What does your kitchen mean to you?


5 Often referred to as ‘the heart of the home’, the role of the kitchen has evolved over the years. Not only is the kitchen the place where we prepare, cook and eat our meals but where children do their homework, adults congregate and even where some small businesses are based. Because the kitchen’s role has evolved, so has its layout and design requirements. It’s no longer a room we close the door on, but a room which we want to attract visitors into, and to feel at home in. But, if you can’t afford a brand new showroom kitchen, how can you breathe fresh life into your kitchen to prepare for a house sale?

Freshening up

Lighting

On top of the obvious deep clean, re-painting the kitchen walls in a brand new colour can give your kitchen an instant lift. If you’re planning to sell up soon, best avoid any brave colour choices which might put off prospective viewers. Think light, bright and practical.

Installing entirely new light fittings can be unnecessarily expensive, but buying new, brighter bulbs can add extra sparkle to your kitchen. These days, you can easily get much brighter bulbs which are still energy-saving, so you will save money too.

When it comes to tiles, get rid of any cracked or broken tiles and remember to tile over the sink area to keep it waterproof and hygienic. If you love your patterns, why not alternate between plain and patterned tiles? It will keep costs down, and appeal to most potential buyers.

Upgrading Even upgrading your kitchen cupboards can give a whole new lease of life to the space. As kitchen cupboards make up the majority of space in the kitchen, well-chosen doors can transform the tattiest of kitchens. Appliances can be hidden behind cupboard doors too, so door upgrades are a sure-fire way of achieving an instant makeover.

Moving If you have a free-standing fridge or dishwasher, trying swapping them around to see if it’s a better use of space. Consider moving the kitchen table to a different section of the room, re-shuffle some cupboard contents or, if you’re lucky enough to have a large kitchen, think about rejigging the sofa and TV. Sometimes even the smallest of changes can make the biggest difference, and make your kitchen more user-friendly too.
