Dear Visitor Welcome to Tarbert for the 2011 Season. I hope your visit will be an enjoyable and memorable one. Whether you are a first time visitor or regular customer we are sure you will enjoy the improved harbour infrastructure and surrounds completed in 2010. The amenity area created in 2010 continues to improve with the addition of barbecues and shade sails. Grant has been applied for to provide additional facilities in the form of outdoor gym equipment and this may well be in place by the time you visit us. The improved facilities have already borne fruit with Ardfern Yacht Centre taking the lease of a large portacabin on the site of the old Blacksmiths shop adjacent to the Harbour Office. The portacabin will be used to provide a much needed Tarbert Chandlery Outlet. All augurs well for the future and the Trustees remain determined to take the steps required to bring you better and improved shoreside facilities and to continue to build on last year’s success. We hope you will have a successful and, more importantly, enjoyable yachting season. Alan Macdonald Chairman Board of Trustees

Approach by sea
E
ast Loch Tarbert is approached by heading northwards up Lower Loch Fyne. Loch Fyne is situated to the north of the Isle of Arran and is reached by passing through Inchmarnock water.East Loch Tarbert lies on the west side of Lower Loch Fyne, opposite Portavadie on the east side. A ferry service links across Loch Fyne at this point. The initial entrance to East Loch Tarbert is wide and clear. In the closer approaches Madadh Maol, a drying reef extending northwards from the south shore of the Loch needs to be left well off on your port side. Its extremity is marked by a red light Column (FI.R.2.5s). Do not pass close to the light structure, there is plenty of deep water to the north of it.
Once past Cock Island the new pontoons will be seen.... make for these being very careful to leave a green perch beacon with a triangular topmark (VQ.G) well to starboard. This marks a drying rock lying about 80m WSW of Cock Island. Don’t make your turn to starboard too early...
Starting from a point about 100 m north of the Madadh Maol light beacon, a south westerly course will bring you through the main channel south of Eilean a ‘Choic (Cock Island). The channel is less than 100m wide.
rom Glasgow west follow the M8 through the centre of Glasgow and head towards Loch Lomond, taking the Erskine Bridge turn off before you get to Greenock. Cross the bridge and follow the A82 towards Crianlarich. Stay on the A82 and pick up the A83 travelling along the banks of Loch Lomond, signposted Inveraray and Campbeltown, continue along this road through Inveraray, Lochgilphead, Ardrishaig and finally to Tarbert (Loch Fyne).
Reefs projecting from the south of Cock Island, are marked by a green light post (Q.G), which needs to be left to starboard.
An alternative route to the north of Cock Island and the drying reefs and rocks of Sgeir Bhuidhe will be seen on the charts provided for those intrepid enough to try it.

Out and About - Local Area
Tarbert T
arbert is a small fishing village on the West Coast of Loch Fyne and is ideally based for taking a few days to enjoy the local area or to take some sheltered day sails further up Loch Fyne or down to Arran or the Kyles of Bute. It may even be worthwhile considering basing your boat here. This would allow you to enjoy the friendly atmosphere of the local hostelries, mild climate and sailing in some of the best waters in the Country all year round.
8
Tarbert is a yachtsman’s paradise with a ‘safe harbour’, good food and drink with many welcoming hotels and restaurants. It also boasts a fine selection of retail outlets, Galleries, Supermarket and a Post Office. It is a popular stopping off point for boats heading out to the west coast through the Crinan Canal.
Overlooking Tarbert are the remains of Robert the Bruce’s castle, which is well worth a visit; even if only to see the feral sheep, used to keep the grass under control. Adjacent to the castle are Forestry Commission walks with viewpoints looking down to Bute and the Heads of Ayr, the Cowal Hills, Mid Argyll and on to Ben Cruhacan. From the heart of the village you will find many short walks. The White Shore on the north side of the harbour is popular with a forest trail leading to a bird hide and the secluded bay of the White Shore itself. A stroll around the harbour, past the fish quay and on to the slipway for the Tarbert – Portavadie ferry where just a little bit further on is the ‘Shell Beach’ a beach composed entirely of scallop shells. When out and about around the harbour you will find many interesting Interpretation Boards with useful information detailing other interesting walks, the history of Tarbert, its Fishing Industry, the White Shore, Harbour Bird Life and much more For the more energetic walker, why not take the bus to Skipness and return over the hills via the first section of the Kintyre Way (Pamphlets available from the Harbour Office or local Tourist Office).

I
f after all this you still have some spare time Tarbert has a well maintained 9 hole golf course, charter boats for diving, sea fishing from the East Pier and rocks, some quiet bays and picnic areas. The new harbour footway linking the pontoons to the town centre has proven to be extremely popular with locals and visitors alike. The walkway was officially opened on 7th June 2010 by Alex Neil MSP, Minister for Housing and Communities. The walkway allows visitors to move safely from the pontoons to the town centre and other parts of the harbour and on to the Castle, which itself received a £3/4 million Grant in 2010 and is now undergoing the second of three annual stages of stonework consolidation.
10
© Tarbert Harbour 2011
The new harbour amenity area adjacent to the walkway provides seating and picnic tables. 2011 has seen the addition of shade sail and further improvements are planned in the very near future including an outside gym area, barbecues and Boules playing area. Another welcome addition to the harbour facilities is the ‘Tarbert Chandlery’, which operates from a large portacabin situated on the site of the old blacksmith’s shop and is leased and run by Ardfern Yacht Centre. The Chandlery, opened in Easter 2011, sells yachting and equine clothing as well as yachting equipment.

Tarbert is the host of the 2nd biggest sailing event in the UK. The ‘Scottish Series’, which is held at the end of May each year for four days and brings in approx. 200 visiting yachts to the village. The Series is only one of many events held in Tarbert throughout the season (see Things to do in Tarbert and surrounding area – Page 24). For further information on what to do and see around Tarbert and Mid Argyll it is worth looking at the new website www.midargyllkintyrenews. wordpress.com.

The Fish Quay at the opposite side of the Harbour from the Marina is where Tarbert’s small fishing fleet berths overnight. High quality fresh fish and shellfish are landed daily. Most of what isn’t used by the local restaurants is destined for markets in Spain and France. Many of the hotels and restaurants serve the local seafood and other local produce such as beef and venison. Around the harbour there are also smaller cafe’s and fast food outlets serving food all day to eat in or take away.

Out and About - Wider Area
By Land F
or those visitors who wish to stretch their sea legs ashore and explore further afield there are good bus and ferry services within easy reach of Tarbert. Timetables for the ferries (to the Cowal Peninsula, Islay, Arran and Gigha) and buses can be obtained from the Harbour Office or Tourist Information Centre. Well worth a visit is the Crinan Canal, one of Scotland’s most picturesque waterways. The area is steeped in history, a designated wildlife reserve and boasts miles of forest walks and
12
cycle ways. The canal meanders from Ardrishaig on Loch Fyne to Crinan, so why not hire a cycle at Ardrishaig and explore the area in your own time. Campbeltown, popularly known as ‘The Wee Toon’ is the largest settlement in Kintyre and home to the oldest operating cinema in the country. Close to Campbeltown, located in the small village of Machrihanish on the western side of the Kintyre Peninsula, you will find two championship golf courses – reputed to be two of the best courses in the
country – and a must visit for the keen golfer. A little further afield is Inveraray. This 18th century picturesque royal burgh sits on the shores of Loch Fyne, with many interesting shops, including an old style pharmacy and ‘Loch Fyne Whiskies’. Why not visit the old Inveraray Jail, now a popular tourist attraction or take in a visit to Inveraray Castle and gardens, seat of the Duke of Argyll, Chief of the Clan Campbell.
By Sea F
or those visitors who prefer to stay with their boats, there are equally as many interesting and accessible places.

Otter Ferry located on the East Shore of Loch Fyne, just north of Otter Spit is one such place. Here you can enjoy a leisurely drink, lunch or evening meal at the pub and restaurant right on the beach, with access to a pontoon by tender or small boat at all states of the tide.
Basing your boat in Tarbert, even for a few days, affords you the opportunity to take an overnight sail to the many interesting and scenic locations the area has to offer:
Lochgair offers a sheltered anchorage and hotel. Lochranza at the northern tip of Arran in Kilbrannan Sound has visitor moorings and a landing stage with tearooms, hotel, golf club, whisky distillery and ancient castle.
Locations such as: Carradale, Campbeltown, Whiting Bay, Brodick (Arran), Lamlash (Arran), Rothesay, Largs, Millport, Kyles of Bute, Kames, Tighnabruaich, Loch Ridden, Colintraive, the upper reaches of the Firth of Clyde and the upper reaches of Loch Fyne itself.

Future Improvements: The design of additional shoreside facilities continues to progress and after last year’s consultation the Board have continued to discuss and develop the more favoured modern design with the Architects and Argyll and Bute Council Planners. The present financial climate however, may see the need for a reassessment of the design
to reduce rental levels to more marketable values. Market research will take place over the next few months to identify what is best included in the development and it is hoped that progress will be made in the not too distant future.
