The West End Festival 2015 Highlights Live at Kelvingrove Bandstand @ Kelvingrove Bandstand As the famous parade makes its way into the park, the bandstand will be ready to follow up proceedings and keep the celebration flowing. Taking to the stand will be musicians and community groups associated with the parade and the festival as a whole. A day of coming together for everyone involved in these events. MONDAY 8TH JUNE 8:30pm – Bright Club Science Festival Special @ The Stand It’s not very common to spend a Monday night going to see a scientist using their intellect to make a set for stand-up comedy. The Stand has taken this and ran with it as they put on a night for both the West End Festival and the Glasgow Science Festival by putting on six funny scientists to make you laugh. It’s only £5 for those who think they can follow the punchlines.

SUNDAY 21ST JUNE Glasgow Buddhist Centre presents: Meditate in the Botanics @ Botanic Gardens If you are looking for a bit more Zen within the festival this year then join the free meditation session taking place in the Botanic Gardens being taken by the Glasgow Buddhist Centre. A perfect way to relieve that stress and become more spiritual. THURSDAY 25TH JUNE 6:30pm – Glasgow’s Undergrounds @ Hillhead Library A fascinating look into where the city started to get the transport ideas that we see today in our Glasgow Underground. There is a lot more to the current system and there were in fact older undergrounds being used in Glasgow in the past. TV and Radio Presenter Colin Mackay will host a talk dedicated to these exact facts in the Hillhead Library.

The Oran Mor All-Dayer is back for it’s fourth year There is soon to be some serious hustle and bustle in venues and businesses all over the west end as the 20th annual West End Festival kicks off on the 5 June, and few places will be busier than Byres Road favourite Oran Mor. The ever-popular pub and gig venue will be hosting a series of acts throughout the festival, including their All-Dayer, now in its fourth year. The event is hosting 14 Scottish bands and musicians under one roof and across three stages, including the intimate gig space in the basement and the impressive upstairs. Notable acts will include Scottish Album of the Year Award winners Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat and RM Hubbert, the former performing material from their new album The Most Important Place in the World live for the first time and the latter returning after a well-received set at the first AllDayer. We Were Promised Jetpacks, who performed during the Oran Mor’s 10th Birthday celebrations last June, are back after an extensive world tour to perform a special strippedback set. There is something for everyone on the programme, with just about every box ticked on a long list of genres and often an eclectic mix of several in one act. “Psychadelia”, as the event page describes it, is well represented by Man of Moon, a new two-man band recently featured in NME’s “Buzz Band of the Week”, and by Remember Remember, whose

appearance will be “the last chance people get to see them for the foreseeable future.” Tuff Love will also be performing, whose effortlessly cool tunes are described by their record label as “fuzzed up grunge-pop goodness.” More new acts get a look-in, with the soulful, ethereal vocal stylings of Kathryn Joseph and new Glasgow band ULTRAS. Bluegrass fans will enjoy central Scotland outfit The Dirty Beggars, and for something else a little different check out Yusuf Azak’s own singular brand of folk-pop. There’s never a dull moment

at the Oran Mor All-Dayer so whichever stage you’re at, there’s sure to be a big crowd and an electric atmosphere. Let’s Review: The Ball Room Glasgow

The Southside’s Hidden Gem

THE BALL ROOM GLASGOW Walking into The Ball Room feels almost like stepping into an American style diner, complete with a huge jukebox, cosy booths and massive portions of food. However, when you start to explore the expansive building, you’ll find it offers so much more than just food and drink – there’s plenty of things to do to keep you busy, whether you’re into pool, snooker, darts or even if you’re just looking for somewhere to watch the big game, the 10ft HD screen shows different sporting events every night. For most people, the mere mention of a pool and snooker hall reminds them of dark, dingy buildings, full of older men drinking pints, but The Ball Room couldn’t be further from this. I walked in on a Tuesday afternoon with one of my best friends who thought that it felt like a student union and it’s easy to imagine groups of students in playing pool or having a quick game of table tennis (which is being introduced in the next few weeks) whilst munching on a pizza and drinking

pints. If we had been students at Glasgow Clyde College, which is a two minute walk from The Ball Room, we would have likely ate lunch there every day – especially considering how cheap our meals were. I went for the chicken nachos platter, which was easily the largest plate of nachos I’ve ever seen in my life, with the lovely addition of thin strips of chicken. It’s easy to imagine how well these would go down if shared by a group of friends, watching a big game after an hour of pool and some darts. My friend went for the grilled chicken wrap and onion rings and was also amazed at the portion size, insisting I tuck into the onion rings and help her out. We ordered from the ‘two for £10’ menu and it really is excellent value for money. However, students can save even more at The Ball Room if they sign up for the student loyalty card which is £8 for the year and entitles them to exclusive discounts, including 25% off table rates before 6pm.

The Ball Room’s menu is expansive, offering something for everyone and something for the brave – such as the £11.95 ‘Man Vs Burger’ challenge, which includes three 4oz burgers in the bun, two slices of unsmoked bacon and triple cheese, plus a cone of chips and onion rings, and anyone who manages to tackle the challenge and finish it all will come away with their own certificate. Unfortunately we didn’t have time for a game of pool but the bar is keen to appeal more to female customers and offers exclusive deals for women such as two hours of pool for just £5, all day every day. For those in the Southside, The Ball Room could be the perfect place to pre-drink before heading into town, we left feeling jealous that there is nowhere like it close to our town as it has a fun, casual atmosphere and something every student appreciates – really low prices, great grub and value for money.

Glasgow Jazz Festival

is back to mark it’s 29th year In 1987, Glasgow was bidding for the title of European City of Culture. Looking at the other countries throughout Europe that were also competing, it was noticed that most of them hosted a yearly jazz festival. Not to be outdone, the Glasgow Jazz Festival was founded. The festival quickly attracted international attention and has been graced by the presence of enormous stars like Miles Davis and Buddy Guy. Having celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2011, this year’s festival will mark a full 29 years since it all began.

Taking place in a variety of different venues across Scotland’s largest city between 24 and 28 June, the festival will see a very wide range of musicians taking to the stage to celebrate one of the world’s most exciting and intriguing musical genres. While larger venues like the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall will be utilised, less obvious establishments like Sub Club and even Central Station will be hosting live performances throughout the festival. With so many different performers appearing across these four busy days, it’s hard to know who to try and

squeeze in. There are a few artists who really stand out though. For example, The Vampires will be appearing at The Rio Club with their unique cocktail of jazz, reggae, afrobeat and balkan rhythms – just one of the many excellent acts that’ll be stopping by that particular venue. Elsewhere, the son of Frank Sinatra will be performing at the Royal Concert Hall, while a number of different swing bands can be found filling the Ramshorn Theatre on Saturday the 27th. That particular show, featuring four different bands, is just one of the many occasions during the festival that young people will be performing. The participation of so many talented youngsters during this year’s festivities really sets the Glasgow Jazz Festival apart from similar events elsewhere, and adds to its status as one of the highlights of the city’s busy calendar.

Follow your plants on twitter A plant system that tweets its owner when in need of watering or additional sunlight has been developed by three students at Glasgow Caledonian University. Third-year BEng Computer and Electronic Systems Engineering students Greg Larkin, Kieran Small and Scott Cairns had to design something ‘useful or helpful to people in the home’ as part of a programme project. They settled on a system that uses sensors to monitor and maintain ideal conditions for plants. Greg said: “We thought about what happens to house plants when the owner goes on holiday, or even if they’re busy at work. A lot of plants just don’t get watered or they wilt in the shade.” The system prototype houses the plant or plants in a wooden unit, which also contains water storage, a multi-spectrum light and a webcam. Sensors then tell the system when action needs to be taken. If action is taken out, then the user will be tweeted to let them know what’s happening. Three pictures a day are taken using the prototypes webcam and the images are posted to twitter – the students say the idea behind this is a time-lapse from bulb to fully grown plant. It is hoped that the system will become versatile enough to be tailored to an individual’s needs. Greg said: “The idea is that the system is scalable. You don’t need to have all of the components, or even the unit itself. You could, for example, just have the sensors in an ordinary house-plant pot, which will tweet you when it needs watering or more sunlight, and the owner can take the action themselves.

“We even aim to develop soil pH sensors that you can put in your garden plants. It all depends on the level of support you need.” The trio are now looking to harness any opportunities their invention may create. Kieran said: “Over the summer, our plan is to look at the possibilities of manufacturing and marketing the product. Ultimately, we want to develop an app for the system, so that multiple plants can be managed from the one account.”

What’s On VOLUNTEERING FILM

Glasgow Caledonian University student Rhiannon Walsh, from County Wicklow in the Republic of Ireland, will travel to Zimbabwe this summer to make a film about volunteering at a wildlife orphanage. She’ll be making the journey with the support of a Magnusson Award – presented annually to eight students in honour of the university’s late chancellor, the well known journalist and broadcaster, Magnus Magnusson KBE. The documentary will highlight the atrocities by poachers and raise awareness of this problem and act as an educational tool on the positive efforts being made with veterinary work, rehabilitation and wildlife surveys for the betterment of animals.

James Watt Invention Anniversary

Glasgow Caledonian University and communications technology company Stream Technologies are collaborating on research to develop a self-powering sensor interface for low power radio devices, such as environmental and power sensors, eliminating the need to charge batteries. Glasgow-based company Stream Technologies specialises in software management for pre-designed connectivity networks but sees a new business opportunity for a Radio-Frequency Identification (RF) energy harvesting solution for implementation in low power wireless sensors.

PHONETICS BREAKTHROUGH

The University of Glasgow is celebrating the 250th anniversary of James Watt’s world-changing invention with a series of events at the Glasgow Science Festival. In May 1765, James Watt was struck with the inspiration for the separate steam condenser. His idea greatly improved the efficiency of steam engines, helping to kickstart the industrial revolution and change the course of history. Professor Colin McInnes, the James Watt Chair, Professor of Engineering Science in the University’s School of Engineering, will be giving a lecture, titled ‘Reclaiming the Human Future: Energy, Engineering and Ideas of Progress’, at the University’s Sir Charles Wilson

Building on Thursday 4th June between 6pm and 7pm. Professor McInnes will explore how we can stretch our ideas in Engineering Science, learning from our common past and looking to the deep future across topics as diverse as energy, climate and space. The ‘Celebrating James Watt: The Invention that Changed the World’ conference will take place on Friday 5th June at the University Library between 10am and 4pm. Phonetics experts have completed a project to reveal the hidden workings of our tongues and vocal tracts using 1,500 ultrasound videos. The unique corpus of ultrasound videos was compiled as part of a research project looking at how speakers of different accents move their tongue and lips. Researchers on the Dynamic Dialects project, led from the University of Glasgow used Ultrasound Tongue Imaging equipment to reveal how the hidden mechanics of our lips and tongues, combine to produce the distinct accents from different speakers of English around the world. The most extensive study of its kind, the project looked at native English speakers from 48 regions and 16 different countries around the world, building up a comprehensive picture of how and why different accents of English are distinct from one another.

Formal Wear What’s on Trend Although most graduation celebration invites call for a ‘black tie’ dress code, the good news is that one of the most common trends in men’s formal wear fashion this year is ‘relaxed formal’. WHAT NEXT Top 5 Things To Do After Graduation

Year after year of academic tuition has all been for a short few moments of glory upon a grand university stage. It rotates like a school assembly but it will feel like the BAFTAs. And if you’re anything similar to what I imagine myself to be like when this situation comes around, you’ll be spending the first few months of your academic liberation looking for the perfect pair of shoes to match your gown (and ambition). With all this flustering over hairstyles, picture smiles and which two members out of your 12-strong family you’ll be giving Graduation tickets to, it’s easy to forget that beyond that final ridiculously long summer you need to have a plan sorted – a legit one. Realise that your degree is completely irrelevant to the career you wish to take now and apply for a brand new qualification. Give a little back. Why not devote a little of your summer time to making a child in a hospice smile? Very sick children are unlikely to have the same exciting experiences you did growing up, but there are charities in Scotland who are committed to ensuring poorly children enjoy their time as much as possible. The Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS) are looking for enthusiastic, friendly and committed volunteers to join their volunteer force. CHAS have opportunities all over Scotland but in Glasgow they are currently recruiting volunteers for their Byres Road shop. With full training available, you’re guaranteed to have a lot of fun whilst doing your bit for charity. Let’s Review: Hippo Beers

HIPPO BEERS Glasgow’s very own beer shop Hippo Beers, based on the west end’s Queen Margaret Drive, started life towards the end of 2012 with the aim of raising the quality of beer available in Glasgow. Founded by two old uni mates – Derek Hoy and Alec Knox – Hippo is a bottle shop with a difference. With a rotating range of well over 300 beers from all over the world, it was the first dedicated craft beer shop in the city. Two and a half years on, much has changed in the world of beer with craft beer gobbling up an increasing proportion of overall beer sales – and Glasgow is no exception. This is down to a number of factors but mainly due to the explosion of craft brewers and the general public’s increased awareness of the huge range of different beer styles that are available. Derek and Alec say they hope they have helped bring good beer into the lives of many a Glaswegian and add that they have hopefully introduced people to a wider range of beer styles, something they wish to continue doing.

As well as the shop on Queen Margaret Drive, Hippo also has an online shop serving the whole of the UK and a dedicated local delivery service within the Glasgow area. With the retail side of things ticking along nicely they are now moving into distribution and are looking to get Glasgow’s best bars stocked up with the tastiest beers out there. Not only that, Hippo also organised the first ever Great Scottish Beer Celebration in March at the Barras Art & Design Centre – a hugely successful festival featuring 18 of Scotland’s best independent breweries. So well received was the festival that Hippo are looking to stage another big beer event before the year is out, although with a different slant to it. With no signs of slowing down any time soon, Hippo Beers is determined to remain at the forefront of beer love in Glasgow for many years to come and help inject their passion for quality beer into this bustling city.

Summer has arrived with Glasgow Mela

When Glasgow was given the title of European City of Culture back in 1990, it changed the city for the better and showed that it wasn’t just the industrial city everyone thought it was but also artistic and colourful. The Glasgow Mela Festival was created to celebrate this achievement of the city and has been around every year since. Now celebrating their 25th year, the Glasgow Mela Festival is coming back to Kelvingrove Park on Sunday 14 June. To help celebrate the anniversary of this event, Glasgow Mela took their Mela On Your Doorstep event to Barmulloch Community Centre, Tramway and The Hidden Gardens earlier this year, attracting thousands of visitors to see acts including Sacred Paws, Abyinaya and Celtic Belles. Interactive dance and music lessons for visitors helped give them a taste for what is coming up at the festival. As one of Scotland’s biggest multicultural festivals, the main event will bring an astounding array of performances from all around the world. A variety of stalls and activities scattered across the park will keep all ages of the family intrigued and lose track of time throughout the day. With such a varied list of performers bringing their culture from all corners of the world you can expect to see live music, dance and performance from the likes of Jamaica and India across three different stages in the park. This year’s headliner is a very special collaboration between the Red Hot Chilli Pipers and The Dhol Foundation.

The latter being a dhol drum institute from London that specialises in playing bhangra music which is sure to perfectly combine with the better known Scottish ensemble of pipers, guitarists, keyboardists and drummers that are experts in Celtic music with a modern twist. These performances will show how rich culture is across the world and bring a wide variety of genres from classical Indian music to dub poetry and indie rock to Bollywood. Performances won’t be restricted to the stage – as well as a variety of street performers will also be making their way through the park showing their juggling, magic and stilt walking skills. Perhaps with the most mouth-watering aromas there will be catering stalls serving a variety of different national dishes, which last year included Thai, Indian, Caribbean, Mediterranean, Vietnamese, Scottish and Chinese. With such eclectic choices you might need to try a few throughout the day. A dedicated bar and tea garden will also be found for those needing to loosen up before joining in on the dancing. Vendors from across the city and beyond will be there selling a variety of different textiles, fragrances, sari’s, accessories and gifts that are sure to be exotic and beautiful like you haven’t seen before in Glasgow. Kelvingrove Park will be vibrant, colourful, unusual and redolent to bring together people of all ages for one of the best free events of the year in Glasgow.

Visitors to the city, during one of the busiest years it has ever had, constantly noted the friendliness of our citizens. As a way of celebrating that impressive title, TSA wants to encourage Glaswegians to uphold that reputation by participating in #TSASUMMEROFKINDNESS – you can easily do so by trying out one of our suggestions or with your own random act of kindness. You don’t have to spend money, you don’t even have to spend a lot of time, it’s as simple as doing something kind that might put a smile on another person’s face. •

Offer your seat on a busy train or bus – not only to elderly people or pregnant women, but to anyone.

When making your lunch, make an extra one and give it away.

Actually fill out one of those feedback forms you receive from someone who served you in a café or shop.

These are just a few options, there are hundreds of examples of random acts of kindness online and we’ll be sharing more suggestions and examples of your good deeds through our website and social media. When carrying out your kind act, it’s always a good idea to practice ‘paying it forward’ – when you do a good deed without expecting anything in return, instead the recipient of the kind deed should try and do something nice for someone else and this keeps the good karma flowing. A Sober Introduction to

GLASGOW’S GLORIOUS GARAGE Are you young? In your late teens/early twenties? Great. So, you’ve probably discovered the Garage? What was it like for you? Everyone I speak to has different opinions of their first experience. Some are happy to describe it as “the beginning of the rest of their life”, whereas other people genuinely believe it’s the worst thing they’ve encountered since hearing what Chris Martin named his children. The main thing to note here is that no-one seems to have had a mediocre experience because that would be the worst thing it could be. A night in the Garage levels out somewhere between a quiet drink with friends and a whitey-mixing fest with a bunch of people you pick up during pre-drinks. Some say it’s a bloodbath; I say it’s bloody brilliant. But, what is it like for a new party-goer? I was not always an avid Garage promoter. In fact, contrary to popular belief, there was a time in the not too distant past when I was the first of my friends to turn 18 and the only one who didn’t drink. Alas, the big day arrived around two months before I turned nineteen: I was finally going to see what this mysterious venue did to its attendees at my first 18th event in town – 110% sober. (Key mistake.) To readers who don’t derive from these parts – and are unfamiliar with all that the “people” who “make Glasgow” do for entertainment – the Garage IS NOT a concrete hollow where people go to socialise around parked cars and lawnmowers while someone’s mum bangs on the door telling them to turn the music down. The Garage is Glasgow’s biggest club. And if you skip pre-drinks before entering, it might also be Glasgow’s biggest turn off. Inundated with neon lights that gleamed in every shade of the chemical reaction scale, I remember stumbling through the front of house security checks – not only

physically impaired by my six-inch go-to’s but due to these neon lights – partially blind. As if sobering up from my single vodka half-way along Sauchiehall Street wasn’t a damper on the evening enough, before me lay the potential for a serious accident: stairs. I tried to find it within myself to feel at ease. All of this coming-of-age, laughing off overlyoptimistic shoe choices is synonymous with the Garage, right? After scaling the walls of the stairwell for balance, trying not to exert myself to prevent perspiration, the next direction veered naturally towards staying on this level – which, apparently, wasn’t an option. Spread over four floors of gradually increasing madness, the Garage looks more like a haunted mansion than the sanctuary ‘hype’ so enthusiastically mislead me to believe. As the madness of each room increased, the dignity of those inside decreased dramatically, but the energy was electrifying. However, I was here now. I paid my entry – discounted because, being a student, we like to reap every benefit the system offers our glossy, white plastic cards – and set off for the main hall which I gathered from surrounding conversations was the “place to be”… “man”. My friends and I paid to leave our jackets in the cloakroom, some of us willingly, others (me) grudging the £1.50 to borrow a solitary coat hanger from a storeroom, and set off into the jungle on level 1. I must admit, that despite all previous hostility, the Garage has continued to offer me some of the most entertaining nights of my existence. Filled to the brim with like-minded students pretending they’ve studied hard since Monday to party on Saturday, you meet a wealth of young people who are just like you and living for that all-too-short weekend. level, I should add) I left level 1 to explore the rest of the venue, genuinely not even bothered that I was a little sweatier than I was used to. So far, no run-ins, no pervy dancers and no fall outs over people dancing a little too close to our bums. I came to the conclusion I was either not doing something right or my make-up had melted off to reveal my “natural beauty”. Either way, I did not care, I wasn’t even intoxicated and I was craving the introduction to every upcoming tune. Walking downstairs, we came across a smaller room that was packed-to-the-ceiling with people grooving to the beat of S Club 7’s Bring It All Back. The Cheesy Pop Room was before us, and I regret that I cannot remember a single thing from that moment onwards. Spluttering in my own sweat – one shoe in my hand, the other under a table by the door next to my cardigan – I chaired the chants of “wan mare tune” to the DJ in residency. He had graced us with some classics over the past three hours playing, the likes of 5, 6, 7, 8, C’est La Vie, Country Roads and 500 Miles. Understandably, I – amongst others – was not prepared to allow a man of that skill slip away without one final encore of Mr Brightside. The moral of this encounter is this: don’t let stigma ruin what could be a brilliant opportunity. Clubbing is what it is: it’s sweaty conversation with people you don’t know while they fix your hair in toilets and tell you you’re still beautiful when your fake eyelashes are sliding half way down your cheeks. It’s not for everyone, I wouldn’t even say it was for me! Just avoid talking yourself out of good experiences because of what you’ve heard. That goes for everything you come across. Experiment; we’re students and we get away with it. Next stop – POLO! Heard it’s a good one for meeting your future husband. Any advice?

ZOMBIE SCHOOL How to become a zombie When someone asks if you would like to try out ‘zombie school’, say yes. Seriously, always say yes. This June, the original, biggest and most sensational urban zombie chase game in the world’ is returning to Glasgow and TSA was invited down to ‘zombie school’, the pre-chase training day for all the zombie volunteers in the game – of which there are many, around 200 to be exact in Glasgow. If you’re wondering ‘why on earth would you need

to train somehow on how to act like a zombie, you’re not alone. On my way to the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, the very public location of zombie school, I couldn’t help but wonder why on earth we were given a three hour time slot, surely you just need to groan a bit whilst dragging your right behind you? How wrong I was. I have a new found appreciation for zombies, the amount of effort that they put in is astounding, as I found out in my intensive three hour zombie bootcamp. Our trainer for

the day and ‘head zombie’ at 2.8 Hours Later, Alex Noble, explained that ‘although your zombie isn’t necessarily my zombie’ he did expect a high performance level, adding: “By the time you lovely people leave, you’ll be bloodthirsty monsters”, as you can probably tell, the professional zombie takes his zombie training very seriously. After a detailed presentation covering the main aspects of the game and all the health and safety information, we were led outside to properly get into the training – in front of crowds of people, which wasn’t embarrassing at all. Alex and two experienced zombies had us begin our training with a decent stretch. Our group of about 60 potential zombies, young and old, got some strange looks just doing squats, so you can imagine the reaction when we launched into full on zombie-mode.We were then made to pair up with a stranger (hey Laura) and start stretching out those vocal chords, all in preparation for the groaning and shrieking – told you there was a lot of effort involved. After scaring myself with noises I didn’t even know I could make and being horrified at my terrible lung-capacity, the signature zombie walks were introduced. We attempted a couple of the basics; the fish-hook-pulling-you-upwardsfrom-the-chin zombie, the knock-knee and the drunk zombie (my personal favourite), before we then started trying to run like zombies, all whilst throwing in the sound effects. Whenever I took a moment out, terrible lung capacity remember, I was impressed with the effort everyone was putting in, people were really getting into it. There was every size and shape zombie out there, snarling their hearts out, and all ages too. When I asked one hopeful zombie, who wishes to remain anonymous, why he attended he said: “It’s a stress relief thing for me. I’ve been volunteering as a zombie here for years, I’ve went all over the UK and spend a lot of money on hotels and things, just to come and scare people for a few nights.” After perfecting our zombies, Alex and the trainers asked us to give it our all to see if we had what it takes to scare people to the point of wetting themselves – Glasgow is apparently notorious for people peeing themselves during the game out of pure fear. Thankfully we all passed zombie school – Alex did say you’d have to be a “real nugget” to fail – and are officially qualified to scare Glasgow silly. After all that I’ll be very disappointed if no-one pees their pants.

Mad Max – Fury Road works well as a standalone movie and aside from Max’s glimpses of past events (which for new viewers, will only help further the idea that Max is on the verge of insanity), it makes no mention of the previous films. In short, Mad Max Fury Road is a thrilling action movie that is a worthy successor to the previous entries in the franchise.

POLTERGEIST 3D

As unnecessary horror reboots go, Poltergeist certainly isn’t the worst. It had the potential to be dismal but is instead a fairly average paranormal thriller. Sadly, it pales in comparison to successful reboots like 2013’s Evil Dead, and fails to bring anything innovative or provocative to the genre.

STILL ALICE

I know, summer blockbuster chat can all be a bit much. Superheroes, sequels and big comedies dominate the media, the box office and everyone’s chat for the entire summer. But 2015 presents something we’ve waited fourteen years for. The eagerly anticipated Jurassic World is finally released on 12 June and for those who grew up watching the series fanatically, it comes not a moment too soon, Hollywood darling Chris Pratt is the main star, continuing his run of enormously successful movie franchises and honing the impressive skill of being hugely famous yet somehow insanely likeable. The film has an impressive cast, including the amazing Bryce Dallas Howard as Claire Dearing, the park operations manager, and BD Wong, who reprises his role of Dr Henry Wu from the first film. It’s sad that Richard Attenborough will be the missing link, having been so intrinsic to Jurassic Park, but his character John Hammond will undoubtedly be a part of the story somehow. Set 22 years after the events of Jurassic Park, Isla Nublar – the island where it all kicked off before – has become an interactive dinosaur theme park (because that’s obviously what you do after a horrific, traumatic event – work the merch stand and hope for the best next time). Pratt plays Owen Grady, one of the park’s

members of staff, and whose studies focus primarily on velociraptors. Because no one in these movies knows when to leave scary stuff alone, his bosses decide to create a hybrid dinosaur, Indominus Rex, in an attempt to bring bigger crowds to the park. And everyone is somehow surprised when Indominus Rex escapes. The responsibility falls on Owen to capture the dinosaur – who destroys and eats everything in its path – before it’s too late. The buzz around the trailer was hard to avoid upon its release; but this humble nerd resisted, waiting instead to see it on the big screen, and was not disappointed. It looks epic and stunning, with the dinosaurs looking as monstrous and destructive as they should and the action seeming gleefully relentless. It also looks kinda scary, which as a grown man I am happy to admit. When you first see Jurassic Park as a kid, that terror never leaves you, and Jurassic World promises to be as grisly and full of shocks as its predecessors. Of course, there remains a pressure to top or be even equal to the previous Jurassic outings. The first film was the highest-grossing film of all time until Titanic and is considered a classic. It was also pioneering in its use of CGI and special effects. Therefore, there is a lot riding on Jurassic World to maintain the quality of the franchise. Okay, as long as it’s better than Jurassic Park III, all will be fine. The Jurassic Park franchise is so iconic and important to many people, but rather than be sceptical, we should be excited about Jurassic World; Chris Pratt is a proven action movie star with enough humour to flesh out any character, Spielberg is an executive producer and the special effects are insane. As far as summer block busters go, this Jonny Stone one may just set itself apart from @jonny_stone_ the crowd.

Julianne Moore might already have an impressive bank of work but Still Alice is her most memorable performance to date. Her role as an esteemed linguists professor who is diagnosed with early onset alzheimers is oscar-worthy, but Kristen Stewart’s performance is also surprisingly remarkable.

Fans of Sex and The City will love this latest offering from it’s author, Candace Bushnell. It’s an addictive story about fame, love and foolishness that spoofs pop culture, celeb worship and the meaning of identity all whilst sticking to Bushnell’s trademark witty style.

TERMINATOR GENISYS Arnie is back as the iconic cyborg in this explosive reboot of the hit sci-fi franchise. In the future, John Connor (Jason Clarke) is the leader of the human resistance against Skynet. After he sends his friend, Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back in time to 1984 in order to protect his mother from a Terminator, an unexpected turn of events creates an altered timeline. This Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) is no longer a normal, everyday waitress, but a skilled fighter with a Terminator guardian (Arnold Schwarzenegger) by her side. Now Reese must adjust to a new mission – to reset the future. Arnold Schwarzenegger is back in his signature role, as the Terminator faces off against his greatest foe – himself. With cuttingedge special effects and an exciting cast including Game of Thrones actress Clarke, Terminator Genisys is set to be the first in a whole new Terminator trilogy. Terminator Genisys is released in UK cinemas on 2nd July.

INSIDIOUS CHAPTER 3

Set before the haunting of the Lambert family began, Insidious: Chapter 3 takes us back to the beginning, showing how Elise Rainier learned to use her ability to contact the dead. When a teenage girl (Stefanie Scott), who is badly injured in a traffic accident, is targeted by a dangerous supernatural entity from the Further, the realm of the dead, her desperate father calls in a team of paranormal investigators to try and help her. This chilling prequel, reveals how gifted psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) reluctantly agrees to use her ability to contact the dead in order to help the teenage girl. Insidious Chapter 3 is released in UK cinemas on 5th June.

The Longest Ride centres on the star-crossed love affair between Luke, a former champion bull rider looking to make a comeback, and Sophia, a college student who is about to embark upon her dream job in New York City’s art world. Released back in Apil across the pond, The Longest Ride is finally coming to UK cinemas. Brought to us by Nicholas Sparks (writer of The Notebook and Dear John) we can all expect a good cry over this film adaptation. Starring Scott Eastwood and Britt Roberston, can this couple finally be our answer to Ryan Gosling’s and Rachel McAdams timeless performace in The Notebook? Well we’ll just have to wait and see. The Longest Ride is released in UK cinemas on 19th June.

MINIONS 3D This prequel to Despicable Me puts those fun, lovable little servants front and centre. After a long history of easily finding evil masters to serve but, then, unintentionally killing them, the Minions travel to the United States in the late 1960s. With no master to serve, Minions Kevin, Stuart and Bob set out on a quest to find a new villain to work for. Travelling to Villain-Con in the hope of being recruited by Scarlet Overkill, they soon find that she might actually be too evil even for them. The movie features voice work by Sandra Bullock (playing the wonderfully named Scarlet Overkill), and Jon Hamm (as her husband, Herb). Minions is released in UK cinemas on 26th June.

MAGIC MIKE XXL Ladies....breathe! Channing Tatum is back to lead the beefcake brigade in this highly anticipated sequel to 2012 hit Magic Mike. Thie story is based three years after the events of Magic Mike, and stripper group the Kings of Tampa are getting bored with their job and are thinking of quitting (oh no!). But fortunately for us, they decide to go out in style, with one last blow-out performance at Myrtle Beach. Along the way, Mike and the guys learn some new moves. One thing’s for sure – their final show will be more spectacular than ever! Magic Mike XXL is released in UK cinemas on 3rd July.

ONE LAST SECRET

smash Camden Rocks competition Local lads One Last Secret have just announced they have won the competition to perform at Camden Rocks festival 2015. The Kilmarnock based pop rock quartet managed to shine through the 3,000 other applicants and racked up double the amount of votes to their competitors. The incredible support from their fan base helped them grasp this amazing opportunity. ‘We’re just absolutely over the moon,’ says lead singer Wesley Scott. “The support from our fans and the general public has been amazing and we’re so thankful to every single person who took the time to vote – or to ask others to vote. We can’t wait to return to London – and to be a part of that line-up – it’s a dream come true. Hopefully this is the first of many festivals in 2015/2016!” Camden Rocks features an impressive 2015 line up with Bullet For My Valentine and Funeral for a Friend topping the bill. ‘We’ve supported some pretty well-established acts in the past, so to be able to add them to our musical CV is an absolute honour’, says Scott Of course, Camden has a long standing reputation as the local haunt for countless talented musicians. The Camden Rocks festival was curated by Chris MacCormack, who is also responsible for the Camden’s most iconic club nights. Camden’s Rocks mission is to champion up and coming artists in the UK whilst celebrating those more established. One Last Secret entered the competition without much

hope. It was just an amazing potential opportunity to play in Britain’s most iconic musical hub. Yet, they managed to dazzle and made it into the Top 50 out of 3,000 entries. The Top 50 had to then encourage the public and their fans to give them a vote. Only One Last Secret managed to gain double the votes required to win. “We’ve never really went for online band competitions or battle of the bands type things in the past,” according to Scott. ‘We’ve always carried the feeling that bands should be recognized by their talent rather than how many friends/fans they can get to vote online. But the opportunity to play in London – and being given the credit of making the top 50 of 3,000 other applicants made this a little more special.” They will play a ‘Thank You’ gig at King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut on June 4 to show appreciation for everyone who supported them. “We really want to put on a great show for all the people back home. We haven’t played King Tut’s for a while – though this will be our seventh appearance there –

it’s a great venue and one we always love to return to,” says guitarist Liam McNamara. This achievement came only days after the release of their debut album Restart, which received a receptive response. So much so, that XFM Scotland featured leading single as Breakthrough Track on the drive time show. One Last Secret are finally reaping the rewards for all their hard work. “We’ve had set backs – and we’re no where near done in terms of progression – but we take every opportunity we can to further ourselves and get our music in front of as many people as possible, says Scott. “The internet has provided a platform for any musician to be heard. In one sense that’s a blessing – but on the other hand it means there’s a lot out there so you really have to put some thought behind what you’re doing and who you’re aiming it at.” Hopefully, in the near future One Last Secret will no longer be a well kept one.

The Big Interview: The Darkness

THE DARKNESS EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW Hit singles like ‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love’ and ‘Love is Only a Feeling’ launched their careers over a decade ago but later this year, The Darkness make their long-awaited return to Glasgow as part of their Blast of Our Kind tour. The Lowestoft band will be touring in support of the release of their album Last of Our Kind which became available to buy earlier this month. Speaking to TSA in time for the album’s release and forthcoming tour announcement, the band’s largerthan-life bassist Frankie Poullain talked of what you can expect to hear on the album and of some of the more unusual experiences he has had while on tour with The Darkness. Q: THE DARKNESS ARE NO STRANGERS TO ARENA TOURS. ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR UK TOUR LATER THIS YEAR? A: Naturally. With the magnificent Rufus Taylor on the drum set we’re egging each on even more than usual. He’ll be belting out gold plated harmonies by then I expect. We’ll also be debuting our new single which we’re writing in Ireland next month. There, I said it. Q: WITH THE UPCOMING RELEASE OF YOUR FOURTH STUDIO ALBUM, LAST OF OUR KIND, CAN FANS EXPECT TO HEAR A LARGE SET LIST OF SONGS, INCLUDING YOUR OLDER MATERIAL? A: Technically you are correct in your underwhelming assumptions. I can reveal that the set will be large, and yes, we shall be playing “older” material, as well as newer material. I think the fans will be pleasantly surprised.

Q: WHICH SINGLE FROM YOUR NEW ALBUM ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO PERFORMING? A: ‘Mighty Wings’ is pretty special. Will it be a single? I’ve no idea. It deals with mortality – what more do you want? Q: YOUR NEW MATERIAL HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS “AN ALBUM OF UNPARALLELED BEAUTY AND POWER”. DO YOU STILL FEEL HUMBLED BY THIS KIND OF REACTION? AND WHAT HAS THE FAN REACTION BEEN LIKE? A: It’s hard for a western person to feel humbled as we have been indoctrinated by greed and entitlement. If you want humble you look to the east. Buddhists can be humble, when they stop bragging about all the yoga moves they can pull off. Atheists are often arrogant about their supposed superior understanding. So what’s the answer? The fan reaction has been incredible. The Darkness Army have a Facebook page and I refuse to look at it for fear it will make me the opposite of humble. Q: AS THIS IS NOW YOUR FOURTH ALBUM, DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOUR MUSIC IS CONTINUALLY CHANGING AND ALLOWING A NEW GENERATION OF FANS TO APPRECIATE YOUR SOUND AND COME TO THE TOUR, OR DO YOU FEEL THAT YOUR FANS, WHO WERE THERE FROM THE BEGINNING, ARE THE ONES WHO APPRECIATE THE TOURS THE MOST? A: Lots of our fans were too young first time round and now their parents will allow them to go to a proper rock show. They were there from the beginning, five-year-olds getting their rocks off to Growing on Me on MTV 2. Now they’re 17 and can finally get into a Darkness gig – unless the promoter has stupidly made it an over 18’s only show?

Q: GLASGOW IS KNOWN FOR ITS VIBRANT MUSIC SCENE AND GREAT ATMOSPHERE. WHAT HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE OF PLAYING IN THE CITY BEEN LIKE? IF NOT, WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO? A: Always very intense in a good way. Glasgow fans are willing you on to make it into a special night and you just have to oblige. They’re not embarrassed or self-conscious like southern crowds can be. King Tuts and Barrowlands are sacred places, anyone who’s been there knows that. Q: YOU’VE PREVIOUSLY MADE USE OF HUGE STAGE PROPS TO DO WITH CERTAIN AREAS OF THE BODY (AHEM), DO YOU HAVE ANY SIMILAR PLANS FOR THIS TOUR? A: We never did manage the ‘arse de triumphe’, who knows what’s in store? Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ASPECT OF TOURING, AND WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BEST/CRAZIEST MEMORY? A: Sleeping in the tour bus and pretending I’m in a coffin. Actually when it’s icy outside, it is pretty nerve wracking because I keep thinking the driver’s going to skid and we’ll topple over. Sometimes I convince myself that the driver is bound to fall asleep, because if I’m so knackered he must be too. Q: FINALLY, AS THE GLASGOW TOUR DATE IS IN DECEMBER, CAN FANS EXPECT TO HEAR A ROUSING RENDITION OF ‘CHRISTMAS TIME (DON’T LET THE BELLS END)’? A: Can’t think of any reason why not. Engineering Video Games & Beyond Think you have an idea to top GTA, or a character to give Lara Croft a run for her money? The upcoming Engineering Video Games & Beyond event at the Glasgow Science Centre can tell how exactly how to put your plans into action. Organised by IESIS (Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland) through profeng.org – designed to promote engineering and encourage young people into the field – this particular series of talks promotes careers in software engineering and computer games development. The speakers are experts in their fields, working in various departments of Abertay University; as home to the UK’s first national Centre for Excellence in computer games education and also the biggest Sony Playstation development lab in Europe, the university has a wellearned reputation as a major player in video game technology and education. They will discuss how games

are made, but also how the field is not as niche as one might think: the software and technology developed for video games is finding many more uses in other disciplines and industries. Professor of Systems Biology Jim Bown, a key contributor in Abertay’s mathematical modelling and bioinformatics centre, will show how computer visualisation tools are being applied in scientific and engineering fields, including the design of urban environments and the development of anti-cancer drug combinations. Dr Natalie Coull, who teaches the university’s Masters in Ethical Hacking and Computer Security and whose research covers computer security for children, will examine the significance of recent highprofile cyber-attacks including the now-infamous ‘Sony hacks’. Matt Bett, lecturer in games engineering, will show

how his research and development in ‘virtual camera’ technology led to working with Fox Studios on a filmmaking tool used in the massive Hollywood blockbuster Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Whether you are already studying video game engineering and want to know what your options are or you’ve got the next big video game idea and need the know-how, the Glasgow Science Centre at 4.30pm on 15 June, and after hearing what these experts have to say, you may well be on the way to having your work on the big – or indeed very small – screen. It’s no great secret that Scotland’s music scene is a thing to be proud of. So here at TSA, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to present you with our monthly pick of who we think are doing epically well in Scotland right now. Keep your eyes out for these up and coming bands. This is TSA’s ‘Pick of the Month’.

39 “We played a hell of a lot of gigs,” Mitchell-lay remarks. “We began to scrape together what now might be called a fan base of friends and family who would come to our gigs.” Prior to landing the headlining spot of the West End Festival, the duo played frequently in venues across Glasgow like the O2 ABC and the Garage on Sauchiehall Street. They continued to perform outside of their studies – Christopher is drawing to the end of an Audio Technology and Electronics degree at Glasgow Caledonian University – making little to no sustainable profit: a true labour of love for their art. “As much as we were grateful for the fantastic support that we garnered, we wanted to reach a wider audience and get as many people interested in what we did with our music. This is beginning to happen!” After performing as a duo for a long period of time, the band grew frustrated by limitations outwith their control. Always noting the potential for a 3rd part harmony whilst playing – though, having little financial access to a suitable candidate – they struggled to bring their acoustic trio fantasy into fruition. Adorned with music talent at every angle of his university course, engaging with individuals along the entire spectrum of varied genre and musical influence, Mitchell-lay befriended vocalist McPhelim. “It came to my attention he [McPhelim] had a thunderous bass voice, and I was also aware that he could play many, many instruments too. With this in mind, I approached Scott with the idea of bringing a third member to Sand & Sea who, thankfully, trusted my judgement.” Two months of intense rehearsals for the festival season have now passed and the band are now at their peak in time for their headline slot. Planning to grace their audience with a mix of acoustic covers and original tunes, they are confident that their set list will have something for everyone – their loyal fans and new listeners alike. They currently don’t have an EP but we are in negotiations with a local recording studio to rectify this. They intend to smash straight into some recording immediately after the festival, as well as introducing live covers on a YouTube channel shortly following. “The West End Festival is a great platform for local acts to get a chance to show the area what they’re all about, though, I feel like it should get more attention in the local media than it currently does. This is also our first ever gig as a trio and I think that with Dillon, our secret weapon, we can make a pretty good impact.” Tickets for Sand & Sea and support at the West End Festival in June are on sale now and shifting fast. A duo which formed over B.O.B.’s hit Magic has evolved into a three-part-harmony Scottish sensation just waiting to happen. A mere three years after their formation, Sand & Sea – composed of singer/songwriter Christopher Mitchelllay, singer/ukulele player Scott Rodger and bass vocalist Dillon McPhelim – will reach the peak of their young career headlining the coveted West End Festival in Glasgow on Friday 5th of June.

The band formed during Mitchell-lay and Rodger’s time in school where the boys revealed they found a connection playing drums together. Stemming from a music department in South Lanarkshire, the boys had no intentions of taking their musical exploits further than the school building. But shortly after meeting, the duo decided to tackle acoustic guitar and ukulele respectively, uniting as an acoustic act with a particular focus on angelic harmonies.

Scottish Album of the Year Awards this June

Judging the Scottish Album of the Year Awards really can’t be the easiest job. Every year since its conception in 2012, the longlist has been packed with work from some of the very best musicians and artists in Scotland and cutting the initial twenty down to a shortlist of just ten albums must have been difficult. The hardest part, of course, will come on 17 June, when the judges reconvene at Glasgow’s 02 ABC to select the one LP they deem worthy to receive this year’s award. Artists included in previous shortlists have ranged widely from the internationally acclaimed to smaller and more local acts. Biffy Clyro, who have enjoyed phenomenal mainstream success, appeared on last year’s shortlist with their album Opposites, while in 2013 Edinburgh hip-hop group Stanley Odd were nominated for their Reject LP, despite having gathered only a relatively small cult following. This consistent attention to quality over album sales or chart position has stood the award’s reputation in good stead, and it’s now one of the most prestigious and sought-after in Scotland. This year, however, had arguably the best longlist yet. Even with Paolo Nutini nominated for his album Caustic Love, alongside Belle and Sebastian’s Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance, there was still plenty of room for the work of slightly

lesser known acts like Treacherous Orchestra and Fatherson. While the longlist is more than crowded enough when it comes to high quality albums, there’s actually an even longer list that can be found online. A total of 147 albums received nominations for this year’s award, including 2013 nominees Stanley Odd and relative youngsters The Xcerts, whose album There Is Only You reached Number 8 in the Rock Album charts. After another incredible year in Scottish music, with exciting new releases from a wide variety of artists in a range of different genres, the final stage of the judging process is drawing near. On Thursday the 28 May the shortlist was announced, with nine albums selected by the panel and a tenth voted in by the public. Although only one artist can take home the 2015 award on 17 June, there’s no doubt that every one of the musicians shortlisted are more than deserving of their nomination. Once again, the Scottish Album of the Year Awards has shone a light on the country’s incredible music scene, reminding us all just how exciting a time this is for the arts in Scotland. This year’s shortlist includes, Belle & Sebastian’s Girls In Peacetime Want to Dance, Paolo Nutini’s Caustic Love, and Young Fathers Dead.

GIGS OF THE MONTH A REVIEW OF THE TOP GIGS GLASGOW HAD TO OFFER IN MAY

As venues go, Glasgow’s Broadcast is far from the top of the totem pole. Small, dark and dingy, with a stage barely a few inches above the floor, the establishment’s saving grace is the excellent bar upstairs, where the public can go to get a drink before the show. This aspect of the venue was particularly useful on the night, as the band seemed to be running late. In the end, doors open roughly two hours later than originally billed, and the headline act doesn’t take to the stage until almost eleven o’clock. Before they do, however, the first support act opens the night. Adam Ross, frontman of the indie eight-piece Randolph’s Leap, performed a solo set, sitting down on stage with just an acoustic guitar and his raw vocal abilities. Likeable and charismatic in his stage persona, Ross’s music is nonetheless left somewhat lacking. The lyrical intelligence of his work is certainly notable, but the soft and emotionally charged delivery feels rather laboured. On top of this, after the first few songs and without any other instrumentation to add variety, it proves difficult to distinguish one track from the next. Following Ross and on immediately before Moon King is Lylo, a band that walks a striking line between psychedelic-rock and jazz-funk. Coming complete with an excellent saxophonist, the band’s performance was exciting and fresh, standing out at once. Their excellent musicianship is balanced perfectly against their relaxed and uncomplicated stage presence. Visibly enjoying themselves all the while, Lylo are definitely a band to watch for in the future.

Toronto-based Moon King is essentially just two people, Daniel Benjamin & Maddy Wilde, but on the night they were backed by a drummer and a guitarist, the latter doubling up behind a synth. Wilde also played guitar throughout the show, and the lack of a bass in the mix proves to have little impact. The band delivered a tight and confident performance, with songs like “Crucified” and “Secret Life” standing out as particular highlights. Intricate and extremely effective harmonies blend over danceable synth-rock, complimented by smart and well-delivered lyrics from both Benjamin and Wilde. It was a rather sparse audience, however, and without a solid crowd in the room it must be difficult

YER GRANNY Glasgow King’s Theatre on 27 May

It had been a long, long week. Still highly strung by the kind of ‘recreational guilt’ that goes hand-in-hand with exams – and doesn’t usually wear off immediately after – I fought my way through the intensely overpopulated Foyer at the Kings Theatre, still inundated with thoughts of 18th Century Poetry and hopes for a goodnight’s sleep. Before arriving here, I had gathered two things about my evening ahead: 1. I was grossly misinformed when told, “We’re going to see ‘Yer Granny’.” My granny does not live in The Kings Theatre. 2. Rab C. Nesbit would be wearing an apron and a wig, but in no way resemble my own grandmother. Sitting down, I found myself mesmerised by the accuracy of the set. Yer Granny is set in 1970s Scotland – which the audience were able to determine just by looking at the stage. Before us was a home, a very 70s home. I spied a cream radio, a geometrically patterned rug, a rounded SMEG fridge-freezer, an orange coloured settee and bookshelves that crippled under the weight

of oddly shaped ornaments. The highest points of the yellow, hexagonal wallpaper were blackened by nicotine and through a window, just barely visible on stage, a neon Fish and Chip Shop sign flickered with life. The play follows the Russo family’s struggle to survive alongside their “diabolical” 100-year-old Granny (played by Gregor Fisher) who is eating them out of a house and home. The cast is composed of what one might recognise as the “Scottish A-Team”, featuring Paul Riley of Still Game and Angela Rafferty, Brian Pettifer and Gregor Fisher of Rab C Nesbit. Each cast member represents the fundamental pillars of a Scottish family, not only in the 70s, but today as well. You have the 17-year-old party-goer who, despite ultimately causing the deaths of three people, remains to be her father’s “pet lamb”; the fatherfigure (Cammy – played by Jonathan Watson), the bread-winner wholeheartedly against signing onto the brew; the sensible mother figure attempting to hold it all together; the uncle who refuses to work; the aunt (Barbara Rafferty) who is trying to

for the band to work up a good rapport with those in front of them. Even at that, though, Moon King’s two band leaders seemed to do very little to connect with the fans in front of them, leaving the stage and the audience somewhat disconnected throughout their performance. If the show was slightly better attended it might be a different story, but the highpoint of the night’s performances remains the accessible dream-pop of Lylo. Moon King certainly possess enormous potential, but to unlock it they may have to work a little harder on their Malcolm Higgins people skills. rekindle a love from her youth; the chip shop owner from across the road who is responsible for putting the Russo family’s takeaway out of business, despite admitting to the unthinkable – watering down his sauces with vinegar; and the grandmother, the glue and heart of the family who is also the sole reason for their spiralled downfall. Yer Granny is a laugh-a-minute production. The lively audience relished in the realities of their beloved lifestyle, cackling as the precious values of modern day Scots were re-enacted before our eyes on stage. Filled to the brim with exclusively Scottish vocabulary, the performance was unintentionally patriotic and heart-warming, reinstating the value of family in a Scottish society. Laughter filled the streets as theatregoers left the venue repeating their favourite lines, in no way rushing to forget the exceptional performance they Rachael Procter @rrretro___ had just witnessed.

Bleachers is an American indie pop act based in New York City that was formed by Jack Antonoff, of Steel Train and Fun. Bleachers slick and emotional pop music is heavily influenced by the ‘80s and the high school-based films of John Hughes while still using modern production techniques. His first single, “I Wanna Get Better”, was released February 18, 2014. Republic of Ireland vote to protect thousands of gay couples across the country in world’s first Gay Referendum As far as days go, Saturday 23 May was pretty gay. For one, Eurovision was on, which pretty much says it all. And it was hosted by Conchita Wurst, the bearded drag queen universally adored around the world. And of course, something monumentally significant happened. In the world’s first referendum on same-sex marriage, the Republic of Ireland voted to protect and validate thousands of gay couples across the country. And it wasn’t even close: more than 62% of people agreed that gay relationships deserve the legal protection and symbolic significance that straight couples receive. The legislation passed means a marriage between two people of the same sex will have the same status under the Irish constitution as a marriage between a man and a woman, and they will not only be recognised as a family but are entitled to the constitutional protection for families. Of course, the preamble to this colossal result was arduous and messy. Ireland in 2015 remains a predominantly Roman Catholic country, with 84.2% of the population identifying with the faith in 2011. Tradition and long-held social beliefs, therefore, threatened the likelihood of gay marriage, given the Vatican opposes civil and religious samesex marriage. Organisations such as Mothers and Fathers Matter actively campaigned against the vote, believing “retaining the [then] present definition of marriage…is in the best interests of children.” But modern Ireland has become more progressive, with people more willing to separate church teachings and social issues that affect our society. Each side of the vote campaigned tirelessly, even desperately. No campaigners received criticism for

using a poster in which a mother and father hold their baby and state “children deserve a mother and a father.” Mostly from the couple in the photo, who were in fact pro-gay marriage and appalled their photo had been used without their permission. And in the lead up to the vote, No campaigns cautiously started receiving funding from US Christian groups to further support their cause. Of course, they did not receive the result they desired, and an overwhelming 1,201,607 people voted in favour of same-sex marriage while 734,300 voted against. And its significance cannot be overstated. The very fact this was a referendum is hugely important; people wanted progress. Scotland’s politicians voted to introduce gay marriage, but all we could do was lobby and pester our MSPs. The decision was in the hands of the Irish people, and they overwhelmingly chose to support Ireland’s LGBTI community. People did what was best for their country and its inhabitants, and in doing so altered the way people consider and defend LGBTI people. What was also moving was the volume of support from straight allies, realising that their gay family members and friends needed their support. Irish ex-pats travelled home in their masses to make sure their vote was counted. Celebrities endorsed the decision, no doubt persuading undecided voters. If ever there was a time to step up, it was now. And our straight allies did not disappoint. Furthermore, Ireland’s landmark decision now places pressure on other countries to follow suit, especially Northern Ireland, which is now the last remaining country in the British Isles that opposes equal marriage. The Northern Irish Assembly rejected another motion for gay marriage for the third time in 18 months. DUP MLA Mervyn Storey told the Belfast Telegraph “The re-definition of marriage would represent a change of monumental

significance. It must not happen in Northern Ireland.” Well, at least the first thing he said is correct. These politicians seem to be unaware that their refusal is a human rights issue and places them miles behind most countries in Western Europe. This landslide victory has pushed the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, will join Amnesty International and gay rights group the Rainbow Project to hold a mass rally in support of equal marriage rights on 13th June. Moreover, opposition parties in Germany are challenging Angela Merkel to introduce equal marriage as opposed to civil partnerships, while the controversial Australian Prime Minister has refused to entertain the idea of an equal marriage referendum. Despite his own sister being in a same-sex relationship… Equal marriage is of course a hugely important step in the progression of gay rights, and now we have achieved it in so many countries we can focus our energy and momentum to achieve equality for everyone. Trans people continue to face adversity and danger around the world, with 1,612 reported killings of trans people in 62 countries worldwide from January 1st 2008 to October 1st 2014. And it is still illegal to be gay in 79 countries. Clearly much work has to be done; we have to maintain the momentum of this amazing result and help others. Waiting for the result was pretty nerve-wracking, relentlessly refreshing news sites for any indication of a result either way. Yes, I may be Scottish; but the prospect of friends and loved ones not enjoying the same civil right Scotland has been so fortunate to celebrate was daunting and scary. With each achievement – political or social – we find ourselves one step closer to achieving full equality. It was an emotional result, and one that demonstrates a seismic shift in the way our community is treated in Western Europe.

Le1f IS JUST TOO GOOD

Looking for a new queer artist to get you through the summer? If you haven’t heard of rapper Le1f (pronounced like leaf) we recommend you stop reading right this minute, watch his videos on YouTube and continue reading. You good? Okay, let’s continue. Real name Khalif Diouf, Le1f is one of hip-hop’s few openly gay artists and made his name as a producer before venturing on his solo career in 2012. He’s also a trained dancer and his videos are amazing, turning stereotypes upside down and giving us something pretty innovative. Describing himself as “camp and street” on Twitter, Le1f embraces the facets of masculinity and femininity he so desires, gleefully projecting whatever image he wants. Hiphop needs blurred lines. Obviously not that Blurred Lines. His latest EP Hey was released last year and is amazing; it is playful and full of black humour – nerds: he alludes to being a Charmander in “Hey,” one of many Pokémon references – and totally subversive; on “Sup” he challenges what male rappers ‘should be,’ and uses the sexualised language in male-driven hip-hop in a queer context, which is frank and refreshing. His pace switches between dizzying rapid fire and slower speeds, giving every song a different feel. Listen to “Wut,” one of his stand-out tracks. Sound familiar? It should, as many have accused Macklemore and Ryan Lewis of ripping him on “Thrift Shop.” Because this is 2015, a Twitter feud ensued (“News just in: Gay people don’t care about your video about gay people” – Le1f on “Same Love”) But upon comparing both songs, Le1f’s grievances seem legit. Hip-hop is becoming an increasingly progressive space for queer artists; rappers and singers including the hugely successful Frank Ocean, Angel Haze and Mykki Bianco (both of whom we wholeheartedly recommend, especially Haze’s heart wrenching re-working of “Same Love”) have all emerged as innovative and successful presences in the industry. But they are trailblazers: hip-hop is traditionally exclusive to queer artists. But this group is breaking the glass ceiling with every project. Artists like Le1f are giving queer kids a voice in a way that is provocative and empowering, turning the world of hiphop on its head and changing the rules.

LGBTI NEWS ROUNDUP Comic and writer Sandi Toksvig has announced she has quit her role on BBC Radio 4’s The News Quiz after 9 years to found the Women’s Equality party, which plans to field candidates in the 2020 general election. Stating that Britain’s current political system is “broken beyond repair,” Toksvig – a proud lesbian and LGBTI activist – will put women’s issues to the forefront and promote gender equality. She says “We have politics driven by fear and greed and instead of whinging, I decided to do something about it … I know that equality is better for everyone and a society founded on equal principles is more at ease with itself.” She has, of course, received abuse from trolls, but has ignored criticism, saying “I want to grab life by the throat, even if every time you raise your head above the parapet somebody tries to shoot you down.”

Iconic feminist scholar Germaine Greer has been the latest celebrity to attack Elton John and David Furnish’s family, accusing the couple of “deconstructing motherhood.” The claim follows Greer’s discovery that John is stated as their sons’ mother on their birth certificates, suggesting similar couples are “emptying out” the concept of motherhood. Speaking to the Daily Mail, she states “We now have a ‘genetic’ mother, who supplies eggs. It depends entirely on where she is if she is going to be allowed to know what happens to the eggs. And women tend to care…I’m sorry. Did we talk about this? Did we sit down and talk about what eggs mean to women?” Greer has also been criticised for belittling trans women, referring to them as “ghastly parodies” of women and belittling transphobia while speaking at the Cambridge Student Union in January.

This summer sees several countries unite and offer support to oppressed LGBTI communities around the world. On 17th May, the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Korea and the embassies of 10 European countries in South Korea declared their support for LGBT rights in celebration of IDAHO, the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia. Many countries including France, Germany, Slovenia, Sweden, and Great Britain pledged to further support LGBT rights in Korea. In June the EU office and the embassies of 10 countries in Korea will participate in the Korea Queer Culture Festival in Seoul. Furthermore, the US envoy for LGBTI rights Randy Berry will visit Uganda in July. This follows criticism of the lack of urgency the US demonstrated in response to Uganda’s previous Anti-Homosexuality Act, which imposed a life sentence. He will also visit Jamaica, where sexual activity between men results in a 10 year prison sentence.

The General Synod – the body of the Church of England that legislates and deliberates matters within the church – is to discuss the prospect of introducing naming ceremonies for transgender people. Reverend Chris Newlands told The Guardian he was approached by a trans man asking to be re-baptised; “I told him ‘Once you’re baptised, you’re baptised.’ He said ‘But I was baptised as a girl, under a different name.’” This led the Reverend to create a service renewing his baptism and celebrating his true identity and continue to officially call on the House of Bishops to “consider whether some nationally commended liturgical materials might be prepared to mark a person’s gender transition.” The Archbishop’s Council has no official date on which the matter will be discussed, but it would be a huge milestone for thousands of trans Christians who wish to celebrate their identities in their religious institution.

The 2015 Rainbow Index has revealed that Scotland is the best country in Europe in terms of legally protecting its LGBTI citizens. Scotland met 92% of the Index’s criteria, which includes everything from measures against hate crime to work place discrimination. We are ahead of England and Wales at 86% – who according to the study lack legal protection for intersex people – and Northern Ireland, who “(fail) to respect LGBTI human rights in a range of ideas. The five countries ranked worst for LGBTI legal equality in Europe were Azerbaijan (5%), Russia (8%), Armenia (9%) and Ukraine (10%). The study warned against complacency, however, stating that 70% of LGBTI youth face bullying in school. But this is an inspiring accomplishment that should make our community proud. Yeah, we’re a pretty big deal.

The Equality Network is hosting first annual Scottish LGBTI Awards Everyone loves an award show. Look at Elton John, he puts on the Oscars after-party every year, and that must be a nightmare to organise. The Scottish LGBTI community is finally getting its own red carpet affair celebrating the enormous achievements we have made in the fight for equality. The Equality Network is hosting the first annual Scottish LGBTI Awards at the amazing Grand Central Hotel on 10 September. The Scottish LGBTI Awards has been organised to celebrate and recognise those who have made an enormous contribution to equality in Scotland in all its forms. These people will have worked tirelessly to protect the rights and lives of LGBTI people across the country, and in a landmark year in which gay marriage was passed, the competition is bound to be fierce. *clicks*

Yes, we’re aware it’s only June. But these gongs won’t nominate themselves. The awards rely on your votes to make sure Scotland’s most talented and deserving LGBTI activists are recognised. There are 12 categories in which you can nominate people, ranging from the Outstanding Campaigning Award to Student Group of the Year; so be sure to put forward a group from your university or college that you feel does our community proud! The nomination forms are available on the Equality Network website ( http://www.equalitynetwork.org/nominate/ and the deadline is 2nd July. The shortlist will be announced on 16th July and the awards will be decided either by public vote or by Equality Network’s independent panel, the line-up of which has yet to be announced.

The night will celebrate the remarkable progress that has been made in a country that decriminalised homosexuality in 1980 and look to the future to ensure the protection of LGBTI rights and safety. So much has been achieved; it’s time we celebrated the people who have shaped the Scotland we have today. The ceremony takes place at the Grand Central Hotel – which immediately makes any event 8 times more glamorous – and includes a champagne reception, a three-course dinner and entertainment throughout the evening. There are only 300 tickets available, so you’ll need to book as soon as possible if you want to make sure you’re there on the 10th September.

In Arkham Knight, the story takes place a year after the events of Arkham City with Scarecrow attacking Gotham City and forcing a massive evacuation. With the Arkham Knight by his side, Scarecrow has united the city’s villains in an attempt to finally kill everyone’s favourite caped crusader. The Elder Scrolls Online (PS4, Xbox One)

After many delays, The Elder Scrolls Online finally makes an appearance on current-gen consoles after originally coming out on PC early last year. Set around a millennium before the events of Skyrim, the game’s story revolves around a war contested by three alliances for the imperial throne of Tamriel, and the war against the Deadra. Players can create characters belonging to each of these three alliances and follow the main storyline or engage in side-quests with friends, or alone if that’s what you fancy. In The Elder Scrolls Online, most of the continent of Tamriel is available to travel through. However, as most of the areas were unlocked through expansion content on PC, it may be that this content will be made available through DLC packages on consoles. The good news is that the game will require no subscription fee. The Elder Scrolls Online is released on June 9.

BIKRAM YOGA If you can’t stand the heat, get out the yoga studio. Actually don’t. The only aim of your first Bikram yoga class is to stay in the sweltering room for the full 90 minutes. The studio is kept at a toasty 40.5C with 40% humidity thrown in as well. It is advised to wear light and breathable sports gear, along with topping up your hydration levels. I felt sick in my first class and managed to take so many breaks I only completed half of the positions. This is completely normal. Do not wear cotton full length tracksuit bottoms is the lesson here. Yet, a study conducted by the American Council on Exercise has proven that the intense heat of Bikram yoga classes does not necessarily equate to a stronger work out. However, it is still mind bogglingly popular, allowing Glasgow studios to run daily classes from 6am to 8:30pm. Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow and Andy Murray are massive fans too.

Bikram Choudhurry created Bikram yoga after recovering from a severe knee injury when he was 17. He began practicing yoga at the young age of four and was soon training up to six hours each day. He won the National India Yoga Championship at 13 and kept this title for the following three years. Obviously the main difference between Bikram and regular yoga is the heat. The positions derive from the simpler Hatha yoga style. Each class consists of two sets of 26 positions. None are exceptionally difficult and I can barely cross my legs on a cold day. The warmth allows you to perform deeper stretches due to increased muscle flexibility. It is ideal for those who have suffered an injury or have arthritis. Another major benefit through regular training is the ability to quiet the mind. Stress levels are known to dramatically ebb. The skill of mindfulness goes hand in hand with yoga. There has been countless claims that Bikram yoga has helped to combat depression. Also, you will sweat like mad. The most you’ve ever perspired in your entire life. Your body will be weeping. You’re releasing all these toxins and impurities from your body. My skin has never looked so clear. It may seem a horrendous way to pass an hour and a half but the rewards are incredible. As Bikram famously said, ‘suffer Holly Calender for 90 minutes or 90 years’.

Take the leap with competitive Horse Riding With exams finally over and summer pretending that it is in full bloom, are you considering taking up a new sport or hobby over the summer to keep you out of beer gardens and to pass the time before uni starts back? Horse riding is a great hobby to take up and if you really fancy it, why not take it up as a competitive sport? Many think that horse riding only requires you to sit on a horse’s back and it does all the hard work for you (if only). Well this isn’t the case, horse riding is a very skill related sport that requires a bond between horse and rider. As a rider you need balance, timing, commitment and patience alongside a number of other skills. You simply do not just sit there and tell the horse to go! Horse riding can fall under a number of branches, it can involve show jumping, dressage, cross country, polo, racing and even vaulting. However they all require the same basic principles. Humans have been riding horses for thousands and thousands of years. Back in those days, horses were used more for working purposes, such as hunting and rounding up herds of animals. And this is where the skills of horse riding have been developed and passed down through the years. If this is something you are interested in then there are a number of riding schools up and down the country that

cater for all levels of ability. You will be able to join in on group lessons that will be with people of your ability or get private lessons; however, these are usually shorter in time and more expensive. Getting on to your horse is difficult in itself. If you go for lessons at a riding school, they will help you with this as well as the basic riding, so don’t panic. You should always mount your horse from the left side, this is also called the near side. Take the reins with your left hand and place your left foot in the stirrup. In driving terms, the reins are like your steering wheel and the stirrup is your pedals. Hold the back of the saddle with your right hand, bounce gently in the stirrup and swing your right leg over the horse and sit down gently. So now you’re sat on your four legged friend, balance is essential. Sit up straight and look forward through the horse’s ears. Whenever I am teaching, I tell people to imagine that they are a puppet and that they have string attached to them pulling them upwards towards the ceiling. Make sure your weight is distributed evenly and that your heels are pointing down. Your shoulder, hip and heel should line up as if you are standing. Now you are almost ready to ride. But first you need to hold the reins properly. Make a fist with your hand and point your thumb up. Place the rein between your pinky and

ring finger, through the inside of your palm. Then fold your thumb over the reins. Hold your arms at a 90 degree angle from your shoulder to your elbow. Now you are ready to ride. Instructors will spend some time on making sure you have mastered this. It seems very basic, but it is hugely important when you start to work the horse. Most riding schools and clubs will provide a bombproof horse for your lesson alongside a riding hat. Comfortable clothing is advisable and sensible footwear. Trackys and wellies for your first lesson are totally acceptable. Jeans are a definite no! If this is something you want to take up in the long term then a riding hat should be your first purchase followed by riding boots. However, if you don’t fancy physically sitting on a horse this summer, but would like to watch some events, then why not head to The Royal Highland Show at Ingliston in Edinburgh that is taking place from 18-21 June where it is celebrating its 175th anniversary this year. There are a huge number of equestrian classes alongside plenty of other great attractions and tickets are currently on sale from the official site http://royalhighlandshow.org/ And another equestrian event worth putting in your diary is the Blair Atholl Horse Trials. This is Scotland’s leading equestrian event and gains attention worldwide. The Longines FEI European Eventing Championship takes place at Blair Castle from 10-13 September and tickets can be purchased from the box office.
