Loch Fyne Loch Fyne
Portavadie
True Highland landscape awaits you across the seasons, a Scotland as you always imagined exists and is alive and well located in the heart of Argyll nestled on the eastern shores of Loch Fyne. Wildlife, community and the occasional whisper of gossip over a nip at the end of the day await. The shoreline is home to Inveraray and Tarbert, take the ferry or a scenic drive and indulge yourself time and again in the rugged beauty of Argyll’s Secret Coast.
A small settlement on the eastern shore of Loch Fyne. A ferry terminal connects Portavadie to Tarbert on the Kintyre peninsula. The derelict village of Polphail lies nearby, built to accommodate workers at a planned oil platform construction yard. The yard was never completed and the village was never occupied.
Kilfinan On the eastern side of Loch Fyne set in the beautiful Cowal Peninsula is the village of Kilfinan. In addition to the stunning scenery, Kilfinan also offers many places of historical interest with the small church dating back to the 13th century that guards the well preserved Kilfinan stones that date back to the 9th century within its vault. With activities such as bird watching, walking, cycling, shooting and fishing all available close by it is the perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
Millhouse
12
Lying east of Loch Ascog, Millhouse was the home to the Millhouse Gunpowder Mill. Situated in a field to the north of the crossroads at Millhouse a powder tester cannon still remains which was used to test the power of the powder and whether or not it was acceptable. A test projectile remains rusted in place within the barrel. The timekeeping bell was kept at the time in the manager’s cottage and was known as the Dolphin Bell; this was restored and re-erected at the entrance to the cemetery in Millhouse along with the cannon in 2006 as a memorial to the workers killed in explosions which took place at the Mill. In 2007 residents of Millhouse buried a time capsule into a small cairn next to the memorial where it is to remain sealed until 2107.
Kames Kames, a small village connected to Tighnabruaich, has a post office, church and village hall that often hosts coffee mornings, dances and shows from the local clubs. Duncan’s Village Store, winner of the Scottish Food and Drink Neighbourhood Store of the year 2010, provides a great range of grocery products, wines and spirits, newspapers and more. Set in the hills above the village the 9-hole golf course offers stunning views across the water to Bute.
Tighnabruaich Tighnabruaich is popular for sailing and yachting, situated on the west side of the West Kyle and stretching into the beautiful Kyles of Bute. Home to Kyles Athletic, one of Scotland’s most successful shinty clubs, many gather to watch their weekly games during the season at the shinty pitch that also has a play park and tennis court. The Tighnabruaich pier is visited twice a week during the summer by the Waverley paddle steamer, the last sea going paddle steamer in the world. The village itself has a gift shop, art gallery, post office, Spar shop and a coffee shop.
Title Glendaruel
Otter Ferry
The main village in Glendaruel is the Clachan of Glendaruel, the current location of Kilmodan Primary School and Kilmodan Church that was built in 1610. Glendaruel has inspired many bagpipe tunes, The Glendaruel Highlanders and The Sweet Maid of Glendaruel. Surrounded by beautiful scenery, Glendaruel has the perfect peaceful and tranquil atmosphere to relax and unwind and enjoy the natural beauty.
The name is not believed to be connected in any way to otters but is said to have been derived from the Gaelic word oitir (spit land or sandbank). Laying on the eastern side of Loch Fyne a ferry once operated that connected to the western side of the loch, West Otter Ferry, ceasing only in 1948. The mile and a half crossing was a welcome alternative to the long trek around the loch. West Otter Ferry is located at the end of an unmade shore track along the loch and the remains of the dry stone quay and slipway still remain, along with the remains of the ferry workers cottage. Fantastic views are found across the landscape and right at the centre is The Oystercatcher pub and restaurant.
Ardlamont Point Ardlamont point separates Loch Fyne and the Kyles of Bute with fantastic views of the Isle of Arran and the Kintyre peninsula. Nearby you can find a cup and ring marked rock, a form of prehistoric art.
Dunans Castle Located in Glendaruel, the historic structure of Dunans Castle can be seen on maps dating back to 1590 and the building was the home of the Fletcher Clan from 1745 to 1997 where it then went on to be run as a hotel. Unfortunately it was during this time, 14th of January 2001, that the castle was left a ruin by a fire. The site is now under new ownership and going through an extensive restoration program.

By Water The Marina Having just completed our third year of operation, many people have experienced what a wonderful sheltered and equipped marina we have and what fantastic shore facilities we provide. However for sailors and visitors still to sample the Portavadie experience, we are situated on Loch Fyne and our marina offers the perfect gateway to some of best sailing waters in the west of Scotland, providing both challenging passages and sheltered waters for all levels of ability and inclination. Islands, harbours, safe anchorages and good shore-side facilities are within easy reach for those who wish to stay within the areas of the Clyde and Kyles of Bute, while the entrance to The Crinan Canal at nearby Ardrishaig opens up the west coast and islands beyond. Apart from the many services we have provided in the past, we can now offer free sail inspections, free removal of sails for laundering and repair and during 2011 we plan to equip ourselves to provide a small sail and cover repair service. We have also opened a fantastic new shop which offers a wide range of quality sailing gear, going ashore clothing, books, charts, cards and essential provisions. We already have plans to extend the shop and increase our stock of chandlery during 2011. We are pleased to announce the appointment of Graeme Galbraith during 2010 as Assistant Marina Manager and would like to wish Graeme well in this role and in the successful running of the shop and sail repair service. During the past year we have been delighted to support the RNLI by running functions and events, and to increase our activities further we have joined The RNLI Ambassadors Scheme. Through this scheme we hope we will be able to help increase the membership of this amazing organisation, thereby helping them provide this wonderful service to all us who want to be afloat. We would like to wish you a wonderful 2011 sailing season and look forward to welcoming customers old and new to Portavadie Marina in 2011. Best wishes Robert Kitchin Marina Manager www.portavadiemarina.com

The Crinan Canal The Crinan Canal meanders from Ardrishaig on Loch Fyne to Crinan through truly magnificent scenery, rich in history, with many world class heritage sites, a designated wildlife reserve and miles of forest walks and cycle ways. So step back in time, relax, slow down and stretch those sea legs ashore. Although only 14.5km in length the canal offers an opportunity to avoid an often difficult sail around the Mull of Kintyre and cuts around 160km off your journey. The Crinan Canal operates on a seasonal basis: 7 days per week in peak season, Monday to Saturday during Spring and Autumn and Monday to Friday during Winter. Please check with the local Canal Office or www.scottishcanals.co.uk for exact operating dates and times.

Nestling by the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond our family-owned Scotch whisky distillery takes its name and its exquisitely pure water from this most picturesque and celebrated of all Scotlandʼs lochs. The beauty and tranquility of the setting belies the considerable activity within one of the finest Scotch Whisky Distilleries. Uniquely designed stills enable us to produce a total of eight different fine single malt Scotch Whiskies. In addition, our new “state of the art” grain stills, the most modern in the land, arguably produce the very best single grain whisky in Scotland. At Loch Lomond dedicated experts have been nurturing distinctive drams for generations. The ever-mindful attention of our managers ensures that only the choicest ingredients are selected, then allowed to mature undisturbed within the finest oak barrels, crafted within the distillery by our very own coopers.
