elcome to the summer edition of our InCommerce magazine. This magazine has proved a valuable communication tool and benefits to all our members for eight years. Unfortunately, with print advertising proving so challenging to secure, publishers DTech have decided to sever their links with all Chambers - including us - in creating the InCommerce magazines. We will be contacting our members and partners to discuss our options going forward, but in the meantime, I am delighted to see such a large selection of members’ news articles. It really is great that our members are doing so well and have such exciting news to share with us. It’s also a pleasure to see and welcome our new members. This edition of InCommerce sees the launch of Business Star Awards 2016 supported by Binn Group. We are as excited about it as ever after last year’s record number of entries (an increase of 100%) and guests (increased by 35%) and we plan to grow it even further this year. With that in mind, there will be some changes to the format - while ensuring that a great time is still had by all as we showcase our valued sponsors and celebrated finalists and winners. As the event gets livelier each year we have extended the night and we will now host an “after party” which fires up at 1am – once the live band finishes – and you will be refuelled and refreshed before partying until 3am. A courtesy bus will run at 01.15 and again at 03.15 so we hope many of you will join us for this night of celebration and fun. And don't forget to seriously consider entering one of our categories. e are thrilled to be bringing back our food festival, Perthshire on a Plate, this year which will be running within Perth Show on Friday 5th and Saturday 6th August. We have a great line up of local and celebrity chefs over the weekend, pop up restaurants and producers all coming together to showcase the area’s high quality produce and culinary skills. The annual Agricultural showcase is a terrific platform and the food festival offers an exciting new dynamic for the Perth Show which also now boasts a Wine, Beer and Spirit Festival on the Friday evening and a Ceilidh on the Inch on the Saturday. Different offerings on both days mean you can attend both Friday and Saturday and enjoy two very different and varied experiences. You can read all about the festival on pages 27-29. Our Golf Day, supported by Carbon Financial Partners, at Strathmore on 26th August has, once again, sold out and we have everything crossed for the weather to be kind to us, on what is always a terrific day. Finally, I have been really enjoying meeting privately with many local businesses through the Business Mentoring Scotland programme and I have learned a lot about what our businesses need and what is available. This has identified several areas where there is no obvious existing business support and I am working to try to create additional services where possible, so thank you so much to those I have met with and I would encourage others to take part in Mentoring – either as a Mentor or a Mentee (or both) as it really is so worthwhile. BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

FOLLOW MY LEADER A look inside the Rural Perth & Kinross LEADER Programme

LEADER is a rural development programme which supports communities and enterprise under two main objectives; Promote a prosperous, inclusive and sustainable economy Create a safe and sustainable place for future generations. This is the first year for the Rural Perth and Kinross LEADER LAG (Local Action Group). The area has been awarded approximately £3.8million for projects. The previous Tayside LEADER programme allocated a total of £1.35million to Perth and Kinross during 2008-2013 and supported a total of 80 projects. Previously the fund was open only to communities but in this round small enterprises and social enterprises can apply for up to £30,000 with match funding for eligible projects. This new programme was launched in January 2016 and runs until December 2020 and is open to public, private and third

sector organisations. It is funded by the Scottish Government and the European Union with other contributions from local partners and organisations. Jackie Brierton (Chair Rural Perth and Kinross Local Action Group) said: “This funding award is a huge opportunity to put rural Perthshire on the map and to encourage creative community projects, assist more small businesses and social enterprises to achieve sustainability and job creation, and to leave a lasting legacy into the next decade. Even more importantly, we want to create better connectivity, strong networks and healthy collaborations across the private, public and third sectors – breaking down some of the artificial barriers which can exist between community-based activity and public and private sector organisations.”

What has already happened?

A Local Action Group (LAG) has developed the LEADER Business Plan and Local Development Strategy to address rural issues and develop opportunities. The LAG led an extensive engagement process and gathered feedback via surveys from a wide variety of individuals, community groups and social enterprises, via focus groups and events and Facebook and twitter. Lessons learned from the previous ‘Rural Tayside LEADER’ programme were also used to guide the LDS development. These documents can be found on the Rural Perth and Kinross website www.pkleader.org.

Who is on the LAG?

The LAG membership includes a majority of private and community organisations and public agencies. The full list in on the www.PKLeader.org website. The LAG make the funding decisions on the applications received at regular meetings. What can I apply for?

The priority areas • Community capacity building • Support to Enterprise • Community broadband • Youth initiatives • A Challenge Open Fund will also support other projects alongside the priority projects. Examples of projects and activities that received funding previously can be found on the www.pkleader.org. In this round they could include: • Support small and medium enterprises (including social and community enterprises) • Support supply chain and joint working initiatives • Skills development, particularly for young people • Develop community broadband networks and mobile access • Develop rural transport initiatives • Renovate empty or in need of improvement village/town centre properties • Develop or enhance access to landscape and natural environment • Promote and support community ownership of assets • Develop community based support and learning networks to share skills and resources • Support initiatives for young people • Develop or enhance access to landscape and natural environment through, for example, development of path or cycle networks • Enhance access to or develop local services including rural transport, facilities and community spaces • Promote and support community ownership of assets including business premises • Develop community based support and learning networks to share skills and resources • Develop community support services including access to specialised advice • Support joint working initiatives across sector or themes • Support initiatives for young people • Support recognition of community achievements and best practices

How do I apply?

The LEADER application process has two stages: Stage 1. Complete Expression of Interest (EoI) Form, following the link from www.pkleader.org. If your EOI is eligible you will be asked to arrange a meeting to discuss your project before progressing to Stage 2: and sent an invitation to complete the Application Form. Prior to this you must first check that you satisfy at least one of the objectives, are eligible and that you can obtain the relevant amount of match funding.

Entries are now being invited for 13 category awards and the search is on for the best in the business with the area’s most prestigious title – Perthshire Chamber of Commerce Business Of The Year 2016 – up for grabs. So businesses are being asked to “reach for the Stars” before entries close on Monday 19th September. Industry leaders, Chamber directors and sponsors from the business world will then help unearth the shiniest Stars in one of the country’s most robust judging procedures. Chamber Chief Executive Vicki Unite is looking forward to another outstanding event. “Every year we are extremely impressed by the standard of entry right across the board,” she said. “Perthshire has an abundance of outstanding businesses ranging from established internationally renowned organisations through to emerging one man operations.

STAR AWARDS

“As the definitive local business awards, Perthshire Business Star Awards continues to attract, showcase, applaud and reward those companies and individuals who are making a difference. “Over the years, the PCC Business Star trophies have become much-sought-after targets for companies to achieve,” she added, “and we have rolled out hundreds of examples of business excellence in the form of our winners.” The Chamber is delighted to welcome leading Scottish waste management company Binn Group on board as their main Star Awards event sponsor for the next three years. Glenfarg-based Binn Group’s commercial manager Jim Brown said the company was “honoured and delighted” to be associated with what he considered to be one of the best events of its type in the country. “The Star Awards is not just a great night out but one of the most robust and ultimately rewarding business competitions,” he said. “I have been a judge myself for these awards and was genuinely taken aback by the calibre of shortlisted entrants and pleasantly surprised by how thorough the judging process is. “The Star Awards is not just a paper exercise – it’s a very robust judging process and that showed me that to actually win a Star Award really means something. “The Awards ceremony itself is a fabulous night – full of fun, celebration, entertainment and enjoyment,” he added. “Binn Group management attend many dinners throughout the course of the business year but the Star Awards is one we genuinely look forward to.

“Binn Group wants to support that professionalism, success and enthusiasm going forward and we’re happy to sponsor a night which brings together so many elements of the local business community in an outstanding celebration of the wealth of business success in Perth and Kinross.” Chamber President-Elect Ross Graham said he hoped 2016 would again produce “a platform of outstanding performers” from Perthshire’s business community. “To be judged the best at what you do is a real accolade for businesses,” he said. “To take home a Chamber Business Star is a true sign of quality and excellence – something that abounds in the companies operating at all levels in this area. “Each year we see some truly remarkable contenders and I hope we can showcase some real Stars at this year’s awards dinner. “My own company was honoured to be a previous winner of the Business Of The Year title and the accolade carries a real punch in the business world. Anyone taking home a Chamber Star really has something to be proud of and a useful promotional tool for their business.” The awards will come to a glittering climax at a black tie dinner at Crieff Hydro on Friday, November 25. The spectacular event will be hosted this year by Star Awards favourite, journalist Maureen Young, and new stage partner, former President of Perthshire Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of Crieff Hydro, Stephen Leckie. Drinks on arrival will be followed by the awards ceremony and a fantastic three-course dinner. Look out too for some fundraising fun before dancing into the wee small hours to Groove Culture. Then heading on to a new fabulous after party until 3am where you will be re-fuelled and re-freshed. Courtesy buses will leave Crieff Hydro for Perth at both 01.15 and 03.15. CHAMBER SPONSORS

PARTNERSHIPS ENHANCE CHAMBER OFFERING

Platinum Partners

P

erthshire Chamber of Commerce is hugely grateful to the on-going support offered by their raft of committed Sponsor Partners.

The backing of key Platinum, Gold and Silver Partners has allowed the Chamber to function on a level otherwise unachievable. Their input guarantees an enhanced service for all our members in terms of the range of events, quality of service and dedicated support. PCC Chief Executive, Vicki Unite, explained the importance of these Partnerships and what they bring to the Chamber, as well as the benefits for those businesses signing up to a Partnership package. “The role of the Chamber is to support local businesses and the extent of that support would be severely restricted were it not for our generous Platinum, Gold and Silver Partners, working in addition to the support of our membership as a whole,” she said. “We introduced these tiered packages in response to the recession where we needed to make our sponsorship opportunities more accessible – particularly taking into account a huge percentage of Perthshire businesses are micro-businesses. “By creating these packages, which provide a core of common benefits – but have the ability to be fully tailored to the Partners’ requirements – we are able to offer a level of service that is closely aligned to the businesses’ marketing and promotional activities and overall objectives,” explained Vicki. “The support that we receive from our Partners also allows us to subsidise our costs and reduce fee increases while continuously growing our service offering and support for members.”

Gold Partners

Vicki explained that the benefits package was not all one way and stressed that Sponsor Partners could capitalise on both raised profiles and on-going publicity through their year-long relationship, increasing their standing in the local business community. “Our Sponsor Partners are all businesses that are well established in Perth and Kinross and want to support the rest of the business community in the area – especially our wealth of SMEs and business start-ups,” said Vicki. “They are putting something back into the local business sector and we are extremely grateful for their foresight and generosity,” she added. “Perthshire Chamber of Commerce punches well above its weight and that is due in no small measure to our Partners. The level and breadth of service we deliver would be much reduced without their backing.”

Silver Partners

Vicki is happy to discuss Sponsor Partner packages with both existing and potential supporters at any time. “It really is a partnership and all our Platinum, Gold and Silver partners deserve the grateful thanks of the Board, staff and membership of the Chamber.”

The process started with a thorough review of what the school’s core values are (Respect, Integrity, Kindness, Adventure, Humility, Optimism and Resilience). The school understands that these values define them as a community and that they should therefore be used to help establish their collective identity. With these values at the core, a site was built which delivers this message in a visual and interesting way. Sourcing sufficient high quality photographs to populate the site proved a sticking point until Judith Page, the school’s Head of Art, suggested giving each class in school a camera for a day. Luckily the day was sunny and some excellent, pupil perspective photos were captured! Jen Trueland, Headmaster’s PA and Head of Marketing and Admissions, said: “Our new website will hopefully demonstrate to prospective parents what a vibrant and caring community they will find when they visit. As the website says, our children’s future really does look bright from here”.

GLEBE HOUSE LAUNCHES NEW AFTERNOON TEA SERVICE Glebe House has become popular with guests for its high quality accommodation and in particular for the abundance of tasty home baked produce provided to guests for breakfast, tea and evening dinner. Its reviews have a common theme of stunning surroundings, great hospitality and wonderful food. As a development of this business, its owners Sara and Dave Wood decided to take advantage of the lovely surroundings and reputation to introduce a new and different afternoon tea service to non-resident guests. Full afternoon teas have become a very popular “eating out” choice this year and Glebe House has developed a particular menu that responds to that trend. It is now serving a full savoury and sweet selection of tea time treats, for private parties of between four and eight people. With both the stunning traditional dining room as a setting or, weather permitting, the pretty and sunny patio area, afternoon tea guests can celebrate and enjoy a private party in a different kind of environment. The Glebe House afternoon tea product reflects their high quality boutique brand in providing an attentive personal service to afternoon tea guests. As always with Glebe House the emphasis is on local provenance for their ingredients, home-baking and generous hospitality. This has worked well for their bed and breakfast and evening meal business and this development has opened up a different customer target market for the business.

the festival on behalf of Giraffe Trading, and says: “Perth and Kinross is rightly famed for its food and drink producers, so an event to celebrate this has a huge amount of talent to draw on locally. “When I first started talking about this idea with local producers, which is an adaptation of the Great Bath Feast, I wasn’t sure where it would go, but I’ve been absolutely overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of businesses to get involved. September’s looking like it’s going to be a really tasty month. “We are always looking for new ways to engage with local employers. The Great Perthshire Picnic has given us a reason to meet with and talk to a much broader range of potential employers than we would in our normal business and promote our jobseekers” Giraffe Trading is supported by the Community Food Fund in the first year of the event which will allow it to become established and sponsored in future years.

BINN GROUP ACQUIRE HOLDEN ENVIRONMENTAL’S PERTH OPERATIONS Binn Group, one of Scotland’s most progressive recycling and resource management companies, has bought over the business of long-established Perth firm Holden Environmental Ltd. Binn Group will continue trading from Holden’s Shore Road site where Holden’s have operated for over 70 years, developing the original scrap business into a skip hire, waste management and recycling company. A spokesperson for Holden Environmental’s Managing Director Robert Holden said: “After careful consideration it was determined that the long term success of the business was best secured by selling to the Binn Group who have undertaken to continue the first-class service that our loyal customers have come to expect over the years. Binn Group Chief Executive Allan MacGregor said the deal represented an exciting phase in the company’s growth plans and would meet their aspirations for a high-profile Perth satellite base. Assurances were given that all Holden employees would be absorbed into the Binn Group workforce, with operations continuing and developing at the Shore Road site. “Binn Group has a long term plan to expand into urban satellite sites in key locations throughout Scotland,” said Mr MacGregor. “Buying over Holden’s well-established business within Perth fulfills the first phase of that ambition. Established over 20 years ago by father and son John and Allan MacGregor as a land diversification project on their estate at Binn Farm, Glenfarg, Binn Group quickly became a leading name for all waste management needs for domestic and trade clients. Rapid growth has seen the company expand and evolve beyond the original landfill site provision and skip hire business to create Scotland’s largest and most diverse independent waste management operation, employing over 100 people.

A

ground-breaking partnership between global food and beverage management services employer Sodexo and the hospitality department at Perth College UHI, has resulted in a unique award-winning learning experience for hundreds of students. Four years ago, hospitality sector manager Ian Gibb identified an opportunity for the college catering facilities to be used as a training ground for his students. To date, this has inspired a partnership between education and industry that has resulted in an “in college” facility that not only offers high quality, low price food and drink to other college students, staff and visitors, but also provides the perfect training platform for hospitality students preparing for the world of work. Ian explained that the partnership project was partly driven by feedback from industry.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

The lessons learned through the hospitality partnership could translate into other areas of the hospitality industry sectors

of working in a real hospitality industry environment – but still within a supported educational environment”. And the results have been astounding. Not only are a higher percentage of students successfully completing their qualification and finding it easier to gain employment, but more and more new students are signing up to be part of this unique training programme. “Only 18 students took part in the early project,” said Ian. “This year there are more than 70 students enrolled on our training programmes.” Ian explained that students themselves have helped to grow and develop the curriculum with students now training at SVQ Levels 1 to 3 with each of the levels all working and training together in the kitchen and restaurant. The project has received wide recognition and a number of awards, in the wake of the successful partnership and this has turned both the education and industry spotlights on Perth College, with interest from others in the catering and hospitality sector.

“Employers told us they wanted students to be more industry ready, he said. On completing their courses, the students had acquired excellent skills but that they weren’t quite ready for work, they needed to be able to work under pressure and develop a faster rate of production. To achieve this level of readiness, the students needed to be exposed to real, industry kitchen/ restaurant experience as opposed to just classroom environment learning. “At Perth College we had a production kitchen, a guaranteed customer base, a global industry partner and the support and encouragement of our local employers,” said Ian. “The college curriculum in partnership with Sodexo is seeing students absorb the challenges. They are working under normal industry level pressures and are reaping the rewards

“We have many visitors looking at what has been achieved here,” said Ian, “and we are happy to support other organisations who recognise the benefits of partnership working”. Ian also suggested that the lessons learned through the hospitality partnership could translate into other areas of the hospitality industry sectors. David Ward, Executive Chef with Sodexo, works collaboratively with the College to develop the curriculum and ensure that it includes new and innovative developments within the industry. He believes the whole experience has proved “invaluable” for his organisation. “Working in this partnership sees us educating the workforce of the future in the best way possible,” he said. “The success of the partnership has exceeded everyone’s expectations and between us we are developing a formidable generation of young chefs and restaurant workers.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

Working in partnership with an industry giant such as Sodexo brings a raft of other benefits to the students, with many enjoying industry outings organised through the company’s vast contact base. They also benefit from scholarships and internships. “Our students are also the only ones in the UK eligible to take part in the renowned Salon Culinaire where they can compete against chefs in the industry,” explained Ian. Throughout a 12-hour service at the College’s Food Court, students working shifts plan, prepare, cook and serve between 400 and 500 meals a day, five days a week.

When students leave they already have those vital skills and experiences in place – building blocks that their new employer can work with and develop further. This is exactly what the industry is looking for “The realistic training environment at Perth College means that when students leave they already have those vital skills and experiences in place – building blocks that their new employer can work with and develop further. This is exactly what the industry is looking for.”

22

THE PERTHSHIRE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BUSINESS MAGAZINE • SUMMER 2016 www.perthshirechamber.co.uk

“We are not here to turn every student out to work in a Michelin starred kitchen,” said Ian, “but to be prepared for every environment be it a restaurant, café, care home, prison, hospital or school. The lessons they learn in the Food Court will prepare them for handling large quantities of food and meals as well as honing specialist chef skills for finer dining. “Many local restaurants looking for part-time employees visit us and most take one or two straight away after seeing them in action and chatting with them in situ – much more effective than an across-the-table interview.” Ian is justifiably proud of what the partnership has achieved in a few short years. “In my 30-plus years at Perth College this has been the most impressive advance in training within the hospitality department and the one which is having the most impact on the students and the industry,” he said. “We have to make sure we sustain what we do and guarantee the quality relating to the recruitment, training and assessment of students. It’s also important to grow the good practice we have already established and also retain the bespoke quality of individual training by ensuring each student is supported to exceed their potential.”

ello lovely, film friendly members of the Perthshire Chamber. I say this because my job would not be possible without the welcome that film and TV production receives here.

At this point you may be asking yourself “filming, I’ve never seen any here so what does she do for a job?”. Well taking the first bit of that, Perthshire is hugely attractive to production but it’s true you may never notice it as the region’s just so big in every way with lots of intriguing locations hidden from general view unless you happen to pass by on the exact days filming is going on. So to quote from the movies “show me the money”. 2015 saw a record level of economic impact across Perthshire, Fife and Tayside of almost £3 million. That equates to over 6% of production spend in Scotland (around £46 million) and Perthshire got about a third of that. If you are a fan of the TV drama series “Outlander” they have been using a whole variety of locations including castles and landscapes. As all the location owners are sworn to silence and we hope they might come back, forgive me if I say no more on that.

24

attract media production of all types. The core TayScreen service is to provide a free support service to productions to help them source locations, facilities, crew and other services. Projects let us know what they need and we do our best to help. Actually we also provide business and market development advice to companies and freelancers working in creative screen industries and other services looking to be ‘film-crew friendly’. That might be folks with businesses like accommodation, catering, transport, even posh loos. (It was an Angus company that did the honours on the latter for a certain Brad Pitt when “World War Z” was being filmed.)

So what exactly do I do to help attract production? In two words, Be Proactive.

We’re proactive in promoting and marketing the region, keeping a close eye on forthcoming production across advertising, film and TV. There really is nothing like ‘making it personal’ with each and every lead but we also make the most of direct and digital.

Now to the second bit. What do I do for a job?

TayScreen is also a member of various business networks that are really helpful like the Scottish Locations Network with Creative Scotland, Screen Facilities Scotland and the European Film Commission Network.

TayScreen is the screen commission for Fife and Tayside in Scotland. We started in 2002 and serve Perth & Kinross Council (and those of Angus, Dundee and Fife). The Council supports TayScreen and sees Film Tourism and Screen Tourism as an important part of Visitor Market Development.

And with our business advice hat on, we work with regional companies to encourage and support them in working with incoming production. The better the service here, the more this helps to attract production and grow the sector to benefit the region.

The office works together with the parts of the Council which work with the tourism and creative industries to promote the region to

It has to be said that Perthshire locations and businesses are very switched on as you would expect.

Generally there is at least one production in the region every week and over the year this adds up to about 80 to 100 film and TV productions TV productions. Also, increasingly there’s filming to get content for projects for different platforms such as games and virtual or augmented reality. So far I haven’t answered the “so-what” question. In other words why does any of this matter beyond the circus coming to town, doing their thing, spending some money and then moving on? Well, one important legacy of filming is screen tourism. Research by the likes of Visit Scotland and Visit Britain shows that up to half of the people visiting a place are inspired by what they have seen on screen. People love visiting locations used in movies and TV, whether being themselves or standing in for somewhere else, because they want to know “where was it filmed, really?” Whatever we might prefer to think, being on screen also lends credibility to a place and gets it on the radar. So this doesn’t just have an effect on tourism, it also makes a difference for business decisions and that lovely inward investment that we all want. Actually, we also work with Visit Scotland and the Perthshire Tourism Partnership and in April this year we held our second outing for Perthshire on Screen. The turnout was fantastic with location and business owners hearing from location managers David Taylor (Whisky Galore) and Duncan Broadfoot (Bond “Spectre” and now on the “The Mummy” with Tom Cruise). On screen tourism there was the lovely Jenni Steele from Visit Scotland and on what to expect from filming, there was the equally lovely Scott Robertson from Blair Castle. So where I come in is to add some specialist knowledge and information about the screen sector to the mix. The result is there’s a team effort going on and production is well received. But it really is more than that because what projects also get is that sprinkling of Perthshire magic – the people and the place. To show what’s filmed here, we have our own Movie Map – www.tayscreen.com/moviemap.cfm and also work with the Scottish Locations Network and Visit Scotland on promotion and movie maps to make sure that information is easily accessible and helps to attract visitors. “Outlander” alone has seen huge numbers of tourists. Last year, for example, followers in their hundreds headed for a convention in Crieff and travelled all over the region to see locations. Generally there is at least one production in the region every week and over the year this adds up to about 80 to 100 film and

Tasty food festival served up at Perth Show TV favourites cook up a storm for Perthshire audience

P

opular celebrity TV chef favourites Rosemary Shrager and Tony Singh will head an impressive line up of culinary talent as Perthshire Chamber of Commerce serves up another helping of its Perthshire On A Plate food festival. This summer the two-day spectacular is being staged as an integral part of the popular Perth Show at Perth’s Lesser South Inch on Friday and Saturday, August 5 and 6. The food and drink festival will feature celebrity and local chefs, demonstrations and tastings, book signings, food and drink related trade stands, fun-filled activities for “Kitchen Kids” and a large dining area and pop-up restaurants in a double celebration of food and farming.

And Perth Show secretary Neil Forbes described the new partnership as “the perfect fit”. “Perth Show is a key date in the local calendar,” he said, “with the rural and city populations coming together for a celebration of the agricultural industry and equestrian sector. “This year we are keen to broaden that appeal and bring in a cookery theatre and a food and drink marquee which would showcase the wealth and breadth of the area’s quality produce and culinary talent. The ideal solution to that ambition comes in the form of the tried and tested ‘Perthshire On A Plate’ festival.

Chamber Chief Executive and POAP organiser Vicki Unite said the annual Perth Show offered the ideal platform for the food festival to showcase produce and talent from Perthshire with retailers, producers and chefs coming together in an exciting two-day programme.

“This will bring a new and popular dimension to the visitor attraction.”

“Perthshire is really the top shelf of Scotland’s larder with an abundance of prime quality produce covering everything from game to soft fruit,” she said.

"I have always had a great fondness for Scotland and its people and I'm delighted to be taking part in Perthshire On A Plate – right in the heart of this wonderful country.

“Perthshire On A Plate will showcase that larder with the help of producers, suppliers, retailers and experts from across the county.

"It's a joy to be working with the finest Perthshire produce to create dishes which will hopefully delight and entertain the festival audiences.

“The food and drink sector has a natural crossover to our agricultural industry and we are hopeful that this inaugural partnership will become an annual feature.”

"I also look forward to meeting some of the local chefs who I know excel at what they do and also chat with the hard-working

producers from Perthshire and beyond who bring such fantastic ingredients and products to our table. "It will be wonderful to be part of not only this Perthshire On A Plate food festival, but also the wider Perthshire agricultural show which has been such a popular and long-standing highlight of the local farmers' calendar for over 150 years. "I'm even staying in a real castle (Knock Castle, Crieff)! I can't wait!" Scots favourite Tony Singh said he was also thrilled to be asked to be a part of the new Perth Show/Perthshire On A Plate partnership. “I am delighted to be part of this year’s event – flying the flag for fantastic Perthshire produce” he said. “I am passionate about enhancing fresh and local Scottish ingredients through the use of subtle spice and look forward to getting creative at the show!”

SHOWCASE CHEF DEMONSTRATIONS Heading the celebrity chef line-up are TV favourite Rosemary Shrager (Friday) and spice king Tony Singh (Saturday), backed by a host of talented local chefs including Graeme Pallister (63 Tay Street), Praveen Kumar (Tabla), Marek Michalak (Tabou) and Grant MacNicol (Fonab Castle). Perthshire master butcher Beaton Lindsay will be offering some tips and guidance in a fascinating butchery demonstration while fish and seafood experts George Campbell & Sons will dazzle show-goers with a demonstration on how to descale and fillet fish and work with shellfish. The Cookery Theatre, supported by Quality Meat Scotland, will also stage a fun cookery challenge between students from Perth College and the ladies of the SWI.

STOP AND EAT A range of pop-up restaurants featuring taster dishes from some of the area’s best loved eateries will allow visitors to buy and enjoy delicious local produce cooked to perfection as they relax in Perth Show’s new POAP dining area.

FOOD CHARTER – GUARANTEEING THE BEST Perth Show has also introduced a Food Charter supported by QMS to guarantee the quality and source of meat used at the event. Launched earlier this year by leading Chef Tom Kitchin, the Charter will mean that – where possible – suppliers to the public catering and hospitality units at the event will be required to serve only locally-produced food such as quality assured Scotch Beef PGI, Scotch Lamb PGI and Specially Selected Pork. Chef Kitchin, whose cooking philosophy is “From Nature to Plate”, has a passion for using the finest, freshest Scottish seasonal produce in his Michelin star restaurant The Kitchin, as well as Edinburgh gastro pub The Scran & Scallie. “My congratulations to all those involved in the Perth Show/ Perthshire on a Plate Food Charter initiative,” he said. “Scotland has a fabulous natural larder and it is a fantastic part of the country to showcase to the public all that farmers, and local food producers, have to be proud of. I’m sure this year’s joint event will be a huge success and play a valuable role in improving consumers’ understanding of the care and attention to detail involved in the production of quality ingredients like Scotch Beef and Lamb.”

LANDLORDS ON LOOK OUT FOR LEGAL CHANGES

T

he Private Housing (Tenancies) (Scotland) Act 2016 received Royal Assent on 22 April 2016. It introduces the most significant changes to the private landlord and tenant relationship in a generation. When the relevant provisions come into force the Act will introduce a new type of private residential tenancy. Landlords will no longer be able to enter short assured tenancies. One welcome change is the introduction of a Model Tenancy Agreement. One unwelcome change is that landlords will no longer be able to recover possession due to the term of the lease expiring. The “no fault ground” disappears. Instead landlords will have to rely on new grounds for repossession which are being introduced. Some are mandatory

and others discretionary. Confusingly a few have aspects of both. There will also be a restriction on landlords increasing the rent more than once every twelve months. More controversially, Scottish Ministers are to be given the power to cap levels of rent increases for sitting tenants in rent pressure zones. Local authorities can ask Scottish Ministers to introduce rent pressure zones for up to five years. The new Private Residential Tenancy is expected to commence around the end of 2017. Landlords who are concerned about the changes and how it may affect their business should seek professional advice. A RESIDENTIAL SNAPSHOT The introduction of Home Reports made surveyors a key part of the house selling process.

Q. Are Home Reports beneficial? A.

They are a legal requirement before a property comes to the market and the reports provide key information about the condition, value and energy performance to assist with purchase decisions. They have helped establish confidence in property values and a recent five-year review by the Scottish Government concluded that they have had a positive impact since their introduction.

Q. Why use a professional? A. Having a reliable and trusted Home Report acceptable

to all major lenders is beneficial when selling. A quick and accurate report also ensures there is no delay in bringing your property to the market. Graham + Sibbald have been established in Tayside for over half a century and have been based in Charlotte Street, Perth for 20 years. As Chartered Surveyors we offer a wide range of property services for all types of Commercial and Domestic properties and have a growing local and national presence with new offices in Kirkcaldy, Paisley and St Andrews. Provided by Greg Davidson, Partner, Grame + Sibald Email: Greg.Davidson@g-s.co.uk Tel: 01738 445 733 www.g-s.co.uk

Q. How healthy is the Perth residential market? A.

Transaction numbers in the £200,000-£400,000 range have increased by around 20% in 2016 (compared to 2015) indicating a healthy, stable growth pattern from the bottom up. Overall, we have witnessed a recovery which began slowly in 2013 and is now gaining momentum. Perthshire hosts an enviable range of stunning country properties and although sales of higher value properties have been more muted due to tax changes and political uncertainty, they continue to offer unrivalled amenity which is hard to resist attracting a wide range of buyers.

Tales of the Riverbank

T

34

he Tay and Earn Trust is a registered charity which aims to promote regeneration, education and research. The Trust in partnership with Tay Salmon Fisheries and Perth and Kinross Council established the Inner Tay Masterplan 2012-22 to provide a framework for sustainable development along the inner Tay. One of the primary aims of the Masterplan is to improve access to the Tay and encourage more visitors to the area. The common theme is reconnection – reconnecting Perthshire residents and visitors to the river; reconnecting Perth to Dundee and Fife; connecting with the core path network and connecting with new opportunities out with the area such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in Dundee.

Sport and Leisure – Willowgate Activity Centre and Fishery

Jim Findlay Head of Development for the Trust highlighted that it was important to be aspirational and listen to the views of local businesses and communities and develop a shared Vision for regenerating the inner Tay. There are over 30 projects in the Masterplan which are split into main themes.

One exciting and important success has been the Willowgate Activity Centre which is close to Perth City and adjacent to the river and Friarton Bridge. Phase one of the Centre was completed in January 2016 and has changing rooms, showers, classroom, meeting room, and a teaching pond. A range of activities are provided for visitors including coble boat trips on

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT the Tay, guided Kayak trips with Outdoor Explore, canoeing and stand up paddle boarding. Beginners and experienced visitors are all welcome so why not come along and take part in the activities on offer. The Activity Centre also provides an important hub for smaller local businesses who can use the Centre as a base and utilise the classroom and meeting room for training or other events. Work on Phase 2 will include the establishment of 10 equipment storage containers which will be available for hire. Another important development is the Willowgate Fishery situated on the banks of the Tay, 2 miles from Perth City Centre. The fishery comprises of a 9-acre fly only trout loch and 4 miles of Salmon fishing on the River Tay. The loch is regularly stocked with grade one, fully finned, hard fighting Rainbow Trout with a minimum size of 2lb. Novices and experienced anglers alike are welcome and tackle hire and tuition is available. There is also an abundance of flora & fauna to be seen at the fishery, from the Osprey and Otter giving fishing lessons, the deer grazing along the banks to the wild orchids growing on the water’s edge.

Improving Infrastructure – Willowgate Riverside Café and Pontoons

The establishment of the Willowgate café adjacent to the Tay and next to the fishery provides a welcome stop off for visitors. The café was previously a fishing bothy and is currently being refurbished and will re-open in the spring of next year. When the café was open prior to the refurbishment work it was very busy and visitors fondly referred to it as having a warm, friendly relaxed atmosphere – like an alpine ski chalet with the open log fire and wooden décor.

The Willowgate Activity Centre, Café and Fishery, footpaths and the pontoons will all help to regenerate the Tay and encourage more visitors to the area

35

THE PERTHSHIRE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BUSINESS MAGAZINE • SUMMER 2016 www.perthshirechamber.co.uk

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT Pontoons will also be constructed at Fergusson Gallery Perth and Willowgate for small boats and kayaks to access the river. The work should be completed by the end of the year and the pontoons will be operational in early 2017. A pontoon at Elcho Castle may also be developed if funding can be secured and a Park and Choose will be located at West Kinfauns.

Biodiversity Interpretation and Access – Footpaths

The creation of riverside footpaths is also vital in helping to improve access to the river Tay. One of the aspirations is to create a memorable journey for visitors. The aim would be to walk along the riverside footpath from Rodney Pavilion in Perth to the Willowgate Café and have a coffee or lunch. Visitors could then get on a boat and travel down river to Elcho Castle and spend some time learning about the history of the castle. They could then get on a bike or walk back to Perth along the river or alternatively get a boat back. An outdoor classroom is also being established at Willowgate for use by schools and other groups for environmental studies such as the life cycle of the salmon, pond dipping, wildflowers, bee keeping and willow weaving classes. A great deal of progress has been made on implementing projects within the Masterplan. The Willowgate Activity Centre, Café and Fishery, footpaths and the pontoons will all help to regenerate the Tay and encourage more visitors to the area. Future projects may include the refurbishment of riverside bothies to enable visitors to stay overnight, narrow boats providing visitor accommodation, a riverside footpath from Elcho Castle to Perth and a bio-fuels project using Tay reed beds. The support of the Coastal Communities Fund, SSE, Perth and Kinross Council, Tay Salmon Fisheries and the Post Code Lotteries is greatly appreciated. For more information on the work of the Tay and Earn Trust and the Masterplan or to book any of the activities or volunteer please contact the Trust web site at www.tayandearntrust.org or call 07831820523.

THREE QUICK TIPS FOR HANDLING THE WORKPLACE FACEBOOK FELON

D

o you employ a Facebook felon? A Facebook felon is the employee who posts abusive messages to fellow employees, or other people, often during working hours.

Here are three quick tips to help employers stay on top of social media activity in the workplace.

1. Be aware

Employers should be aware that they can be held responsible, and liable, for the actions of their employees on social media. Employers should not assume that if employees post outwith working hours, they cannot be held responsible for them. Employers should have a social media policy in place with clear examples of what amounts to misconduct on social media and they should provide staff with training on the issue. This can restrict the employer’s liability of any misconduct.

3. Be fair

“Banter” is not an acceptable defence for making offensive posts, however, previous comments made by the victim should also be taken into account. If it is clear that both parties have been engaging in similar conversation, it is important to treat them both consistently. It can often be difficult to decide whether one comment is worse than another. Provided by Andrew Wallace, Solicitor – Employment Law, Blackadders Email: andrew.wallace@blackadders.co.uk Tel: 01382 229222 www.blackadders.co.uk/

2. Beware

Employers should beware of any unwanted social media activity. The law recognises harassment as being unwanted conduct which creates an environment that is intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive to the victim. If an employee’s social media postings have the effect of creating this environment, the employee - and potentially the employer - could be liable for harassment.

uperfast, Fibre and High Speed are all names used for the next generation of broadband, also sometimes referred to as “faster broadband” or “next generation broadband”. It differs from basic broadband in that it is much faster in terms of the data it can transfer. Commercial providers’ projections showed that by the end of 2017, they planned to have rolled out the technology to 66% of Scottish premises. This meant that 34% of Scottish premises would still be unable to access and benefit from this new technology. £410 million is being invested in the DSSB programme by the Scottish Government and its partners: Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), BT, the UK Government through Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK), local authorities and the European Regional Development Fund, to

install the infrastructure required to bring faster speeds in the areas which weren’t going to be covered by the commercial roll-out. It’s a really complex and challenging engineering project. In fact, it’s the most ambitious fibre infrastructure project yet undertaken in Europe. Work is currently running ahead of schedule with 85% of homes and businesses in Scotland able to access fibre broadband in June 2015, six months ahead of the original target date. By the end of 2017, it’s anticipated that around 95% of premises in Scotland will be able to connect to a fibre broadband infrastructure. The Scottish Government is committed to pushing superfast broadband coverage even further and is currently developing a procurement and delivery strategy aimed at achieving 100% coverage and expects to start procurement activity by the end of this year. Maureen is well known to many through her work with the Perthshire Advertiser and Radio Tay, as well as her PR role with several high profile local clients including Binn Group and Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance and her wideranging charity involvement. In this 2-3 hour teach-in, Maureen will teach people how to identify PR material within their company or organisation, make it interesting for the media and the consumer and how to work with the media to attract maximum publicity for products and/or services. Using examples from her own wealth of experience, fun interactive role play and some enjoyable exercises, Maureen will develop people’s ability to identify, research, prepare and outsource material that will get businesses noticed. She will show how this can be used to bring companies to the attention of a much wider local, national or even international audience using all media platforms. “People can sometimes have a good story to tell but are unaware of its potential and unsure how to bring it to the attention of the media,” explained Maureen. “This training session will help them fulfil simple PR requirements themselves and build their confidence for the future.” This one-off class is aimed at SMEs who do not employ their own PR staff or individuals new to the role. It will be held at Saltire House, Perth, on Tuesday, October 25, 5.30pm-8pm. Cost – £110 for Chamber members, otherwise £140.

EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT?

T

he recent Sports Direct case highlighted a shift towards seeing employees as disposable objects. Is your organisation like Sports Direct, reminiscent of the Victorian industrial era where employees are easily replaced? Or do you value your employees as individuals and need them to be engaged? Employee engagement results in staff who work harder, think more creatively and care more because they feel fully involved in the enterprise The simplest definition of employee engagement is: the business values the employee and the employee values the business’

Motivation • • •

Advocacy •

How much would your staff agree with these statements?

‘I would recommend my organisation as a place to work or be a customer’

Involvement • •

As many jobs become automated, with machines replacing people, the remaining jobs often require the skills that people have and machines don’t (yet!). These organisations want staff that think for themselves and care about the business. That’s why Employee Engagement has been a buzz word recently.

‘I look forward to going to work’, ‘I am enthusiastic about my job’, ‘Time passes quickly’

‘I am able to make suggestions to improve the work of my team’, ‘There are frequent opportunities for me to show initiative’, ‘I am able to make improvements happen’

Rowan’s “Management Today” course runs in partnership with the Chamber in Perth on 29th November. BUSINESS RATES REVALUATION 2017

B

usiness Rates are currently in the spotlight within Perth City Centre and there are a number of issues that have led to them being so out of kilter with market rents. The Scottish Government’s decision in 2012 to delay the 2015 Revaluation was at a time when businesses were experiencing the worst recession in over half a century and has led to the current imbalance between market rents and rateable values. The situation was further compounded by the unfortunate timing of the tone date for the last Revaluation (1 April 2008) falling prior to the UK financial crisis of October 2008 and the subsequent decline not being clear to see at that stage. The 2017 Revaluation (due 1 April 2017) will have a varying degree of impact on local businesses.

Grade A offices in Perth are also likely to see a fall in rateable values with rents falling, in some cases, by as much as 30% between the period of Revaluations. Rents for secondary offices have remained fairly consistent as have industrial properties and are unlikely to see the same significant falls in Rateable Value. If you would like some early advice on the likely impact of the 2017 Rates Revaluation please contact Graeme Duncan, Bidwells, tel: 01738 630666. Graeme Duncan, Partner, Head of Commercial Team, Bidwells, Email: Graeme.Duncan@bidwells.co.uk Tel: 01738 630666 www.bidwells.co.uk

Retail ventures will likely see the largest falls in rateable values as evidenced by a large number of market deals being concluded throughout Perth City Centre (High Street, St John Street, Scott Street, King Edward Street and South Street) at rents significantly below the record deals that were taken into consideration at the last Revaluation. Many tertiary streets are likely to remain fairly consistent. Graeme Duncan, Bidwells

Auto Enrolment Adviser Starting from October 2012 every business across the UK has been required to enrol their employees into a Qualifying Workplace Pension Scheme.

THE AUTO ENROLMENT ADVISER The Coach House Rennies Loan Kippen FK8 3DX Email: graham@theautoenrolmentadvisor. co.uk Contact: Graham Robinson

This is the first time that employers have been required by law to contribute into their employees’ pension scheme. Employees must also contribute and this will be aided by government contributions through tax relief. Auto enrolment is seen as the solution for the current pension inertia, the government are seeking to change the default setting for pensions from not saving to saving. Only large companies were affected at first. However, this has now changed and it is the turn of

small and micro enterprises. As we progress the numbers of schemes registered will sharply rise from 10,000 schemes per month in August 2015, before peaking in August 2017 with over 120,000 schemes to be set up that month. The Auto Enrolment Advisor, founded by Graham Robinson, draws on 34 years in the financial services industry, to help guide company owners and directors through the process.

Lifting the burden and worries of auto enrolment from our clients allows them to focus on what they do best, running their business. We see great value in being part of the Chamber as we share a common belief that business prosper when working together.

If you are an employer, you will need a partner in helping to meet your Auto Enrolment requirements. It is our goal at The Auto Enrolment Advisor to ensure stress free compliance for all our clients.
