Gregor Murray, Chief Executive Midlothian & East Lothian Chamber of Commerce.
Duncan Walker, Chief Executive West Lothian Chamber of Commmerce.
Welcome to the summer edition of InCommerce magazine. We have lots of business interest in this edition: a focus on the food and drink sector, ways to boost growth, ways to help cope with stress and advice on data security, as well as updates on initiatives and reports on member businesses. We also have a focus on awards. Times are hard but many businesses are still managing to thrive and succeed, as the recent West Lothian Award winners showed. This edition celebrates their achievements and there is a good deal we can learn from their example. In Mid and East Lothian our Awards Event will be held on Wednesday 24 October at Queen Margaret University and we are looking for nominations now. If your business or a business you are aware of is excelling let us know and we will enter them for an award. Winners are announced on the night and promoted by video and in the local press. Best wishes for the summer months. I hope to see you at Chamber events and hope you will come along to the Awards event in October, perhaps as a winner yourself. Gregor Murray

Winners announced for first ever Midlothian Food and Drink Awards
Midlothian Council has announced the winners of the new Food and Drink Awards, a partnership between the Midlothian Tourism Forum and Midlothian Council, supported by local businesses. The winners were presented with their awards on Thursday 31 May at a special awards ceremony dinner at Newbattle Abbey. Invited guests were treated to a delicious 4-course menu from catering manager Gordon Hodgson and his team at Newbattle Abbey. The menu was specially designed to celebrate excellent locally-sourced produce from across Midlothian.
The votes from all these passionate fans of excellent food and drink were used to compile a shortlist in each of the eight competition categories. Each category was then judged by a panel of experts from Midlothian Council, Midlothian Tourism Forum, Visit Scotland and the East of Scotland Food and Drink Network. Each award sponsor also judged the entries in their award category.
The new Midlothian Food and Drink Directory was also launched at the awards ceremony – it’s packed with information about great places to eat and drink across the county. Free copies are available from guesthouses, hotels and tourist attractions across Edinburgh and the Lothians. The directory can also be downloaded from the Visit Midlothian website at www.visitmidlothian.org.uk
Ian Johnson, Midlothian Council’s Head of Planning and Development, said: “I’d like to congratulate all the winners of this year’s first ever Midlothian Food and Drink Awards. I’d also like to thank all our sponsors for their support, as well as the nearly 2000 local residents who cast their vote. The very high quality of all of our shortlisted contestants reflects the excellent range of food and drink businesses we have here in Midlothian.”
The Food and Drink Awards aim to highlight the fantastic range of quality food and drink suppliers and producers here in Midlothian. A total of 1,889 residents from all across Midlothian voted during March and April for their favourite food and drink suppliers and producers.

Business Doctors on Call to Boost Growth In tough economic times, strong businesses succeed while weak ones fail. Whether feeling the effects of the current economic climate or not, many companies are not realising the maximum potential from their businesses. All too often, the day-to-day running of a business can cause business owners to lose sight of their long term objectives. Failing to take a step back from the daily issues and look again at the bigger picture can cause businesses to stagnate, leading to below par performance that becomes a vicious circle.
Achieve Your Vision
During recessionary times, small and medium-sized businesses often understandably start concentrating on the short term outlook of the business. This can result in a scatter-gun approach that means the business loses sight of its original vision. A lack of direction will often eventually lead to short term as well as long term losses as strategy goes out of the window in what feels like a battle for everyday survival. Business owners can end up feeling alone and isolated as though they have no one to turn to. Business Doctors has been working with public sector support agencies throughout the recent economic crisis to develop seminars and workshops to help SMEs shape up and gain focus for both surviving and thriving during hard times.
Want to book a check up? Business Doctors is currently offering a FREE healthcheck to businesses in East Scotland. Michael Campbell says: “Business Doctors provides proven recipes for success and I am delighted to bring our support and service to companies in the local area. I am very passionate about helping the local economy to grow and firmly believe that helping small and medium sized companies implement change by putting in place firm strategies and offering experienced, practical, down-to-earth, common sense advice is the way to get the local economy back to where it should be. To maximise positive engagement with the SME community of business owners, Business Doctors often introduces its offer through the provision of informative, practical and topical, interactive business workshops and events. These events take a comprehensive approach to all the challenges facing SMEs particularly sales, people and finance. In the last year alone, through its UK operations, Business Doctors has successfully engaged with approximately 800 individual SMEs, through a combination of interactive workshops and larger conferences.
THE STORY OF THE RESTORATION OF BLACKBURN HOUSE Blackburn House was unoccupied from the early 1970s. It was listed in 1971 in recognition of its special historic and architectural importance, a rare example of a largely unaltered mid-18th century rustic villa, complete with agricultural estate, exquisite plasterwork and joinery, and quirky architectural idiosyncrasies. But listing didn’t save the building from being abandoned for almost thirty years, during which time the fabric fell into a serious state of disrepair and its future seemed bleak. An ambitious 5-year project by the Cockburn Conservation Trust (which has since merged with other building preservation trusts to become the Scottish Historic Buildings Trust) has seen the building transformed into offices and studios for creative businesses. The majority of the surviving historic fabric has been painstakingly repaired, restored and reinstated, the inherent problems with the building have been resolved, and the building has been cleverly converted into a 21st century facility.
The fine plasterwork was in serious danger of cracking from movement. This was skilfully avoided by inserting tight padding, to act like a shock absorber.
Restoring the interiors
The internal decoration of the drawing and dining rooms on the ground floor is surprisingly lavish– a delightful mix of fine baroque joinery and impressive rococo plasterwork. The plasterwork is exceptional for a building of this size. It has been suggested that it was inspired by the work at the Adam – designed, and much more lavish, Paxton House, Berwick upon Tweed. The ceilings have been delicately restored by skilled specialists in historic plasterwork. The restoration and re-use of Blackburn House has been made possible through generous funding from: Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic Scotland, Scottish Enterprise Edinburgh & Lothians, European Regional Development Fund, West Lothian Council
For more information about the Scottish Historic Buildings Trust visit: www.shbt.org.uk
What made it happen?
Scottish Historic Buildings Trust previously operated as three individual trusts working within the Alba Conservation Group of trusts comprising Alba Conservation Trust, Cockburn Conservation Trust and Scottish Historic Buildings Trust. The three trusts merged in 2010 combining over 30 years experience in building conservation for the regeneration of Scottish communities. We are a charitable organisation whose aim is to restore historic buildings that cannot be restored through normal commercial means and, by using their conservation skills and experience, to provide them with sustainable futures. We have raised in excess of £25 million to bring over 30 historic buildings back to life throughout Scotland. The Blackburn House project was costed at over £3.5 million and following a successful fundraising campaign work began on site in October 2005 and the project was completed in June 2008.
What were the problems?
The restoration, repair and conversion of a 250 year old building of this scale was never going to be easy and there were several tricky practical, and philosophical, issues to resolve to bring the project to life.
Preventing collapse
Before the building work began it was necessary to protect the building from collapse, and make it safe to work in. Fortunately the Blackburn House Preservation Trust had inserted a number of supporting props into the building 25 years earlier which had prevented any major collapse. But more were needed: a forest of props was installed to keep the walls, roof and ceilings in place and protect them from movements which would be caused by repair works. Moving around the house was difficult with all the propping and phases of repair works the work had to be intricately planned and phased.
Blackburn House has new tenants Local event management company, Fitwise Management Ltd have just signed a lease for the recently renovated Georgian Blackburn House, with the Scottish Historic Buildings Trust. Fitwise are currently based on the outskirts of Bathgate and are hoping to complete their move to Blackburn House in July. Fitwise’s Managing Director, John Matthews said “we have recently taken on more staff and have therefore outgrown our current premises. Blackburn House offered the perfect solution, giving us room to grow while also giving us the opportunity to look after one of our local historic buildings.” John continued “we are currently based in a historic, rural property and we are excited about being able to move to a similar building and especially one which has been so lovingly restored, an 18th century house with 21st century facilities.” This is a great example of how businesses benefit through connecting with each other within the Chamber.

FREE REPORT FOR MEMBERS ON THEIR CURRENT AND LEGACY PENSIONS Midlothian and East Lothian Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with The Pension Desk, are delighted to be able to offer our members the opportunity to receive a free, no obligation report on their current and legacy pensions. In the current financial climate there are many reasons why we would want to undertake this process. Outwith our home, and our business, it is very likely that our pension is our biggest asset. Almost every day in the news we see the weakening financial position of GB plc, and therefore we must assume that the government’s ability to provide for our retirement will diminish with time. Accordingly, we must take steps to safeguard our own personal pension planning arrangements.
COMMERCIAL REMOVALS When the time comes for your business to move premises the last thing you need to worry about is how to get the filing cabinets down the stairs. Our professional office moving service will take care of every aspect of your move from providing heavy-duty packing crates for you files to moving large items of office furniture. So you can rest assured that your move will go smoothly with a minimum of disruption to your business. Commercial removals include crate hire, computer packing, dismantling and reassembly of all office and commercial furniture. This includes safes and other heavy equipment with our specialised tail-lift vehicles.
From our experience, we see many pension funds which manifest some or all of the following characteristics – (a) high fund management and other associated financial costs, (b) “zombie” funds, consigned to history and no longer being effectively managed, (c) pensions which no longer match the personal needs of the clients – a divorcee still paying for spouse benefits! (d) pension funds which do not match the risk profile of the client, (e) disproportionate administration costs attaching to multiple pension funds which could benefit from consolidation.

Community safety relates to people’s sense of personal security in the places that they live, work, and spend their leisure time. Equally this corresponds with ensuring Midlothian’s community can accommodate changes in business trends, employment and employability, and maximize opportunities with access to affordable services and goods. The Midlothian Community Safety Team is instrumental in tackling antisocial behaviour and is committed to reducing offending. Consequently, the Team works in partnership with Lothian & Borders Police to eradicate offences such as theft, shoplifting, metal theft, vandalism, graffiti, and hate crime. All of these issues can affect the normal running of a business, their capacity and their confidence in operating. The Community Safety Team uses well established mechanisms for reactive problem solving (for e.g. warnings and ASBO’s) as well as working in partnership with various agencies to implement an early intervention approach. Often the answer to community safety issues can be found in long term planning and monitoring. In other words, alongside typical enforcement the team focuses on and funds preventative work and targets the root of the problem by working with youths and presenting them with alternatives to antisocial behaviour. The Community Safety Team includes a group of Police Officers (the Community Action Team) who provide a high visibility approach to tackling antisocial behaviour and an increase in overall safety, which builds confidence in our services to the community. The Team welcomes complaints about antisocial behaviour and offers a support and advice. Hot Line 0131 271 6677 or visit www.midlothian.gov.uk/info/351/antisocial_behaviour

More than ever the news has been inundated with stories relating to security and personal data breaches. Organisations ranging from major public sector bodies to high profile private companies have all in recent months been reported to have had massive data breaches resulting in major fines. Personal data protection is an important issue for companies holding large amounts of confidential data. Companies handling and processing this data need to ensure they meet strict compliance regulations which govern it, which is why many are turning to third parties to help them manage and meet those requirements. Offsite document management offers a multitude of benefits to organisations no matter what their size. The use of an integrated document management solution offers massive savings and ultimately peace of mind in knowing your information is secure and accessible when you need it. Unsecure document disposal and storage can cost your businesses both money and reputation. Greenock’s Historic Dock Transformed THE Tall Ships visit to Greenock was a baptism of fire for James Watt Dock (JWD) Marina which rose admirably to the challenge. Work began in May 2011 to transform the dock with the installation of 50 berths, services and secure parking. Just six weeks later preparations were being made the arrival of the Tall Ships – an event which was a huge success. Around 750,000 people flocked to the area over a four day period boosting the Scottish economy by £24m with £10.4m of that spent in Inverclyde, according to an independent report.

Capacity was increased to 65 after the last Tall Ship sailed in July and there are plans to eventually accommodate 140 boats at the site which can currently berth several visiting super yachts.

The marina is accessible at all states of the tide and has a minimum depth of 5.1m (17ft). There is a combination of finger and alongside pontoon berths as well as wall berths of up to 45m+ meaning it can cater for a wide range of craft. It also has lift out facilities as well as hard-standing storage ashore and covered storage for caravans, boats on trailers, yachts and motorboats. The marina represents phase one of an ambitious £180m public/private investment in the redevelopment of Inverclyde’s historic James Watt Dock and waterfront. On completion, the project will include housing, commercial spaces, a hotel, studios, shops, a yacht club, new cycle ways and improved access to waterfront walkways. www.jameswattdockmarina.co.uk

ALL ABOARD: Simon Le Bon with Sir Arnold Clark on Drum.
Drum Berthed at James Watt Dock Marina DURAN Duran lead singer Simon Le Bon’s former yacht ‘Drum’ is based at JWD Marina. She was originally commissioned by him for the 1985/86 Whitbread Round-the-World Yacht Race. However on a test run during the Fastnet Race in August 1985 she capsized with six crew members – including Le Bon – stuck inside. Another yacht raised the alarm and a helicopter and The Royal National Lifeboat Institute were scrambled for what was a dramatic rescue operation. Drum went on to compete in the Whitbread and finished third overall. More than 10,000 spectator boats welcomed her back to Britain. Now owned by motor magnate Sir Arnold Clark, the Maxi racing yacht is a well-known sight in the waters of the Firth of Clyde in Scotland. Sir Arnold competed in UK inshore and offshore races winning trophies in the yacht and sailing extensively with his family.
Accessibility Key to Success The success of JWD Marina lies in its accessibility says Craig Latimer, its contract manager, who is based there.
However, as his business grew, he found himself spending less time aboard Drum and the world famous vessel can now be hired for the ultimate corporate hospitality and sailing experience. www.arnoldclarkdrum.com
Craig is a director of Blue Sea Marinas which runs operations at JWD. He is a chartered surveyor with extensive knowledge of the marine industry. “The transport links are second to none,” he explained. “We are at the bottom of the M8, less than 20 minutes from the airport, about 30 minutes from Glasgow city centre with convenient access to the world renowned sailing waters of the Clyde and West Coast of Scotland.” THE Mid, East & West Lothian CHAMBERs OF COMMERCE MAGAZINE • summer 12

Portavadie – Much More Than a Marina PORTAVADIE is much more than a marina – it is a stunning destination in its own right not to mention a spectacular wedding venue. The marina is set in a breathtaking man-made lagoon amid dramatic Highland scenery on Loch Fyne in Argyll. It is one of the UK’s most modern marinas with deep water, sheltered berthing, purpose-built facilities and boatyard services. It has 230 fullyserviced pontoon berths with power, water and lighting and access to a luxury bathroom with television. It is ideally positioned for access to the Firth of Clyde and, of course, Loch Fyne. It has top-of-therange, contemporary accommodation from modern selfcatering apartments and studios to cosy cottages, a romantic couples retreat or, if you prefer, shared budget holiday accommodation. There are two restaurants – the Marina Kitchen and Bar for waterfront dining with stunning views or for something more informal, the Lodge Kitchen. Portavadie goes the extra mile for its guests and can bring food to them with the option of creating a bespoke menu and having served in the comfort of your own accommodation.
Portavadie and the nearby village of Tarbert are gearing up for what is undoubtedly their busiest time of the year when The Brewin Dolphin Scottish Series sails into Loch Fyne doubling the population of the area with sailors, crew and friends. This year the racing takes place from Thursday 31 May to Monday 4 June, over the Queen’s Jubilee Holiday. Portavadie joins in the festivities with a marquee bar, live music on the Friday and Saturday evenings and an 80’s themed night on Sunday. www.portavadiemarina.com THE Mid, East & West Lothian

ALL ABOARD: Luke Patience with Junior RNCYC members.
Olympian Luke Patience Home for Yacht Club Launch OLYMPIC hopeful Luke Patience was home at the end of April to support young sailors at the Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club (RNCYC) in Rhu.
“Luke has always sailed under the burgee of the RNCYC from his early days on the Optimist circuit, through 420's, to his present partnership with Stuart Bithnell in the 470 class.
A day of bright sunshine and a stiff breeze was ideal for the launch of upgraded facilities for junior sailors and the unveiling of a new training team under the banner of North Sailing.
“There is a unique relationship with this top class athlete which is reflected in his willingness to return regularly to his sailing roots and invest in those starting out.”
With groups of young sailors on the water in the club's fleet of yachts, Luke shuttled between the different crews encouraging and enthusing them with his knowledge and love of the sport. “Sailing is a fantastic sport, so much fun, and there is nothing to beat just being out there in the elements, having a blast,” he told the children. “I was standing here myself all those years ago and now I am going to the Olympics. So it’s possible you guys could be doing that too.” Club commodore, Jim Findlay, was delighted that this new venture was so well attended thanks in no small part to Luke’s presence.
Luke was impressed with the new set up which is, in effect, a revitalised version of the programme that kick started his sailing career at the club when he was a seven-year-old. At a club supper the night before, Luke hosted a lively question and answer session for club members and friends, giving a fascinating insight into the fitness and training regime of a world-class sailor. Commodore Findlay added: “He spoke in an open and disarming way, impressing all with his dedication and humility. The Club wishes Luke and teammate Stuart the very best of luck in their bid for Olympic Gold this summer.” www.rya.org.uk/skandiateamgbr
He said: “The Club is extremely proud of Luke's achievements over the years and especially in this Olympic year where he is representing his country at the very highest level.

Scottish Series Success for Clyde Cruising Club
LOCH Fyne was at its sparkling best for the Brewin Dolphin Scottish Series over the Jubilee weekend.
With seven wins from as many starts on Loch Fyne, Grant Gordon and his team on the J/97 Fever Glenfiddich not only won each race in IRC Class 3, but also sailed flawlessly to keep two past winners of the premier regatta’s top award behind them. Fever, steered by owner Grant Gordon with Tarbert’s Ruairidh Scott as tactician, won their class by 12 points ahead of the identical J/97 of Jim Dick which won the Scottish Series Trophy a year ago. “As an advertisement for this event and for Scottish sailing I don’t think you could ask for more. It is has been brilliant,” said Grant, who was sailing in his third Brewin Dolphin Scottish Series.

Fever Glenfiddich won the overall trophy in what is one of the biggest annual sailing events in Scotland.

The weekend began with brisk conditions for competing crews and saw a 25-mile passage race on Sunday to the south of Loch Fyne around Inchmarnock island with a spectator-friendly finish line in the village of Tarbert’s natural harbour.
As well as competitive sailing there was a packed social programme based in a marquee complex on the north shore where the yachts were berthed which was also the venue for the daily prize-giving ceremony. John Watson, Clyde Cruising Club Commodore, said: “We had fabulous conditions from Friday to Sunday. It was a very positive experience after last year’s atrocious weather conditions and the marquees were a great success as a focus for the social events.” www.clyde.org THE Mid, East & West Lothian

However there was no racing on Monday as there was no wind!
Major Wind Farm Project in West Lothian Fauch Hill Sustainable Energy (FHSE) has submitted an application for a 69MW wind farm in West Lothian. Owned by European Forest Resources, FHSE is part of the French privately owned Louis Dreyfus Group, and uses an almost unique approach to wind farms of being land owner, developer and operator, managing the wind farm land for the benefit of the local community via a Recreational Development Plan and Community Benefit, and the environment via detailed habitat management programmes. The community benefit proposed is more than £7 million for local communities over the 25 year project life. The Oatridge College Recreational Development Plan will provide a free community amenity giving local people access the southern part of the Pentland Hills Regional Park, linking in with core paths in the area, and enabling them to cycle, walk and ride through the wind farm. An educational visitors’ centre is also proposed, with associated facilities, which will become a valued community asset, as well as providing sufficient clean, green electricity to supply 42,000 homes. Fauch Hill Wind Farm represents a major investment with estimated total expenditure of £201million, of which £58 million would be in West Lothian. The West Lothian labour market and supply is especially well suited to a wind farm development, and the project would contribute 15 full time jobs in the 25 year operating and maintenance phase, and another 18 full time jobs from the Recreational Development Plan and Community Benefit.

When it comes to getting the message across to your customers, Simon Clark of direct marketing agency Red McGregor recommends a tried and tested formula for success… In today’s increasingly competitive marketplace, it’s more important than ever that your marketing communications and advertising connects with your customers. A really easy tool to use is the AIDCA formula. AIDCA mirrors the way people make their buying decisions. It’s a simple way to make sure your creative ideas and communications stand the best chance of getting the response you want.
A Attention
Use strong, powerful, emotive words or images to grab attention and make people want to stop and read what you’ve got to say next.
I Interest
Getting attention is often the easy part! Now, you need to keep it. You need to engage quickly with your customer, to keep them interested and wanting to read on.
D Desire
Having gained someone’s interest, you also need to create the desire for your product or service. Make it clear how you can help your reader by answering their needs – focus on the benefits to them, rather than the features of your product.
C Conviction
These days, consumers are much more aware of sales and marketing techniques. And they’re often sceptical about advertisers’ claims. That’s why it’s always a good idea to support your message with hard facts or testimonials to convince the consumer that what you’re saying is true.
A Action
Tell people what you want them to do next with a Call to Action – whether it’s to return an application, call a number or visit your website. Don’t leave them to work it out for themselves. Next time you’re reviewing your marketing or advertising, try using the AIDCA formula to see if your creative is ticking all the right boxes. If you’d like to know more or want help building AIDCA into your communications call Simon at Red McGregor on 0131 273 5214 or email simon.clark@redmcgregor.com THE Mid, East & West Lothian CHAMBERs OF COMMERCE MAGAZINE • summer 12

Do you like approaches to change that work? Do you think outside the box for solutions to problems? Do you want to know about how you (or your employees) can feel better quickly and improve performance at work, rest and play? Then read on. We all want to be the best we can be; in the office, with our family or when on the playing field or golf course. However, sometimes we can’t do things as fully as we want, perhaps as a result of an accident or injury, stress or illness. The Bowen Technique is a remedial therapy, offering a radical approach based on the gentle movement of soft connecting tissue and nerves, rather than stretching or manipulating muscle or bone. It is simple, gentle and it works – particularly on stress levels and pain. When our bodies don’t move as fluidly as we need them to, or we don’t feel as well as we could, we start to compensate in how we move on a day to day basis. That’s when we can quickly find other problems occurring.
The Bowen Technique
In a stressful business environment it is more important than ever to look after your own health and ensure your employees are fit and well enough to be fully productive. Catching the small niggling issues before they become big ones is good business management. The same is true for health. The Bowen Technique can overcome problems much faster than conventional means alone. Early intervention is the key to regaining and maintaining good health for you and your employees. Real progress in any profession takes time and making changes to bring a body back to health is no different, particularly as each change builds on the last, bringing strength and permanence to that change. So, an apparently mild injury with no obvious lasting problems can manifest through time into a chronic condition that can result in you (or your staff) losing time at work.

Who is it for?
Busy Directors, employees or the self employed under stress to follow the next lead, organising people; working to deadlines & driving long distances; sitting at a computer typing or on the phone for long hours? Health at work is really important for you and your staff. The Bowen Technique provides support to the body, reduces stress, and improves conditions caused by stress, through lowering the heart rate and rate of breathing. By becoming more relaxed, you and your employees become more productive. Rugby players use it to recover from and prevent injury to hamstrings and knees. Golfers see improved performance through changes to their grip and swing through the arms and shoulders, neck and back. Children and babies love it, particularly when they can feed and sleep better because their colic is resolved or asthma is improved. Teenagers suffering from stress while studying benefit enormously, becoming calmer and more focussed. Busy mums have had their lives transformed by the reduction and in some cases, elimination of back, neck pain or migraine.
How does it work?
The Bowen Technique is applied through light, loose clothing, or on the skin while you lie on a couch or sit on a chair. The thumbs and fingers make rolling movements over precise areas on the body, stimulating a response via the nervous system. The technique is applied over the whole body and takes about an hour. Often the originating cause of a problem will not be in the same place as the symptoms experienced. For instance, if an ankle is injured one year it can manifest as lower back or neck pain the following year. The use of time is the radical aspect of the technique. The time between the movements is usually two to four minutes, during which the practitioner leaves the room. The time between each of the first three appointments is usually a week to ten days, allowing your body to adapt to the incremental changes made, building and improving week by week.
How long does it take?
The number of treatments varies depending on how long the problem has been around. Acute injuries may take two to four sessions whereas chronic, long term issues may take four or more. Most people notice significant changes to their sense of wellbeing very quickly. Mary Macfarlane of Lothian & Borders Bowen has seen many clients’ physical symptoms change quickly from session to session over the first few weeks of coming to see her. Mary says, “I am always thrilled when I see the differences that Bowen can make to people’s lives. Someone suffering with incredible pain can come for a few sessions of Bowen and the pain or stress reduces in intensity. I am passionate about how the Bowen Technique can improve people’s health and sense of wellbeing. One client, diagnosed with a prolapsed disk and on the verge of dismissal due to absenteeism and poor performance, says, “If I am honest Bowen was probably the last option before surgery. Mary does what she does, which is very gentle. I had six sessions of Bowen and I am back to normal. Without Bowen therapy I would have been left in a dark place of pain.” Another client, who had a motor bike accident ten years ago, says, “From the first treatment I could feel things relaxing, felt more refreshed and mentally less stressed as day to day work and home life became easier with the major drop in pain levels.”
Mary works from home near Gorebridge using additional treatment rooms in Edinburgh and Galashiels. For more details about how Bowen Therapy can work for you, contact Mary Macfarlane on 07989133215 by email: lothianbordersbowen@gmail.com. Mary’s website www.lbbowen.co.uk contains more information and testimonials from people who have experienced this amazing technique.

The Sport of Kings...
and the Punters
HORSE racing may be the sport of kings but it is also a favourite with the punters if attendance at the recent Coral Scottish Grand National in Ayr is anything to go by. Scotland has five racecourses which will stage 96 race meetings in 2012 offering flat and jump racing at different times of the year. The layout of each track varies dramatically, placing different demands on the horses and riders.

Ayr Racecourse
Ayr is Scotland’s premier racecourse and stages 27 fixtures throughout the year both on the flat and over jumps. It is home to the Coral Scottish Grand National and the William Hill Ayr Gold Cup. www.ayr-racecourse.co.uk
Hamilton Park Racecourse
Hamilton Park boasts Scotland’s only dedicated flat track and has 18 race meetings throughout the summer with a highlight being the Super Six series of events. This winds up with the Ladbrokes Lanark Silver Bell Race Night on Friday 24 August. This will be the fifth running of the handicap race which has what is believed to be the oldest sporting trophy in existence. It dates from 1165 when it was gifted to the people of Lanark by King William ‘The Lion’. www.hamilton-park.co.uk
Perth Racecourse
Set in the stunning grounds of Scone Palace, Perth Racecourse launched the new racing year with the three-day festival in April and continues with summer jump racing action until September. Perth has been voted Best Small Racecourse in Scotland and the North East for three times in the past five years and had a record breaking 2011 season with attendance figures up by 12 per cent. It recently announced an almost near 30 per cent increase in prize money for the forthcoming season with the 2012 total exceeding £620,000 – an increase of £160,000 on last year. At a time when British horseracing’s finances have been hit by a steady decline, with poor prize-money being the inevitable result, a successful period of growth in attendance and turnover has allowed Perth to buck the trend and invest in this area. June 10 sees the focal point of the season, and one of the most prestigious summer jump races in the UK, with the City of Perth Gold Cup. This is a big event in Scottish racing attracting a family audience of around 12,000. www.perth-races.co.uk
Musselburgh Racecourse
Historic Musselburgh Links has been a venue for horse racing since 1816 and is one of the most recent courses to develop a jumping track. It is one of two courses in Scotland that races both on the flat and over obstacles. Its big race day is the Edinburgh Cup on June 2 and racing continues at Musselburgh until December with a Christmas meeting on the 10th. www.musselburgh-racecourse.co.uk
Kelso Racecourse
Kelso in the Scottish Borders is known as ‘Britain’s friendliest racecourse’. It is hosting 12 race days in 2012, mainly in the winter and is one of the most popular venues for enthusiasts of jump racing. www.kelso-races.co.uk www.scottishracing.co.uk

Crowds Flock to Scottish Grand National
ALL SMILES: Winning jockey Timmy Murphy with Merigo and groom Claire Graham.
AYR Racecourse had one of its biggest crowds in 20 years for the Coral Scottish Grand National in April. More than 16,000 spectators saw 15/2 shot Merigo cross the line a head in front of Auroras Encore to become the first horse since 1956 to take the prize again having won it in 2010 and been runner-up last year. Cheers normally reserved for a football cup final winning goal echoed around Ayr Racecourse on a beautiful sunny day. The 11-year-old ridden by Timmy Murphy chased Auroras Encore up the home straight and was a length down jumping the last fence but rallied to beat Ryan Mania’s mount as they passed the post. Trainer Andrew Parker who is based near Dumfries summed it all up after the race: “That’s eight times Merigo has run here and he’s won five, been second twice and third once. He just comes alive here – he has the heart of a lion.” The winning mount had the backing of Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond who is a well-known horse racing enthusiast.

Leading owner Graham Wylie had a superb meeting with three winners on Saturday and one on Friday. Largs owner Mrs Jo Tracey landed another Saturday highlight, The Weatherbys Bloodstock Insurance Handicap Chase with the David Pipe trained, Tom Scudamore ridden Problema Tic (6/1) and top trainer Nicky Henderson landed a double with Cucumber Run (10/1) and River Maigue (10/11 fav) both ridden by Barry Geraghty. Huge TV Audience for Horse Racing at Ayr
“The quality of the event has been reflected in the outstanding viewing figures.” Jamie Aitchison – Channel 4
CHANNEL 4’s coverage of the Coral Scottish Grand National at Ayr Racecourse attracted 1.3 million viewers for the prestigious four mile contest. The peak, a 36 per cent increase on 2011 figures, puts the grade three event in the top five jump race broadcasts for Channel 4’s live racing coverage that day. Broadcasts from Ayr and Newbury Racecourses averaged at 759,000 viewers with a 7.8 per cent share – a one third increase in volume and quarter share when compared year on year. The Morning Line programme also increased its audience figures by 20 per cent with Nick Luck at the helm and jockey Campbell Gillies making his first appearance. The show averaged at 345,000 viewers, peaking at 419,000. Jamie Aitchison, Channel 4’s sports editor, said: “We were delighted to be at Ayr Racecourse for the first time with the entire team. The quality of the event has been reflected in the outstanding viewing figures. “We would like to thank Ayr Racecourse for being so welcoming and look forward to working with them on the Ayr Gold Cup later in the year.”

The Dalkeith Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) and Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS) is now coming towards the end of its third year and much has been achieved in the centre of Dalkeith. The THI and CARS is a historic building grant scheme set up by a partnership comprising, The Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic Scotland, Dalkeith Business Renewal and Midlothian Council. The Dalkeith THI/CARS will provide 2.5 million pounds of investment in the town over a 5 year period. The main aims of the scheme together with the achievements so far are set out below:
Dalkeith Town Centre Regeneration
75, 77, 79-81 High Street - These 4 properties have been restored at the same time. They occupy a key position in the High Street, at its junction with South Street and are stone tenements with shops on the ground floor with flats above dating from the early/ mid 19th century. The repair and restoration work has involved repair to roofs, chimneys, walls, windows and architectural features. Shop front improvements have been carried out at No 81 High Street.
Strengthen and enhance the character of the High Street by awarding grants to repair and restore priority historic buildings . Grants have been awarded to 18 buildings and 22 owners. Work is well advanced and nearing completion on the following projects:

After
87-89 High Street - These are just along from 75-81 and are similar buildings with repairs to roofs, chimneys, walls and a new shop front at ground floor level. 104-106, 108-110, 110A-114 High Street - Similar to the above but on the other side of the High Street opposite the junction with the Edinburgh Road. Shop improvements will take place to 3 shops at ground floor level. 41 High Street - This is a double fronted property prominently positioned in the High Street. The work has involved a new shop front for the opticians on the ground, repairs to walls and new windows on the upper level. THE Mid, East & West Lothian

BEFORE
After
1-3 Musselburgh Road - This is a key listed building next to the entrance to Dalkeith Country Park just off the north end of the High Street. This early 19th century stone cottage had been derelict and vacant for a number of years. The scheme has involved its complete restoration to provide a dwelling. The following schemes are now starting on site The Former Cross Keys Hotel This important historic building dating from 1804 has been vacant for a number of years and has been subject to dry rot attacks and damp penetration. The repair and restoration scheme involves converting the upper floor to flats and commercial use on the ground floor. The Tolbooth - One of the oldest buildings in Dalkeith. It was once the town’s jail and court house, a customs facility for the payment of goods related to the market in the town. The last man to be executed here was William Thomson who was hanged for highway robbery in 1827. The repair work will restore the stonework on the front and rear of the building and the roof will be repaired at the same time. 69-71 High Street (WH Smith) - This is another key double fronted stone building in the centre of the town. The scheme involves repairing and restoring the stone frontage, rebuilding one of the chimneys and a new shop front. 15-17 High Street - Another historic building in the High Street in poor repair with a very badly weathered semi circular stone access stair turret at the rear. The scheme involves restoring the stonework, repairs to the roof and carefully restoring the rear stair turret and improvements to the shop front on the ground floor. 4-8 High Street - Two shop fronts, Boom Barbers and the Nail Bar will be restored and enhanced. These are situated towards the southern end of the High Street. All of the above work will make a significant improvement to the appearance and vitality of the High Street.

Create an improved Public Realm
A grant has been given to the upgrade of the High Street. This has involved the widening of footpaths and repaving in yorkstone, new granite sett lay by areas for parking and servicing shops and a new pedestrian crossing/raised table to calm traffic with new stainless steel street furniture, i.e. bollards, lights and cycle racks. The vennels giving access to the High Street shops from the car park at the rear have also been repaved in yorkstone and granite setts with new lighting and signage. This has provided a safer and more comfortable route for pedestrians. The scheme has been designed to make the street more comfortable for pedestrians and to provide better parking and servicing for shops. The materials chosen i.e. yorkstone, granite setts and whinstone kerbing compliment the sandstone buildings and the historic character of the street.
BEFORE
Develop Advice and Guidance
There has been a number of guidance leaflets produced to help owners look after their buildings and to promote good design in the High Street. A shop front design guide was published last year. These are available on the website. www.dalkeiththi.co.uk. A new leaflet and DVD will be published this summer to further advise home owners about what to look for when repairing and maintaining their property.
Develop Education and Training
This is the key part of the project and a number of initiatives are being developed with community groups, the Dalkeith History Society, the local Community Council, local schools and traders. “I was here Dalkeith” is a project to collect people’s memories and stories of past and present Dalkeith. A website has been set up to capture these. www.iwozheredalkeith.com. A DVD “Dalkeith at a Crossroads” was produced by the Dalkeith Youth Forum. Dalkeith Heritage Trail with guided walks, leaflets, plaques and interpretative boards is being developed. As well as community engagement a training plan has been launched with the Dalkeith THI/CARS training provider, Edinburgh’s Telford College. The training plan is also on the website www.dalkeiththi.co.uk. This will deliver a number of workshops and seminars on traditional building skills, techniques and materials aimed at home owners, contractors, building professionals and others interested in historic building repair and restoration. The next set of free workshops is in September …… book now!! Independent School Sector Numbers Stable INDEPENDENT schools are a popular educational choice for parents in Scotland with numbers in the sector stable despite a decrease in Scotland’s overall pupil population. Last year there were more than 31,000 children in Scottish Council of Independent Schools (SCIS) schools - 1,737 in nurseries, 10,893 in primary and 18,795 in senior schools.*
Numbers have increased for secondary pupils in mainstream schools, and for nursery and primary pupils in special schools. There has been a slight reduction in pupil numbers at mainstream nursery and primary levels, probably due in part to the decreasing numbers of primary-aged children in the population. The number of boarding and residential pupils has also fallen marginally. Scotland has 75 independent SCIS schools with 39 of them ‘all through’ – that is catering from age five to 18. Amongst the key aims of the Scottish Council of Independent Schools (SCIS) are to provide information, advice and guidance to parents and to communicate and negotiate with the Scottish Parliament, the Government, and with public and private bodies on behalf of the independent sector. SCIS became a charitable company limited by guarantee in 1990. www.scis.org.uk * Figures from SCIS.

Lomond School Looks Forward
Photos courtesy of Lomond School
SENIORS: S5 pupils Calum Wilson, Verity McSheaffrey, Ross Stanley-Whyte and Katherine Bull.
ITS motto is ‘prospiciamus’ which is not a Hogwarts’ spell but Latin for ‘let us look forward’. That is exactly what Helensburgh’s Lomond School did when much of it was destroyed by fire in 1997 and what it continues to do in 2012. The new purpose-built modern replacement for the old St Bride’s building was followed in 2003 by a boarding house built on the site of the former school accommodation block which bore the same name as its predecessor - Burnbrae.
Headmaster Simon Mills explained the school’s ethos: “We aim to remain at the forefront of educational best practice, retaining the best of a traditional education, whilst innovating and remaining open to new ideas and approaches. “Consistently ranked academically amongst the top schools in Scotland, Lomond is nevertheless non-selective in its intake and achieves its remarkably consistent results due to the quality of its provision both within and outwith the classroom.
Lomond is unique in the West of Scotland as the only independent school which takes boarders as well as day pupils. It is co-educational and caters for children at nursery, junior and senior levels with day places from age three to 18 years and boarding options from age 10. Children travel from across Dunbartonshire, Stirlingshire and Argyll and Bute to attend with bus routes from Killearn, Drymen, Gartocharn and Balloch. The school delivers consistently high academic results and achieved the highest number of ‘excellent’ ratings from HMIE of any school in Scotland during its last inspection in 2007.
HEADMASTER: Simon Mills. “Our family approach, small classes, positive ethos and shared determination to help pupils of all abilities progress to their full level is key.”
It also offers a broad range of more than 50 extra-curricular activities including sport, music, drama and outdoor pursuits plus a wide variety of trips and expeditions at home and abroad which cater for a variety of ages and interests. In addition to a new, purpose built sports hall which was completed in 2009, the school has four tennis courts and a full sized, floodlit, all-weather pitch which is used for outdoor sports. Not surprisingly for a coastal town, sailing is very popular at Lomond, with a number of international competitors amongst the pupils.
“Our family approach, small classes, positive ethos and shared determination to help pupils of all abilities progress to their full level is key. “The school prides itself on enabling every individual to achieve their full potential both academically and as a human being.” www.lomondschool.org

Oatridge launches rural employers’ forum Employers across the wide spectrum of Scotland’s rural industries are being offered the chance to influence the future shape of workforce teaching and training at the country’s premier landbased vocational college. Oatridge College in West Lothian launched the Scottish Rural Employers’ Forum with an inaugural meeting on Thursday, May 24, 2012. It is planned to become an annual event at which businesses and organisations, whatever their size or industry sector, will have the opportunity to hear what is on offer in employee education and development, but more importantly, have their say on what the academics should be doing to best meet their needs. The event, was held in partnership with Skills Development Scotland, builds on the successful work of the College’s industrial liaison groups, which have and will continue to concentrate on specific sectors, like agriculture, horticulture, animal care, countryside management, equestrianism, horticulture and landscaping. Brian Williams, the College Business Training Manager and part of the team which drew up plans for the Forum, says: “We are fully committed to expanding the range of employers we are working with, because we want to maximise, where possible, the opportunities for young people to benefit from the opportunities available through Skills Development Scotland’s Modern Apprenticeship programme. “We want to hear from employers what we can do for them and for their employees, including future employees, while bringing them up to date with what we are already doing and of course, giving them an excellent opportunity to network with other businesses in their own and other sectors.”
the country during Apprenticeship Week, it would be an excellent platform for the first meeting of the Forum,” says Brian Williams. “The College fully supports the Scottish Government’s drive to encourage more people into vocational education and training and grow the Modern Apprenticeships programme and we are delighted that one of our speakers on Thursday will be Danny Logue, Skills Development Scotland’s Operations Director.” Minister for Environment Stewart Stevenson said: “I was delighted to visit Oatridge College to open the first meeting of the Scottish Rural Employers Forum during Scottish Apprenticeship Week. “The week offers a great chance to showcase what Modern Apprenticeships can provide for both employees and employers across the whole of Scotland. “The Scottish Government wants Scotland to be a successful country where people want to live and work. Jobs are our top priority and the record-breaking 26,427 Modern Apprenticeships we delivered last year shows the kind of meaningful and lasting opportunities we are providing and will continue to build on. Danny Logue says: “Many rural employers have quite specific challenges, which make the flexibility of the modern apprenticeship programme particularly beneficial. Smaller employers operating on tight margins recognise the advantage of having an apprentice contributing to productivity from day one, while learning the specialisms of their employer.” Brian Williams adds: “It is important to emphasise the good things that have been done for a number of years here at Oatridge. Our message is that we will continue to serve our community, locally and nationally. Thursday’s event, we hope, will build on existing relationships and open up new ones among employers we haven’t worked with in the past.”
Planning for the creation of the Forum has been going on for some time, but the date chosen for the launch is midway through Skills Development Scotland’s Apprenticeship Week. “We thought that with events happening all over
