WHAT’S ON
FOODIE EXPLORERS CHECK OUT
DANDELION CAFÉ Dandelion Café has been open for less than a year but has already made a huge impact to the local area. Not only has the dream of opening a café been realised for the owners but a derelict tennis pavilion has also been restored to its former glory. Utilising Scottish suppliers such as Dear Green Coffee from Glasgow, Eteaket tea from Edinburgh, eggs from Corrie Mains in Ayrshire, meat from Ramsay of Carluke and even bread from Scotland’s oldest bakery – Alexander Taylor, founded 1820 in Strathaven. The focus is on quality Scottish produce which tastes delicious and supports local jobs. We wandered along on a sunny day to find the café and surrounding park filled with customers. Doggy and kid friendly, Dandelion Café even provides a kids’ play area inside and dog water bowls outside. Never mind all that, what was the cake like? Diet still on course, as always, we shared a lemon sponge. A light and fluffy sponge filled with lemon curd and buttercream icing topped with a thick layer of icing. Perfect! Served alongside was the mellowest flat white coffee around.
If cake isn’t your thing then try their brunch. The daily special was a croissant with crispy bacon and cheesy scrambled egg. A warm, buttery and fluffy croissant topped with crispy bacon which was smothered in creamy, cheesy (very cheesy!) scrambled egg (none of that rubbery stuff here). You can also buy various sandwiches and soup for lunch. In a hurry? Then order a take away, no need to wait for a seat here, get your coffee and cake to go. However, there is a downside to all these good points, it’s popular, perhaps too popular. So you may have to wait a bit for a table. We loved Dandelion Café. The provenance of the food, the friendly service and the location get a big thumbs up so get down quick to secure yourself a table at this busy Southside spot! Address: Newlands Park Pavilion, 26 Lubnaig Road. Glasgow G43 2RY

WHAT’S ON
GET YOUR VEGGIE ON AT THIS YEAR’S VEGFEST SCOTLAND After their hugely successful 2015 event Vegfest returns to the SECC Glasgow on the 3rd and 4th of December. TSA caught up with founder Tim Barford to have a chat about the history of Vegfest, the ideas behind the vegan way of life and the changing perception of cruelty free living. SO CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE BACKGROUND AND HISTORY OF VEGFEST? WHAT WERE YOUR MAIN AIMS? We started the Vegfest in 2003 in Bristol as a good excuse for a party, and had Bez from Happy Mondays as our guest of honour... I’ve been putting on parties since back in the early 80’s, and all through the 90’s through the free party dance scene, and doing vegan events just came about as a desire in part to share the vegan knowledge, and also in part to enable some fantastic festivals, with the likes of Peter Hook, LTJ Bukem, Happy Mondays, Caravan Palace, Marshall Jefferson, Abyssinians, Roots Manuva and a whole host of top name acts over the last 15 years. WHEN DID YOU DECIDE TO EMBRACE VEGANISM YOURSELF? 1984, I was 21...it was during the Live Aid era, I made the connection between the fact that the UK was using what little land and water there was in Ethiopia that year to grow cattle fodder to put milk on your cornflakes. The price of a pint of milk was the price of a child’s life. I was already veggie since 18, which was in the main a move to piss my mum and dad off (succeeded there all right), but it was understanding the true cost of a pint of milk that year that helped wean me. The animal ethics came later...I didn’t really get Animal Rights at the time.
TO ME ‘VEGAN’ IS A VERY FLUID WORD AT THE MOMENT – DO YOU AGREE? DO YOU THINK IT NEEDS A STRICT DEFINITION? IS IT JUST ABOUT WHAT WE EAT OR SHOULD IT BE BROADER THAN THAT? On a scale of one to ten, how strong do I disagree with your statement? 10 out of 10! It’s important to remember that veganism is a philosophy of non-violence that also includes animals, that came out of the 2nd world war, when Dorothy and Donald Watson founded the Vegan Society and coined the word ‘vegan’. In 1950, the definition of the word was agreed by The Vegan Society. ‘’The word ‘veganism’ denotes a philosophy or way of living that seeks to exclude – wherever practical or possible – all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose’’. So veganism is not just a diet, or a lifestyle choice, although these are important areas of course, but it’s a whole way of life, based on non violence to anyone alive on this planet. There isn’t such a thing as ‘veganish’ or ‘80% vegan’ – these would be referred to as ‘plant based’ in various degrees – but vegan means something different – it’s a way of life where you choose not to use animals in any way shape or form wherever you can. It’s a far reaching and powerful vision and concept, and one that will take us through the 21st century by solving multiple problems on multiple levels. So no – it’s not ‘’flexible’’ – it’s about justice, and if you use animals in any way, through choice, then you are not giving those animals any kind of justice. So a ‘little drop of milk’ now and again is just about as far removed from veganism as you can get. That’s not to say we should reject or judge others on this, whether we

are ‘pure’ or ‘perfect’ or ‘level 23’ vegans or something….. – but it is to say what veganism truly means, and then do our best to try and live by that. VEGANISM HAS MADE GREAT STRIDES IN THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS AND HAS BECOME PART OF THE MAINSTREAM. WHAT’S YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS, WHY NOW? We did some feedback on this, and the main reason cited was availability of vegan products...there’s a massive explosion of this right now, with supermarkets bringing in new vegan ranges on a weekly basis. Added to that the explosion of vegan events across the UK, making it really easy for folk to try all the vegan options, and of course the growth of social media and information generally...it’s awesome. DOES REDUCTIONISM HAVE A ROLE OR IS THAT A BLIND ALLEY? When you consider veganism as a matter of justice – which it is – then ask yourself how you would consider a ‘reduction’ in sexual harassment in the work place? Or a ‘reduction’ in bullying at school. Or a ‘reduction’ in stealing from others. Or a ‘reduction’ in hate crimes. Obviously ‘less’ is better than ‘more’ and of course ‘reduction’ of consumption of animal products is better than ‘increase’, but surely we should be clear that we should be stopping something altogether if we deem it to be morally unacceptable, not just doing ‘less’ of it. Killing animals for no good reason is morally unacceptable, as is the whole meat dairy fish and egg trade. They are a gross breach of justice for living beings – our most vulnerable members of the global community in many respects, that we should
be protecting, not exterminating. Look how we abuse them. 70 billion killed for food alone last year. So no...promoting ‘reduction’ makes little sense. We should promote the end of the use of animals, by helping people go vegan. How will we ever change the current status quo, and end the abuse of animals if we don’t even promote just that? People are hungry for justice too, and in part fuelled by Corbyn, Hillsborough and The Chilcott Enquiry. This country is ready for justice for animals. DO YOU THINK GOVERNMENT HAS A ROLE IN CHANGING PERCEPTIONS? Not a lot. But they could do. They could cut their subsidies for dairy and meat and increase their subsidies for healthy sustainable crops that are good for farmers, good for people, good for animals, good for the environment and good for the economy. It really isn’t rocket science. HOW DO YOU SEE THE PERCEPTION OF ANIMAL USE/CRUELTY CHANGING IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS? WHAT ARE THE HURDLES YOU ANTICIPATE? By 2020, the UK will have gone vegan as mainstream way of life. That’s what I think. The way its growing, its unstoppable. But 2 things are important...1) don’t let the incredible far reaching concept of veganism as a philosophy get watered down to a diet that allows for ‘a bit of abuse now and again’...and 2) as a consumer, demand wholefood unprocessed natural vegan options, and don’t let the big food manufacturers move in on the vegan thing and poison us all with ultra processed unhealthy carcinogenic vegan options. That’s a real threat.

EDINBURGH’S HOGMANAY ANNOUNCE FULL LINE UP AND PROGRAMME OF EVENTS FOR THREE DAY FESTIVAL 2016/17
Hop on hop off service Starts at George Square 21 Tourist attractions around the city OCTOBER ONLY
£2off student ticket
Opening Hours : 10-6 Mon-Sat, 10-4 Sun 2355 Dumbarton Road, G14 0NN 0141 959 4852
Known globally as the ‘Home of Hogmanay’, Edinburgh is a destination most of us dream of spending New Year in at least once in our lives and whilst the celebrations at the UK’s largest outdoor winter music festival typically welcome over 150,000 visitors from over 80 countries to our capital, we’re lucky enough to have it all on our doorsteps. The Hogmanay events, which bring an estimated economic benefit of over £40 million to the city, will launch a year of further celebrations to mark the 70th anniversary of Edinburgh becoming the world’s leading Festival city, begin on 30 December with the family-friendly Torchlight Procession. Over 30,000 participants, including 10,000 torchbearers, will wind their way through Edinburgh’s streets from the Old Town towards the fireworks finale on Calton Hill which can be viewed from across the city. The celebrations continue on 31 December with Paolo Nutini headlining the flagship Concert in the Gardens. The performance is Paolo’s only festival gig of 2016, he said: “When they offered us the gig, I was made up, as it was 10 years ago that we had shown up at the castle, lined up to play alongside the Pet Shop Boys and unfortunately it was a washout, forcing the powers that be to cancel. “We went back as a three piece in ‘08 to play a small set before legging it to Glasgow for George Square but this now gives us a chance to make up for lost gigs. We had no plans for any shows this year after Wales but this was the only one that over the years I hoped that we would get another shot at. Edinburgh is electric at that time of year and I’m glad we get a chance to be a part of it. Let’s dance ladies and gentlemen.” The seven open air stages in the centre of the city are expected to be attended by 75,000 revellers for one hell of a party. Music legends The Charlatans will headline the Waverley Stage. Ahead of their hit-packet set, Tim Burgess said: “Nowhere in the world sees in the New Year like Scotland. I’ve been to Edinburgh before for Hogmanay and it’s always brilliant. Looking forward to another big night.” The Castle Stage will feature performances from leading Scottish Celtic crossover bands Salsa Celtica , Manran and Ross Ainslie, Ali Hutton & Friends and the Frederick Stage
provides the soundtrack to the whole Street Party with a set featuring DJ’s, dancers and performers from Guilty Pleasures. The Mound Stage, programmed in collaboration with the Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival, features James Brown is Annie, Brass Gumbo and Blues n Trouble. The Candlelit Concert will take place in the magnificent setting of St Giles’ Cathedral and the record-breaking Old Town Ceilidh returns to Parliament Square with two live open air stages featuring the best in traditional Scottish music. The main Ceilidh Stage features performances from Kilter and HotScotch and ‘Ceilidh Makers’ will be on hand to make sure everyone knows the moves. The smaller stage features the very best in young Scottish musicians, including the award-winning Talisk, Top Floor Taivers and musicians from Feis Rois. All stages are live from 9.00pm to 1.00am but the party starts from 7.00pm throughout the Street Party arena. Countdown fireworks displays will begin on the hour from 9.00pm, with the most spectacular fireworks then rising from the ramparts of Edinburgh Castle to mark midnight, followed by the world’s largest rendition of Auld Lang Syne. After the bells, Lothian Buses will once again be providing free Hogmanay NightBus services for revellers. The official transport provider is supported by Diageo and last year helped over 18,000 people get home safely. Those brave folk who love to celebrate the New Year with a dip in our freezing Scottish waters will be able to indulge on 1 January with a dip in the River Forth at South Queensferry. The ‘Stoats Loony Dook’ will see 1,250 ‘dookers’ in fancy dress taking the plunge, watched by thousands of spectators. The Hogmanay celebrations are plentiful this year and the Final Fling brings it all to an end with the closing ceilidh taking place at 5.30pm at the National Museum of Scotland on 1 January. Tickets for Concert in the Gardens, the world famous Street Party, The Old Town Ceilidh, pre-booked Torches and wristbands for the Torchlight Procession and registration for the Loony Dook, went on general sale on 30 September, tickets available via www. edinburghshogmanay.com or call the Hogmanay box office on 0844 573 8455.

HALLOWEEN SPECIAL
CONDEMNED For centuries we have been curiously fascinated by ‘the other side’ but paradoxically afraid of what may be beyond. The lives of those who have cavorted with the devil are often cut short or hidden in the shadows and mystery has engulfed their stories... until now! Join The Real Mary King’s Close for Condemned, a brand new late night tour experience for Halloween. Condemned offers a unique insight into Edinburgh’s tumultuous yet fascinating past with witches and witchcraft telling the stories of its infamous accomplices and most ardent opponents.
Join a guide and travel back to a time when Mary King’s Close was open to the skies and fear and suspicion lingered around every corner; herbal medicinal therapies were considered to be witchcraft and being different was a crime. Hear how the inhabitants of Mary King’s Close and the surrounding streets were implicated in such crimes and the fate that befell them. This dramatic interpretation of Edinburgh’s volatile past with witches will challenge perceptions and go beyond what we believe to be true. Will you dare to cross the threshold and confront the unknown? Condemned will run from 27-30 October at 9pm and admission is £17.50 .
THINGS TO DO
MERCAT TOURS – MOST HAUNTED HALLOWEEN Mercat are holding an exclusive Halloween tour through Edinburgh’s Old Town, so you better prepare for a scare in the Blair Street Underground Vaults. On your journey you’ll learn the most unsavoury tales of Edinburgh’s former residents, and hear about the documented sightings of the vault’s most infamous ghosts. This Halloween adventure is not for the faint hearted though, as Mercat warn visitors any lingering shadow, figure or sound in the underground chambers is very real. And if that isn’t quite scary enough, you will even get the unique opportunity to walk the vaults alone. This is one tour which is guaranteed to leave you chilled to the bone!
THE EDINBURGH DUNGEONS – THE HOME OF HALLOWEEN Its official…Burke is back! Edinburgh’s most murderous residents, Burke and Hare, return to the Edinburgh Dungeons this Halloween. Join them in devious Dr Knox’s Anatomy Theatre to find out the gruesome details of their last murder on Halloween in 1823. Not only will you get to meet Burke and Hare, but you’ll also have the opportunity to see many of the other historical villains and rogues of Scotland’s past, including Sawney Bean and his cave dwelling cannibalistic family. After you’re spooktacular meetings, you’ll be invited to take a seat on the Dungeon’s two thrilling rides.
GEEK OUT Fancy something a bit different? Filling the entire Highland Hall at The Royal Highland Centre, Edinburgh it promises to bring together everything from cosplay, anime, manga, sci fi, horror, comics, retro gaming and more to the one venue over the Halloween weekend of October 29 and 30 2016. OCTOBER 2016, ISSUE 26
WONDER WOMAN Wonder Woman has forever been a perennial Halloween favourite! And with the release of Batman v Superman earlier this year, this has surely driven up interest! You can count on seeing a few Wonder Woman about town.
Every year the best Halloween costumes are inspired by the year’s most memorable moments, and 2016 has been nothing if not memorable. We’ve had the Summer Olympics and a US presidential election, which dominate headlines (and Facebook timelines!) every four years. Throw in a masterpiece visual album from Beyoncé, the hype surrounding Pokémon Go, and the candy-coloured, quotable craziness of Suicide Squad, and 2016 is basically begging for a Halloween costume bonanza. So here at TSA we have put together a collage of what we think will be the ‘Top Costume Trends That Will Dominate Halloween This Year’.
FEMALE GHOSTBUSTERS The female-led reboot helped revive the classic franchise, and now both boys and girls can prove they ain’t afraid of no ghosts.
BATMAN v SUPERMAN Batman has always been a popular choice for Halloween and this year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, kept the caped crusader in the spotlight for that little while longer. Get one of your friends to go as Superman, for an all out battle royale show down.
HARLEY QUINN & THE JOKER The most popular costume trend this year – according to Google Trends – is Harley Quinn from the 2016 movie blockbuster, Suicide Squad. The on and off girlfriend of the Joker has been on our screens since 1992, but it this year her popularity surged. If you’re going out as a duo this year, why not get your other half to dress as the Joker?
BEYONCE “LEMONADE” DONALD TRUMP Data from Google Trends revealed the controversial Republican candidate topped the trending list, meaning there’s a high chance there will be a lot of Trump lookalikes walking around on October 31st.
This year Beyonce blessed us with her latest album Lemonade topping charts and prompting important cultural conversations. But aside from the political messages, we also noticed her kick ass outfits. The one she rocked ‘Hold Up’ in, we knew it would be an instant Halloween favourite this year.

ENTERTAINMENT
SCARIEST VIDEO GAMES
OF ALL TIME SILENT HILL 2 Let’s start things off with a PS2 classic that has stood the test of time. Despite the series having several hit or miss sequels as well as having its own abysmal big screen adaptation; Konami’s sophomore effort was its pinnacle, managing to combine great storytelling with even better character design. As you find yourself walking anxiously through the titular town as James Sunderland, arriving there in search of his deceased wife, you’ll find yourself dreading every step through the mist infested location. Featuring undoubtedly one of the creepiest videogame villains of all time in the form of Pyramid Head, no need to imagine he’s exactly what you think he looks like, as well as some devilishly tricky puzzles, it’s ironic how much you’ll love spending time in a town full of such horrors.
I HAVE NO MOUTH, AND I MUST SCREAM While by no means recent, having been released back in 1995 almost 30 years after the short story that it is based on was
While horror films are all well and good at sending shivers down your spine, there’s a certain edge video-games have always had over them: interactivity. When you’re watching a movie and it’s all getting too much, just covering your eyes with your hand is enough to help make you feel somewhat safe. Pick up a controller and stick on a horror game however and you’ve got no other option but to traverse and encounter whatever hellish environments and creatures it has to throw at you, less you find yourself stuck in the same place for all eternity. What follows is a list of games that not only gives Hollywood a run for its money but solidifies gaming as the one stop shop for proper horrifying entertainment: readers beware, you’re in for a scare.
published, I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream manages to create fear in the same way shows like The Twilight Zone mastered all those years ago. Following the tale of the last five humans on earth being punished by a self-aware super computer, the horrific torture and subsequent attempt to escape manages to flood with dread from every pore. Touching on subjects like rape, insanity, paranoia and genocide, the evil and good choices you are able to make adds another layer of horror to this already petrifying old school gem.
DEAD SPACE In space no-one can hear you scream though anyone unfortunate to be living with you will once you play Dead Space. Set in, surprise surprise, space, you take on the role of ship’s engineer Isaac Clarke who is sent in to investigate a distress signal on the USG Ishimura with his crew. As things go to shit from 0-100, you’re left to fight your way through the ship against some of the most ghastly monsters you’ll ever come across, who have a nice tendency to
rip your limbs off, as well as finding audio logs along the way that shed light on the dark and menacing history of the Ishimura prior to your arrival. Developed by Visceral Games, the death animations are aptly gory and will be sure to etch themselves into your nightmares, as will every waking second the decent sized campaign will offer.
BIOSHOCK Going now from the heights of space to the deep trenches of the sea, Bioshock starts off mysterious and never stops making you second guess. Taking place in the underwater city of Rapture, you find yourself arriving a bit late to the party as everything has, to put it simply, gone to shit. The once prosperous utopia has become a grizzly bloodbath with the inhabitants becoming deranged and you unfortunately finding yourself in their way. Despite being granted superhuman abilities thanks to ADAM, a substance which scattered audio logs will inform you about, you never feel truly safe in Rapture, especially not after your first encounter with a Big Daddy. A huge hulking
creature with a massive drill for an arm, you can either build up the courage to fight or, sensibly, flee. Crying while doing so is optional but recommended.
UNTIL DAWN To finish things off we have a 2015 surprise hit going by the name of Until Dawn. Essentially a ‘choose your adventure’ style game but with a horror twist, Until Dawn is full of all the tropes and clichés you’ve come to love from your favourite slasher films which all manage to cross the line between tribute and knock off. With every choice you make affecting the chemistry between characters, all tremendously performed by some top class actors such as Mr Robot’s Rami Malek, you can very well end up finishing the game with every character six feet under. Quick reaction times, good intuition and a lot of courage is what will help you conquer what these snow drenched mountains are packing. by Liam Menzies Twitter:

5 SPOOKTACULAR MOVIES TO WATCH THIS HALLOWEEN SEASON
Halloween is just around the corner, the night where the veil which separates the worlds of the living and the dead is torn; when demons walk the earth, ghouls come out to play, spirits return to the land of the living, witches form in their covens and Sugar Cube fills up with a swarm of Harley Quinn’s. But for horror aficionados, the month of October is a special time of the year, more akin to a holiday or special event, like Christmas or the OId Firm. There’s just something about this period that makes the experience of watching a horror film even more exhilarating, and as someone who’s spent a lifetime watching horror over dating and socialising, I’ve managed to see my fair share throughout the years. Therefore, I’ve selected five which should appeal to different moods and tastes, but also encapsulate the atmosphere of the dark, cold autumn nights. by Kieran Fisher Twitter:
@HairEverywhere_
TRICK ‘R TREAT (2007) Trick ‘r Treat is the quintessential film to watch on Halloween night, especially if you’re the type who prefers the holiday’s pagan traditions and supernatural hocus pocus over modern, party-centric commercialism. It’s an anthology film which takes place on All Hallows Eve in a small suburban neighbourhood. There are five interconnected stories inspired by authentic Halloween lore, and it has a throwback feel reminiscent of the halcyon days of 80’s horror anthologies like Creepshow. Not only is this one of the best horror films to watch on Halloween, it’s one of the best horror films of this century so far.
HOUSE OF THE DEVIL (2009) During the 1980’s, America was a country undergoing a cultural epidemic perpetuated by evangelists, the media and law enforcement known as ‘Satanic panic.’ It was widely believed that Satanic cults were on the rise and committing ritualistic atrocities across the country. Despite it
k.fisher@tsaglasgow.com
turning out to be a load of tosh, it still instilled the fear of a national network of devil worshippers in many people, and as such, horror movies capitalised on it. 2009’s House of the Devil is an homage to that period in American history, along with the horror movies that were born during it. The story sees a babysitter in peril after accepting a job at a house in the middle of nowhere; little does she know that she’s embroiled in a plan that’s wickedly devilish, unholy and sinister. However, it is a slow film – one which opts to build tension as opposed to action set-pieces and gore. If you want a movie with the same concept but more visceral thrills, then check out Babysitter Wanted (2008).
HALLOWEEN III: SEASON OF THE WITCH (1982) John Carpenter’s Halloween (1979) is arguably the most beloved horror film of all time. It made the slasher subgenre a phenomenon going into the 1980’s and
introduced us to the iconic Michael Myers, whose slayings on Halloween night became a recurring event in the subsequent sequels. However, there is one sequel which doesn’t include Myers, and it’s the vastly underrated Season of the Witch. The story focuses on an investigation into the mysterious owner of a toy company in the week approaching Halloween night, abandoning slasher tropes in favour of the occult and old Celtic fairytales. It’s a misplaced entry in the seminal franchise, but as a horror film on its own terms, it’s absolutely perfect Halloween viewing.
SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES (1983) Based on the novel of the same name by Ray Bradbury, Something Wicked This Way Comes is perfect Halloween viewing for the whole family – but just because it’s child friendly, that doesn’t mean to say it won’t cause nightmares even for adults. The film is also a Disney production, made during
a time where they were trying to break free from the stereotype of only making animated family movies. It was during this period where they also produced the dark Wizard of Oz sequel, Return to Oz. However, Something Wicked This Way Comes is their crowning achievement; a haunting marvel of spook tale, with a carinvalesque atmosphere, dead leaves and damned souls everywhere.
KILL LIST (2011) When it comes to sheer unnerving horror fare, they don’t come much better than Ben Wheatley’s Kill List. The High Rise director’s sophomore feature is a tour de force of terror which sees two strapped-for-cash hitmen enter the heart of darkness after accepting a seemingly routine assignment. The less said about Kill List the better; go into as blind as possible and just let it have its way with you. It’s intense, ambiguous and the threat of violence is tangible in every frame – and when it reaches its apex, your jaw will hit the floor. In this writer’s humble opinion, it’s the best film of all time.

TOP SCARIEST STORIES FOR HALLOWEEN Your Pinterest board agrees that autumnal shades, cooler temperatures, hot drinks and cosy knitwear are the primary components of the ideal reading scene. With Halloween fast approaching, we have devised a list of terrifically terrifying reads to get you in the zone this October. Warning: darker nights are soon to follow – read with caution!
THE WOMAN IN BLACK, SUSAN HILL Arthur Kipps, a junior solicitor, is sent to settle the affairs of Alice Drablow. At her funeral, he sees a woman dressed in black that no-one else does. He opts to stay at her house in order to sort through her paperwork quickly – the risk being that at six o’clock every evening the path which takes you across the causeway to her house is consumed by a thick, impossible-to-navigate marsh. Eel Marsh House is haunted by noises and sightings of the woman. In the morning, a local man finally reveals the legend of Alice Drablow’s sister who apparently haunts the house: he explains that a child dies each time the woman in black in seen…
THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW, WASHINTON IRVING The story is set in 1790 in a secluded glen called Sleepy Hollow – a location renowned for its ghosts and the haunting atmosphere that follows the inhabitants and its visitors. The most infamous appearance in the Hollow is the Headless Horseman, said to be the ghost of a Hessian trooper that had his head shot off by a stray cannonball in the American Revolutionary War. Ichabod Crane rides home furiously through the glen after failing to secure the hand of Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter of a wealthy farmer. The following day, Ichabod has mysteriously vanished from town with only a discarded hat and trampled saddle being the only relics of his flight.

Discover Stevenson’s prolific exploration into the duality of man, set in the dingy streets of 19th Century Soho.
IT, STEPHEN KING Stephen King’s ultimate horror novel follows the exploits of seven children as they are terrorized by the eponymous being. The eponymous being exploits the fears and phobias of its victims in a bid to disguise itself while hunting its prey. And, word of caution, “it” primarily appears in the form of a clown in order to attract its preferred prey of young children. Just throwing that out there.
A FAMILY SUPPER, KAZUO ISHIGURO A man has returned home to Tokyo to visit his father and sister following the recent collapse of his father’s business. Tensions are running high, and it immediately becomes apparent that neither the narrator nor his sister possess the need to be close to their father anymore. In a bid to reinstate the importance of family, the narrator’s father prepares a family supper for them, one of which just happens to be Fugu fish – a dish that, if not prepared with the upmost caution, is potentially deadly.

Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic horror story is sure to live with you long after reading. Immerse yourself inside the twisted mind of Mr. Utterson, a lawyer closely involved with a Henry Jekyll

SCOTLAND REALLY DOES LOVE ANIME Scotland Loves Anime film festival returns for a seventh year in October, bringing with it the best of Japanese anime to Scotland. With a mix of classic films, films fresh out of Japan, guest speakers, a jury and audience award as well as an education day aimed at students of animation – there’s something for everyone in the latest edition of the festival. Film highlights includes the new film from friend of the festival, Makoto Shinkai, Your Name, which is also the first animated film to ever hit competition at the London Film Festival and is currently a storming success at the Japanese box office; A Silent Voice which will be here only a month after it opens in Japan; Kingsglaive – Final Fantasy XV which will be one of the only chances to catch the film on the big screen in the UK; and digitally
restored to 2K (thanks to Andrew Partridge, Director of Scotland Loves Anime) Momotaro, Sacred Sailors, the UK premiere of the wartime animated film that inspired Osamu Tezuka, creator of Astroboy, to become an animator. Scotland Loves Anime wouldn’t be the same without amazing guests. This year Glasgow is proud to welcome the very talented animator Yoshimi Itazu whose first directorial work Pigtails will screen in the festival followed by a Q&A with the director. The Edinburgh guest schedule is rather special this year with producer Kohei Kawase from Warner (a man with his own radio talk show in Japan no less) arriving for the festival weekend. Another very exciting guest is famed director Naoyoshi Shiotani of Psycho-Pass and Blood-C The Last Dark fame coming in early November (creating an extension of Scotland Loves

Long time festival supporter, Jonathan Clements will also return to present the films at both festivals and will host all talk/Q&A sessions. There will also be the Judge’s Award category in which industry guests select the best of the festival; an Education Day hosted by Edinburgh College of Art with industry experts discussing all aspects of anime. HEALTH AND WELLBEING
Health & Wellbeing With the inevitable craziness and chaos of Freshers week it’s easy to forget to actually take proper care of yourself. You know what we’re talking about; the excessive drink, the takeaways, the hangover induced sloth-like behaviour, questionable hygiene and even more questionable living conditions – seriously that sink is horrendous, get those dishes done! However, the constant party that is Freshers is now over and life should be settling down so it’s time, if you’ve not already done so, to get all of the important stuff sorted. In the excitement of starting university and moving to halls there’s probably plenty that you forgot about. Have you made a note of the emergency dentist number? Have you registered with a new local GP? Do you know the closest place for the morning after pill? Do you know where to get tested for STIs? Sorry, we know this is all of the boring stuff but it’s important and the sooner it’s out the way the better, you don’t want to be frantically searching for the emergency dentist’s number after cracking a tooth on the way home, it’s not a fun situation, believe us. Luckily, we’ve done all the hard work for you, so here are some of the key points to consider when it comes to your health and wellbeing. By Courtney Hendry
NEW TO
DENTISTS
There are plenty of dentists around the city and whilst you can pop your postcode into the NHS24 website again to find your nearest, it’s worth investigating those around you. Some will offer treatments such as free teeth whitening for new patients. If you’re living in Glasgow and not yet registered with a dentist and an emergency situation occurs, keep in mind we do mean an emergency, you can call the dental hospital for an emergency appointment during the day on 0141 232 6323 or if you have an out of hours dental emergency, phone the NHS24, who will be able to assess your situation and refer you for treatment, on 08454 24 24 24. If you’re living in Edinburgh and not yet registered with a dentist you can visit the ‘Walk-in’ dental service at Chalmers Dental Centre on Chalmers Street, for ‘same-day’ care attend before 3pm. However, if an out of hours dental emergency occurs contact the Lothian Dental Advice Line on 0131 536 4800, they can advise and direct you on the closest out of hours treatment facility.
Affected by Type 1 diabetes? Living with Type 1 diabetes? If you’re aged 16-25 and living with Type 1 diabetes, it might sometimes feel like you’re the only one. The condition is 24/7, 365 days a year and you don’t get a day off – even when you’re on holiday. It can be exhausting – practically, physically and emotionally and it’s understandable to feel overwhelmed and frustrated at times. You’re trying your best to get on with life – studying, working, having fun with friends – and you have to manage your Type 1 diabetes on top of everything else! It can help to speak to other people who know exactly what you’re going through.
The Type 1 and Young (16-25) Diabetes Scotland Facebook Group is a closed group where young people aged 16-25 who are living with the condition across Scotland can speak to each other and get support. This is not a place for clinical guidance but for reassurance and tips on managing Type 1 diabetes and not letting the condition stop you from living the life you want. The group offers a friendly and suppor tive community where everyone is treated respectfully and as equals. Open discussions are encouraged so people can raise the issues that are affecting them and find out what others think.
The group is managed by volunteer administrators suppor ted by Diabetes Scotland. The administrators are trained young people with Type 1 diabetes. To join the closed group search Facebook for: Type 1 and Young (16-25) – Diabetes Scotland In addition to the Facebook Group, you can also access JUSTDUK1T.org.uk – a website for young people with Type 1 diabetes by young people with Type 1 diabetes. This site has lots of information on living with the condition and, because it has been created by young people with support from Diabetes Scotland, it covers all the topics that are of most interest: • • • • • • •

THE CITY? SEXUAL HEALTH
Let’s be honest, we all experiment to some degree at university and that’s fine – as long as you’re being safe. If you’re living, working or studying in the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde area you can pick up free condoms from over 300 venues including GP practices, chemists, colleges/universities, bars and clubs, housing services and many others. You can find your closest venue with free condoms at www. freecondomsglasgowandclyde.org. If you’re living, studying or working in Edinburgh or the Lothians, make use of the C:Card for free condoms. You’ll need to register for the free card by locating your nearest C:Card point on the website (www.ccard.org.uk) then you can simply show your card at one of their many partner agencies to collect free condoms and other safer sex products on the C:Card range. Although we all try our best to remain safe and protected, things do sometimes happen unexpectedly and if you’re concerned about possibly having an STI you can head to the Sexual Health Clinic in Edinburgh on Chalmers Street for STI testing and advice about a range of sexual health issues or Sandyford Central on Sandyford Street for the same services in Glasgow. You can also obtain emergency contraceptive from either of these clinics for free.
DOCTORS/A&E Chances are when you moved into your new accommodation, the accommodation office offered the chance to register with a local doctor. However, if you’ve missed this chat you can head over to the NHS24 website and enter your new postcode to find out the closest GP to you. Some GP surgeries will ask to see proof of your identity and address when registering, so keep that in mind and take along ID and a recent bill or your rental agreement letter. Minor health issues often crop up outwith GP hours and a great service to make use of is the NHS Minor Ailment Clinic which is available from every pharmacy in Scotland. You can speak to a pharmacist, without an appointment, about minor ailments including acne, coughs, backache, eye infections, indigestion, pain and many other minor illnesses. Emergency contraception is also offered free of charge from some pharmacies. If you require emergency treatment, out of GP office hours, the closest A&E department to Glasgow City Centre is the Glasgow Royal Infirmary on Castle Street. The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh on Old Dalkeith Road is the closest A&E department to Edinburgh City Centre however minor cuts and burns, wound infections, sprains and small bone breaks can be treated at the minor injuries clinic at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh on Poterfield Road. You can always phone the NHS24 on 111 if you’re feeling unwell or injured and looking for further advice.
KNOW SOMEONE WHO HAS TYPE 1 DIABETES? If you know someone who has diabetes but are not sure what that means, visit the Diabetes UK website for information: www.diabetes.org.uk
WHAT IS TYPE 1 DIABETES?
Type 1 diabetes is a serious, long-term condition which requires careful management every day to live well. It develops when the insulin-producing cells in the body have been destroyed and the body is unable to produce any insulin. Type 1 diabetes accounts for about 10 per cent of all adults with diabetes and is treated by daily insulin doses – taken either by injections or via an insulin pump. Type 1 diabetes can develop at any age but usually appears before the age of 40, and especially in childhood. It is not currently preventable.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING
MENINGITIS ASSOCIATION SCOTLAND Eileen McKiernan, founder of the Meningitis Association of Scotland, tells us in her own words the devastating impact meningitis had on her family and how her charity supports other families, raises awareness of the disease and how it’s aiming to help eradicate meningitis: “My family was like anyone else’s family with all the usual laughs and pitfalls that happen to us all. Until that is, one dark day Meningitis swept through our door with menacing efficiency taking with it the life of my only son Lee. Lee was almost 18 years old and he was taken ill in the ambulance taking his grandmother to the St. Margaret’s Hospice in Clydebank, so ill was he that he could not wait until she was settled but insisted on being taken home immediately. The doctor was called in and diagnosed gastro-enteritis and told us to keep Lee in bed and give him liquids. This we did, however, in the morning his condition had deteriorated so much that he was purple, and blue, hallucinating, sweating buckets. The emergency doctor was called and immediately called an ambulance to take Lee to Ruchill Hospital,
DID YOU KNOW
Young people going to university are particularly at risk of contracting Meningitis W, a particularly agressive strain of the disease, because they are more likely to stay in halls of residence and have more close contact with new students – teenagers and young people are more likely to carry meningococcal bacteria in the back of their throats. Please speak with your doctor about the ACWY vaccine, you are eligible for the vaccine if you are under 25 years old and attending university for the first time, as soon as possible if you haven’t already had it.
however, his condition deteriorated so swiftly that Lee died in the ambulance on the way to hospital.
which is still up and running and still going strong to date.
Our son was a fit, healthy young man. We always joked that germs would be afraid to go near him as he had never had a day’s illness in his life, but we were so very wrong. Meningitis brought him down in just a few hours.
At this point I decided that something more had to be done and that this situation was not good enough. If we did not know anything about meningitis, how many other families were out there as well with the same questions?
Prior to these distressing events, meningitis was just a word that you might hear on a television news bulletin, or you read about in a case in the morning newspaper. It does not concern you, so you pay no attention, until the day dawns and it comes sweeping through your own door and makes you sit up and take notice.
So I started a support group in the Glasgow area which met for the first time on the 11 March 1991. Subsequent to several group meetings, it was decided to obtain our own Charity status as we had been aware of several doctors and physicians working here in Scotland who desperately needed funding generated by our members. The Meningitis Association of Scotland was born, the first registered charity in Scotland for meningitis. We continue to support families who have had a member affected by meningitis, not only the bereaved, but the survivors for whom there is very little help or support. We attempt to help them as well.
The dreadful part of it all was that no-one gave us any information. We were left completely in the dark and just had to pick up the pieces of our shattered lives and get on with it. There are so many unanswered questions such as: “Why was my son affected and no-one else’s? Could we have done anything to prevent it?” So many questions and no answers. Lee was almost 18 years old when he died in October 1990. He would have been eighteen in the November of that year. When I read a small snippet in the local newspaper of a donation of £10 to meningitis research by the family, I thought that this was an excellent idea, and we could give the money we would have given to Lee for his birthday to research instead. The only telephone number I could get was that of the National Meningitis Trust in Stroud. When I asked where their local Scottish Office was, I was told there was not one! The only contact in Scotland for information or anything else at that time was one support group in Saltcoats,

We in the Association cannot bring our sons and daughters back, but we can and will attempt to save other families from going through the anguish and agony we have. We will continue our efforts, however small, to make sure that eventually meningitis is eradicated completely. 6 Sexual Health Myths It was World Contraception Day on 26th September and it got us thinking about sexual health, contraception, and the crazy myths/ misconceptions that are shared between peers, perpetuated by elders, or enforced by communities. Plan International UK created a quiz with myths surrounding contraception from around the world, and some of the answers are quite surprising – can you tell the fact from the fiction? Some of the answers we nailed, while others not so much, so in the spirit of myth-busting, we’ve pulled together 6 sexual health fictions that we feel need to be debunked. Try the quiz out at ww.plan-uk.org/blogs/ contraception-myths.
1. You can’t get a sexually transmitted infection from oral sex –STIs can be transmitted by oral sex. For example, if you have a cold sore (oral herpes), you can pass this on to your partner, giving them genital herpes.
2. You can get an STI from a toilet seat – This is not true. STIs are transmitted by having sex (including anal and oral), and skin-to-skin contact.
3. Wearing two condoms provides more protection – This is a myth and may even have the opposite effect. Wearing two condoms can actually increase the risk of them breaking. If used correctly, a condom (used once) should be 95% (female) and 98% (male) effective against pregnancy.
4. Condoms are too small/cause an allergy – Condoms are designed to stretch to fit any size. If it feels too small or your partner says it doesn’t fit, there are different sizes and brands to suit your/his preference – not wearing a condom will put you or your partner at risk of transmitting an STI. Those allergic to latex can buy latex-free condoms.
5. No symptoms, no STI – Not all STIs will present with symptoms. This can be very harmful as an untreated STI can have serious complications, which are much harder to treat than in the early stages. If you have unprotected sex with a new partner, you should always go for testing.
6. Condoms make sex unenjoyable and can cause premature ejaculation – It’s not true that condoms constrict an erect penis, causing an early climax. If decreased sensation is a problem when using a condom, try a textured or ultrathin condom as well as lubrication to improve sensation. These common sexual health myths could be potentially harmful if you’re not correctly protecting yourself. Practicing safe sex and making sure you can spot the truths from the lies is important when approaching your sexual health, especially if you’re with a new sexual partner. Don’t forget to test your knowledge on some of the contraception myths circulating the world today!

“ LAST TIME WE PLAYED IN GLASGOW WE PLAYED AT THE ARCHES, AND IT WAS AWESOME!...
“THE ENERGY IN GLASGOW FOR MUSIC AND PARTYING IS UNLIKE ANYWHERE WE HAVE EVER BEEN”
33
OCTOBER 2016, ISSUE 26
QUICK FIRE ROUND WITH:
The American EDM DJ duo, Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall formed ‘The Chainsmokers’ in 2012. The New Yorkers achieved breakthrough success with their hit single “#Selfie” in 2014 as the single made it into the charts internationally and on the Dance/Electronic Songs chart. With the official music video gaining over 350 million views, they took the world by storm. Their debut EP, Bouquet, was released in October 2015. Singles such as ‘Roses’ and ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ made top-ten singles across the world, while ‘Closer’ featuring Halsey, became the duo’s very first number one single on the Billboard’s Hot 100 and made it to number one in the UK, remaining in the top place for six weeks. Their signature sound has its base in Indie, Progressive and Pop Music. Their tracks have featuring vocals from Halsey, Daya, Rozes, Great Good Fine Ok, Charlee and SirenXX. The Chainsmokers have become one of the hottest young American EDM DJ duo. They always put on an incredible show.
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT PLAYING IN GLASGOW? Last time we played in Glasgow we played at the Arches, and it was awesome – the energy in Glasgow for music and partying is unlike anywhere we have ever been. They chanted ‘here we, here we’ over and over again. And honestly it was one of the most fun shows we have ever played. So we are really pumped to go back and have another one.
DO YOU DO ANYTHING TO PREPARE YOURSELF ON TOUR? We play a lot of shows all year long and all over the place so we are pretty ready to go whenever we play because it’s something we do a lot. When we are in Europe we like to change our set up a little bit like based around what is popular in Europe at the time. That takes a couple of days.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT BEING IN GLASGOW? We have only been there once and that was only for a day, so we haven’t really had a chance to explore much. I love the football culture, I played football in high school and in Europe especially Glasgow the culture for sports is very intense, so we think that this is really cool. We would love to catch a football game or something.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TRACK TO PLAY LIVE? Right now ‘Closer’ its just fun playing
They are becoming the most sought after in dance music, selling out venues across the globe. Their crazy antics, hilarious personalities, and addictive productions have fans rushing to see them live every chance they get. The Chainsmokers are praised by fans all over the world and other iconic musicians. Online music publication, ‘Earmilk’, have raved about how the duo “seamlessly blends pop, indie, dance, and trap together to create a sound unique and indicative of their brand.” Justin Bieber declared himself a fan when he said previous single ‘Roses’ was his favourite track of the moment, uploaded a video to Instagram of him singing along to it and then performed on stage with the band at one of their shows. Their tour has taken them from the states right across the world, and it isn’t over yet. Performing in many countries and at immense events like the X-games, they will travel across Europe to the Netherlands,
the newer song hearing everyone sing along to them but each one does have a special place in our heart.
LOOKING BACK TO WHEN YOU FIRST STARTED, COULD YOU EVER IMAGINE YOURSELF WHERE YOU ARE TODAY? Not really. You know, Drew and I want to work in the music business and have an impact and make great music and play awesome shows but we never really imagined what it is going to be like. We are really grateful to be where we are right now and hopefully we will keep working super hard and stay here doing exciting things. You can never prepare for this sort of thing.
HOW DOES IT FEEL TO HAVE A NUMBERONE SINGLE ON BOTH THE BILLBOARD HOT 100 AND IN THE UK CHARTS? Unbelievable. It is something we have never done before and we know how big a deal it is so we are honoured to have something like that. So that sort of thing just makes us want to work even harder, it gets us really pumped up and we want to make more music and do it again, we know it’s not easy and we are super grateful.
WHERE DID THE ALBUM NAME BOUQUET COME FROM? That whole thing came together almost accidentally, we were just putting out singles and then by the fourth single we were like, we should probably put this together as an EP and since ‘Roses’ was the most popular song on the EP,
THE CHAINSMOKERS WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON EARTH? New York city WHAT WAS THE LAST FILM YOU SAW? The Secret Life of Pets, it was cute. ASKING QUESTIONS OR ANSWERING QUESTIONS? Asking questions, I think that a lot of people don’t like talking about themselves and people learn so much more asking questions, so we are really big on doing that.
Sweden and many more stops. Dates for next year have already been announced and they will be returning to the UK in February playing in the Edinburgh Corn Exchange. Leading up to their sold out gig in Glasgow, at the O2 ABC, we spoke to Alex, to find out what to expect when they are here in October.
we kind of imagined each song like an individual flower and then we thought like a bouquet of songs, we thought it was clever.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELVES IN 5 YEARS? Hopefully not dead! We are really excited for the next year with music and we really want to keep innovating with our shows and making our music more personal. I mean 5 years, we have only been together for 4 years so I am imagining what we have done in the last 4 years plus 1 year and it is really hard to imagine but hopefully just happy, healthy doing what we love, the same old nerdy dudes hanging out.
WHERE ARE YOU RIGHT NOW? We moved from New York about a year ago and now we are living in Los Angeles. It’s pretty chill here and it’s always sunny; I know you guys don’t know a lot about that.
DO YOU HAVE A MUSIC IDOL YOU LOOK UP TO? There are so many, some of the names that really inspire us right now are people like Bon Iver, Chris Martin, Coldplay, Kanye West, U2. There are so many bands that we are inspired by in different ways.

SCHNARFF SCHNARFF LAUNCH DEBUT ALBUM It’s been 3 years since Schnarff Schnarff’s debut supporting SKATERS at King Tut’s and in a nicely circular move they’ve just launched their debut album at the same iconic venue. We had a quick chat with guitarist Andrew ‘Turtle’ MacLean in the midst of their preparations for the night. TSA. ENJOYING THE ALBUM, CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT IT’S BACKGROUND? AM. Electric Honey picked up on a video that we’d put together and got in touch saying that they’d take us on and work with us to put out an EP. So that lasted for a couple of years and it was the kind of deal where they helped us boost out profile over that time. Really good label as well – Biffy Clyro went with them, Snow Patrol, Belle and Sebastian – all these names. So when the two year program with Electric Honey finished we went into the studio and recorded five tracks and then earlier this year recored another seven. So it’s been a year in the making but the band’s been going three or four years now. TSA. IT’S PRODUCED BY PAUL SAVAGE, WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING WITH HIM? AM. We’ll you know with The Delgados, Mogwai, Calvin Harris – brilliant. Really easy to work with, really chilled, no pressure. We’ve a lockup in Dalmarnock and worked on the tracks from there and then went into the studio with him where we recorded and mixed. TSA. WILL YOU BE TOURING THE ALBUM AFTER? WHAT’S YOUR PLANS FOR AUTUMN? AM. Yeah, we’ll be setting up some gig dates. We’re working with a PR company, they’re called ‘A Badge of Friendship’ so they’re dealing with the PR side of that so we’ve got a lot of exposure on blogs and magazines. Because we’re on our own, we’ve not got a label or any management deal or a booking agency to help us along with these things. So we’ve released the album and with all the press support behind it we’re going to start talking to people to further us and get some more gigs. TSA. SO THE LAUNCH NIGHT. ALL SET? GUESS YOU’VE HAD EVERYTHING SET FOR WEEKS? AM. Yeah, we’ve been smashing in the practice so we’re pretty much ready to go. It was touch and go whether we were going to get the albums in time, which we were absolutely shiting it about – you know album launch and no CDs but they came through last
week in plenty of time. We’ve a 7 inch single which we brought out earlier in the year and the album in CD format. We’ll probably be thinking about putting it out on 12 inch vinylmaybe for a record store day release next year. TSA. CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE SOUND AND THEMES ON THE ALBUM? AM. We think there’s a progression of our sound from when we did our five tracks with Electric Honey for our first EP and from when we released the other two on a single. This album has got a whole album feel to it in that you can definitely listen to it from start to finish. It’s called The Evil That We Do and that’s a lyric out of one of the songs called ‘Urrrgh’ which is one of our earliest songs. That’s really the song that when we played King Tut’s the first time, we thought well we need to try and get this recorded, we recorded it in La Chunky studios. So from recording the two tracks in there and then our mate recording the video, Electric Honey got alerted to us from that. It’s got a lot of religious and atheist themes going through it lyrically. TSA. I RECKON I CAN HEAR BLEACH IN THERE, BITS OF EARLY NIRVANA AND BIFFY. AM. Yeah I’ll take Bleach all day long. Yeah definitely Biffy and Nirvana are big influences, for me anyway playing the guitar. We’ve a broad spectrum across the band with a lot of different bands that we like. Like Idlewild, Nirvana, Brand New, Queens of the Stone Age, Soundgarden; a lot of the early kinda grungy stuff as well. It’s been good, we’ve had a lot of feedback with a lot of people saying different things and seeing a lot of different things and different influences in the album, you can hear that it’s got its own vibe to it as well. TSA. OUT OF THE LOCAL BANDS YOU’VE PLAYED WITH WHO’S STANDING OUT FOR YOU? AM. Two Glasgow bands really, The Van T’s all their tracks are very good and Sweaty Palms. Sweaty Palms are really good, definitely one to check out live. The Evil That We Do is out now on iTunes and Spotify and SCHNARFFSCHNARFF.BIGCARTEL.COM

GIGS OF THE MONTH Previews A PREVIEW OF THE TOP GIGS GLASGOW & EDINBURGH HAVE TO OFFER IN OCTOBER/NOVEMBER
JAMIE LAWSON AT THE BARROWLANDS (8/10/16) Last year, Jamie was announced as the first signing to Ed Sheeran’s own label Gingerbread Man Records. In the whirlwind that followed, Jamie toured with Ed across the world, went from playing to 150 people at London’s Barfly to supporting One Direction on their final full UK arena tour. His self-titled album, released in October 2015, reached number 1 in the UK and has sold over a quarter of a million copies
DAN WHITEHOUSE
THE VOODOO ROOMS (6/10/16) A talented songwriter and storyteller, a modern day troubadour, Dan Whitehouse was born and lives in Wolverhampton and has spent a lifetime in Britain’s industrial heartland with a brief detour along the hippie trail when his parents decided to board the magic bus to Katmandu and San Francisco in the 1970s. For Dan the songwriting is key – his observational lyrics and imagined stories are soundtracked by an original take on modern folk/ Americana – Black Country Soul if you will. You can catch Dan at The Voodoo Rooms in Edinburgh on 6 October.
SLOTH METROPOLIS BLOC (11/10/16)
TSA’s favourite storytelling, folk proggers Sloth Metropolis weave surreal satire and every day observation into a mythology they call the SLOTH CYCLE. In their own words ‘Telling the story of a sloth exploring the urban landscape of the band’s native Glasgow, modern Aristotles and Einsteins struggling with recession and alchemist idealists concocting botched utopias’. Their funny and thought provoking live show is an immersive interactive visual experience which is just as at home in city basements as the summer festivals.
LEO STANNARD
HUG & PINT IN GLASGOW (18/10/16) The past few months have been excitingly busy for Leo Stannard with the release of his respective collaborations with Black Butter label mates Kidnap Kid and Kant. Leo lent his unique vocals to ‘Moments’ and ‘Close To The Wire’ garnering recognition from Radio DJ’s across the board including Huw Stephens, Phil Taggart, B Traits, Monki, Toddla T, and Annie Nightingale. In between writing, collaborating and studio time, Leo has been gigging solo across the UK and Europe and supporting various artists on their headline tours including Rudimental, Benjamin Francis Leftwich and Nina Nesbitt.
worldwide. Furthermore, his juggernaut single ‘Wasn’t Expecting That’ has to date sold over 400k copies in the UK. Earlier this year, Jamie announced a huge 17 date autumn tour, including a date at Glasgow’s Barrowlands on October 8th. The tour in October kicks off in Dublin on the 4th, includes Brixton Academy on the 19th and rounds off at Plymouth Pavilions on the 27th.
THE BIG MOON – THE LIQUID ROOM (8/10/16) & KING TUTS (29/10/16)
You would be hard pressed not to have seen The Big Moon on a festival stage this Summer, and they’re really letting that live energy and their innate understanding of each other’s strengths shine through into the recording studio. As a follow-up to ‘Cupid’, ‘Silent Movie Susie’, is a knowing, modern-day blast of leftfield pop, all merciless of hooks and four part harmonies that back Juliette Jackson’s brazen croon, and is already a highlight of the band’s fervent live show. It sees The Big Moon taking things up a notch and time spent on the road with these songs before presenting them behind the glass has stood them in very good stead indeed.
JAMIE T
02 ACADEMY (17/10/16) Jamie T has returned with his fourth album and announced a UK tour. The singer-songwriter released his third LP Carry On The Grudge in 2014 after a five year absence from music, and followed it with the Magnolia Melancholia EP last year. Now he’s back with new record Trick which was recorded in London and Detroit. It has been described as “the kind of brave and eclectic rock/ punk/reggae/rap/pop celebration that only Jamie T could make”. Check him out at the 02 Academy on 17 October.
INME
THE GARAGE (20/10/16) InMe are an English alternative rock band who have to date released 6 highly successful studio albums, spawning a number of Top 40 UK singles and years of touring and playing great shows and festivals around the UK, Europe and the world. Over the years, the band have toured with the likes of Nickelback, Limp Bizkit, Pendulum, Deftones, Feeder and Biffy Clyro as well as having played various festival slots. This year the band released the first part of their ambitious album Trilogy – a triple album made up of three thematically distinct albums: Dawn, Sentience and Quietus.

October PICK OF THE MONTH It’s no great secret that Scotland’s music scene is a thing to be proud of. So we here at TSA have teamed up with Scotland’s very own New Hellfire Club to bring you a monthly pick of who we think are doing epically well right now. Keep your eyes out for these up and coming bands. This is TSA and New Hellfire Club’s ‘Pick of the Month’.
VELVETEEN RIOT HI THERE GUYS AND GALS, IT’S FANTASTIC TO FINALLY GET VELVETEEN RIOT ON THE POTM, WE HAVE ACTUALLY HAD YOU ON OUR NHC RADAR AS A BIG INTERVIEW CHOICE FOR SOME TIME NOW, SO LET’S GET TO IT! START US OFF THEN BY TELLING US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND THE HISTORY OF THE BAND. We’re all from Glasgow, Morven and I (Beth) met in Mono when I was playing an acoustic gig for a Girls Rock Glasgow fundraiser. After speaking we soon put out ads for bassists and drummers. We then found Max (bass) and John (drums) a few weeks later.
WE USUALLY LEAVE THE ‘WHAT’S IN A NAME’ STUFF UNTIL LATER IN THE INTERVIEW, BUT THIS TIME I’M INTRIGUED ENOUGH TO ASK PRETTY MUCH RIGHT AWAY, WHERE DID YOU GET THE NAME VELVETEEN RIOT FROM? We thought it would be cool play on the title of the classic children’s book The Velveteen Rabbit. However, we dropped the “The” after the poster for our first gig left it out by mistake because we thought it actually sounded better. So many bands have “the” in their name as well, we wanted something a bit different. We’re also big Velvet Underground fans, so we wanted something that nodded slightly towards them.
AS FAR AS SOUNDS GO, YOUR’S IS PRETTY DISTINCTIVE. TELL US A BIT ABOUT THAT. IS THE UNIQUENESS SOMETHING YOU JUST HAPPENED ON AFTER PLAYING TOGETHER FOR A WHILE (AND THEN RIGHTLY STUCK WITH!), OR IS IT SOMETHING YOU ACTIVELY SOUGHT OUT AS YOU WROTE THE SONGS DOWN? We all have very individual, distinctive tastes musically, so our sound is really just a blend of that. Everyone in the band contributes to the overall sound, John writes a lot of the music for our songs, Morven and I share lyric writing duty and Max writes all the bass parts. It all just sort of happened as we played together. TELL US ABOUT BANDS YOU LOVE YOURSELVES, I’M LOOKING AT MORE LOCAL LEVEL BANDS WHO YOU LOVE PLAYING GIGS WITH, RATHER THAN HUGE STADIUM FILLERS! IS THERE ANY THAT THE READERS SHOULD ALSO BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR, APART FROM YOURSELVES OF COURSE! Our good friends, the awesome riot grrrl duo Bratakus are definitely ones to watch! They’re so cool and always put on a good show. We also love Killer Bangs, Breakfast Muff and Joyce Delaney but the Glasgow music scene is so full and there’s loads of bands/artists I could mention but I’d be here all day!
IN PARTNERSHIP WIITH
NOW WE CAN GO ONTO THE STADIUM FILLERS! WHAT BAND OR MUSICIANS INSPIRED YOU GUYS TO GET INTO MUSIC? WAS IT AN ACTUAL WELL KNOWN ACT, OR WAS IT SOMEONE, OR SOMETHING, A LITTLE MORE INTIMATE? So many! Like I said before, collectively our music taste is so widespread and varied so this would also take all day. But some of our favourites are The Smiths, Sonic Youth, Joy Division, The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, The Strokes, The Killers, Television, Nirvana, Bikini Kill etc etc etc EVERYONE KNOWS OUR VIEWS ON DODGY PROMOTERS AND P2P SHENANIGANS, HAVE YOU GUYS EVER ENCOUNTERED ANY OF THAT IN GLASGOW WHEN OUT GIGGING? We are 100% against pay to play, and we have been approached by dodgy looking promoters before but we’ve always stayed well away! We have put on our own gigs in the past to avoid it. THE FLOOR IS NOW YOURS! WHAT EXCITING THINGS SHOULD WE BE LOOKING OUT FOR WITH YOU GUYS, ANY NEW RELEASES OR BIG GIGS ON THE WAY? Well we have a new EP recorded, and we’re very excited! It’ll be released very soon! Our next gigs are an acoustic set in Glasgow’s Britannia Panopticon on the 8th October, and a fundraiser for there in the Classic Grand on the 19th November!

It’s all about Techno

Return to Mono with Slam & Ben Sims Sub Club (14/10/16)
Ben Sim’s has been at the forefront of his profession for two decades now. An experienced DJ with energetic live shows, his funk-laden grooves are the perfect soundtrack for any night boogying on a dancefloor. The fact it’s in a party Mecca like Subby makes it even more essential if you’re into raving into the early hours like there’s no tomorrow.
Nina Kraviz
Sub Club (21/10/16) It’s another Subby night, which is becoming a bit repetitive now. But at the end of the day it’s the talent that talks and they’ve absolutely smashed it with mega star bookings this month. Nina Kraviz hasn’t officially been given the moniker “The Queen of Techno’’, but it’s a deserving title. Her live shows are absolutely phenomenal, so forget the fact it’s on a Sunday, pop along and have the night of your life and just regret it the next day.
Pressure Halloween SWG3 (28/10/16)
The Pressure Halloween party is always some laugh. Everybody dresses up and it becomes quite surreal after a while seeing grown adults in zombie attire and raving away. This year’s event will match the fun of dressing up with the thundering techno of Surgeon, the always-quality George Fitzgerald and the controversial selfproclaimed “house gangsta’’ DJ Sneak. The latter is good for the old Twitter rant, but his turntable skills are virtually unmatched. This is another cracking night which will top off a quality October.
Sidney Charles
Sub Club (20/10/16) Sidney Charles topped Resident Advisor’s Top 100 Most Charted Artists of 2013 poll, which is a testament to the consistency and quality of his musical output, which consists of house and techno with a hip hop swagger. Therefore, it’s absolutely mind boggling that this will mark his Sub Club debut. Better late than never though, eh? This is another must attend event, so if you can spare the pennies for this and Sims it’ll be worth it.
Pan-Pot
La Belle Angele (28/10/16) This month just keeps getting better, as the German gods of techno touchdown in Edinburgh to do what they do best: deliver one of the greatest clubbing experiences one could ever experience as a raver. Pan-Pot are always spectacular, both as producers and live performers. It wouldn’t be surprising if this one sells out faster than Pressure, so grab your tickets fast before they’re all gone.
Big Miz Fly Club (28/10/16) A resident of city centre basement party Offbeat which he co-founded, Chris McFarlane – aka Big Miz, of Dixon Avenue Basement Jams, who are the sound of house and raw techno in Glasgow right now – has earned his reputation for producing a magic record or two through honing his craft from a young age and fully immersing himself in the party scene to get his creative juices flowing. Drawing on classic techno and house influences he’s being welcomed with open arms to the Fly Club on 28 October for a night not to be missed.

OCTOBER 2016, ISSUE 26
WITCH HOUSE IS THE PERFECT PARTY MUSIC FOR HALLOWEEN SEASON House music is all the rage these days. The likes of Disclosure and Duke Dumont have taken it to the top of the mountain in the UK charts and plenty of other artists have followed suit, while more underground variations of the genre can be heard every weekend in the UK’s hippest clubs. Even Justin Bieber is at it these days, enlisting the likes of producers Diplo and Skrillex to provide him with some exotic beats as he croons about losing Selena Gomez. House, like all genres of music, has various branches; there are subgenres which fall under the house umbrella all with their own unique style and traits. In nightclubs, the party-centric tech house tends to be the number one choice. The post-club flat party, however, usually plays the much mellower deep house – at least until 10am when the nearest off license opens and those foolish enough to not have called it a night earlier get ready for round two and embark on their crusade for a two-day hangover. There’s also acid house, hip house, tropical house, disco house, funky house, garage crossover and commercial house. Then there’s the spellbinding kind, for the creatures of the night: Witch House. The genre was coined in 2009 as a joke by Travis Egedy, who performs under the moniker Pictureplane. In an interview with The AV Club in 2011 he said, “Myself and my friend Shams were joking about the sort of house music we make, [calling it] “witch
house’’ because it’s, like, occult-based house music. I did this best-of-the-year thing with Pitchfork about witch house. I was saying that we were witch house bands, and 2010 was going to be the year of witch house. It took off from there. But, at the time, when I said witch house, it didn’t even really exist.’’ It was a joke that fooled everyone then, as from the moment it was published in Pitchfork, mainstream media outlets were all over it like a dog eating beetroot. This was an interesting era for electronic music subgenres, as “nu rave’’ was also in its prime – another movement which was originally conceived as a joke by UK band and genre forefathers, The Klaxons. As soon as they started gaining momentum, other bands followed suit who incorporated indie music with electronica and the genre became official, still existing to this day as an afterthought in music circles. But much like nu-rave, witch house was a joke which birthed a legitimate musical movement. Unlike nu-rave some people actually seem to listen to witch house. Like the name implies, witch house is a more gothic interpretation of house music which mixes an array of musical styles like a potion in a cauldron. When listening to witch house you can hear the influence of traditional house music along with industrial, hip hop, new wave, electronica, synthpop, experimental, noise rock, drone, and to an extent, even metal. It’s a
strange concoction to say the least, but it actually works once you get past the initial confusion of it all. It’s strange, off-kilter and as avant-garde as dance music can be, and it offers a unique alternative if you’re looking for something that goes against the grain somewhat. Songs tend to contain ethereal vocals, chopped and screwed hip hop tempos and a whirlwind of electronic soundscapes being ravaged by industrial drones. You can also hear the influence of 80’s gothic shoegaze bands such as The Cure and Cocteau Twins. Individually, all of the influences witch house incorporates are better than how they sound blended, but once you get past the awkwardness of it and it starts making sense, it can be captivating music. The culture of witchcraft has a huge influence on witch house artists, many of whom are even practising magicians. However, a large part of it is superficial too, with lyrical themes influenced by the occult, spiritualism and horror stories to evoke macabre sensibilities. It is commonplace for songs to sample movies and television, with Twin Peaks and Charmed both popular choices. It doesn’t get more witchier than Charmed after all, and Twin Peaks is just the epitome of all things strange and wonderful. Witch house artists tend to employ a visual aesthetic to match the dark nature of the music, in both fashion and visual art. This includes crosses, occult symbols and other things that look cool
and creepy. There aren’t any broomsticks, however, or big pointy hats. Not everyone adheres to the term though, with some music journalists and musical acts identified within the genre dismissing it as a false label for a niche genre, formulated by media publications in the music press. Controversially, the genre was also briefly connected to a micro-genre known as rape gaze. I don’t know what rape gaze is if I’m being honest, but the term alone gives me the impression that it’s probably not a very pleasant listening experience. However, this term was publicly denounced by Pictureplane and other artists, who never expected it to become a real genre. They viewed it as a joke; a way to stick it to us journo sorts who stick labels on musical genres and deflate their mysterious auras. If you’re intrigued by witch house, go ahead and download some Ritualz albums and dive in at the deep end. If you’re hosting a party this Halloween and you want it to be as authentic to Samhain as possible, then witch house is the closest form of party music you’ll get to it outside of inviting an actual witch coven over with their decks. But if you want to ease yourself into it, give Deftones singer Chino Moreno’s side project Crosses debut album a listen, then go down the rabbit hole from there. by Kieran Fisher Twitter:

With LGBT+ communities enduring so much adversity throughout the last 40 years, perhaps Halloween can be seen as a night of revelry that the community deserved. Anyone can be whoever or whatever they want for a night, and are encouraged to shock,
repulse and have fun. Samantha Allen suggests that on Halloween, “straight people shed their inhibitions, dress up in ridiculous outfits, and join us queer folk in the gleeful dissection of popular culture that we find so sustaining.” Also, it’s fun. When I was little, thinking of and executing my Halloween costume was as much fun as the night itself, and this has remained with me ever since. Am I perhaps at an age now that is social unacceptable to celebrate Halloween? Perhaps…but I feel I’m owed it, partly because I don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day, but mostly because it’s one night where the macabre, creativity and fluid identity are at the forefront. Why shouldn’t we indulge in the spooky once in a while? On that note, we have compiled everything you will need to make this the gayest of gay Halloweens, whether you take your terror to the streets or are setting up a séance in the comfort of your own crypt.
STAYING IN
GOING OUT There are a whole host of queer-friendly club nights and events to sink your teeth into this Halloween. First and foremost is Club Noir’s annual Halloween celebration Halloween Horror Prom, which takes place on Sat 29 October at O2 Academy. Expect the club night’s usual array of pulse-racing burlesque and Pin Up Parlour, music from DJ Loveless and DJ Poprock as well as 60s inspired band Plastic Youth and an incredible line up of drag and burlesque performers. According to the Club Noir site, the ghoulish masses will be joined by a Dominatrix and her cohort, taking over the reins of a St Andrew’s Cross, who is back by popular demand after her appearance last year. Tickets are £20 and dress code is as follows: prom dresses, tuxedos, horror, fetish, fantasy, showgirls, Rocky Horror, and strictly no jeans or trainers. Let your imagination go wild.
Halloween is hands down my favourite time of the year. I love all things ghoulish, witchy, anything gratuitously bloody and wear my orange pumpkin t-shirt year-round with pride. And of course, I am not alone. But is there a particular LGBT+ leaning towards Halloween? In a celebration of camp kitsch, costumes and the macabre, it might not be out of the question.
shtick and Alaska’s affinity for turning trash into treasure. Having seen Sharon at Battle of the Seasons, we can personally vouch that she is an incredible performer. So channel your inner Lil Poundcake or make a stop at Party City and head to AXM on Friday 28th October. Some of you, however, may want to give the explicitly spooky a miss. In which case, Contra is the night for you. Contra prides itself on being the only queer indie and rock and roll night in Glasgow, playing music you’re unlikely to hear anywhere else; their Facebook categorically states “NO POP NO RNB NO HOUSE.” I admire their brutality, and to be honest can imagine worse things than dancing in full Halloween attire to the likes of Björk, Blondie, Bowie and beyond. The nearest Contra night to Halloween takes place on Friday 28th October at The Brunswick Club. And wherever you decide to haunt, make sure your costume is up to scratch. No onesies welcome. Better still, there are a whole host of LGBT+ friendly costume ideas, for if you’re flying solo, have a partner or a whole gang of ghouls. If you’re a comic fan, Batwoman, Mystique, Deadpool and Midnighter are all amazing characters that full under the LGBT+ umbrella, while there are a ton of team costumes to think about. For example, a gender-swapping Team Rocket, Patsy and Eddie from Absolutely Fabulous for the trashy and fabulous among you, Willow from Buffy (or anyone from Buffy) and Daria and Jane as a throwback. Oh, and Cher. In fact, everyone just go as Cher.
Let’s be honest: Halloween in town can be scary for all the wrong reasons, and if you too are dreading the unwashed masses of Harley Quinn costumes roaming the streets, you may want to join me in hosting your own Halloween night. And what better way to do so than to host your own camp cult classic movie night? And we have done the leg work for you and looked up all the films you will not want to miss on your list. No need to thank us. Spoiler alert: Rocky Horror isn’t on this list, because frankly it should be in your year-round viewing list, anyway. Costumes are still mandatory, and your host should theme their house accordingly: that’s the TSA Halloween way.
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?
Hocus Pocus
An unlikely Halloween pick, but this film is the epitome of camp classics and is a thriller that will have you clutching your pearls. Starring infamous rivals Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, the film follows Jane, an ageing and fading child star, who emotionally and physically tortures her wheelchair-bound sister Blanche. If you want camp value, iconic performances and psychological horror, you’re in for a trick or treat. Plus, Bette Davis. Say no more.
Yes, your favourite childhood Halloween film certainly holds its own in the harsh light of 2016. Gay icons Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy cut the comic ham an inch thick is this high-camp tale of three resurrected witch sisters who wreak Halloween havoc on Salem, Mass. If you didn’t sing along to the witches’ rendition of I Put A Spell On You…did you really have a childhood?
Death Becomes Her Starring Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn and Bruce Willis, the film follows two painfully glamorous rivals outdoing each other having discovered a mysterious drug that offers immortality and eternal youth. But this, shockingly, has a price, and what follows is one of the most absurd, gross and glamorous show downs in movie history. Sadly this was not one of Streep’s Oscar winners…
Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge As horror films go, it doesn’t get much gayer than this. Actor Mark Patton is often touted as the first male”scream queen,” seeing as rather than having a teenage girl in jeopardy, the audience sees a bisexual male who, intentionally or not, finds himself in untraditionally homoerotic situations as well as peril. Terrifying? Yes. Super gay? Indeed.
Carrie We have to have Carrie on this list. Yes it is considered a horror classic, but it has all the themes of angst and teenage misery and kitch factor that makes it an LGBT+ favourite. Sissy Spacek stars as the quintessential bullied teen who happens to be cursed with telekinetic powers and a Bible-crazy mother. It’s a creepy camp classic for the ages – which culminates in the worst prom ever. And I know: I looked like the Penguin at mine.

WHAT’S ON LGBTI
LGBTI NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
AGAINST ME! RELEASE NEW ALBUM Punk rock band Against Me! have released their long – awaited seventh album Shape Shift With Me. The band’s last album Transgender Dysphoria Blues proved to be critical and commercial success, the first record released after lead singer Laura Jane Grace came out publicly as transgender. Since then, Grace has become something of a trans icon and activist, a true pioneer in an industry entrenched in misogyny. Her punk attitude lends itself perfectly to the never-ending fight for equality; last May, she became one of the loudest voices in the protest against North Carolina’s HB2 Bill (forcing transgender people to use bathrooms correlating with the gender on their birth certificate), burning her birth certificate onstage and screaming “goodbye gender!” Grace is a vocal activist, and Shape Shift With Me is certainly a bombastic, non-stop journey. The record opens with ‘Provision L-3,’ a blistering and explosive 2 minute blasting of National Security coercion. So a pretty chill start by all counts. It harkens back to the band’s true punk rock roots, with Grace screaming each lyric. The track leads into ‘12.03,’ which carries on the more melodic quality to the band’s songs seen on Transgender Dysphoria Blues. ‘Haunting, Haunted, Haunt’ serves as another album highlight, with an anthemic chorus and fast tempo Grace’s voice proves to be the driving force of each song; whether she’s screaming or using her voice more softly, Grace remains as one of rock’s most powerful and emotive singers. Her lyrics are brutally honest and poetic; one of the strengths of each passing Against Me! album is Grace’s exploration of themes like gender identity, transgender issues and the emotional toll of transitioning.
The album’s highlight is arguably ‘Crash,’ which sounds like Against Me! blended with The Cars and other power pop bands. It’s a fast paced bittersweet ode to a former flame in an attempt to move on, with sad lyrics like “I just want to say the words to someone / Like I used to say the words to you” that contrasts the upbeat feel of the song. Another favourite is ‘Rebecca,’ a dizzying, rapid fire anthem about a relationship with no string (“Let’s not fall in love…Want you to hit me like a bus And then I’ll get right the f**k back up!”) There are fewer quieter, more contemplative moments on the record than Transgender Dysphoria Blues; no track, for example, comes close to the emotional rawness of ‘Two Coffins,’ an ode to Grace’s daughter which could be a Smiths classic. While the album keeps a great pace throughout and is never dull, it would maybe be more well-rounded if there were more moments to breathe and amplify the softer side to Grace’s voice. Shape Shift With Me proves to be another stellar addition to Against Me!’s catalogue. The record is rapid and relentless from start to finish, with lyrics invoking joy, angst, love and everything inbetween. The band has never sounded tighter, or as bombastic, and Grace’s vocals remain the most exciting and emotive in music today. Grace told Buzzfeed “When you feel targeted as a trans person, the natural inclination is to go into hiding. But visibility is more important than ever; to go there and have the platform of a stage to stand on and speak your mind and represent yourself.” Of course, Laura Jane Grace has become a huge figure as a transgender activist and true punk icon in an age where such a role hardly exists; but the music speaks for itself and proves that when it comes to rock music, all is not lost. And be sure not to miss Against Me! when they play at The Garage on 9th December, the only scheduled Scottish date on their tour.
Donald Trump has pledged to repeal President Obama’s LGBT rights orders and sign a law permitting discrimination. He has vowed to sign the First Amendment Defence Act in an effort to ban the government from taking “action against a person, wholly or partially on the basis that such person believes or acts in accordance with a religious belief or moral conviction that marriage is or should be recognised as the union of one man and one woman, or that sexual relations are properly reserved to such a marriage.” While Trump has always been consistently against gay rights issues like marriage equality, this law would make it legal to discriminate against LGBT+ citizens in the name of religious freedom. This completely negates President Obama’s executive order that prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity by all federal contractors. Trump’s LGBT+ polls have plummeted while Hillary Clinton’s have increased despite her previous inconsistency in supporting LGBT+ laws earlier in her career. For the first time in a presidential election, The National Gay & Lesbian Commerce Centre has endorsed Clinton, stating “The LGBT community has come too far to lose its seat at the table.” In the UK, however, the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has confirmed that he plans to reform the city’s gender options to officially recognise a broader range of gender identities. Mr Kahn stated “City Hall is reviewing the wording of the gender question in order to be more inclusive of non-binary, intersex and transgender people and will seek to apply the change shortly” following a question on the matter from the Green Party’s Sian Berry on why the Clean Air consultations only offered male or female options. This continues Kahn’s run of positive acts towards the LGBT+ community, leading this year’s Pride march in London after five years of Boris Johnson neglecting to do the same. His commitment to causes of gender and sexual equality makes him one of the UK’s most prominent pro-LGBT+ Muslim politicians, which is an inspiring and remarkable feat in today’s political climate. Australia’s ongoing debates on equal marriage continue, with political party leaders failing to agree on a deal and the state of marriage equality hanging in the balance. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is negotiating the more conservative MPs by streamlining plans to bring same-sex marriage to the Australian people in a non-binding plebiscite as opposed to settling it in Parliament. The plebiscite, however, is thought to most likely be shot down. Rodney Croome, a veteran LGBT+ activist, believes “The sooner a plebiscite is killed off the sooner we can get back on the path of a vote in parliament which has the potential to deliver marriage equality in this term of government without the expense and harm of a plebiscite.” In other Australian LGBT+ related news, we recommend watching drag queen Courtney Act interviewing supporters at a Trump rally in full drag. Excellent viewing. Guys. We need to talk about Gaga’s new song. She made her official comeback to music last month with the release of ‘Perfect Illusion’ three years after releasing Art Pop and embracing everything from jazz to kitschy TV horror in the meantime. Was it the comeback fans were wanting, or expecting? …probably not. Don’t get me wrong, ‘Perfect Illusion’ isn’t a bad song at all; in fact it’s pretty rousing and her voice sounds really strong on it. It just fell a bit flat, and the video categorically fails to live up to her past work. It feels underhwleming given the spectacle and sense of occasion a new Lady Gaga video used to have. Gaga’s fourth album Joanne will be released on 21 October; she has kept her cards close to her chest in revealing what direction or sound the new record will have – her list of collaborative producers includes Mark Ronson, Beck and frequent partner RedOne – but die hard fans will have to wait and hear for themselves. Premier League footballer Andre Grey has been given a four match suspension and £250,000 fine by the FA for homophobic language he used in 2012, commenting on the condoning of killing gay people and that they should #burn. The FA has also ordered the Watford player to attend an education course. He has apologised, stating “To clarify, I do not hold the beliefs written in those tweets whatsoever. I can assure everybody that I am not homophobic and as said previously I can only apologise and ask forgiveness for anyone I have offended.” It is promising that retroactive acts of hate speech are being treated so severely by the FA; UK men’s football remains a sport void of any out LGBT+ players, and until a player comes out publicly we must remain vigilant on homo, bi, or transphobic behaviour and ensure players and fans receive adequate education on LGBT+ issues.

HOW CAN CLASSROOMS BECOME A SAFER PLACE FOR LGBT+ YOUTH
j.stone@tsaglasgow.com
The TIE Campaign was launched last June with one very simple aim: to ensure that all schools in Scotland are offering an LGBT+ inclusive education. This includes teachers receiving adequate training to support LGBT+ young people, challenging legislation to allow education to be more inclusive and speaking at school assemblies to tackle discrimination and bullying. The TIE website contends that “Currently, individual institutions can choose not to acknowledge the LGBTI+ community, and their contributions to society, within their school environment and learning programme. By refusing to acknowledge or teach LGBTI+ issues, what such institutions are essentially doing is candidly ostracising LGBTI+ pupils.” According to their recent report on LGBT+ pupils, 47% of those asked say they sometimes experience homophobia, bi-phobia and trans-phobia in school, 24% of whom say it occurs regularly and for 20% it is a daily occurrence. As shocking and frustrating as these statistics are, the most saddening revelation is that 72% of those asked deny homophobia, bi-phobia and trans-phobia was ever challenged by their teachers. 86% of those asked say LGBT+ issues were not discussed or taught in a positive way, which highlights how significant the TIE campaign is in really changing the way teachers and pupils think about LGBT+ life. TSA spoke to Liam from TIE to find out how our classrooms can become a safer place for LGBT+ youth.
FOR ANYONE UNFAMILIAR WITH TIE, WHAT ARE THE MAIN GOALS OF THE CAMPAIGN? The main goals are implement full legislation for fully inclusive education in Scotland that acknowledges and discusses issues facing LGBT+ learners. This ranges from teacher training, informing people of homophobic abuse in schools, as well as informing them of how to handle young people who might be struggling. I had a young boy who sat down yesterday who was really struggling to come out, and we are aiming for every teacher in Scotland to be able to handle these situations from top to bottom. Our goal is that teachers training at university coming into the profession are fully equipped with these skills. One of our staff has two friends, one of whom is training to be a police officer and the other a teacher. The police officer knows the Equality Act inside out, while the teacher has no clue what the Equality Act includes, which I find preposterous, SO MUCH HAS CHANGED IN TERMS OF SEXUAL EQUALITY SINCE I WAS IN SCHOOL. WHAT DO YOU FIND ARE THE MOST GLARING PROBLEMS FACING LGBT+ KIDS IN SCHOOL NOW? Isolation is a theme that keeps coming up, like young people are prisoners in their own minds; they don’t know where to turn. I think about it as internal and external struggle, with a young person questioning whether they might be LGBT+ and having a battle within themselves. The external struggle appears when these young people try to find their way in the world; we want to work towards a society where young people aren’t afraid to tell their pals they’re gay, and the best way to achieve this is through education.
SCOTLAND WAS LAST YEAR VOTED THE BEST COUNTRY IN EUROPE TO BE GAY AND THE FAIREST NATION IN TERMS OF LEGAL PROTECTION. WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE EXPLAINS THE HUGE GAP BETWEEN THIS ACHIEVEMENT AND THE PERCENTAGES OF REPORTED HOMOPHOBIA IN SCHOOLS? What we have to remember is the people who are being treated well in terms of legislation are adults who have already been damaged by homophobic abuse. We’re in a position now where we can start rubbing that out and in the first minute of primary 1 that is where that education begins. In terms of legislation, Scotland should be applauded and recognised for this. But I’m heading to a school this afternoon where kids will be faced with homophobic abuse: how can we tell these kids “don’t worry, in 5 or 6 years time you can marry your boyfriend, things will be great when you leave school”? For young people, school can feel like the beginning, middle and end of everything, and with social media some of these kids don’t even get any respite when they go home. Unfortunately the education system has not caught up with society or the amazing progress in the legal protection of LGBT+ people: that is something we are going to change. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BEST WAYS TO CREATE AN INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT IN SCHOOLS THROUGH THE CURRICULUM? In classrooms, you can learn about gay heroes like Harvey Milk and the Stonewall Riots in History, Alan Turing in Computing, Oscar Wilde in English. Highlighting the rich contribution LGBT+ people have made to society would undeniably help in promoting
equality. When I was in school, our teacher told us how in South Africa at one point, if you saw an injured dog you had to tell the police, but no such law existed for helping a black person. This shocked me and stayed with me for a long time, and I believe the same thing will happen to young people when issues facing LGBT+ people in our society are incorporated in the classroom. SO MANY HIGH-PROFILE POLITICIANS HAVE SUPPORTED THE TIE CAMPAIGN, FROM PATRICK HARVIE TO MHAIRI BLACK AND NICOLA STURGEON. HOW IMPORTANT IS POLITICAL ENDORSEMENT IN BOTH TACKLING HOMOPHOBIA IN SCHOOLS AND PROMOTING EQUALITY WITHIN SCHOOLS? There are a few things to consider, like visibility. Giving us quotes and allowing us to make graphics is great because young people see that these decision makers are supportive of what they’re going through. But it’s also important to hold these people to account, because don’t think for one minute that someone who gives us a quote will get away with not pushing our campaign as far as they can. What is clear with the TIE campaign is that we need activists – teachers in the classroom, people on the street – and we need these decision makers to argue their case to their parties and drive home our campaign in government. PART OF YOUR CAMPAIGN INCLUDES GOING INTO SCHOOLS TO GIVE FREE ASSEMBLIES ON HOMOPHOBIA AND INEQUALITY IN SCHOOLS; WHAT ARE THOSE EXPERIENCES LIKE? I’M INTERESTED TO KNOW WHAT THE RESPONSES ARE LIKE FROM PUPILS AND STAFF RESPECTIVELY.
We have upcoming meetings with government officials to obtain data and information from staff and pupils to assess how they feel about the work we are doing and the impact they’ve had so far. We’ve had teachers tell us as recently as yesterday that of all the groups that come into their school, there are none that grab the pupils’ attention like ours. A teacher at Vale of Leven Academy in Dumbarton, which we recommend as being the best school for inclusive education, told us their head teacher considered ours to be the most powerful assembly he’s seen in his teaching career. We’ve had kids create Facebook accounts to get in touch with us to speak about coming out and their feelings anonymously, all it takes is listening to them and assuring them that everything they are experiencing is natural and normal. HOW CAN ALLIES MOST EFFECTIVELY SUPPORT THE CAMPAIGN? The best way to effectively support the campaign is show their support; they can also make sure they’re aware of their use of language. I know friends and family have re-evaluated their behaviour with their children, especially their use of language in regards to LGBT+ issues. If you take a second to think about the way you’re talking to your children, your friends, your colleagues, it’s a subtle but important way of showing support. You’re taking time to be careful with your words and shape minds. And if it comes to the crunch and we have the responsibility to debate our campaign, we will call on LGBT+ allies and supporters of equality to speak to their MPs and push the campaign even further.

STILL SHOWING IN CINEMAS BLAIR WITCH
PICK OF THE MONTH
INFERNO
It doesn’t feel right reviewing this film when I spent most of it terrified, hiding behind my hands and asking afterwards, “so what happened to him, where did she go?” Blair Witch reinforced my belief that I should never see scary films and scary it is, I think.
BRIDGET JONES’S BABY
Everyone’s favourite big-pant-wearing chick is finally back on screen and we think this latest instalment was worth the wait. The film is typical of the franchise in that it’s a mostly hilarious (sometimes unbearably cringy) and easy-going, with the added benefit of McDreamy thrown in – if you’ve not seen Patrick Dempsey in Grey’s Anatomy, get the box set on right now.
FREE STATE OF JONES
Everyone’s favourite, incredibly clever symbologist is back on our screens this month with Tom Hanks reprising his role as Robert Langdon in Inferno, the latest adaptation from Dan Brown’s Robert Langdon series. Most of us will be familiar with Brown’s tried and tested best-selling formula, however Inferno departs from the ancient mysteries to focus on the far more modern problem of overpopulation. When Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) wakes up in an Italian hospital with amnesia and no clue how or why he ended up in Florence, he works with doctor Sienna Brooks (Felicity Jones) to try and recover his memory and together they race across Europe with the aim of foiling a deadly global plot that could wipe out half of the world’s population. We all know it wouldn’t be a Dan Brown plot without a good mystery and a riddle – we’re promised this is the hardest to solve yet – so whilst attempting to bring an end to this deadly scheme the intelligent pair need to follow a trail of mysterious codes that allude to passages from Dante. With frequent references to Dante’s Inferno, it’s only fair to give a quick reminder about the famous, 14th century epic poem, Divine Comedy, written by Dante Alighieri. Inferno, Dante’s not Dan’s, tells the journey of Dante’s voyage through the nine circles of Hell, guided by Virgil, the ancient Roman poet. Previous adaptations of the Robert Langdon series, The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons featured ancient mysteries, historical themes and focused heavily on religion, so it’s hardly surprising that they created their fair share of

TALES OF THE PECULIAR
In 2009, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performed at the Super Bowl’s halftime show. The exhilarating experience was so extraordinary that Bruce decided to write about it and thus developed his autobiography Born to Run. The seven years worth of writing are evident as Bruce has devoted himself to the book and brings the same honesty and originality found in his songs to it.
No doubt you’ll have seen the trailer for Tim Burton’s typicallyeccentric looking latest film, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. However, before Miss Peregrine gave them a home, the story of peculiars was written in the Tales. This companion to the bestselling book version of the new film features stunning illustrations and new, original stories.
BORN TO RUN
Based on an outstanding true story, the film kicks things off on a good note with an impressive opening battle but fails to keep our attention as it becomes duller and duller as it drags on. Matthew McConaughey and the supporting cast are superb but the film’s script lets it down.
controversy and for those wondering if Inferno will do the same, it’s looking likely. Criticisms of the book have surrounded the incorrect scientific inclusions, the “gates of hell” description of Manila (capital of the Philippines) and the questions that have arisen about overpopulation – many have taken issue with the theme in the novel that we won’t be able to survive if human growth continues as is. Ron Howard, the director of the first two adaptations, is back in charge of this instalment and in an interview with Cinema Bravo, he described how he feels audiences will react to the film’s possibly controversial plot: “The Dan Brown stories combine these button-pushing ideas that offer the audience two things; there’s the tempo, the pace, there’s the clue path and there’s this feeling that you’re going to have something to talk about when the movie is over.” The director also recently discussed with Cinema Blend why he chose to skip past the third novel in the Robert Langdon series, The Lost Symbol, which was abandoned in 2013 following some initial development. “Cinematically, when Lost Symbol came out, I think our feeling, my feeling was that it’s a terrific, another terrific novel. It’s great material, but it felt like, coming close on the heels of Angels & Demons and Da Vinci Code, that thematically and tonally, it might feel a little bit too much like the other books, at that particular moment. [Inferno] immediately felt like a cinematic next step, and that excited us.” Although both Hanks and Howard are returning for Inferno, this time Felicity Jones (Chalet Girl, The Theory of Everything) is joining the cast as Doctor Sienna Brooks. The English actress will have a busy few months ahead with the release of Inferno, followed shortly after by the release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in December. Despite the continuous poor reviews from critics of the book series (who take particular fault with Brown’s writing style) and the generally unfavourable critiques of the film adaptations, it’s likely that the latest instalment will become a box-office smash, just like its predecessors. Inferno is in UK cinemas by Courtney Hendry Online Editor 14 October.

THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN Last year’s hot bestseller The Girl on the Train is set to be this year’s hottest adaptation. Not only does it have a killer cast headed up by Emily Blunt, but it’s still the book everyone is talking about. With the trailers out and lots of details around, we’ve got everything you need to know about it right here. Sicario star Emily Blunt plays a woman drawn into a terrifying mystery in this gripping thriller based on the best-selling book. Rachel Watson (Emily Blunt) is a divorcee reeling from the recent split with her husband. Travelling on the train every morning during her commute, she finds herself consumed with a seemingly perfect couple whom she passes on a daily basis. However, when she unwittingly becomes witness to something truly shocking as part of her journey, Rachel is drawn into a mystery that will see her life spiral even further out of control. Dynamic and versatile British star Emily Blunt, who excelled in recent drugs cartel thriller Sicario, here she promises to deliver another emotionally fraught, engrossing performance in this adaption of Paula Hawkins’ sensational novel. Directed by Tate Taylor, the man behind The Help and Get On Up, and with a cast that also includes Luke Evans and Rebecca Ferguson, it promises to be twisty and compulsive viewing. The Girl On The Train is in UK cinermas on 7 October.
AMERICAN HONEY
Acclaimed film-maker Andrea Arnold (Fish Tank, Wuthering Heights) won the Jury Prize at Cannes for her first film set in America, about a crew of hard-partying teenagers criss-crossing the Midwest while working as travelling magazine salesmen. Star (newcomer Sasha Lane) lives on the fringes of American society, resorting to dumpster diving in order to feed her half-siblings. When she meets Jake (Shia LaBeouf) dancing in the aisles at a Kmart, their attraction is instantaneous and magnetic. Star places the kids in care and immediately joins Jake on a cross-country drive with a Dickensian gang of misfits: slugging hard liquor in the backs of vans, crashing in rundown motels, and selling fraudulent magazine subscriptions. Star and Jake are ecstatic in each other’s company. They begin dreaming of a house and family to call their own. But their relationship offends the crew’s queen bee, Krystal (Riley Keough), and Star’s precarious place – in the gang and in society – becomes clear. American Honey is in UK cinemas on 14 October.

OUIJA: ORIGIN OF EVIL
LET’S BE EVIL
Maverick horror film director Mike Flanagan (Absentia, Hush) was a surprising choice to helm the sequel to the modest genre hit Ouija, but direct it he did and because of this, we’re very, very interested in seeing it. Inviting audiences again into the lore of the spirit board, Ouija: Origin of Evil tells a terrifying new tale as the followup to 2014’s sleeper hit that opened at number one. In 1965 Los Angeles, a widowed mother and her two daughters add a new stunt to bolster their séance scam business and unwittingly invite authentic evil into their home. When the youngest daughter is overtaken by the merciless spirit, this small family confronts unthinkable fears to save her and send her possessor back to the other side. Ouija: Origin of Evil is in UK cinemas 21 October.
Let’s Be Evil is a contained, futuristic sci-fi horror flick from Martin Owen (L.A. Slasher). It looks slick, spare, and cold as ice – which brings a chilly veneer to the whole thing, adding to the unsettling element of the unknown. Jenny, who’s been tasked with caring for a sick parent in need of expensive meds, is starting a brand-new job as a childcare worker. It’s her first morning, and things are already looking suspicious when she steps into the elevator. The level of security is way beyond what would be expected at a regular nursery. Nonetheless, Jenny proceeds. She finds herself in an underground facility and is introduced to two other chaperones, Tiggs and Darby. That’s when the virtual reality nightmare brgins. Jenny finds herself thrust into a disturbing technological experiment in which she is an unwitting player in a terrifying virtual game. This future shock brain-bender is a creepy kids thriller for our tech-addicted culture. Let’s Be Evil is in UK cinemas on 28 October.

ELLA PURNELL IS EMMA IN MISS PEREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN Ella Purnell spent a lot of time up in the air whilst filming Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children – and she loved it. Ella is Emma, one of a group of children who have unique abilities – known as peculiars – who live in an orphanage on a remote island protected by the exotic Miss Peregrine (Eva Green) in Tim Burton’s eagerly awaited blockbuster, based on the best selling novel by Ransom Riggs. She is lighter than air and will float up into the sky if she doesn’t wear heavy, lead boots that keep her planted on the ground. And that meant that Ella had to do lots of stunts suspended on wires. Starring alongside Dame Judi Dench as Miss Avocet and Samuel L. Jackson as the evil Barron, here’s what Ella had to say about the upcoming dark fantasy adventure.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
IT’S TIME FOR SOME
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT You’ve spent four years pouring over ridiculously expensive textbooks, you’ve pulled the all-nighters and have spent more time in the library than you care to even imagine. Now the highs and lows of university life are over and you have the degree – that single piece of paper that proves you are qualified in your chosen sector – so now what?
The reality of post-uni life is that most graduates don’t walk into that fantastic, high-paid role they’ve been dreaming of. In fact, a study by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development showed that 58.8 per cent of UK graduates have ended up in nongraduate jobs. The study also revealed that around one in 12 of those working in low-skilled jobs, such as in call centres, coffee shops and bars are now graduates.
their undergraduate course. However, it’s worth remembering that entering further education is often an expensive choice and it’s not always helpful to your chosen career, many sectors would still rather see experience on your CV rather than further qualifications. It’s always a good idea to speak to with your university careers service to discuss your options.
For those not quite ready to leave education behind, some people really love being a student, there are many postgraduate degree options available.
Many people feel obligated to continue on with their degree, even when it has become obvious to them that they dislike the subject matter and don’t wish to pursue a career in that field and this can seem like a waste of money at the time as you rack up those student loan fees but it may be a smart move after all as employers are often less interested in your actual degree field and more interested in their employees having the right attitude and creative skills. This opens up a wide array of opportunities for graduates.
It’s generally a good idea for people who want to move into a career which requires a specific qualification, such as teaching or for those who don’t wish to pursue a career in the field relating to

of ‘Graduate Researcher’ at social enterprise, The Lennox Partnership, and the role specifically mentions that the company is “keen to receive applications from graduates from all disciplines, providing you possess the essential criteria for the role.” Speaking of social enterprises, this month we spoke with former teacher Michael Sani (page 51) who co-founded Bite The Ballot about why he left his job to inspire young people to become engaged with politics. If you’ve ever had a business idea that could transform communities and create social change, Michael’s advice is to go for it, saying: “To go into social entrepreneurship is the greatest profession on the planet, because you actually have a purpose and you live for something.” However, even if your idea might not change the world, if you’ve thought of a product you can sell or a skill you can capitalise on, there are many organisations out there that aim to help budding entrepreneurs.
Uni-Cycle is a project that delivers free bike maintenance, cycle maps, social rides, training and bike loans to staff and students at universities and colleges across Glasgow. The project is based out of Glasgow Bike Station, a recycling charity whose purpose is to break down barriers to cycling in the local community. Uni-Cycle is funded by the Scottish Government’s Climate Challenge Fund to deliver free services and opportunities to encourage more people to consider cycling as a carbon-neutral means of transport at universities and colleges across Glasgow. Uni-Cycle started off as a students-only programme but in 2016 expanded to also provide support for university and college staff, ensuring everyone on campus has access to the service. The service is available to the following universities and colleges in the Glasgow area: Glasgow Caledonian University, Glasgow School of Art, University of Glasgow, Strathclyde University, University of the West of Scotland, City of Glasgow College, Glasgow Kelvin College, West College Scotland.

The Uni-Cycle team visits each campus at least once a month with a Dr. Bike service offering a bike check(worth £25) by a certified mechanic - as well as maintenance and basic parts - completely free of charge. The Dr. Bike service includes a cycle information point to provide staff and students with access to free cycle mapsL and travelling advice. Alongside access to free bike servicing and information, Uni-Cycle also provides training for students or staff who express an interest in mechanical training such as City & Guilds and Velotech Industry Standard Training. On top of this, Uni-Cycle has used the CCF grant to purchase a fleet of 30 brand new bikes in order to provide staff and students with access to a free bike loan for up to three weeks at any given time. No charges, no hassle, no fuss; those who wish to be added to the waiting list, can do so by getting in touch via the Uni-Cycle Facebook page.
Some of which include Bridge 2 Business, a scheme run by Young Enterprise Scotland which offers advice from business mentors on your ideas; The Prince’s Trust Enterprise Project, which helps people aged 18-30 who have an idea and want to start their own business and the Shackleton Foundation Leadership Award, which offers seed funding, grants and assistance with practical aspects of starting up a social venture to social entrepreneurs in the UK who want to establish their own non-profit ventures. Another young entrepreneur we spoke with this month is Josh Quigley, who after graduating from Edinburgh University with a degree in marketing went on to form his own digital marketing agency, SharkDog and in 2015 was awarded Young Entrepreneur of the Year by Forth Valley Chamber of Commerce. However, just eight weeks later and silently battling depression, he attempted suicide and after surviving with no major injuries he re-evaluated his life and is now cycling around the world with the aim of raising awareness and eliminating the stigma surrounding mental health issues. We will be exploring Josh’s challenge more in our December issue but his story shows that we never know where life may take us after university. Whether you want to be your own boss, continue into further education, explore a different career path than you originally imagined or indeed take time away from the pressures of study and work to travel or volunteer, the main thing to remember is that you’re still young and if you want to you can explore all of these possibilities – there are many services out there for those by Courtney Hendry looking for help Online Editor and advice make @courtneysarahx c.hendry@tsaglasgow.com use of them.

OCTOBER 2016, ISSUE 26 Essentially one day the Prime Minister will trigger article 50 which will be the terms of us leaving Europe and I think that is the fundamental time for all of those disappointed voices to come forward and show all the things that they want as part of the leaving negotiations, whether that’s to still be able to go to university in any European country or whether it’s programmes to support funding for voluntary trips abroad. It’s about us collectively understanding the things that we do and don’t want to change and fighting for them. BEFORE YOU STARTED BITE THE BALLOT, YOU WERE A NORMAL GUY, YOU WERE A TEACHER AND NOW YOU’VE ENCOURAGED SO MANY YOUNG PEOPLE TO VOTE. SO WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO ANOTHER NORMAL YOUNG PERSON WITH AN IDEA THAT COULD HELP OTHER PEOPLE, ABOUT STARTING THEIR OWN SOCIAL ENTERPRISE? I’d say it’s the greatest thing you could ever do. I think we need to inspire more young minds to think about the world of work not just as where can I go to earn the most money but to think about a job that is rewarding and makes an impact whether that’s on your local community or your local young people or indeed for the planet.
AN INTERVIEW WITH MICHAEL SANI – LEADING SOCIAL ENTREPRENEUR AND CEO OF ICONIC MOVEMENT BITE THE BALLOT Bite The Ballot, a youth-led, grassroots democracy movement, aims to empower young people to be actively engaged with politics and to view changemaking as habitual and a rite of passage. We spoke to Michael Sani, the former teacher behind it all, about how he first took an interest in politics, why starting a social enterprise is the “greatest thing you could ever do” and how young voters can stay engaged with politics post-Brexit. HI MIKE, CAN YOU START OFF BY TELLING US WHAT GAVE YOU THE IDEA FOR BITE THE BALLOT? Yeah, the idea came from a conversation whilst I was a teacher. My boss at the time asked me one day if I was going to vote, it was three weeks before the general election in 2010 and I said to him ‘Awh Dave, I don’t vote, politics doesn’t affect me’ and he couldn’t believe it. He made it very real for me in a conversation just by showing me how the things I cared about were in fact political and by caring about them, that made me political. Then when I did a little bit of research with students at the school, it was clear actually that even at that time no-one was really inspiring the next generation to understand the political system and their role within it. So it became a lunchtime club really for about a year and a half, and in that time it would spring together different students and look at solutions as to why they weren’t engaging and some of the barriers to engagement.
FOR YOUNG PEOPLE WHO ARE ALREADY QUITE INTERESTED IN POLITICS ALREADY, WHAT CAN YOU SAY TO THOSE WHO ARE LOOKING TO HAVE THEIR VOICES HEARD SOCIALLY OR POLITICALLY? Well ultimately it’s understanding the power you’ve got when you come together, regardless of whether that voting age has commenced yet or whether you can register to vote.
To go into social entrepreneurship is the greatest profession on the planet, because you actually have a purpose and you live for something. You’ll find out of your group of friends that when it gets to Sunday evening and people are like ‘Oh god, I’ve got work tomorrow’ you’re actually one of the few people that are excited because you can get back to your mission.
Begin to talk about the issues you care about with the community around you – whether that’s your friends at school or people you hang around with outside of school. Actually removing the taboo relating to politics is one of the greatest achievements that the younger generation could do.
JUST FINALLY, WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS FOR BITE THE BALLOT? WHERE DO YOU PLAN ON TAKING THE MOVEMENT NEXT? Oh wow, I think ultimately we’re going to try and affect and change the systems which are causing the fundamental problems in the first place.
For many of us our MPS are in our local area every Friday, we don’t need to make an appointment we can just turn up and I think it’d be a massive evolution to the political space if there were groups of younger citizens arriving at their MP’S surgery and demanding answers to the things they care about. THERE’S OBVIOUSLY BEEN A LOT IN THE PRESS IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS AFTER BREXIT ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF YOUNG PEOPLE THAT HAD VOTED TO REMAIN. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO PEOPLE WHO WERE DISAPPOINTED IN THE OUTCOME, ABOUT STILL HAVING THEIR VOICES HEARD? I think the most important thing now is to not turn your back on politics and formal participation because obviously you know many of us woke up to a decision that we didn’t want but things are going to move on with or without our participation.
So we’ll probably try and peel away from direct delivery because as much as we’ve enjoyed being out in the heart of the community it’s really only a short term improvement because unless we try and affect the education system from a really early age, so that young people are developing the skills and values of a citizen from a really early age, then hopefully they’ll become the citizens of tomorrow that are challenging injustice and they’ll have all the tools to do so. So Bite The Ballot is going to start to concentrate on early years curriculum and then equally will try and concentrate on more digital democracy and pioneering games and tools just to remove that current taboo relating to politics and empower more people to engage with one another on and offline to demonstrate their political power. by Courtney Hendry Online Editor

EDINBURGH COLLEGE STUDENT RECEIVES RECOGNITION THROUGH SCOTTISH INSTITUTE FOR ENTERPRISE YOUNG INNOVATORS COMPETITION
Edinburgh College student Simon Griffiths is developing an app and website aimed at giving kidney patients a way to talk to each other while connected to the life-saving machines. Now his efforts have been rewarded by recognition through the Scottish Institute for Enterprise Young Innovators Competition, in which he gained a commendation, he hopes to take his idea to the next level. Loop is a new way for people newly diagnosed with kidney conditions requiring dialysis to find out more about their condition, receive dietary health information and connect with people going through the same thing. “The genesis was my own experience of undergoing renal dialysis treatment twice a week for three and a half hours a time. I thought ‘wouldn’t it be great if you could talk to other people who were also on dialysis across the UK at the same time?”, explained Simon, 28 from Leith. “Then I remembered my own experiences and thought I’d create a three-phase information source. There’s quite a lot of medical jargon used when you’re first diagnosed and it can be very overwhelming for you and your family, so the first stage is an accessible information pack.” “The next stage is an interactive social platform which would allow people to collaborate with each other online when undergoing the dialysis. And then the third stage is a mobile app, which would allow people to check nutritional information, using the camera, and would also have social elements, allowing people to check in at different locations.” Simon recently applied for the Bridge2Business Test Grant and was referred to the Prince’s Trust to secure funding for his innovative idea. He has also been partnered with the very talented Josh and Lara from Geared App, and is getting some hugely worthwhile Local Hero Support.

The Benefits of
Careers Fairs Whether you’ve just started a degree or you’re a returning student, a university careers fair might not be on your list of priorities at the moment. However, don’t underestimate the advantage of speaking to recruiters, careers services and other students face-to-face – everyone you meet could be a useful resource at some stage in your career. Plus, careers fairs are a great way to discover paid opportunities during your studies that could lead you in to graduate employment. “Careers Fairs are beneficial to students of all years and subjects. They provide an opportunity to research possible career paths, and get in depth information about organisations to help you with your applications. To get the most out of an event, research and prepare in advance - think about informed questions to ask the employers you are interested in.” - Janet Forsyth, Careers Consultant at The University of Edinburgh If you put in the effort and make the most of the opportunity, you’ll get more out of a careers fair than just a couple of freebies! Planning on heading along to an event? Check out our top tips: • Be presentable and dress smartly. • Arrive early to beat any queues.

DREAM JOB CATCHER
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF ANDY BRADY What could be more rewarding than landing people their dream job? Well working in recruitment that’s exactly what you do every day. From finding a lawyer a new role in a top corporate firm to placing an engineer on an offshore rig in Singapore, everyday a recruitment consultant makes dreams come true.
If recruitment sounds like the business for you then why not consider HR Consultancy’s graduate programme. Find out more at our website hrconsultancy.co.uk
But what does a day look like in the world of recruitment? We asked Andy Brady, HR Business Manager for leading Scottish recruitment firm, HR Consultancy, who gave us a sneak peek into his daily work life.
“A big part of my day is spent on the phone. From interviewing potential candidates to negotiating a deal with a client, the phone is essential. Many people shy away from the phone nowadays in favour of email or text but in the recruitment business it’s essential to have real conversations. It’s the only way to really get a good grasp of what people are like. Reading people is an essential skill in recruitment, but it’s not as easy as it sounds. I’ve always been ‘a people person,’ but it takes practice to genuinely understand what a person is like from just one interview. I watch interviewees’ body language, listen to their tone and try to find their USP –
that’s what an employer is looking for. This job is a bit like speed dating. Often I can interview up to eight people in a day so I’ve got to be really clear in my head what skill set and type of individual I want to make sure we find the best person for the job. A perk of the job is getting to meet so many different characters from all walks of life. Even if the job isn’t suitable for them this time round, the chances are they will be perfect for something else – a recruiters’ contact book is their most precious tool. Sometimes I feel like a detective. It’s easy to build up a profile of a candidate from their social media channels. It’s standard practice now for recruiters and
employers to do a background check on social media – so just be careful what you post! Negotiation skills are non-negotiable. We spend a lot of time trying to get the best deal for both clients and candidates. Whether that means salary, benefits or working conditions, it’s my job to iron out the deal that will make everyone happy. What people want from a job is changing. It’s not all about the money anymore. Work life balance is so important for new recruits, as is flexible working options and the opportunity to work from home. Technology also plays a big part and a commitment from an
employer on professional development is really crucial. Tenacity is essential is this game. You need to have the drive and desire to get the best end result and sometimes that means trying, trying and trying again. It can take time to find the best candidate for a role and then you need to sell the company to the candidate and vice versa. A positive mental attitude helps and a good sense of humour goes a long way to getting through the sometimes busy days. My Plan B was to be a presenter on Top Gear because I love cars but I think Jeremy Clarkson took my spot before he ran into his own HR issues.”

Bridge 2 Business launched the first Tertiary Enterprise Education Awards in 2016 to recognise the outstanding Entrepreneurial spirit within Scotland’s Further Education sector. The categories covered students, lecturers, and the army of dedicated volunteers that contribute so much to the Enterprise Education of our College Learners. An additional award was also given to Siara Javed, one of the many Local Heroes that Bridge 2 Business rely on to inspire, connect and support students into business. Saira Javed originally set up her mobile hair and beauty business in 2004, whilst studying and working in other jobs. Beauty by Saira was launched in 2012, whilst Saira was studying HND in Beauty Therapy at Glasgow Clyde College. Saira has since gone on to grow and develop the business across Scotland, alongside very active voluntary and community work. Saira’s category, Local Hero of the Year Award, was judged by Yvonne Greaves, Enterprise Manager for Royal Bank of Scotland, and Graham Morgan, Deputy Chief Executive of Elevator UK. Yvonne Greaves, of RBS said “Congratulations to Saira on winning this Award with Bridge 2 Business. Your application really stood out and it was rather humbling how much you are paying it forward to the next generation of potential young business people.”

To be chosen and acknowledged among such recognised entrepreneurs who were also nominated is truly an honour. I would like to thank RBS and Elevator UK. It means a lot knowing what I have shared has been of benefit to the up and coming talent within our industry. It has been great working alongside Bridge 2 Business over the past two years, supporting various colleges and hundreds of students, particularly at West College Scotland and New College Lanarkshire alongside Young Enterprise Scotland. When I first talked to Bridge 2 Business I did not know how students would take to someone coming in to speak to them, sharing their
experiences. But from the minute I first stepped into the classroom I could see myself sitting there many years ago. Being able to give something back to the students about my entrepreneurial journey, my weaknesses, and my strengths made me feel really proud. Bridge 2 Business do tremendous work. They provide start up support to students, 1-2-1s, mentoring arrangements, grants, and it’s a kick start in the right direction in the most positive manner for students that are looking to start a business. I am very happy that I have in some way helped future entrepreneurs within the beauty industry.
