town itself, making us very much part of the local community and encouraging a close relationship that we take great pride in nurturing.
This is the first time that our club has published a Yearbook and, as an introduction to Largs Golf Club, we are sure its content, spiced with some light-hearted comment, will be both informative and interesting to potential members, guests and visitors alike — not to mention our current members, as well!
Hopefully, this innovative Yearbook will allow you to share the pleasure and joy our club, town and surrounding area provide and also give you an insight into the history and activities enjoyed by our membership.

Founded in 1891, Largs is an outstanding course, characterised by magnificent vistas along the Firth of Clyde. In stark contrast to sea views at the front, Kelburn Estate at the rear of the course provides
not only a spectacular backdrop, but also an interesting variety of wildlife, including uncommon birds. The course is truly unusual, too, in that despite nestling beside the coast, like many of its near neighbours, it is in essence a parkland course, incorporating lush fairways, meandering burns and tree-lined dog-legs. Kelburn offers a fair challenge to most golfers, from the low handicappers to the "hackers", as has been proved by the number of visitors and guests eager to return to us year after year.
So, after your round of golf, why not relax in our dining room and, while sampling our first-class catering, watch the ferries crossing to the Isles of Cumbrae and Bute. Perhaps you may even catch a glimpse of a luxury liner heading out to sea. Hopefully, you may share this wonderful club with us and we look forward to welcoming you soon.

Club History
Largs Golf Club was founded by a group of 12 local gentlemen following a meeting in the Lesser St Columba Church hall (a site on which now stands Sandringham) on the evening of Monday, April 27, 1891. The following were present: The Reverend Canon Low of the Parsonage (chair), Major AH Eckford, Captain Robert Wood, Messrs Henry S McCall, John Orr, Peter Watson, John Morris, George Barclay, John H Malcolm junior, John Baldie, David Easton and John Murray. Land was leased at Routenburn at the north end of town and a total of 30 members were enrolled, with agreement to levy an annual subscription of ten shillings and sixpence for gentlemen and five shillings for ladies. Willy Campbell, at the time a renowned golf professional from Ranfurly, helped to establish a nine-hole course and the first medal teed off in June 1891. Two years later, the club moved to its present site at Kelburn, at the other end of town, but it remained a nine-hole course. It was only when the Earl of Glasgow (then Viscount Kelburn) agreed in 1953 to allow the club to extend into the parkland area of the south side of the road leading to the castle that the present 18-hole course was established. In the same year, a new clubhouse was inaugurated.
6
Then, in 1981, members took a seismic step forward when the club purchased the golf course from the Earl of Glasgow (now its Honorary President) for the princely sum of £125,000 + vat. Down the decades, work has been ongoing to improve both the course and the facilities for members. One of the most obvious changes was the re-siting of the first tee in the late 60s. It was moved from the side of the boundary wall in the car park to its present-day position. To celebrate the club’s centenary in 1981, the clubhouse underwent a £325,000 refurbishment programme — resulting in the current attractive two-storey building, overlooking the Firth of Clyde along with its majestic vistas of the islands of Cumbrae, Bute and, of course, the peak of Arran’s Goat Fell and the “Sleeping Warrior”. The club’s on-going expansion programme over the years has involved carrying out extensive irrigation work in 1962 along with other major reconstruction, including installing a full watering system to the greens in 1998-99. More recent innovations have included purchasing state-of-the-art grass-cutting machinery and employing revolutionary greenkeeping techniques such as a green iron, all of which have aided growth and helped to make our greens the envy of many other clubs. None of this would have
been possible, though, without the expertise of head greenkeeper Iain Barr and his dedicated team. Throughout the years, many leading Scottish golfers could be spotted strutting the fairways at Kelburn, including late greats John Panton and Barclay Howard. Then there’s our very own son of Largs, Sam Torrance MBE OBE, not to mention his dad, Bob, the guru of golf who has coached some of the world’s leading players, including Padraig Harrington. Sam, though, still has an existing link at Kelburn. The buggy that he used as captain to steer the European Ryder Cup team to victory against the United States of America at The Belfry in 2002 is still a focal point at Largs Golf Club. Rightly, Sam, who was a junior player at Largs, was installed as an Honorary Member in 1984. Other noteworthy Largs members include the late Alec MacGregor, who achieved immense status by reaching the final of the Scottish Amateur Championship and had many a titanic tussle with his great adversary Alex Beaton. Other respected figures among our current members are former President of the Scottish Golf Union Bob McLaren and Bobby Lennox, who is enshrined in Scottish footballing folklore as part of Celtic Football Club’s 1967 European Cup-winning team in Lisbon. Turning back the clock, Largs reached the grand old age of 100 in 1991 and the landmark occasion was given an added
fillip when twinning celebrations were held with Shrewsbury Golf Club to mark both clubs’ Centenary Year. The friendship and comradeship continues to this day. The hand of friendship extends overseas, too, with our link to the Starnberg Golf Club in Germany. The millennium brought changes, as well. The committee agreed in 2000 that full membership would be open to everyone and, only last year, Jill Fox became the first lady to be inducted as club captain. Largs also made history in 2009 when it was granted Championship Course status after hosting the prestigious Scottish Under-16 Boys’ Championship, a competition that attracted the cream of young golfers from around the world. Since the club moved to Kelburn, there have been only eight professionals — John McKellar, Fred Bullock, Bert McMillan, Robin Fyfe, Robbie Stewart, Bob Collinson, Kenny Docherty and present incumbent Andy Fullen. Proof, if required, that once you’ve experienced the warmth and welcoming of Largs Golf Club, it’s difficult to tear yourself away from it.

Ladies' Captain It is a privilege and an honour to be Ladies’ Captain in 2010, carrying on a long family tradition as my mother, grandmother and aunt were all Ladies’ Captain in the past. Largs Golf Club has a thriving Ladies’ section. A total of 69 ladies have playing handicaps and most play regularly. There are 13 ladies with lapsed handicaps and I hope they will regain their playing handicaps this year. We have nine junior girls, one of whom already has a low handicap, and we have one girl youth who is an exceptionally good player. Linn Munton Ladies’ Captain
Largs have been playing in the Greenlees for the past 10 years, although the competition has been running for nearly 70 years. Largs are in the SLGU Western Division which consists of 28 clubs split into three divisions. We are in Division Three at the moment, narrowly missing out on promotion in 2009. Hopefully, we will be successful in 2010. The new playing season is already under way and we hope for good weather all summer with no cancelled competitions. Largs Golf Club has one of the most attractive courses in the West of Scotland and we are very lucky to be playing it on a regular basis. Our Open Day in August is very popular, with ladies coming from far and wide. The Ladies’ Section is a very social group. We have coffee mornings, fun competitions and get-togethers after our many games throughout the season. Photographs are posted in the members’ section of our website which is updated regularly. Do have a look. However, I could not be Ladies’ Captain unaided and have to thank my vice-captain, Elaine Sirel, the Ladies’ Committee and all other willing volunteers for their help and support.

Junior Golf Over the last few years, Largs Golf club has recognised the importance that a strong Junior Section brings to the club. This is not just for the present success of the club but also critical for the future. We are currently embarking on several Junior initiatives with the full support of the Committee, the professional, Andy Fullen, and a number of club volunteers. This is being developed for all ages and is designed not only to introduce Juniors to golf, but also to retain their interest in future years. Everything from coaching the basic skills, course management and course etiquette is included in these plans.
12
We have 87 Junior members, with the majority of them participating in our Sponsored Child Programme. This programme involves a 10-week coaching course over the summer months and also includes regular evenings when the whole Junior Section — from sponsored children through to ages 17 and 18 — come together to integrate and play a selection of the holes on the course. As well as the Children’s Sponsors, the club professional and other volunteers will be available to support this exciting initiative. Follow all activities and events involving the Junior Section on our new Facebook page: LARGS GOLF CLUB JUNIORS.

Clubhouse & Catering Visitors have full use of the clubhouse facilities. The restrooms are equipped with showers and freshly-laundered towels to reinvigorate you after your round of golf. The comfortable clubhouse lounge area is the ideal spot to relax and share with your fellow golfers your triumphs, or travails, on the course. The lounge is split into two sections, the top part incorporating the bar area — where a 40inch television screen will keep you informed of the latest sporting action via Sky Sports or ESPN — while the well area offers fine views of the golf course, as well as vistas of the Clyde coast. Meals, of course, can be ordered from the bar. Upstairs, is the main dining area where attentive staff are happy to take your order from an extensive and exciting menu which provides for most palates. But our chef’s culinary skills truly tantalize the tastebuds on Fine Dining nights — an experience once
20
a month when even the most fastidious of foodies can savour gastronomic delights. While being waited on, diners can lap up the stunning views from the restaurant area across the Firth of Clyde — at no extra cost, of course! Special occasions such as birthdays or anniversaries can be catered for, as well. Bar facilities are up to scratch, too. Our wellstocked bar offers a wide selection of beers and spirits, not to mention whisky blends to seduce the palate of most imbibers and assault the senses of those malt-minded affcionados. We also put a strong accent on social events, which include a Burns Supper, a gents’ prize-giving dinner, a Christmas dance and special appearances by popular singing artistes.

out & about Close by is Inverclyde Sports Centre, the world-famous institute where former Open champions Padraig Harrington and Paul Lawrie, among other celebrated golfers, come under the tutelege of legendary coach Bob Torrance and a facility where the elite of football managers such as Sir Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho and Marcello Lippi have gained, and imparted, knowledge of their chosen sport. The Vikingar Leisure Centre is on our doorstep, too, with swimming pool, fitness centre, steam rooms and sauna available to visitors. A 15-minute walk from the golf club takes you to Nardini, the renowned ice cream parlour and restaurant where no visit to Largs would be complete without calling in. There is also an abundance of history right on Largs Golf Club’s doorstep. For instance, why not drop in at our Honorary President the Earl of Glasgow’s country seat, Kelburn Castle, where the family line stretches back to the 13th century. Just minutes away, you can be transported back in time, too, by taking a short trip to The Pencil. On this spot, standing sentinel by the seashore, is a monument to the 1263 Battle of Largs, where the stalwarts of Scotland vanquished the Vikings and prevented them from enacting any shenanigans on these shores. This links up with the captivating Viking Festival in August, a fortnight of battle re-enactments, fun and frolics for all the family — maybe even an earthshattering RAF Typhoon display like the one performed last year. Then there’s 22
the Skelmorlie Aisle, a fascinating Renaissance canopied tomb which was incorporated into Largs Old Kirk in 1636. For spectacular views of the surrounding areas, then simply step on to Largs Pier, which was built in 1834 and given a £6million facelift in 2009. If you are fortunate, then you might catch sight of The Waverley, the last sea-going paddlesteamer in the world, as she pulls into Largs. Then there’s the famed ferry to Millport, the one-mile hop over the Firth of Clyde that is a traditional favourite with many visitors — not to mention a Mecca for cyclists — coming to Largs. Country and Western lovers are catered for, too, on the Cumbrae island during the summer with explosive performances from both sharpshooters and chanteuses. A craving for culture comes in the shape of The Cathedral of the Isles — claimed to be the smallest cathedral in Europe — and the historical Garrison House, where customs officers were stationed to run down smugglers. Largs Jazz Festival also sounds the right note for those with an inclination for music. Our link to the seas continues, for across the road from the 17th hole at Largs GC is the Largs Yacht Haven, where the 2010 World Lazer Championship will be held. The marina’s facilities are currently being upgraded and it is more than likely that the location, with ample restaurants and launching areas, will be utilised for the forthcoming 2014 Commonwealth Games being hosted by the City of Glasgow. So, make the most of your golf stay at the Riviera of Scotland, on the Firth of Clyde coast.

There are two official practice areas. The practice putting green sits at the car park entrance, while practice nets can be found to the left of the gents’ first tee. There are other zones which can be used for practice, but only if the course is quiet. These are: from out of bounds left of the 18th towards the 18th temporary green; from out of bounds left of the 18th fairway towards the second fairway; practice tee on second (maximum five iron) to left rough on second hole; bunker practice from bunker to west of old 17th green on to old 17th green only.
31
The Course HOLE-BY-HOLE GUIDE 1) HAYLIE (144 yards, par 3): Club selection is vital; too short and a tricky chip to the elevated green awaits, while out of bounds lurks for a wayward iron to the left. Many medal dreams have turned into a nightmare here.
6) CASTLE (366 yards, par 4): Dog-leg left but drive to elbow between trees guarding either side of fairway and play second slightly left to allow for slope on fairway. No hassle at The Castle, then.
2) REDHALL BANK (403 yards, par 4): Inviting drive from elevated tee to fairway, which runs left to right. Green opens up from right-hand side, but if you’re too long, it’s so long to your hopes of a par.
7) BOURTREES (408 yards, par 4): Spectacular view of Arran Hills. Drive up left half of fairway and avoid coming over deep, little bunker guarding right side of green. A birdie is music to your ears; sing out loud … the Hills are alive!
3) KILLINCRAIG (466 yards, par 5): Another drive from elevated tee. Don`t try to hit second too hard as burn protects front of green, which makes all but long-hitters play short. A five and you’re stayin’ alive. 4) LODGE (195 yards, par 3): Beware left greenside bunker which catches many a decent shot. This hole is no pushover and is stroke index 4. Three and easy, eh. 5) BACKSTONE (298 yards, par 4): Deceptive hole with steeply sloping green. Leave ball short and right of pin to avoid probable three-putt. A four is a good score and you’re knocking at the door.
32
8) SPITTLEFLAT (162 yards, par 3): Well-bunkered hole, three either side, so accurate shot required. Bucket and spade may be required. 9) WATERSIDE (386 yards, par 4): Dog-leg left but drive up right half of fairway. For second shot, beware trees on right and wide burn 80 yards short of green. A two-tier green, so be on right level. Halfway, time for a break, have a Kit-Kat. 10) ARRAN (401 yards, par 4): Another dog-leg left but drive up centre of fairway to avoid trees on left. Second shot has to carry a wide burn and flat ground to elevated green. A real sweater for a three, so take a four and don’t be an Arran nit.
11) JUBILEE (403 yards, par 4): Dog-leg right but only fly corner if big hitter. Green substantially elevated above fairway, so if second shot falls just short, ball rolls back to foot of slope. You’ll get plenty chipping practice here if not careful. 12) PENCIL (490 yards, par 5): Slight dog-leg left but drive down right half of fairway to avoid being blocked by large tree. Shot to green shorter than yardage indicates. Good birdie opportunity, so sharpen up at the Pencil. 13) RIGGS (382 yards, par 4) : Drive down middle, avoid shot to green finding bunker on left as green slopes away and easy to play out and run off other side. Unlucky 13 for some.

17
Course layout 14) MEIKLE CUMBRAE (147 yards, par 3): Well-bunkered, SEVEN of them in fact, so accuracy off tee required. Narrow green, hence miss left or right and you’re left with a tricky chip. A ‘Magnificent Seven’ you don’t want to see. 15) COCKLESHELLS (468 yards, par 4): Dog-leg left but drive down right half of fairway to avoid large tree at elbow. Long shot to green should be aimed right of centre. A par here and a burst of: Cockles and mussels alive, alive oh…
16) BOWENCRAIG (330 yards, par 4): Long-hitters can carry burn at 210 yards, leaving short wedge. Keep your drive straight or you’ll be Bowen out of contention. 17) SLEEPING WARRIOR (345 yards par 4): An accurate drive down right side of fairway is essential, as line to green is protected on left by a large tree overhanging a burn 40 yards short of green. This hole is a potential score buster, so stay wide awake.
18) KELBURN HOME (356 yards, par 4): Beware of burn which catches short drive. Second shot to green is slightly uphill to elevated green, which has two tiers, so club selection is critical as a three-putt is likely if you are not on the same level as the pin. Ah, now to the 19th Hole!
