Captain’s Message

I

t is a great pleasure and privilege for me, as Captain of the Royal Musselburgh Golf Club, to welcome you to our first Yearbook. Our aim is twofold. We wish to give visitors, guests and potential members an introduction to our Club, its history and current activities. We hope too that our members, particularly the new members we welcomed into the Club in 2009, will find the Yearbook interesting and informative. Both the course and the Clubhouse have benefitted from substantial investment in recent years. An historic A listed building provides a wonderful facility for our members and our visitors alike to enjoy; but it is also a major responsibility. The recent letting of refurbished rooms as office accommodation for small businesses generates welcome revenue for the Club. The programme of drainage works undertaken over recent years, including the rebuilding of the 9th green this winter, is helping to ensure that the course can cope well with the vagaries of a changing climate. We are honoured that the Royal Musselburgh has been asked to host several important events in the 2010 East of Scotland

golfing calendar. In May, ours will be one of the qualifying courses for the Lothians Championship; in June, we host the Ladies East Division Inter-County matches; and in August, the Club provides the venue for the East Lothian Junior Championship. In July, the Royal Musselburgh is one of three local courses presenting a new tournament, the Musselburgh Golf Experience. And in August we will host the second staging of the Scottish Hickory Open Championship. This comprises a fourball pairs and a singles competition. It is aimed at attracting the ordinary club golfer and all hickory clubs are supplied. Details of these and other events and social activities will be posted on the Club website www.royalmusselburgh.co.uk and I would recommend members and potential visitors to make use of this valuable communication tool. We are fortunate to have a large practice area located at the entrance to the club and in the longer term we hope this will become an integral and largely self-financing part of the Club’s infrastructure. The 2010 season is fast approaching and I wish our members an enjoyable and successful year with putts dropping and handicaps following suit. To our visitors and guests in 2010, I promise you a warm welcome here. We are proud of our Club and its place in the history of golf and we hope that your visit will leave you yearning to come back soon.

History T

he Royal Musselburgh Golf Club is the fifth oldest golf club in the world dating back to 1774, starting its life at the 9 hole Musselburgh Links course, which, according to the Guinness book of records, is the oldest golf course in the world still played over. The Club moved along the coast to it’s present location of Prestongrange Estate in 1926,where on the 29th of September in that year the official opening was carried out by four Open Champions, namely, Mr H.Vardon, Mr J. Braid, Mr A. Herd and Mr J.H. Taylor, and it has flourished there ever since. Pride of place at the club is The Old Club Cup, dating back to 1774, is the oldest golfing trophy in the world still played for. This iconic trophy is usually on display in the British Golf Museum in St Andrews, but is brought back to the club annually, a winner’s medal attached, then presented – to the player with the lowest scratch score in the ’Autumn Meeting’– at the club’s annual dinner held in December.

6

The irregular size of golf holes was causing some concern in the early 1800’s and an ‘instrument’ to standardise the hole, was made in 1829. Since then all holes have been made to this size all over the world. This ‘instrument’, the original hole-cutter, still belongs to the club and has recently been adopted as the trophy awarded to the Scottish Hickory Open Champion. In 1834, the year in which King William IV gave the title of Royal and Ancient to the St Andrews Club, a new set of regulations for playing the game was issued by the Musselburgh club. The Regulations are well worth reading by all golf enthusiasts and a copy of these can be found in the Royal Musselburgh Golf Club 225th anniversary book. The Royal Musselburgh Golf Club was awarded its Royal Status in 1876 soon after H.R.H. the Duke of Connaught (the third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert), graciously consented to become Hon. President of the Club until his death in 1942. In 1897 the Duke presented the Club with a silver cup, known as the Connaught Cup, which is played for annually to this day. Our magnificent clubhouse with a fascinating history dating back to 12th century, and owned by the local aristocracy prior to our move here in 1926, has been tastefully modified to accommodate all aspects required

by modern golfers. This outstanding ‘A’ listed building provides not only a memorable backdrop to a round of golf, but splendid views over the course and beyond. The Royal Musselburgh Golf Club have been gifted many items of golfing memorabilia, some dating back to the 17th century, by past members and friends, the most valuable of these, apart from the Old Club Cup, are currently locked away for safe keeping. It is the club’s intention to form a golfing museum to allow more golf enthusiasts to view these very special items. The Club were privileged to host The R&A World Junior Open Golf Championship in 2002, which was an outstanding success. The Royal Musselburgh Golf Club has an important place in golfing history and recognises the responsibilities to past, present and future generations of enthusiasts for this great game. We also endeavour to ensure that our visitors and guests take home fond memories of the fifth oldest golf club in the world. To that end, our highly experienced and trained staff in green-keeping, Professional’s shop and the clubhouse will do all they can to make your visit, one you will be eager to repeat.

Ladies Golf

A

s another season comes to an end we can reflect on 2009 as a very successful year for lots of you. The weather was very mixed this season with the course being closed on only two occasions but all our medals and competitions did go ahead as scheduled. Before the 2009 season got under way the Ladies Section were very fortunate to receive the proceeds of the Valentines Cabaret raffle. We are hosting another cabaret on 13th February so your support on this night will be very much appreciated. Five ladies joined the club at the open week-end in April and the Ladies committee welcomed them with an introduction night. We played a few holes of golf then enjoyed some refreshments in the bar. The good weather throughout the winter months allowed us to play in the winter league every Sunday from November through to March and it proved yet again to be a great success. Our open day in May went very well with many visitors commenting on the good condition of the course. After last year’s disappointment at the cancellation on two occasions of the Ladies Senior Greensomes, it did go ahead as scheduled in August. The championship final was keenly contested between May Imlah and Wilma Gilmour with Wilma the winner this year. The Bronze final was eagerly fought between Anne Fairgrieve and Linda Paterson with Linda the winner. Congratulations to all.

Each year we take part in the East Lothian 5-a-side League and this year the team consisted of – Pam Hall, Gwen Rodgers, Gill Ellis-Pow, Mary Robertson, Anne Fairgrieve, Janette Buchanan and Wilma Gilmour. We participate in the Midlothian Interclub and Morrison Millar competitions and the East Lothian Sime Salver, which was hosted here at Royal Musselburgh last year and was a great success. Friendly Matches take place each season played against Broomieknowe, Newbattle, Monktonhall, Gifford and Dirleton Castle. The Coronation 4’s and Daily Mail 4’s are played throughout the Summer and the winner go forward to the area finals. We undertake a number of Charity Events throughout the year and these are very well attended from all sections of the Club. Finally I feel honored to be Lady Captain at such a sociable and relaxed club in such beautiful surroundings. Although we are a small ladies section, we have some very talented and committed members who are always helpful and encouraging to others.

Practice Facilities T

he practice ground at Royal Musselburgh is the ideal place for members and guests to iron out their faults. The full length of the range being over 300 yards enables you to hit a full drive. For the short finesse shots and bunker practice there is a pitching green with a large bunker. During inclement weather you could take advantage of the large function hall and the golf professional’s GASP system to analyse your golf swing with video and PC Once your swing is in tune you could relax with a game of indoor bowls.

The Course T

he Royal Musselburgh Golf Club, founded in 1774, originally played over the famous 9 hole links course at Levenhall, Musselburgh. In 1926 the move was made to the present location at Prestongrange House, Prestonpans. This engaging parkland course was designed by James Braid and affords wonderful vistas over Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth. The front nine provides a fair challenge, but beware the ‘sting in the tail’; the final third of the course can make or break a score. The tough four hole stretch from the long par four 13th includes the ‘gully’ a par 3 (14th) where to be short is to be court disaster, followed by one of the best par fours in the Lothians. From the medal tee at the 15th, huddled tight beside the trees to the left, a precision drive is required to find the rollercoasting fairway. From there a long iron is played over an uphill approach to a tilting green.

This parkland course as designed by James Baird and in contrast with many of East Lothian’s courses offers golfers views of Edinburgh and Arthur’s Seat. The golfing challenge comes on the homeward stretch where a series of par 4s are well protected by trees. One of the oldest clubs in the world, the magnificent clubhouse has a superb collection of golfing memorabilia. 18 Holes, Gents par 70, 6,254 yards Ladies par 73, 5,587 yards Special feature: the par 3 14th, ‘The Gully’, penalises short approach shots with a 35 foot drop just in front of the putting surface. 3

Clubhouse Facilities T

he Clubhouse is a large building which has been much altered and extended over several centuries and is of considerable architectural and historical interest.

Exterior stairs from the short passage between the Lounge Bar and the Dining Room lead down to a small patio area overlooking the 3rd fairway.

The Clubhouse caters for members, guests and visitors. Nongolfers can become social members (subscription only £15) and can thus enjoy the bar and restaurant facilities.

The Dining Room has fine views to the north and south and equally fine food is served here or in the Lounges. It is the venue for a popular Sunday Carvery all year round. The childfriendly atmosphere (high chairs available) and superb decor make for an enjoyable family dining experience.

The dress code throughout the building is smart/casual. Locker rooms are located on the ground floor providing storage and changing accommodation for male and female members and visitors. Toilets, including a toilet for the disabled, and showers/washrooms are located here. Visitors’ lockers can be accessed by obtaining the entry code number from the Professional’s shop. A large function suite built in the late 1950s is also located at ground floor level. With its own entrance, bar and kitchen and a stage, it is ideally suited for wedding receptions, dinners, dances, conferences and other Club and private functions. It is also used for indoor golf tuition, carpet bowls and ‘keep fit’ classes. The hall can accommodate up to 150 people for functions with full meals and up to 200 people for other events with or without buffet food. The Jim Bush Lounge Bar, the Royal Lounge and the Dining Room are three splendid rooms on the first floor reached by an imposing, north-facing staircase. The Lounge Bar houses trophy cabinets, pictures and comfortable seating. There are two televisions and two discreetly-located gaming machines contributing to a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

26

The Royal Lounge looks out over the 18th fairway towards the Firth of Forth. With its own ‘snug’ bar, it is ideal for seminars/small conferences and can comfortably accommodate up to 60 people for private parties and other functions. Other facilities include a snooker room with two full-size tables, indoor bowls, a Boardroom where all official meetings are held and a suite of recently refurbished rooms let as office accommodation for small businesses.

Bookings, Enquiries and Catering Bookings for the function suite, the Royal Lounge and other small meeting rooms may be directed to the Management Office. Enquiries about renting office accommodation should also be directed here. Catering for visiting parties or functions (including, respectfully, funerals) can be arranged through the Management Office or direct with the Caterer, Steven Cross.

Out & About

M

usselburgh and Prestonpans are situated approx 15 miles east of Edinburgh, ideally situated for exploring Scotland’s capital, The Lothians and the North Berwick Coast. Stately homes, dramatic castles and whisky distilleries all provide a sense of Scotland’s impressive history. So if you can tear yourself away from the delights and demands of our golf course there is a huge range of activities and places to visit to suit all tastes. Take in the delights of Edinburgh with streets steeped in history and a thriving cultural scene, the city offers the perfect balance between all things traditional and contemporary. Nature lovers can flock to The Bass Rock, rising 313 feet from the sea. It is the closest sea bird sanctuary to the mainland and was the first to be studied by ornithologists during the 19th

28

century. The famous Bass Rock gannets cover the island, described by Sir David Attenborough as “one of the wildlife wonders of the world”. In a stunning location overlooking the sea and sandy beaches, you’ll enjoy a great day out at the Scottish Seabird Centre with its exciting Discovery Centre, Gift Shop and Café with open decking over the sea. There are a lot of seabirds to be seen, including shags, cormorants, terns and kittiwakes. Dolphins and otters can also be spotted in the bay. John Muir Country Park can be enjoyed by both a family enjoying the outdoors and the natural history enthusiast. It supports a wide range of habitats, birds and plants. Step back in history to some of Scotland’s most impressive castles and stately homes. The ruins of Tantallon Castle, North Berwick are a formidable sight and offer spectacular views of Bass Rock. Dirleton Castle, Dirleton boasts magnificent gardens, which now include the world’s longest herbaceous border. Lennoxlove House is perfect

for a short break, a wedding reception, a corporate event, a golfing weekend or even as a retreat to simply get away from it all. Take a step back in time at Newhailes, an amazing survival of early 18th century decorative art and collections, set within a late 17th century ‘Villa’. The National Museum of Flight at East Fortune Airfield invites the visitor to discover the extraordinary story of our human ambition to take to the skies. East Fortune played an important role during two World Wars. Now the National Museum of Flight hangars are packed with aircraft that reveal how flight developed from the Wright brothers to Concorde.

The stunningly picturesque Preston Mill & Phantassie Doocot lies close to the River Tyne a few hundred yards downstream of East Linton. The present buildings are from the 18th century, though there has been a Mill on the site since the 16th century. The Mill was used commercially until 1959 and visitors can still experience the working machinery on a tour. And after all that, you will undoubtedly want to sample a ‘wee dram’. Visit Glenkinchie Distillery and tour round the production area where you will learn how to make the water of life, and, of course, sample their excellent 12 Year Old Single Malt.
