Dear Visitor, A VERY WARM welcome to you, if you are a new visitor we hope you enjoy your stay and sincerely thank you for choosing Tarbert Harbour, and if you are a returning visitor welcome back! We hope you enjoy your stay just as much as last time. Tarbert Harbour is one of Scotland’s most beautiful naturally sheltered harbours situated at the heart of a traditional heritage fishing village. The leisure pontoons are situated on the north side of the harbour alongside the Fish Quay on the south. The Fish Quay remains a busy area of the harbour with an average of 30 or so local fishing boats, continuing to land fresh catches daily. Tarbert is a natural larder which generates quality produce and is famous for its scallops, prawns, lobster, crab, and salmon. Fresh seafood can be purchased from local merchants, and if you don’t feel like cooking local produce is served in the restaurants, cafes and hotels. 2015 is Scotland’s year of Food & Drink, so the perfect excuse to come and sample our fresh produce.

4

The leisure pontoons on the north side of the harbour boasts 160 finger berths, 600 metres of parallel pontoon berthing, and frequently has up to 120 visiting vessels of varying sizes. Fresh water and electricity are available on the pontoons, as well as free wifi and access to a laundry facility plus 24 hour shower and toilet block. The Harbour is a natural amphitheatre and a safe environment for families, our large unique recreation area is perfect for musters and social gatherings. In 2014, thanks to grant funding from ‘Entrust Landfill Communities Fund’, we were able to cover the recreation area with soft attractive astro turf and with the help of further funding, through the ‘Big Lottery Fund – Awards For All’, a new community marquee was provided for use during the summer months for musters etc. The laying of the astro turf has created a more attractive and user friendly area and a pedestrian walkway guides you safely from the pontoons directly into the village. Tarbert plays host to a good number of festivals throughout the year, most of which are organised by enthusiastic and

dedicated volunteers from the village. This book provides information on all the festivals; you can also enquire at the Tourist Information Centre along the front on Harbour Street. The Harbour staff and Board of Trustees continually strive with progressing Harbour facilities to meet our customers’ needs. We would really appreciate if you could take the time to fill out our comment card, and post it in the box provided as your thoughts and comments are vital to our progression and service. Plans have been drawn for new facilities including reception & heritage centre, laundry, toilets and shower block. We are currently in the process of working to secure planning and funding and it is hoped this project will come to a successful conclusion in the not too distant future. Please be assured we will do our very best to make your visit a comfortable one and to meet your service expectations. Please accept our welcome pack filled with useful information relating to the village and surrounding area. We hope this 2015 Yearbook provides you with helpful information and we wish you a very enjoyable sailing season.

You may wish to consider making Tarbert Harbour your home port, please do not hesitate to approach our friendly staff to enquire. Berths are available and in your welcome pack you will find information on pricing and a price comparison sheet along with a berthing application form. You can also check out our website for more information. For news updates and competitions please like and share our facebook page and if you wish to receive our quarterly news letter you can sign up on our website www.tarbertharbour.co.uk Tarbert is the perfect location to be based for exploring West Coast waters, the Kyles and Argyll’s Secret Coast. Approaching Tarbert by sea Once past Cock Island the visitor’s leg of pontoons known as Leg A will be visible, you can make for these but leave the green buoy (VQ.G) to starboard. Visitor leg A can accommodate boats up to 12mtrs, if your vessel is larger please radio VHF Ch 14 or call 01880 820 344 to be berthed.

Please Radio VHF Ch14 Prior to Berthing East Loch Tarbert lies on the western side of Loch Fyne, which is situated to the north of the Isle of Arran. The entrance to the East Loch Tarbert is both wide and clear. In the closer approaches Madadh Maol, a drying reef extending northwards from the southern shore of the loch, needs to be left well off on the port side.

An alternative route to the north of Cock Island and the drying reefs and rocks of Sgeir Bhuidhe seen on the charts provided for those intrepid enough to try it.

Its extremity is marked by a red light column (FL.R.2.5s), vessels should not pass close to the light structure, and there is plenty of deep water to the north of it.

Approaching Tarbert by land From Glasgow follow the M8 through Glasgow, over the Kingston Bridge, and turn off at J30 for the Erskine Bridge. Cross the bridge and follow the A82 through Dumbarton and up the side of Loch Lomond heading through Arrochar. Pick up the A83 and follow signs for Campbeltown. Travel through Inveraray, Lochgilphead, Ardrishaig and eventually in to Tarbert.

Starting from a point around 100m north of the Madadh Maol light beacon a south westerly course goes through the main channel south of the Eilean a ‘Choic (Cock Island). This channel is less than 100m wide. Reefs projecting from the south of Cock Island are marked by a green light post (Q.G), which should be kept to starboard.

Out and about in the local area TARBERT IS A small fishing village situated on the west coast of Loch Fyne, a real yachtman’s paradise. The ‘safe harbour’ is ideally situated to base your vessel for some sheltered day sails further up Loch Fyne or down to Arran or to the Kyles of Bute (see page 13), and is a popular stopping off point for vessels heading out to the Western Isles through the Crinan Canal. The friendly fishing village offers a welcoming atmosphere and is a picturesque spot from which to enjoy all that the local area has to offer. The village offers excellent food and drink in its many friendly hotels and restaurants, as well as a fine selection of retail outlets – galleries, a supermarket, a butcher, a fish merchant, a delicatessen, a larder, a post office, hardware stores, chandlery, hairdressers, a beautician, a physiotherapist, an osteopath, a masseuse and a pharmacy. There is also a health centre, an optician and a dentist. Many of the local hotels and restaurants serve fresh local seafood and other local produce, such as beef and venison. Around the harbour there are also smaller cafe’s and fast food outlets serving light snacks, both for sitting in and taking away. The easy ten minute walkway linking the pontoons to the town centre is extremely popular with both locals and visitors alike, including small children and the less able, thus allowing foot traffic to move safely and then on to other parts of the village. The Harbour amenity area adjacent to the walkway continues to evolve – shade sails and picnic benches, an outdoor gym,

10

barbecues, table tennis and a boules playing area are for welcome use. A soft attractive artificial grassed area was laid in 2014 creating a more user friendly area, and a community seasonal marquee is erected and used throughout the summer by Tarbert Youth Group and for musters and social gatherings. The fish quay at the opposite side of the Harbour from the pontoons is where Tarbert’s fishing fleet berths overnight and is well worth a look. High quality fresh fish and shellfish are landed daily. Most of what is not used by the local restaurants is destined for markets throughout the UK, Spain and France. Overlooking the village, on the southern shore of the bay, are the carefully presented remains of Tarbert Castle, a monument of national importance because of the major role Robert the Bruce played in its reinforcement and enlargement c. 1325. The castle site is cared for by ‘Tarbert Castle Trust’ a community based organisation who protect and care for the expanding educational potential. It is fully accessible to visitors, offering new historical information and interpretation panels, as well as stunning views across the harbour and out to Loch Fyne. In addition there is a newly created man made pond with extra seating areas for a tranquil retreat. The Castle is also a superb site for photography, an enjoyable visit with picnic areas for the family. In the evening the floodlit castle is a striking and iconic feature of the village. Adjacent to the castle are Forestry Commission walks, known as ‘Corranbuie walks’, with viewpoints looking down to Bute and the Heads of Ayr, the Cowal Hills, Mid Argyll and on the

Ben Cruachan. There are many short walks, with the white shore on the north side of the harbour being a particularly popular destination, accessed through a forest trail, leading to a bird hide, then on to the shore itself. Another popular route takes the walker around the harbour, past the fish quay and on to the slipway for the Tarbert to Portavadie ferry, while a little further on is the East Pier, excellent for fishing mackerel and a little further shell beach, a beach composed entirely of scallop shells.

Castle Walks, Corranbuie, Skipness, White Shore, Shell Beach.

The more energetic walker can take the bus to Skipness and return over the hills via the initial section of the Kintyre Way. Pamphlets are available from the Harbour Office or the local Tourist Office.

Activities Tarbert: Harbour amenity area outdoor gym facilities, table tennis, and boules. Yoga, Exercise to music, Zumba and a range of other classes held locally. (Ask for details)

Tarbert also offers other activities, a well maintained nine hole golf course, bowling green, charter boats for diving, sea fishing from the East Pier. Perhaps you would like to take a seasonal Rib tours or try your hand at kayaking, wind surfing or rowing a skiff.

Out and about on land FOR THOSE VISITORS wishing to head further afield than Tarbert itself there are good bus links and ferry services within easy reach. Ferries to Arran, the Cowal Peninsula, Gigha, Islay, Jura, and Colonsay can all be accessed locally, with timetables available from the harbour or tourist office. The Crinan Canal, one of the country’s most picturesque waterways is well worth a visit. The canal and the surrounding area is steeped in history and is a designated wildlife reserve as well as boasting miles of forest walks and cycle paths. Beginning at Ardrishaig some 10 miles to the north, the canal meanders on to Crinan, at the western edge of Argyll. Bicycles are available to hire in Lochgilphead from Crinan Cycles, and at just 9 miles in length the canal is a comfortable cycle for all the family. This year sees the return of assisted passage if you’re thinking of taking your boat up through the canal (Recommend phoning the Ardrishaig office in advance). Campbeltown, the largest settlement in Kintyre, popularly known as ‘the Wee Toon’, it is located some 30 miles south of Tarbert and is home to the oldest operating cinema in the country. Near Campbeltown, in the small village of Machrihanish, two championship golf courses can be found – regularly hailed as two of the best in the country – and as such this is a must destination for any visiting golfer. As you are heading to Campbeltown recommended stop off points are ‘Point Sands Beach’ and ‘West Port Beach’, miles of golden sand sheltered by massive sand dunes on one side and an emerald green Atlantic sea on the other presents the stunning ‘Mull of Kintyre’. A little further afield, this time to the north, is the royal burgh of Inveraray. Sitting on the northern shores of Loch Fyne, the town boasts a number of interesting shops, notable among which are a traditional pharmacy, old world sweet shop and Loch Fyne Whiskies. Inveraray Jail, where life in a 19th century prison is portrayed, is well worth a visit, as is Inveraray Castle, the seat of the Duke of Argyll, Chief of the Clan Campbell. Nature in the local area TARBERT IS AN excellent site to use as a base for wildlife watching. Situated on the east shore of Loch Fyne it provides the naturist, both amateur and professional, with a safe, sheltered spot that is used by a variety of marine life, mammals and birds, in both fair and not so fair weather.

Marine life Many species of fish can be seen in and around the harbour area, particularly at high water. Mackerel are present throughout the year, with the numbers being particularly high in the summer months. Shoals of large mullet enter the harbour during the summer and travel around the shallow waters. They are easily visible from the new walkway or the pontoons outside the harbour office. Of particular interest are the basking sharks, which are visible at the mouth of the harbour. Numbers of basking shark are on the rise after many years of decline and it is hoped that this rise will continue and many more will be visible along the coastline in the near future. Mussels, crabs and sea urchins are also prevalent in the harbour, evidenced by the large number of shells and crab remains to be found on the pontoons and harbour wall each morning. Reported sightings of rare Puffins up Loch Fyne, last year by Ocean Breeze Ribs tours delivers exiting news for the area.

14

Mammals During the summer months pods of dolphins can be seen from the mouth of the harbour. Although infrequent they can be very entertaining and are a unique and welcome sight. Porpoises are a more frequent sight and are also more likely to actually enter the harbour area and can be seen often, particularly when they are on the hunt for mackerel! Also sighted have been otters and seals, if you catch a sighting be sure to snap a photo and share on the Tarbert Harbour facebook.

Birds Tarbert is also well known for its birdlife. A pair of mute swans has been known to hatch as many as nine cygnets in their nest on Eilan a’choic (Cock Island). Most years, however, they confine themselves to five or six. The swans are most frequently seen at the small slipway area near the Co-Op corner of the village. During the winter months small flocks of little grebe can occasionally be seen, although they are very shy, small birds and tend to stay under the water for quite some time. Oyster catchers, Redshank and Eider are also commonly seen in the harbour area. Of particular interest is the black guillemot, locally known as ‘dookers’, giving the locals their nickname, historically due to a soup being made from these birds in the winter, a local delicacy which is no longer eaten. An information placard on all species can be found at the very end of East Pier road heading to shell beach.

There is also a sizeable population of very rare mining wasps to be found on the castle pathway. To spot these the visitor should look for little 1cm mounds on the path from around May onwards. A short drive to the north, in the Knapdale forest, is the site of the first controlled reintroduction of the beaver to Scotland. The Scottish Beaver Trial introduced 12 beavers in 2009 and they have already made a major impact on the local habitat. Guided walks run throughout the summer and it is well worth booking a place. For more information visit www.scottishbeaver.org

Away from the Harbour The hills all around Tarbert are populated by families of roe, red and sika deer, and hybrids thereof, which can easily be seen during morning and evening walks. The hills to the south boast healthy populations of black grouse and one of the most successful pairs of golden eagles in the country.

Boat Guidance Notes Mooring Lines & Fendering:

Cleats and Fairleads:

The most common reasons for mooring failure are as a result of chafe to mooring lines and a failure of the mooring point.

Fairleads and cleats should be checked to ensure that they are strong enough for the task in hand.

Check that there are no sharp edges which may prompt the chafing of lines.

To prevent chafing we would recommend that chafe protectors are fitted to those lines which may be

• •

• • •

Where possible good quality, multi-plait rope should be used for the mooring of vessels. We would ask that you do not use old halyards or sheets for mooring lines and never use polypropolene rope as this have very poor holding strength. It may be necessary at some stage to place additional lines on your boat; accordingly 2 spare mooring lines of suitable length and diameter for your boat should be kept in an accessible place for marina to use. Fenders should be secured to a strong point on the boats and attached using at least 8mm multi-plait rope or similar. We would recommend the use of the cylindrical style of fender (as opposed to the round type) as these offer better protection in a marina environment. The Harbour Management would kindly ask boat owners not to fix additional fendering to the pontoon structure. Should you wish to attach a bow/stern fender to your berth, please speak to the Harbour Master.

susceptible to chafe and that lines are inspected regularly. THANKING YOU FOR YOUR KIND ASSISTANCE TARBERT HARBOUR MASTER Donald McAllister.

Please note that although we carry out daily checks of boats moored in the Harbour, we cannot accept responsibility for any damage resulting from inadequate mooring/rope preparation.

A community floats convoy parade travels up and down Harbour Street with each float representing a different theme. Each shop window has a decorated theme, (see if you can guess them?). THE VIKING FESTIVAL June – Saturday 27th / Sunday 28th

TRADITIONAL BOAT FESTIVAL July – Friday 17th / Sunday 19th

Building on last year’s success, The Viking Festival promises to return bigger and better than before, so bring your costume! Last year the festival was featured on BBC 1 television and many print journalists covered the journey of the festival in newspapers and social media. This festival replicates the historic steps of Magnus Barefoot 1093. Last year a Viking longship was hand crafted by one of our Trustees and a number of helpers, and this was carried in procession from West Loch to East loch Tarbert. There will be re-enactments, skirmishes, stalls, music and fireworks to make sure it goes off with a bang. This festival will raid several villages up and down Loch Fyne, but you can be sure that the local community and businesses in Tarbert will make it an event you won’t forget or want to miss.

Over 40 ‘Traditional Boats’, from all over the UK are expected to come and visit Tarbert for the 4th Traditional Boat Festival. This coincides with a free community barbeque and music organised on the shore side recreation area and marquee. A fun weekend packed with Traditional boats decorated with flags and boat history placards for you to read, as well as games, music and merriment. A prize is awarded for the best decorated boat.

TARBERT SEAFOOD FESTIVAL July – Saturday 4th / Sunday 5th The Seafood Festival is organised by local people and is one of the best festivals of the year that has something for everyone, involving all age groups. Harbour Street becomes a hive of activity with stalls lining the length of

TARBERT VILLAGE RAFT RACE July – Saturday 18th This is such a fun weekend, Tarbert villagers certainly know how to make fun of themselves and this weekend is a great demonstration of the fantastic sense of humour locals possess. Villagers form together in groups, and create individual rafts in different themes adorning fancy dress as they battle it out in knock out fashion within harbour waters. Who will be the last raft standing this year? Come and see, and join in the high spirits. Music is presented in the local pubs and the atmosphere is just amazing.

TARBERT FAIR July – Wednesday 29th / Saturday 1st August Tarbert Fair is one of the oldest running Fairs operating since 1705, the Fair is a popular weekend with locals who hold dear fond memories from childhood and the Fairs links to the village. Back in the day the Fair use to be associated with the Tarbert Cattle Market and many a young Farmer would use the opportunity of the Fair to socialise and sweep a young Lady off her feet. The Cattle Market no longer resides in Tarbert but the Fair still comes every year with its rides along Harbour street and the fish quay, evoking old memories and creating new ones for the youngsters today.

TARBERT 5K AND 10K August – Saturday 15th This event has been running only for a few years but credit to the local ladies who organize it has become a huge success. Tarbert Harbour sponsors the race along with many other local businesses. The route for both races cuts along the harbour pedestrian walkway, and down through Harbour Street. This is a good opportunity to set yourself a fitness goal as the race is open to anyone. For more information on how to enter check out the Tarbert 5K and 10K facebook page.

TARBERT MUSIC FESTIVAL September – Friday 18th/Sunday 20th The Music Festival is also organised by locals and remains the most popular Tarbert Festival on the calendar, attracting tourists from all over with over 120 yachts visiting last year, as well as many other visitors from around the Argyll and Glasgow area. There is always a full programme of music, with a variety of popular bands playing in all the pubs and restaurants around the Harbour, creating a vibrant and buzzing atmosphere. There are also stalls on the Saturday and Sunday selling a variety of local produce and craftwork. Tarbert is well worth a visit this weekend! Check out the music festival facebook page for news and lists of what’s on, you can pick up a programme from local bars, shops, Tourist Office.

TARBERT BOOK FESTIVAL For those who are less party, and more bookworms, the Book Festival is a popular event for those who wish to relax and indulge in some excellent literature. Come meet famous authors, have books signed, or listen to readings from some classic and contemporary novelists. This is a weekend full of culture and an opportunity to meet likewise minds, providing something for everyone. (check website and facebook for updates).

TARBERT CHRISTMAS FAIR date to be advised

(please see website or facebook for further details)

The Tarbert Christmas Fair coincides with the switch on of the Christmas lights in Tarbert. The fair opens in the Tarbert Arts and Leisure Centre, with stalls offering local craftwork and produce, offering you the chance to buy that original Christmas present or stocking filler. Santa will be there too, so bring your kids along early to avoid disappointment. The carol singers will be around the tree on Harbour Street until the lights are switched on usually around 7.00pm. Throughout the evening there will no doubt be mulled wine, mince pies, and soup. This is a great opportunity to get the family into the festive mood to start the festive cheer.

The Waverley Paddle Steamer The last sea-going paddle steamer in the world, the Waverley visits Tarbert East Pier every summer for approx 12 trips; tickets can be purchased at the Tarbert Tourist information office for a sail up Loch Fyne. www.waverlyexcursions.co.uk For more information on all the above festivals: www.tarbertharbour.co.uk or Tarbert Harbour facebook. Tarbert Harbour Authority TARBERT (LOCH FYNE) Harbour Authority is a trust port established by an Act of Parliament in 1912. It is an independent statutory body governed by its own legislation and guided by Government Code of Practice. The governance of the Authority is undertaken by a board of eight trustees, four of whom are elected by the local community, three of whom are appointed and the eighth member is the Harbour Master and Port Manager. The Authority is a not for profit making organisation recognised as a social enterprise. The Authority is like any other self financing business dependent on cash flow and profits for its successful operation. All profits or surpluses are reinvested to ensure that the facilities and infra structure are properly maintained and improved for the benefit of its users. The Authority also works closely with the local community supporting local events and providing benefits for its stakeholders through improving the leisure facilities and amenities.
