About Largs Golf Club — a golf course enchanted by kings, castles and culture. What we are and what we do In essence, we are a members’ golf club serving the local community and surrounding area. We have a marvellous asset, both in terms of clubhouse location and course quality, and we are delighted to share that asset with a wider audience. Our chalet-style clubhouse, as you will see from the various photos in this brochure, offers breathtaking views over the Clyde Estuary. The venue is becoming increasingly popular for weddings and other family occasions, club and society meeting and seminars. The course, part of the historic Kelburn Castle Estate until the 1980s, is parkland but with strong coastal influences. There is also an abundance of wildlife, including buzzards, herons, swallows and

4

swifts plus the odd bewildered deer that literally springs into view occasionally. But we’re more than just a golf club … with a richness of history right on our doorstep. Just minutes away, you can be transported back in time with a visit to The Pencil — a monument dedicated to the 1263 Battle of Largs where King Alexander III of Scotland vanquished the Vikings of King Magnus Olafsson and King Haakon IV. Castles are nearby attractions, as well. The Earl of Glasgow’s 13th century country seat, Kelburn Castle, overshadows the sixth hole and the 17th century Knock Castle features further along the coast. We can also throw in a bouncy castle for the kids on the Largs prom!

Culture is taken care of, too — not least of all The Skelmorlie Aisle, a fascinating Renaissance canopied tomb which can be located smack in the middle of the town, or pay a visit to the Neolithic tomb closer to our golf club. Golf, however, remains our core function. Our website www.largsgolfclub.co.uk will demonstrate that the annual report from the prestigious Sports Turf Research Institute accords Head Greenkeeper Iain Barr

and his team the highest accolades for our course — an opinion reinforced when the recent British and International Golf Greenkeepers’ Association Scottish Championship was held here at Largs. Visiting parties are warmly welcomed and many groups return year on year. We offer flexible packages and have hire buggies available. We hope that you may experience this wonderful adventure with us soon.

Captain’s Foreword David Macdonald, Club Captain 2013-2014 May I say first of all that it is an honour to represent Largs Golf Club as Captain. I have served on many committees for the local community but regard this position as the pinnacle. It is a privilege to share my thoughts on this great club with you through our publication. Founded in 1891, we were among the first courses to appear on the North Ayrshire coast. The attraction then, as it is now, was fertile, welldrained ground and outstanding views over the Firth of Clyde. Since buying the course outright in 1981, there has been a year-on-year programme of improvements. We find ourselves now as the beneficiaries of fulsome compliments from members and visitors alike. I am proud to say my son is part of the excellent greenkeeping team, headed up by Iain Barr. The course condition has not gone unnoticed by the national bodies and we have proudly hosted their events in recent years, notably the Scottish Boys’ Strokeplay Championship, the British and International Greenkeepers Association Scottish Area Championship and the Scottish Super Seniors Championship. Although we have been in business since the 1890s, we are aware of trends in membership and golf generally. We realise we need to offer a more flexible approach than in years gone by. Consequently, we are willing hosts for a variety of external functions which help to maximise the use of our resources and keep things running successfully for the benefit of our members and the broader community of Largs. As a result, we are happy to discuss opening our facilities to outside groups and organisations looking for an inspirational venue here on the beautiful Clyde Coast. 6

Club History Largs Golf Club was founded in 1891 by a small number of local businessmen meeting in St Columba’s Church. A total of 30 members were duly enrolled, although still without a course on which to play. Eventually land was leased at the north end of the town at Routenburn and the renowned golf professional Willie Campbell from Ranfurly (see Willie's story at www.largsgolfclub.co.uk) was duly tasked with laying out a course. Just a month later, a nine-hole course was inaugurated and the first medal contested in June 1891. Annual subscription was 10 shillings and sixpence (52.5p). Two years later, the club moved to its present site at Kelburn where it remained a nine-hole lay-out until 1953 when the present 18-hole course was finally established. During the 60s, the clubhouse underwent several major changes culminating in the current eyecatching structure. Progress continued over the years and in 1981 the members bought out the lease from Lord Glasgow (the club’s Honorary President) which meant that the course truly belonged to the members. The club’s centenary year beckoned and to celebrate the occasion members again dug deep to finance further extensive development of the clubhouse. Many famous people have favoured our fairways, including such luminaries as our very own son of Largs Sam Torrance, his dad Bob, John Panton and Barclay Howard. Sam

still has an existing link with us. The buggy he buzzed about in when he captained Europe to Ryder Cup victory at The Belfry in 2002 was later donated to him — and it has been parked up at our club ever since that historic victory. If you ask kindly, maybe a ride in it could be arranged. What bragging rights would that be, eh? The club has had only eight professionals in John McKellar, Fred Bullock (who led the first two rounds of the 1960 British Open), Bert McMillan, Robin Fyfe, Robbie Stewart, Bob Collinson, Kenny Docherty and the present day Andy Fullen.

ClubhouseOpen for Business! The large, light and airy, chalet-style building was opened in the 1970s and provides uninterrupted views around the estuary. The Isles of Cumbrae, Bute and Arran are all in close range. Southward past Hunterston, you can see the heads of Ayr and the iconic landmark Ailsa Craig (Paddy’s Milestone) which is reckoned to be half distance between Glasgow and Belfast. To the west, you can pick up the outline of Argyll and the Kintyre Peninsula. The upstairs restaurant has been recently renovated to a very high standard and the staff provide a highly satisfying range of fare, mostly based on local produce. Downstairs, the bar and lounge have carried many tales of golfing exploits old and new. The two-level area is cleverly designed so that it feels intimate in quiet times and spacious enough to cater for larger groups.

Golf for Juniors

Largs Golf Club recognises the need to have a vibrant Junior Section. Our sponsored-child initiative has brought youngsters to the game at an early age. In this era of competing attractions for youngsters, it is a challenge to keep them focused on golf and the club is putting resource into facilities — particularly our new junior lounge — to make sure youngsters feel welcome and can play and stay in a safe, inclusive environment. There is a full coaching programme, covering all stages of golf development through junior membership, and a team of members and coaching staff dedicated to the ongoing success of the enterprise.

Hole-by-Hole Guide 1) HAYLIE (144 yards, par 3)

5) BACKSTONE (298 yards, par 4)

8) SPITTLEFLAT (162 yards, par 3)

Club selection is vital; too short and a tricky chip to the elevated green awaits, while out of bounds lurks for a wayward iron to the left. Dreams can turn to nightmares here.

Deceptive hole with steeply sloping green. Leave ball short and right of pin to avoid probable three-putt. Careful now — you’re on a slippery slope.

Well-bunkered hole, three either side, so accurate shot required. Bucket and spade may be required.

2) REDHALL BANK (403 yards, par 4)

9) WATERSIDE (386 yards, par 4)

6) CASTLE (366 yards, par 4)

Inviting drive from elevated tee to fairway, which runs left to right. Green opens up from right-hand side, but if you’re too long, it could be so long to par.

Dog-leg left but drive to elbow between trees guarding either side of fairway and play second slightly left to allow for slope on fairway. No hassle at The Castle, then.

Dog-leg left but drive up right half of fairway. For second shot, beware trees on right and wide burn 80 yards short of green. A two-tier green, so be on right level. Halfway, time for a break, have a Kit-Kat.

3) KILLINCRAIG (466 yards, par 5)

7) BOURTREES (408 yards, par 4)

10) ARRAN (401 yards, par 4)

Another drive from elevated tee. Don’t try to hit second too hard as burn protects front of green, which makes all but long-hitters play short. It can be murder at the Killin’.

Spectacular view of Arran Hills. Drive up left half of fairway and avoid coming over deep, little bunker guarding right side of green. A birdie is music to your ears; sing out loud … the Hills are alive!

Another dog-leg left but drive up centre of fairway to avoid trees on left. Second shot has to carry a wide burn and flat ground to elevated green. A real sweater for a three, so take a four and don’t be an Arran nit.

4) LODGE (195 yards, par 3) Beware left greenside bunker which catches many a decent shot. This hole is no pushover and is stroke index 4. Three and easy, eh.

11) JUBILEE (403 yards, par 4)

14) MEIKLE CUMBRAE (147 yards, par 3)

16) BOWENCRAIG (330 yards, par 4)

Dog-leg right but only fly corner if big hitter. Green substantially elevated above fairway, so if second shot falls just short, ball rolls back to foot of slope. Jubilation or desolation beckons.

Well-bunkered, seven of them in fact, so accuracy off tee required. Narrow green, hence miss left or right and you’re left with a tricky chip. Sand and deliver!

Long-hitters can carry burn at 210 yards, leaving short wedge. Keep your drive straight or you’ll be Bowen out of contention. 17) SLEEPING WARRIOR (345 yards par 4)

15) COCKLESHELLS (468 yards, par 4)

12) PENCIL (490 yards, par 5) Slight dog-leg left but drive down right half of fairway to avoid being blocked by large tree. Shot to green shorter than yardage indicates. Good birdie opportunity, so sharpen up at the Pencil.

An accurate drive down right side of fairway is essential, as line to green is protected on left by a large tree overhanging a burn 40 yards short of green. A potential score-buster, so stay wide awake.

Dog-leg left but drive down right half of fairway to avoid trees at elbow. Long shot to green should be aimed right of centre. A Cockleshells hero perhaps?

18) KELBURN HOME (356 yards, par 4)

13) RIGGS (382 yards, par 4) Drive down middle, avoid shot to green finding bunker on left as green slopes away and easy to play out and run off other side. Unlucky 13 for some.

Beware of burn which catches short drive. Second shot to green is slightly uphill to elevated green, which has two tiers, so club selection is critical as a threeputt is likely if you are not on the same level as the pin. Ah, now to the 19th hole!

Our Neighbours Largs Golf Course is the centre point of the most significant one-mile radius for sport and leisure anywhere in Scotland. Kelburn Country Centre (www.kelburnestate.com) lies to the southern and eastern boundaries and includes equestrianism, falconry, archery, walking and forestcraft among its attractions. The Centre has also become an acknowledged host of boutique festivals. There are two marinas within a short walk of the golf course. The longer established Largs Yacht Haven — www.yachthavens.com/largs and Fairlie Quay Marina- www.fairliequay.co.uk — both benefit from the proximity of the Isles of Cumbrae in diffusing strong onshore winds and assisting safe access. A mile to the north lies Sportscotland’s national training centre at Inverclyde (www.nationalcentreinverclyde.org.uk/Home). There are multi-sport facilities at the centre, mostly available to locals and visitors alike. The extensive golf facility has recently been appointed

20

Scottish Golf’s Development centre, with coaching conducted through the Bob Torrance. It is also available as a practice facility for club golfers. Many Largs Golf Club members take advantage of that. A short ferry hop across the north channel will see you in Cumbrae where you can cycle around to your heart’s content, visit the watersports centre and aquarium, or play a round with our good friends at Millport Golf Club (www.millportgolfclub.co.uk). Just outside of the mile radius to the north lies Routenburn Golf Club (www.kaleisure.com/golf/ routenburn-golf-course.html). Council-run with a private club operating from a commanding stone clubhouse, the course will always be associated with the Torrance family. No visit to Largs would be complete, though, without dropping in on Nardini — the famous ice cream parlour where the frozen fancies even melted the heart of the ‘Iron Lady’, former Prime Minister Maggie Thatcher.

Kelburn Estate Our course lies within the historic estate grounds of the 13th century Kelburn Castle which was thought to be built around the year 1200. Various additions have taken place over the centuries with the latest Victorian wing having been added between 1879 and 1880. The Castle has been occupied by the Clan Boyle since first built and is the oldest such castle to be continuously occupied by a single family. The title Earl of Glasgow was created for Lord David Boyle in 1703 and his estate settlement expanded to include lands further afield in Ayrshire and Renfrewshire. The Kelburn Glen with its waterfalls and deep gorges is regarded as one of Scotland’s most beautiful woodlands and leads to spectacular views over the islands of the Firth of Clyde.

Firth of Clyde The Firth itself is one of the largest areas of sheltered deep water in the British Isles and has been a top sailing location for more than 100 years. It continues to attract increasing numbers of boat owners, sailors cruising in their own yachts, and those seeking a charter yacht holiday or a sailing tuition course. Up until 1263, the waters were patrolled by Viking invaders until they were finally ousted by the rumbustious locals. That event is still marked with gusto during the annual Viking Festival. When visiting Largs Kelburn there is every chance you will catch sight of the famous PS Waverley — the world’s last ocean going paddle steamer. The iconic vessel docks at Largs Pier as part of its regular Summer schedule and remains a highly visible and popular attraction.
