DUNDEE & ANGUS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
hen you read this, I will have completed a year as president of the Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce. As we embarked on that year, I wanted to make the Chamber a strong voice for business in our region: we had to be relevant, representative and robust. In this we are making progress and we can celebrate some fantastic business success as a Chamber providing almost 25% of the finalists in the Scottish Chambers of Commerce 2014 Scottish Business Honours Awards. Whilst we have demonstrated business success over the year, the strength and power of our Chamber as a cohesive body was epitomised for me earlier this month in our very robust and proactive response to the grievous closing of our fellow members, Muirfield Construction. Time and formal analysis will perhaps one day reveal to us how a well-respected and highly-successful local contractor, employing over 250 staff and turning over £47M, could in the space of two years end in failure and administration; Muirfield’s loss was a sad day for our region and building sector. But the response to the collapse of Muirfield, in which DACC played a leading, central role was inspiring and demonstrated to me once again what a strong Chamber can do for its local community. When Muirfield was closed, the government implemented their PACE (Partnership Action for Continuing Employment) national strategic partnership framework for responding to redundancy situations. Local and national agencies gathered at Dundee and Angus College to provide guidance, support and employment advice to the Muirfield staff.
Our Chief Executive, Alison Henderson, immediately identified the pressing and immediate need for our support and put the call out to members at very short notice to join the PACE event and to offer hope and jobs to the workers so badly let down by events.
“
Muirfield’s loss was a sad day for our region and building sector
”
I was nothing less than moved to see 12 of our member companies respond immediately with not just tea and sympathy but with jobs and opportunities for the Muirfield team. Instead of the PACE event being a sad and frustrating reflection on a challenging economy and business environment, it became an upbeat, energetic work fair, buzzing with optimism and potential. People got jobs that day and our response and leading role as a Chamber was widely recognised. Thank you to all those companies who backed our folk and our community when they needed help most: I was so proud to be your president that day and, after a year in the post, I remain proud to serve the Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce.

A WELCOME FROM THE CEO
T
he first quarter of 2015 has felt a bit like taking a ride on a theme park’s tallest rollercoaster. Imagine spending lots of time with your friends, enjoying the many rides and attractions as you take hundreds of pictures and make memories. Then it’s time for the big one! You queue patiently with a big group of people, gradually filling up the carriages and excitedly chatting about what’s coming next. Your journey begins with a steady climb and you pass signs as you go up, reminding you of all of the fun rides you’ve been on, building excitement and taking you higher and higher. Then you reach the top of the track and instead of going even higher, the world suddenly tilts and you all plummet down with that gut-wrenching feeling. I’m sure you all know what I mean! For me, 2015 so far has seen some amazing highs. DACC ran its first High Noon Lunch of the Year with Microsoft and Chris van der Kuyl who inspired us all to think about our 2020 business vision and how technology is dramatically impacting on everything around us. Our evening visit to the incredible Professor Sue Black and her team was another of the many highlights in our events calendar. It was an honour to be allowed in and tour round CAHID. We hosted a dinner for our Platinum Partners and the Scottish Chamber of Commerce (SCC) Board the evening before SCC held their first Board Meeting in our city. There was an open and frank discussion about business, the economy and the role Dundee and our region is playing and influencing nationally. Dundee welcomed the First Minister and several members of her Cabinet and other Ministers when the National Economic Forum came to Dundee. This was the first time it has been held outwith

the central belt and many DACC members were mentioned during the main platform sessions.

”
Design has also been to the fore, with Kengo Kuma and the team responsible for our iconic V&A Museum of Design Dundee project breaking ground and Dundee’s title as the UK’s first UNESCO City of Design being formally launched. Then we had the tragic news that Muirfield Contracts had closed its doors, with the massive impact on the workforce, contractors, suppliers and associated business community. This was as gutwrenching a time as any I can remember. The speed with which our members responded, to allow us to join the PACE team and really make a valuable impact, was immense and ground-breaking itself. I am very proud to be part of an organisation leading such an amazing Dundee & Angus business community.

The Centre for Anatomy and Human ID (CAHID) is one of the world’s foremost institutions for the study and application of human anatomy, forensic human identification, forensic science, disaster victim identification and forensic and medical art. Members were fascinated about the work Sue and her CAHID team carry out on a daily basis and also the incredibly vital training the researchers, postgraduate and undergraduate students receive. There was an inspiring tour of the facilities within the centre, including the Val McDermid Mortuary where attendees viewed the cutting-edge submersion tanks named after crime writers, such as Jeffrey Deaver, Kathy Reichs and Harlan Coben. In the Stuart MacBride dissecting room we learned about the world-renowned technique of embalming bodies using the Thiel soft-fix method, which preserves
bodies with life-like flexibility and tissue quality. CAHID is the only Scottish centre using this cutting-edge system which has made an enormous difference in how the teams learn. The final part of the tour was a vsit to the ‘FATAL’ department, home to a number of unique skeletal collections that play an important role in teaching. These collections are available for CT scans, laser scans and 3D reconstructions. The University of Dundee accepts bequested remains for the purpose of anatomical teaching, training and research, and the great respect shown by the team at CAHID for these remains made many people interested in finding out more. If you would like further information on this and how to be registered as a donor, contact the bequeathal administrator, Mrs Vivienne McGuire – v.mcguire@dundee.ac.uk or tel 01382 388825.

In March we held two Training Academy sessions. The first from Laura Lucas of Inspirential on Delight Your Clients, Charge What You're Worth (and get it!) and Grow Your Profits. The second from Sandie Holmes of 121 HR Solutions on Time Management. Laura of Inspirential showed members how to understand what clients value about them uniquely and what that’s worth. She then asked them to focus on how to enrol clients by focusing on value, not cost, how to attract more of their ideal clients, delight them and get referral work. Attendees left feeling confident about pricing their product and organising payment. Sandie of 121 HR Solutions asked members to look at how they spend their day and showed them how to identify timesavers. She demonstrated how to be better organised for peak efficiency, how to understand the importance of and
experience gained while working on programmes to support their journey into work. Chamber members learned what is currently happening in our area to support businesses and their future workforce and businesses took the opportunity to indicate their willingness to get involved in future activities. Many DACC members have participated in the Certificate of Work Readiness Programme and we hope to see many more getting involved in supporting young people and also reaping the benefits. Debbie Reekie, Senior Solicitor at Blackadder’s commented: “I really enjoyed the Time Management session. It helped me identify ways I can perhaps prioritise my work better. The most useful part of the session for me was the urgent / important matrix. It is helping me think about what is urgent, what is important and what I can defer or delegate. I am putting it into practice now. Hopefully, I’ll see some improvement!” If you’re interested in attending future Training Academy sessions, visit our website for full information. RBS Explorer Breakfasts DACC EXPLORER BREAKFASTS are kindly sponsored by the Royal Bank of Scotland. Explorer Breakfasts give members the opportunity to enjoy breakfast, while maintaining and making new connections, along with the opportunity to explore an organisation they wouldn’t necessarily have access to. In January, members had the opportunity to visit the outstanding Hospitalfield House in Arbroath. Hospitalfield was the home of artist and collector Patrick Allan-Fraser and his wife Elizabeth Fraser who left an extraordinary legacy for the support of the arts in Scotland. It was a lively and inspiring morning, hearing from Lucy Byatt and Scott Byrne of Hospitalfield Arts while touring the unique, historic and beautiful building. April’s breakfast event took us to the NHS Tayside’s Children’s Hospital situated within Ninewells.

Members heard from Lesley McLay, NHS Tayside Chief Executive, about the extraordinary work the staff do, making a difference to children's lives every day. The hospital’s Paediatric Consultant Anaesthetist and Paediatric Surgeon informed attendees of the clinical difference a new theatre suite will make to the facilities. Attendees then heard from the ARCHIE Foundation, the official charity of Tayside Children's Hospital, on its current fundraising activities to raise money to facilitate this new theatre. The ARCHIE Foundation is working hard to make a big difference for every child in Tayside who needs to attend Ninewells, making their experience fun rather than frightening. Dundee & Angus Tourism Conference TOURISM IS LEADING economic transformation across Tayside and Scotland. It creates jobs, sustains communities and provides a critical shop window for business activity across all sectors. In line with 2015 being the Year of Food and Drink, attendees joined us to celebrate the role that food and drink plays in shaping our economic success and showcasing Scotland’s outstanding local produce. Thanks to those who attended the region’s annual conference at the Carnoustie Hotel and Spa, brought to you by DACC, Angus Council, Dundee City Council and VisitScotland. Attendees gave very positive feedback, saying it was extremely worthwhile and time well spent away from their businesses. The potato vodka, berry-infused gin, Dundee cake and fresh crab canapés consumed went down a treat! We heard from some first-class industry speakers. Wild Thyme, Tabla, Arbikie and Ardross Farm Shop talked about the importance of using and promoting local produce, and tying in business promotions as part of this themed year.

Roger Dunnett retires after 30 years at the helm New taxi driver course at D&A College ON MARCH 9, D&A College staff welcomed the first cohort of licensed taxi drivers who had enrolled on a brand new course dedicated to them. Nine drivers made Kingsway Campus their destination as they took part in the Introduction to the Role of the Professional Taxi and Private Hire Driver programme – a qualification set to become mandatory for the city’s taxi drivers in future. A unique aspect of the course is that Dundee City Council asked that it include the WorldHost Customer Service Training which the Council would like to integrate into all of Dundee’s Hospitality and Retail businesses, making Dundee a worldrecognised WorldHost Destination. Dundee City Council is planning changes in legislation in 2017 which will mean drivers in the city must have this qualification to hold a taxi licence. “There are about 1,300 taxi drivers in Dundee and to continue working as licensed cabbies after April, 2017, they will have to have successfully completed this course,” said Bruce Donaldson, Business Advisor at D&A College.
WALKER DUNNETT & Co, Chartered Accountants and Independent Financial Advisers, employs a team of 30 people across their offices in Dundee and Carnoustie. The company offers accounts and tax services, plus independent financial advice on pensions, investments and protection to businesses and individuals throughout Scotland and beyond. Succession planning is key to ensuring the smooth transition of one generation to the next without disruption to a business and Walker Dunnett has helped many clients with their succession policies. The company has been working on its own succession plan for
the last five years which culminates in 2015 seeing changes in personnel. The successful execution of the plan ensures there will be a seamless transition. On April 30, Roger Dunnett retires as partner. He joined the firm in 1984 and over the three decades has overseen significant growth in the firm. Danie van Niekerk, who has been at Walker Dunnett for over 11 years, is assumed as partner on May 1 and replaces Roger at the head of his team. Walker Dunnett is delighted the transition is working smoothly and is looking to continuing its upward growth.
Dundee firm BRE providing equipment for the new Forth bridge A DUNDEE COMPRESSED air engineering firm has consolidated its successful start to 2015 by securing a contract to supply compressed air equipment to the new Forth replacement bridge, ‘The Queensferry Crossing’. The new crossing, Scotland’s biggest infrastructure project in a generation, is expected to open to traffic by the end of 2016 and is estimated to cost between £1.4 and £1.45 billion. BRE will supply nine new Atlas Copco Model GA30VSD+ FF Rotary Screw Air Compressors, fitted with integral
air dryers and Elektronikon control technology, to the project. Due to the nature of the installation location, BRE has also specially modified three heavyduty containers with inlet ventilation, exhaust ductwork and frost prevention heating. This is in order to house the compressed air equipment and protect it from any potential damage caused by the Scottish wind and rain. The firm, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, was founded by Managing Director Bob Robertson and has operated from the premises in West Pitkerro Industrial Estate since 1995.

In My Father’s Words tells the story of Louis, a university academic who teaches classics and his elderly father, Don, who struggles with loss of language as part of a gradual decline into dementia. Louis employs a carer called Flora who is of Canadian Scottish heritage. She realises the “nonsense” Don speaks is, in actual fact, broken Gaelic. The Dundee Rep production was directed by Philip Howard, joint Artistic Director of the Rep. He said: “Taking In My Father’s Words to New York gives us an incredible opportunity to develop our international touring skills while showcasing Dundee Rep on an international stage. Performing at a festival which celebrates the best of new works from British theatre will significantly raise our profile, as well as that of theatre in Scotland. He added: “Taking part in Brits Off Broadway particularly represents an introduction to the Gaelic language through a beautiful piece of writing, which is comprehensible to nonGaelic speakers.” The show will run for four weeks until June 28.

£2.9m restoration project at Verdant Works High Mill IT’S NINE MONTHS since work began on restoring the historic ‘A’ listed High Mill at Verdant Works. The project is progressing well and it’s gradually being transformed from a derelict and dangerous building into a stunning space. The beautiful Gothic cast iron roof trusses have been blasted and re-painted, returning them to their former glory. The new roof is on and when the windows are fitted later this month the building will finally be wind and watertight for the first time in nearly 30 years! Due to the importance of the building, a conservation approach to both the work and the recording of it is being taken. Wherever possible, repair over replacement is the guiding philosophy and over 1,500 photographs have been taken of features and works to date. Dundee Heritage Trust is delighted the rough industrial character of the building and its history is being retained.

Original features and finishes being kept wherever possible, even down to old light switches, rusty doors and historic graffiti. The £2.9 million project is being supported by £1,895,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, £500,000 from Historic Scotland, along with grants from 23 other funders – charitable trusts, companies and private individuals – who are together making this project possible. The innovative design has removed the wooden floors of the High Mill, creating a full-height cathedrallike space to reveal the skeleton of the building and the monumental scale of the architecture. The project will almost double the size of the museum, provide interpretation on new themes, allow more historic objects to be displayed (including the centrepiece exhibit of Leisure & Culture Dundee’s 1801 Boulton & Watt steam engine) and offer fantastic new opportunities for learning and community involvement.

National Economic Forum held in Dundee
T
he 2015 National Economic Forum took place in Dundee for the first time and was attended by a wide range of local and national delegates interested in economic and business issues. The event’s theme explored ‘Creating a more competitive and equal Scotland, through Innovation, Investment, Internationalisation and Inclusive Growth’. There were several keynote speeches, followed by workshops designed to allow attendees to feed into the theme. John Swinney, Deputy First Minister, welcomed delegates and introduced the First Minister for the Opening Address. Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister, gave an inspiring speech about the Scottish
Government’s vision and ambition for Scotland’s economy, delivering growth through the four key I’s: Innovation, Investment, Internationalisation and Inclusive Growth. Key to economic prosperity will be increased productivity and we must all look to improve Scotland’s competitiveness which will in turn improve growth. We were encouraged to celebrate success and this segued neatly into an inspiring presentation by John Reid, Factory Manager of Michelin in Dundee. John talked about his leadership journey and Michelin’s long-term strategy for their local base – how they are investing in growing the facility, developing their people and the connections to the wider community.
The four break-out sessions were interactive and gave some key feedback from the business community which will influence policy and strategy going forward. The event concluded with a Cabinet Secretary and Ministerial panel discussion before Fergus Ewing, Minister for Business, Energy and Tourism, gave the closing remarks and thanked all delegates for attending and taking part. Many DACC members were mentioned during the main sessions. In particular, Michelin, NCR, Forster Group and Arbikie were hailed as Scottish success stories. Well done to all concerned for an amazing event with great local impact!

A
“ground-breaking” ceremony on the V&A Museum of Design Dundee’s waterfront site and a reception at the nearby Apex City Quay Hotel, marked the formal start of construction work. Renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma joined with Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Europe and External Affairs, and representatives of V&A Dundee, Dundee City Council and BAM Construction for a short ceremony. The new £80.11 million project will create an international centre for design, the first ever design museum to be built in the UK outside London. Due to open to the public in June 2018,
“
We believe this is a project that has the potential to reshape our national landscape and be of benefit to all of us
it will be architect Kengo Kuma’s first building in the UK. Director of V&A Dundee Philip Long presented Kuma-san with a commemorative silver vessel, privately commissioned for the ceremony as a contemporary take on a traditional Scottish quaich. The vessel was created by Beth Henderson, a level 3 BDes Jewellery & Metal Design student at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design. In a painstaking process taking two full days, Beth raised a fine silver flat sheet into a 3D vessel using a blend of ancient techniques — Scottish silversmithing and eastern Keum-Boo (literally meaning ‘attached gold’).

Kuma-san presented a sake bottle made of washi paper created through a project set up after the 2011 earthquake to help skilled craftsmen from the East Japan region to restore their business after the natural disaster. The bottle was designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates (KKAA) and manufactured by Shiroishi Washi Koubou from the Miyagi Prefecture. This cultural gift will eventually be displayed in the new design museum. Kengo Kuma, the museum’s architect, said: “It’s always a great pleasure to visit Scotland, a country I love very much. When I first arrived for the competition site visit in 2010, Dundee was a very different place.
Already you can see the connection between the beautiful waterfront setting, the environment and the city is so much stronger. “We are delighted that our vision for the V&A Dundee building, which was originally inspired by the breathtaking natural setting, is now starting to take physical shape, creating a real sense of place. We look forward to forging even closer links between the people and cultures of Japan and Scotland over the coming years as we create our first British building.” Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Europe and External Affairs, Fiona Hyslop said: “Kengo Kuma has set out a spectacular vision for V&A Dundee that heralds

Phillip Long, Director, V&A Museum of Design Dundee, said: “A special day – a historic moment for Dundee. We are beginning the construction of a new building that, through its design, already helps symbolise this city’s new confidence. As the building develops, day-by-day it will demonstrate Dundee’s growing ambition in a very real and physical way. “We believe this is a project that has the potential to reshape our national landscape and be of benefit to all of us. We would like to thank everyone who has helped us reach this momentous day and we hope to keep all of our supporters and champions involved and inspired a long way into the future.” Dundee City Council administration leader Councillor Ken Guild said: “I am delighted that Kengo Kuma and Fiona Hyslop can join the partners behind the V&A Museum of Design Dundee to mark this important occasion for both Dundee and Scotland. Construction of V&A Dundee will give the economy a significant boost and assist in our efforts to create thousands of jobs at the Waterfront. The project to deliver this unique building will bring considerable attention to Dundee even before the doors of the museum open.
Alison said: “There was an undeniable buzz in the room, and in the city, about the groundbreaking and very visible start to this iconic project. I know that this project is being watched closely by many people around the world and it continues to ensure that investment eyes are on our region. We are delighted to see businesses coming into our region, and local businesses are doing as much as they can to plan for increased demands on their products and services as a result of the optimism that the Dundee Waterfront and other investment projects are bringing.”
“We are already enjoying the benefits of the recent award of UNESCO City of Design status, which reflects our growing international reputation. V&A Dundee will help to attract further investment into the city and we are already experiencing unprecedented levels of investor interest.” Tim Allan President and Alison Henderson CEO represented DACC at the reception.

Redesigning the future of healthcare services in Tayside
N
HS Tayside delivers healthcare services for around 400,000 people living in Tayside and north-east Fife. Our 14,000 members of staff provide health and care services in our cities, towns and rural areas, for young and old and those in between. From our big, specialist hospitals to our community hospitals, and even in people’s own homes, we make sure people across Tayside can access highquality health services. That’s a big responsibility which brings with it many challenges, but equally many opportunities to deliver our vision that everyone has the best care experience possible. Over the next 20 years in Tayside, we know that there will be many more older people. At the same time, the number of young people will shrink which means this will have an impact on the workforce available to the NHS. What this major change to the make-up of our communities tells us is that the demands for healthcare and the way in which our services will be delivered will be very different in future years. As well as this ageing population profile, our doctors and nurses and other healthcare professionals can see that people’s health needs are changing: people are living longer and more people are living with long-term

conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. For all these reasons, we must start changing the way we deliver healthcare now so NHS Tayside can continue to provide high-quality healthcare in the future. We have a vision in NHS Tayside as to how we can achieve the redesign of healthcare services, both in our hospitals and closer to home, so they can meet the needs of both our rural and urban communities. An example of this is our Community Enhanced Model of Care which is already running successfully in Carnoustie, Monifieth and Broughty Ferry, and has recently extended into the Arbroath area. This community-based model of care involves a variety of professionals including GPs, district nurses, occupational therapists and physiotherapists, pharmacists and specialist hospital doctors working together as a single team to support individual patients. The team aims to provide care and support in the patient’s own home and, where possible, avoid hospital admission. Hundreds of patients have already benefited from the support provided by the team which has reduced hospital admissions, reduced delayed discharges and, when it has been necessary to have a stay in hospital, has reduced that length of stay. We hope to extend this and introduce further, innovative models of care across Tayside in the coming years, but we recognise that we can’t do this on our own. We will always need the help of our patients and our communities to get it right. We are currently developing a Clinical Strategy which sets out how care will be delivered in the future in Tayside. Communities will be able to become involved in this strategy later this year.

ngus is open for business,” says Alison Smith, head of Angus Council’s Business Angus team. “It’s no wonder so many highly-successful international, national and local businesses are investing in and relocating to Angus.” Angus Council’s Business Angus team provides a range of services to businesses investing in or relocating to Angus, including: • Land and property portfolios • Support from experienced investment professionals • Assistance with employment • Sector specific business advice • Information and advice about the availability of grants and funding • Marketing and PR support • Access to a streamlined planning process. Angus has a growing, exciting and expanding economy, supported by a skilled, flexible and motivated workforce, an envious work-life balance and an excellent selection of competitively-priced property and land. There are excellent transport links with good road and rail networks, a deep water port and nearby airports, and there is good availability of schemes and grants to assist with relocation, further investment and development. Among the many business developments currently underway in Angus, pharmaceutical giant GSK is adding a £25million three-storey building to its manufacturing complex in Montrose. This will provide the site, which currently manufactures medicines capable of treating more than 20 million patients every day, with the capability of producing an additional 1,500kg of active ingredients for GSK medicines each year. To meet the demands of the global energy sector, GE Oil & Gas, which employs 450 people at its Angus base,
has invested in a £13.6million expansion project at its site in Montrose, while oil and gas company Hydrus, which was previously based in Aberdeen, relocated to Angus in 2011. “Angus has proved to be a very good location for Hydrus,” said Mark Williams, Hydrus Managing Director – Test & Assembly. “Costs are lower than in Aberdeen, there’s a highly-skilled workforce available locally, the transport network is very good, with easy access to the A90 and the deep sea port at Montrose – and, of course, there are the many benefits of living in Angus.” National call centre specialists Journeycall recently moved their headquarters to a purpose-built business unit on the outskirts of Arbroath. “With Angus Council’s support, we were able to make the move to our new headquarters as efficient and smooth as possible, while also increasing our workforce by 50%,” said Theresa Wishart, Journeycall’s Operations Director. As well as the multi-national and national companies which consider Angus an ideal business location, there is also a network of local companies with a reputation for innovation and enterprise. The envious quality of life, the willingness to work in partnership, the thriving businesses and the easilyaccessibility all contribute towards Angus’s first-class reputation as a business location. “Angus is an excellent base for companies working in any sector of industry, although we have particularly strong activity in engineering, food and drink, oil and gas and agriculture, as well as the onshore and offshore renewable industry,” said Alison Smith. “Business Angus is here to help industry,” concluded Alison. “In Angus, we have an appetite to assist.”

ABERTAY
HEAR by James Nicholson, Head of Student Services, Abertay University
A
s the economy improves and job creation accelerates, this summer’s crop of new graduates will understandably be more optimistic than their predecessors over the last few years. But for employers across the country, the problem of deciding just who is the best candidate remains as challenging as ever. Fortunately, a new initiative being adopted by more and more universities promises to make the task considerably easier. The Higher Education Achievement Report, or HEAR, records each graduate’s academic and extra-curricular attainment in a way that gives prospective employers a much richer and more fully-rounded picture of a candidate’s strengths than just a CV and degree certificate by themselves. Abertay University in Dundee is one of five Scottish institutions so far who have started issuing HEAR. From this summer, every Abertay graduate will be able to augment his or her job applications with an electronic HEAR, prepared to a standard template and verified by the university to give employers confidence in its accuracy and veracity. HEAR provides details of what the graduate’s course covered; a year-by-year breakdown of modules studied and marks obtained; and the main intellectual, practical and transferable skills that the student should have developed during their studies. In addition, one whole section of HEAR
provides information about prizes, awards, professional accreditation or activities and other approved extra-curricular activities – rounding the picture of the student beyond solely academic achievement. Because HEAR is an electronic document held securely by the issuing institution, information from it can be uploaded directly into online recruitment systems. Students can allow employers to have access to their HEAR information thus verifying key information quickly and simply, even before graduation if desired. This would be useful in recruiting for internships during the academic year, as well as permanent employment in advance of final results. HEAR could even bypass the need for academic references by providing detailed, rapid and automated confirmation of student/graduate achievement. HEAR will help students to prepare more effective, relevant, targeted applications. It will provide an aide memoire in making applications and employers will be able reap the benefits of this. And there’s more: the online system that administers HEAR can also offer employers the ability to search for likely candidates with particular combinations of grades and experience, making the job of getting exactly the right candidate even easier. SCOTTISH CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE
Liz Cameron Chief Executive Scottish Chambers of Commerce
Committed to our Town Centres More needs to be done to encourage regeneration and to ensure that town centres flourish
B
usinesses are at the heart of local communities and the two are equally dependent on each other. That’s why Chambers of Commerce are so important; embedded in their local communities, created by business for business, they give a voice to business at the highest levels of local, national and international government, helping to influence legislation and create an operating environment that is right for business to flourish. One of the central features in this regard is our town centres and these have been the subject of several reports over the course of the last few years. Key to the debate is the changing nature of the retail market, driven by consumer demand. The priority for town centres is to recognise and enable change and to allow these important locations at the heart of our communities to evolve smoothly from retail domination to multi-use hubs, fit for purpose for modern living and working.
More needs to be done to encourage regeneration and to ensure that town centres flourish. This needs both an innovative and flexible approach which should encompass not only the “bricks and mortar development of local areas, but also the way business is delivered and its ability to meet the requirements of modern social patterns. More public/private sector cohesion is required and local authorities need to recognise and support ambitious and forward-thinking investment plans for town centres. In particular the cost of doing business in, and using, town centres needs to be managed at an affordable level. The Chamber Network is ideally placed to assist with the sharing of bestpractice and development of appropriate local solutions and can support the training and mentoring of staff to deliver these solutions. Get in touch with Dundee Chamber to play your part in sharing your contributions.

Most reservists have civilian jobs and therefore this has an impact on employers, so we took a bit of time to examine the issue and find out what motivated two local reservists to join their local unit and how they feel it has helped them in their civilian life.
Ainslie Cook is a student from Springburn, Glasgow studying Nursing at Stirling University. She joined the Army Reserve in 2014 and is now a Level 2 Mechanic with 106 Bn REME. What attracted you to join the Reserve Forces? I was a member of the Air Cadets at school and it seemed the natural progression to join the Army Reserves. What skills and experiences have you developed since being a member of the Reserves? I have gained skills in engineering, leadership and teamwork. What has been the most interesting thing

that you have done with the Reserves so far? Completing my Class 3 Vehicle Mechanic Course at Bordon in January 2015. Do you feel what you have learned in the reserves has benefited your civilian career, and if so how? I have become more confident whilst with
the reserves having learned new skills that have helped me a lot whilst studying at University. Has life as a reservist lived up to your expectations of what you thought it would be like? Yes it has exceeded my expectations, it’s the best decision that I made.

Scott Law is unemployed in civilian life and a Vehicle Mechanic in the Reserves. What attracted you to join the Reserve Forces? I was studying at college and had very little prospects of work after qualifying to be a welder and wanted to be a Vehicle Mechanic. What skills and experiences have you developed since being a member of the Reserve? I’ve gained skills in engineering and completed my class 3 Vehicle Mechanic
Course. I have also matured since joining and developed better people skills, which has helped improve my employability. What has been the most interesting thing that you have done with the Reserves so far? Attending Summer Challenge 2012 and passing out, also attending my first ever battle tour of Normandy. Do you feel what you have learned in the reserves has benefited your civilian career, and if so how? Although I am unemployed I have found that the skills I have learned whilst attending the
Reserve’s has put me in a better position with improved life skills. Has life as a reservist lived up to your expectations of what you thought it would be like? Definitely. The reserves has exceeded my expectations and it is better than I thought it would be. I have been able to do lots of different activities there is always something new to learn.
Employers can benefit greatly from employing a member of the reserve forces. Reservists at all ranks gain skills from the military in leadership and teamwork as well as developing their self-confidence, motivation and problem-solving abilities to name but a few. This training can be worth up to £22,000 to employers in terms of the transferrable skills they will receive from employing a reservist. Reservists are also often trained first-aiders and drivers, which can save money for employers in their training budgets. The Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) Reserve presents an excellent opportunity for vocationally qualified engineers. Such people can enter the organisation with genuine credibility from Day 1, and will be able to use their existing skills to good effect in a challenging and exciting environment. Opportunities for vocationally qualified
tradespeople in the REME are farreaching, extending far beyond their trade. International operations and exercises, military training, sport and outdoor pursuits, together with a real sense of purpose and camaraderie await them. There are opportunities available to men and women from all walks of life to learn new skills, make friends and try a range of activities, all whilst getting paid. We employ metalsmiths, armourers, vehicle mechanics/electricians and recovery mechanics. We’re also looking for military instructors, chefs, drivers, radio operators and clerks. There are plenty of opportunities for sport, adventurous
training and courses. We pride ourselves on our commitment to developing the potential of all of our members, both professionally and personally. Service in the REME Reserve is of benefit to employers as well as employees, and the Ministry of Defence provides a new enhanced support package for the employers of reservists. Further information about this is available on the SaBRE (Supporting Britain’s Reservists and Employers) website www.sabre.mod.uk and you can also find contact details for one of their local representatives if you wish to chat to someone in person.
106 Bn REME has companies across Scotland in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Grangemouth and they are recruiting now. For further information please contact their team on 0131 310 5800

CHAMBER INSIGHT
KERRY FINDLAY
Kerry Findlay
Events & Marketing Manager
Shining the spotlight on DACC's Events & Marketing Manager Read on and discover what keeps Kerry busy! Kerry, my organisation has a news story. How do I share this via the Chamber?
I’m interested in becoming part of the Training Academy. How do I get involved?
Members contact me, usually via email, with the information, a relevant image and organisation logo. All member news is uploaded to the news section on our website, then promoted through our social media channels. News stories are then considered for the Weekly Buzz, our enewsletter, which goes out to members every Friday. The Weekly Buzz is sent to 1,500 individual member emails. Our website receives over 12,000 hits per month. And, of course, we include news stories in the magazine.
The Training Academy is set up for members, who are specialists in their subject, to offer training to fellow members. The Training Academy runs twice a year, with the first block in March, April and May, and the second block in September, October and November. If you would like to offer a short twohour interactive training session, please contact me to arrange a meeting. The Training Academy is a great opportunity to raise the profile of your expertise and organisation, while delivering a valuable training session to help further fellow members’ skills.
Our company is holding an event. Can I promote this through the Chamber?
I would like to advertise and promote my organisation via the Chamber. What opportunities are available?
Yes, of course! All that’s needed is an email with all the event information including Date, Time, Location, Prices and event description, including booking links or contact details. Most members send over an image or logo to be used alongside this. Your event will then be added to our events page and promoted via DACC social media channels and, if possible, our weekly Events Round-up newsletter. This newsletter is sent out every Wednesday to over 3,200 individual email addresses, including non-members who have subscribed. I’ve had an event idea and want to hold it in partnership with DACC. What do I do? DACC is always open to new event ideas and partnering with members. If you have any ideas, please get in touch to organise a meeting with me to discuss this further. I will mostly take responsibility for the planning, promotion, booking and delivery of an event. It will be advertised through our website, social media channels, e-newsletters, magazine and at events in the run up.

INSURANCE
Private Client Insurance WHEN SOMEONE OWNS a house with a re-build value in excess of £250,000 or contents worth over £75,000, their insurance requirements are more bespoke. A standard household insurance policy is not, as a rule, suitable. To cope with high-value items like collectables, Antiques or Fine Art, a Private Client household product is more appropriate. In addition they may require specific covers to complement the Private Client Household insurance (sometime referred to as High Net Worth). High-value motor cars, enhanced Travel insurance and Marine/Pleasure Craft insurance are examples of bespoke products that can be arranged. Owners of listed properties from small cottages to stately homes appreciate the need for a suitable and relevant
insurance policy to ensure the home and its features are adequately protected. In some circumstances it is possible to obtain “Unlimited Replacement Cost” coverage, meaning that in the event of an insured loss the property could be repaired/ reinstated (as dictated by the Conservation officer) even if the cost exceeded the sum insured. A Private Client benefits from expert advice on all aspects of insurance protection and should insist on the personal services of experienced insurance advisors in this field. Using an insurance broker with independent Private Client experts will ensure the most appropriate cover. For independent expert advice for Private Clients from Towergate in Scotland contact David Robertson on 07872 197767 or email david.robertson@towergate.co.uk.

Parental Leave
SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN relation to the way that employees take leave following the birth of their child came into effect for babies expected or placed for adoption on 5 April 2015. Employees who are eligible for maternity leave can still take 52 weeks of maternity leave. That system will remain in place and some may decide to take maternity leave. However in other cases, eligible parents may decide to utilise the flexibility to take shared parental leave. Shared parental leave allows eligible parents to share up to 50 weeks of leave and 37 weeks of pay within the first year of their child’s life or within the first year after a child is placed for
adoption. The first two weeks of leave after the birth of the child must be taken by the mother alone, thereafter leave can be shared in a very flexible way. The Government has stated that the aim of these changes is to give parents more freedom to decide how they care for their child in the first year of its life. It is hoped that this will increase the amount of time that fathers spend caring for their child in the early stages. The idea is that both parents can retain a strong link to the labour market. It is thought that this will allow employees more flexibility to balance work and child care. The new system of Shared Parental Leave is a fairly simple concept but the detailed notifications processes do take some getting used to. Helpful guidance has been published by ACAS and BIS, designed to help employers understand new entitlements and to help with the complicated notification process. Whether or not this leads to a permanent change to modern parenting remains to be seen. All employers need to be aware of these changes. They should also ensure that they have an up-to-date policy in place to reflect the new legal entitlement. A clearly-drafted Shared Parental Leave policy will help employers to avoid breaching this new entitlement. www.dundeeandanguschamber.co.uk Member Helpline 01382 228545

BLUESKY EXPERIENCES
BlueSky Experiences share the 5 KEY ATTRIBUTES for a high-performing team 1
Purpose: Vision, Mission and Values Your purpose will give clarity to the vision, mission and values of the organisation and its functioning teams. • Your Vision must be aspirational, embracing the future. • Your Mission defines your organisation and who your primary customers are. It identifies your products and services, and describes your geographical location. • Your Values shape the culture, the way people interact with each other and the environment they wish to work in. A team’s value set must be created and committed to by everyone so there’s a common approach of co-operation and collaboration, embracing integrity and recognising success.
2
Defining Roles and Responsibilities It’s vital individuals have clearly-defined roles and an understanding of their role, function and responsibility. This will give clarity to their tasks, what is expected within the team and who they report to. If there are areas of considerable overlap and people are unsure of their roles and responsibilities, this can lead to inefficiencies and disputes, reducing performance.
3
Operating Procedures You can apply personal and team development programmes supporting the improvement of team effectiveness, but if the operating procedures are
not addressed in conjunction with these programmes, the team will fall back to the default state of average performance. Ask yourself the following questions: • Could we communicate more effectively with face-to-face meetings or phone calls rather than emails? • How well do we run our meetings? Does everyone turn up on time, do we have an agenda and do the meetings run to time? • Do we have meetings too often or not often enough? • Why do we have large distribution lists for emails? • Do emails sometimes cause offence due to misunderstanding? • Would we benefit from having a more open-plan office? • Do we take time to plan? • Do we take time to monitor performance and celebrate success? If teams do not make improvements in their operating processes, this can easily lead to misunderstanding, conflict and poor performance.
5
Inter-team Relationships The most common reason given for poor organisational performance is Silo Mentality – the inability to communicate effectively between teams. This area of team effectiveness is often viewed as the most challenging. However, if a leadership team within an organisation is viewed as highly-performing and demonstrates an environment that people would wish to replicate, this is a good starting point to improve interteam relationships. Improvements in operating procedures of an organisation will make a big difference to the interteam relationships and allow for the development of stronger relationships across the organisation At BlueSky Experiences we have designed team building and development programmes using a mix of behavioural styles and experiential learning activities. This combination of behavioural styles and hands-on practice with experiential activities is proving very successful with our clients, meeting their expectations and evidencing a return on investment.
4
Relationships At the heart of a highly-performing team there are robust and effective relationships. These relationships start with the development of personal effectiveness, the awareness of oneself and others in the team. Individuals in a highly-performing team will embrace behavioural diversity, engaging in fierce and challenging conversations, reaching a united decision.
If you would like to learn more on how we can support you in your journey from a good to a great performance, please do contact the BlueSky Experiences Team on 01738 840804 or info@blueskyexperiences.com.

CHAMBER INSIGHT
LISA COOPER
Lisa Cooper
Business Studies student, Abertay University
Work Experience Placement with Dundee & Angus Chamber of Commerce
I
am a third year student at Abertay University, studying Business Studies with Finance. As part of my course, for the past 10 weeks I've been working one day a week in the Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce. This has been an incredible experience for me as I have learned so much in my time here. Immediately upon starting with the Chamber I was made aware of their heavy involvement in event co-ordinating. My first week I was updating the Events page on the Chamber’s website with information on the many events planned both within the Chamber and its members. My second week I attended my first event which was a Royal Bank of Scotland Explorer Breakfast where I learned what is involved in the running of an event. This is a new interest that I have developed in the weeks that I have been working in the Chamber and have been working with Kerry on planned events. We planned the Archie Foundation RBS Explorer Breakfast together. As well as event coordinating I have been working with Eve, our Membership Manager, in contacting members to arrange their certificate presentation. This was an especially

good learning experience for me as I have not been very confident phoning people in the past and I built my confidence through doing this and receiving positive feedback from Eve

”
and other colleagues in the office. My favourite part of working with the Chamber is the opportunities that are open to me for meeting new people within the business world. After arranging meetings with several members for Eve to present them with their certificates, I went along to one of these meetings and was able to hear
and learn about their business and offer suggestions on becoming more involved with universities in order to employ graduates. I have also been working with Eve in her mission to recruit more members. I have attended membership lunches that she has arranged with both current and potential members in which they can network with each other and the potential members can experience the benefits of being a Chamber member. Working with the Chamber has been one of the most enjoyable experiences I have had in my professional life. Everyone in the office welcomed me and made me feel part of the team from the very beginning and I would recommend this as an excellent place for anyone to work. I would especially recommend them to a young person hoping to become a well-rounded professional as they have just received the Investors in Young People Accreditation which was well deserved. I will take with me the skills and confidence that I have gained in working with the Chamber through my professional life and hope that one day I will be able to work with them again in the future.
