Dear Visitor On behalf of the Trustees and Staff may I welcome you to Tarbert. I hope your visit will be an enjoyable and memorable one. The amenity area created in 2010 continues to evolve with the addition of an outdoor gym facility, boules court, outdoor table tennis and seasonal marquee for public covered use. The chandlery opened in 2011, has also proved a great asset to the Harbour. In early 2012 the Harbour was successful in the award of a £200,000 grant from the Scottish Government’s Enterprise Growth Fund. This funding together with Harbour Funds has enabled the Board to provide much needed additional berthing facilities. The scheme is designed to provide berthing for an additional forty boats to meet the identified need in both size and numbers. Although the economic climate for the next few years does not look favourable the Harbour Board remain determined to bring you better and improved shore side facilities, which will allow for the growth of the existing business and help sustain the local economy during this period of financial restraint. 2012 also sees the centenary of the Act of Parliament, which established Tarbert (Loch Fyne) Harbour Authority. To celebrate this, the Harbour Authority are in the process of putting together a brochure to be available in the autumn. Copies of this will be available from the Harbour Office. 2013 will be the centenary of the Harbour Authority’s existence and suggestions to help celebrate this would be most welcome. We hope you find this Yearbook helpful during your visit and we wish you a successful and enjoyable 2012 yachting season. Yours sincerely Alan Macdonald Chairman, Board of Trustees If you would like to receive our quarterly Newsletter, please leave your name and address or e-mail at the Harbour Office or apply on line at our website www.tarbertharbour.co.uk

2012/13

Approach by Sea East Loch Tarbert lies on the west side of Loch Fyne. Loch Fyne is situated to the north of the Isle of Arran. A ferry link links across Loch Fyne at this point. The initial entrance to East Loch Tarbert is wide and clear. In the closer approaches Madadh Maol, a drying reef extending northwards from the south shore of the Loch needs to be left well off on your port side. Its extremity is marked by a red light Column (FI.R.2.5s). Do not pass close to the light structure, there is plenty of deep water to the north of it. Starting from a point about 100m north of the Madadh Maol light beacon, a south westerly course will bring you through the main channel south of Eilean a ‘Choic (Cock Island). The channel is less than 100m wide.

An alternative route to the north of Cock Island and the drying reefs and rocks of Sgeir Bhuidhe will be seen on the charts provided for those intrepid enough to try it.

Approach by Land From Glasgow west follow the M8 through the centre of Glasgow and head towards Loch Lomond, taking the Erskine Bridge turn off before you get to Greenock. Cross the bridge and follow the A82 towards Crianlarich. Stay on the A82 and pick up the A83 travelling along the banks of Loch Lomond, signposted Inveraray and Campbeltown, continue along this road through Inveraray, Lochgilphead, Ardrishaig and finally to Tarbert (Loch Fyne).

Reefs projecting from the south of Cock Island, are marked by a green light post (Q.G), which needs to be left to starboard. Once past Cock Island the new pontoons will be seen. Make for these but leave the green buoy (VQ.G) to starboard. 7

Out and About – Local Area Tarbert is a small fishing village situated on the West Coast of Loch Fyne and is an ideal base for taking a few days to enjoy the local area or to take some sheltered day sails further up Loch Fyne or down to Arran or the Kyles of Bute. It may even be worthwhile considering basing your boat here. This would allow you to enjoy the friendly atmosphere of the local hostelries, mild climate and sailing in some of the best waters in the Country all year round. Tarbert is a yachtsman’s paradise with a ‘safe harbour’ good food and drink with many welcoming hotels and restaurants. It also boasts a fine selection of retail outlets, Galleries, Supermarket and a Post Office. It is a popular stopping off point for boats heading out to the west coast through the Crinan Canal.

Overlooking Tarbert are the remains of Robert the Bruce’s castle, which is well worth a visit; even if only to see the feral sheep used to keep the grass under control. Adjacent to the castle are Forestry Commission walks with viewpoints looking down to Bute and the Heads of Ayr, the Cowal Hills, Mid Argyll and on to Ben Cruhacan. From the heart of the village you will find many short walks. The White Shore on the north side of the harbour is popular with a woodland trail leading to a bird hide and the secluded bay of the White Shore itself. A stroll around the harbour, past the fish quay and on to the slipway for the Tarbert – Portavadie ferry where just a little bit further on is the ‘Shell Beach’ a beach composed entirely of scallop shells. 8

When out and about around the harbour you will find many interesting Interpretation Boards with useful information detailing other interesting walks, the history of Tarbert, its Fishing Industry, the White Shore, harbour bird life and much more. For the more energetic walker, why not take the bus to Skipness and return over the hills via the first section of the Kintyre Way (pamphlets available from the Harbour Office or Local Tourist Office). If after all this you still have some spare time Tarbert has a well maintained 9 hole golf course, charter boats for diving, sea fishing from the East Pier and rocks, some quiet bays and picnic areas. The harbour walkway linking the pontoons to the town centre is extremely popular with locals and vistors alike. The walkway allows visitors to move safely from the pontoons to the town centre and other parts of the harbour and on to the Castle, which is now undergoing the final of three annual stages of stonework consolidation. The harbour amenity area adjacent to the walkway continues to evolve. 2011 saw the addition of shade sails, barbecues and an outdoor gym area. An outdoor Table Tennis Table and dedicated Boules playing area have already been added in early 2012 and a seasonal marquee for public use is also planned in time for the Scottish Series.

Another welcome addition to the harbour facilities is the ‘Tarbert Chandlery’, which operates from a large porta cabin situated on the site of the old blacksmith’s shop and is leased and run by Ardfern Yacht Centre. The Chandlery, opened in Easter 2011, sells yachting and equine clothing as well as yachting equipment. Tarbert is the host of the 2nd biggest sailing event in the UK. The ‘Scottish Series’, which this year will be held at the beginning of June for four days and brings in approx. 200 visiting yachts to the village. The Series is only one of many events held in Tarbert throughout the season (see Things to do in Tarbert and surrounding area – Page 24). For further information on what to do and see around Tarbert and Mid Argyll it is worth looking at the websites www.midargyllkintyrenews.wordpress.com, www.tarbert.info, www.tarbertlochfyne.co.uk, www.heartofargyll.com. The Fish Quay at the opposite side of the Harbour from the Marina is where Tarbert’s small fishing fleet berths overnight. High quality fresh fish and shellfish are landed daily. Most of what isn’t used by the local restaurants is destined for markets in Spain and France. Many of the local hotels and restaurants serve the local seafood and other local produce such as beef and venison. Around the harbour there are also smaller cafe’s and fast food outlets serving food all day to eat in or take away. 9

Out & About – By Land For those visitors who wish to stretch their sea legs ashore and explore further afield there are good bus and ferry services within easy reach of Tarbert. Timetables for the ferries (to the Cowal Peninsula, Islay, Arran and Gigha) and buses can be obtained from the Harbour Office or Tourist Information Centre. Well worth a visit is the Crinan Canal, one of Scotland’s most picturesque waterways. The area is steeped in history, a designated wildlife reserve and boasts miles of forest walks and cycle ways. The canal meanders from Ardrishaig on Loch Fyne to Crinan, so why not hire a cycle at Ardrishaig and explore the area in your own time. Campbeltown, popularly known as ‘The Wee Toon’ is the largest settlement in Kintyre and home to the oldest operating cinema in the country. Close to Campbeltown, located in the small village of Machrihanish on the western side of the Kintyre Peninsula, you will find two championship golf courses – reputed to be two of the best courses in the country – and a must visit for the keen golfer. A little further afield is Inveraray. This 18th century picturesque royal burgh sits on the shores of Loch Fyne, with many interesting shops, including an old style pharmacy and ‘Loch Fyne Whiskies’. Why not visit the old Inveraray Jail, now a popular tourist attraction or take in a visit to Inveraray Castle and gardens, seat of the Duke of Argyll, Chief of the Clan Campbell.

10

Out & About – By Sea For those visitors who prefer to stay with their boats, there are equally as many interesting and accessible places.

Day sails Otter Ferry located on the East Shore of Loch Fyne, just north of Otter Spit is one such place. Here you can enjoy a leisurely drink, lunch or evening meal at the pub and restaurant right on the beach, with access to a pontoon by tender or small boat at all states of the tide. Lochgair offers a sheltered anchorage and hotel. Lochranza at the northern tip of Arran in Kilbrannan Sound has visitor moorings and a landing stage with tearooms, hotel, golf club, whisky distillery and ancient castle. Portavadie, on the Eastern side of Loch Fyne, across the loch from Tarbert, provides a marina with bar and restaurant.

Overnight sails Locations such as: Carradale, Campbeltown, Whiting Bay, Brodick (Arran), Lamlash (Arran), Rothesay, Largs, Millport, Kyles of Bute, Kames, Tighnabruaich, Loch Ridden, Colintraive, the upper reaches of the Firth of Clyde and the upper reaches of Loch Fyne itself.

The Harbour Authority Tarbert (Loch Fyne) Harbour Authority is a Trust Port established by Act of Parliament in 1912. It is an independent statutory body governed by its own legislation and guided by Government Code of Practice. The Governance of the Authority is undertaken by a Board of eight Trustees, four of whom are elected by the local community, three by appointment with the eighth member being the Port Manager and Harbour Master.

It is a not for profit making organisation recognised as a Social Enterprise. The Authority is like any other self-financing business dependent on cash flow and profits for its successful operation. All profits or surpluses are reinvested to ensure that the facilities and infra structure are properly maintained and improved for the benefit of its users. The Authority also works closely with the local community supporting local events and providing stakeholder benefits through leisure and amenity improvements.

Future Improvements Additional Berthing Facilities: In Early 2012 Tarbert Harbour was delighted to announce that it had been successful in a funding application to the Scottish Government’s Six Million Pound Enterprise Growth Fund. The Enterprise Growth Fund was managed and administered by the Wise Group in partnership with Community Enterprise in Scotland (CEiS), Developing Strathclyde Limited (DSL) and the Social Value Lab.

The Grant was a great boost to the Harbour’s plans for providing the necessary facilities for the leisure industry. In providing these facilities the scheme will not only allow the business to grow but it will become more sustainable due to the improved facilities ensuring that existing customers continue to use them and more bertholders are attracted. This will hopefully lead to an increased number of visitors to the village.

Tarbert Harbour was awarded funding of ÂŁ200,000 to help provide an additional 40 berths.
