Dear Visitor

W

elcome to Tarbert for the 2010 season. I hope your visit will be an enjoyable one. The additional facilities the Board provided last year have been well received and with the grant awarded by the Scottish Government through its Town Centre Regeneration Fund further improvements have been provided. The Board will continue to work towards improving the shoreside facilities further in the future. We hope the information in this book together with the easier access to the Village, Castle and the additional and improved seating areas together with the many walks available will mean that your visit is all the more enjoyable and that you’ll return again next year to see even more improvements. Yours sincerely Alan Macdonald Chairman Board of Trustees

Approach by sea

E

ast Loch Tarbert is approached by heading northwards up Lower Loch Fyne. Loch Fyne is situated to the north of the Isle of Arran and is reached by passing through Inchmarnock water.East Loch Tarbert lies on the west side of Lower Loch Fyne, opposite Portavadie on the east side. A ferry service links across Loch Fyne at this point. The initial entrance to East Loch Tarbert is wide and clear. In the closer approaches Madadh Maol, a drying reef extending northwards from the south shore of the Loch needs to be left well off on your port side. Its extremity is marked by a red light Colum (FI.R.2.5s). Do not pass close to the light structure, there is plenty of deep water to the north of it. Starting from a point about 100 m north of the Madadh Maol light beacon, a south westerly course will bring you through the main channel south of Eilean a ‘Choic (Cock Island). The channel is less than 100m wide. Reefs projecting from the south of Cock Island, are marked by a green light post (Q.G), which needs to be left to starboard.

Once past Cock Island the new pontoons will be seen.... make for these being very careful to leave a green perch beacon with a triangular topmark (VQ.G) well to starboard. This marks a drying rock lying about 80m WSW of Cock Island. Don’t make your turn to starboard too early... An alternative route to the north of Cock Island and the drying reefs and rocks of Sgeir Bhuidhe will be seen on the charts provided for those intrepid enough to try it.

rom Glasgow west follow the M8 through the centre of Glasgow and head towards Loch Lomond, taking the Erskine Bridge turn off before you get to Greenock. Cross the bridge and follow the A82 towards Crianlarich. Stay on the A82 and pick up the A83 travelling along the banks of Loch Lomond, signposted Inveraray and Campbeltown, continue along this road through Inveraray, Lochgilphead, Ardrishaig and finally to Tarbert (Loch Fyne). 7

Out and About - Local Area

T

arbert is a small fishing village on the West Coast of Loch Fyne and is ideally based for taking a few days to enjoy the local area or to take some sheltered day sails further up Loch Fyne or down to Arran or the Kyles of Bute. It may even be worthwhile considering basing your boat here. This would allow you to enjoy the friendly atmosphere of the local 8

hostelries, mild climate and sailing in some of the best waters in the Country all year round. Tarbert is a yachtsman’s paradise with a ‘safe harbour’, good food and drink with many welcoming hotels and restaurants. It also boasts a fine selection of retail outlets, Galleries, Supermarket and a Post Office. It is a popular stopping off point for boats

heading out to the west coast through the Crinan Canal. Overlooking Tarbert are the remains of Robert the Bruce’s castle, which is well worth a visit; even if only to see the feral sheep, used to keep the grass under control. Adjacent to the castle are Forestry Commission walks with viewpoints looking down to Bute

and the Heads of Ayr, the Cowal Hills, Mid Argyll and on to Ben Cruhacan. From the heart of the village you will find many short walks. The White Shore on the north side of the harbour is popular with a forest trail leading to a bird hide and the secluded bay of the White Shore itself. A stroll around the harbour, past the fish quay and on

to the slipway for the Tarbert – Portavadie ferry where just a little bit further on is the ‘Shell Beach’ a beach composed entirely of scallop shells. When out and about around the harbour you will find many interesting Interpretation Boards with useful information detailing other interesting walks, the history

of Tarbert, its Fishing Industry, the White Shore, Harbour Bird Life and much more For the more energetic walker, why not take the bus to Skipness and return over the hills via the first section of the Kintyre Way (Pamphlets available from the Harbour Office or local Tourist Office). 9

Out and About - Local Area

If after all this you still have some spare time Tarbert has a well maintained 9 hole golf course, charter boats for diving, sea fishing from the East Pier and rocks, some quiet bays and picnic areas. Regular visitors to Tarbert will notice that as part of the ÂŁ1mllion Town Centre Regeneration Initiative Grant provided by the Scottish Government to improve and strengthen the integration of Tarbert Town Centre and its 10

Harbour, November 2009 saw the demolition of Dickies old boatyard shed on the north side of the harbour. The shed had remained unused for many years and following preparation of the site, the area has now been landscaped, with seating and picnic tables. A new harbour footway has also been created, linking the pontoons and the town centre with a safe pedestrian route. This route allows visitors to move from the pontoons to the

town centre and other parts of the harbour and on to the Castle. Further improvements to the town centre include improved seating and flowerbeds, refurbished public toilets and car parking. It is envisaged, in the not too distant future, that the Harbour Authority will be able to redevelop the site still further. The new development will include new toilet and shower facilities, new permanent offices for the Harbour Authority, a restaurant, self

catering accommodation, cafe, offices, retail units and additional car parking. Tarbert is the host of the 2nd biggest sailing event in the UK. The ‘Scottish Series’, which is held at the end of May each year for four days and brings in approx 200 visiting yachts to the village. The Series is only one of many events held in Tarbert throughout the summer. The first weekend of July sees the ‘Tarbert Seafood Festival’, a weekend filled with

fun. The last Wednesday of July, the village celebrates ‘Tarbert Fair’. The Fair, which lasts for four days, has been coming to Tarbert for over 200 years without a break. Nearer the end of the season in September is the ‘Tarbert Music Festival’, this very popular event boasts fine musicians playing at all the Tarbert hotels and restaurants. The Fish Quay at the opposite side of the Harbour from the Marina is where Tarbert’s small fishing fleet

berths overnight. High quality fresh fish and shellfish are landed daily. Most of what isn’t used by the local restaurants is destined for markets in Spain and France. Many of the hotels and restaurants serve the local seafood and other local produce such as beef and venison. Around the harbour there are also smaller cafe’s and fast food outlets serving food all day to eat in or take away.

or those visitors who wish to stretch their sea legs ashore and explore further afield there are good bus and ferry services within easy reach of Tarbert. Timetables for the ferries (to the Cowal Peninsula, Islay, Arran and Gigha) and buses can be obtained from the Harbour Office or Tourist Information Centre. Well worth a visit is the Crinan Canal, one of Scotland’s most picturesque waterways. The area is steeped in history, a designated wildlife reserve and boasts miles of forest walks and cycle ways. The canal meanders from Ardrishaig on Loch Fyne to Crinan, so why not hire a cycle at Ardrishaig and explore the area in your own time.

Campbeltown, popularly known as ‘The Wee Toon’ is the largest settlement in Kintyre and home to the oldest operating cinema in the country. Close to Campbeltown, located in the small village of Machrihanish on the western side of the Kintyre Peninsula, you will find two championship golf courses – reputed to be two of the best courses in the country – and a must visit for the keen golfer. A little further afield is Inveraray. This 18th century picturesque royal burgh sits on the shores of Loch Fyne, with many interesting shops, including an old style pharmacy and ‘Loch Fyne Whiskies’. Why not visit the old Inveraray Jail, now a popular tourist attraction or take in a visit to Inveraray Castle and gardens, seat of the Duke of Argyll, Chief of the Clan Campbell.

or those visitors who prefer to stay with their boats, there are equally as many interesting and accessible places.

Day sails Otter Ferry located on the East Shore of Loch Fyne, just north of Otter Spit is one such place. Here you can enjoy a leisurely drink, lunch or evening meal at the pub and restaurant right on the beach, with access to a pontoon by tender or small boat at all states of the tide. Lochgair offers a sheltered anchorage and hotel. Lochranza at the northern tip of Arran in Kilbrannan Sound has visitor moorings and a landing stage with

tearooms, hotel, golf club, whisky distillery and ancient castle. Portavadie, on the Eastern side of Loch Fyne, across the loch from Tarbert, provides a marina with bar and restaurant.

Overnight sails Basing your boat in Tarbert, even for a few days, affords you the opportunity to take an overnight sail to the many interesting and scenic locations the area has to offer: Locations such as: Carradale, Campbeltown, Whiting Bay, Brodick (Arran), Lamlash (Arran), Rothesay, Largs, Millport, Kyles of Bute, Kames, Tighnabruaich, Loch Ridden, Colintraive, the upper reaches of the Firth of Clyde and the upper reaches of Loch Fyne itself. 13

arbert (Loch Fyne) Harbour Authority is a Trust Port established by Act of Parliament in 1912. It is an independent statutory body governed by its own legislation and guided by Government Code of Practice. The Governance of the Authority is undertaken by a Board of eight Trustees, four of whom are elected by the local community, three by appointment with the eighth 22

member being the Port Manager and Harbour Master. It is a not for profit making organisation recognised as a Social Enterprise. The Authority is like any other self – financing business dependent on cash flow and profits for its successful operation. All profits or surpluses are reinvested to ensure that the facilities and infra structure are properly maintained and improved for the benefit of its users.

The Authority also works closely with the local community supporting local events and providing stakeholder benefits through leisure and amenity improvements. Notes: The Harbour Authority Shoreside Improvements The Grant received from the Scottish Government’s Town Centre Regeneration Fund has allowed the Authority to purchase

the old boatyard site and to provide a direct pedestrian access to the village and on round to the Castle steps. The steps themselves have been improved and the Castle was recently awarded a Grant to allow it to be stabilised and protected for the future. The feral sheep themselves, used for grass maintenance are worth seeing in their own right. The public toilets adjacent to the Fish Quay have been refurbished

thanks to Argyll and Bute Council together with some traffic management improvements at the junctions. The seating areas have been improved and the older furniture recycled to form a recreation area on the boatyard site where further improvements will be made when funds are available. Future Improvements The Authority in conjunction with the Crown Estate have

been looking into the feasibility of developing commercial and retail facilities together with new Harbour Offices and a Toilet, Shower and Launderette Block. The Feasibility Study has just been completed and subject to a suitable funding package being worked out this work will progress in the near future. Detailed planning permission will be applied for during the summer months. 23
