Businesses in the Lothians are by definition resilient. The economy has suffered downturns and setbacks throughout our history. We’ve learned the hard way that the best way forward is to rely on local initiative and to develop our own enterprises. However the process becomes more difficult when even the Government puts barriers in the way of economic growth. Reports are becoming too common to ignore of pressure being put on local businesses by HMRC. There now seems to be a UK policy of giving no leeway to small businesses if they are experiencing cashflow problems and are late with payments due to HMRC. In the past it was possible for businesses to liaise with their tax offices to make arrangements to deal with periods when cash was tight. Growing a business inevitably generates periodic fluctuations in flows of money. If the economy is to grow, we have to expect businesses to need flexibility. The UK Government claims to be helping businesses in the private sector. The policy needs to be made clear – have HMRC been given a directive to be “tough” with SMEs? If they have, then this is a real “bully boy” tactic and questions need to be asked: Why are the big boys allowed leeway? Does the Government really want SMEs to grow? If they have not, then make the policy clear and allow our local businesses to flourish. Our Corporate Partners

Feed-in Tariff Reductions to be postponed until March A government appeal to bring in early reductions on feed-in tariffs to solar panel installations has been dismissed by the High Court. The decision means the new lower subsidy levels will be imposed on panels installed from 3rd March 2012 instead of the earlier 12th December 2011 which the Government had hoped to impose. While controversy still remains over the new reduced subsidies, which could see up to a 55% cut in payments for new solar PV installations, the High Court ruling allows a brief respite for businesses and homeowners who are currently considering investing in small-scale renewables. The Energy Saving Trust has a comprehensive guide to the feed-in tariff scheme which can be on http://www. energysavingtrust.org.uk/Generate-your-own-energy/ Financial-incentives/Feed-In-Tariffs-scheme-FITs

Low-Carbon Transport Loan Interest-free loans from £500 to £50,000 are now available from a new fund that the Energy Saving Trust is establishing on behalf of Transport Scotland. These loans are intended to help all organisations including government, businesses and the public sector play their part in moving towards a low carbon economy. They will help organisations reduce their transport emissions and therefore support the policy aspirations in the Scottish Government document Low Carbon Scotland: Meeting the Emissions Reduction Targets 2010-2022 defined as: driving more efficiently; widening travel choices and reducing the need to travel. These interest-free loans are intended to help you save money through the measures they support and any organisation wishing to undertake a programme to reduce its costs by improving travel and transport operations is eligible to apply. Improving the sustainability and efficiency of transport and travel arrangements can generate significant real cash savings as well as reducing your carbon footprint.

What can the loan be used for? Loans can be used to meet the installation cost of a wide range of measures including for example cycle storage or video-conference facilities, engine control units or lowemission vehicles. A wide range of other options can also

Green Transport Grant Extended to Van Users in 2012 Scottish SMEs could benefit greatly from UK Government plans to extend their green transport grant to electric and hybrid light commercial vehicles in 2012. Under these plans, businesses could realise savings on eligible vans of up to £8,000. The Department for Transport (DfT) announced the new Plug-in Van grant along with plans to fund its Plug-in Car grant until 2015. This new scheme hopes to encourage an increase in the uptake of electric vans, which lags behind electric vehicle purchases due to their limited availability. However, with hybrid and electric commercial vehicles becoming more widely available, business and private consumers will have a greater choice of electric commercial vehicles. To find out about Plug-in Van grant, including eligibility – visit the http://www.dft.gov.uk/topics/ sustainable/olev/plug-in-van-grant/

be considered and the most cost effective measures will vary for each organisation. To help identify and scope the most effective programme of work EST is also offering a free Sustainable Transport Review, which can be followed by more in-depth consultancy. This consultancy can also be funded as part of a loan application.

How to find out more This is an exciting new development which, we believe represents a significant opportunity for any organisation to make real reductions in operational costs and improve effectiveness. To find out more, or to arrange for an assessment for your organisation call your local Energy Saving Scotland advice centre on 0800 512 012 and ask to speak to a specialist advisor about a low-carbon transport loan. This is in addition to the interest-free Small Business Loan for energy efficiency and renewables – more info on this visit : www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/scotland/Businessservices/In-depth-energy-advice/Small-business-loans For more info on the Low-Carbon Transport Loan visit: www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/scotland/Transport/ Business/Low-carbon-transport-loan

Funding available for green business The Green Business Partnership is now offering funded environmental assistance to small and medium-sized enterprises across Edinburgh, Lothian’s, Fife and Borders. Companies often do not focus on either their resource efficiency or their environmental impact. This new service provides free assistance to help SMEs take steps to address these aspects of their business and often results in cost savings through no and low cost initiatives. This can take many forms including: • • • • • • •

Carbon footprints Waste and water reviews Energy audits Gap analyses for various accreditation schemes Sign posting on to other forms of assistance Development of adaptation plans Answering any environmental questions businesses may have

Moving On and Letting Go Passing on the family business to the next generation is very often a sensitive topic and one that can give rise to tension and friction among family members. Situations like this can have a direct impact on the business. Those who have gone through the process will be (perhaps painfully) aware that the very mention of succession can bring out the best, and worst, in families. There needs to be a steady hand to guide the family if both family and the business are to emerge relatively unscathed. There are different aspects of succession of course, management and ownership succession being two key areas. Management succession is often thought about simply as who makes the key decisions and who takes charge of the purse strings? For a family business, where the ‘emotional capital’ needs to be factored in, it’s about much more than that. The people side of things is what will pass on the commitment between generations for continued growth and prosperity. Ownership succession may lead to friction and acrimony, particularly over who gets what and in what proportion. Often equality, purely in terms of size of interest, needs to give way to a consideration of those who value the business and are prepared to contribute to making the most of that value. While the business will have a financial value, this may not be easily accessible. The real value to the family may lie much deeper; the return for effort put in. Control can also be an issue, with those actively involved in the business perhaps being best placed to be given it. In many situations equality of treatment of children becomes the focus (where only some may be engaged in the business) and there can be merit in a separation of control and ownership. Trusts can have a role here.

For the business owner, succession can bring fear of losing control or next generation failure (or even that the next generation might be more successful). A point will come though when delaying the handover is no longer an option. Early planning can, therefore, reap dividends. Fears can be dispelled by introducing the next generation early, grooming future management while bringing in fresh ideas and energy. It could also enable a staged retirement plan. Opening up to discussions on succession can often bring to the surface issues that, until that stage, had not been fully aired. Those differences will be reconcilable … in most cases. If not, facing up to them can lead to a need to consider the sale option for the business. Not easy but often it is necessary to explore, if only to conclude that it isn’t a real option at that stage. While it should never be the sole factor that drives the family to a particular course of action, rest assured, tax considerations are never far away. Planning ahead will be key if best use is to be made of the available reliefs for capital gains tax and inheritance tax. Historically, many business owners have simply allowed their interests to pass on death, free of capital gains tax and inheritance tax. However, by taking that inactive approach, what they may also pass on to their beneficiaries are the unresolved succession issues that are peculiar to family businesses. Battle may well commence after the reading of the will. There is much to mull over to ensure the continued prosperity of the business, which often supports the family in many ways. It’s never too early to start. down the Rabbit hole… So at Simple HR we have been learning about the “Google Algorithm” which is a pesky thing indeed! Working with our SEO guru has been amazing, interesting and it must be said a little daunting. For example I had no idea that if you have just a web site, Google practically ignores it; it has taken a lot of work to get onto the first page and even then for just one phrase. Our Office Manager has really thrown herself into this; Arlene has been blogging, tweeting, face booking and has learnt so much in such a short length of time. With Google analytics you can see where people go on your site, how long they stay and what interests them and organically evolve your web site, and using our new emailer software we are able to give our clients more of what interests them. We have experimented with pay per click and adverts on Linked in and we have been surprised how easy and controllable it is and how quickly it drives traffic to our site. We have learnt about back linking and article writing, so if you want to be our friend go to SimpleHR.co.uk. So a big thank you to Arlene, Callum, Mhairi and Kerry for all your work and effort – I really should tweet this… www.simplehr.co.uk

a step ahead of the competition? Secure

All placements on our EPP programme have environmental outcomes or impacts so whether you are looking to reduce your waste, water, energy or carbon footprint, communicate your green credentials or achieve ISO14001 accreditation we can help you get there. The programme runs all year round with a focus on summer placements.

your place in the market? Or to become more Environmentally Sustainable? If any of these sound familiar then our year round Bright Green Placements can help you. Our Step Classic, Graduate Step and Environmental Placement Programmes have been enabling businesses to improve their competitiveness, reduce costs and improve processes for more than 10 years. In 2011 we helped place students and graduates to assist companies to improve their environmental awareness and save money, increase their presence in the market, implement new websites and software and develop new products. Our Bright Green Placements team can help your business develop a project, source excellent candidates to carry out the project and manage the placement for you. You don’t even have to employ the students and graduates as our programmes are Work Experience Placements so we contract with both the candidate and your business. As well as helping your company develop, all of our programmes also offer a very low risk, cost effective way for you to engage with Scotland’s brightest students and graduates from Universities across the country.

Encap Drug Delivery came to our EPP programme as they wanted to take on a student to help them work towards their ISO14001 accreditation. Based in West Lothian, Encap are a global contract manufacturing and development organisation and the world’s number one company for liquid and semi-solid capsule products. Encap chose José Celeiro, a Masters student with his degree in Renewable Energy and Environmental Management from the University of Abertay, to work with them. During his placement José worked on carrying out an Environmental Review of the business before conducting an ISO14001 Analysis to compare the requirements of the standard to the company’s environmental management system. As a result of the placement Encap are hoping to achieve their ISO 14001 Accreditation towards the end of this year and also offered José a full time job to manage it along with the environmental management system.

Our placements now run year round so whether you are looking for a student or graduate, full time or part time, now or in the summer, our programmes will offer a solution to help.

Step Classic Programme Our Step Classic placements have been running through the UK for over 23 years placing undergraduate students with companies to carry out projects from Marketing and Business Processes to Engineering, Website and Software Development and Communications. One company who has benefited from the Step Classic Programme over the years is BioScience KTN. The Biosciences KTN is a not-for-profit organisation that is focused on promoting and supporting the conversion of bioscience knowledge into innovative agricultural, food and industrial bioscience products and processes for the benefit of businesses, the economy, the environment and society. Since 2004 BioScience KTN have had a range of students working with them to help with a variety of projects. This year they had Lucy Stewart, a Physiology student from Edinburgh University working with them on the promotion and marketing of their new website. As a result of Lucy’s placement BioScience KTN have increased membership on their website and also improved their social media profile through Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook. They also saw the need for the continuation of Lucy’s role and took a graduate on following the placement to help keep up the good work.

Graduate Step Programme Our Graduate Step programme helps businesses engage with some of the best talent from Scottish Universities. We can place recent graduates with your company to work on 12-24 week placements throughout the year.

Kenny MacFadden, 2010 National winner for Most Enterprising Environmental Student

Home Insulations Scotland took their first graduate through our Graduate Step programme on in January. Home Insulations Scotland is based in Livingston and is Scotland’s leading cavity wall and loft insulation specialists. They also work in the renewable energy sector installing technologies such as solar panels and biomass heaters. They have taken on Nicola Kelly, a Glasgow Caledonian University graduate with a degree in Business Studies to look at their Accounts and Costing procedures. The project is going well so far and Billy Taylor from the company says: “Nicola has settled in very well with our current staff set up and the Graduate Step placement is working well. She has also adapted very quickly to our ever changing business programme and has been a worthwhile investment. Due to the success of the placement I am sure we will be considering extending Nicola’s time with Home Insulations Scotland when we do our review.”

Marketing support mechanism for your business I’m sure you’ve heard it said that marketing’s not a department – it’s the job of everyone in a business. For example, you probably have your receptionist or staff answers the phone with a message ‘designed’ to convey the tone and character of your business to your callers. Whatever the actual message, the sub text (hopefully) goes something along the lines of “We’re a professional company who care about you, value your custom and we’re nice to do business with”. The whole point of which, is to create a great first and lasting impression. And I’m sure you’ve also trained all your staff how to look after (not handle) customers in a similar manner – those who interact directly with them every day as well as those who do not.

so, where does graphic design fit into all of this?

the rest of it with MS Word or MS Publisher then get your website done by your sister’s lad who’s pretty good on the computer. The end result can be a mash-up of styles that don’t quite gel and it probably shows – especially to customers. Smaller operations and start-ups can get away with this for a while but as the business grows (if it grows) it’s very likely to get even more out of control. With this approach owners often can’t stand back far enough to see the negative affect it has on their business. Customers probably won’t say anything because they don’t really care. But the business owner should care. You see, all those customers who don’t care – really do. They just don’t know it, but they show it by not coming back and going to your competitors instead.

Well, if done properly it should be there, doing the same thing - creating a great first and lasting impression.

The price of getting it right vs the cost of getting it wrong

It acts (silently (for the most part), as a support mechanism to your staff’s marketing efforts while they go about doing their job. Think of it as your silent receptionist, setting the tone visually, showing how professional you are and imparting a sense of confidence to your customers.

The price to have your branding professionally designed might, at first, appear expensive but any business owner who wants to be effective in a market place full of other confident looking companies has to show the same brand awareness.

For most companies, this design constitutes their branding – their logo, colour scheme, website, brochures, stationery, and so on. I say ‘most companies’, because it’s not always the case.

Commissioning a graphic designer to create your branding is an investment in the future success of your enterprise and should be viewed as such. After all, you may have to live with it a long time, alternatively, getting it wrong might mean you won’t! Therefore, spend what you can and try not to skimp on this one.

If you’re a small enterprise it’s really tempting to engage a graphic designer to produce your branding on a piecemeal basis. You get the designer to do the ‘important’ bits and DIY

Boat Trips

A great day out with a difference customised to your requirements!

If you can’t afford it all at once, that’s fine, just choose a designer that feels right for you, ask them to do some basic designs to get you going – only the stuff you absolutely need right away (logo, stationery etc.). You can always add to it as you need to at a later date. The important thing here is to stick with the same designer and resist the urge to engage in DIY.

The Braveheart is available for hire by the hour from North Berwick Harbour for parties of up to 11 people: • SIGHT SEEING • BIRD WATCHING

I know this sounds like piecemeal again but the difference here is that by using the same designer on your journey, you’ll help to maintain a consistency in your branding. This in turn will improve customer confidence, which is after all, what most people need in order for them to buy from you.

Record Breaking Export Success Scotch Whisky exports reached a record high in 2011 – despite the global recession. The good news was announced by Paul Walsh, chief executive of Diageo, as he stepped down after four years at the helm of the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) in December. “It has been a great pleasure and a privilege to chair the SWA over the past four years,” he said. “As the latest export figures show, the industry is enjoying a tremendous period of growth around the world, making it one of the most important manufactured exports the UK produces. That growth is also helping drive investment by the industry in Scotland benefitting both the UK and Scottish economies.” Scotch Whisky earns £125 every second for the UK balance of payments and the value of exports over the nine months from January to September 2011 amounted to almost £3 billion – up 23 per cent on the same period in 2010, according to the SWA. During Mr Walsh’s time as chairman, the industry, which employs around 10,300 people, invested more than £1 billion in its production and manufacturing capacity in Scotland. Since 2009, landmark regulations have provided more robust legal and consumer protection against fake whisky. These ensure that Scotch Whisky must be wholly matured in Scotland and not elsewhere and that is labelled correctly to reflect its origins. From November 2012, single malt Scotch Whisky must also be bottled in Scotland. Scotch Whisky has also achieved extra legal protection as a ‘geographical indication’ in many markets, including China and India, which means it is recognised as a product that can only be made in Scotland.

. Protecting the integrity of scotch Whisky The SWA has a new chairman as it gears up to celebrate its centenary in 2012. Ian Curle, chief executive of the Edrington Group said: “I am delighted to be taking over as chairman of the SWA at a time when the Scotch Whisky industry is in confident mood. Scotch Whisky is an iconic product and it will continue to be a prime asset and export for Scotland and the UK.” He vowed to work to protect the integrity of Scotch Whisky across the globe and to build on its export success. “With the support of governments at home and abroad to achieve fairer taxation and reduction of trade barriers, the industry can reach even higher levels. The European Union is vital to this work.” He added that some future priorities for the SWA include completion of the negotiations between the European Union and India on a Free Trade Agreement which would reduce the onerous 150 per cent import tariff. Also that in the UK, a change in the current duty regime which sees Scotch whisky being taxed more heavily than other drinks, is long overdue. He said that discrimination in the home market undermines the industry’s efforts overseas. Mr Curle has been with The Edrington Group – producers of the Famous Grouse – since 1986 and has been its chief executive since 2004. Pierre Pringuet, global chief executive of Pernod Ricard, takes on the role of vice chairman of the SWA.

It is sold in 200 markets worldwide.

It sells three times more than its nearest rival whisky.

Scotch Whisky Tourism Boosts Economy Whisky distilleries and visitor centres bring international tourists to Scotland boosting the economy and jobs market. A survey commissioned by the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) revealed that the industry adds £30.4 million in value to the economy and provides 640 direct and indirect jobs. It highlights the fact that nine out of 10 distillery visitors come from beyond Scotland, with almost two thirds from outside the UK. The report also identified a ‘distillery effect’ where tourism and cultural clusters formed in whisky production areas. Campbell Evans, SWA director of government and consumer affairs, said: “Scotch Whisky and tourism can be seen as the perfect blend and complement

one another. Our survey shows the scale of the economic impact of Scotch Whisky and how exports can help drive up tourism. Spending by tourists, and the jobs created as a result, is injecting new money into the Scottish economy.” On average, every £100 million of Scotch Whisky exports are associated with £20.6m of direct tourism spend. With exports of more than £3bn, it is estimated this brings in around £640m of direct tourism spend to the economy. China is one of the fastest growing tourist markets for Scotland and whisky was the Scottish product most commonly known and cited by potential Chinese tourists. Mr Evans added: “We’ve found countries which are the biggest export markets for Scotch Whisky tend to spend more on tourism in Scotland.

“At the same time, in countries where the number of tourists to Scotland increases, we see a willingness to pay more for a bottle of Scotch Whisky. It has a wide role to play in attracting overseas tourism.” To maximise the link between Scotch Whisky and tourism, the industry, hospitality sector and public agencies created the Scotch Whisky Embassy network in 2003. The network includes hotels, golf courses, bars and restaurants which meet specific quality criteria. It has added £43.2m to the economy and created almost 1,400 jobs. www.scotch-whisky.org.uk

Scotch Whisky Visitor Facts •

Laphroaig Distillery Visitor Centre on Islay received visitors from at least 61 different nationalities from June 2010 to May 2011, including Germany, Sweden, US, Netherlands, Denmark and Canada. Diageo distilleries welcomed 43 different nationalities last year with Germany, France, the US and Spain being in the top five, alongside the UK. The Scotch Whisky Experience in Edinburgh has seen an increasing number of visitors from growing export markets, such as China and Russia. The ‘distillery effect’ is thought to have created around 6,750 jobs across Scotland in sports, recreational and cultural industries and for businesses providing accommodation, including hotels and guest houses. Ask the Expert

Do You Own Your Domain Name? As the owner of a small business start-up you may have bought, or are thinking of buying, your own website hosting package and company domain name before consulting a web designer. This is great because it means you can start using a business linked email address without necessarily having your website up and running. Unfortunately, there is a potential downside. Most small businesses have fairly minimal web requirements in their early days. It’s therefore tempting to take advantage of the deals that website hosting companies have on offer – especially those that give you a free domain name of your choice with the package. And on the face of it, this sounds great! However, beware! There are hosting companies out there who consider the name as part of the package. Which can mean that if you decide to move to a different host provider you may discover you don’t actually own the domain name because the host company registered it to themselves. With .co.uk addresses, you can get help from Nominet (www.nominet.co.uk). However, with other address types (.com, .net, etc.) your pretty much on your own if the hosting company decides to be awkward. If your domain name is particularly important to your business, make sure you can take it with you if you want to switch providers or alternatively, register it separately in the first place – just to be sure. VisitScotland has already secured allocations for more than 6000 hotels rooms across Scotland for the Ryder Cup but up to 12,000 are needed to satisfy demand. Official accommodation and ticket packages don’t go on sale until autumn 2012. Umbrella organisation, Golf Tourism Scotland (GTS), has been building both its membership levels within the industry and its public profile with the aim of raising Scotland’s golf tourism game. Its chairman, Lee Derrick, is in no doubt as to the value and significance of the sector: “Golf tourism is important for the economy in Scotland and will continue to have a growing importance. “ However, we cannot sit on our laurels and GTS is committed to returning Photo of Lee Derrick courtesy of Golf Tourism Scotland. Scotland to being the number one choice of the domestic and international golf tourist.” Golf tourism is a major contributor to Scotland’s economy and is estimated to be worth close to £220 million annually according to a key 2009 report commissioned by Scottish Enterprise. This sets out an ambitious vision for Scotland to be the world leading golfing nation by 2020. As a result of the Ryder Cup, Scotland is investing heavily in international marketing activity. VisitScotland has a dedicated marketing programme which targets golfers throughout the UK and in key international markets across the world. The aim is to have the highest number of people playing golf per head of population by 2020 and to have the most comprehensive player pathway to develop golfers from entry to elite levels in the world. Specific targets include having a minimum of two Scots in the 2013 European Solheim Cup team and 2014 European Ryder Cup team, seven Scots in the top 100 in the world in men’s and women’s amateur and professional golf and to grow the value of golf to Scotland by 25% from its 2008 level. www.rydercup.com/2012/europe www.golftourismscotland.com www.visitscotland.com/ryder_cup.aspx

Gleneagles Voted Top Golf Resort

The prestigious Gleneagles Hotel was crowned Scotland’s top golf resort and hotel by a leading industry publication – and is now looking forward to hosting the 2014 Ryder Cup. Thousands of golf enthusiasts from across the UK voted in the inaugural Today’s Golfer Travel Awards, held in conjunction with a major golf travel operator. Awards were given across 12 categories and honoured the best clubs and courses in Spain, Portugal, France, Ireland and the UK. Stuart McEwen, Gleneagles’ director of golf, said: “We are delighted to be named Scotland’s best golf resort, an honour which is testament to the hard work of all of the Gleneagles team. “With the current, extensive upgrading work taking place on the PGA Centenary Course, the recent refurbishment of the Dormy Clubhouse and the opening of the Blue Bar, it’s an exciting time at Gleneagles and we’re very much looking forward to the future and the challenge of hosting the Ryder Cup in 2014.” Gleneagles is home to three championship golf courses – the King’s Course, the Queen’s Course, and the PGA Centenary Course, which is the venue for the Ryder Cup matches from 26 to 28 September 2014. This year, the final counting event on the 2012 European Tour International Schedule for players aiming to qualify for the Ryder Cup team next September – the Johnnie Walker Championship – takes place from 23 to 26 August. Sponsors and official event partners Diageo are looking forward to welcoming some of world’s best golfers to the Perthshire venue.

Nairn Golf Club Hosts Curtis Cup

Photo of 16th hole at Nairn by Mark Alexander.

For the first time The Nairn Golf Club – which celebrates its 125th anniversary this year – will host the Curtis Cup 2012

The countdown has already begun to the biennial contest between women amateur golfers which takes place from Friday 8 to Sunday 10 June at what is considered one of Scotland’s top courses.

As a result, it has played host to a number of blue-ribbon events including the Walker Cup in 1999, the Scottish Amateur Championship in 2006 and the Seniors Amateur Open in 2007.

Nairn was recently ranked ninth best in Golf World’s Top 100 Golf Courses in Scotland based on the judging panel’s assessment of aesthetic appeal, routing, conditioning and historical significance.

Shona Malcolm, chief executive of the Ladies’ Golf Union, added: “The friendliness and support of The Nairn Golf Club members, and the world-class standard of the course, means the 37th match is already shaping up to be a memorable occasion which will more than meet the objectives of the Curtis Sisters – ‘to stimulate friendly rivalry between players and strengthen the ties of goodwill between the nations’.”

Curtis Cup teams consist of eight players and a non-playing captain representing the USA, Great Britain and Ireland. “The Curtis Cup embodies the spirit of competition and friendship that golf is famed for, so to have such a tremendous event played over the historic links at Nairn will be something to savour,” said Graeme Govan, marketing convener for the club. Known for its celebrated greens, the 18-hole Championship Course which overlooks the stunning Moray Firth coastline has been sculpted by a host of golfing legends including Archie Simpson, Old Tom Morris, James Braid and Ben Sayers.

People without professional qualifications can be excellent practitioners in many areas of business and industry, however, credible professional qualifications are an endorsement of both qualifications and real world practical experience not to mention a real opportunity to boost your earning potential. Associates are encouraged to join the professional institution most appropriate to them. This will open up networking and educational opportunities as well as enabling associates to start on the path of gaining professional recognition. Chartered status, however, could not simply be achieved by passing an exam, these exams have to be bolted onto evidence of application in the Industry, requiring proof of knowledge and professional experience. The experience associates gain by working on their project can count towards the professional experience requirement. Striving for accredited qualifications demonstrates a commitment to the profession and provides clients/ customers with reassurance that they are receiving a professional service. They also act as a unique selling point over less qualified competitors. Local colleges are a great place to start learning about professional qualifications, which can often be completed within a year. In this edition, Iain Summers from Santander and a Board Member for the West Lothian Chamber writes to let us know about Santander’s innovative Breakthrough Programme designed to support growing businesses across Scotland…

Breakthrough is a programme of funding, business support, events and consultancy which will help high-performing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) leap to the next level of sustainable growth. These businesses are vital to the creation of wealth and jobs, however, many SMEs find it difficult to secure funding and support. The aim of Breakthrough is to identify a group of Growth Champions who can best use the programme’s funding package and events to accelerate their growth to become the next generation of world-beating innovative companies. These are businesses that have advanced beyond the startup stage and need the financing, resources and knowledge base to work towards the next level.

Growth Fund Despite the essential role that high-growth SMEs play in the UK economy, conventional funding options – equity markets, private investment etc – often fail to meet their needs. Many equity markets are geared towards investment in large businesses with a long track record of proven returns and this means many SMEs have had to look at other options for funding in the past. So a central component of the Breakthrough programme is the Growth Fund, which will see Santander invest £200 million in fast-growth SMEs over a period of four to five years. This money will help stimulate businesses and in the process create jobs and help kick-start private sector recovery. The Growth Fund brings the appropriate type of mezzanine, non-equity financing to enable these businesses to continue their stand-out growth. It will focus on rapidly growing businesses with an annual turnover between £500,000 and £10 million and will help them grow even more quickly.

Business support In addition to the Growth Fund, Breakthrough includes a comprehensive programme of relevant and practical business support experiences: • Live events featuring key speakers from Santander and high-profile entrepreneurial businesses. At these events, business owners can learn from one another’s experiences whilst also gaining invaluable insights from those who are one or two steps further up the growth curve. The events involve keynote speeches, workshop sessions and open networking. • Safari Tours to ultra high-growth companies. Safari Tours provide a select group of entrepreneurs with a unique under-the-hood view of innovative companies with a proven track-record in rapid growth, including direct access to their top executives.

• Trade missions to key overseas markets. On trade missions to selected countries, business owners can learn how to break into these new markets, unlocking their higher growth potential and forming vital export relationships. • Enternships – entrepreneurial interns. The Breakthrough Enternships initiative provides Growth Champions with access to a network of top university graduates who are available for three-month funded work placements. It’s a mutually beneficial partnership, with graduates gaining invaluable experience in the workplace, and SMEs accessing talented and ambitious graduates. • Responsible business check-up and consultancy in association with Business in the Community (BITC). This will ensure Growth Champions achieve sustainable growth over the long term.

Breakthrough in action Breakthrough was launched in Scotland at a Live event in Glasgow in November 2011. A further event is planned for Edinburgh later in the year with many more Live events taking place around the UK, stimulating Growth Champions from all regions. The Breakthrough Safari Tours are well under way with visits to Google and LoveFilm. Delegates have gained money-can’t-buy access to senior executives at these companies to learn how they can apply hard-won lessons to their own businesses. The subjects covered so far have included cash flow, recruitment and managing scale. More Safari Tours are planned throughout 2012. A trade mission to Brazil was run in November 2011 providing delegates – from industries as diverse as fashion and offshore oil and gas – with unique contacts and opportunities in this fast-growing and dynamic market.

Could you be a Growth Champion? Do you think you’ve got what it takes to be a Growth Champion? Do you have a business with a turnover between £500,000 and £10 million and strong, demonstrable growth in turnover, profitability and/or employment over the last three years? If the answers are ‘yes’, and you would like to be considered for the Breakthrough programme, please contact Iain Summers for further information on contact tel 07884 113838 or E Mail iain.summers@ santander.co.uk You can also find out more about Breakthrough, and sign up for our e-newsletter by visiting www.santanderbreakthrough.co.uk

Business Mentoring Scotland Programme Take Three Mentoring Business Mentoring Scotland Programme is introducing a new initiative that offers extra flexibility to businesses during this difficult economic time.

STEED

Having had several years of delivering group mentoring, which delivers good results for those involved, this new service provides a natural wedge to fit between 121 mentoring and Group mentoring.

Bespoke Tailors Est. 1995

Gents made to measure suits starting from £695 and made to measure shirts from £75. Gift Vouchers Available For further details call Edwin on 01228 599555 www.steed.co.uk

How will this mentoring style work? Any business that has a turnover of £100K, with potential growth of up to £250K over a three year window can take part. It allows three businesses to work with one mentor for up to a maximum of 12 months, following the format of 121 mentoring, with meetings on a monthly basis to discuss business related issues. However, unlike 121 mentoring, Take Three mentoring has a level of flexibility depending on the businesses needs. If there are numerous business needs they will need to meet monthly, but it may be that bi-monthly would be more suitable. This will be managed by participants of each Take Three Mentoring group.

Benefits of Take Three Mentoring This scheme allows a high degree of flexibility. For example it could entail targeting specific sectors for Take Three Mentoring and leadership support if there are common issues for the businesses to tackle. It could also cover the situation where there are three people within one larger company who would benefit from access to a mentor – for example a finance manager, an HR manager and an operations manager could come together with one mentor to try to develop their roles within the business.

7 Junction Street, Carlisle 12 Savile Row, London

Alternatively it may be three businesses at different stages who can all benefit from greater understanding of each other’s approaches.

Your Company Business File, What is it and Why is it Important ? By David Peace, Chespond Business & Careers Services

David Peace, Director of Chespond Business & Careers Services, having been trained by an Ex European Director of one of the main credit agencies, offers an insight into the rarefied world of the credit analyst and the credit industry. David believes that if businesses have a better understanding of how the credit sector works, then they can prevent some of the damage that incorrect ratings causes to their companies.

Jumping forward to the mid 1800s, credit management was an accepted reality but the methodology of assessing credit worthiness was far more civilized and very different to today. You were not actually assessed on whether or not you had money, as there was no way to find that out. You were assessed on your character. •

Did you drink or womanise

If we start with a brief historical review, this will help explain how the credit industry has become such an established and important fact of modern business.

Did you use profanity or take the Lords name in vain

Did you attend church and observe the Sabbath

The Evolution of the Limited Company Since the earliest recognizable companies in the 1300’s businesses were mainly run by owners and there was a high risk for investors. If you invested £1 into any enterprise, you became liable for all debts of that enterprise. With the repeal of the USERY ACT in 1862 the way was paved for a new type of business – The Limited Liability Company which would limit the liabilities of any investor. Now, invest £1 and all you could lose was £1. Investors would not be held to account for the debts of the business. Entrepreneurs with no money could now raise it and run a company. In the 10 years after 1862 a staggering 6,200 Limited Liability

Companies were formed The Companies Act of 1948 paved the way for the modern day version of the Limited Liability Company allowing Directors and Shareholders Limited Liability. Companies were, however, still required to produce annual accounts, undergo annual audit and filing at Company House for all to see was compulsory. Even in 1977 many businesses relied on trust, however, recession hiked bad debts and killed trust and this, not surprisingly, created an increased demand for credit checking. Nowadays you would not reasonably expect to be able to open a business account with a large company without being vetted in some manner. Credit Management is now mainstream, widely understood to be needed to protect a vital asset – namely debtors.

History of the Credit Agency Records indicate that as far back as the 1700s 92% of business was conducted on credit. Credit has been the most influential factor in commercial growth since business began and, where credit exists, then someone has to be able to judge credit worthiness so enters the CREDIT ANALYST. THE Mid, East & West Lothian

38 CHAMBERs OF COMMERCE MAGAZINE

SPRING 12

In the larger towns and cities most merchants knew who to trust in terms of extending credit. Once travel became easier and common place, mainly through the rapid expansion of the railways, customers seeking credit from merchants in the more frontier towns had unknown histories. Thus groups of merchants requested information from the cities on which businessmen not to trust and this developed into credit agencies. In 1841 Lewis Tappan created a commercial credit service. Then RG Dun (R.G. Dun Mercantile Agency) was incorporated by Tappan’s grandson in 1859. It later merged with Bradstreet’s Credit Service to form Dun & Bradstreet, a name still well known today and this is the development of what we recognize as the modern credit agency.

The Modern Development of Abbreviated Accounts Up to 1980 every limited company in the UK was required to file full audited accounts including Full Profit & Loss Account, Balance Sheet and Detailed Notes to the accounts. However, post 1980, The European Charter on Filing Regulations for Small Companies removed the need for audit of annual accounts for qualifying companies. The 1986 Companies Act set the turnover threshold for a Small Company at £150,000 but in the 2006 Companies Act, that threshold had been raised to £6.5 million and now over 91% of UK Limited Companies fall into this category. If annual turnover is less than £6.5 million and you file abbreviated accounts (aka audit exempt) then an analyst is deprived of seeing Turnover, Profits, Losses, Dividends, Costs, Detailed Creditors and Detailed Current Assets. Thus, an analyst has no idea if the company is growing or shrinking and cannot determine if the business is making profits or losses. Basically, with the removal of almost all that is needed to determine how strong or weak a business is how can an analyst set the right limits? It’s impossible!

What is your Company Business File? Holding up to 49 feet of information, the Company Business File is what modern credit agencies exhibit to anyone who does a company search on you. It includes your annual return to Companies House and is the basis upon which banks, suppliers, customers and other companies make their assessment of your company and decide whether or not to do business with you. Very few Business Owners or MDs are aware of the impact that their Business File has on their business, even fewer have actually seen what is in it. Managing Directors should be, and will be, conscious of the effects of credit but few are conscious or even aware of just how many businesses engage in Vendor Vetting (seeing the Business File). •

All Government bodies and offices are compelled in law to vendor vet

All banks and financial institutions now must vet for Money Laundering

Over 40 % of larger businesses vendor vet as standard (this number is growing all the time and smaller businesses are following suit).

So the state of a company’s Business File is very high on the agenda of almost everyone that company deals with.

What impact does This Have on the Mds Company ? In 2009/2010 there were just over 11 million searches on Limited Companies through Company House (nearly 12 million searches in 2010/2011) Add those made through Credit Reference Reports (about another 11M) and that is a lot of searches on a total of only 2.4 million active companies.

The estimated 22 Million business checks may see the MD’s company as being; •

Loss making when they are actually making profits

Non credit worthy when they are credit worthy

Much smaller and not worth trading with

Less stable and so not worth buying from

High risk so not worth lending to, not worth investing in and/or not worth partnering

If your company looks insolvent, non profitable, loss making or very small it will have a negative impact on;

Trade Credit Supply

Non Trade Credit Supply (e.g. Buying phone systems and utilities, even renting offices )

Winning Contracts

Selling your services to larger companies who vendor vet

Obtaining Finance

Selling your company for what it is truly worth at Exit

Most people think a bad credit rating effects Trade Credit and it does, but when it also effects your sales, pipeline, finance and in effect every other aspect of running a business then it is clear why negatively rated businesses find it harder to survive and flourish. Being able to understand what information the credit analysts require and how best to present that in your annual return to Company House is the key to ensuring that your company Business File is as true a reflection of your company as it should be. From the article above it should be apparent what the downside of a poor Business file is, but Company House Searches ('000) the benefits of a good Business File can be more business and an enhanced reputation. Supporting Charities – a great business strategy Supporting a charity doesn’t have to mean providing financial support and it can be provided on an ad-hoc, oneoff basis or by making resources available to that charity monthly or annually, depending on what the charity needs and how much time or resource you can offer. According to the Charities Aid Foundation, ‘leveraging the resources of an organisation can have a positive impact on the business itself, influencing customer loyalty, recruitment, skills development, as well as benefiting the people and causes that need the most support.’ This may be true of larger organisations which can get the PR wheel in motion to take advantage of the opportunities that community involvement and charitable giving can generate, but what of smaller enterprises and start-ups, what can it mean for your business?

Attract new customers As well as providing an opportunity to support a cause, or causes, you believe in, a business which demonstrates a track record of social responsibility and community involvement is attractive to customers, many of whom may come from the local community.

Build your network By becoming involved at a local level, you get to meet other people, to network with individuals, professional people, other businesses and local organisations, build positive relationships and develop an understanding of the needs of the community.

Promote your business Many of these causes will provide the opportunity to showcase your business as part of their marketing communications programme. You can share any good news stories or positive messages about your involvement through social media. Sponsoring a charity does not necessarily mean providing financial support. A recent survey commissioned by the Charities Aid Foundation* found that outwith financial contributions, other sought after forms of support include; • • • • • •

Access to business networks or funders Gifts in kind (ie space or venue usage) Skilled/unskilled volunteering time PR & branding support Sponsorship/cause related marketing Access to employees & customers

In recent years, Marketing Matters has been associated with River Kids and the West Lothian Toy Appeal, Biggar Archaeological Trust and this year, the Livingston Youth Foundation.

A Case Study: Livingston Youth Foundation For Marketing Matters, it was about giving back and recognising significant support my family had received by West Lothian Council’s Education Department – under Gordon Ford. (L-R, LYF Chairman Dave McDougall, SFA Chief Executive Stewart Regan, Sports Minister Shona Robison, LYF Chief Executive Gordon Ford, Livingston FC Chairman Gordon McDougall and local children, at the launch event.) So when Gordon was asked by Livingston Football Club to set up a charitable organisation to get children from across West Lothian, involved in active sport, to have fun, get fit and enjoy football, we wanted to help. Marketing Matters designed a logo, stationery and banner stand to support the LYF launch on 17 January 2012 and we have just completed the website . Being involved with, and recognised at the launch event - covered by the local, regional and national media - as well as working closely with Gordon, the LYF team as well as the Foundation’s partners (West Lothian Council, West Lothian Leisure, West Lothian College, the Scottish Football Association and Livingston Football Club) has already, in a very short time, been an enjoyable and worthwhile experience and we will continue to support the Foundation’s marketing communications needs throughout 2012. By providing your time, your expertise or resources, you can make a difference to a charity, to your local community and to your business. *Charities Aid Foundation: Helping companies helping charities, working together in and out of recession. Brewing up new jobs thanks to Midlothian Council Business Loan A growing local brewing business benefits from a £50,000 loan – through Midlothian Council and the East of Scotland Investment Fund (ESIF). Just seven years after it started, award-winning Stewart Brewing Limited - which employs 10 staff and a number of part-time and casual workers - is moving to larger premises at Bilston Glen Industrial Estate, Loanhead, to cope with demand. The company currently produces premium quality, hand-crafted beers and has won several awards, including the Small Independent Brewers’ Association (SIBA) Supreme Scottish champion in 2007 for Edinburgh Gold. Its new bottled beer, Hollyrood, was awarded the World’s Best Pale/Golden beer at the World Beer Awards in both 2010 and 2011. To accommodate future growth, the company needs to install higher-capacity brewing plant and equipment and upgrade packaging facilities. This will allow Stewart Brewing to commence exporting with a portfolio of internationally-available beers and also to expand its mobile ‘Beer Wagon’ for events and ‘Brew-it-Yourself’ services. From a standing start in 2004, Stewart Brewing is turning out 400,000 litres of beer per annum - which is forecast to reach 500,000 litres by the end of this year. Furthermore, two additional full-time jobs will be created in the current financial year and a further five posts by 2013. New capacity will be 1 million litres. Councillor Russell Imrie, Cabinet Member for Strategic Services at Midlothian Council, commented; “This company has a good plan for diversifying its product and growing the business. This is exactly the kind of local business which we need to help to grow with this loan scheme if we are to achieve our aim of creating up to 10,000 new jobs in Midlothian by 2020.” Stewart Brewing was launched in March 2004 by Steve Stewart, who graduated in Brewing from Heriot-Watt University and then obtained the award of Master Brewer from the Institute of Brewing. After working in the industry for eight years, he set up Stewart Brewing Ltd. with his wife Jo. Stewart Brewing Ltd is also a member of the Midlothian Food and Drink initiative - launched recently by Midlothian Tourism Forum and Midlothian Council - to promote both inward tourism to the area, new sales opportunities and to support business development. All businesses are rigorously assessed for eligibility and viability. The loan funding scheme aims to overcome ‘market failure’ e.g. where commercial lenders such as a banks are currently more risk averse in providing finance to businesses. Loan funding is provided through the East of Scotland Investment Fund - a consortium of 10 local authorities - including Midlothian Council - which aims to provide finance and encourage increased levels of entrepreneurship and business formation. This is achieved through provision of loan funding of up to a maximum of £50,000 for eligible local businesses. Midlothian Council’s share of the ESIF fund is over £600,000 - which includes European Regional Development Fund support. Midlothian Council is one of the highest performing local authorities in the East of Scotland Investment Fund partnership, both in terms of the number of loans made and their total value.
