ADVERT ADVERT ADVERT Yearbook 2010
Friendship is like whisky, the older the better
Nestling by the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond our family-owned Scotch whisky distillery takes its name and its exquisitely pure water from this most picturesque and celebrated of all Scotlandʼs lochs. The beauty and tranquility of the setting belies the considerable activity within one of the finest Scotch Whisky Distilleries. Uniquely designed stills enable us to produce a total of eight different fine single malt Scotch Whiskies. In addition, our new “state of the art” grain stills, the most modern in the land, arguably produce the very best single grain whisky in Scotland. At Loch Lomond dedicated experts have been nurturing distinctive drams for generations. The ever-mindful attention of our managers ensures that only the choicest ingredients are selected, then allowed to mature undisturbed within the finest oak barrels, crafted within the distillery by our very own coopers.

Welcome Title Welcome to Portavadie Marina In the 1970s, the British Government commandeered remote and peaceful Portavadie as a suitable green field site for the construction of oil rigs, then having put all facilities in place, failed to secure any orders. The legacy was a deep and sheltered lagoon which lay almost dormant for over 30 years until the present owners realised it would be the ideal setting for a marina and leisure centre with self-catering accommodation. Situated on Loch Fyne, Portavadie is the perfect gateway to some of the best sailing waters in the west of Scotland, offering both challenging passages and sheltered waters for all levels of ability and inclination. Islands, harbours, safe anchorages and good shore-side facilities are within easy reach for those who wish to stay within greater Clyde waters, while the entrance to the Crinan Canal at nearby Ardrishaig opens up the west coast and islands beyond. The whole marina complex has been built to a very high standard, with quality pontoons, wide walkways and full services at every berth. In April 2009 our new shore-side offices, restaurant and bar opened, offering visitors an equally high standard of shower and laundry facilities, plus an excellent restaurant and a bar which has already won a ‘Best Nautical Bar’ award! On site are 6 well-equipped cottages which have been very popular over the last few years, and during 2010 the first phase of our luxury self-catering apartments overlooking the marina will be completed. Other developments in the pipeline include a chandlery and a shop. Our visitors this year have been very appreciative of our service and facilities. They have also been very supportive and understanding during the construction period and for that we would like to say a big ‘thank you’. We look forward to welcoming customers old and new to Portavadie Marina in 2010.

Marina Facilities The Marina
Shore facilities
Portavadie Marina has been built to a very high standard, with the whole pontoon network moored by a sophisticated system called Seaflex, which means there are no piles to obstruct walkways, or grunt and groan as the tide rises and falls. Seaflex has been used in other prestige marinas around the world, including Hong Kong and the Palm Tree Marina in Dubai, so we are in good company!
In addition to top quality shower facilities with underfloor heating, we have a family bathroom complete with television which can be hired for a small additional cost. There is also a drying room for wet gear and a wellequipped laundry which – like showers and toilets – is available 24 hours to visitors.
To ensure the marina was fully protected from the sea, the breakwater was completely rebuilt over an eight-month period this year, and to complement this, six sixteen tonne wave attenuating pontoons are moored inside the entrance.
Berths We have 230 fully-serviced year-round berths with 240v power, water, lighting and wifi internet connection and a fuel berth for marine diesel and petrol. Visitor berths are always available and we can offer both long and short-term booking arrangements.
There is ample car parking space and plenty of trolleys. We have facilities for private dining, meetings, weddings, birthdays and other special events in our magnificent new building overlooking the Marina. On the upper levels there are wonderful views of Arran and across Loch Fyne to Tarbert. For more information, please look at the section on Restaurant and Bar. Self-catering accommodation is available at Portavadie Marina and cottages can be booked in conjunction with visitor berths at a favourable rate. Please enquire at the marina office for details. We have 5 cottages with 2 bedrooms, each sleeping 4-5 people, and one cottage in a slightly more remote location which has one double bedroom. Work is now well underway on the first phase of development of luxury apartments adjacent to the Marina building and these should be complete and ready for use during 2010.
6
Chandlery and Shop Our new chandlery and shop is scheduled to open in the spring or early summer 2010. In line with the ethos at Portavadie the chandlery will stock quality brands of sailing clothes, wet weather gear and fittings. To name but a few, our lines of clothing and footwear will be from Musto, Gill and Joules. Our chandlery will also be the base for a shop providing basic provisions, fresh produce and gifts.

Waterways The Caledonian Canal The 96.5km Caledonian Canal is truly the ‘International Gateway’ to cruising in Scotland. Stretching from Inverness to Fort William it is without doubt one of the great waterways of the world, offering visitors afloat and ashore spectacular scenery and amazing wildlife not to mention famous Scottish hospitality. The Caledonian Canal operates on a seasonal basis: 7 days per week in Spring, Summer and Autumn, and Monday to Friday during Winter.
The Crinan Canal The Crinan Canal meanders from Ardrishaig on Loch Fyne to Crinan through truly magnificent scenery, rich in history, with many world class heritage sites, a designated wildlife reserve and miles of forest walks and cycle ways. So step back in time, relax, slow down and stretch those sea legs ashore. Although only 14.5km in length the canal offers an opportunity to avoid an often difficult sail around the Mull of Kintyre and cuts around 160km off your journey. The Crinan Canal operates on a seasonal basis: 7 days per week in peak season, Monday to Saturday during Spring and Autumn and Monday to Friday during Winter. Please check with the local Canal Office or www.scottishcanals.co.uk for exact operating dates and times.

Facilities the marina basin. Freshly baked inhouse each morning cakes, scones and snacks are available all day with selections of teas, coffees and other refreshments. Our lunch and dinner menus reflect the seasons and also the wonderful quality and variety of local produce. As many of our ingredients as possible are sourced from local producers and suppliers, including wonderfully fresh seafood and shellfish from Tarbert, game from local dealer Winston Churchill and top quality beef and lamb from Buccleuch Estates. Every day, our chefs offer ‘specials’ at lunch and dinner to supplement the seasonal menus. Children are catered for with small portions of ‘grown up’ dishes rather than their own menu of processed foods, and all special dietary requirements can be met.
Portavadie Marina Bar and Restaurant Since opening in May 2009, our all day bar and restaurant has been a great success, winning accolades from our visitors and also from the press and licensed trade (see below). Situated in our stunning new building, the restaurant is open every day from early till late during the summer months, with slightly reduced opening hours in the winter. Breakfasts are served until 11.30am, wafting tantalising aromas of coffee and bacon across
Our website lists the current menus, but our chefs are also pleased to prepare your own favourite dishes, given a little notice.
residents too – love to experience the ambience of the restaurant along with the delicious food from our kitchens. The restaurant is on two levels, both affording great views of the marina and beyond. There is also decking for al fresco dining, a barbecue area and a small marquee for overspill or special parties. With prior notice, yacht club musters, private dining groups can be catered for and we are also happy to accommodate corporate functions and larger celebrations such as weddings. Our Bar, which is part of the restaurant area, stocks a comprehensive array of beers, wines and spirits, not to mention our Classic Cocktail list. In 2009 we won the Benromach Nautical Restaurant and Bar of the Year award at the Scottish Licensed Trade Awards, which was a great boost to our new venture.
The success of our restaurant means that advance booking really is essential, even midweek during the summer, as we hate to disappoint. We do offer ‘take away’ freshly cooked fish ‘n chips for those who either can’t get a booking or who would prefer to eat on board their own boats but most of our visitors – and many local 19
Self Catering Cottages and Luxury Apartments Our luxury apartments planned for completion in 2010 will be situated overlooking the marina with views out to Loch Fyne. Each apartment will have open plan living areas and each bedroom will have en-suite facilities. There will also be saunas in every apartment and most will also have drying rooms. Unfortunately pets will not be able to stay in the apartments.
Overlooking the marina and out towards Loch Fyne we have five comfortable self catering cottages. Each cottage can sleep 4/5 persons in 2 bedrooms. There is a family bathroom and the master bedroom has its own shower and toilet en-suite. The living area comprises an open plan living room complete with leather sofas, free view TV and DVD unit. The kitchen is well equipped with cooker/oven microwave, fridge/freezer and dishwasher. The electric heating system is very efficient and all electricity, linen and towels are included in the rental price. High chairs and cots are available and pets are welcome. Outdoor tables and chairs are provided for those wishing to maximise their time in the wonderful Argyll fresh air. Tighnamara – is a single bedroom cottage in a field on the other side of rocky outcrop from the marina. It is possible to take a car to the front door and it has a wonderful view over Portavadie Bay. The cottage which is beautifully appointed is built of cedar and glass and is topped off with a sedum roof. As well as an underfloor electric heating system, there is a log burning stove and a luxurious bathroom complete with double bath. Decking and large patio doors allow for easy access to the outdoor sitting area.

Out and About Portavadie Portavadie is situated on the eastern shore of Loch Fyne opposite the popular fishing village of Tarbert. The Cowal Peninsula, as this area is known, has a wonderfully remote, rural appeal yet boasts a great variety of leisure facilities. Only 2 hours drive from Glasgow, the final 10 mile section along the western Kyle of Bute is described in a recent article in ‘The Scotsman’ as ‘the best scenic drive in Scotland’. The Kyles of Bute is a narrow stretch of water between the island of Bute and the mainland villages of Colintraive, Tighnabruaich and Kames, providing both scenic sailing and car or cycle touring. Kames and Tighnabruaich have good hotels and cafes, shops for essential items, an art gallery, bank, garage, doctor’s surgery, sailing school and scenic 9-hole golf course. Colintraive has a hotel with good food and small shop. Across Loch Fyne is Tarbert, which can be reached by a regular Calmac ferry from Portavadie. Tarbert has hotels, bars, tearooms, shops and other facilities, and is the gateway to the Mull of Kintyre and nearby islands of Gigha, Islay and Jura. Continuing along the eastern shore of Loch Fyne from Portavadie Marina, the Oyster Catcher pub restaurant on the beach at Otter Ferry is a short drive or a pleasant sail – taking care to avoid the Otter Spit! Moorings and a landing pontoon are available here. For a longer day’s excursion, travel round the head of Loch Fyne to 22
Inveraray, a fine example of a Scottish 18th century new town, with traditional shops, pubs, woollen mills, restaurants and many visitor attractions including the Jail and the Castle, seat of the Duke of Argyll who is head of Clan Campbell. A stop en route at the famous original Loch Fyne Oyster Bar is a must. Back in the Kyles, the Island of Bute can be reached by water or by road, taking the short ferry crossing from Colintraive. Apart from its gentle pastoral landscape and fine beaches, Bute’s principal attraction is Mount Stuart, Britain’s most astounding Victorian gothic mansion, home of the Marquess of Bute. A full day can easily be spent here, enjoying the house, gardens and fine parkland. Other attractions on Bute include the 800 year old ruin of Rothesay Castle and the many remnants of the town’s huge popularity as a seaside destination in Victorian times (including the best example of Victorian public toilets to be found anywhere!). Walkers can tackle part or all of the 30-mile ‘West Island Way’ and enjoy great views to the Isle of Arran. Arran, known as ‘Scotland in miniature’, can also be visited from Portavadie. Calmac operates a limited service between Tarbert and Lochranza year round, giving access to Arran’s spectacular mountains, glens and attractive villages.
Water-based activities Sailing is the main activity in this area, and Portavadie Marina offers not only safe comfortable berthing for yachts and motor cruisers but also selflaunching facilities for day boats. Tighnabruaich has a long-established Sailing School which provides dinghy sailing and windsurfing tuition for all ages and levels of experience in the sheltered coastal waters of the Kyles. This coast is ideal also for exploration by canoe or rowing boat, or for divers who appreciate the clarity of the water which is rich in marine life. Dive boats can be chartered locally, as can boats for wildlife-watching and sea fishing. In addition to sea fishing, fresh water fishing is available on the three lochs in the area and permits are available locally.
Land-based activities Portavadie Marina is situated at the start of the Cowal Way, a 57-mile walking route along the length of the peninsula which ends at Inveruglas on Loch Lomond. It includes both gentle and rugged terrain, with easy sections which make a pleasant ramble from the Marina. The Kintyre Way provides another long-distance path for keen walkers, stretching as it does from Tarbert to Southend – a route total of 87 miles – again with a mixture of serious hiking and gentle meanderings.
Title Horse-riding is available at nearby Ardlamont and golfers are welcome at the Kyles of Bute Golf Course, just a short drive from Portavadie Marina. In addition to the challenge of the hilly, moorland 9-hole course, they can enjoy spectacular views and possibly a variety of wildlife! The tracks and forests around the Marina not only provide good walking but are also ideal for cycling and it is planned to offer bicycles for hire from the Marina in 2010.
Festivals and Events Visitors can be spoiled for choice from Easter to October with events ranging from Highland Games to Seafood Festivals. Portavadie Marina staff will have information available on all seasonal activities. The following are a few of the most popular:-
Tarbert Brewin Dolphin Scottish Series is one of Scotland’s most spectacular yachting events and takes place from Tarbert in May each year. Visitor berths are available at Portavadie Marina which is a short sail from the start lines.
Bute The Isle of Bute Jazz Festival has been staged on the first weekend of May each year for over 20 years. Rothesay in particular comes alive with bands and performers from many parts of the world playing throughout the day and evening in venues from bars to cruise boats. Bute Highland Games take place in August each year in Rothesay.
Throughout Cowal CowalFest – a walking and arts festival which takes place for 2 weeks every October but also includes an ongoing programme of monthly talks.
Dunoon The Cowal Highland Gathering –the largest Highland gathering in the world – takes place during the last weekend of August each year. Over 3500 competitors come from all around the world to take part in these Games, including 150 pipe bands.
Tarbert Seafood Festival is held on the first full weekend in July each year. Live bands, cookery demonstrations, wonderful seafood stalls, parades and children’s entertainment entice many visitors. Tarbert Music Festival, a celebration of folk and other traditional music, is usually held in the middle of September each year. 23
