other about issues that are specific to them. The group has signed up to a confidential forum that is facilitated by Eleanor and Janice, and enables those present to tap into the knowledge of their colleagues. Often when the business is doing okay, people aren’t motivated to change, but if they don’t keep adapting and evolving their business, it can quickly stagnate and get left behind. The Leadership Group is keen to share new ways of thinking and approaches that can help transform a business. During the three-hour sessions there’s time to meet and get to know new people, have a bite of breakfast, followed by an interactive session that stimulates thinking and helps members generate new ideas for them to implement when they go back to their business. Eleanor and Janice are passionate about supporting Tayside and Angus businesses to grow from good to great and are pleased by the response they’ve had to this first group. They hope this will be the first of many groups that recognises the value in coming together to stretch thinking and use the talents of others to help business leaders adopt high-performance practices that will impact on their growth. If you’re interested in joining a future group, please contact Eleanor or Janice. Phone Key Talent Partners on 01828 632 199. www.KeyTalent-Partners.com

Supporting blind and partially-sighted people into employment ONLY 27 PERCENT of blind and partially-sighted people of working age are in employment compared to 33 percent in 2006. It’s a common misperception amongst employers that people with sight loss can’t sustain real careers in the mainstream workplace. According to a Department for Work and Pensions survey of employers, 93 percent believed it was either “difficult” or “impossible” to employ someone with impaired vision. RNIB Scotland delivers employment services including Welfare to Work Programmes and Employment Hubs throughout Scotland. The Employment Service supports employers and customers to achieve sustainable employment. RNIB Scotland has worked with a number of employers that have used Scotland’s Employer Recruitment Incentive (SERI) to employ blind and partially-sighted people. SERI runs until 31 January 2017. It targets support at unemployed young people aged 16 to 29 with the greatest barriers to employment, to enable them gain and remain in sustainable employment. SERI offers employers up to £4,000 when an organisation commits to a new job. The funding is available as a contribution towards the additional costs of recruiting and sustaining a young person during their first 52 weeks of employment. A package of additional in-work support, funded by the Scottish Government, tailored to the needs of the individual and delivered by an extended Open Doors Consortium (third sector specialists) is available to the young people participating in SERI. If you would like to hear more about this initiative contact Nigel Townley on 0131 657 8200.

Listening Post in the Overgate IN COLLABORATION WITH the NHS and Dundee City Council, Chamber member Work Place Chaplaincy Scotland (WPCS) held a ‘Listening Post’ in Dundee’s Overgate Centre in April. The City Council’s Suicide Prevention Coordinator Carla Assenti and Carol Cowan and Deborah Gray of national mental health telephone service Breathing Space were also on hand to listen and support. During the two-day initiative, many people shared concerns and commented that it felt good to talk to someone who would truly listen, non-judgmentally. WPCS Dundee team leader Geoff Findlay said: “As chaplains we are trained to listen, actively, to what people are telling us. Often they just need to get something off their chest. We will not divulge anything that is said to us to anyone – unless an individual says

they are about to harm themselves or someone else. It is about being there with people, signposting them if necessary to specialist advice such as bereavement or debt counselling and showing them that they have value and someone cares.” This year is Scotland’s Year of Listening (YoL), an initiative promoted by Breathing Space and mental health telephone service, Living Life, together with a number of other organisations across Scotland. WPCS chaplains are not NHS chaplains, but Dundee City Council is among some 2000 workplaces across Scotland from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to shopping malls and transport hubs to which WPCS provides chaplaincy services. DUNDEE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

D

undee City Council’s economic development team has been putting in a considerable amount of time and effort recently into getting people in (and out!) of the area. With tourism high on the council’s agenda as one of the key wealth generating sectors in coming years, it is vital that both leisure and business visitors can get easy access to and from the city and its surrounding area with ease, no matter what way they choose to do that. Anyone who has taken a train from Dundee Railway Station recently will know that building work on the new concourse and its associated hotel development is cracking on. Within the past couple of weeks contractors Balfour Beatty have reported that they are making good progress in constructing the foundations for the new railway station development. They add: “Substantial piling works were successfully completed in April and thanks to the recent kind weather, commuters and residents can already see changes taking shape above ground. “Work is well underway constructing the abutments for the bridge over the railway, which will support the new station concourse and connections to the existing platforms below.” Things are still on track for completion early in 2018.

Seeing the aircraft coming in to land here knowing that it was the first scheduled flight to come to our city direct from a European destination sent a tingle up my spine

Meanwhile it can’t have escaped your attention that Dundee Airport is a hive of activity, particularly with the launch of the Dundee-Amsterdam route by operators FlyBe. Monday May 23 saw the Lord Provost and other dignitaries on the tarmac to greet the first plane in from Schipol. Among the representatives of the business community on hand to welcome the inaugural flight were Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce members Insights Learning and Development Ltd and Mackays Ltd. Lord Provost Bob Duncan summed up the feelings of the whole city in his welcoming speech when he told the gathering: “Seeing the aircraft coming in to land here knowing that it was the first scheduled flight to come to our city direct from a European destination sent a tingle up my spine.” The connection between us and one of the largest hub airports in Europe will act as a gateway for leisure and business visitors to come to Dundee, with the associated opportunities that generates for trade. It will of course give commercial operations in our area, as well as tourists, a way of getting to the heart of the continent quickly and conveniently. From Schipol it’s a short hop to the centre of Amsterdam or an easy connection to almost any country in the world. With the recent focus on transport links everything is moving in the right direction!

AL-Maktoum College looking for business placements for students

T

The College, with assistance from Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce, hopes accountancy, banking, finance, insurance and legal services’ businesses will take students from the programme, which was formalised in partnership with the Scottish Qualifications’ Authority (SQA). The programme, currently recruiting and now in its third year, was established in the aftermath of the financial crisis as there is an increasing need among scholars of economics and those working in the field to identify and understand what

If Dundee businesses’ initial responses prove encouraging then the College would look at ways of setting up a formal placement scheme between it and interested industries. “Placement opportunities would certainly provide a great opportunity for our students to consolidate their learning and gain real, hands-on experience,” said Dr Hossein Godazgar, Principal and Vice Chancellor at Al-Maktoum College. “We have put forward the idea for placements so we are now hoping for positive feedback. This programme is just one of those we offer that fits well into our ethos and commitment to teaching and research, and we aim to develop these programmes further.”

ANGUS ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

SCOTTISH RURAL PARLIAMENT

Scottish Rural Parliament brings business gains for Angus

B

rechin has been chosen to host the 2016 Scottish Rural Parliament, beating off competition from 18 other areas of Scotland. The Rural Parliament will run from 6 to 8 October this year and brings with it not only the potential to showcase Angus to a global audience, but also opportunities for local businesses. The official launch was on Friday 5 February, which marked the start of a programme of regional events and consultation across Scotland, which will engage thousands of people in identifying the agenda for this national event in October. With an expected 400 delegates attending this flagship event at the new state of the art Brechin Community Campus, there are opportunities for accommodation and tourism businesses and food & drink suppliers across the area, as well as rural businesses from all sectors willing to host tours or present at the event. This is a unique opportunity for businesses in the region to get involved and share their business story and success with a national audience. Alison Smith, Service Manager of Economic Development, Angus Council explained, “Major events bring with them commercial gain and businesses need to be ready to capitalise. We are keen to speak to businesses about how they can get

involved, whether it is providing a service, hosting a visit, having a stand at the event or offering sponsorship.” A ‘Rural Parliament’ is an event which takes place every two years. It is not a formal part of government, nor is it a parliament in the sense of a legislative or decision-making body, but by bringing people together from across rural Scotland there is a unique opportunity for them to get involved and speak collectively to decision makers. This gives a stronger voice in improving policy, influencing major decisions and agreeing actions which affect Scotland’s rural communities. At the moment rural affairs tend to be dealt with according to the geographic area, or the public policy area they seem best to fit with. Bringing these geographic and policy areas together creates an opportunity to have a fresh look at how creative solutions can be developed to meet the challenges that are common across rural Scotland. Rural Parliaments have been successful in other parts of Europe and there is now a European Rural Parliament which the Scottish Rural Parliament will be able to work with, giving rural Scotland a stronger voice at a European level too. For more information on the 2016 Rural Parliament and a programme of related events visit www.scottishruralparliament.org.uk.

he Volvo V40 was an absolute joy to drive – a really great city car which was economical, a responsive drive and very smooth at the same time. It went out to Carnoustie to a meeting of local businesses, the Dundee & Angus Tourism Conference, and finished the week with a trip to the unveiling of the Oor Wullie designs at the Apex Hotel – an extremely stylish and delightful car which would suit virtually everyone’s needs. The other car driven as part of the test drive was the Mazda 6 Tourer Diesel. D & A COLLEGE

Responding D to business

&A College Principal Grant Ritchie, has pledged to support local companies with his ‘Principal Backs Business’ campaign designed to meet the recruitment and workforce development needs of employers. College staff engage with business to ensure courses are aligned to the skills and knowledge demanded by industry. They have also responded to the demands of organisations keen to find out what D&A can offer.

The college’s services to business were recently reviewed by Rocket Science who sought independent feedback from local employers. Topics covered included: fitness for purpose, fee competitiveness, quality, responsiveness and level of awareness of the services offered. The experience of businesses which have used the college was predominantly positive, with 94% saying D&A was able to meet at least some needs closely, and 60% rating the quality as high or very high, 88% rated the college’s fee competitiveness/value for money alongside or better than private providers.

The research showed that potential customers wanted to know more about D&A services to business, prompting the launch of a business e-newsletter and increasing the number of business meetings involving the college Customer Engagement team; thus ensuring businesses are aware of the support college can offer. Meanwhile at the so-called ‘chalk-face’, D&A College has instilled an unrivalled spirit of entrepreneurship among students. So much so that the recent ‘Teen Market’ held in City Square saw several stalls organised by college students. Among those were patisserie students offering chocolates and macaroons, and professional cookery students selling pulled pork burgers and pulled lamb rolls or pre-prepared soup bags. Also on offer were gifts, textile art and accessories by art students while entrepreneur Kim Rawe, who operates her own business, Purple Bird, based at Enterprise D&A at the Gardyne Campus, also took a stall. “Students learn a lot from taking part in an initiative of this sort, gaining real, hands-on, entrepreneurial experience,” said Grant. On campus, D&A continues to support employers’ workforce development: renowned ice-cream parlour Jannettas, of St Andrews, had eight staff attending bespoke training with the hospitality, retail and tourism team at the Kingsway Campus recently.

Students learn a lot from taking part in an initiative of this sort, gaining real, hands-on, entrepreneurial experience

Coming to college in the evenings, the Jannetta’s staff took part in two specially-tailored courses which examined the latest technologies and methods to enhance and advance product range, including semi-frozen desserts such as ice-cream gateaux, meringues and lollipops. Patisserie and cake-making skills were also on the curriculum. By contrast, site safety was on the menu for students attending the Construction Academy funded by JobCentre Plus and aimed at people who had not worked for some time. Successful applicants were chosen based on their experience in the building trade or skills they had gained previously that could be applied in the construction industry. Running over three weeks the construction academy delivered training in a number of areas arming those taking part with new skills including: IOSH working safely linked to CSCS card (construction site safety certificate) without which people don’t get on a building site; first aid at work; safe moving and handling; abrasive wheels training.

The Renu Academy, at the Dudhope Street clinic, has been purpose-built to provide state of the art facilities and training for those new to facial aesthetics or experienced practitioners who want to learn about new treatments and technology. Trainers Kristeen Geddes RGN NIP BA BSc and Dr Aisling Hanly BDS have a combined 15 years of advanced facial aesthetic training and both have won awards for their clinics. Recognised with the industry as top injectors they are excited to pass on their skills. “With the knowledge and experience myself and Aisling have collected over the years, we are very keen to pass that on to others in the industry,” Kristeen explained. “And in that time we have both seen that there is a lack of support once people complete the training course or gain a new qualification. “When we started talking about creating the academy 18 months ago, we decided that we wanted to devise programmes that would allow ongoing mentorship and support for those new to facial aesthetics.” Open to doctors, dentists, registered nurses and surgeons, Renu will offer basic and advanced facial aesthetic workshops in line with new industry guidelines.

“The cosmetics industry has grown so much and it is always changing so anyone working in the field will need to keep up with what is new in technique and technology.” And there will be one and three-day first aid courses, as well as workshops in CPR, dealing with anaphylaxis, oxygen therapy and paediatric first aid, which will be open to the public as well as aesthetic and cosmetic professionals. “We found that many people doing the aesthetic courses weren’t trained in what to do in a case of anaphylaxis, so we made that part of the academy’s training plan. But we realised that these types of courses would appeal to the public, so we have made them open to all.” All of the courses run at the Renu Academy are fully insured and put patient safety and teaching a professional approach to aesthetics in a flexible way that will connect with students. Renu now encompasses three brands – Renu Academy, Renu Surgical and Renu Skin Health – all of which retain the high quality of product and service clients have come to expect at the clinic. MacRoberts LLP Dundee Office triples in size with regeneration of city

eading independent commercial law firm MacRoberts LLP opened its third office in Dundee in 2013. Since then, it has tripled in size and is now home to nine lawyers working in employment, real estate, intellectual property and technology, and corporate law. Helmed by MacRoberts’ Managing Partner, John Macmillan, the Dundee team has already been involved in corporate transactions worth over £15 million. As a result, the firm has boosted its workforce, with six additional lawyers joining the original team of three: Employment Partner John Macmillan, Real Estate Partner David Milne and Real Estate Associate Kyle Moir. The new members of the team consist of Employment specialist Deborah Miller who joined as Partner in May 2015 along with real estate Senior Solicitors Lisa MacRae and Dawn MacPherson, and Paralegal Fiona Melville. The arrival of Senior Solicitor Gavin Thomson in 2015 has expanded MacRoberts’ intellectual property and technology team in Dundee. Dundee has invested £1 billion in the regeneration of the city’s waterfront and the success of MacRoberts has allowed the team to upgrade its offices to be part of this redevelopment. MacRoberts now leases over 2500 sq ft of urban commercial real estate in the River Court development and boasts two state-of-the-art conference rooms with beautiful views over the Tay. John Macmillan said, “We took the opportunity to place a team in Dundee at the optimum time. The team has already had significant successes and tripling our staff count within three years has been fabulous. As somebody who calls Dundee home, it is particularly special for me to be able to contribute to the economic and physical regeneration of the city in this way.” MacRoberts LLP has been at the heart of the Scottish legal sector for over 150 years. As a commercial law firm, it has remained independent and is based solely in Scotland, yet has strong links with the wider UK and international markets. The firm has offices in Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow, allowing its 48 partners and over 200 employees to reach clients throughout the country. MacRoberts works in all key industries within the Scottish economy, ranging from the traditional sectors of banking, construction, and government, through to growth industries such as renewable energy, food and drink, media and technology.

What now for

Tayside

businesses? The first Business Round Table Discussion lunch raises important issues for the local economy Sponsored by MacRoberts LLP

DUNDEE & ANGUS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Tayside businesses take part in the first Business Round Table Discussion.

O

n Friday 13th May, MacRoberts LLP kindly hosted the first Business Round Table Discussion lunch at their offices on the Waterfront. The purpose was to have a lively, productive discussion on the future for Tayside businesses following the Scottish election result, the manifestos and promises, and the cabinet announcements. Chamber CEO Alison Henderson chaired the event which was attended by 15 people representing several organisations including the Bank of Scotland, GS Insurance, Dundee City Council, Hillcrest Housing Group, MAJR Group, the University of Dundee, MacRoberts LLP and Henderson Loggie. Charandeep Singh, Head of Marketing, Communication & Partnerships at the Scottish Chamber of Commerce, was also present. The main topics for discussion concerned: • Business needs and wants • Opportunities for our local area • The key sectors and support attendees feel would really make a difference to the region • The challenges we should be considering and addressing to promote the best environment for business prosperity and growth at a local and national level. Alison Henderson opened the meeting by welcoming the attendees and started the forum by asking what would play a major role in the support of SMEs. Gordon Rate, Bank of Scotland Treasury & Head of Scotland, SME and corporate financial markets, was strongly of the opinion that banking would be a significant factor. Dougy Agnew, from Henderson Loggie, raised the topic of the Scottish Living Wage. Dundee as a city is a supporter of the Living Wage. However, it was agreed around the table that certain industries could be crippled, with the hospitality and care sectors particularly concerned about cost implications. Richard Meiklejohn, CEO of MAJR Group, felt there’s a definite lack of young people considering going into business for themselves. Alison Henderson underlined the importance of growing employment in the city and the need to look at areas of opportunity. The group was united in thinking there are certainly prospects in life sciences, creative and digital, tourism and hospitality and also energy. Some of these opportunities involve skilled labour but that’s not the case across all sectors.

The group were united in thinking there are certainly prospects in life sciences, creative and digital, tourism and hospitality and also energy

Everyone agreed that a change of mindset in the UK towards certain types of employment, such as hospitality, which is often not considered as a long-term career option, on the same level as other sectors, is needed. This attitude is not a global opinion as hospitality is looked on in a different way in the States and in Europe. Without doubt, hospitality can be a very fulfilling career.

Another important area of discussion centred on productivity, which is low. There was agreement that the Scottish Government should align itself with key sectors, and tax incentives would be one way to do this. The tax arena is very much up for debate. People in Scotland could be earning less than their counterparts south of the border due to the difference in tax rates. In two years, Northern Ireland will align with Southern Ireland. Could this lead the way for what happens in Scotland and England?

DUNDEE & ANGUS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

An identified area for improvement concerns the shopping experience. Creating a culture of local shopping would make a significant difference. A major challenge is how do we attract shoppers back to the high street? Parking charges are relevant. Parking at outlets is free, whereas in the city centre it can be expensive. The group agreed we need to learn from other cities’ successes. For instance, it was felt replicating Union Square in Aberdeen would be a good idea. We also need to spread the word to potential inward investors that the Dundee area, which also includes north Fife and Monifieth, has opportunities for business. The wider population, who can easily access and visit Dundee, must be looked on as a whole. For example, it took years to bring Frankie and Benny’s to Dundee. We need to sell the city. The V&A Museum of Design is a life changer for Dundee, but it’s important that most people across Scotland are made aware of what’s happening. The discussion moved on to travel. Many rail offers start at Edinburgh. They need to start further north in Dundee. The airport is fundamental to Dundee’s future, but investment is needed for development and increased used, so there is a wider offering than is there at the moment. The aim of the Amsterdam flight must also be to bring people into Dundee to enjoy the experience and spend money contributing to the local economy rather than people going out of the city. Flight times also need to be looked at. There’s a definite need for earlier flights, particularly for business people who need to attend meetings first thing in the morning in London. The feeling from everyone was there’s sometimes a lack of awareness of events happening across the city. This year, the Tay Road Bridge celebrates its 50th anniversary. If it was another city there would be major plans. The city is missing a trick not promoting this. The Dundee Design event was not very widely known about amongst some round the table, or amongst their teams. The group felt the use of big billboards along the Kingsway route would work well in making people aware of what’s happening. Dundee ‘circles’ could also be used for promotional purposes. The discussion moved on to education and the potential for students and businesses to work together. Social media is moving

The group pictured before their lunch discussion.

We need to spread the word to potential inward investors that the Dundee area, which also includes north Fife and Monifieth, has opportunities for business

rapidly and it can be difficult to keep up. There are opportunities for students to help businesses with this. However, as social media can be positive and negative, there needs to be a lot of understanding on both sides. Potentially, there could be major mismatch between the client and the student. It’s important to understand the aims and ethos of the relevant company and it goes without saying that website security is vital. Exporting was also raised. Scotland has a good track record in certain areas but the group felt it could be increased. It was felt that simplification of regulation would help in a major way, particularly with the salmon industry. Building relationships is vital to introduce Scottish businesses. People get excited about Scotland – the country is a good brand! Students are important for promoting Scotland. A significant 147 different countries are represented in the University of Dundee student body and international students bring different mindsets and skills. It was felt the government could do more to support this. Before bringing the discussion to a close, Alison invited the attendees to give key phrases which reflect the city. Key phrases about Dundee: Growing, innovating, ideally positioned geographically, an exciting place to be, history, entrepreneurial, exciting with great potential, new voices and new talent, partnerships, great people. All very positive comments and an excellent end to the first Round Table Discussion!

Look at all options for business succession

W

ho is going to run your business when it’s time for you to step back? If you don’t have family who are willing and able to take over, will there be a buyer for your business? If there is, will they care as much as you do about the business you have created, the place you have grown it and the people it employs? These are the types of question that will appear on the horizon of all business owners eventually. For those who want to leave a legacy of a successful, sustainable business, it’s never too early to start thinking about how these questions might be answered. If continued family ownership is not possible or attractive, a trade sale or management buy-out (MBO) often provides the answer. However, MBOs are less common since the credit crunch, with finance more difficult and confidence lower. A sale to a competitor or market consolidator can help take your business to the next stage in its growth and

achieve the best price. But for many owners, price is not everything. They worry about the future for their business and employees if ownership moves out of the area or even overseas. While employee ownership has been around for decades, it is an alternative model that is gaining more traction than ever before. Research shows that employee-owned businesses are typically more productive than others, and more likely to remain and invest in their local economy. With planning and good execution, a transition to employee ownership can provide an excellent answer to

succession questions, and an attractive price on exit. It is also flexible: introducing an element of employee ownership can provide benefits without ruling out other future exit strategies. Both the UK and Scottish governments want to encourage employee ownership. A sale to a qualifying employee ownership trust is exempt from all capital gains tax. Co-operative Development Scotland (part of Scottish Enterprise) provides support for feasibility studies and help with costs. The most important thing to bear in mind is that a growing number of businesses across the country and of all shapes and sizes have successfully made the transition to employee ownership. If you are thinking about succession, speak to an advisor who has experience of all of the options, including employee ownership, or contact Co-operative Development Scotland.

Prepare yourself for the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) What is GDPR?

A

fter four years of debate, 14th April 2016 marked the passing of the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) by the European Parliament. This heralds the most significant reform of data protection laws in Europe for over 15 years and will have a significant impact on all businesses and individuals alike. Being broadly more beneficial to consumers, there are significant changes for businesses to address and organisations will have to revisit their (or adopt new) data protection policies and procedures to ensure they meet the requirements of the new legislation. A patchwork of data protection rules will be replaced with a single set of rules for use throughout Europe and will make organisations accountable to one unified supervisory authority, avoiding the complications cross-border organisations face dealing with different rules and regulators. For consumers it should ultimately mean better control of their personal data thus reinforcing consumer trust.

How could GDPR impact your business? • Single set of rules which will make it simpler and cheaper for companies to do business in the EU • New obligations for Data Processors • Affirmative consent requirements for processing personal data – if you collect personal data this will apply to your business • Enhanced rights of data subjects • In some cases, an obligation on businesses to appoint a Data Protection Officer independently to ensure compliance with the GDPR • Companies based outside the EU will have to play by the same rules as EU companies when offering service within the EU • Adoption of “Privacy by Design • Companies that fail to comply with their obligations under the GDPR can face fines of up to 4% of global sales, with data controllers and processors being jointly and severally liable for any breach Whilst there are a number of benefits to smaller businesses, all businesses will have to make changes to accommodate the new rules. You have time to consider and implement the changes required to best suit your business requirements, don’t leave making those changes to the last minute.

MacRoberts’ team of data protection specialists can provide expertise and advice to businesses wishing to adopt this proactive approach to compliance preparation. For further information, please contact Gavin Thomson gavin.thomson@macroberts.com Tel: 01382 339 340

usinesses always appreciate a stable environment in which to make decisions and plan for the future. However, in recent years there has been little chance of predictability when it comes to Scotland’s, or indeed the UK’s, political landscape: two referendums – on Scottish independence and on the UK’s EU membership; a UK General Election that was unpredictable right up until the results were announced; and, most recently, a Scottish Parliamentary election whose results have challenged long-held Scottish political norms. Now, at last, there is an opportunity for a relatively stable political environment, at least until the 2020 UK General Election. That is good news for future planning and it is also an opportunity for our politicians to get their focus away from fighting elections and referendums and back onto putting business first and growing our economy. The need is urgent – Scotland’s economy grew at a fraction of the pace of the UK economy for the last three quarters of 2015, including one quarter of contraction which put us within a hair’s breadth of recession. It is easy to place this downturn at the door of the problems being experienced by the oil and gas industry, and the east of Scotland needs no convincing of the effects that the global downturn in oil and gas prices has had over the past 18 months, but the fact is that there are underlying issues affecting our economy that have not been resolved since the time of the 2008-09 recession.

Interest rates have been anchored by the Bank of England at 0.5% now for seven years and the recent pressure has been to cut this further rather than raise it. Quantitative Easing still stands at £375 billion – a colossal amount spent on bolstering liquidity in the credit markets, which has not been rolled back since the recession officially ended. In addition, productivity remains a huge problem in the UK – the productivity gap between the UK and comparative economies such as Germany, France, the Netherlands and Belgium ranges between 23 and 32 percent. These are all major systemic issues and it is not possible to solve them overnight, but they are a stark warning that our economy needs to become a far higher priority for our Governments in Scotland and the UK than it currently appears to be. Scotland’s businesses are resilient and full of potential. With the right support, they can deliver the levels of success that will get our economy moving again. That is why Chambers of Commerce have produced a clear set of priorities for our Governments, based on the capabilities of the private sector to deliver effective business support, the need for Government to reduce unfair business taxes such as business rates and to invest in the talent and connectivity that business need to succeed. The job to be done is significant but with a determination to focus on growing our businesses and the right balance of partnership between our public and private sectors, we have the opportunity to build towards healthy growth.

Kathryn Baker and her business partners Ian Baker and Jamie Simpson may only have launched their new venture a few months ago, but already the Angus business has attracted a host of customers looking to sample their unique aromatic coffee. With support from Business Gateway, the trio launched Sacred Grounds Coffee Company (www.sacredgroundscoffeecompany.co.uk) in December, with the aim of supplying domestic and wholesale clients

“It has been a long journey to get the business to where it is today, but we have had great support along the way. Our Business Gateway adviser, Donna Williamson, has been fantastic and helped us get our business plan into shape. Having a professional adviser to keep you right is so reassuring, particularly at the start-up phase when so many things are unknown. “Business Gateway’s free workshops were also really helpful and gave me a good grounding in a number of important business skills.” To find out how Business Gateway can help you, visit www.bgateway.com/angus or www.bgateway.com/dundee or contact your local office on 01382 843 016 (Angus) or 01382 843 082 (Dundee).

Changes to Property taxes for Residential Landlords

T

here are several changes to taxation of residential property which affects individuals and partnerships. A brief summary of the changes that are in place and in the pipeline are below. From 6 April 2016 Additional rate for Stamp Duty adds 3% when you buy a 2nd property, abolition of Wear and Tear allowance and the new renewals basis is introduced. From 6 April 2017 By 2020/21, interest will only have tax deduction at the basic rate of tax – phased in from 2017/18 to soften the blow (see example right) From 6 April 2019 Faster payment of Capital Gains Tax – 30 days from date of disposal. To the right are a couple of examples highlighting the tax effect of restriction of interest relief. If you are a residential property landlord and have related mortgages, you need to understand how this will affect your tax. There are planning opportunities to help mitigate the tax issues but forearmed is forewarned. Talk to your professional advisor now to ensure you know where you stand moving forward.

DATES

FOR YOUR

DIARY

DACC Golf Day THIS YEAR THE Chamber Golf Tournament will take place on the medal course at Monifieth (established in 1858) on Thursday 18 August. We are hoping for a great turn out with many teams already signed up to play. We are grateful to Bob Ward from WRB Gas who has kindly agreed to sponsor the day. The outing will start in the clubhouse with soup and a sandwich before the friendly competition starts at 1pm. We will have a shotgun start and a refreshment buggy will make its way around the course to keep the players energy levels up and we hope to have a photographer taking shots of all the action.

All players are due to finish at 5.30pm when they can relax in the clubhouse with a drink and a lovely dinner, followed by the trophy presentation for the winners and runners-up. We’re looking to add in some friendly fun competitions to the day too, so don’t delay…get in touch with us to book your fourball and take part in what is a key event in the Chamber calendar. There will be opportunities for hole sponsorship, too. We’d be delighted to talk to you about getting your business profiled in front of the golfers on the day!

George R Donald Schools Enterprise Challenge THE GEORGE DONALD Fund is the Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce’s youth enterprise charity, and in conjunction with Abertay University, organised the first enterprise challenge event in 2015, involving Dundee secondary schools. This was a big success and was very positively evaluated by the pupils, teachers and business sponsors who participated. The 2015 Challenge was ably won by the impressive team from St Paul’s RC Academy (sponsored by Thorntons Law) who collected a smart glass trophy for their school, as well as prizes of individual tablets generously donated by Shackleton Technologies. Sandra Burke, a trustee of the charity and former CEO of the Chamber, has been instrumental in resurrecting this schools challenge and giving a focus to the charity to take it forward. Due to the success of 2015, the Enterprise Challenge is back for 2016 and will take place on 9th November at the Michelin Athletic Club. This year the Challenge will be bigger and better with not only pupils from Dundee Secondary schools but Angus too! The challenge will see Dundee & Angus pupils paired with top business minds to tackle a business scenario. The challenge tasks pupils to brainstorm, design and present their ideas. Thank you to all of our 2015 sponsors: Tokheim Ltd, ZUDU, MacRoberts, Henderson Loggie, My Pinkie Promise, RSB Lindsays, Bank of Scotland, MMG Archbold, MAJR Group, Thorntons, Michellin, Shackleton Technologies and Dundee City Council.

FRASER DOHERTY, MBE, FOUNDER OF SUPERJAM “My story shows that what can start as a passion, with love and hard work, can grow into something amazing. Something that changes your life.” Fraser Doherty. Fraser Doherty started his incredible business career at the age of just fourteen. After being taught how to make jam in his grandmother’s kitchen in Scotland, he came up with a way of making jam 100% from fruit. At sixteen, he presented his brand, SuperJam, to Waitrose and went on to become the youngest ever supplier to a major supermarket. SuperJam has since grown into a company that has sold many millions of jars through thousands of supermarkets around the world. As well as being a commercial success, the business has invested in successful charitable projects – running hundreds of free tea parties for the elderly in Europe, Korea and Australia and setting up community beehives in the UK and Korea. Fraser has been commended by the Prime Minister at Downing Street, by HRH Prince Charles and was recently awarded a medal (MBE) “for services to business” by The Queen.

LORD ANDREW DUNLOP, PARLIAMENTARY UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE FOR SCOTLAND Andrew Dunlop was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Scotland Office on 14 May 2015. Andrew earned BA and MA degrees in Political Science and Government from Edinburgh University. In 2012 Andrew became the Prime Minister’s principal adviser within Downing Street on devolved constitutional issues. Earlier in his career he was the head of policy and research for the Scottish Conservative Party, special adviser to the Defence Secretary and a member of the Downing Street Policy Unit.
