OPENING SHOT

O

ur theme this quarter is connectivity and the importance of strong connections to our region and with our region to our key markets. Many are working hard locally to focus on the vital importance of improved road and rail connections on our economies in Dundee and Angus, and they are so right to do so. Additionally, we must ensure the absolutely key improvement to our connectivity through the 4G roll out and the delivery of state of the art broadband in our region, without which modern, smart economic delivery is severely hampered.

“

Connectivity is not just physical or material: it is also a state of mind and perception

My view then can afford to be slightly more remote, while others cover these key areas. I am more concerned with the connections that we as a city region make with the wider country, Scotland and the UK, and our connections to the European Union and the world. In September last year, the large majority of Scots voted to stay part of an historic and broadly successful political and economic union with the United Kingdom. This historic decision to reject independence reaffirmed our connections with England, Wales and Northern Ireland and said clearly that we wish to remain part of an economic bloc that has served us well. Open markets, free movement of workers and capital, shared burdens and common purpose have outweighed the mistakes and shortcomings of the Union. The current reversal in the oil and gas sector due to depressed oil prices has been consummately absorbed by the UK allowing

4

DUNDEE & ANGUS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

the Scottish economy to still grow despite the oil collapse. I suspect that our confirmation of the Union last year will be paired in due course with a firm affirmation of our collective desire to stay in the European Union. Latest Scottish Chambers’ polling shows a 6 to 1 level of member support for a proEuropean stance. Scottish business leaders are stating clearly that our connection to Europe and through Europe the wider world is valuable and important to us. Naturally, the Chamber will continue to take a neutral stance on political issues but we will resolutely publish survey results and publicise the findings on our member consultations. Speaking personally, my conversations with members on Europe are predominantly enthusiastic about staying connected to Europe and clear in our view that the region is open to partnerships and collaborations with our nearest trading partners. Being seen to be connected is as important as any actual connection: Scotland and Dundee/Angus have to be seen as part of Europe and the UK and ready to welcome all potential business partners who might see our links with the EU as vital to our credibility. Connectivity is not just physical or material: it is also a state of mind and perception, and we have to be seen to be open for business to the world. Withdrawing from the world and wider economics connections is neither credible nor tenable: we are part of a global community and need to embrace and promote this fact, or wither in the periphery of Europe.

A WELCOME FROM THE CEO

P

eople may forget what you say, they may forget what you did, but they will never forget how you made them feel Whether those people are your staff, your customers or your business contacts if you understand what they want from you and your business, and make sure that you deliver it in a manner that makes them feel good – then you will definitely have a recipe for success! The main thing that Dundee & Angus Chamber of Commerce is asked over and over by members is to make introductions/recommend a business locally and connect people. Take the time to know the people who are important to the success of your business, and cultivate those relationships – invest time and energy in people and it will reward you. Create positive experiences that reinforce that message that you value people: run a staff day; hold a great event to entertain business contacts; take the time to engage on social media with business connections. Be genuine and your business will reap the benefits. You’ll see increased revenue, staff morale and positive profile – you know you’re worth it! With that in mind, we are running a series of events in the second half of 2015 dedicated to helping businesses develop their strategy, culture, people and processes. Come along to our event at Dundee Football Club on 9th September – the latest in our Explorer Breakfast series – which will give attendees a peek behind the scenes at the commercial aspects of the club.

Be genuine and your business will reap the benefits. You’ll see increased revenue, staff morale and positive profile – you know you’re worth it!

And our Business to Business Showcase is going to be bigger and better than ever in 2015 – we are taking over the Caird Hall, to give you all a chance to promote your businesses, and enjoy a really inspirational seminar – Funding Your Business for Growth. The final element of the day will be our AGM – a date for your calendar not to be missed – see you all on 23rd September!

Loveday reminding players of the rules and regulations before all players took their position for a shotgun start. The weather started off sunny and warm with a light breeze – not bad conditions for a links course. Donna and Rebecca from the Chamber had organised to go round on a buggy with refreshments to help keep energy levels up. The feedback from the players was great, they were enjoying the course. However, like true golfers things were not going according to plan: the greens were fast, the wind was picking up and the rough was deep! A few balls were lost. A new member of the Chamber, David Lawrence from Foremost Golf Photography, was on hand to get some action shots. By the end of the afternoon the weather had changed and waterproofs

were needed but you can never dampen a golfer’s day out! The players enjoyed high tea after their golf, which was delicious with a variety of dishes to choose from followed by plenty of tea and cakes. Andrew Crerar, the Professional at Panmure, was a joy to work with – he supported really well during the preevent organising, and was a huge help on the day – everyone at the Club was very welcoming and made the day a great success! Vice-President Dave Valentine, who had played, was on hand to give out the prizes. The winning team was DC Thomson with a score of 87 with each player receiving a trophy and a Ryder Cup cap and scarf; runner-tup team was GS Group with a score of 80, they also received a trophy and a Ryder Cup tie.

Development at Dundee Science Centre – featuring medical technologies

Dundee Science Centre celebrates its 15th anniversary THE CENTRE IS a leading visitor attraction, as well an established centre of excellence in science learning, with a culture of curiosity, confidence and engagement with science. Dundee Science Centre is an independent charity and first opened its doors in July 2000, welcoming visitors to an immersive and exciting, hands-on exhibition experience. Since then, the Centre has evolved into a learning centre, social venue, festivals’ hub and a recognised contributor to formal education. Looking ahead, funding has been secured to drive a major expansion within the Centre, focusing on medical technologies. Linda Leuchars, acting CEO said, “We are here to help families learn together, to support the formal school curriculum, advance the science communication profession, bring

together science and all sectors of the public, including ‘hard-to-reach’ communities. “Our exhibitions are open 363 days per year, providing an inspiring, handson learning experience for everyone to visit. Our outreach work and festivals also help us take the same experiences across Scotland and beyond. “As we celebrate this key milestone, we would like to thank everyone involved in the Centre’s growth and evolution – including the thousands of visitors and hundreds of partners we work with to provide our diverse and tailored programmes for all ages – and very much look forward to the next 15 years!” Dundee Science Centre engages with more than 100,000 people each year through in-centre visits, community engagement, outreach activity and festival coordination.

Mobile marketing and software originators company Hotcake digital media have developed a mutli-sector platform which can work virtually for any business in any sector, from a simple marketing and communications tool application to a full blown suite of tools used in their latest project. The Bellshill business have developed an App for Social housing contractor award winners McTear contracts and they expect to save around £75,000 over the next year by using this new mobile app developed by them. Following the completion of a successful pilot scheme earlier this year, Hotcake has tailored its app to give McTear Contracts an easy and quick way to log work and provide the company with a paperless audit trail, coupled with a workflow integration platform including: • customer engagement-phone-face2face-Tenant portal, payment systems • repairs and maintenance – lower cost and improve workforce scheduling, send jobs straight to operatives and instantly notify relevant authorities • smarter office processes – be mobile be flexible and intuitive with work processes and process information anywhere anytime.

Craigclowan delivers an outstanding day school education for boys and girls aged 3 - 13

open morning Thursday 08 October 9am - noon. All welcome No appointment necessary

This complete social housing software is to revolutionise the public-sector contractor’s 100-strong workforce to complete daily worksheets and inspection sheets, update check lists and obtain electronic signatures for all jobs completed. By giving our operatives smart devices, we have cut the time they spend travelling to and from the office to check diaries and paperwork. Instead, they have access to automated diaries, reducing cancelled or forgotten appointments from over 40 per cent to below four per cent. “Another advantage of communicating via a Smartphone app is the low cost, at just a tenth of the cost of traditional communications, and the immediacy of it, helping to reduce missed appointments.” A profiling exercise of users of the council’s housing services found that people aged 60+ rated the previous service as excellent, but those aged 16-24 rated their satisfaction with the services at less than 50 per cent; they didn’t like the bureaucracy and wanted to be able to interact through Smartphones and social media. “Through the mobile app, a tenant diagnosing and reporting a housing repair can place a request in the hands of a contractor within just 15 seconds. They can also track the status of their request. Therefore, as well as replacing paper-based schedules with electronic schedules, this has removed the need for repairs inspectors to visit the office and enabled them to initiate works directly from their Smartphone.” Sean McKeown CEO and founder said, “as a young new start its vitally important to win new business and quickly, this has allowed us to gain fast credibility with the glowing endorsements particularly around this very in-depth project. Our business strategy is clearly defined on the mobile apps front – Everyone’s got an app surely? Nope, many companies are put off having an app because they think you have to pay a developer bundles of cash to build one for you but that’s no longer the case, at Hotcake digital media we have built a very extensive platform which can be tailored to the specifics of any business.” For a free consultation please call us on-0800 689 3483 or mobile 07917444193.

Bumper year sees Dovetail invest in the future DUNDEE FURNITURE MANUFACTURER, Dovetail, has increased its annual sales by half a million pounds to £2.9m in the year 2014/15. The increased income has enabled investment, particularly in the business development team. The team has grown significantly with the recruitment of a Business Development Administrator, a Technical Administrator, an Estimator and the promotion of Carrie Shannon from Sales Support to Business Development Executive. Future recruitment plans include additional Estimators and a Field Sales Executive. Earlier this year Dovetail attended the national hospitality exhibition, ScotHot, where they launched a new identity and strapline “not just furniture…” to highlight the additional bespoke furniture and interior design services on offer to their customers. To showcase the new identity, the website has been redesigned and expanded. In response to customer feedback, it now includes technical specifications for individual items of furniture. Furthermore, the Estimating Department has been restructured to streamline service to clients, allowing them to respond more quickly to enquiries and process quotations more efficiently. Sales and Marketing Manager, Ann Jamieson, said, “I am absolutely delighted that all our hard work is paying off and we now have a fantastic opportunity to move forward. We hope our customers will start to benefit very quickly from the improvements we are putting in place.” A recently completed project at the Atholl Hotel, Aberdeen.

121 HR Solutions introduces successful performance management process PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT IS increasingly seen as fundamental to sound HR processes, but according to a recent survey, many organisations are providing only rudimentary feedback that doesn’t meet employees’ needs. Only 44% of the 2,226 employees polled were set clear objectives with fewer than 20% saying their performance was explained in the wider context of contribution to the organisation and 18% received no feedback of any kind. Outsourced HR provider 121 HR Solutions recently worked with Avian, who are based in Broughty Ferry, to support them in the implementation of a performance management process. Avian merged with Blue Square Design two years ago creating two specialist companies – Avian and Blue2 Digital. The introduction of a new appraisal process was the culmination of a full employee relations integration across the two businesses. 121 firstly worked with Managing Director Scott McCallum and Operations Director Jim Patrick to help define a vision and values for the business which underpinned a competency framework.

Caledonia Housing Association celebrates Excellence Award

Jim Patrick, Operations Director and Vicki Anderson, Finance Manager, Avian.

The staff were coached in the development of clear job profiles which helped them understand their roles, responsibilities and expectations – all of which were aligned with the agreed competencies and the values of the merged business. Measureable performance standards were then devised to provide a means of objective measurement. Finally, an annual appraisal process was embedded into the business with training given to managers and staff so they could understand the benefits before receiving their first annual appraisal. Commenting on the process, Managing Director Scott McCallum said, “The performance management process will undoubtedly improve communication and enhance performance, both for the staff and our business. I am delighted that everyone in the business has committed to this process and am convinced that the programme 121 has completed, developing and integrating effective performance management, will reap rewards for us all!

CALEDONIA HOUSING GROUP is delighted to announce it has achieved the prestigious Committed to Excellence accreditation from Quality Scotland. The Committed to Excellence (C2E) award is a European-wide recognition scheme that’s been developed by the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM). Balhousie Care Homes work with schools in Dundee BALHOUSIE CLEMENT PARK Care Home, Harris Academy and St John’s High School came together over a year ago to give pupils the opportunity to access youth achievement, or employability skills, by volunteering within the home. The original idea was to have the young people coming into Balhousie Clement Park to chat and engage with the older members of their community. This soon blossomed into a fantastic intergenerational initiative that saw the youngsters visiting the home every Monday afternoon and working with the residents on a variety of projects and activities including gardening, mosaics, weaving and reminiscence sessions. The schools and Balhousie Care Group were delighted when a joint funding bid saw them secure £4,121 from the ‘Access to Education Fund’ to finance their endeavours. This project saw pupils build on their skills, knowledge, confidence and responsibility, and has empowered them to contribute to

their communities. In turn, the residents of Clement Park have immensely enjoyed the ‘breath of fresh air’ the young people bring with them on their weekly visits. It’s also given residents the opportunity to maintain that very important link with their communities and has increased motivation and self-worth. There’s also been lots of fun and laughs along the way! Cheryl Banks, Participation Partner, Balhousie Care Group said, “It was imperative to prepare the youngsters for the reality of 24hour care and what they may experience on their visits. Together with the teachers we worked with the pupils and held sessions to chat and dispel any concerns.” The whole experience has been extremely positive for everyone involved. One of the most inspirational examples is the story of Harris Academy pupil Chloe Walker. Chloe has truly found her vocation at Balhousie Clement Park and now volunteers twice a week. Once she is old enough to leave school, she’ll take up a position as a full-time Care Assistant. Chloe’s words in an essay she wrote explains exactly what this project has meant to her: “Volunteering has changed my life, so yes, it is good for you. It has given me opportunities and confidence to move on in my life and I recommend it to everyone. My dream has come true. I am working in a place where I am making a difference and it feels right for me. I have the biggest smile on my face when I walk in the building. Volunteering there makes me feel good about myself. Seeing the residents smiling and making them laugh makes it all worthwhile. “The Balhousie Clement Park Care Home has meant I am sharing my time between them and school. This has meant that I am settled at school and now have a goal of working full-time at the home. They have said they would be willing to employ me and give me training when I leave school, so that is fantastic!” There’s to be a celebration event at Clement Park. Everyone will enjoy a high tea and there will be a showcase of the project with Dundee City Council’s Director of Education, Michael Wood, popping along to see the great work that has been going on. Balhousie Care Group and Dundee City Council’s Education Department look forward to the new term starting and continuing the strong partnership links established and more young people of Dundee being welcomed into Balhousie Care Homes.

From one-man band to a staff of over 60!

Fraser’s Whisky Tastings entertain Round Table visitors FRASER’S WHISKY TASTINGS helped Dundee Round Table entertain visiting guests last month with an introduction to Scottish malts at their annual International get together. Over 100 people gathered in the Malmaison Hotel, Dundee to enjoy good food, company and excellent whisky. Fraser’s Whisky Tastings added after dinner entertainment to an already lively evening by introducing the eight different visiting nationalities to the malts of Scotland – from the history of the five regions and distilleries to ‘how to taste’ using the right glass. The night was a great success with the home nation enjoying the local history and the taste of a dram not tried before and many of the visitors trying malt whisky for the first time. The evening finished with the guests being presented with branded memento glasses.

IT’S CERTAINLY CHANGED times since Jim Graham started his one-man pest control business in 1993 with his wife Anna running the office from their home in Blairgowrie. From these humble beginnings, Graham Environmental Services now employ over 60 staff across three businesses, specialising in Pest Control, The Graham Environmental Services team. Hygiene Services and Fire Extinguishers. Ross Graham, Managing Director, explains how they achieved this impressive growth, saying, “We worked hard to build a reputation for being friendly, professional and competent. When we branched out into new services our existing customers were happy to support us.” The first of these new ventures was Graham Hygiene Services, formed in 2010 by Phil McKenna, to provide businesses with kitchen extraction and ducting cleaning, washroom services and PAT testing. This was closely followed by Graham Fire Protection for the sales and servicing of fire extinguishers, fire risk assessments and signage. At this point, the company felt it apt to add “Protecting Your Business” to their logo as many of their services are driven by insurance or compliance needs, due diligence or an audit requirement. Sales Director, Stuart Graham continues, “By looking after our customers and staff we have been able to grow and secure a promising future.” For Jim though, he never imagined the company would be where it is today when he started 22 years ago!

The new Seabraes bridge.

Seabraes Bridge enhances waterfront redevelopment THE ARCHED FORM of Seabraes Bridge is a striking new landmark along Dundee’s waterfront. The bridge, designed for Dundee City Council by local architects Nicoll Russell Studios and constructed by Morgan Sindell, creates a new link to a hitherto neglected part of the city. It broadens the scope of the redevelopment of the waterfront beyond the now familiar central area where Kengo Kuma’s V&A Museum is taking shape and where the new station and hotel development, also designed by Nicoll Russell Studios, should shortly commence. A former railway marshalling yard, until recently Seabraes has been a forgotten backwater with no throughroad links and cutoff from the nearby Tay river frontage by the east coast mainline. This lack of connectivity has been identified as a key element to be addressed in the redevelopment

of Seabraes as a Digital Media and Creative Industries area – to be called ‘District 10’ – that aims to build upon Dundee’s growing reputation in software engineering, particularly in the field of computer games. Spanning over the railway, the new pedestrian and cycle bridge establishes for the first time a link between the river frontage, the new District 10 and the bustling university district beyond. Fully accessible by ramp, stairs and lift, the bridge also enhances the viability of development sites on the waterfront itself previously separated from the city by the railway line, through improving their pedestrian and cycle connection to the city as a whole. Funding Bodies: Dundee City Council, Sustrans, Tactran, Vacant & Derelict Land Fund (VDLF), Cycling Walking & Safer Streets (CWSS), Scottish Enterprise and Developer Contribution – H&H Properties.

ALTHOUGH FREQUENTLY OUT of sight, everything in our lives is underpinned by soil — our roads, our homes, the food we eat and the water we drink. At the Royal Highland Show, and as part of the International Year of Soil and Scotland’s Year of Food and Drink, the James Hutton Institute celebrated the importance of maintaining healthy soils for the delivery of and the role played by land managers. Over 30 soil samples from all across Scotland were judged on different criteria as part of the Best Soil in Show competition. The Best Soil in Show asks entrants what they’re growing in the soil, the rotations they are operating and what they are adding to the soil. The 2015 prize was presented by Dr Aileen McLeod, Scottish Government Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Land Reform and by European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Phil Hogan, to David Scott-Park from Portnellan Farm in Dunbartonshire. The Young Farmers category was awarded to 17-year-old Douglas Greig from Tealing by Dundee who was also winner of Best Soil in Show 2014. This year the competition was presented with the continuing support from the Scottish Association of Young Farmers Clubs (SAYFC) and new partner Soil Association Scotland.

CHAMBER INSIGHT

MEMBERSHIP

Eve Hughes Membership Manager

An Interview with Eve Hughes, Membership Manager Eve discusses how she helps businesses get value from being a member of Dundee & Angus Chamber of Commerce I like coming to Chamber events, but what else can you do for me?

sure I’m getting value for my membership?

We always work hard to make sure we offer a wide variety of events at all different times of the day. By doing this, we create as many opportunities as possible for members to come along and do some face to face networking. But don’t worry if you still can’t find an event that suits you, there are lots of other benefits you can take advantage of. We regularly share member news via our magazine, website and social media which can really help to raise your business profile. While networking, I am always listening out for opportunities for businesses to connect and do business together. If I hear of anyone that needs a service that our members offer, I will always signpost them to our members’ services and make introductions wherever possible. For this reason, we’re really encouraging our members to make sure their profiles are up to date. A recent new member told me, on checking their web traffic, they could definitely see that after only a few days being on our member directory had driven visitors to their website.

There are an extensive number of benefits available, but we know that one size doesn’t fit all. We launched a member promise this year called DACC123. This is our members’ opportunity to tell us the top three things they value from membership. What better way to understand our members’ priorities than to ask them? We also know that businesses priorities change as time goes on, so with each year’s renewal, we will ask you to let us know of any changes to make sure we’re giving you what you ask for.

There are lots of great membership benefits, but not all of them apply to my business type. How can you make

DUNDEE & ANGUS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

I am interested in making contact with another Chamber member – can you set up a meeting? Of course! We ask that all of our members are open to getting to know other members, because we know that making connections and talking to peers or other organisations is an invaluable way to develop business, either now, or in the future. I’m always happy to make an introduction to a fellow member organisation. I will be guided by any preferences you have on how you would like to approach this, but also taking into consideration how the person/business in

question would prefer to be approached. I am always happy to find out who the relevant person is within an organisation that you need to speak to, based on the purpose for your contact. For example, if you’re simply looking for some peer support and need to find someone whose role is similar to yours so you can share information, then let us know that and we’ll get the closest match possible. We are holding a special offer for Chamber members only – is there any way you can let members know about our offer? We would be delighted to do this. The Chamber actively encourages their members to do business together wherever possible. If you’re in a position to offer a special rate to fellow members, that’s great. You can make any offer open to the business owner and if you wish, their employees too. As we have some members that are large employers across Dundee & Angus, this could be a great way to raise your Business to Customer profile as well as your B2B one. Once you have decided what the special offer to DACC members will be, we will promote this for you in our Member to Member offer page, on website news and social media. There is no limit to the offers that you can make, so if you would like

to tailor this to a particular audience, or make a seasonal offer, then we’re happy to accommodate this any time. I’m not a member yet, but I would like to join – what’s the next step? You can do this simply and quickly by selecting the “Join Online” option on our homepage using a credit or debit card.

Or, if you prefer to speak to someone before you make that final decision, then you should contact me or one of the team and we’ll be happy to talk through any questions you may have about how membership fits with your business specifically. We can send you an application form electronically which gives you other payment options such as BACS or monthly standing order. Once we receive your form and payment for

membership, you will have access to all of your membership benefits immediately. We know that businesses who get the most from membership are businesses that engage with us, so why not let us help you promote your business by sharing as much information as you can that will help us raise your profile among our membership and wider business community. DUNDEE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

How, where and why Dundee is connected

M

AKING and maintaining connections is so much a part of the everyday life of a business or organisation that for many people it becomes second nature. But with that familiarity and comfort could come the concern of taking connectivity in all its guises for granted. To place the focus firmly back on to networks Dundee City Council’s fourth annual economic summit recently took the subject of connections. A number of interesting and informative speakers, including the Chamber’s CEO Alison Henderson, shared their experiences of the ways in which their connections benefit people, communities, local economies and employers. As the pace of development in the city heats up and the opportunities to grow and expand businesses increases, the importance of being truly connected at all levels becomes ever clearer. Local and international businesses as well as representatives of Dundee City Council and an expert from Liverpool on the renaissance of the city that sits on the Mersey all gave interesting and informative perspectives on connectivity and its role in the successful delivery of objectives. Taking a close look at how, where and why Dundee is connected made the 2015 summit’s timing particularly appropriate. The continued positive progress on the infrastructure element of the regeneration of the waterfront and the need to grasp the latest technology to keep us in the forefront of growth hinges on and has already used connections of many different types. Partnerships across the public sector, with private enterprise and between visionary and creative people are already bearing

24

DUNDEE & ANGUS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

fruit as we see the street pattern and development sites emerging at the waterfront and the V&A Museum of Design Dundee begin to take shape. Connections are made and defined in many ways but as a city Dundee has them covered. Whether it is physical connections like the roads or rail network, the communications connections like the high speed fibre broadband available across the city or the connections between people and organisations, we are joined up and poised to push ahead towards even greater growth, opportunities and prosperity that all of our citizens can share in.

Connections are made and defined in many ways but as a city Dundee has them covered.

Dundee City Council has a strong commitment to social justice and equality and perhaps one of the most important dimensions of connectivity is creating and maintaining a city and city region where communities are connected with each other, and the benefits of growth are felt by everyone. The Economic Summit not only connected with business leaders but also created the opportunity for them to make a few new links that could benefit them, the city and everyone who lives and works here.

Al-Maktoum College offers students dynamic courses

T

he summer months at Dundee’s Al-Maktoum College of Higher education involve a wide range of interesting academic and other activities. The independent and international research-led college that opened in 2001 is offering dynamic and challenging courses, formalised in partnership with the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA). Starting in September, the six full-time, accredited courses – devised to appeal to as wide a selection of potential candidates as possible – are in the following subjects: Professional Diploma in Islamic Economics and Finance; Advanced Diploma in the study of Islam and Muslims; Advanced Diploma in Arabic Language; Diploma in Arabic Language; Certificate in Arabic Language and Introductory Certificate in Arabic Language. The Professional Diploma in Islamic Economics and Finance is intended for students who wish to pursue a qualification in the field of Islamic economics, finance and banking while the Advanced Diploma in the Study of Islam and Muslims is relevant to any candidate who wants to learn about Islam and Muslim communities or societies in conjunction with other religions. The Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Arabic Language are customised awards, which will assist students who are eager to become familiar with certain aspects of Arab culture, society and history at a high level. The Certificate and Introductory Certificate in Arabic Language are awards aimed at helping students acquire a good command of the language used in everyday social conversations, current affairs and job-related situations.

Principal and Vice Chancellor at Al-Maktoum College, Dr Hossein Godazgar, said the courses were fully inline with the College’s drive to advance overall learning and understanding. “These courses represent a significant educational development that we trust students will find both stimulating and dynamic,” said Dr Godazgar. “Overall, these courses fit well into our ethos and commitment to teaching and research and we aim to develop them further.” Established in 2001, the College is a not-for-profit educational charity and one of the small number of private colleges of higher education in the UK. This year’s Summer School, the 20th such educational programme, will be attended by 60 female students from the United Arab Emirates with the focus on challenging them to learn and understand more about Scotland, its people, its history, culture and traditions in the contemporary world. The College also recently held a one-day conference for more than 30 senior pupils from six Dundee schools to discuss and debate Islamic issues. Its aims were to provide young people with a more in-depth knowledge and understanding of the contemporary topics related to Multiculturalism and Islam.

This means we have a responsibility to cultivate and strengthen academia-industry connections, and one example of this comes through our Internship Graduate Certificate (IGC). This credit-bearing academic module provides intensive training for a six-month internship and helps to meet the needs of employers by ensuring graduate-interns enter the workplace with the skills required by recruiters.

Across the University, work is taking place between students and researchers from disparate disciplines, each bringing their own perspective to issues that the world faces.

Employer feedback has been enthusiastic, with Vital Hike, Return 2 Scene, Progressive Partnership and Scotherbs among the companies to have engaged with the programme. Interns and placements are carefully matched to ensure the best possible fit for both concerned, and a high proportion IGC graduates are retained by their internship company each year.

Our students are encouraged to participate in volunteering as a means of developing skills, gaining experience and engaging with the wider community and a wide range of extracurricular activities, both academic and social, help to boost employability. Another initiative that aids employability is The Enterprise Gym, which seeks to foster entrepreneurial spirit and innovation in students and the skills learned by TEG participants ensures they contribute positively to the economy – and society in general – after graduation. Teaching is built around innovative team-based learning that addresses real-world problems. This was borne out when an interdisciplinary team of students won an unprecedented hat-trick of major prizes at the iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine) world jamboree in Boston for developing a device that combats some of the effects of cystic fibrosis. The University community is drawn from nearly 200 countries and our record on widening access to students from deprived backgrounds is one we are proud of. Across the University, work is taking place between students and researchers from disparate disciplines, each bringing their own perspective to issues that the world faces. Most of the great ideas come at the boundaries of disciplines but you need to provide the space to allow that to happen. By bringing together people from different disciplines, backgrounds and cultures, embedding employability in the curriculum and offering a wide range of extracurricular activities we ensure the University of Dundee’s graduates emerge into the working world ready to make a contribution and be an asset to any employer.

T

he power of building good business connections should not be underestimated in the drive to grow successful businesses – connections with customers, suppliers, advisers, new markets and even with other businesses. Every business owner has a network of connections they have already worked hard to build. But how do you expand that network with the right contacts for your business or indeed strengthen your existing connections. One of the best ways of making useful connections is by meeting other professionals – experts in a particular field, people who can offer a service that you need or even like-minded businesses. This is where Angus Council’s Business Angus team can help. Set up last year under the leadership of Alison Smith, head of the council’s economic development team, Business Angus is a new way of working proactively with Angus companies to offer not only a

range of networking opportunities, specialist advice services, training and recruitment support, and funding signposting. “Business networking events are great places for sharing ideas and knowledge. Whether it’s discussing current challenges, talking about experiences in new markets, asking for help or just building new connections, it is very likely that attending will be people who have already been where you are today, “ said Alison Smith. “Our quarterly Angus Business Breakfasts were set up to do just that – offering themed advice sessions on topics such as funding, marketing, social media or exporting, but also giving time to learn how other Angus businesses are operating,” she continued. “It always amazes me when I am out and about visiting our companies, just how innovative, market leading and often global our Angus businesses are. They

It always amazes me when I am out and about visiting our companies, just how innovative, market leading and often global our Angus businesses are. all have one thing in common though – they are proud of being located in Angus and want to help the growth of business as a whole across the county by sharing their knowledge and experience with others,” said Alison. And one man with his own connections to Angus, who will be sharing his global experiences, is Dr Mike Butler, CEO of Xceleron, a world leader in pharmaceutical research and development based in the States. Former Forfar man and now Global Scot, Mike is the keynote speaker at the next Angus Business Breakfast on 14 September – an event that kicks off the second Angus Business Week and one not to be missed. Angus Business Week is a week of events, covering a wide range of business topics, running from 14 to 18 September 2015. This series of business focused events is run by a collaboration of business support organisations that specialise in supporting and advising Angus businesses and helping them to reach their full potential. As well as sharing expert advice and support, Angus Business Week also provides an opportunity to find out more about the general support available to

business, and how different organisations can help you with different areas of your business. The full range of support available through Business Angus can be found at www.businessangus.com, which also includes case studies on some of the county’s most innovative businesses – large and small. But the team can also connect with other specialist business advisers working regionally and nationally – from export and joint venture opportunities to capacity and capability improvement programmes and support. And to keep connected sign up through www. businessangus.com to the monthly Business Angus enewsletter, which not only showcases some of the successes of business across the county, but also highlights news, events and case studies from a range of business organisations. Stated Alison, “It is important for us that we really listen to businesses, clearly understand their challenges and by working together try and offer solutions tailored to needs. We may not always be able to solve all issues but we make a commitment to try our best.”

Business Rates…don’t you just love them?!

R

eform of the business rates system has been much talked about by UK and Scottish Governments for years, but a radical overhaul of the system or the introduction of an alternative basis of local taxation has thus far failed to materialise. Rates payable on business premises is governed by two main factors – the Rateable Value of the property and the Uniform Business Rate (UBR). The UBR is set by Government, whilst the Rateable Value is set by the local Assessor at regular (normally 5 yearly) Revaluations. Owners and occupiers have a right to appeal the Rateable Value following Revaluations, and in certain circumstances there is a right to appeal between Revaluations. In addition, there are various forms of rates relief, such as the Small Business Bonus Scheme (SBBS) in Scotland. The SBBS currently provides 100% relief for eligible properties with a combined Rateable Value of up to £10,000, 50% relief for those with a combined Rateable Value between

32

DUNDEE & ANGUS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

£10,001 and £12,000 and 25% for those with a combined Rateable Value between £12,001 and £18,000. Additionally, businesses with multiple properties whose cumulative Rateable Value is £25,000 or less are eligible for relief of 25% for each property with a Rateable Value of less than £18,000. The next Revaluation of all commercial properties in Scotland will take effect from April 2017, having been postponed from 2015. The Rateable Value assessment is designed to reflect the Market Rent of a property at a specific date, known as the ‘tone date’. The ‘tone date’ for the 2017 Revaluation is April 2015. Commercial property owners and occupiers will shortly see property information return forms drop through their letterbox. These forms request information on property rents and lease terms. It is imperative that these are completed accurately. If in doubt, businesses should take professional advice when filling these forms in.

2017 may still seem some time away, but will be here before we know it. The Revaluation is intended to achieve fairness of rates liability by ensuring that Rateable Values are based on up-to-date rental values and, as a result, that liability for rates is distributed in line with relative movements in property values since the previous Revaluation. Approximately 67,000 appeals were lodged in Scotland following the last Revaluation. These appeals resulted in a total reduction of approximately £219 million in Rateable Value. The scale of that reduction reinforces the importance of the appeal process. Commercial property owners and occupiers should plan ahead now with a view to instructing a commercial property specialist both in terms of providing the Assessor with the appropriate property return information and, following the Revaluation, on potential appeals.

Are we a nation of Tech FrontRunners? Nora Senior, Chair of Scottish Chambers of Commerce, provides insight into how Scotland’s businesses can grow by embracing technology. Nora is Executive Chair, UK Regions & Ireland of global firm, Weber Shandwick. A former Businesswoman of the Year, Nora is a regional adviser to the London Stock Exchange and was recently awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award for Services to Business.

I

often think about how fast the world has changed and continues to evolve – it’s hard to believe that just 10 years ago, the first video was uploaded to YouTube, Facebook dropped “the” from its name and Bitcoin did not even exist. Today in 2015, YouTube has more than a billion users, Facebook has 1.4 billion users from every country on Earth and Bitcoin could be as disruptive as the Internet itself! If you need to be convinced that your business needs to have a digital presence and that your business can grow as a result, let’s picture it this way – 10 years ago, out of 7 billion people on the planet, 1 billion were online… that figure now stands at 3 billion! And this number is going up every day! So, as business owners and operators, we can agree that the shift in technology is well and truly

34

underway and we have to embrace the opportunities that are out there for us. As a business owner myself, I see the challenges and opportunities every day. We are constantly thinking about obtaining new contracts, managing our cash-flow, balancing our time over operational activity and strategic objectives – this is what we do day-today but from my experience, the only way to support business growth in Scotland is to tackle the barriers that exist head-on. Having grown my company from a start-up and now part of an international company, I know growth does not come easy. It requires ideas, determination and achievable goals. We have to continue to innovate and with competition increasing locally and internationally, the mantra “Grow or Die” has never been truer. We can all use a trusted ally to get us moving faster on the path of growth and

for businesses, the trusted ally today, is Technology. We have to capitalise on our rich entrepreneurial roots as a nation. Great world inventions have emanated from our lands – from Alexander Graham Bell and the telephone to Alexander Fleming and the invention of penicillin. But we are in a completely different world now. Digital technology and social media have changed our jobs and our lives. We only have to look at the success of businesses such as Skyscanner, BrewDog and Clydespace – creating new business models which fit today’s consumer and global environment. These are Scotland’s new entrepreneurial giants and it is their legacy and leadership that must inspire a new generation of business leaders. This drive and ambition needs to be revived in Scotland. Our businesses have

“ to learn and experience how digital can help. We have to become a nation of Tech FrontRunners, not Tech Shirkers. Tech FrontRunners aren’t tied to their desks – they are literally mobile, with one finger on the pulse of their marketplace and another using their devices to stay in touch with daily office operations. In Scotland just now, there are not enough businesses enabled and inspired to do this just yet. Yes, there are great examples, but we need to move into a position where we are all doing it and making it the “new normal.” We are still a nation of Tech Shirkers, not just Scotland but across the world. Not using social media because we “don’t have enough time” or “it’s too expensive” or refusing to upgrade our technology because “we don’t need to” will not present growth opportunities for our businesses.

Sometimes, we ourselves are the main barriers to our own business growth so we need to test out and try what works for us as business owners – this is something we can all do and joining a local Chamber of Commerce to learn directly from the business community, is a great way of doing this! From a Chambers perspective, our members are telling us they want a more ambitious Scotland; a Scotland that invests in talent and young people; that is forward thinking and creative and crucially a Scotland with the capacity to act as a global player, with the confidence to attract global investment. Our ambition is clear – we are informing Scottish and UK Governments that by 2025, Scotland must lead the world in digital connectivity, both in terms of geographic availability and upload and download speeds.

10 years ago, out of 7 billion people on the planet, 1 billion were online… that figure now stands at 3 billion! And this number is going up every day!

To deliver this, we need Governments to work together to invest in key areas which can transform business growth in Scotland. We know that across Scotland, slow broadband speeds, availability of WiFi and inconsistency of service is holding business back. The ambition of business in Scotland has to be matched by the drive and willingness of our Governments – when both work together, we can deliver real progressive results in all areas. We need to re-imagine how we work and operate. Let’s build on the legacies of Scotland’s entrepreneurial giants and create a vibrant, innovative culture in Scotland where we are all Tech FrontRunners. You can follow Nora on Twitter: @NoraSenior1

VISITSCOTLAND

Tourism is more than sweetie money! Dundee & Angus Chamber of Commerce held a Tourism & Design Business Breakfast at DJCAD Degree Show where we heard about the Visitor Economy and how important that is for all businesses in our region. Malcolm Roughhead, Chief Executive of VisitScotland, spoke at the event, and updates us here on how we can all connect with this sector and why it’s such an important factor in economic growth.

36

DUNDEE & ANGUS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

D

id you know that without tourism the wine and spirits industry would lose £116m, £15m less would be spent on bread and biscuits, £700M would be lost on transport or the sale of sweeties would plummet by nearly £200,000? Did you know that tourism pays the wages of more people than the oil, gas and whisky industries combined? Tourism is more than a holiday – it creates jobs, sustains communities and provides a critical shop window for business activity across all sectors. What is clear is that tourism cannot be quantified in just the amount of hotels in Scotland – it’s the ripple effect it causes that places it at the heart of the Scottish economy. Its influence is being felt in every sector – from life sciences to laundry services. Without tourism, industries like food and drink, retail and construction would be severely impacted and without tourism the spotlight would not be on Scotland after an amazing 2014. We have made progress, but we still struggle to get the business world to take tourism seriously. People are starting to see that the visitor economy touches every industry, business and community in the country. Pick an industry, say life sciences, and try to find a connection with tourism. For VisitScotland the connection is simple – 70 per cent of the applications to our business tourism conference bid fund are from life sciences – bringing thousands of business people to the country. Now think carpet manufacturers, hairdressers, car hire companies, recreational services, education, sport, music, accountancy, banking – the list is literally endless. There’s no doubt that tourism is leading economic transformation across Scotland – with the success of 2014 leading to a focus on the country like never before. Look at the incredible developments we have seen – from the Hydro Arena in Glasgow and the stunning V&A Museum of Design Dundee, literally leading change in those cities. Then there’s the Borders railway line opening out a beautiful part of the country like never before or the Natural Retreats developments at John O’Groats and Cairngorm.

VISITSCOTLAND

Without tourism, industries like food and drink, retail and construction would be severely impacted

Look at the thousands of new airline seats bringing visitors into the country and the potential to bring visitors in from the Far East and Australasia through the routes being developed, launched and expanded by Qatar Airways, Emirates and Etihad airways. Add to that the launch of United Airlines from Chicago and a plethora of European flights into Scotland and the world is opening out like never before. On top of that tourism is creating jobs in every corner of Scotland – great jobs dealing with visitors and developing skills that are highly valued throughout the world. These are jobs where dedication and hard work pays off, where meeting interesting people is a daily experience and the opportunities to see the world are right on your doorstep. For every £50,000 spent in tourism a new job is created in Scotland. Deloitte recently estimated that around 350,000 jobs will be created in tourism in the next ten years – that’s up 20% on current figures. In the last couple of years some 29,000 jobs have been created in tourism. According to Deloitte, tourism is an £11bn industry and they estimate faster growth than manufacturing construction and retail. The tourism industry itself has set its 2020 vision to encourage tourism businesses to innovate, invest and inspire and VisitScotland is working closely with them to support that vision. So 2014 is over – the dust has settled on the Commonwealth Games and the Ryder Cup. Scotland has welcomed the world in 2014 but now we need to take Scotland to the world. 2014 saw CNN voting Scotland the top travel destination in the world in 2014 – now we have to use this warm glow to our advantage. At VisitScotland, we believe that we deliver economic success for Scotland by showcasing the country on a global stage as a place not just to visit but also to invest in. With the tourism industry, we have built a world-class brand based on a modern and traditional Scotland and have developed inspirational campaigns based on knowing our customers inside out. Our website is packed full of Scotland content and this is paying huge dividends in the number of people visiting VisitScotland.com and using our digital channels – from apps to Twitter and Facebook We

want to ensure that we inspire people to find, click and spend to grow the visitor economy across Scotland. We are developing exciting new partnerships to attack social inclusion through our accessible tourism project and are working with the industry to see how we can get involved in new and growing areas like social tourism and agritourism. Our marketing activity is paying dividends in every corner of Scotland – bringing jobs to communities in areas where tourism is the only growth industry – so not just showcasing those areas but bringing social and economic benefit as well. The industry is doing a phenomenal job and we are continuing to work in partnership with destination organisations and other industry groups to ensure that we listen and act on their good ideas and feedback. Quality is at an all-time high in Scotland and visitors name the friendly welcome as one of the main reasons they come to Scotland.

For every £50,000 spent in tourism a new job is created in Scotland

As we develop tourism this year we are already seeing the success of 2014 – now we have got to make this year work to bring success over the next decade. To do that we need to put tourism at the heart of the economy – move it away from the just a holiday experience and see the potential this industry has to sell Scotland to the World and benefit every corner of the country. Every tourism experience has the potential to become a business transaction, every new development breathes new life into our towns and cities and rural economies, and every visitor helps to create jobs. The time couldn’t be better to take tourism from the breakfast table to the world stage.

Managing Your Millennials: A User’s Guide Millennial: born between 1982 and 1995, millennial is the term used to describe the next generation of workers. WHAT ARE MILLENNIALS? Millennials are the new breed of worker. They think differently from any other type of worker. They are well educated, highly skilled in technology, very self-confident and have plenty of energy. They have grown up in a time of mobile phones, internet chat, multiculturalism and where the focus is on an individual’s rights rather than an individual’s responsibilities. There are over 80 million of them, which is larger than any other generation. By 2025, millennials will form 75% of our workforce. WHY SHOULD I CARE ABOUT MILLENNIALS? Employers can no longer expect to retain their workers for 10 to 20 years. Instead research suggests that millennials will not stay in the same job for longer than three years. Therefore if you do wish to cultivate and retain your existing millennials, it will be important to encourage and motivate them in an attempt to continue to utilise their unique skillset and viewpoints within your organisation. TIPS TO MANAGE MILLENNIALS Give them your gadgets: Millennials are not social media savvy – they’re social media sophisticated! They have grown up in a time when communication with peers comes through the forum of social media. They are the masters of digital communication and employers should utilise these talents whenever possible. Rather than giving your senior managers the latest forms of workplace gadget, give them to your millennials. They are much more likely to be able to find the benefit in new technology much quicker than your senior managers and, if asked, will likely educate the rest of your workforce as to the pros and cons of the latest gadgets. Encourage creativity: Millennials have grown up in a time where information is readily available at the touch of a button. They are accustomed to being able to get instant answers to difficult questions from google or Wikipedia. For this reason, they don’t get the same satisfaction from cross-referencing hundreds of authorities, eliminating secondary arguments and identifying the ultimate answer. Instead they find a greater satisfaction from creativity and they should be encouraged to use their creative skills to problem-solve real-life issues. This is more likely to stimulate their interest and therefore harness their potential. Form a team, as opposed to an army: Unlike previous generations before them, millennials are not accustomed to the workplace chain of command or company hierarchy. Millennials don’t care about ranking, nor do they have an automatic respect for their senior colleagues. Most millennials will dislike workplace

38

DUNDEE & ANGUS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

conflict so instead of drilling respect into a hierarchical army, try strengthening a team. If you can encourage your millennials to play a role in the team, they are more likely to be fulfilled in the workplace and work harder, better, faster, stronger. Regular reviews: Annual reviews are not effective with millennials. They need more regular feedback. They dislike fake compliments like “perfect” or “good job”. Instead they want direct criticism on why they are wrong and where they can improve. Indeed millennials have a strong desire to please and, if any shortfalls are addressed in a direct manner, this can only prove worthwhile for your company. Harness your inner Harvey Specter: Millennials are very, very stubborn and when something displeases them, they find it difficult to tell anyone other than their trusted few. Normally their concerns are valid and, for this reason, a trusted relationship with their manager is essential if you want to hear these concerns. Frequently the best managers of millennials are the ones who hold the same values and viewpoints as them. If millennials are placed with managers who they trust, their loyalty should never be doubted. As Harvey Specter famously stated, “Loyalty is a two-way street. If I’m asking for it from you, then you’re getting it from me.”

MILLENNIAL TRANSLATIONS And remember that millennials will often speak a different language to you. When they say, “That’s interesting, Si”, they mean, “Stop talking, Simon, this conversation is boring me and I want it to stop right now.” And when they say, “You’re right, Si”, they mean, “Stop lecturing, Simon, this conversation is boring me and I want it to stop right now.” And when they say, “Stop stirring, Si”, they mean, “Stop winding me up, Simon, this conversation is boring me and …” (you get the picture). Commentators suggest that millennials are often entitled, impatient and have a limited ability to take criticism. I would disagree. In my experience, millennials are adaptable, contemplative and offer a new, exciting perspective to the workplace. Millennials are our future leaders. So if you want to manage your millennials effectively, rethink the way in which you deal with them and accept that a different work ethic is not necessarily the wrong work ethic. Oh and, if you haven’t already done so, learn to speak emoji. It is, after all, the fastest growing language of the millennials!

Preparing your Business for Sale

J

ust as you would spruce up your house to attract potential buyers, taking some preparatory steps to get your company ready for sale can help to enhance and maintain the value of the business and avoid unnecessary delays during the sale process. It can be useful to look at your company from an outsider’s point of view, particularly if you have been immersed in running the business for years. What operational issues could prevent a smooth transition to the buyer? If the company is part of a group, is there anything which would prevent this from flourishing as a standalone entity? Succession issues are often a key concern for buyers, who need to ensure that management have sufficient knowledge and capability to run the business without the seller. Management also need to be prepared for the demands of the transaction, and the volume of information requested by the buyer during its due diligence process. Collating the requested documents at an early stage presents a good

impression of a well organised seller and enables the seller to respond promptly to the buyer’s enquiries. Anticipating the questions which the buyer will raise can itself bring issues to light. For example, are the assets of the business actually held in the company’s name? Are appropriate employment contracts in place, which protect the company’s confidential information and IP? Are written contracts in place with key customers and suppliers? Are there potential litigations looming, or employment disputes bubbling under the surface? Pro-actively identifying risk areas which may be targeted by a buyer may enable the seller to resolve these issues prior to commencing negotiations – or at least be prepared for how to deal with these once they arise. If the buyer is ever going to attempt to chip away at the price then it will be best placed to do so when it has unearthed a problem as part of its due diligence. It sounds obvious but make sure that you know what has been going on in your business – far better for the seller to discover any skeletons in the closet than the potential buyer!

Auto Enrolment

T

he law on workplace pensions has changed and this is having a big impact on employers. Auto Enrolment Legislation means that every employer must automatically enrol some, or all, of their employees in a workplace pension scheme. Enrolment depends on age, earnings levels etc. Some employees are automatically enrolled, some must be enrolled if they ask to be, and some might ask to be enrolled, although it is not compulsory to do so. Both the employee and employer have to contribute to the workplace pension, so the employer will have to find the money for this. The commencement of this depends on your staging date – if you are not aware of your staging date, you can find out using the Pension Regulator website www.thepensionsregulator.gov.uk or, if you have your PAYE reference handy give us a call and we can find out for you. Auto enrolment is compulsory, and non-compliance carries fines and even though employees can opt out, employers can’t. What is involved in dealing with Auto Enrolment? The initial obligations of the employer can be onerous and need to be organised well in advance of your staging date as the smaller employers’ (most of us!) stage is set for later on this year or next year. The difficulty will be with having providers that are available to cope with the volume of business and having a compliant

scheme in place in time for you to fulfil your obligations. You need to start now to ensure you are ready to go on your staging date. Ongoing obligations The ongoing obligations can also add considerably to the administration work of your payroll department and they need to be able to deal with the extra burden. Some providers will take this burden away at a cost and some will do it “free”. Conclusion We are helping our clients to meet their obligations in plenty time to ensure that they have a scheme in place and will not be subject to any fines by making sure that they are able to deal with their ongoing obligations.

DUNDEE REP

There’s Something for Everyone at Dundee REP

D

undee Rep announces its new autumn season and it is packed with productions from Dundee Rep Ensemble and Scottish Dance Theatre, alongside the best of touring drama, music, comedy and children’s shows. The first of three Dundee Rep Ensemble productions is Scottish playwright John McGrath’s groundbreaking, The Cheviot, the Stag and the Black, Black Oil. This extraordinary play looks at the exploitation and economic changes in the Scottish Highlands throughout history. Following the success of previous community tours, Dundee Rep Ensemble’s sixth community tour is Midsummer (a play with songs) by David Greig and Gordon McIntyre. This production is kindly sponsored by Balhousie Care Group – leading Scottish care provider – and will tour to community venues across Dundee and Angus during October. There is always magic in Dundee Rep at Christmas time and this year will be no exception. The third and final Rep production this season is from the world’s number one storyteller Roald Dahl. Roald Dahl’s The Witches will take to the stage from

The Fabulous Buddy Holly & the Cricketers.

DUNDEE & ANGUS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Craig Hill is back at the REP with hilarious new material.

Thursday 26 November until Thursday 31 December. This faithful adaptation of Dahl’s story by playwright David Wood, tells the tale of a young boy and his grandmother who defeat the high witch as she holds a Witches Conference at a seaside hotel. This season Dundee Rep’s Creative Learning continues to work within the local community on participatory and learning activities. Following on from the hugely successful Whitfield Giants project, Creative Learning will work towards their annual Enterprise @ The Rep project and Careers Day. Scottish Dance Theatre’s Great Big Dance Show and The Beautiful People will perform as part of the Luminate Festival. Musical highlights this season include Big Country, Buddy Holly & The Cricketers and Christine Bovill’s Piaf Centenary Tour. Hot on the heels of last year’s hysterically funny show from Craig Hill, he is back in November with his new show, Craig Hill Playing With My Selfie! And we are excited to welcome Comedian Nina Conti, who brings her monkey and her new unmissable improvised show, to Dundee for the first time in October.

For full programme details and ticket sales for Dundee Rep and visiting drama, music and comedy, call the box office on 01382 223530 or visit www.dundeerep.co.uk.
