n economic and business terms, 2015 promises opportunities of many different kinds for Dundee and Angus. While we continue to operate our businesses in a global market that is volatile, buffeted by economic and political balance shifts, we see local business growth that benefits from historically low inflation and interest rates. The cost of doing business is reducing in real terms and the consumer is regaining confidence with more affordable prices. True, the lack of major wage increases still weigh on consumer sentiment, but this is expected to change as the impact of 35% fuel reductions reach the basket during the coming quarter.

“

With record levels of employment, we have every reason to hope that businesses will be more confident this year

With record levels of employment, we have every reason to hope that businesses will be more confident this year and the local market place will be a good one in which to do business. The local economy is set for growth and with the V&A beginning on site in Q2 in the heart of Dundee, we will provide a massive opportunity for local

businesses to benefit from this project. The Chamber is actively working with the Council to ensure that local businesses benefit directly and indirectly from the award of the build contract which will see 3 years of building on site. With an increasingly healthy prevailing economy, the business community still faces the uncertainty of a May UK General Election that polls suggest will lead to a coalition government again. With so much to play for in the election, we can expect politicians of all hues and shades to seek our views and support to promote their agendas. As we did during the fiercely fought Independence Referendum, the Chamber will remain neutral but seek to give members opportunities to meet these politicians and to hold them to account, interrogating their business and economic policies to ensure that our voices are heard. Issues such as business rates, town centre regeneration, employment and skills combined with delays to the renewable energy dividend and the collapse of oil prices impacting the Scottish oil and gas sector should all provide ample scope for challenging our would-be policy makers and legislators! Your Chamber has a full programme of normal events, but you can expect more public meetings and joint events that will see members able to enjoy that hearty political discourse that captivated us last year and provide them the opportunity to have their voices heard while the politicians are listening.

Tim Allan, President CEO, Unicorn Property Group

Personal Impact in Business IN THE FIRST 40 seconds you enter a room, how you walk, your eye contact, your use of space, handshake and your tone of voice will all have a huge impact. What impression do you want to make on people? As part of Chamber Training Academy 2014, Eleanor Yearwood of Key Talent Partners delivered the session, “Personal Impact in Business”. During the workshop attendees had the opportunity to explore the impression they wanted to make and to get helpful suggestions on how to improve their personal impact.

The workshop helped attendees learn how to build rapport and influence their audience. The group enjoyed a very interactive session exploring body language during networking, how we appear when approaching someone during a business interaction and taking the time to consider how they would like to be perceived. #dundee #daccevents

ARBIKIE, Scotland’s newest farm-to-bottle distillery has started operation with the launch of a super-premium vodka. Unlike the majority of vodka, which is made with wheat, the Arbikie brand is made from potatoes, giving it a distinctive flavour and providing a slightly sweet, very creamy and exceptionally smooth taste. The distillery is reviving the traditions of an industry which took place on the site back in the 18th century. Aimed at the discerning vodka drinker, the potato vodka is created using Scottish water and a blend of Maris Piper, King Edwards and Cultra potatoes. It has the added advantage of being gluten free.

DUNDEE is to become home to one of the largest independent accountancy firms in Scotland with the merger of two practices. From April 1, Dundee-based EQ Accountants LLP, who recently celebrated their 10th anniversary, will join forces with Carters who are based in Glenrothes. The newly-merged firm will employ over 100 staff, including 16 Partners. With plans to grow further and recruit into a range of positions within the months ahead, the merger will increase EQ’s turnover from £4 million to £6million.

City of Design status is great news for Dundee

A MAJOR 10-DAY Scottish design festival at the V&A featuring local and international talent will be a highlight of Dundee’s Unesco City of Design status. The City of Design title is given to cities with a “rich cultural landscape” that gives designers and planners opportunities to take advantage of local materials and conditions. Developments in medicine and biomedical research in Dundee helped gain the award, as did cultural creations such as The Beano and The Dandy, and worldwide gaming success Grand Theft Auto. The cultural title is also expected to kick start the first cataloguing of Dundee’s estimated 250 pieces of public art which will include information on who made each piece, who funded it and the history behind it. As well as the Scottish Design Festival, which is likely to be held in 2017, a series of high-profile lectures

Managing Director Steve Scott, who collected the award from TV Presenter, Kaye Adams said, “Back to back Solar awards is a fantastic achievement and recognises our commitment to excellence and innovation in combining our roofing and solar PV services with the latest integrated PV products.” Covering one in five of all new homes in Scotland, the company has a proven track record built on 25 years

from international designers is also being planned. Anna Day, one of the authors of Dundee’s bid, said, “Although these are what we’re calling short-term projects that are in place over the next five years, this is a designation forever and we want to build on that. “We’re seeking to develop the Scottish Design Festival at V&A Dundee which will showcase and promote contemporary designers. “Design in Action, Scotland’s national exchange hub for design, is planning a series of lectures, bringing international designers and really big names.” Ms Day said the Unesco City of Design status would also build on Dundee’s hard work to retain its graduates. “Once they had to leave the city because the opportunities weren’t there. The city has worked really hard over the last few years to turn that around.” Another project, Dundee Cloth, features fashion designer Hayley Scanlan who will create products made with jute to link the old and new.

Committed to excellence, Forster leads the way in new home and commercial solar PV delivery through its integrated service offering – from careful product specification and design to personable installation and after care. LANGSTANE WIN MAJOR AWARD FOR THE THIRD TIME LANGSTANE Press received the British Office Supplies and Stationery Dealer Award of Excellence. The award recognises Langstane’s excellence through the successful performance of their business. Colin Campbell, Managing Director said, “It’s very pleasing to receive this award for an unprecedented third year in a row. I am extremely proud of the whole team at Langstane. Receiving this award acknowledges our approach to providing excellent customer service and recognises the efforts of our team who go to extraordinary lengths to satisfy our clients throughout Scotland on a daily basis.” GROWING BUSINESS INTERNATIONALLY DACC, in conjunction with the Tayside Regional Advisory Board and partners launched the first Tayside International Conference on, “How to grow your business internationally” in November. Attendees discussed the opportunities and challenges businesses face selling overseas and heard directly from local companies who have successfully grown their businesses in new markets. A VERY SUCCESSFUL familyowned Montrose glazing business is looking at further expansion in the north east after seeing sales soar. A significant investment in new staff and machinery has paid off with full-year turnover increasing by approximately 60 percent to £2.4 million. The firm, which was established 40 years ago by current managing director Eric Irons, has its headquarters in Montrose and a trade centre in Arbroath. Eric’s son Craig, the firm’s Business Development Manager, said they have enjoyed a strong period and are looking to grow further in the coming months. Esk, which became a third generation family business when Craig’s son and nephew joined as apprentices, has grown its workforce to around 30. The company secured several large contracts after turning to Business Gateway for development advice. “We’ve found their advice extremely helpful, particularly in areas such as social media and marketing,” said Craig. “Eric started out as glazier and didn’t go to university and I’m the same. While we know our business inside out, we really appreciate the support in other areas. Our business adviser suggested we go

the House of Commons, in the Churchill Room, on November 26. He said, “I’m extremely proud to accept the Gold Standard Award 2014 on behalf of the whole team at Carbon. It is very pleasing to be recognised for all of the commitment and hard work we put in every day to deliver the best advice and service to our clients. “I was particularly pleased with the judges’ comments. It’s great that the independent panel appreciated so many of the attributes that make Carbon Financial Partners one of the best financial planning businesses in the UK. “It is a tough award to win, so it’s especially nice to have won it two

for the ISO 9000 (an industryrecognised quality management accreditation) and it’s opened a lot of doors for us in terms of procurement. “We recently completed two large secondary glazing contracts for Hillcrest Housing Association in Dundee and Edinburgh, installing within listed buildings. We also completed a 300-window replacement contract with Dundee and Angus College at the Kingsway Campus in Dundee.” Last year the company opened a bespoke glass design studio led by Duncan of Jordanston College of Art and Design graduate Emma McDermott and it’s now looking at opportunities to expand its footprint further. Craig added, “We’re growing a good reputation in the Aberdeen area and so we would like to open an office in the region at some point in the near future. While we are happy that we’re taking on larger clients, we continue to focus on customer service and add new products to our domestic installations department which is the integral part of the business.” Business Gateway adviser Mike Hamilton said, “Esk Glazing is an excellent example of a well-established business that is continuing to grow.”

holds key to property market

T

he coming year is set to be a momentous one for Dundee – more than £1billion has been invested into the regeneration of the city and the waterfront continues to transform the landscape. This is just one of the many improvements being made in Dundee, including the arrival of the Malmaison, the ongoing refurbishment of the railway station and the continued success of Ninewells hospital. Although the waterfront is not yet completed, it’s set to have a positive impact on the city and in particular its property market. Dundee and the surrounding area is now one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Scotland, with high quality transport links, a booming creative industry and two prestigious universities, all attracting students, professionals, families and singles alike. In the Dundee and Angus property market, sales continue to increase and the outlook for 2015 is extremely encouraging. Peter Ryder, Managing Director of the estate agency division of leading legal firm Thorntons, is optimistic that 2015 will be a strong year for the property sector. He said: “2014 saw the property market perform better than it had for a number of years and the early signs show that this momentum will continue for 2015.” By the end of 2014, Thorntons had sold 1,200 properties across Tayside and Fife, with 844 of those homes sitting in Dundee and Angus alone. This was an increase of 20 per cent on the previous year. Mr Ryder added: “This is an impressive figure for a year that faced huge uncertainty caused by the Independence

PETER RYDER Managing Director

Referendum. This caused problems across the Scottish property market, affecting home sales as buyers were simply not willing to commit until they knew the outcome of the vote. “However, the improvements within Dundee and the waterfront development are helping sustain the recovery of the property market as buyers flock to the area, eager to embrace the new landscape. “Last year we saw the return of closing dates and new build reservations from plan, which is always a good indicator that the market is improving and people are looking to move again. More first time buyers are coming to the market, and providing this trend continues, we should see another increase in property sales in 2015. “Recent changes in LBTT rates will generally be advantageous for the majority of our local market, with buyers in the £250,000 bracket being offered considerable savings. This will help to improve the movement of property in what is an important sector for the region. “Undoubtedly, the increase in the rates at the top end of the market will mean more buyers will pay higher charges under the new proposals but largely, properties in Tayside will see a benefit from the changes.” Peter also believes it’s not just about the movement of the market that is important, but that people receive a first class service when looking to buy or sell a property. He added: “At Thorntons, we pride ourselves in the quality of the service we offer to our customers. The knowledge in our property team is second to none, the staff understand the market and are able to advise and support those looking to buy or sell a property. The staff regularly go above and beyond to ensure buyers and sellers are confident in our ability.”

Professor of Anatomy and Forensic Anthropology, Sue is one of the UK’s leading forensic anthropologists and is Director of the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification within the University of Dundee. This event will give us an amazing insight into the work of the Centre, complete with a tour of the ‘facilities’ including the Val McDermid Mortuary and the Stuart MacBride Dissecting Room, named after two of Scotland’s top crime writers, and a collection of new submersion tanks named after the likes of Jeffery Deaver, Kathy Reichs and Harlan Coben. The unusual choice of names follows a campaign from the university to raise £1million to build a new morgue. It was backed by the crime writers who asked members of the public to vote for the writer they’d like the morgue to be named after and to donate money. McDermid came in first. The event will include our usual networking time, a talk from Professor Black in the Lecture Theatre and optional tours of the Museum, the Dissecting Room and the Mortuary with the opportunity to ‘opt’ out at any stage! Our second Training Academy series will take place in March, April and May. You’ll find further details separately in the magazine and online. Another date for your diaries is April 22 when we’ll be having our annual networking outing to Perth Races along with fellow Chambers from Fife, Perth and Aberdeen. It’s a very worthwhile day for making new contacts and reinforcing relationships. Transport to and from the races is provided courtesy of Perth Racecourse. STEPS TO ACHIEVE YOUR 2015 GOALS Set your goals for 2015? Good! Follow these 5 Steps to stay focused whatever the New Year brings …

H

ow did your 2014 goals work out? If you’re like most of us you probably got mixed results! But take a moment to reflect on everything you achieved in 2014, whether you planned it or not. I bet you did better than you think. Sometimes it’s less about the goals and more about our attitude. Your ability to stay flexible as well as focused determines your success. Follow those 5 simple steps to end 2015 with a sense of achievement.

1

SET THE RIGHT GOALS Before thinking about what your goals should be, ask yourself why you’re setting them. Whether they’re business or personal, achieving goals is the stepping stone to creating your ideal future. Think about your strengths, passions and values. Having goals that really matter (to you and your colleagues and clients) will keep you motivated when things get tough.

2

SHOUT THEM FROM THE ROOFTOPS! Sharing your goals can keep you accountable. But more importantly, it can inspire people around you to get involved. This is key if you’re setting company objectives. It’s a bit daunting sharing your grand plans – what will people think? I’m not promising there won’t be doubters, but when the people that matter see how important your goals are they’re usually supportive. It also helps you to ‘own’ your goals and step boldly into action and achieve them!

3

GET REAL Most of us overestimate the time available and underestimate how long it takes to do things. Time regular tasks in real life, with distractions, and schedule this amount of time to complete them.

18

DUNDEE & ANGUS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Try to do regular tasks at the same time each week. Routine is great for getting things done. If you find routine bores you, find ways to mix it up that still let you get things done. Or schedule fun tasks when you’ve finished a dull one!

4

STAY FLEXIBLE – YOUR PLAN IS YOUR TOOL, NOT YOUR MASTER It’s tempting to think that once you get your plan just right, it’s just a case of following it and you’ll achieve your goals. Unfortunately, life rarely works out that way and this is where most of us go off the rails. Once you’ve got a realistic idea of the time it takes for regular tasks, start scheduling your project tasks around them. Try working with a high level plan for a 90 day period. Schedule the first 30 days’ tasks into your calendar and make a weekly appointment to plan the week ahead in detail, reprioritising if necessary.

5

EYES ON THE PRIZE The biggest mistake people make in setting goals is to ‘just give it a try and see how it goes’. When things get tough, you’ll start thinking about your other options. You might not be serious about quitting, but even considering the possibilities takes your focus away from figuring out the way forward. Once you commit, 100% of your focus is on finding a way to achieve your goal and the answers begin to emerge. Usually the solutions come in ways you’d never have thought of when you still had the ‘quit’ option open in your mind. Good luck with your 2015 goals!

Could you, Should you, Wood you? How to invest in the future of our organisations and ensure we have the right talent in place

T

he Commission for Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce was established by the Scottish Government in January 2013. Chaired by Sir Ian Wood, the Commission is independent of Government and was tasked with bringing forward a range of recommendations designed to improve young people’s transition into employment. In the summer of 2014, following extensive consultations with leading figures in education, business and equalities groups, the Commission published its report. It contained 39 recommendations looking to significantly enhance Scotland’s vocational education to achieve the same acclaimed status as that enjoyed by Scotland’s higher education sector. It highlights the importance of business and industry working with schools and colleges as a key factor in ensuring young people are more prepared for employment and better informed in career choice. A number of recommendations focus on encouraging and supporting more employers to recruit more young people. What is abundantly clear from the report, and the activity that has followed its publication, is that business and industry must step up and work far more closely with schools and colleges to shape career advice, enterprise education and job search skills in schools. We must put our young people at the heart of decision-making and create the right industry environment to deliver positive destinations for our future workforce. Working in partnership, we must take responsibility to lead and drive the change in employer’s engagement with schools and colleges, and challenge and support

This is a time to effect positive change, help to influence the future workforce and leaders in your organisations and deliver a clear commitment to young people about the routes on offer to education, employment and training – and the support they can expect. Several Chamber members, who are expert and innovative in their fields, helped deliver a programme of short coaching sessions based around diverse topics, from social media marketing, sales training for the non-sales person, confidence & motivation to personal impact – all designed around individuals. Attendees ranged from sole traders, looking for training to improve the running of their business, to team members from larger organisations wanting to complement existing personal development plans. The programme for 2015 is taking shape and from March to May and September to November, DACC will work with members to extend the sessions and deliver two more blocks. To date, this has included the launch of www.businessangus.com, which provides online information about funding, available premises and local business news, the establishment of a social media presence with @businessangus on Twitter and a LinkedIn group and also the inaugural Angus Business Week, which was held last September. “We were delighted with the response from the local businesses community to the first Angus Business Week, which was organised in partnership with local organisations, including Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce,

We were delighted with the response from the local businesses community to the first Angus Business Week

said Alison Smith, head of economic development, Angus Council. “Over 600 people came along to the various events, from entrepreneurs with an idea for an exciting new venture to family businesses hoping to expand to large companies with an eye on the global market place.” As part of the support provided by Business Angus to companies across Angus, a programme of regular Business Breakfasts has been developed. The first Business Breakfast introduced Angus Council’s economic development and highlighted the services on offer, including funding, marketing and business advice. Following a high number of requests from businesses who participated in the Business Angus survey, the second Business Breakfast focused on the use of social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Alison Henderson, Chief Executive of Dundee and Angus Chamber of

Commerce, was the first speaker at this event. “Have a social media plan – and stick to it,” stressed Alison, who discussed using sites such as Twitter and Facebook as business tools. “And be focused. Don’t allow social media to use up all your time.” The 70+ delegates then discovered how three local businesses use social media. Claire Smith from Mackays in Arbroath revealed that the majority of their marketing activity is now online. “Thanks to our highly responsive consumer website and extensive use of social media, Mackays has established a good following across the globe,” said Claire. Anna Mitchell from Castleton Farm Shop & Café highlighted their Facebook page’s positive effect on business, while Forster Energy’s Grant Withers described using LinkedIn to network with potential clients and discover the best talent in the industry when recruiting. The event also included a presentation by Gill Smith,

Business Angus’ ecomms expert, about using social media tools such as Google Analytics and Facebook Insights, as well as opportunities to talk to social media training and support providers. “The next business breakfast will be on March 18 and will focus on funding, another of the subjects local businesses have told Business Angus they would like information and advice about,” added Alison Smith. To keep up to date with business information, news and events in Angus, including the next Angus Business Breakfast, companies are encouraged to visit www.businessangus.com, follow @businessangus on Twitter and sign up for the Angus Business Newsletter at www.businessangus.com/signup. This regular newsletter is emailed to subscribers every month and features information about forthcoming business events in and around Angus, funding advice, case studies and updates on new and existing local businesses.

SCOTTISH CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE

Liz Cameron

Chief Executive Scottish Chambers of Commerce

When business is successful, Scotland is successful As we begin our business in 2015, a major question confronts us. It is searching in implication and demanding of answer. This question will engage all of us in Scotland.

W

e have had a truly extraordinary year in 2014. Seldom before has Scotland so captured worldwide attention. The triumph of the Commonwealth Games showed ‘Team Scotland’ at its best. The Ryder Cup was an unqualified success. The national referendum on our future brought a breath-taking voter turn-out, one of the highest ever recorded in a modern democracy. Scotland has become a great global story. Awareness of Scotland – its successes and achievements, its products and services – has seldom been higher. So the question we face in the New Year is this: how can we build on these achievements and secure further advances for business, our economy, our society and for our quality of life? I start from a fundamental premise: that when business is successful, Scotland is successful.

28

DUNDEE & ANGUS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

That is my article of faith, but you don’t have to take my word for it. The past year has seen great advances by the business sector. Despite continuing problems from the financial crisis and problems with funding, there has been a surge in new business startups. The number of new businesses has risen to a record 30,263, a 19% increase on the 2012 figure. According to the Scottish government, more than 335,000 businesses are now active in Scotland, the highest total since records began. And the 2014 registered business stock rate per 10,000 adults is up from 362 businesses to 377 – the highest rate recorded since the start of the series in 2006. WHY DOES ALL THIS MATTER? The outstanding development of 2014 – one that took almost all forecasting

groups by surprise – has been the continuing surge in numbers employed in Scotland – and growth in private sector employment in particular. Latest figures show employment in Scotland now stands at over 2.6 million – the highest level since records began in 1992. HOW HAS THIS BEEN ACHIEVED? The news headlines have been dominated by stories of government spending cutbacks. So from where have these new jobs come? Government statistics show that over the last 12 months those employed by the public sector have decreased by 37,900. At the same time, employment in the private sector in Scotland increased by 72,900 to 2,048,500. Indeed, the proportion of Scots employed in the private sector is at its highest since records began in 1999. These figures show that Scotland’s businesses have had the resilience to cope with the deepest recession in our modern history and are continuing to succeed in the face of challenges in the economies of many of our key export markets. So: More people in work. More young people finding opportunities. More women in work. A record number of companies, a rising number of business start-ups, and strong growth in self-employment. All of these factors help lift people out of poverty, helps household incomes, powers consumer spending on our high streets, generates more revenue for the government’s social goals, helps more people onto the housing ladder, lifts our overall economic growth performance, and above all – lifts our quality of life. So as we build on these achievements in 2015, we must look forward to securing clarity, resolution and speed on the recommendations of the Smith Commission concerning more powers for the Scottish parliament, placing the needs of business at the heart. That is why I cannot emphasise enough that when business is successful, Scotland is successful.

Law eats into food waste failures

I

n January 2014 the Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012 legislation became law, requiring any business that prepares, produces or sells food and generates more than 50 kg of food waste per week to separate their food waste for collection. (*There are exemptions.) On January 1, 2016 that 50 kg will reduce to 5 kg effectively capturing all food businesses even if you are just a small cafe producing teabags and coffee grinds. As Jim Brown, commercial manager with Binn Group points out, the new law makes sound environmental sense. “In the past, food waste was collected with general waste, mixed in and gone pretty much to landfill,” he explained. “Food waste contaminates everything so it ruined good recyclable materials meaning more went to landfill by default. “Now segregating at source means we can do something with that food waste,” explained Jim. “We are actually generating electricity from people’s discarded food. It shows what can be done if material is handled properly at source.” In November 2013, a report carried out by Zero Waste Scotland identified the scale of food waste in this country – most of which could have been eaten. In the hospitality sector alone, the total annual mixed waste was 266,200 tonnes – food waste accounted for 85,600 tonnes of that total. Over 32 percent. Of that food waste, 75% was avoidable and could have been eaten. It arises from three main areas – 21% spoilage, 45% food preparation and 34% from customers’ plates. The cost of food waste to Scotland hospitality and food industry is currently £166 million a year (from same 2013 research). “There are huge financial savings to be made by businesses reducing food waste by understanding how and why that waste is created in the first place and take action to reduce or prevent it occurring,” said JIm, “and everyone in Dundee and Angus can play their part.” Segregated food waste is now seen as a useful energy resource. Through an anaerobic digestion plant, one tonne of food waste can generate about 300 kw hours of energy. TEG Environmental handles around 30,000 tonnes of food waste a year through its plant at the Binn Group waste management and recycling complex at Glenfarg. * Exemptions – In Dundee and Angus there will be some businesses exempt from the new laws because of their geographical location. Businesses should check through the rural postcode search on the Zero Waste Scotland website.

Every day in Scotland we throw away the equivalent of 2.6 million slices of bread. Every year Scottish households throw away £93 million worth of dairy waste – enough for everyone in Scotland to have milk on their cereal for the next six months. We throw away £70 million worth of fresh fruit every year in Scotland – the equivalent of an apple a day for every schoolchild and teacher in the country for 18 months.

HE Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012 have already impacted on many food and drink operations across Dundee and Angus. With the second phase about to bring the vast majority of local eateries within the new laws on January 1, 2016, waste management specialist Jim Brown, commercial manager with Binn Group, talks to InCommerce about the legal requirements to segregate food waste and the repercussions for local businesses.

CREATIVE LEARNING

Creative Learning DUNDEE REP HAS Scotland’s largest permanent creative learning team working with approximately 27,000 children, young people and adults every year. The aim is to create ambition and aspiration through participatory theatre practice at Dundee Rep and in Dundee Communities, which is achieved by placing the highest quality creative practice at the heart of delivery. The local charity also provides theatre as a tool for corporate training and development, with an ethos of establishing a learning environment through creativity and experiential techniques. The Rep’s creative learning team use techniques such as role play using professional actors, practical scenarios, staged performances and facilitated sessions in a safe, supportive and non-threatening environment. The benefits of this work have been realised by Dundee University School of Law with whom they have worked over the past three years. Each year, students from their diploma in legal practice participate in scenarios that are played out by actors from the Rep’s adult community company. First-year law students also benefit from this type training, and they come to the Rep for voice workshops to practice standing up in court – preparing them for the real thing. Suzi Morrice, Head of Creative Learning said: “We create a very practical and realistic process for organisations. The briefing process with our clients is essential, as we need to understand the development requirements of the organisation and the individuals; we then create bespoke and tailored training for them. “Creative learning practices help promote social skills, increase self-worth, improve internal and external communications and enhance problem-solving. When given creative means people perform at their personal best. The critical and reflective process offers space to anyone to reflect on self, others and situations which we find ourselves. It offers alternatives to words and conventional means of communication and is much more fun than your average day at work. “We are also very proud that the funds generated from this service go directly back into our work with children, young people and adults with emotional, social and health issues.” For more information please contact Susie Crawford 01382 223530

Combat The Troll In Your Workplace: Social Media Issues for Employers

Troll: an ugly, cave-dwelling creature depicted as either a giant or a dwarf Troll (internet): one who posts a deliberately provocative message on a social media forum with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument. The terms “troll”, “trolling” and “trolled” are being increasingly used in the media. More frequently these terms relate to the latter definition above (although the recent Hobbit trilogy has perhaps caused some confusion given its reference to the former). In any case, employers should be aware of the existence of any “trolls” within the workplace and, where appropriate, should be educating staff and taking action in relation to such issues.

How can employers combat these trolls? Employers should, as a minimum, take three steps to protect against such issues: •

Create clear guidelines: If not already in existence, employers should create a social media policy. This policy should address what use of social media is not permitted, at what times social media sites can be accessed by employees, whether commenting about the employer is permitted, whether such sites can be used for business development purposes and, if so, who is in charge. Employers should also ensure that staff handbooks include examples of social media-related misconduct within the definition of gross misconduct.

Take disciplinary action, where appropriate: Employers who discover any social media misuse which has an impact on the workplace should take appropriate action against the offending trolls. Employers who historically turn a blind eye to social media misconduct will be criticised by an employment tribunal for taking action in the future.

Be consistent: Employers should avoid a knee jerk reaction when responding to social media misconduct. Instead employers should treat each incident on a case by case basis however should take into account the following factors when deciding what disciplinary action (if any) is appropriate:whether the employer has a social media policy in place; the nature and seriousness of the alleged misuse; any previous warnings for similar misconduct; actual or potential damage caused to customer or client relationships.

Why should employers care about trolls in the workplace? Increasing use of social media by individuals has resulted in some high profile employment tribunal cases. An employer can be held vicariously liable for harassment or “trolling” which is caused by one of its employees. This means that any employee who has been subject to unwanted conduct within the course of employment by a “troll” colleague could raise a claim against his or her employer. This situation could arise even when the employer is unaware of the troll’s existence or online activity. Trolls can be deadly to their opponents. Internet trolls can be costly for their employer. If in doubt about internet trolls, employers should take legal advice. Every employment lawyer will confirm that it is far cheaper to take pre-emptive legal advice about such issues before disciplinary action rather than to resort to reactive legal advice after dismissal when faced with an employment tribunal claim. Unfortunately Blackadders is unable to give any useful advice about other type of trolls.

IN BUSINESS

TAX PLANNING & COMMERCIAL INSURANCE

THE TAX RETURN filing season for 2014 is drawing to a close and no sooner is one tax year being concluded that our attention turns to the next tax year. February is the month when most individuals consider tax planning to maximise their wealth at the end of the current tax year. The government has made it clear that tax avoidance and evasion are morally reprehensible and illegal in today’s society. However, they do want to stimulate business and investment and they have created and extended allowances and incentives targeting these objectives. An example of this being the changes that were announced on how you can spend your pension savings. You no longer need to buy an annuity and can withdraw as much of your fund as you wish, so long as you pay your taxes. The reintroduction of unused relief from prior years allows for greater input into your pension and if you can draw this money as you please, once you reach 55 years of age and subject to the rules, then pension saving becomes very attractive. In certain circumstances company director shareholders can now immediately withdraw £190,000 from their business, tax free and still have their pension pot! If you are not a business owner but have income within the bands £50,000 - £60,000 or £100,000 - £120,000 then pension saving can be very effective. These are the income brackets that have high marginal rates of tax due to the withdrawal of child benefit and personal allowances respectively. For example you can save tax at 60% if you make pension contributions when your income is in the £100,000 - £120,000 income bracket. There are also other allowances available that can legitimately reduce your tax bill. The main ones being:

• Annual investment allowance for plant and machinery.

• Making use of your full ISA allowance.
All of the allowances require action no later than 5 April and in some cases sooner. We therefore recommend you review your investment and saving plans now and we are happy to help you.

Home Rule Roadshow To Visit Dundee on 5 March Voters should regard the Smith Commission’s plans on more devolution as “only the beginning” and tell Westminster themselves what home rule for Scotland should ultimately look like. THE EVENT WILL be a round table discussion held over lunchtime at Chamber East, Dundee. The Campaign for Scottish Home Rule (CSHR) is holding a nationwide roadshow on the issue, with the aim of drawing out people’s views on the final shape of a home rule settlement. The nationwide roadshow will visit Dundee on Thursday 5th March at Chamber East to gather the views of the local business community. The UK Government launched a detailed command paper on how the Smith Commission would be translated into law after the general election, which LibDem minister Danny Alexander hailed as, “the dream of Home Rule made real.” However the cross-party CSHR called the command paper a “missed opportunity” and “unsustainable”, and said voters had yet to have their say on the issue and could help improve the current offering. Hamira Khan, a member of the campaign’s steering commission and chief executive of the Scottish Youth Parliament, said: “The aim now is to ensure Scotland’s constitutional future is not just a political horse trade between politicians, and the people of Scotland have their say on what that is and how it is delivered. “The Smith Commission proposals and Command Paper are only the beginning of this process. “Poll after poll now shows that the majority of people in Scotland want a fair and meaningful Home Rule settlement.” Feedback from the consultation will be published before the general election on May 7.

Willie Sullivan, director of the Electoral Reform Society Scotland, said: “Cross party agreement on Smith so far has provided some progress, but there has been a failure to consult on any meaningful level. This campaign will provide one space for engagement moving forward, and that is welcome. Change needs to take place against a backdrop of public participation.” The Campaign for Scottish Home Rule was launched in November by financier Ben Thomson, and the steering group includes former Labour First Minister Henry McLeish, former LibDem MSP Margaret Smith, former Tory MSP Derek Brownlee, former SNP MSP Andrew Wilson, former head of media for the Scottish Greens James Mackenzie, former moderator of the Church of Scotland Dr Alison Elliot, and public services academic Professor Richard Kerley. The campaign‘s three basic principles are that Holyrood and Westminster should have the tax and borrowing powers to raise the money they spend; that there should be a presumption in favour of devolving powers and the burden of proof should be on those arguing for powers to remain reserved at Westminster; and a written constitution should underpin mutual respect between the parliaments.
