Title

Welcome

A very warm welcome to Portavadie We are delighted that you made the journey to Portavadie Marina and hope that you enjoy your time with us. We are a destination with a marina at its heart, and offer contemporary accommodation, world-class food, beauty and wellbeing and, of course, breath-taking views. Sitting on the eastern shores of Loch Fyne, we are the perfect place to experience this beautiful, undiscovered part of Scotland – in comfort and style. Our accommodation ranges from luxury apartments to an eco-hideaway on the shore, all with three things in common – quality, contemporary comfort and value for money. There is something to suit everyone. The luxury apartments bring you top-of-the-range self-catering accommodation. Our cosy cottages, meanwhile, are dog friendly, as is our ever-popular couple’s retreat. For short breaks the new studio apartments offer unbeatable value. Over at the Lodge you will find flexible accommodation for families and groups, as well as bed and locker facilities for cyclists and walkers. We are passionate about food and our two restaurants offer delicious, freshly prepared food for all tastes. For award-winning, sumptuous dining and panoramic views of Loch Fyne, head to the Marina Restaurant. For something more informal, try the Lodge Kitchen and Bar. One thing you will always find on the menu is the very finest local produce, whether that is seafood from the loch or venison from the hills. If you fancy a bit of pampering, then try out our beauty and wellbeing service. We offer a fabulous range of treatments, from facials to relaxing massages, while our sports therapist can help sailors, walkers and cyclists soothe their tired muscles. Don’t forget to drop in to our shop and chandlery. You will find a hand-picked selection of gifts, clothing and shore-wear, as well as an ever-increasing range of chandlery. We hope the information in this booklet helps you make the most of your visit. The area is known as ‘Argyll’s Secret Coast’ because of its undiscovered charm, and it is packed with things to see and do. Do feel free to ask members of staff for tips and advice – they have lots of local knowledge and are more than happy to help out. I would also like to say a big thank you to our suppliers and partners who feature in this directory. Finally have a great time at Portavadie Marina and I look forward to meeting you. My best regards

Iain Jurgensen General Manager 5

Title Dining Restaurants and bars Our restaurants and bars offer award-winning food, a convivial atmosphere and panoramic loch views – all in beautiful, contemporary surroundings. Our culinary team is passionate about simple cooking using fresh, local and seasonal produce. Come and sample local seafood plucked straight from the loch or Winston Churchill’s venison, stalked by Winston himself. Enjoy breakfast on the terrace, a leisurely lunch and a Loch Fyne Ale in the Lodge, a predinner cocktail overlooking the marina or a dram by the fire before bed. Whatever you choose, you can be sure of a warm welcome and the very best of Scottish hospitality. For more information please contact us at info@portavadiemarina.com.

For that special occasion... Why not have the restaurant come to you? We will create a bespoke menu, prepare it and serve it to you and your guests in the comfort of your own accommodation. You can choose or let us design a menu to suit your tastes. You will get a chef and service team member to set your table, cook and service your chosen menu and help you create your menu. Our chefs will be delighted to offer advice on local produce and wines paired to your choices. We will always do our utmost to meet your requirements but this all takes us a bit of time, so please give us at least 72 hours notice. Given the demands of the regular restaurant, service is subject to availability and all bespoke dinners have a set start time of 6.30pm. The same menu items must be chosen for each of your guests. Our staff will leave after serving dessert and will use the crockery and glassware in your accommodation. They will stack the dishwasher during the service. Set-up fee Up to two guests £25 Up to five guests £45 Five to maximum of ten guests £120 Menu choice and wines are charged in addition to the set-up fee. There is a minimum spend per head of £30 including food and wine and a 50% deposit is required on booking. EatScotland says: “Set in a beautiful part of the Cowal Peninsula, this striking building houses a welcoming bar and restaurant, overlooking the adjacent marina. The delicious menu incorporates much locally sourced produce, freshly prepared and presented in interesting yet recognisable form. Portions are hearty and children are encouraged to sample from the main selection.” 9

Beauty & Wellbeing The Beauty Room at Portavadie – escape your fast-paced world to a quieter place I have been given this amazing opportunity, not only to be the resident beauty therapist here at Portavadie Marina, but to create The Beauty Room on the shores of Loch Fyne. We have converted one of the luxury apartments into our very own beauty salon. In this stunning space we have two treatment rooms as well as a relaxation/reception area with views out over the marina. I am running the salon along with Heather and Layla. We use Pure Lochside, a luxury Scottish brand that has a great ethos. The skincare range is unique, therapeutic and organic and the luxurious treatments will leave your skin bright and luminous and your body rejuvenated and glowing. This year we will be introducing even more treatments and products, together with special offers and events, so keep an eye out for the deals! You will find a full list of treatments and latest offers at the reception. I look forward to welcoming you to our wonderful new salon. Things to do

Loch Fyne

Kilfinan

Portavadie

This is Scotland as you have always imagined it to be – and more, making it the perfect place to visit at any time of the year. It is wild and remote, with hills, glens, rugged coast, white beaches, sea lochs, clear waters and ancient forests. It is peppered with pretty villages and welcoming pubs. The Cowal Peninsula is known as Argyll’s Secret Coast because of its undiscovered charm.

Kilfinan is a great spot for bird watching, walking, cycling, shooting and fishing. The 13th-century church guards the Kilfinan Stones within its vaults. These wellpreserved stones date back to the 9th century. Enjoy a drink in the Kilfinan Hotel, a traditional coaching house.

This small settlement on the eastern shore of Loch Fyne is a sleepy place. There is some lovely walking to be done in the nearby Glenan woods, or challenge yourself with the Cowal Way which starts here. For a great day trip, hop on the ferry and cross the water to the bustling fishing village of Tarbert. Browse the galleries, walk up to the castle and collect a seafood box from Prentice Seafoods, located at the ferry terminal in Tarbert, to take back for tea. The scallops are divine.

The area is packed with places to visit and things to do. Sailors, walkers, cyclists and artists are all drawn here. You will find plenty of restaurants and pubs serving up locally sourced food, including Loch Fyne’s worldfamous seafood. The original Loch Fyne Oyster Bar is well worth a visit, as is the Inverarary Jail and Castle.

14

Millhouse Lying east of Loch Asgog, Millhouse was the home to the Millhouse Gunpowder Mill. A powder tester cannon still remains in a field to the north of the crossroads. The timekeeping bell was restored and re-erected at the entrance to the cemetery in Millhouse along with the cannon in 2006 as a memorial to the workers killed in explosions.

Kames Kames has a post office, church and village hall that often hosts coffee mornings, dances and shows from the local clubs. Duncan’s Village Store, winner of the Scottish Food and Drink Neighbourhood Store of the year 2010, provides a great range of grocery products, wines and spirits, newspapers and more. The hilly nine-hole

golf course has spectacular views down the Kyles of Bute, but you will need to watch out for wandering sheep. The Kames Hotel is a great place to catch up with locals and have a game of pool. There is often live music.

Tighnabruaich The pretty loch-side village of Tighnabruaich has a gift shop, art gallery, post office, Spar shop and a coffee shop. Check out the Royal Hotel and enjoy a dram in the Shinty Bar or some delicious seafood in the restaurant. The Burnside Bistro is renowned for its home cooking, while the recently opened Wellpark Hotel offers up tasty local fare in a stunning location. The village is home to Kyles Athletic, one of Scotland’s most successful shinty clubs. If you are here during the shinty season, try and catch one of their games. Another highlight is a trip down the loch on board the Waverley, the world’s last ocean-going paddle steamer.

Ardlamont Point

Otter Ferry

Ardlamont Point separates Loch Fyne and the Kyles of Bute with fantastic views of the Isle of Arran and the Kintyre. Enjoy coffee and home baking at Ardlamont Coach House and take a walk to the stunning crescentshaped sandy Kilbride Bay. The point is rich in history and you will find standing stones and a cup-and-ring marked rock.

The name is not believed to be connected to the furry animal, but is said to be derived from the Gaelic word oitir (spit land or sandbank). The views are fantastic and the Oystercatcher Pub and Restaurant is a great place for a drink on a summer’s day.

Glendaruel Glendaruel is sometimes called the ‘gentler Highlands’. Ramble in the woodlands or take part in a spot of trout and salmon fishing on the Ruel. The ruined Dunans Castle is also worth a look. It can be seen on maps dating back to 1590.

By Water

The Marina We have now entered our fifth year and we are delighted that more and more people are visiting our sheltered harbour and using our onshore facilities. Situated on Loch Fyne, our marina is the gateway to some of the best sailing waters in the west coast of Scotland, providing both challenging passages and sheltered waters for all levels of ability and inclination. Islands, harbours, safe anchorages and good shoreside facilities are within easy reach for those who wish stay within the areas of the Clyde and the Kyles of Bute, while the entrance to the Crinan Canal at nearby Ardrishaig opens up the west coast and islands beyond.

This year we are pleased to be hosting new events. We will be the focal point for more club musters and racing events, including the Police Regatta and the Flying Fifteen Travellers Series in June. We are also planning events for berth holders and we would like to start a cruise-in company designed to bring like-minded people together. We are keen to encourage model boat sailing weekends and customers events on or in the water throughout the season. So look out for email announcements and notices and come and join in. We will be continuing to support the RNLI this year through events, a fund-raising dinner and the RNLI Ambassadors Scheme. Berth holder contributions and involvement in these activities would be very welcome.

As promised, we will be extending our shop and chandlery for the 2012 season. As well as basic provisions and local produce, we will stock the latest top-quality sailing and going-ashore clothing and a range of chandlery from shackles to rubber dinghies. We want to provide the very best facilities and services here at Portavadie Marina and we would like you to tell us how we are doing. Please do take the time to fill in our questionnaire which is available at reception or the marina office. In 2011 our weather left a little to be desired, so let’s hope the sun will shine on us all in 2012. Good sailing and best regards Robert Kitchin Marina Manager

Situated just a few miles to the north of the Isle of Arran, we are positioned at the heart of the beautiful cruising grounds of Loch Fyne. We are ideally located to give access to the Firth of Clyde and some of the finest sailing waters in the world. Loch Fyne provides sheltered waters for the new sailor and more challenging passages for more experienced crews. Waterways

The Caledonian Canal The 96.5km Caledonian Canal is truly the ‘International Gateway’ to cruising in Scotland. Stretching from Inverness to Fort William, it is without doubt one of the great waterways of the world, offering visitors afloat and ashore spectacular scenery. It operates seven days a week in spring, summer and autumn. During the winter it operates Monday to Friday.

The Crinan Canal The Crinan Canal meanders from Ardrishaig on Loch Fyne to Crinan through truly magnificent scenery, rich in history, with many world-class heritage sites, a designated wildlife reserve and miles of forest walks along the way. So step back in time, relax, slow down and stretch those sea legs ashore. Although only 14.5km in length the canal offers an opportunity to avoid an often difficult sail around the Mull of Kintyre and cuts around 160km off your journey. It operates seven days a week in peak season, Monday to Saturday during spring and autumn and Monday to Friday during winter. Please check with the local canal office or www.scottishcanals.co.uk for exact operating dates and times.

Directions Title Portavadie is around 80 miles by road from Glasgow Airport. The nearest rail station is at Gourock where you can catch the Calmac ferry to Dunoon. It is possible to travel by bus from Glasgow to Portavadie, changing in Dunoon, but services are infrequent.

Getting here by sea: From seaward, Portavadie Marina is situated on the east side of Loch Fyne in position Latitude 55°52’26.2N Longitude 5°18’52.3W With obvious fish farm activities to the east and west, there is clear water to the entrance where two concrete pillars with white painted tops are situated. During the hours of darkness, the navigation lights on the top of the entrance pillars have the following characteristics:

Option 1 Take the A82 along Loch Lomond to Tarbet, then the A83 towards Inveraray and Campbeltown. At Cairndow, turn left on to the A815, then at Strachur turn right on to the A886, signposted Glendaruel and Colintraive. Just after Glendaruel, turn right on to the A8003 for Tighnabruaich then continue on the A8000 towards Portavadie. At Millhouse A83 follow the signs for Ferry and Portavadie Marina.

A83

A8003 Erines

Give the fish farm cages a good offing to avoid mooring lines. There is deep water on the approach to the entrance where there is a sill, over which there is a minimum sounding of approximately 4.5 m at low water.

Please call us on VHF Channel 80, or call us on 01700 811075 during office hours to arrange a berth.

34

Take the A8 to Gourock, then Western Ferries from McInroy’s Point to Hunter’s Quay near Dunoon. Turn right on to A815, then shortly after leaving the 40mph area, turn left on B836, a single track road with passing places. After about 17 miles, turn right on A886, then left on A8003 towards Tighnabruaich, Kames and Portavadie. Alternatively, take the ferry from Gourock to Dunoon, then turn right on A885 towards A815 and follow instructions as above. Portavadie Marina is now signposted from A886 Strachur and Dunoon/Hunters’ Quay.

A886

FI (2) G 8s range 4nm and FI R 2s range 2 nm.

On the west side of the marina in the area of S Pontoons, be aware that there is a shelf that runs parallel to the marina building and down towards the access bridge, approximately half way out into the fairway. This shelf is marked by perches and the depth of the water at each point is shown in metres on the perch.

Friendship is like whisky, the older the better

Nestling by the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond our family-owned Scotch whisky distillery takes its name and its exquisitely pure water from this most picturesque and celebrated of all Scotlandʼs lochs. The beauty and tranquility of the setting belies the considerable activity within one of the finest Scotch Whisky Distilleries. Uniquely designed stills enable us to produce a total of eight different fine single malt Scotch Whiskies. In addition, our new “state of the art” grain stills, the most modern in the land, arguably produce the very best single grain whisky in Scotland. At Loch Lomond dedicated experts have been nurturing distinctive drams for generations. The ever-mindful attention of our managers ensures that only the choicest ingredients are selected, then allowed to mature undisturbed within the finest oak barrels, crafted within the distillery by our very own coopers.
