OPENING SHOT

I

am now approaching the end of my two years as President of the Dundee & Angus Chamber of Commerce and it has been a huge pleasure to represent so many great businesses and the fantastic folk who are our members. It has been two years of continued evolution for the city and evolving fortunes for the wider region. There has been huge development in the waterfront and elsewhere in the City of Dundee & Angus has enjoyed a genuine dividend from the – until recently – buoyant offshore energy sector that dominates the North East. There has been much to give us hope.

Dundee & Angus still has not had the kind of joined up economic solution that it needs from national and local government. That is a source of much regret to me personally after two years as your President and ten years of developing property in Dundee.

There are serious questions on the economy that will weigh on our members in the year and years ahead. The downturn in the oil and gas sector is having an immediate and deep impact across the whole country. With the oil price now under a third of its peak in mid – 2014, industry retrenchment is everywhere to be seen with the collateral impacts spreading wide and deep. We can expect decommissioning of elderly offshore assets to accelerate in ever-more enthusiastic cost cutting that could provide Angus and Dundee Ports with opportunities for large-scale employment. As yet, however, there has been relatively little decommissioning activity compared to the Tyne in England and the Northern reaches of Scotland. We still

4

DUNDEE & ANGUS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

wait for the long-heralded offshore wind benefits to accrue to Dundee and the thousands of jobs expected in that sector, but there is little sign of any success there any time soon. Our further and higher education sectors, real areas of success and sources of pride in Dundee & Angus, are under threat with ever-reducing budgets and little scope to address this by increasing revenue income. Scottish Government continues to focus on the minutiae on how university rectors are selected in their Higher Education Governance Bill rather than how can they sustainably support one of the biggest success stories this country has. Naturally, much of the last few years the story has been about the waterfront in Dundee and the arrival of the V&A in 2018. Whilst this is a world-class project and huge asset for the city, I would point out that there is more to our region than one museum and on that success, hope cannot alone be pinned. The long-discussed City Deal for our region seems a very long way away indeed and, while Aberdeen has just enjoyed an emergency £540m city deal to address the oil sector decline, Dundee & Angus still has not had the kind of joined up economic solution that it needs from national and local government. That is a source of much regret to me personally after two years as your President and ten years of developing property in Dundee. So, with a Holyrood election due in May, I would echo the words of our extraordinary guest speaker at the Autumn High Noon Lunch, Ellis Watson: it is up to us as the owners of business and as creators of wealth to hold our politicians to account and to demand more than the vague vision of political rhetoric. What is to be delivered for our region and when?

Tim Allan, President CEO, Unicorn Property Group

A WELCOME FROM THE CEO BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE

016 has already seen much progress in Dundee & Angus as projects keep on building and new announcements grab headlines. The business community in our region is strong and ambitious but needs to be able to take advantage of the wider opportunities in our area in order to plan goals and strategy for their own organisations. Events like our Waterfront update, which you can read about further on in this magazine, the Dundee & Angus Tourism Conference and Opportunity Summit held on 15th March, and the summertime Dundee Economic Summit are all important events for businesses to get along to, to hear about the wider factors which effect our region and help us consider how best to get involved in the opportunities that exist now, or are coming in the future. But as much as we need to have our antenna tuned in to these things, running and being involved in a business is a difficult thing and there are many issues which serve to keep us focused on doing a good job, holding onto our customers and finding new ways to grow and sustain business performance. We must support each other and work together to ensure we have a thriving business sector, providing good employment opportunities and encouraging others to set up and grow their own businesses. With that in mind, we’ve got a packed issue for you this quarter with many business stories to share and key economic stories too – plus the relaunch of our Chamber Champion initiative…please recommend your friends and business

Our region is going through exciting times, but business can sometimes be a fragile and lonely place. Being part of the Chamber, attending events, promoting your business and celebrating success are all vital pieces of the jigsaw and we are proud and delighted to represent so many businesses in Dundee & Angus.

contacts to us – when they join it benefits everyone and you get your very own reward too. I hope you enjoy the first issue of 2016!

Alison Henderson CEO, Dundee & Angus Chamber of Commerce

“As a member of the Dundee & Angus Chamber of Commerce I find the relationships developed with other members and at member events invaluable to our business. The emotional capital local businesses invest in each other and wider afield drives growth for all Chamber members. The team within the Chamber successfully brings together all members for Dundee’s and their own mutual benefit ensuring Dundee & Angus are positively portrayed across Scotland.” Brett Davidge, Apex City Quay Hotel

“The Chamber is great place to keep up to date with what is going on in our area during these exciting times. The regular events hosted by the Chamber are always informative and provide an opportunity to meet other businesses and learn about what they do in a friendly setting. We are very grateful to the wonderful Chamber team who are always very supportive in publicising our free seminars and engaging with us on Twitter.” Jack Boyle, Blackadders

NEWS & EVENTS

An evening with 7 Scots CHAMBER MEMBERS WERE invited along to Oliver Barracks in Dundee on a cold February evening to see the Army reservists from A Company 7 Scots with many of the units of the battalion’s men and women in action. Ron Macgregor – the Regional Employer Engagement Director with Highland Reserve Forces and Cadets Association was in attendance to explain the value of having a reservist on your payroll and went on to highlight that an employer would have to purchase over £8,000 of commercial civilian training to provide the same amount of development that an average reservist’s military service provides in a year. This research relates only to the skills that are relevant to the civilian workplace. The skills and experience gained from an average period of mobilisation, including pre-deployment training, is worth around £8,300 for a Private, £14,600 for a Sergeant and £18,400 for an Officer. These statistics are astonishing but are virtually unknown by employers throughout both the public and the private sectors! The evening continued outside with demonstrations from each unit: 225 Medical Regiment, 205 Field Hospital, 2 Signal Squadron and the 105 Regiment Royal Artillery, where the members were treated to some open air theatre learning how each of the individual groups work and after the demonstration there was a chance to ask questions and see first-hand the equipment they use. A hot drink was on offer at the end of the evening and gave the members a chance to speak to all those who participated. With thanks to Captain Robert Reid, Captain Mike Dunnigan, Captain Chloe Tisshaw, Captain Lorraine Campbell, WO2 Billy Smith and WO2 Barry Seal for giving their time and enthusiasm for this military event! Have you ever considered how much added value accrues to your company simply by employing someone who is a member of our Volunteer Reserve Forces? If you want to find out more information on the reservists please email help@sabre.mod.uk or call 01382 631026. The event was filmed by Gerry Burke TV. Visit www.gerryburketv.tv to view.

Call for “In Your Shoes” Bloggers DACC LAUNCHED THE member’s “In Your Shoes” blog in April 2015 and since then a weekly blog has been shared showcasing a week in the life of various members from all walks of life and industries. Have you ever looked at our business directory and wondered what some of the organisations actually do? Or spoken to someone new at a networking event and been really astonished at the type of activities they’re carrying out from a corner of Dundee & Angus? EVERY single person we’ve met has something interesting to share and relating it in a fun way to a few pictures of the shoes they are wearing or things they do as they go about their week seems like a great way to do it! You can write your blog to cover your working week – for example Monday to Friday or Monday to Sunday, or whichever days are appropriate. You can also add personal aspects to the blog, on evenings or during the weekend. Each member is allocated a slot week by week. Get in touch now to book your slot! The aim of the blog is to inform the business community of your day-to-day activities. For example, we may think of a lawyer and assume we know what they do on a daily basis but do we? This is a behind the scenes look at exactly what you get up to every day in your own words and shoes! Each member blog is individually promoted for a week. Once submitted your blog will be launched and promoted the following Monday after submission. It will be visible on our website, shared via social media channels, featured on our newsletter “The Weekly Buzz” and included in our quarterly “InCommerce” magazine. Business Brunch highlights the importance of language skills YOUNG PEOPLE FROM 10 schools across Tayside and Fife had the opportunity to engage with local businesses at the University of Dundee on 20th January. The 140 students from S3-S5 heard from a range of business leaders who view language skills as key to the growth and success of their company. The Business Brunch demonstrated the relevance of language skills in a work context and aimed to encourage pupils to continue with their language studies into the senior phase of their secondary education and beyond school. The event was organised by SCILT, Scotland’s National Centre for Languages, in partnership with the University Council for Modern Languages (UCML) Scotland. Companies attending included Glamis Castle, Volpa and Valentine International Business Connections LLP. Schools represented were Beath High School, Blairgowrie High School, Carnoustie High School, Glenalmond College, Harris Academy, Madras College, Montrose Academy, Perth Grammar, St John’s Roman Catholic High School and Webster’s High School. Fhiona Fisher, Director of SCILT said: “Events such as these are a really important way of providing young people with high quality careers advice delivered by the business people themselves and of demonstrating to them the value of language skills in our increasingly globalised world.” Marion Spöring, University of Dundee and Chair of UCML Scotland, said: “It was great to see the enthusiasm and feel the buzz of over a 100 pupils who were finding out about the many exciting ways languages open up employment opportunities in local and global businesses. From creative and heritage industries, computer gaming and worldwide marketing – there are breakthroughs to be made and multilingual people are the key for success in business.” serving 14 years as Chairman of Dovetail. His appointment will help the management team drive the business forward and build on the success of the new brand which was launched in 2015 and the showroom which was opened in 2014. Dovetail has been investing in the expansion of their sales, marketing and customer service teams, and attending high-profile exhibitions in order to showcase their broad Furniture and Fire Door selection to the widest possible audience. Revenue increased significantly in the last financial year and with work opportunities continuing to grow, the forecast is for further expansion in 2016. The company won the Social

Impact Business of the Year award at the Courier Business Awards, highlighting their contribution to the community as a social enterprise. Commenting on the new appointment, Mr Meiklejohn said: “I am delighted Ken has agreed to join Dovetail. He brings a wealth of experience to this role and I am confident Dovetail will continue to thrive under his leadership.” Mr Laing added: “I am very excited at the prospect of working with the Dovetail board and management team to help develop the business and realise the organisation’s key aim of providing assisted workplace opportunities for those with disabilities.”

Avian’s new map has designs on Dundee BROUGHTY FERRY-BASED DESIGN agency Avian has unveiled a new mural at their studios which has been created to celebrate Dundee’s status as the newest Unesco City of Design. The map was put together by Paula Donnelly, one of Avian’s graphic designers, inspired by the London graphic work of artist Joao Lauro Fonte, as well as local artist Evan Rattray’s typographic map of Dundee. The mural features stylised typography and graphics of the city’s most iconic buildings, businesses, streets and attractions from Avian’s own home in a former church in Broughty Ferry to the Law, Magdalen Green Bandstand and RRS Discovery, as well as hometown heroes Desperate Dan and Dennis the Menace. Avian’s Managing Director Scott McCallum said: “As a design agency in a City of Design we wanted to reflect all the great things our city has got going for it. We’ve got a past to be proud of and we’ve marked that by including things like Cox’s stack and Keiller marmalade. We’ve also got a very exciting future to look forward to and at the heart of that is the V&A Museum of Design.” The map takes pride of place in the company’s reception at their studios in Brook Street, Broughty Ferry which Avian shares with its sister company Blue2, a digital design and development consultancy.

Perth Racecourse appoints its first Chief Executive AWARD-WINNING VISITOR ATTRACTION Perth Racecourse has appointed a Chief Executive for the first time in its 400-year history. Hazel Peplinski took up the new position on 1st January 2016 and has wasted no time in laying plans for the summer jump season at the UK’s most northerly course. Hailing from a horseracing background – her father John Dudgeon was a permitholder trainer and her brother Sandy a successful amateur jockey – Hazel has built an enviable reputation in Scottish racing. She’s held major positions including Chief Executive, Director, Racing Manager and Clerk of the Course at Hamilton Park, as well as further Clerking roles at both Kelso and Ayr racecourses. Earlier in her career Hazel was a Public Relations Officer for the Racecourse Association (RCA) and obtained Event Management experience in the golf and tennis arenas. Hazel commented: “The decision to appoint a Chief Executive rather than a new General Manager reflects just how far Perth Racecourse has come in the last 10 years. In what has been a difficult time for the industry, Perth has consistently bucked trends to show a solid increase in both visitor numbers and fixtures. With annual turnover now in excess of £2.5million it is an opportune time to raise the bar. “I was hugely honoured to be approached by the committee and have grabbed this unique opportunity with both hands. Having been brought up in a large National Hunt racing family, I do feel as though I’m coming home and will be proud to welcome life-long industry friends and business contacts to Perth Racecourse.”

Re-Nu nominated for Best Clinic Scotland Arbikie launches Chilli Vodka ARBIKIE HIGHLAND ESTATE, the Angus-based farm to bottle distillers, has recently launched Arbikie Chilli Vodka. Arbikie launched Scotland’s first potato vodka in November 2014 with the aim of changing consumer perceptions of vodka. The vodka has been a huge success. In just over a year Arbikie Vodka has been awarded Best Vodka at the Paris Cocktail Awards, Double Gold at the China Wine & Spirits Awards and was named one of the Best Vodkas in the World by GQ Magazine. Arbikie Vodka has now been infused with chipotle chillis grown by Scotland’s first chilli farm, Chillilicious. The vodka uses no additives or colourings in the process, making it a naturally-flavoured product. Arbikie Chilli Vodka captures the earthy smokiness of the chipotle giving the vodka an extra dimension rather than just heat. It’s envisaged the vodka will be perfect in a Bloody Mary or for the more adventurous, a Beetroot Bloody Mary. John Stirling, Operations Director commented: “It’s been a great year for Arbikie, having launched Scotland’s first potato vodka, a gin, whisky in cask and now our new chilli vodka. The chilli vodka has been a roaring success and we’ve had to make a second batch to meet demand! I’d like to thank everyone who has supported us from consumers to industry. We wouldn’t have got this far without their support for which we are very grateful.”

EU Referendum

T

he European Union is an extremely valuable market for Scottish exports, worth £12.9 billion in 2013 – the most recent year for which figures are published. That makes up 46% of Scotland’s total international exports, highlighting the importance of the EU to the Scottish economy. Currently, there is a European Union Referendum Bill going through the UK Parliament. If passed, it will commit the UK to an in-out referendum on the UK’s membership of the European Union by the end of 2017. With the potential impact that any change in EU membership could have to businesses in Scotland, the Scottish Chambers of Commerce Network carried out a business survey. This survey examined business views and attitudes towards EU reform, and the UK’s future relationship with the EU. Results from the survey show that if an in-out referendum was held tomorrow, 73.5% of respondents indicated that they would vote to remain in the EU, with that figure rising to 90.5% for large companies. Additionally, 13.5% would vote to leave, 12.5% are undecided and a balance of 0.4% would not vote. Of the 73% who would vote to remain today, half of the respondents indicated they were committed to that position, and 25% of those who would vote to leave were similarly committed. Voting preferences being in favour of remaining a member of the EU may perhaps be attributed to the negative impact which respondents believe leaving the EU would have on their business. More than half (50.2%) of respondents tell us that they believe

16

a change in the UK’s status in the EU would have a negative impact on their business. Whilst only 10.4% thought such a change would result in a positive impact. Overall, businesses in Scotland are closely engaged with the ongoing debate regarding the UK’s membership of the EU, with 72.9% of respondents following the debate through reading about it at least once every two weeks. Conversely, only 4.7% indicated that they are currently not following it. Yet, 70.4% of respondents said that they were not at all familiar or only a little familiar with the Prime Minister’s proposed renegotiation package, but with views already being formed, it is important that as much information and detail as possible is presented to business and the wider electorate. The reforms that businesses believed would have the most beneficial impact on their business, the top three were:  Reducing business regulation/ red tape (61.4%)  Changing the balance of power between Brussels and member countries (43%)

If an in-out referendum on the UK’s membership of the European Union were held tomorrow, how would you vote? I would vote for Britain to remain

I would not vote Don’t know

 Changing the way the EU budget is spent (23.1%)

Businesses in Dundee will be watching eagerly to see the developments of the debate. The Chambers Network will be ensuring that businesses and communities across Scotland will not be ignored and that the campaigners for both sides listen to the concerns and opportunities are listened too.

The importance of checking for asbestos EVERY YEAR ASBESTOS kills 4,500 people in the UK and that figure is expected to keep rising until 2030. Any building built pre-2000 may contain asbestos. All non-domestic properties must have an Asbestos Register. This also applies to domestic rental properties, such as rented flats. The Health and Safety Executive regularly prosecutes companies and persons who have failed to comply with current asbestos legislation. If you think your premises may have asbestos, you should instruct an asbestos survey immediately. There are two main types – a management survey and a refurbishment demolition survey. They should only be carried out by specialist companies who will visit the property, complete a detailed inspection and prepare a full written report. A management survey is a non-disruptive inspection where samples are taken where possible. This allows the owner of the property, or those responsible for the maintenance of the property, to assess whether to remove or manage any asbestos containing materials found in the property. A refurbishment/demolition survey is an in-depth inspection of all areas with full exposure work in the case of demolition and of areas affected on a refurbishment – i.e. ceilings, floors, etc. This refurbishment/ demolition survey gives any contractor confidence to start work without fear of contamination to their workforce or others. Asbestos has been used in countless products including electric light fittings, toilet seats and cisterns, floor and ceiling tiles and electrical fuses. It’s impossible for the layman to be absolutely sure whether asbestos is present in a product or premises. If in doubt the best and safest plan is to call in an expert. RSB Lindsays extends its charity initiative SCOTTISH LAW FIRM Lindsays recently announced its commitment to continuing the company’s volunteering initiative undertaken last year as part of its bicentenary celebrations. At the start of 2015, partners and staff were offered the chance to devote 200 hours during the working day to help community groups of their choice. The enthusiasm and commitment from across the firm surpassed expectations and resulted in 200 hours becoming 350-plus hours. The enormous success and excellent feedback from both staff and the organisations they worked with has resulted in the firm embracing corporate and social responsibility activity once again. Last year teams worked together to identify local projects they could help, then swapped their business suits for tools, paint brushes and wellingtons to support a variety of charities. The Yard at Rainbow House in Dundee, Maggie’s Centre in Kirkcaldy, Marie Curie and DACC’s own charity, the George R Donald Fund, all benefitted from volunteered help and fundraising activity donated by RSB Lindsays staff. Across Lindsays’ five offices in Scotland, over 120 people were involved and 28 projects were delivered to support 19 different charities and local community organisations. Lindsays is also delighted to announce the company has been nominated as finalists at the Scott & Co Legal Awards 2016 for the Community Contribution of the Year which highlights the work undertaken across the firm as part of their charity initiative. The awards ceremony is on 24th March in Edinburgh.

Easter holidays could mean contract disputes for employers

TAYSIDE SOLICITORS MILLER Hendry are warning employers they could leave themselves open to employment contract disputes if they fail to take account of how the Easter holidays fall this year and next. As Easter falls in March in 2016 and April in 2017, firms with holiday entitlements that stretch from April 1st to March 31st could be accused of short-changing employees over their statutory annual leave. Miller Hendry is urging employers to check the wording of their employment contracts to avoid any possible disputes with employees. Whether or not employers need to change employment contracts will depend on how their contracts are worded. Contracts with wording to the effect “20 days’ holiday plus eight public holidays” are a cause for concern, whereas contracts which include public holidays within the stated holiday entitlement are not. Alan Matthew, partner and employment law expert at Miller Hendry, explained: “This is a quirk of the calendar and how Easter falls differently every year, but it’s a serious issue. As a result of Easter being earlier this year, employees may have the opportunity to take two Easter holidays within one holiday year. This is, of course, providing that their local area considers Easter Monday and Good Friday to be public holidays which not all do. “Technically employers have a few options to avoid possible breach of contract, the simplest of which may be to consider permanently amending employment contracts so that holidays run from January to December or are worded to be inclusive of public holidays.” For further advice or information on employment law or other legal issues, visit www.millerhendry.co.uk

New Northern Division for Hardies HARDIES PROPERTY & Construction Consultants, one of Scotland’s largest multi-discipline surveying firms, recently appointed Darron McKay of the Dundee sister company WJR Christies as one of 11 new partners. Darron and 10 other colleagues were selected following a vigorous internal selection process to find the stars of the future for the firm which has 14 offices across Scotland. Darron will be heading up a new Northern Division for Hardies, consisting of the Hardies offices in Dundee, Perth and Aberdeen. He said: “I am extremely pleased to have been chosen to head up this new division. Hardies is an excellent company to work for and I look forward to being part of driving the company forward strategically along with the other partners. We have a very strong, positive and forward thinking team. Ultimately, the plan for the whole company, including the Northern Division, is for all of our offices to work more closely together to offer our clients a cohesive and dedicated professional service. “We appoint the best people for a job within Hardies regardless of the geographic location, so it’s not unusual for our colleagues through in the west of Scotland to be working on something in the Borders or for colleagues in Fife to be working with clients in Perth or Dundee – but overall we still provide excellent geographic coverage across Scotland with 14 offices. “We have a new Associate Building Surveyor in the Aberdeen office so we want to promote this office and the new teams in place to build a consensus for the future. In Aberdeen we have also been appointed to the Aberdeenshire Council Framework for Building Surveying.” Throughout Tayside and Fife the company is involved with projects for NHS Tayside where they have also been appointed to the Framework, at Dundee High School where they are providing Quantity Surveying for the new centre for Creative Arts and at the new Equipment Testing Centre for the R&A at Kingsbarns. Other projects include the harbour in St Andrews for the Harbour Trust and at Abertay University where they are finishing a long-running project. Darron also outlined the role he thought new technology would play at Hardies in the future saying: “We are continually introducing new technology at Hardies with BIM (Building Information Modelling) coming in to use with key personnel currently undertaking appropriate training. BIM is going to play a significant role in the coming years and as a firm we have to be ready.”

GS GROUP

GS Group S continues to build on its successes in Dundee

22

DUNDEE & ANGUS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

ince they opened in City Quay in February 2013, GS Group have been delighted with the progress made by their Dundee branch. As they celebrate their second anniversary in the city, GS Group Managing Director, George Stubbs, is bullish about the next phase of growth. Offering both insurance broking and financial planning services, the branch now employs five people with more in the pipeline as their growth continues. “We saw an opportunity in the market, to bring our service-led proposition to Dundee and the local market has responded magnificently. From a standing start, we generated premium income in excess of £1 million in our first year in Dundee. We’re just doing the sums on our second year, but I’m expecting to record similar growth.” Since the company was founded by George Stubbs in 1991, GS Group have grown to become one of Scotland’s largest independent insurance brokers. With 6 branches across Scotland and over 50 local people employed, they have built their reputation on long standing values of trust and expertise whilst developing relationships that stand the test of time and industry development. Across Perth, Glasgow, Dundee, Falkirk and Aberdeen, GS Group offers a wide range of services to corporate and commercial clients, including risk management, health and safety compliance and loss resolution. “We are the only

PLATINUM PARTNER

GS GROUP independent broker to offer this mix of services,” said Mr Stubbs. “It’s our business to make sure that our clients stay in business, and we do that by taking time to properly understand what they do and the risks involved. With our extensive relationships in the insurance world, we are then able to deliver solutions that meet our clients’ needs at a price that often surprises. Ultimately, our goal is to deliver peace of mind.” The Dundee office also offers a Financial Planning service, led by Fiona MacKenzie. Covering all aspects of wealth management for both corporate and private clients, Fiona has steadily built a client base in the city. “Being able to offer a financial planning service to our insurance clients means that we are able to add more value. Having both services from GS Group also makes it easier and the feedback from clients in Dundee to this has been incredibly positive.”

2016 marks a very exciting year for GS Group as the company celebrates its 25th year in business TO MAKE THIS a truly memorable year, the company will be holding a number of charitable events throughout the year with proceeds going towards the Yorkhill Children’s Hospital, the Scottish Air Ambulance and SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy). This charity initiative continues after an incredibly successful year of fundraising throughout 2015, where several members of the team grouped together to take on the Ben Nevis Challenge in September. With the challenge including a combination of a 12-mile climb, a 15-mile cycle and a spot of kayaking, the team managed to raise a grand total of over £9,000! This would not have been possible without the extremely generous contributions made by clients, insurers and friends and family of the team. “It’s important to me that we put something back into the communities that we work in,” said Mr Stubbs. “We make a point of employing people from the local community and offer a lot of flexibility in our working arrangements. Our over-riding principle is delivering for our clients, so as long as that gets done, then that’s my number one priority.” It’s a refreshing approach and one that’s not common in the old-fashioned world of insurance broking, however it’s seen GS Group blaze a trail that shows no sign of slowing down. During 2015, the company completed two acquisitions that not only added significant new business to the Group, but also secured some outstanding people. “People are the heart of our business,” said Mr Stubbs. “We are in the people business. Insurance isn’t a product that you can see, touch, or feel. So much of what we do is about relationships, so having people that understand that and go the extra mile for our clients, is really important to me.” GS Group closed out 2015 by becoming Platinum Partners of the Chamber. We’re delighted to have such a progressive, forward-thinking company join our Partners and we’re excited to see how this relationship develops in the years ahead. If you’d like to speak to someone at GS Group about your insurance or financial planning needs, then either give them a call on 01382 202605 or email insinfo@gs-group.uk.com

DUNDEE & ANGUS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

WATERFRONT UPDATE EVENT 2015 DUNDEE & ANGUS Chamber, along with event partners Dundee City Council and V&A Museum of DesignDundee, held an event in December 2015 to update 150 businesses on the Waterfront and V&A projects. Mike Galloway, Director of City Development and Philip Long, Director of V&A Dundee, presented updates giving insights into the developments which will see Dundee’s Waterfront regeneration show some very physical and exciting changes in 2016. The £1bn transformation of Dundee City Waterfront, which encompasses 240 hectares of development land stretching 8km alongside the River Tay, is a strategic, focused and forward looking 30-year project (2001-2031) that is propelling the city to international acclaim. The vision for the Waterfront is: “To transform the City of Dundee into a world leading waterfront destination for visitors and businesses through the enhancement of its physical, economic and cultural assets.”

significantly to the regeneration of the city itself.“ The overall project will create some 7,000 jobs and is said to be well past its halfway point, with more than £600 million already invested. More private investment in the project, to the tune of £400 million over the next 10 to 15 years is expected, provided the surge in interest currently being seen from developers bears fruit. The new V&A Museum of Design is one of the flagship projects included in the waterfront's regeneration.

FEBRUARY 2016 ANNOUNCEMENT OF NEW DESIGN AND INNOVATION QUARTER PLANS HAVE BEEN revealed for a new Design and Innovation Quarter as part of the £1bn Dundee waterfront regeneration. The proposals include studio, workshop, retail and living space for the creative industries, with the aim of retaining graduate talent in the city. Developer Our Enterprise has been selected by the city council as the preferred partners for the scheme on plot 2 of the central Waterfront area. Founder and chief executive Matthew Bell said: "We are a young, innovative development and regeneration company with a difference. We care about delivering projects with a social return and the highest levels of economic and environmental sustainability. Dundee’s vision for the waterfront is a perfect match for us and we are thrilled to bring our investment, energy and drive to this ground-breaking project." The building, spread over two blocks and designed by award-winning architects HTA Design, will include three main elements. The bottom floor will comprise Design, Make and Sell units in a bid to attract business to the city and another floor will offer small, flexible spaces for creative start-ups. In the floors above there will be highend homes for rent, including shared facilities such as large dining areas, a cinema room and a gym. Another floor will offer commercial office space.

The fact that this project is largely supported by local contractors, engineers and apprentices is something we should be proud of.

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon visited the area on 18th January 2016 to inspect progress. Ms Sturgeon said: "The progress we have seen on this infrastructure work is a testament to good project management and support from the wider local community and businesses. Scotland has a proud tradition and enviable global reputation for engineering excellence, built on the skills and innovation of our people, making it an attractive location for business investment. “The fact that this project is largely supported by local contractors, engineers and apprentices is something we should be proud of. This project itself has created hundreds of local jobs and contributes

The wind power sector could also deliver a major economic boost if the giant Neart Na Gaoithe, Inch Cape and Seagreen offshore wind arrays – which all lie within the outer Firths of Tay and Forth – are built. Mr Hammond was upbeat and said his firm’s investment would ensure Dundee was ideally placed to benefit when the work did begin to flow. “The port’s existing skills base and location, combined with its riverside berths, deep water and rock river bed put the port in a key position to become a hub for these sectors for construction, operations and maintenance and for decommissioning,” he said. Confirmation of the quayside investment came as Forth Ports revealed the facility had seen growth during 2015, including handling a record 60,000 tonnes of barley. The Port has also seen a recent increase in cruise business and 10 passenger vessels are due to stop off in the city this year, an increase on the six of 2015. The company said it expected its cruise offering to develop further as the central waterfront and V&A Dundee design museum project came to fruition in the coming years. Alison Henderson, CEO of Dundee & Angus Chamber said: “The impact of these massive capital projects on business in our region will be dramatic and the

Tomorrow's Talent is a resounding success

C Thomson and Alliance Trust are big on growing local talent. We’ve been supporting employability skills initiatives in a number of Dundee secondary schools for the last two years. Ellis Watson, CEO Publishing, DC Thomson, said, “In 2015, we wanted to do something special; we wanted to reach ALL of the schools in our area, so Tomorrow’s Talent was born. It’s about passion, commitment and community. It’s about local businesses taking an active role in supporting local young people as they take their first steps into work. Tomorrow’s Talent is about investing in our young people to equip them to succeed in the workplace, today and in the future.” Now that DC Thomson and Alliance Trust have completed Tomorrow's Talent 2015, we’re taking a moment to reflect on a really successful programme and share the results with the wider business community. A lot went into creating Tomorrow’s Talent 2015; consultation with education providers, pupils and teachers; bespoke theatre design and creation; and a custom-made website with CV hints and tips, useful interview techniques and links to support materials online. In order to help the pupils develop skills, build confidence and realise their potential in life after school, we ensured that the employability skills programme brought everyday scenarios to life. With the help of professional actors, the workshops helped demonstrate what to do – and what not to do! Our staff members also provided insights into their business experiences, sharing what has worked well for them in their career and what they might do differently if they had a second chance!

DUNDEE & ANGUS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Throughout the month of September we carried out the 90-minute interactive sessions and, from November, we offered work placements to some of the pupils who had been involved. Those who took part in the placements were given the opportunity to try out some of the skills learned at the sessions as they were required to go through an interview process to fill the week-long placements at DC Thomson and Alliance Trust.

Here are the results: 39 Workshops 20 Days 234 Hours of volunteer time 100 Volunteers 11 Schools across Dundee, Angus, Perth and Kinross 1,140 Young people

What the pupils thought: 52% Awesome 41% Good 5% Okay 2% Rubbish It’s great that 93% of participants responded positively so we’re now working to develop 2016’s offering. We’re keen to improve the process and add greater value for the pupils and for our staff members. The expansion of GSK manufacturing site at Montrose shows no sign of slowing down, with construction and recruitment continuing at an unprecedented rate at the Angus-based facility.

SK is a science-led global healthcare company with a mission to help people to do more, feel better and live longer. The vaccines, medicines and consumer healthcare products that we research and develop can improve people’s health and well-being, ultimately helping them to live life to its fullest and contribute to the prosperity of their communities. Established in 1952, the Montrose facility manufactures the active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) for some of GSK’s topselling products including asthma medicines Seretide® and Ventolin®; and products in the company’s successful HIV portfolio.

GSK Medicines that contain Montrose components are taken by a staggering 20 million people around the world every day. Two major new production facilities are in an advanced stage of construction. A £40m facility which will produce sterile components for 70% of GSK’s vaccines is set to begin initial production runs this year, while our 45-year history of producing active ingredients for the company’s respiratory medicines is set to continue with the new API facility. Built at a cost of £35m and set to begin manufacturing early in 2017, the API facility will produce three ingredients which will be used in our groundbreaking new respiratory treatments using the new Ellipta® device. Supporting the site’s manufacturing capability and drive towards ever-increasing quality standards, a new custombuilt facility for dispensing raw materials and final products was officially opened this month by the President of GSK’s manufacturing organisation, Roger Connor, who described the new facility as “incredible”. There is more to GSK Montrose than new buildings. 2015 saw record volumes in some areas. For example, production of abacavir sulfate, the active ingredient in many of GSK’s HIV therapies, achieved a major milestone in 2015. Through a number of improvement initiatives, the site has more than tripled the annual output of abacavir sulfate over a five-year period, making over one hundred tonnes of the material last year. This will make enough critical HIV treatment for approximately half a million patients every single day. Investment in plant and processes is only part of the story at GSK Montrose. The real key to success is the people. The changes the site is undergoing require highly-capable people and the team at Montrose is rising to the challenge. From the start of 2013 to the end of 2016, we will create over 150 new jobs. We also continue to invest in younger talent through our apprenticeship programme which is currently looking for the best young talent that the Dundee and Angus area has to offer.

Supporting our new and existing staff is crucial. Our rigorous training programmes ensure that all of our people are confident and competent to work in the highly-regulated pharmaceutical manufacturing environment. Above all, we ensure that our people live our GSK Values of trust, respect for people, integrity and patient focus. Society expects the highest standards of us. was lucky enough to be brought up in the stunning countryside of Angus and anyone who lives in the Dundee & Angus area will know we’re surrounded by some of the best food and drink producers in the world. This is increasingly being recognised both across Scotland and globally. The 2015 Scotland ‘Year of Food and Drink’ which showcased our amazing, world-class produce to the world helped business, like our drinks business Arbikie grab the attention of buyers from across the Europe and the world. Fundamental to this success was our provenance, as both buyers and consumers recognised the authenticity of a local drinks producer creating innovative products that use only our own farm-grown ingredients. The momentum of the Year of Food & Drink has continued into 2016 with consumers very happy that their food is increasingly traceable, so they are able to know both how and where their food was produced and by whom. They are now increasingly demanding this with their drink and this creates a great opportunity for businesses across the region.

onstruction is a dynamic, rewarding profession for any young person to enter and at Robertson Tayside we are acutely aware of the benefits of nurturing and developing the next generation of talent. The UK construction industry is facing a nationwide skills shortage, with media reports suggesting 21,000 new recruits are needed over the next five years to replace an ageing workforce. The recession took its toll on construction and a generation of potential recruits was effectively lost. As the largest contractor in Tayside, we take responsibility for reminding young people that the industry is an attractive career choice, with lots of opportunities for progression. The value of impressing this on our younger recruits cannot be underestimated – several members of our senior team started as apprentices with Robertson and worked their way up the ladder. Robertson has engaged with more than 13,000 young people in the past year while also providing 185 work placements. More than 80 per cent of our operations benefit from a local supply chain, with over 85 per cent of that work coming from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Whether in building, joinery or plumbing, we want to continue giving local people the skills to succeed. Robertson Group has 34 apprentices aged from 16 to 28 learning their trade

and that is something we are determined to build on, for both our and our sector’s future. The construction industry in Tayside has not been trouble-free but we were pleased to be able to expand our operations in Tayside and establish our new Dundee office, filling the void left by Muirfield Contracts’ demise in 2015. Opening Robertson House at Camperdown Industrial Park in October last year was a proud moment for us. Now home to 60 staff across construction, facilities management and special projects divisions, several members of our team had been working for Muirfield at the time of the company’s closure and we were pleased to be able to protect these local jobs and prevent essential skills leaving the

area. Our new office may only have been open for a short while, but already we have a bustling order book. Turnover for Robertson Tayside exceeds £60m and we are in the midst of several key projects. Education forms a key part of Robertson Tayside’s workbook, with the £30m construction of a new campus for Harris Academy in Dundee and the £25m Brechin Community Campus among the contracts set for completion. Primary school staff and children in Dundee will be looking forward to moving into the new Sidlaw View campus later this year. The two-storey building will provide a safe, modern learning environment for 400 pupils, as well as offering 70 full-time equivalent nursery places. Our specialist teams are also working on delivering Baldragon Academy, as well as schools in Forfar and Arbroath. Further opportunities will become available for Perth and Kinross as we prepare to commence some significant projects, such as Perth Theatre and two new Perth primary schools. In preparation for this we are working with Perth and Kinross Employability Network to ensure people are aware of the opportunities and services Robertson provides. The construction industry may have changed a lot and Tayside is no exception, but with a healthy workbook and our keen emphasis on youth development, we are looking forward to a period of stability ahead.

The importance of Project Management

F

or those who haven’t watched the BBC’s ‘The Apprentice’ TV show, each week the candidates fight to be the ‘Project Manager’ in the hope that it’s their time to shine and impress Lord Sugar, and each week as the task evolves, sparks fly, bad decisions are made and the projects generally fail. Most haven’t had any project management training or understand what is involved in order to keep a project on track. Is this why The Apprentice has never had a certified and experienced Project Manager candidate? Perhaps it adds to more exciting viewing to see it all go wrong! Project management is one of those things that looks easy until you try it. The fundamentals of managing a project from start to finish require a team of individuals with different talents and skills. Those people are responsible for planning and executing the project objectives and that takes more than just labour and materials. A sound project plan can mean the difference between success or failure. Each project follows a Project Life Cycle. It’s a hard skill to master, but well worth learning. And here’s why: 1 Defines a plan and organises chaos – projects are naturally chaotic. The primary business function of project management is organsing and planning projects to tame this chaos. A clear path mapped out from start to finish ensures the outcome meets the goals of your project.

34

DUNDEE & ANGUS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

2 Establishes a schedule and plan – without a schedule, a project has a higher probability of delays and cost overruns. A sound schedule is key to a successful project. 3 Enforces and encourages teamwork – a project brings people together to share ideas and provide inspiration. Collaboration is the cornerstone to effective project planning and management.

Project management is one of those things that looks easy until you try it

4 Maximises resources – resources, whether financial or human, are expensive. By enforcing project management disciplines, such as project tracking and risk management, all resources are used efficiently and economically. 5 Manages integration – projects don’t happen in a vacuum. They need to be integrated with business processes, systems and organisations. You can’t build a sales system that doesn’t integrate with your sales process and sales organisation. It wouldn’t add much value. Integration is often key to project value. Project management identifies and manages integration.

6 Controls cost – some projects can cost a significant amount of money, so on-budget performance is essential. Using project management strategies greatly reduces the risk of budget overruns. 7 Manages change – projects always happen in an environment in which nothing is constant except change. Managing change is a complex and daunting task. It is not optional. Project management manages change. 8 Manages quality – quality is the value of what you produce. Project management identifies, manages and controls quality. This results in a high-quality product or service and a happy client. 9 Retains and uses knowledge – projects generate knowledge or at least they should. Knowledge represents a significant asset for most businesses. Left unmanaged knowledge tends to quickly fade. Project management ensures that knowledge is captured and managed. 10 Learning from failure – projects do fail. When they do, it is important to learn from the process. Project management ensures that lessons are learned from project success and failure. These reasons and many other factors are why companies employ people with project management skills. Perhaps The Apprentice should follow suit?

Dundee & Angus Convention Bureau: Supporting Business Tourism

B

usiness tourism is responsible for generating over £12m of direct expenditure in Dundee & Angus, attracting more than 225,000 visitors to the area and generating over 42,000 bed nights. The total economic impact of business tourism is estimated to be worth over £61m to the region. The figures are impressive, but what is it that makes business tourism different from leisure tourism? It involves supplying facilities and services to delegates whose trip to a specific area is because of a meeting, conference, event or as an incentive. It’s a particularly lucrative market and one which the Dundee & Angus Convention Bureau continues to grow and develop. It is widely agreed within the meetings industry that business events are a driver of economic growth, particularly in service-oriented economies that are seeking international trade and intellectual engagement to progress advantage in the Knowledge and Creative aspects of their economy. The Convention Bureau team works closely with local businesses and partners, as well as VisitScotland Business Events to position Dundee & Angus on a national and international stage by promoting the area’s centres of excellence and its extremely creative and culturally diverse sectors. Through the Dundee & Angus Conference Ambassador Programme, the bureau will continue to support ambassadors who are academics and leaders in their field working at the universities or The James Hutton Institute to draw more professional associations to consider hosting their next meeting in Dundee & Angus, Scotland. Since the launch of the programme in November 2000, more than 200

conferences have been hosted in Dundee & Angus, worth over £36m to the local economy. “The city has been growing in stature for decades,” says business tourism manager Karen Tocher. “And the increase in business tourism visitors to the city for conferences continues to reflect this. The new developments and the step-change in Dundee’s confidence as a city will bring even more events in forthcoming years. Interestingly, our recorded international delegates in 1998 for the whole year could fit on one 32-seater bus. In 2015, we had over 20,000 international delegates and we’d now need 600 buses for them all. We only see this number growing exponentially in the coming years. These figures are only going to increase, as an estimated 500,000 new visitors are expected to visit the city when the V&A opens in 2018 “Dundee proved its capabilities to run complex international events with the highly-successful isamDUNDEE2015 Congress. This four-day conference was attended by 619 international delegates from 56 countries with a scientific programme which included 45 workshops, 250 presentations and 10 keynote lectures as well as a welldeveloped social programme. “Delegates were telling me that they thought the Toyko ISAM2014 conference was good,” says Professor Alex Baldacchino, isamDUNDEE2015 Congress President. “And they followed up by saying that Dundee was ‘beyond good’. In fact, it was the best they have ever been at.” More information about Dundee & Angus Convention Bureau can be found at www.conventiondundeeandangus.co.uk.

Prepare Yourself for the PSC Register What business owners need to know about the upcoming changes to Company Law. legal entities who ultimately own or control more than 25% of a company’s share or voting rights, or who can otherwise exercise significant influence or control over a company and its management. Where a company has no person with significant control, a PSC Register is still required and should confirm that there is no relevant person or entity.

What is the PSC Register? From April 2016, most companies in the UK will be required to maintain a register of “persons with significant control” (“PSC Register”). The concept of the PSC Register was introduced last year and is aimed at improving transparency in UK companies by identifying their ultimate beneficial owners. Similar measures will be introduced across Europe under the Fourth Money Laundering Directive from June 2017. Who needs to keep one? All private limited companies registered at Companies House must have a PSC Register from April 2016, and from 30 June 2016, must send details of their PSC Register to Companies House annually with its confirmation statement (which replaces the previous Annual Return). For any application to register a new company, a statement of initial significant control must be filed at Companies House at the point of incorporation from June 2016. A PSC Register is not required from PLCs or other similar entitles that trade on a regulated market within Europe. Who is a “person with significant control”? A company’s PSC Register should identify individuals or relevant

What should be included? Details of personal information for individuals are required (like name, address, and date of birth). For legal entities, details of company name and number, registered office and relevant company register will be required. In all cases, details of the nature of control exercised should be included and where the control relates to holding of shares or voting rights, the general extent of the holding should be detailed. What is the impact of the new requirement? Unfortunately for existing companies, the introduction of the PSC Register will mean additional paperwork as they collect the required details from individuals or legal entities. Some companies may find this difficult where it is not clear who the ultimate beneficial owner is. For new companies, it is likely to be easier as relevant questions can be asked from the outset. Companies should contact relevant individuals and/or legal entities for the information required for the PSC Register. There is also a proactive disclosure obligation on individuals and legal entities to provide such information to companies (even if it is not requested by a company). If information is not provided, companies can impose restrictions on any shares or voting rights held. While there are criminal penalties for failure to maintain a PSC Register, the most effective way to prevent non-compliance is likely to be the threat of restrictions on shares or voting rights. Why is this so taxing?

T

he Land and Buildings Transaction Tax (LBTT) (Amendment) (Scotland) Bill was introduced to Parliament in January 2016. Following similar proposals introduced by Westminster, the Bill introduces an LBTT supplement on second homes. The intention is to help first-time buyers as well as preventing any distortions in the market. The changes will take effect from 1 April 2016 and will apply to transactions settling on or after that date. A “second home” is any property purchased by either an individual or a couple which is not a replacement of their main dwelling. The additional tax will be payable where the purchase price exceeds £40,000, at the rate of 3% of the total price. The buyer is deemed to have replaced their main dwelling where they have sold in the last 18 months prior to the effective date; where they have not already sold but do so in the period up to 18 months after the effective date, then the tax can be reclaimed. This applies to all properties owned by the buyer, including those outwith Scotland. In the case of married couples, the additional tax applies regardless of whether title to any of the properties is taken in joint names. Parents who take title to property in the name of

Where the buyer is a company or other non-individual, even if they own only one property, the supplement is payable. The rationale behind this is to avoid situations where an individual may choose to take title in the name of a company for the sole purpose of tax avoidance. Tell-tale signs of a suspicious email Email threats are on the rise, with the senders of such emails constantly finding new ways to cause damage.

W

hile anti-virus and anti-spam solutions are a must for all businesses, end users are still the last line of defense. Providing your employees with some basic training can be the difference between a good day and a really bad day. Bank fraud and ransomware are often targeted via email. Here are a few things to think about before opening an email. Do you know the sender? If not, be on guard. Even if you do know the sender it’s still worth being on guard as the sender’s email may have been compromised. Is the email unexpected? It's not uncommon these days to receive an email out of the blue – but it is best practice to ask yourself these questions before you open any unexpected email. Does the content relate to your role within the business (bank transfers, invoices etc.)? If it’s from a big company (banking, iTunes, PayPal, Dropbox, UPS etc.) do you subscribe to their services? If anything seems suspicious, it is better to be safe than sorry. Is there an attachment on the email? If there is an attachment on a suspicious email always double check points 1 and 2. If you are in any doubt do not open it. Business should not send attachments in Microsoft Word format as they are easily edited. UPS do not send additional information in Zip files. If your email has an attachment that you were not expecting, be on guard. Are there any links in the email? If you’ve got this far and are still not sure there is one last thing to check. Links in suspicious emails can look legitimate but are not. Hover over the link in the email... if the address does not match the content of the email or shows anything different to what it should then do not click on it. Most importantly, if you are not sure it is better to be safe than sorry. Ask a member of your IT team! They would rather provide you with two minutes of advice than spend hours dealing with an infection.

ANGUS ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Growing Developments at Orchardbank Business Park Now with Superfast Broadband

“A

ngus is open for business,” said Alison Smith, head of Angus Council’s Business Angus team. “It’s no wonder so many highly-successful international, national and local businesses are investing in and relocating to Angus.” Angus has a growing, exciting and expanding economy, supported by a skilled, flexible and motivated workforce, an envious quality of life and an excellent selection of competitivelypriced property and land. There are excellent transport links with good road and rail networks, a deep water port, nearby airports and there is good availability of schemes and grants to assist with relocation, further investment and development. “Our Business Angus team aims to attract investors in Angus, to grow and strengthen the local economy and deliver a complete solution to business investment needs through enthusiastic and knowledgeable advisors in a way which is responsive to the investors requirements,” explained Alison. A current focus for growth is the Orchardbank Business Park which has been developed by Angus Council in partnership with the Muir Group. Orchardbank has a prime location adjacent to the A90 dual carriageway and will benefit from the installation of a new dedicated broadband service and service provider for business residents. Angus Council is in the process of installing a wireless broadband distribution network to provide high speed, low latency and low contention business grade internet access for all businesses on the estate. Working in partnership with Rapier Systems, a specialist in wireless technologies, a superfast Internet connection has been sited at Angus House at Orchardbank. This will provide a business-grade wireless internet access for all businesses on the park. The highly-controllable system is managed by Rapier Systems, providing speeds from 10 Mbps up to 100 Mbps, including the ability to turn on, upgrade or downgrade bandwidth, all within hours not months. Alison Smith stated, “This innovative project is great news for existing businesses at Orchardbank who are now able to access High Speed Broadband and will also help encourage businesses to locate in the park. It’s fantastic to see Orchardbank become one of the leading digitally-connected parks in Scotland.” Attractive for development due to its strategic location adjacent to the A90 dual carriageway with access via the Glamis junction, which gives excellent access from all directions for cars

42

DUNDEE & ANGUS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

and heavy vehicles. The site is highly visible from the A90 and over 20,000 vehicles per day pass the location which is only 15 minutes by car from Dundee and only 45 minutes from Aberdeen and in excess of 600,000 population lives within a 45-minute drive. Orchardbank Business Park has a definite competitive advantage compared to competing development sites in closer proximity to Aberdeen and Dundee. Land prices and other occupational costs are lower but the location still allows good access to city areas and their markets. It is an ideal location from which to serve both cities and the wider Scottish markets. The business park has already attracted international high profile occupiers such as McDonalds, KFC and Marston’s. A full range of occupiers includes Angus Council (Council headquarters), Guide Dogs for the Blind (Scottish head office and training centre), Oilfast and Astute, with a number of other sites under offer. The available development sites are capable of being connected to utilities as extensive infrastructure, roads and service work has been undertaken to create a unique business environment. The development strategy in the Angus Local Plan specifically aims to support this area of development land for business and employment uses. Opportunities have been identified in the Angus Local Plan for roadside services and hotel accommodation and also for office, commercial and general industrial use (classes 4, 5 and 6). Currently there is a range of plots available for sale and it is still possible to secure a site with frontage onto the A90. Plots range in size from approximately 0.5 acres and have been efficiently configured to allow maximum flexibility, to ensure that most development size requirements can be met by either combining or splitting plots. Orchardbank offers an attractive environment for occupiers. It is adjacent to Forfar Loch Country Park within easy reach of the town centre and it has been sympathetically landscaped and includes a cycle and footpath that runs through the business park and connects to the footpath network in the Country Park. Forfar is the administrative centre of Angus and it is a thriving market town with commercial occupiers including Strathmore water and Don & Low. Forfar and Angus in general also offer an enviable high quality of life without suffering the higher costs and other disadvantages associated with big city living. The wider Angus area has a diverse geography and, like its landscape, work opportunities are diverse and offer great opportunities across the country and beyond. For more information on Orchardbank, the broadband development and further investment opportunities, contact Elaine McCarron of the Business Angus team on 01307 476414 or by email at McCarronE@angus.gov.uk.

Auto Enrolment Introduction of Employer Charges.

T

here have been some changes with Auto Enrolment providers in the market place and this has seen the introduction of charges to the employer that have not previously been levied. The position may (and more than likely will) change in the future, but we summarise below the latest position for the main providers our clients deal with:

NOW Pensions Further to communication issued by NOW Pensions on 24 November 2015, a charge is to be placed on employers and will apply to new auto enrolment clients from now on. There is a discount for employers who sign up through our Payroll Bureau service. The rates are as below:

• Employers going directly to NOW pensions (instead of being signed-up through a payroll bureau) will be charged £36 per month plus VAT

• Employers with five or more employees being processed through a payroll bureau will be charged £20 per month plus VAT

• Employers with up to four employees being processed through a payroll bureau will be charged £12.50 per month plus VAT

The People’s Pension For new clients who sign up to The People’s Pension from 23 November 2015, a one-off employer set-up charge of £500 plus VAT will apply. There is a reduced charge of £300 plus VAT for employers who sign up to The People’s Pension via a business adviser or financial adviser (like Walker Dunnett & Co). There will be no ongoing charges for employers. This means The People's Pension maintains the 0.5% annual management charge for members.

NEST Pensions NEST currently offers the most cost-effective auto enrolment option with the minimum administrative burden. This is partly due to the fact that NEST is completely free for employers and in a recent press release, dated 24 November 2015, NEST confirmed they have no plans to introduce an employer charge. There is no guarantee that the position outlined by NEST in November will not change in the near future, due to a number of factors within the pensions industry. To find out more about Auto Enrolment and the latest information, please contact Elaine Irons in our Dundee office on 01382 224221 or email eirons@walkerdunnett.co.uk www.dundeeandanguschamber.co.uk Member Helpline 01382 228545

Dr Mhairi Towler Vivomotion

Business owner is animated about Vivomotion’s success After several years working in scientific research, Dr Mhairi Towler realised there was a gap in the market for an animation service that would help scientists in academia and industry bring science to life.

“I had lots of support from a number of organisations and my Business Gateway adviser helped to guide me through the startup process. There is so much to think about so it helps having advisers who can offer an external unbiased view on the business.

With support from Business Gateway, Dr Towler launched Vivomotion (www.vivomotion.co.uk) in 2012 and four years on the award winning business is racing along with a client list that includes academics, biotech companies, clinicians and science centres.

“I also attended Business Gateway’s free workshops, which gave me a good grounding in practical business skills, and I have great business mentors, Scott Brady and Janet Wilkinson.”

“Through the medium of animation, stories of science are literally ‘brought to life’, allowing visualisation of the previously unseen, whether for conference talks, marketing or educational purposes,” said Dr Towler. “Previously we only offered 3D animation, but we have increased our services to include 2D animation as well as a suite of training workshops that can be delivered at various Universities.” With a wealth of science skills, qualifications and experience there was no doubt Dr Towler had the foundations in place to launch her business however, she also realised early on that some specialist business advice would help to get her venture moving.

Download our free business support app.

Now that the business is well established, Dr Towler is looking to the future. “Planning ahead I suspect I will look to Business Gateway for some additional support. Ultimately I would like to trade globally, while drawing on the local talents within the life science and creative industry sectors that Dundee is famous for.” To find out how Business Gateway can help you, visit www.bgateway.com/tayside or call your local office directly on 01382 843 016.

ADVERTISING FEATURE

A PROMISE BY THE NATION.

Major General Nick Ashmore and Professor Nigel Seaton with the signed Covenant.

Defence Employer Recognition Scheme recipients met the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street.

The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise by the nation, ensuring that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, are treated fairly.

The Covenant has just been rebranded and now has a clear visual identity. So why not publicly declare your commitment to our Armed Forces by signing up? In doing so you would be among the first UK companies to show your support. Minister for Defence Personnel and Veterans, Mark Lancaster, said: “Armed Forces personnel and their families make many sacrifices through their service to keep Britain safe. They can face challenges accessing commercial and public services that we take for granted, so the Armed Forces Covenant is a promise from the nation to ensure that the Armed Forces community is treated fairly, and recognise their particular challenges.” Signing up to the Covenant is straightforward and sets companies on the path to further recognition for their pledge in the form of the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS). The scheme encourages employers to support defence and inspire others to do the same. The prestigious Bronze, Silver and Gold awards are for employer organisations that pledge, demonstrate or advocate support to defence and the Armed Forces community, and align their values with the Armed Forces Covenant. The ERS awards culminate annually with ceremonies to recognise the efforts of the Silver and Gold award winners. The Silver winners were thanked during a dinner at Edinburgh Castle’s Great Hall while the Gold award winners were recently invited to meet the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street where he showed his gratitude for their support. One of the first 2016 signatories to the new-look Armed Forces Covenant was Dundee-based Abertay University which put pen to paper at a ceremony organised by Highland Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association. The Association acts as the interface between employers and Armed Forces Reservists.

Professor Nigel Seaton, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Abertay University, signed the Covenant at a passing-out parade for the Tayforth University Officer Training Corp (TUOTC) at Barry Buddon Camp, near Carnoustie. Major General Nick Ashmore OBE, the Army’s senior officer in Scotland, witnessed the signing. Dundee-based Abertay is the first university in the UK to sign the Armed Forces Covenant in its new form (introduced in early 2016). Eight other UK universities are signatories to the Covenant in its earlier form. Professor Seaton said: “The Covenant sets out the obligations that the UK owes to the members of its Armed Forces, who sacrifice some civilian freedoms and can face danger while in service.” For more about the Covenant and what it means for you, visit www.gov.uk/government/policies/armed-forces-covenant. You can also contact Ron Macgregor, Highland Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association’s Regional Employer Engagement Director, on 01382 631026 or email hi-empsp@rfca.mod.uk.
