lthough it seems so long ago, only two months have passed since we celebrated the deserving winners and finalists at our Annual Dinner and Business Star Awards. What an amazing evening. What a tremendous opportunity to see the wealth of talent, innovation, business acumen and sheer hard work our area boasts. It is an evening of great pride – pride in our exceptional business community, pride for those winning businesses and their teams and pride in the Chamber being able to shine the light on those who contribute such a boost to our local economy and make Perthshire such an exciting and vital place to live and work. Sub-consciously we are all ambassadors for this amazing part of Scotland in our day to day business dealings. Things remain challenging but we have a lot in our favour. Our centrally located high quality offering makes it easy to champion why businesses should locate/ relocate/remain/invest in this area. Of course some things could be better. Things such as rural broadband would help us compete on the global stage where our offerings are attractive and sought-after – but we need to be able to showcase them and your Chamber will continue to lobby for a wider, faster, first rate service. We continue to concentrate our focus on the many positives Perthshire has to offer the business community while proactively doing what we can to improve those areas requiring attention in order for the local economy to flourish. We do this alongside our members and partners and look forward to working ever closer with you in the months and years ahead.

I
am delighted to present our latest edition of our InCommerce magazine and it’s terrific that there is never any shortage of new and exciting initiatives and achievements in Perthshire that we are able to share. The magazine is created to be of interest, of course, to our valued members and those active within the local business community. In addition to this, we made the conscious decision to make it of interest to those visiting the area. We aim to reflect the high quality of life offered in Perthshire and showcase the raft of economic development opportunities and a realistic and attractive profile of just how much Perthshire has to offer. Our members’ survey will be received by all our members and I wholeheartedly encourage you to take the short amount of time required to respond. Questions cover topics such as training needs, international issues, skills gaps, youth employment, startup businesses and mentoring – as well as sector specific queries. I understand that time is precious and would really appreciate your input which can directly determine what we focus on and which areas we identify for development. Wishing you a successful 2015. CHAMBER GETS HOOKED ON FISHING AT SALMON SEASON LAUNCH BREAKFAST
The traditional Scottish angling ceremony, organised by the Hilton in conjunction with Dunkeld and Birnam Angling Association, the Dunkeld and Birnam Tourist Association and Perthshire Chamber of Commerce and supported by the Tay District Salmon Fisheries Board (TDSFB) and the Tay Foundation, marked the start of the 2015 season. Dozens of Chamber members enjoyed the riverside reception which was a joint business and community event incorporating a hearty breakfast followed by the formal opening of the river, accompanied by music and pipers, with the first cast being taken by Paul Young. William Jack, chairman of the TDSFB, said: “The new season heralds an important milestone in the protection of earlyrunning spring salmon. New Scottish Parliament legislation, which came into effect on January 9, requires that all salmon caught by anglers prior to April are released back into the water. This will make little difference to the majority of anglers, who already adhere to the Tay Conservation Code, as in the last five years over 90 % of the salmon caught before April have been released. Now that releasing fish during this period is a statutory requirement, we look forward to consistent conservation up and down the system.” Mr Jack continued: “It is encouraging to note that
4
THE PERTHSHIRE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BUSINESS MAGAZINE • SPRING 2015 www.perthshirechamber.co.uk
the provisional figure for salmon reported caught on the Tay by anglers to the end of March in 2014 is the highest since 1986. It is fair to assume that catch and release in the last few years has contributed to this improvement. It is vital that we retain our spring conservation measures, and the new legislation will help formalise this.” Dr David Summers, Director of the TDSFB, added: “We have been greatly encouraged by the improvement in spring salmon catches in the last couple of years, so there is a great sense of anticipation as to what the spring fishing of 2015 is going to be like. The new conservation measures are widely welcomed by anglers and ghillies and will not affect this enthusiasm. Quite the contrary.” Mike McDiarmid, President of the Perthshire Chamber of Commerce commented: “I am delighted that so many people gathered to celebrate this jewel in Perthshire’s crown – a major contributor to the local economy. “Perthshire is one of the country’s premier fishing locations and the River Tay is famous across the world. “The area’s fishing industry supplies important domestic and international markets for some of Scotland’s highest quality food products. Fishing is also a key tourist attraction for visitors from across the UK and overseas and this helps support Perthshire’s economy and jobs, particularly in remote and fragile areas that may otherwise struggle to survive in today’s tough climate. “Fishing is often perceived as a traditional pursuit of a select few, when the reality is that a growing number of people from all walks of life – of all ages – are participating in, and enjoying, this activity. One could also imagine that only large estates and sporting agents benefit, however the public are now coming to realise the value of country sports, including fishing, and associated land management practices.”
Steve MacDougall, The Courier
Paul Young, the well-known Scottish television actor and presenter, opened the salmon fishing season on the River Tay in fine style at the annual Chamber breakfast at Hilton Dunkeld House.

IT SUPPORT FOR RURAL BUSINESSES Are you a rural business looking to improve your use of IT? The improvement could be to support any one of a number of business requirements e.g. introducing remote working, developing online ordering, managing your customer data, improving your social media presence. If so, there may be help at hand. Scottish Enterprise and Scottish Chambers of Commerce are together delivering the CREATE programme which will provide rural businesses with advice on how they can make better use of IT to develop and grow. The CREATE programme offers businesses the following funded services: 1. An independent review session with an IT expert. These experts have been selected from recognised IT support businesses across Scotland. 2. The development of a tailored action plan explaining how IT improvements could best support your business. 3. Access to training materials
further information, please email Fiona McCann fmccann@ scottishchambers.org.uk or Perthshire Chamber contact detail if you wish. Rural areas typically have poor access to broadband, an issue which is being progressively tackled through the Scottish Government’s Digital Scotland programme. Evidence shows that even where effective connectivity is available, the take up and exploitation of the service is poor, resulting in significant benefit to businesses remaining unrealised. The CREATE programme is therefore running in parallel with the implementation of Superfast Broadband across Scotland’s rural communities to encourage businesses to use technology effectively. If the timing of the CREATE programme coincides with broadband improvements within your area, what better time to access advice on how this improved technology can be harnessed to best effect? What defines ‘rural’ within this programme? Businesses outside of the four cities of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee are eligible to register. The Scottish programme is part of a wider support programme being delivered across Europe. An added benefit for business is the potential to engage with similar businesses / suppliers across the continent through a common register.
4. Access to technology to enable testing 5. Further dedicated support from the IT expert should you wish to go ahead and implement improvements. Many businesses across Scotland have started benefitting from this service, with the feedback telling us that face to face support from a local IT expert is exceptionally valuable. Fully funded business-to-business advice, in the comfort of your own offices, at the timing of your choice – we put your needs first.
Please contact Perthshire Chamber for further information or to be involved on info@perthshirechamber.co.uk or call 01738 448325. www.create-nwe.eu @CreateNWE

NEW ADDITION TO CHAMBER TEAM Now working alongside CE Vicki Unite at the Perth office is Hannah Stott, a recent Graduate from The University of St Andrews. Hannah said: “I am delighted to be working with the Perthshire Chamber of Commerce as Administrator and Events Coordinator. Previous to working with the Chamber I was part of the Service team at a local Best Western Hotel, working on various events. Being heavily involved with the Business Star Awards shortly after I joined provided me with a great insight into the diverse work that Perthshire Chamber of Commerce and I am thoroughly looking forward to the huge variety of events we have planned for 2015.” Having graduated with a BSc in Geology in June 2014, Hannah is currently looking to further her experience in the
Energy and Mining sectors as an Exploration Geologist, or in a related Geotechnical role. Hannah added: “After graduating I completed an Internship as a Seismic Processor for WesternGeco of Schlumberger, where I used a variety of geophysical software, working on pioneering new projects for major clients. I have also recently completed work experience with Breedon Aggregates working on a quarry expansion project where I gained experience with LSS software and valuable insight into the quarrying and planning processes.” Vicki said: “Hannah brings with her many valuable skills and is a very welcome and valuable member of the Chamber team and I would highly recommend her. However, it would be terrific to see her in a role that utilises her skills and obvious passion and enthusiasm in her chosen field.”

BINN GROUP BUILDS ON CONSTRUCTION UPTURN
HARDIES CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS
A recent upturn in the construction industry locally has resulted in increased activity for companies involved in various support services.
Hardies Property & Construction Consultants celebrated 100 Years in business at St John’s Kirk of Perth with a number of Clients and Business colleagues. They are extremely grateful and honoured to have been extended the courtesy of holding their Centenary Celebration in the Kirk to mark this historic occasion.
Binn Group, the country’s leading independent recycling and waste management company, has been working closely with builders and developers to ensure the waste produced on sites across Perthshire is both minimised and segregated at source to help reduce costs, maximise recycling potential and fully comply with legislation.
Gordon Butt commented: “It is a real achievement to celebrate the firm’s 100 years in business and we were delighted that so many guests joined us on the night. In Perth we have been supported by many other firms, organisations, and individuals for which we are extremely grateful.
Different stages of site clearance, site development and construction result in a changing and constant stream of waste, ranging from stone, brick, timber, glass and metal to polythene, plastic, cardboard and soil. “There are different waste materials coming from sites at the various stages of the construction process,” explained Binn Group commercial manager Jim Brown, “and Binn Group has been working with the industry for many years to tailor make a full waste management, handling and recycling service for individual clients. “Growing confidence in the market has seen increased activity in site clearance, redevelopment and new build in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors,” he added. “Binn Group has prepared for – and reacted to – that upturn by investing in new vehicles, plant and equipment to ensure we have the capability, both in terms of vehicles, skips and materials as well as manpower, to provide a raft of waste management services to support the smooth running of the construction industry.”
“Hardies has changed greatly over the years and must be congratulated for all their efforts during the last 100 years. The firm as a whole has survived many challenging years including the two World Wars, several recessions, as well as the numerous highs and lows of the Scottish and British economy. “The founder John Gordon Hardie started in practice as an ‘Ordained Surveyor and Valuator’ at 92 High Street, Dunfermline, in November 1913. He would, I am sure, have been very proud of what we have achieved in both Perth and beyond over the last century. We look forward to continuing to develop the company, to provide property and construction related consultancy services for many years to come.” Hardies Property & Construction Consultants are now one of the largest multi-disciplinary surveying practices in Scotland with a total of 14 offices and employ approximately 100 staff
Mr Brown highlighted issues such as the evolving Waste (Scotland) Regulations and the soon to be introduced legislation creating a cashless system for scrap metal processing as examples of areas where Binn Group can advise and support businesses. “The construction industry is just one sector which has to look at streamlining its waste management protocols and we can help establish the best possible system for them, supported by a tailormade waste management, collection and recycling service.”

INTERFACE INNOVATION VOUCHERS PROVIDE SCOTTISH SMES WITH £3M IN FUNDING Trying to get a product or service to market is difficult enough without taking advantage of any help that’s available. So when it comes to undertaking research to get your idea to the next stage, why wouldn’t you turn to Scotland’s world leading academics and tap into the expertise that’s on your doorstep? Funding for this R&D is available to Scottish SMEs in a number of forms, one of the most established being the Scottish Funding Council’s Standard Innovation Vouchers and Follow-on Innovation Vouchers – both of which Interface administers. Interface – The knowledge connection for business – matches organisations across Scotland to the right academic expertise helping to improve products, develop services and in turn increase productivity and profits. Introduced as a pilot in 2009, Innovation Vouchers help businesses to collaborate with academic partners, and are intended to encourage those who haven’t previously collaborated or received previous joint funding. In 2012 SFC (in conjunction with Scottish Enterprise and Highland & Islands Enterprise) introduced the Follow-on Innovation Voucher scheme to encourage further collaborations between businesses and HEIs that had previously worked together and had received funding from either an Innovation Voucher, SEEKIT Feasibility Study or a Business Innovation Grant. Demand for these two funding options has increased exponentially since they were introduced and across the two Voucher schemes more than £3m has been committed to projects.

INCREASE IN DEMAND FOR WINTER TYRES Rapid Tyre Services have seen an increase in the demand for winter tyres during the last year. With skidding causing 48% of accidents during the winter months, more and more people are choosing to make the switch. Winter tyres are not just for Christmas! When temperatures drop below 7°C the tread compound on standard tyres starts to harden causing them to lose grip. The tread compound in winter tyres heats up at a lower rolling temperature and they contain a larger percentage of natural rubber creating more grip in the colder weather. They have wider treads which allows them to provide more traction on snow and ice, providing a far superior grip than standard tyres. They have deeper, thicker treads which also assist in preventing aquaplaning. This is paramount when considering that accidents caused by wet road conditions during winter increases by 267%, according to the Department of Transport Road Accident Statistics. Waiting for the first snowfall before switching is often too late. With temperatures often remaining in single figures from October till March there is a growing recognition amongst drivers for the importance in changing tyres. Braking distances are also reduced by up to 20% resulting in a safer drive all round. Christmas may be over but winter is here to stay. Rapid Tyre Services are dedicated to providing excellent customer service. They offer a mobile tyre fitting service meaning they will come to you, making switching tyres even easier.

PARTNERSHIPS ENHANCE CHAMBER OFFERING
Platinum Partners
P
erthshire Chamber of Commerce is hugely grateful to the on-going support offered by their raft of committed Sponsor Partners.
The backing of key Platinum, Gold and Silver Partners has allowed the Chamber to function on a level otherwise unachievable. Their input guarantees an enhanced service for all our members in terms of the range of events, quality of service and dedicated support. PCC Chief Executive, Vicki Unite, explained the importance of these Partnerships and what they bring to the Chamber, as well as the benefits for those businesses signing up to a Partnership package. “The role of the Chamber is to support local businesses and the extent of that support would be severely restricted were it not for our generous Platinum, Gold and Silver Partners, working in addition to the support of our membership as a whole,” she said. “We introduced these tiered packages in response to the recession where we needed to make our sponsorship opportunities more accessible – particularly taking into account a huge percentage of Perthshire businesses are micro-businesses. “By creating these packages, which provide a core of common benefits – but have the ability to be fully tailored to the Partners’ requirements – we are able to offer a level of service that is closely aligned to the businesses’ marketing and promotional activities and overall objectives,” explained Vicki. “The support that we receive from our Partners also allows us to subsidise our costs and reduce fee increases while continuously growing our service offering and support for members.”
Gold Partners
Vicki explained that the benefits package was not all one way and stressed that Sponsor Partners could capitalise on both raised profiles and on-going publicity through their year-long relationship, increasing their standing in the local business community. “Our Sponsor Partners are all businesses that are well established in Perth and Kinross and want to support the rest of the business community in the area – especially our wealth of SMEs and business start-ups,” said Vicki. “They are putting something back into the local business sector and we are extremely grateful for their foresight and generosity,” she added. “Perthshire Chamber of Commerce punches well above its weight and that is due in no small measure to our Partners. The level and breadth of service we deliver would be much reduced without their backing.”
Silver Partners
Vicki is happy to discuss Sponsor Partner packages with both existing and potential supporters at any time. “It really is a partnership and all our Platinum, Gold and Silver partners deserve the grateful thanks of the Board, staff and membership of the Chamber.” KEEPSAFE Storage Centres

L
ooking back at the 2014 market is a useful benchmark against what may happen this year. It was exciting in many ways with The Ryder Cup and The Commonwealth Games but the Referendum was a key focus for the property industry. Uncertainty equals inactivity so it was no surprise that after an unsettled few months the market stabilised and indeed the PSPC recorded their highest sales for the year in November. It is anticipated that the volume of transactions will increase this year and values should remain stable with some possibility of growth particularly in a typical family house.

Some uncertainty remains (particularly for higher value properties) over the introduction on 1st April of the Land and Buildings Transaction Tax (LBTT). A progressive tax seems fairer but Scotland could be disadvantaged due to significant differences from the rest of the UK following George Osborne’s well-timed Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) changes in the Autumn statement. The Scottish rates may not however be set in stone and we wait to see if the supposedly fiscal neutral policy is amended now that Mr Osborne has left a smaller hole in the finances to fill. The Scottish Government (within their five year review) have also boosted confidence by endorsing independent Home Reports as having “a positive impact for buyers and sellers”. So we can look forward with confidence in 2015 that property remains a sound investment and that Home Reports continue to provide a key role in retaining buyer confidence.

FLEXIBLE AND EASY STORAGE SOLUTIONS FOR YOUR BUSINESS…
COMMAND-AND-CONTROL VS A COACHING APPROACH “Do it this way” “Because I say so” This is the Command-and-Control style of management, familiar to army officers, parents and many managers. It’s effective in a crisis or with straightforward tasks. It works well when your main objective is immediate compliance. It’s also often useful with new recruits. Not so useful for complex tasks, developing staff, getting their ownership, or encouraging them to use their initiative. With over 25 years of industry experience, Keepsafe Storage Centres has more experience in solving business storage issues than any other company in the area. Streamline your office, de-clutter and make better use of your space, or store archived documentation securely at easily accessible premises located in both Perth and Dundee.
“What are you trying to achieve?” “What solutions can you think of?” “What would be the consequences of doing that?”
Anne Smith, managing director of Keepsafe Storage Centre commented: “If you are out-growing your current office premises, selfstorage can provide a simple and cost effective solution that will help you and your business grow while keeping overheads low. We’ve been supporting businesses all over Tayside for over 25 years with a range of options that are accessible 24-hoursa-day and completely secure.”
These are examples of using a Coaching approach. If you want to develop your staff, and you have time to have a coaching conversation with them, then they will show more motivation and initiative. When you consistently use this style, staff eventually stop coming to you to solve all their problems and start proposing solutions themselves.
Rowan Consultancy’s ILM-Development training programme “Manager as Coach” runs in Perth on Tuesday 3rd March. You will learn a simple coaching model and practise using it on each other, so that you go away able to use a coaching approach with your subordinates, ultimately freeing up your time to be more strategic and less operational.

SUPPORTING STUDENTS THROUGH SCHOLARSHIPS Charitable business people raised around £2,000 at Perthshire Chamber of Commerce Business Star Awards 2014 in order to help launch a new Chamber Scholarship at Perth College UHI. InCommerce hears about the opportunities for businesses to help create new opportunities for students by getting involved in this exciting scholarship programme.
P
erth College UHI scholarship programme was launched in September 2008 to support some of our most talented students to thrive and reach their full potential. The scholarship scheme, managed by the Perth College UHI Development Trust, provides thousands of pounds of support each year, with over 30 Scholarships awarded in the current academic year. Awards of up to £2000 per year are given to successful students to support them in their studies. Scholarships can also include additional training and invaluable work experience; giving students a unique opportunity to develop work based skills and improves their career prospects. We would like to see the scholarship scheme continue to grow so that we can support more students and help businesses develop a highly skilled workforce for the future and achieve greater success.

EDUCATION
The awards are open to any Perth College UHI student who is enrolled on a full time course. They are given to enthusiastic and hardworking students who have a passion to succeed and are committed to their studies. Students who are awarded a scholarship are ambassadors for Perth College UHI in the community, reflecting the excellent teaching and learning experience they gain from being a student at the College. Awards are also available to students who are experiencing challenging financial circumstances and would benefit from a little extra help. There are, of course, fantastic benefits for our scholarship students. In addition to the financial support, for many students the greatest benefit is to gain valuable work experience and have the opportunity to see what it would be like in a real work environment. The benefactor awarding the scholarship, is often an expert in the student’s chosen field of study, and can mentor them and pass on a wealth of experience. This opportunity gives students a foot in the door to an organisation and the possibility of employment at the end of their studies. Some scholarships offer unique opportunities which students would normally only be able to dream of and this greatly enhances their CV. However, when asked, the majority of scholarship students say that the confidence they gained through work experience and mentoring was the most valuable aspect. The scholarship programme is also a great opportunity for Perth College UHI to work in partnership with local businesses. By taking part in the scheme, our partners have more diverse opportunities to promote their businesses. Each company offering a scholarship will be promoted on our website and in our scholarship brochure to highlight the partnership and enhance their company’s reputation. By helping students, they are investing in Scotland’s economic future and building a highly skilled workforce for their industry in the future. Businesses also have the chance to recruit graduates to meet their operational needs, evident by the number of scholarship students who are employed by their benefactors after graduating. Having a student in the workplace can bring fresh insight to a business’s operation and planning. At Perth College UHI, we are continually trying to build stronger relationships with industry and this partnership gives organisations the chance to work more closely with us and our students in a variety of ways. Some benefactors contribute by speaking to students about their business or career, while others hold masterclasses in their field of expertise.
the benefactors who will award the most talented and promising student. In November we hold a scholarship lunch to celebrate the achievements of the successful students and to thank the benefactors for their generous support. Scholarships start from £250 and can be up to £2000, however most awards are for £1000. These funds are given to the students in three instalments and can be used for equipment or course materials if required. In some cases the students use the funds to travel to their work experience placement. This is a fantastic programme for all concerned. Students benefit from a financial boost, valuable work experience and an enhanced CV. Benefactors can develop their workforce, recruit new staff and promote their organisation and for Perth College UHI, we can create better links with industry and increase opportunities for our students. We are continually looking to attract new scholarships for all areas of the curriculum and would welcome the opportunity to speak with anyone wishing to hear more about the scheme. For further information on the scholarship programme please contact Fiona Leslie at Fiona.leslie@perth.uhi.ac.uk or call 01738 877215
For Perth College UHI, it means we can offer better opportunities to our students who are at the heart of everything we do. It helps us prepare students for a real working environment and gives the students the encouragement to go on to achieve more.
How does it work? Each year once the scholarship has been confirmed, Perth College UHI promotes the awards to their students. The applications are then shortlisted and interviewed by

COACH FRIENDLY STATUS FOR PERTH Perth & Kinross Council are pursuing Coach Friendly Status for Perth City as part of their commitment to the Tourism sector. Coach Friendly Status is awarded to destinations that show clear commitment to understanding the requirements of the coach, its passengers and driver. The award raises the profile of the destination to the wider coach tourism industry both nationally and overseas boosting the economic potential of the City. PKC are working with the Confederation of Passenger Transport UK – Scotland to raise the profile of Perth City to coach operators and extend their stay in Perth City Centre. Achieving Coach Friendly Status is one outcome of the Perthshire Tourism Partnerships Tourism Strategy & Action Plan. The Great Britain Tourism Survey for visitors to Scotland who used an ‘Organised Coach Tour’ as their
mode of transport between 2008 -2011 demonstrated that there were 362,000 trips, 1.5 million nights and spend of £96m per annum between 2008-2011. This stable performance was attributed to the growth in the staycation market and the demographic having more stable incomes. The Perthshire Tourism Partnership Travel Trade Subgroup are attending Visit Scotland Expo 2015 in Aberdeen with the aim of launching Coach Friendly Status at this event.

Businesses can achieve World Host recognition by training 50% of their frontline staff. The course can be funded, subject to eligibility using the ILA Scotland scheme. Skills Development Scotland also offer funding opportunities for those not registered with ILA.
For more information visit www.worldhost.com Councillor John Kellas, Convener of the Enterprise and Infrastructure Committee said: “Good customer service is a skill, it is something that needs to be worked at and continually developed. When visitors see that businesses are investing in their customer service they will feel assured that they are going to be treated with respect and courtesy. In this tough financial climate, businesses that can be seen to go the extra mile – particularly independent businesses - will have a far greater chance developing their reputation as a company that care about their customers and will be more likely to see them return or tell their friends.” Michael White, owner of the Willows Coffee Shop in Perth and some of his staff have attended the training previously. Michael said: “I found the World Host Training to be very informative and delivered in a way that makes it easy to learn more about customer service For more information on World Host Customer Service Training in your area contact Suzanne Cumiskey, Regeneration Project Officer, Perth & Kinross Council on 01738 475731 or email scumiskey@pkc.gov.uk

YEAR OF FOOD AND DRINK 2015 Year of Food and Drink Scotland 2015 is a Scottish Government initiative led in partnership by EventScotland, VisitScotland and Scotland Food & Drink. The aim of Year of Food and Drink 2015 is to spotlight, celebrate and promote Scotland’s natural larder and quality produce to visitors and develop Scotland’s reputation as a Land of Food and Drink. Food and drink is an important part of Scottish cultural identity and heritage and is a key strength in promoting Scotland as a holiday destination. 49% of people visiting Scotland want to try local food and two-thirds of Scotland’s visitors think that quality food is an important factor when deciding where to go on holiday. The main objectives Year of Food and Drink 2015 are
• • • • •
To increase contribution to the overall value of the sector from tourism and events To sustain and build upon the momentum generated by Homecoming Scotland 2014 in further developing Scotland’s reputation as a Land of Food and Drink To increase use and promotion of Scottish produce across the tourism and events industry To increase level of satisfaction with food and drink amongst visitors to Scotland To increase level of satisfaction with food and drink amongst event attendees
Perthshire is ready to make the most of this year-long celebration with a number of food events. The region is famed for its delicious seasonal larder and its variety of high quality, independent food and drink producers. Visitors to the area this year will be spoilt for choice by an array of foodie experiences to choose from and events throughout the year focusing on the local produce on offer. The Tummel and Tay Festival returns in May celebrating the food, drink and culture of Highland Perthshire, last year’s programme centred on whisky and included a food fair, music sessions, theatre, and photography exhibition http://tummelandtayfestival.co.uk.
The Solas Festival takes place in June. This familyfriendly, mid-summer arts festival mixes music, theatre, debate, literature and much more. Food and drink plays a big part in the festival, and the emphasis is on local produce, some of it even grown in the nearby fields www.solasfestival.co.uk. The Scone Palace Chilli Festival takes place in September. The weekend event brings together chilli goods from around the UK. Look out for chilli-flavoured chocolates, jams and preserves alongside a selection of home-grown chilli plants from the Palace’s own garden. Chilli beer has even featured in previous years http:// scone-palace.co.uk. Perth’s Farmers Market is a regular fixture in the city’s events calendar, with its popularity such that the first Farmers Market Food Festival took place in October 2014. The Food Festival returns again this year, filling the city centre with some of the finest suppliers and retailers from the local area, and throwing the spotlight on Perthshire’s abundant natural larder, from game to soft fruits and everything in between www. perthfarmersmarket.co.uk. REAL BUZZ AT PERTH AIRPORT
D
id you know Perth Airport is the most popular general aviation airport in Scotland? With its central geographic location and its three runways – one of which is grass – it is unique in Scotland. What is also different about Perth Airport is that it is a real community with big and small players, commercial and voluntary, all working together to provide something special in Perth. The airport is owned by Morris Leslie Group who bought the site in 1997 and it’s been growing ever since. The business park started with two businesses employing 37 people and now has 46 commercial tenants employing over 350. Investment over the years has created 60 private residential homes, workshops and serviced offices. Public accommodation welcomes students, contractors and visitors alike with the 40 room Skylodge Hotel, 11 room accommodation block and 14 studio apartments. There will be even more to attract visitors when 50 holiday log cabins are completed. The airport itself attracts private pilots from the local area and around the world and it all has to work safely and smoothly. The airport engineering operations are run by ACS Aviation (ACS) which is also responsible for the friendly tower service, the fuel and fire service. The main hangar (Hangar 1) has for many years been home to the Scottish Aero Club (SAC), the oldest and largest flying club in Scotland, and at present houses about 85 varied private aircraft – including no fewer than three replica Spitfires and the big red Virgin balloon. The Club has over 180 pilot members (many aircraft are either shared or syndicated) as well as nearly 100 additional associate members. There is a well-appointed clubroom, with adjoining offices and briefing rooms. Two independent flight training organisations are closely associated with the SAC, providing instruction on flexwing and fixed-wing microlights (The Scottish Microlight Flight Centre, or SMFC) and gyrocopters (The Gyrocopter Experience). Helicopter training is provided by Kingsfield Helicopters and ACS offers both private and commercial pilot training. Go to www.flyperth.co.uk for full details. “Take Off”, a new charitable trust established in 2012 with the aim of encouraging personal development through learning to fly has already put 16 selected local youngsters on their first steps on the flying ladder, with many already flying solo and one a very proud licence holder at only 18 years old. A unique partnership between ACS Aviation and Air Service Training (AST) at Perth Airport has produced the only structured modular course in Scotland for commercial flight training with engineering and pilot training on the same site.

A training hangar – filled with complete aircraft and large and small aircraft sections as well as fully equipped training rooms – is home to AST which has an 83 year history and has been resident in Perth since 1960. Since 1996 it has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Perth College UHI allowing them to jointly develop internationally popular aircraft engineering awards up to degree level. As a successful engineering training and consultancy company it generates economic value for Perth through its operations and by attracting students who are supported by their government or large corporations to live and study in Perth. The location of the training facilities at an active airport is a big draw to students who can feel even more part of the community living on the airport site. Perth Airport also houses the headquarters of the wellknown Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance (SCAA). Their distinctive helicopter has now been called out around 500 times to save lives in Perthshire and across Scotland. The charity also operates a 4x4 Rapid Response Vehicle which responds to local car accidents and emergencies. While being part of the emergency network across Scotland, SCAA helps to make the Airport a safer place by having expert professionals able to assist with airfield incidents and adding depth and experience to the overall flight safety structure. But the benefit is two way, as the other organisations at the airport are keen fundraisers and volunteers contributing to SCAA’s success. If you’d like to visit the airport, go to www.perthairport.eu
Additional notes AST: In 2010 alone it was estimated that the operation and students contributed up to £1.5 million to the economy of Perth. Since then AST has grown further, both through its consultancy operations abroad and by attracting large contracts of student training to Perth. “Take Off”, for 8 young people to have 10 hours of dual flight training. It is part funded by PKC with the rest being raised by SAC through sponsorship. Current sponsors include Vector Aerospace, Scottish Microlight Flight Centre, Bond Offshore Helicopters, Pooleys Flight Equipment and Weave Digital. All four Perth Schools are included in the scheme. Perth Airport has become accustomed to welcoming high profile figures such as the Queen, President George Bush, and Prince Andrew.

world population and make the most of available resources without ruining the planet. A key strand of James Hutton Institute’s research underpins Scotland’s highly successful food and drink industry, whether they are big corporations or small, independent businesses. Take whisky, for example. Scotland’s iconic drink accounts for a large part of the increase in food and drink exports. Current data from the Scotch Whisky Association shows overseas sales of £4.3bn, which represents about 85% of Scottish food and drink exports and nearly a quarter of the British total. It is clear that whisky is not just delicious and

”
You might not have heard of our scientists but we are sure you have heard of many of the products we have helped develop. For instance, Iconic brand Ribena only uses blackcurrants bred at the James Hutton Institute, and the leading organic potato variety in the UK was also bred by our researchers in collaboration with industry partners. good for you in measured doses, (or should that be gills), but a cornerstone of the Scottish economy. Underpinning whisky production is barley, and the quality of the crop and the reliability of supply to the local industry is crucial. Barley has a long history of use by humans. Indeed, it formed a major part of the Roman gladiators’ diet and contemporary accounts of gladiator life sometimes refer to the warriors as hordearii – literally, “barley men”. Our very own hordearii are battling at the frontiers of science to ensure the Scotch whisky industry’s supply of barley is not only sustainable, but offers higher yield and quality. And to further establish Scotland’s leading position in the research of the world’s 4th most economically important cereal, the James Hutton Institute is currently promoting the development of a world barley centre in Dundee. Another great example comes from our breeding and research programmes on potatoes and soft fruit, known throughout the world. Around 50% of blackcurrants and around 15% of the raspberries grown worldwide are varieties bred at the James Hutton Institute, and our potato varieties account for approximately 5% of the UK seed potato production.
Such household names as the Glen series of raspberries, the Ben series of blackcurrants and the Loch Ness and Loch Tay blackberry varieties can also trace their origins to the James Hutton Institute in Dundee. The customer base of our commercial affiliates ranges from local companies such as Angus Soft Fruits and Taypack to multinationals including PepsiCo, LR Suntory and Greenvale AP. Underpinning the breeding programmes at the institute is a significant and wide-ranging research platform in plant genetics and diseases, with the aim of breeding varieties with resistance to pests and diseases and superior quality attributes. We have developed molecular techniques for increased efficiency of breeding which have had a major impact on the progress in the production of new varieties. So, next time you are about to enjoy a tasty punnet of raspberries, or a glass of whisky (or blackcurrant juice), or a bag of crisps, spare a thought for the Scottish scientists that are busy at work not just breeding the crop varieties we’ve come to love and enjoy the most, but also trying to solve a global challenge – how to create a safe, affordable, sustainable, economically sound and socially acceptable food future for everyone.

G
lobal oil and gas well drilling engineers Merlin ERD have shown they’re a wizard at what they do by lifting the title of Perthshire’s Business of the Year 2014.
The popular winner, based at Cherrybank, Perth, claimed the prestigious Perthshire Chamber of Commerce’s top business title at a glittering Star Awards ceremony in Crieff on Friday. Managing Director Iain Hutchison and delighted staff from the seven-year-old business celebrated after securing both the Business Growth and Exporting category trophies – and then going on to claim the overall trophy and title. Over 300 guests – including Scotland’s newly installed Deputy First Minister John Swinney MSP – heard how Merlin ERD captured the judges’ vote for its “excellence and expertise in every aspect of its business”.

Chamber President Mike McDiarmid said the leading Extended Reach Drilling company, which employs around 35 people, had demonstrated impressive increases in terms of turnover, market share and profitability. “The company is earning an enviable reputation across the globe for the impressive delivery of outstanding services and expertise,” he said. “It is an industry leader in its field and uniquely based in Perth – outwith the more recognised oil and gas sector hubs. “Merlin ERD impressed us for both its current operations and its future growth aspirations,” he added. “This company is the absolute embodiment of a Business Star. It is an outstanding company run by exceptional people and I’m sure it will continue to represent us well as one of the flagships for business in Perthshire.” Pictures by Graeme Hart. A thrilled Iain Hutchison said the overall title and individual category awards proved the “perfect” ending to what has been a “magical” year for Merlin, having attained a coveted Queen’s Award For Enterprise in the spring. “Our business is all about our people and this award belongs to everyone at Merlin,” he said. “The staff have worked so hard to bring the company to where it is today and I am immensely proud of everyone that made this Business Of The Year title possible.” Iain said that the award was particularly pleasing as it represented the endorsement of his business peers in Perthshire.

In a year when sport dominated the events calendar, five outstanding Perthshire sportsmen and women were awarded the first-ever Chamber “Sporting Achievement Awards” in a profile of the year’s events by Perthshire Advertiser sports editor Gordon Bannerman. These went to golfer Bradley Neil, curler Eve Muirhead, track athlete Eilidh Child, swimmer Stephen Milne and trainer and jockey duo Lucinda Russell and Peter Scudamore.

Combat The Troll In Your Workplace: Social Media Issues for Employers
Troll: an ugly, cave-dwelling creature depicted as either a giant or a dwarf Troll (internet): one who posts a deliberately provocative message on a social media forum with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument. The terms “troll”, “trolling” and “trolled” are being increasingly used in the media. More frequently these terms relate to the latter definition above (although the recent Hobbit trilogy has perhaps caused some confusion given its reference to the former). In any case, employers should be aware of the existence of any “trolls” within the workplace and, where appropriate, should be educating staff and taking action in relation to such issues.
How can employers combat these trolls? Employers should, as a minimum, take three steps to protect against such issues: •
Create clear guidelines: If not already in existence, employers should create a social media policy. This policy should address what use of social media is not permitted, at what times social media sites can be accessed by employees, whether commenting about the employer is permitted, whether such sites can be used for business development purposes and, if so, who is in charge. Employers should also ensure that staff handbooks include examples of social media-related misconduct within the definition of gross misconduct.
•
Take disciplinary action, where appropriate: Employers who discover any social media misuse which has an impact on the workplace should take appropriate action against the offending trolls. Employers who historically turn a blind eye to social media misconduct will be criticised by an employment tribunal for taking action in the future.
•
Be consistent: Employers should avoid a knee jerk reaction when responding to social media misconduct. Instead employers should treat each incident on a case by case basis however should take into account the following factors when deciding what disciplinary action (if any) is appropriate:whether the employer has a social media policy in place; the nature and seriousness of the alleged misuse; any previous warnings for similar misconduct; actual or potential damage caused to customer or client relationships.
Why should employers care about trolls in the workplace? Increasing use of social media by individuals has resulted in some high profile employment tribunal cases. An employer can be held vicariously liable for harassment or “trolling” which is caused by one of its employees. This means that any employee who has been subject to unwanted conduct within the course of employment by a “troll” colleague could raise a claim against his or her employer. This situation could arise even when the employer is unaware of the troll’s existence or online activity. Trolls can be deadly to their opponents. Internet trolls can be costly for their employer. If in doubt about internet trolls, employers should take legal advice. Every employment lawyer will confirm that it is far cheaper to take pre-emptive legal advice about such issues before disciplinary action rather than to resort to reactive legal advice after dismissal when faced with an employment tribunal claim. Unfortunately Blackadders is unable to give any useful advice about other type of trolls.

UNDERSTANDING SCOTTISH QUALIFICATIONS
A
t first sight, the Scottish qualification system might seem complex, but it is really very straightforward to understand. The fundamental aim is to provide a ‘learning ladder’ (or perhaps climbing frame would be more accurate, since you can go horizontally as well as up and down) that provides opportunities for everyone to achieve their full and true potential.
Further information about all where SQA Qualifications sit on the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework can be found at www.sqa.org.uk/scqf
The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) helps to make the relationships between qualifications clearer. It covers achievements such as those from school, college, university, and many work-based qualifications. Qualifications in the SCQF are compared using two measures: level and credit. The level of a qualification shows how difficult the learning is, and the amount of credit shows the size of the qualification.
PROMOTING PERTHSHIRE’S FOOD AND DRINK IS A RECIPE FOR SUCCESS

erthshire seized the world’s attention playing host to one of the biggest sporting events in the world last year. In this, the Year of Food and Drink 2015 we welcome yet another opportunity to showcase the region and its outstanding natural larder, and we intend to do just that. Rich in local produce from whisky casks aplenty to the region’s soft fruits, Perthshire is well placed to make the most of a year that celebrates and promotes Scotland’s exceptional natural produce. Did you know that visitors will pay up to 15% more for food of Scottish origin and businesses promoting Scottish produce typically enjoy up to 20% higher sales? VisitScotland’s latest Quality Assurance Scheme – Taste Our Best – has been designed to recognise and celebrate businesses that are providing and promoting quality Scottish food and drink. Helping to make your business stand apart, attract more customers, improve your bottom line, and reach over 2 million potential visitors through VisitScotland marketing exposure, it’s not hard to believe that already more than 11% of all Taste Our Best businesses are in Perthshire

TIME TO WEIGH UP THE IMPACT
F
ollowing on from our advice column in the last issue of InCommerce, employers now need to review their approach with employees whose weight may be causing them problems at work after a landmark ruling has tackled the issue head-on. Alan Matthew, employment law expert at Miller Hendry, offers businesses the following advice: “Employers now have a duty to take ‘reasonable’ steps to accommodate any obese employee, visitor or customer. That may mean a bigger desk, larger chair or offering a parking space close to the office. “This ruling doesn’t just apply to employers, it’s anywhere that’s open to the public, such as retail outlets and restaurants. However, it’s about a reasonable response, so it’s unlikely that a corner shop will be expected to make the same sort of investment as, say, a major high street retailer. “Employers need to be careful they don’t suggest that an overweight employee is solely to blame. This ruling places obesity in the same position as other forms of risk taking such as participating in sport. We don’t refuse special treatment to someone who is unable to walk following a horse riding accident, and the same applies to someone who cannot fully participate at work because of their weight. “As well as dealing with the potential problems surrounding obesity, all employers should make sure they encourage healthy lifestyles at work.” Provided by Alan Matthew, Partner and Employment Law expert at Miller Hendry Email: info@millerhendry.co.uk Tel: 01738 637311 Web: www.millerhendrysolicitors.co.uk
ACT NOW – IT’S THE LAW!
A
recent bulletin from The Pensions Regulator highlighted the challenges and dangers facing small and medium sized employers.
The Regulator has, for the first time, used its powers and served three firms with fixed penalties of £400 in respect of compliance failings. Furthermore, during its round of case reviews between July and September 2014, it issued 163 Compliance notices to employers to remedy one or more auto enrolment contraventions. That compares with just 14 issued for the period October 2012 – July 2014. Compliance notices aim to give employers a wake-up call that they need to provide the pensions their employees are due. Fixed penalties follow where employers fail to act upon these notices and escalating daily penalty notices is an additional power available to the regulator. The number of employers due to stage, increases significantly over the coming months. And The Pensions Regulator has said that they expect to see an increase in the number of times where they need to use their powers. This expectation is based on the assumption that these employers will leave their preparations to the last minute, that don’t know when they need to comply or indeed that they need to comply because they don’t know that law even applies to them! The regulator has made it clear that this type of non-compliance will not be tolerated. Auto Enrolment can represent a huge challenge for Employers. We would strongly endorse the regulator’s own recommendation to prepare early with the initial step being to find out when your staging date is. SCOTTISH SNOWDROP FESTIVAL
W
ander through Perthshire’s gardens and woodlands this winter to discover a wide range of stunning scenery and the blossoming of Scotland’s most delicate white flower, the snowdrop. In association with Scotland’s Gardens, the 2015 Scottish Snowdrop Festival will run until 15th March. With over 60 venues taking part, many of which are free to visit, you’re sure to experience brilliant moments full of winter beauty. Many of the gardens are opening especially for the festival, including both private collections and places which are usually closed in winter. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore areas in Perthshire taking part including the grounds of Scone Palace or visit Kilgraston School, near Bridge of Earn in Perthshire.
Towns and villages are also planning special events. For example, Coupar Angus hosts a weekend of snowdrop related events and fun for all the family with arts and crafts, drop-in workshops, an illustrated talk and Snowdrop Cycle ride to be started by John Swinney from Friday 27th February to Sunday 1st March. Some of the most breathtaking displays of snowdrops can be seen in stunning natural beauty spots, such as the Birks of Aberfeldy and the Black Spout Wood, both of which can be found in Perthshire. Immortalised in poem by Robert Burns, the Birks of Aberfeldy is home to a dramatic wooded gorge and spectacular waterfalls, while the woodland walk to the Black Spout Wood viewing platform is highly rewarding when you set eyes on the 60 m high cascading streams.
