Introduction “In only 6 weeks we built a marina in James Watt Dock and were preparing to host the Tall Ships Races in July 2011”

A

lot has happened at James Watt Dock since 1878 but last year saw the first real change in direction in its 132 year history. The dock has experienced a number of major developments with works to the Sugar Warehouse, a new road and the creation of an attractive new public realm area. In May 2011 work started on a brand new marina with the installation of 50 berths, services and secure parking. Only six weeks later the team at James Watt Dock Marina were in preparation mode for the arrival of more than 50 Tall Ships and Training Vessels .... a challenge by any standard! As the last Tall Ship left the dock in mid-July, new pontoon fingers were being installed taking the capacity of the Marina to 65 boats. Three months later the marina’s first summer season was over and 53 boats had arrived at James Watt Dock for winter afloat, ashore or under cover. 2012 will be the marinas first full season and we are looking forward to continued success welcoming more visitors and annual berth holders to James Watt Dock. Around the marina we hope our regular berth holders will notice some progressive changes to the dock and public realm whilst we also look forward to welcoming some new tenants to bolster our service offering. As we continue to develop please keep a watchful eye on our website www.jameswattdockmarina.co.uk for the most up-to-date information or why not follow us on Facebook. James Watt Dock Marina is also proud to be at the centre of one of Scotland’s largest regeneration projects. For more information on the proposed developments at the dock please see page 23 of this yearbook. It really is exciting times for James Watt Dock, boat owners and for Greenock Martin Latimer

Greenock History James Watt Dock James Watt Dock commenced construction on 1st August 1878 and was completed in 1886. It was conceived to allow Greenock to compete with Glasgow with the aim of attracting transatlantic shipping traffic and establishing Greenock as, “one of the greatest and best equipped British seaports”. At the time of development James Watt Dock was believed to be the only dock on the Clyde where vessels of large tonnage could be kept afloat at all states of tide. However, the development of the dock was not cheap. The original budget was estimated at £242,885 5s 3d however, the actual outlay by 1886 was £634,343 8s 3d (or £850,000 including the price of the land). The justification for such an undertaking (and substantial debt) was the great and rapidly increasing volumes of trade passing up the Clyde to Glasgow. It was thought at the time that such a facility would allow Greenock to benefit from the larger ships which were being used for trade and passenger traffic that were constrained in their draft to navigate the upper reaches of the Clyde at anything below high tide. For a period of time this belief held true and allowed Greenock to enter a period of unexampled expansion. In conjunction with staple industries (such as sugar refining and ship building), the boom in trade fuelled significant development leading to the growth of the town. Other docks making up the Greenock Harbours include; West Harbour, East India Harbour, Victoria Harbour, Albert Harbour, Princes Pier, West Quay, Customhouse Quay, Garvel Graving Dock and Great Harbour. Some of these harbours and docks no longer operate as functioning harbours and indeed some have been in-filled to expand waterfront development.

6

Titan Crane The large fitting out crane or Titan Cantilever Crane visible as you approach the dock was built in 1917 by Sir William Arrol & Co. The 150t crane is a Category A listed structure (Historic Scotland Building ID: 34175) and is one of only 4 left in Scotland (40 were built by Arrol & Co and sent all around the world). Ship Building Almost two thirds of Britain’s tonnage in iron steam ships was produced on the Clyde with many of the ships built and launched at the numerous yards between Port Glasgow and Greenock. Demand for Clyde-built ships reached its peak before the outbreak of the First World War with a steady decline in completions and launches. In 1955, 27 new ships were launched from Inverclyde yards but by 1975 this figure had dropped to just 10. Nowadays, the last remaining yard on the lower Clyde is Fergusons, founded in 1903. Sugar Refining The first commercial sugar refinery opened in Greenock in 1850 and by 1864 almost a quarter of Britain’s sugar refineries were located in Greenock and Port Glasgow. By the late 19th century the sugar trade was booming with up to 400 ships arriving at Greenock ports each year from the Carribean. The most famous of these refineries, Tate & Lyle, was formed in 1921 and operated successfully in the town until its closure in 1997. The large warehouse at James Watt Dock Marina was used for the storage of raw and processed sugar – this category A-listed structure is known locally as the ‘Sugar Shed’. James Watt James Watt (1736-1819) is the most famous person to have been born in the Inverclyde area. His discoveries and inventions helped to make Britain the world’s first industrial power. His work ranged from patenting letter and drawing copiers to undertaking improvements to Greenock Harbour but his name is most widely known through his work on steam

power and the industrilisation of manufacturing processes. More information on James Watt can be found by visiting Inverclyde Council’s Local History & Heritage pages or by visiting the McLean Museum & Art Gallery. Local Racing

L

ocal racing at JWD Marina takes place on the ‘East Patch’ which is around 2.0nm North West of the marina. From April 2012, yachts from James Watt Dock will join with yachts from other clubs to race in a combined fleet under the organisation of the East Patch Race Committee (EPRC). There are class starts for IRC/CYCA 1 & 2 as well as One Design fleets including; Sonata, Sonar & Laser SB3. Through the season (from April to October) there are 6 series, initially starting on Sunday afternoons then turning to Wednesdays evenings as the days grow longer. Wednesday evening racing usually has starts from 19:00, whilst Sunday starts are normally a rather leisurely 13:00. From the end of

8

August there is a popular Autumn Points series which runs up until the middle of October over 6 Sundays. Being only 30 minutes from Glasgow and approximately 25 minutes from the start-line as such, JWD Marina is an ideal base from which to race your yacht. To find out more about racing at JWD Marina please contact the marina office on 01475 729 838 or email info@jwdmarina.co.uk

Nature and Responsible Boating Birds The Inner Clyde Estuary is a RAMSAR site (UK13024) and covers over 1,825 hectares of wetland. Some areas of the estuary are also Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and are an important habitat for wintering water birds. A selection of those most commonly seen is listed below: Redshank (Tringa Totanus) The redshank is easily identified by its long reddish orange legs and long beak. Whilst there is a relatively large native population they are mainly seen in the Clyde estuary during winter when the population swells with the arrival of migrating birds from Iceland. Black Guillemot (Cepphus grylle) From March until around August JWD Marina is home to around 5 nesting pairs of Black Guillemots. These birds are easily recognisable with their striking black and white plumage and bright red feet. The Guillemots currently nest within some of the crevices found in the dock wall and during 2012 we will be introducing 4 nesting boxes to the marina to support the indigenous population. Mute Swan (Cynus olar) The marina is regularly visited by pairs of Mute Swans which can be identified by their bright white plumage and orange/ black bill. The birds do not nest on site but come into the marina to feed on the seaweed which grows on the dock walls.

Fish Basking Shark (Cetorhinus maximus) Basking sharks have made a steady resurgence in numbers in the Clyde. This slow moving, filter feeder is a harmless member of the shark family but is nonetheless an impressive site given its size (up to 10m). Although not often seen in 12

the upper reaches of the Clyde, sightings south of Toward Point are not uncommon during the summer months with the animal’s large dorsal fin protruding from the water. Basking sharks are generally tolerant of boats but as a protected species mariners should exercise caution when manoeuvring in proximity to them. More information on Basking Sharks and the best places to spot them is available on Scottish National Heritage’s website www.snh.org.uk.

Marine Mammals Harbour or Common Porpoise (Phocoena phocoen) Porpoises are commonly seen around the Clyde often in pods of up to 10. They grow up to 1.9m and are a dark grey in colour with a small dorsal fin and bluff nose. In the Clyde most sightings occur in the evening during the summer where they often breach the surface whilst hunting schools of mackerel. Grey Seal (Halichoerus grypus) Grey seals are found abundantly around the Clyde often sleeping on rocks in colonies or on their own fishing or sunbathing in the channel. At up to 3m in length and weighing up to 300kg they are relatively big seals and can be identified by their silver and dark grey fur.

Common Seal (Phoca vitulina) Like Grey seals, Common (or Harbour) seals are found in reasonable numbers around the Clyde. The Common seal is smaller than the Grey seal growing to around 1.9m and weighing up to 190kg. Common Seals have recently been spotted as far up river as Braehead.

Responsible Boating As boaters we all have a responsibility to respect the environment – after all it’s what makes boating on the Clyde so special. At James Watt Dock Marina we are working with The Green Blue to establish effective environmental working practices to minimise our impact on the environment. We all enjoy the freedom that boating provides and like you we are incredibly keen to keep red tape and regulation of our leisure pursuit and sport to a minimum. The Green Blue aims to do this by encouraging people to voluntarily change their habits and become more environmentally friendly every time they go boating. More information on The Green Blue initiative is available at www.thegreenblue.org.uk or on our website www.jameswattdockmarina.co.uk.

Scottish waters offer stunningly beautiful scenery, some of the best sailing in the world and a wealth of marine wildlife. Follow these top tips from The Green Blue to help safeguard these beautiful waters and habitats for future generations.

More tips and advice can be found on our website or in this How To Guide for Scotland, available to download from the website

• Keep your distance from wildlife. Use binoculars for a better view. The Scottish Marine Wildlife Watching code - www.marinecode.org - tells you all you need to know. • Be careful where you land, especially in the breeding season, taking care not to disturb nesting birds or seal colonies. • Be careful not to spill oil and fuel and check your bilges before pumping out. One litre of oil or fuel can contaminate one million litres of water! • Raw sewage from boats can be a powerful pollutant. Use shore-side toilet facilities wherever possible and particularly if you are anchored in water with restricted tidal flow or near shellfish beds. • Use only environmentally friendly cleaners below and on deck. • In the more remote parts of Scotland waste bins can be hard to find so plan to hold on to your rubbish and dispose of it properly, recycling as much as possible. Make sure no loose waste gets blown overboard. • Minimise your use of fossil fuels, sail where possible and go with the tide. Use the free gym and row your tender rather than use the outboard! • Avoid excess noise and wash and take time to enjoy the tranquillity of this beautiful coastline. • Always ‘Check, Clean, Dry” your kit and boat to help stop the spread of non-native species. Marina Development

T

he James Watt Dock Marina forms the focal point of a major redevelopment of Greenock’s waterfront from Port Glasgow to the Custom House Quay. Along with the new Arts Guild Theatre at East India Harbour, the marina is a confident expression of the development partner’s faith in the long term future of the area as they develop new commercial, retail, leisure and industrial opportunities for Inverclyde. The James Watt Dock development will be a mixed use development; a vibrant mix of flatted and detached homes, bars, restaurants, leisure, retail and commercial space. Ultimately the marina will be spread over two basins, with 140 berths in the current dock and up to 350 berths in the Great Harbour. Garvel dry dock and the associated yard will remain and ultimately a boatyard and service facilities will be developed on the “Perch” to the seaward side of the

Great Harbour. The marina administration block, reception, chandlery, other marine related offices and a café will be incorporated into a new building in view of both marinas, next to the entrance roundabout. Plans to welcome leisure craft into East India Harbour are being considered, and it is likely that this will take the form of a simple “town quay” pontoon facility including mooring facilities for a limited number of local resident craft.

SUGAR SHEDS: POTENTI

Whilst all these plans are very exciting, they are to some extent reliant on a stronger development market and in the meantime James Watt Dock LLP and their marina managers Blue Sea Marinas Ltd are looking at short and medium term projects to continue to develop the early and strong interest Illustr shown in James Watt Dock Marina.

ames Watt Dock is entered from the main Clyde channel with the large blue Titan crane and Sugar Warehouse visible from the Clydeport Container Terminal. From the Tail of the Bank buoy off Greenock, follow the channel until the yellow cardinal marking the north side of the entrance to the dock is seen south of Buoy No 16 (5th Port marker after the Tail of the Bank). There is ample depth in the main channel, and yachts will normally be safe out of the channel to the north except between the Tail of the Bank and Buoy No 4, where the depth is less than 2m. Skippers are advised to refer to Admiralty Chart 1994 for detailed navigation information. Enter the marina keeping the yellow cardinal marker to your port side (approximate location 55N 56’ 46.39” -4W 44’ 9.01”); there is a drying bank between the yellow cardinal and the main shipping channel. As you enter the dock you will see the marina in front of you. Vessels to be berthed in North Basin should proceed to the port side of the central quay whilst vessels to be berthed in South Basin should proceed to the starboard side of the central quay. The marina plan on page 28 may assist in locating your allocated berth on arrival at James Watt Dock.
