Cover Story: The General Election

An Interview with:

RUTH DAVIDSON There are a lot of voices in the media right now telling young people that they shouldn’t vote in this General Election. For you, why is it important and why should young people go out and vote? I think politics is important because it shapes the world around us. If people want to participate in that and they want to have ownership in their own future, then they’ve got to go out and be involved. One of the things that gets me most angry is when people say young folk aren’t political. I think they’re intensely political. They may not be party political but in terms of joining online campaigns or single issue groups, you see people who are willing to spend a lot of time and effort and put a lot of themselves into areas of change. I would say there are lots of ways you can change things in this country by voting and by choosing not to vote, you are essentially counting yourself out in those areas. One of the frequent reasons given for young people not voting is a sort of disillusionment with socalled ‘establishment’ parties. More often than not, one of the parties involved in that description would be the Conservative Party. Does that perception of the party make it difficult to get your message across to young people? Well in Scotland we’ve not actually been a part of the establishment for a long time! I think people respond to the message carrier. Most people understand the job that I do in Scotland and the job I do in the Scottish Parliament. One of my great joys in recent years was working through the Better Together campaign and working with some of our youth advocates. I think there’s a whole generation of people who were involved on the cutting edge of a political debate in the referendum and don’t want to just put that aside now, they want to keep that momentum going. I think for that reason, the future of politics in Scotland really is in very safe hands. One thing that can be a confusing aspect for people is the crossover between the Westminster and Scottish wings of any given party. When it comes to the Conservatives, how much of what we see in Westminster in terms of policy is also true in Scotland? Well I have complete autonomy in Scotland over policy, over candidates, over party management and over all of our

campaigns. Everything we do in Scotland really comes under my purview but we’re all Conservatives. In terms of what’s being going on in Westminster in terms of trying to keep the long-term economic recovery going and trying to create jobs, I really support and respect my colleagues for the work they’ve been doing. There seems to be a viewpoint among some young people that Conservative policies in Westminster such as housing benefit cuts for the under 25s and increases in tuition fees have been targeted at young people specifically because they don’t go out and vote and when they do, they often don’t vote Conservative. How would you respond to that? Well I would say no, absolutely not. We’re working to create opportunities for young people coming up now. On housing benefit, lots of young people across Scotland instead of going on a social housing list, will go and share in private rented accommodation. That’s what I did as a student. Even when I finished my degree, I had to move back in with my parents because my first job was quite low paid. We’re trying to make sure that first jobs are better paid and that’s why we’re raising the minimum wage higher than inflation and we’re not taking tax away from people who are low earners. Down south, you can see the difference in the approach to education and there are more people from poorer backgrounds attending university because bursaries are much higher. In the Scottish Parliament, we’ve also led the fight against the SNP’s cuts to college and university places. So I think while we do try and make sure we have an economy that works for everybody across the UK, I think that we’ve done a lot for young people. Whilst there are obviously positives in there, it can seem like a lot of the cuts the Conservatives have brought in are disproportionately affecting some of the most vulnerable people in our society. Can you understand why that might leave people frustrated? Well I would reject that on the grounds that we’re trying to get more people into work. I’m proud that there are fewer children in Scotland right now living in workless households than we’ve seen before. I’m proud that we’ve been able to raise the minimum wage and we’ve been able to say to people going forward that you will never pay income tax if you work 30 hours on the minimum wage.

I’m also proud that we’ve been able to reform welfare to make it easier for people to get back into work and we’ve got child poverty lower now than at any time under the last Labour government. These are all things we’ve done to try and make sure that we’re puting money into people’s pockets on the lower end of the scale. We know that when recessions happen, the people who suffer most are those on the lowest wages and lowest incomes, not just in this country but in every country. That’s why we’ve taken the decisions we have to make sure that inequality is falling and that’s what we’re seeing. For you, why are the Conservatives the best party to represent young people and give them a voice? Because we want to give them the opportunity to do whatever it is that they crave. The reason I came into politics is because I want a young person growing up in Scotland right now to have an opportunity that is limited only by their own ambition so that whatever it is they want to be in life, there’s a job there for them.

I think it’s a disgrace in 2015 Scotland that the single biggest indicator of whether you’re going to be a poor adult is whether you’re parents are poor and the best way to break that cycle is to make sure there are better opportunities for all. That means better schools and better jobs at the end of it and that’s what we’re trying to achieve. What were you like during your time as a student? As a student, I was probably more interested in the extra-curricular activities than I was in my lectures. I did an arts course, sort of English and Scottish literature, at Edinburgh and a lot of my lectures were at nine or ten in the morning. I can’t honestly say hand on heart that I attended all of them – or anywhere near all of them – and that’s possibly why I maybe don’t have the best degree in the world. I don’t recommend that approach to anyone. If I was to go back and do it all again, I would make sure I wasn’t so seduced by the lifestyle outside of my classroom but it was good fun and I certainly enjoyed it.

An Interview with:

WILLIE RENNIE There are a lot of voices in the media talking about whether or not young people should go out and vote. For you, why does it matter that young people go out and vote? It matters for young people because if you don’t vote, politics will just look after different generations. We’re driven by the people who vote for us. We’re creatures of the democratic system and if you don’t take part in that system then generally whilst your views may not get ignored, they won’t get the priority they would otherwise deserve. If you want to influence society or have a voice in how society is run, then even though it might not always work, voting is the best way to do that. One thing we hear a lot is that young people are crying out for one of the mainstream parties to really represent them. In your view, why are the Liberal Democrats the party to do that? We’ve been the natural party for students and graduates for a long time. Our copy book has been blotted in recent years for obvious reasons but naturally, we’re internationalist, we’re progressive, we’re liberal and tolerant and we’re very much the kind of party that I think is a natural fit for students. It’s interesting that support for the Lib Dems has fallen among young people in recent years though. Why do you think that is? Tuition fees are the obvious reason. We said we would do one thing which we weren’t able to do. People are finding it difficult to forgive and forget and all I would say is, yeah, we got that thing wrong and it was a mistake – a big mistake – but look at all the other things that we’ve got right. Students who have got part time jobs will not be paying any income tax at all as a result of raising the tax thresholds. That simply would not have been done without the liberal democrats. Realistically though, to what extent do you think you’ll be able to win back student support at this election? My job and the job of other political leaders really is going to be to restore that faith that’s clearly been lost. I think we let you down in 2010 and we won’t do that again because you’ve been the lifeblood of our

party for a long time and I think we need you and you need us in order for young people’s voices to be heard. There is still an awful lot of work to be done to restore that confidence. It’s proven by actions; that’s the way we do it. If we say we’re going to do something, we do it. In this election we’ve said that investing in education is our top priority; something we really believe in. We’re going to prioritise that in any negotiations for coalition and we’ll deliver it. That’s the kind of action that will reassure people that we’re true to our word. You say that higher education is an important issue for the Liberal Democrats. What does that actually mean in terms of policy? Because the issue is devolved, we have a different approach from our colleagues down south. For students in Scotland, what you get with the Liberal Democrats is a commitment to no tuition fees; a commitment to restoring the level of student support which has been diminished by the SNP through increasing loans and cutting grants for people from disadvantaged backgrounds. We want to raise the repayment threshold for loans up to what it is in England, which is £21,000. Those are the issues that we will continue to make the case for up here. I wanted to ask you about the possibility of the Lib Dems going into a coalition after the election. Between Conservative and Labour, which party would you rather see the Lib Dems go into an agreement with? It’s not really a choice because it’s up for the voters to decide who the biggest party is and that’s the party we’ll speak to first. If we can form a stable government that delivers on Lib Dem’s policies then that’s what we’ll do. For you though, which party do you think would the most likely to be able to help deliver on those promises? Nah, I’m not answering that because it’s not about who we prefer. If I was in favour of the Labour Party, I would go off and join the Labour Party and vice versa with the Tories. I’m not, I’m a Liberal Democrat and I’ll just keep trying to get the most seats and the most influence for our party. One thing people will worry about when voting Lib Dem here with the current voting system for general

elections, is the idea of their vote being a ‘wasted vote’. Is it time we looked to reform the election process? I think it is yes. We’ve got a different system now in Scotland in both Holyrood and local elections and I don’t see many people complaining about that system. It’s normal now and it’s stable and it represents far better how people vote. So yeah, absolutely, it’s time to change it. It seems natural for me for people’s vote to be accurately reflected. I think that’s a vital part of democracy but some people obviously find it difficult to accept that. What were you like during your time as a student and how did those experiences influence your politics?

I went to college in Paisley before it was the University and did a degree in biology there before moving on to do a diploma in industrial administration at Glasgow College, which is now Glasgow Caledonian. I got involved in student politics. At that stage I was the deputy president of the Student Assembly and I ran some of the Union side of things. I got involved with the Liberal Democrats around that kind of time as well. At the time, Paisley was hardly a hotbed of liberalism, I’d have to say, but there was a few Lib Dems around. So really that experienced my politics a lot. I was able to stand up for what I believed in an environment that wasn’t necessarily favourable to Liberal Democrats.

Cover Story: The General Election

by Derek Healey @Healey26 d.healey@tsaglasgow.com

WHO TO VOTE FOR: A BEGINNER’S GUIDE CONSERVATIVES

What they say: Expect to hear a lot about their “long-term economic plan”. The Conservatives argue that they’ve used their time in government to help reduce the deficit and get people back into work and that a vote for Labour would undo all their good work. What their critics say: That their longterm plan has consisted largely of cutting social spending to some of society’s most vulnerable whilst letting huge corporations get away with fraud, crime and tax avoidance on a huge scale. They also borrowed more in the last parliament than under the entire duration of Tony Blair’s government and the real deficit (not the yearly deficit they talk about but the overall bill for what we actually owe) has gone up massively. What it means for students: One thing this government has done really well is creating apprenticeships and graduate jobs, whilst raising the tax thresholds for the lowest earners. That means when you finish studying, there’s more likely to be decent jobs for you and your friends and a fairer deal to try and get your life on track. On the other hand, if you’re not so lucky, you might end up having to work in Poundland for your benefits.

LABOUR

likely to affect new students in a few years than anyone studying right now. Labour is a bit of a tricky one to predict and for a lot of students, might end up being just ‘leastworse’ option in terms of which party leads the Westminster government.

LIBERAL DEMOCRATS What they say: That they’d be the best coalition partner to keep the government on track. They want to bring heart to the Tories or brains to Labour. Which one they end up working with could depend largely on who agrees first to their demand of £8bn of extra funding for the NHS each year. Oh, and sorry about that whole tuition fees thing. What their critics say: They said they wouldn’t bring in tuition fees and then they did. They attracted votes based on an image of a progressive, internationalist party committed to social equality and then got into government with the Tories; probably their supporter’s worst nightmare. What it means for students: They’re probably right in terms of being a good coalition partner (if they actually get enough votes) but in reality, their only real impact on students via Westminster is likely to be that they shave the rough edges of the policies of the other two main parties. Still, that £8bn sounds nice.

SNP What they say: That the Conservative-led coalition government has been a disaster, going disproportionately after the sick, the poor and the unemployed. They argue that a Labour government would work towards a more equal society by introducing a mansion tax, a 50p tax rate and £1,600 ‘future fund’ for young people entering education. What their critics say: That they can’t be trusted with money and are altogether a bit useless. Expect to hear the Conservatives drudge up the last Labour government. David Cameron will try to make the case that a Labour government this time around would do just as badly and put us back to square one, meaning the cuts need to start all over again. Also, Ed Miliband looks a bit silly doesn’t he? What it means for students: Their future fund sounds like a good policy but it’s more

What they say: That it’s time to get rid of this whole austerity thing and look instead at modest increases to social spending to get the wheels of the economy turning again. The crux of their argument is essentially that if enough ‘anti-Tory’ parties get seats in parliament, they should work together to lock the Conservatives out of power. What their critics say: If too many SNP candidates get elected, the pressure to call for another referendum might be too great for Nicola Sturgeon to resist. Expect the unionist parties (see above) to play the fear card and refer constantly to “the party who want to destroy Britain” and variations thereof. What it means for students: The SNP’s record on education isn’t great; 100,000 fewer students attending colleges; fewer children from disadvantaged backgrounds

attending university; and huge cuts in the number of secondary teachers. Votes for the SNP will most likely come down to whether or not people think they’ve been a good voice for the people of Scotland and from looking at the current polls, a lot of people seem to think exactly that.

GREENS What they say: That they’ll tackle the issues around the cost of living. They want to look at issues around taxation, social housing and of course, the environment. They’ve also led calls to reform the electoral process and the House of Lords. What their critics will say: Whilst most of their policies sound very nice, in reality some of the ones around the environment are unachievable without totally tearing up the rule book. Natalie Bennett’s shambolic radio performance summed up criticism of

some Green candidates when she wasn’t able to explain the numbers behind her policies. What it means for students: The Greens are now the second most popular party among students and candidates have experienced a ‘Green surge’ in recent months. In reality, they’re not likely to win that many seats at this election but a strong green voice in parliament is exactly what many students will be looking to hear.

UKIP What they say: Immigration. They want less of it. They also want less money coming to Scotland; about £8bn less. What their critics say: That they’re a party made up of “fruitcakes, loonies and closet racists” and their plans for leaving the EU simply don’t add up. Many have pointed to the massive economic and cultural benefits of immigration and how leaving the EU could prompt a disaster for the British economy. What it means for students: In Scotland, practically nothing. It would be a shock if they have even one UKIP MP here. They were also the only party, despite many calls and emails to the contrary, to fail to take part in our leaders debate and answer how their policies would benefit students in Scotland. Can’t imagine why.

Feature: Festival Round-up

by Cameron Willis @CameronWillis92 c.willis@tsaglasgow.com

Scottish Festival Upon Us – Here’s the Highlights

There’s a bright light at the end of the tunnel. And it’s big, inviting and just waiting for you to join in. Glasgow’s weather may not have totally surrendered to the allure of the Scottish summer, but it’s definitely on its way. Just like that final exam of yours. With every summer comes one constant – a big messy belter of a festival season. We look at some of the top festivals that’ll be staging some incredible acts across Scotland this summer, talking about their highlights, their history and why they’ll be the weekend you’ll remember most from this year’s hard-earned Summer break. Cheers!

KNOCKENGORROCH FESTIVAL 21ST TO 24TH MAY

This is an annual festival held in the Galloway hills, and although a world ceilidh festival it also incorporates a host of different acts across a range of genres. It celebrates every walk of Scottish music. An infinitely Scottish start to festival season, why not dip into what’s to come by getting involved? The world ceilidh celebrates traditional Scots and world music, but also expect the likes of Edinburgh trio Young Fathers, infectious hip-hop act Stanley Odd and a host of DJs, who promise a range of choice in musical celebration. A weekend in the hills with quality tunes? Why no?

T IN THE PARK 10TH TO 12TH JULY

Scotland’s definitive festival. T in the Park has been going for over 20 years, and this year promises to roll them back, usher in the new and celebrate all that is good about Scotland’s major music fest. It is it’s 21st birthday after all. And this year it’s moved from Balado, to Strathallan Castle. Even more reason to go. On a massive bill, Friday’s highlights include Kasabian, Fatboy Slim and David Guetta. Saturday’s biggest booking comes in the shape of The Libertines – do not miss them. On top of that there’s Avicii, Alt-J and The Script. And on Sunday, for you to enjoy in the midst of hungover wreckage, there’s Noel Gallagher, The Prodigy, Stereophonics and Jamie T. You not got your ticket yet?

EDEN FESTIVAL 11TH TO 14TH JUNE

Eden festival is an environmentally conscious and friendly weekend that sets out four main objectives. The festival wants to involve young people and the community with all the different aspects of the festival. They want to support creative artists locally in Dumfries & Galloway and nationally from across the country. They want to bring people to Dumfries. And they want to promote it all in a sustainable and environmentally conscious way. This year has seen it spiral in popularity, and it’s all set up to be one of the best festivals this year. Grandmaster Flash headlines and there is a host of diverse Scottish creative talents, from Mungos Hi-Fi to Colonel Mustard. It’s going to be unreal.

WICKERMAN FESTIVAL 24TH TO 25TH JULY

Tucked away in the South West of Scotland at the Scottish Borders is one of the most family friendly festivals in Britain. Beginning in 2001, organisers have built up one of the most renowned and popular festivals in Scotland, being dubbed as “Scotland’s Alternative Music Festival”. Located just outside of Dundrennan, this year you can see brilliant acts from The Waterboys and Lulu to RM Hubbert and Hector Bizerk. Then of course there is the jaw dropping burning of the Wickerman.

THE KELBURN GARDEN PARTY 3RD TO 5TH JULY

Not heard of Kelburn? Where have you been. The weekend long camping extravaganza just outside of Largs celebrates music, art, culture and adventure with one of the most scenic backdrops around – Kelburn Castle. Promoters and organisers go all out, and there’s the promise of one of the best festival atmospheres across the country. Good people, good music and good vibes. They’ve not increased size this year either, so it’s a good year to get involved. With a host of acts across four stages, there’s something for everyone. They never get above their station, and offer a platform for a range of musicians. It’s for the festival goers, not for the money. You’d be a fool to miss out.

DOUNE THE RABBIT HOLE 21ST TO 23RD AUGUST

This summer festival sells itself as a “voyage of musical discovery”. With an all-including nature and a campfire glow, it brings together some of the emerging names in Scottish music and those already established. There is a big indie vibe with acts like San Francisco’s Deerhoof and Scotland’s own Fatherson and The Phantom Band leading the bill. Then there’s celtic six-piece Shooglenifty and Glasgow band The Girobabies and Colonel Mustard and the Dijon 5. Camp, sing, dance and join in on this heavily renowned and welcoming Scottish festival. It’s held at the Port of Monteith in Stirling. Get doune!

What’s On: In May

Electric Frog is back for the Riverside Festival this May

Electric Frog and Pressure are back on the 29th and 30th of May with the bigger and better Riverside Festival. The outdoor festival held in the grounds of the mesmerising Riverside Museum is back for its third year bringing with it a wealth of the most talented artists in electronic music.

Since the partnership of these stalwart Glasgow promotErs, the Riverside Festival has been their biggest party of the year. Starting in 2013 as a one day event they continued the following year with a two day event held at the start of summer focusing on bringing the biggest DJs in the world to Glasgow to start the summer parties. This year brings an exciting new addition on the Saturday as Cocoon take over two stages for the full day bringing a touch of Ibiza to the banks of the Clyde. Being one of the most popular events during the Ibiza summer season put together by Saturday headliner Sven Vath for the past 15 years in legendary club Amnesia. Well known for creative parties and after parties alike, this is an exciting addition to the festival and brings a brilliant new overall dynamic. On the Friday, German techno heavyweights like Siriusmodeselektor and Len Faki bring their knowledge and

e.brock@tsaglasgow.com

experience in playing worldwide over the past couple of decades. Without these sorts of acts there might not be the underground dance scene we have in Glasgow today. Playing other stages throughout that evening are UK house acts Joy Orbison and Julio Bashmore, who have managed to create success for themselves by finding their own sound in the everlasting house scene. Scottish favourites Optimo, Slam and Animal Farm are also playing throughout the Friday to help build up the party as the sun is going down. On the Saturday, Cocoon has managed to bring some of the biggest dance acts on the planet to play all on one day where clashes are sure to be found but knowing there will always be something on for your taste throughout. “Papa Sven” headlining with a 3 hour set, the evening is sure to go down in history for the Glasgow scene. Legends of the rave and techno scenes join him with Chilean DJ, Ricardo Villalobos and Detroit powerhouse Carl Craig adding to the line-up. Other standout acts on the Saturday that are guaranteed to put on a great show are Nina Kravitz, a Russian DJ who has been making waves with her mixes for the past few years, disco collectives Horse Meat Disco and Melting Pot will also be warming up the crowds preparing them for round two. It’s not only the music that makes this festival all it is though. This year the use of The Tall Ship will be used as a hospitality venue for those needing a bit more comfort and less queues throughout the weekend. There will also be lots of top quality street food on offer and plenty of bars with beer gardens scattered throughout the site. Tickets are still on sale with a second release of weekend passes costing £75 and then £40 for each day plus booking fees. These can be found online at various sites including Resident Advisor or Ticketweb or you can also buy tickets in person at the Hillhead Book Club on Vinicombe Street, just off Byres Road.

What’s On: GCU News

by Euan Brock @Brock01 e.brock@tsaglasgow.com

GCU Students Secure European Games coverage

Students Rebecca Tracy, Harmony Maijer, Ryan Bounagui with John Cullen

Three lucky students have been chosen to travel to Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, to help broadcast the first ever

GCU Professor of Social History, Peter Kirby, has received a prestigious Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship and substantial funding from the British Cotton Growing Association to aid a 16-month study on the statistics of child labour in cotton textiles in the North West of England between 1851 and 1911. With debates continuing to this day on whether legislative steps taken by Britain to regulate the employment of children in industrial production was effective, this study will examine how this and changes in technology changed the level of child workers in the textile industry. By compiling detailed maps of county demographics, including child labour by parish, occupation and age, this study will be used in larger projects of national statistics. Professor Kirby said: “The research will be carried out in collaboration with historical demographers at Cambridge University and will provide findings of value not only to historians but also modern development economists working on the economics of child labour. As such, the project really does connect well with our University commitment to the Common Good.”

European Games. Multimedia Journalism students Ryan Bounagui, Harmony Maijer and Rebecca Tracy have been recruited

by broadcasters International Sport Broadcasting (ISB) to help produce 1,200 hours of coverage. This will include the opening and closing ceremonies, daily highlights and live coverage of the semifinals and final. Ryan, 22, from Glasgow, said: “It’s incredible to be given the opportunity to work on the first Games and at an event of this magnitude, which will be broadcast to the masses. I’m hoping this will be the next step in my career following graduation.” The multi-sport event expects to see around 5,400 athletes take part from 49 Olympic nations and is being organised by the European Olympic Comittees. John Cullen, BBC and Olympic Broadcasting Service commentator, has said: “I’ve been fortunate to report on some of the greatest sporting events and I am thrilled that students from GCU will have the same opportunity. The students will serve the story rather than be the story and I look forward to seeing their coverage.” The students will be making the 2,500 mile trip to be ready for the competition beginning on 12th June.

Honorary Degrees for Ex-Ministers

Former First Minister Alex Salmond receives honorary degree

by Euan Brock @Brock01 e.brock@tsaglasgow.com

The University of Glasgow awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of the University to the former First Minister, the Right Hon Alex Salmond MSP, on the 21st of April. After receiving his award at the Bute Hall in the University, Mr Salmond went on to deliver a public lecture. The Principle and Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Anton Muscatelli said: “All political observers recognise that Alex Salmond is a dominant figure in Scottish politics. In a parliamentary career that spans almost three decades, he was twice leader of the SNP, and the longest serving First Minister of Scotland from 2007-2014. Higher Education was a key part of his programme for government and in spite of challenging economic circumstances his government supported the global ambition of Scotland’s universities whilst encouraging access from all who had talent and ambition to learn.” Mr Salmond said: “I’m absolutely delighted to receive this honour from the University of Glasgow – one of Scotland’s most distinguished institutions, which has truly shaped the world we live in throughout its history.” The University of Glasgow went on to also award ex-Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, an Honorary Degree of Doctor on the 29th of April, which was presented in the Sir Charles Wilson lecture theatre. Professor Anton Muscatelli said: “An MP from 1983 until he decided to stand down this year, Gordon Brown was the longest serving Chancellor in modern times, from 1997 until 2007, before becoming Prime Minister from 2007-2010. His intervention during last year’s Independence Referendum was widely viewed as pivotal.”

The Big Interview: The Maccabees

by Joanna Mullan @joannamullan j.mullan@tsaglasgow.com

Due to the success of your 2012 album Given To The Wild, did you feel any stress or pressure for the next to do just as well? No more than between Colour It In and Wall of Arms. The pressure is to improve on the last effort. Not make the same mistakes and make more of the things you thought were successful the last time around. And in terms of its success it’s so out of your hands. So we make something we’re happy with and hope it makes sense to other people. Orlando, we loved your artistic side project ‘Young Colossus’ which was a storybook illustrated by Robert Hunter, released alongside a 6 track EP. Have you guys worked on any other side projects in between recording? No there’s been no time. But I see Rob now and then he’s been making some beautiful work recently that’s well worth a look. You guys have been regulars at Reading & Leeds Festival and are expected to return this year. What has been your strangest festival experience so far?

THE

MAC

C AB

EES

Breaking their three year silence, London rockers The Maccabees are preparing for the release of their forthcoming album. Details have yet to be spared, but with the guys treating us to a small taste of what to expect in the form of their new single ‘Marks To Prove It’, we only expect great things. With an exciting and upbeat sound, the eagerly anticipated single release seems to be going down a storm since being released on iTunes and with the video uploading to Youtube last week. The talented bunch are made up of Orlando Weeks, who’s singing is just about as cool as his name, Felix & Hugo White on guitar, Rupert Jarvis on bass and Sam Doyle on the drums. With a number of exciting times ahead, such as their album release, UK tour, festivals & playing in the States, we caught up with the band for a chat to see how they are getting on. Hey guys! Before releasing ‘Mark’s To Prove It’ last week, we hadn’t heard from you in a few years since ‘Given To The Wild’. How have you been? Alright thanks. Glad to have the record finished and nice to be puting the finishing touches on all the artwork. It appears you have made a lot of people, including myself, very happy about breaking your silence – how do you feel about receiving such a positive response to something you guys have spent so much time and effort on? To be honest it’s a relief that what we think is good in the bubble of the studio makes sense out in the real world. Now, going way back (3 albums ago), we hear that you chose your memorable band name by choosing a random word from the bible. An interesting approach – What made you come up with it? I think our thinking was probably along the lines of ... the bigger the book the more words it contains, the more possible band names ... I’m sure we tried other books but I’ve no ideas which ones.

How did everybody meet? And when you formed the band did you see yourselves achieving this success? Well some of us are brothers. Some of us are school friends or the brothers of school friends. All of us lived around Clapham Common. We started playing together because we wanted to do something and make something.I’d been quite happy being lazy till I was about 19 then who knows ... maybe I lost my tele remote and thought ... better go and do something else . From your first album Colour It In until now, it sounds as if you have played around with different sounds with each song complementing the last. Do you feel as if your musical direction has changed and if so, was it on purpose? We’ve learnt on the job . Other than Fe this was all of our first times in a band and we’d hardly played. Hugo told me his mate (Ru) knew 3 songs on the guitar and that was more than enough to guarantee him a place in the band. So we’ve changed at the rate that our musicianship and developing tastes have allowed us.

Rob got lost between Reading and Leeds once and was no where to be seen 10 minutes before our stage time. This was going to be our biggest show ever to thousands of people. So we were going to be forced to blood a mate of ours who’d bravely said he’d help if he could. Poor old Els what a hero. Anyway that was a fairly strange experience. After doing a few tours in the past and preparing for such a busy year, you must be used to travelling. Where would you consider your home away from home? Home is home there’s no substitute. You can find comfort in other places and with good people but it’s never quite “home.” What is the best piece of advice you have ever received, and for those aspiring musicians out there, what advice would you give? I’m sure I’ve been given some great advice but I’ve got a useless memory so ... I do remember Richard Hawley once told me a story about a father bull and a baby bull and a field of heifers. But it’s his line so you’d have to ask him. But what he was getting at was patience. I think? You are returning to Glasgow this May to play an intimate gig at the O2 ABC Academy. We have to ask – what is your favourite thing about Glasgow and how did you find your experience the last time? There are a few favourite memories. I remember going to an Alisdair Gray exhibition one year in the basement of a Russian restaurant and then trying borscht for the first time. That was pretty good. The worst idea I had in Glasgow was buying a BBgun. I thought I’d do target practice in the venues on tour. What actually happened was a terrifying arms race. Everyone on the bus was armed with the things. If you got out of your bunk you were taking your life in your hands. We can imagine you are excited to play your new material live – for those looking to buy the album and for tickets to see you live, can you describe to them what they can expect? The album is our best yet and we hope the shows will be a real celebration of the work that’s gone into the record. The Maccabees are playing at The O2 ABC Academy in Glasgow on Tuesday 12th May.Tickets are available online from www.ticketmaster.co.uk or www.o2abcglasgow. co.uk or you can get them directly at the O2 ABC Academy on Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow City Centre. Tickets cost £25.75 inclusive of booking fee, but for such a big band at such a small venue, tickets are going to go fast!

The Lighthouse is Scotland’s Centre for Design and Architecture, an exodus from the buzzing city centre atmosphere. Located in Mitchell Lane, The Lighthouse is the perfect platform to promote and celebrate design in all

of its forms through an eclectic and exciting programme of exhibitions and events throughout the year. As the first public commission was completed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the complex permanently hosts the Mackintosh

Interpretation Centre – celebrating the life and works of Glasgow’s most celebrated designer – and in May presents Fresh AIR, showcasing jewellery and silverware fron the Artists in Residence at Glasgow School of Art and Edinburgh College of Art. This month sees the return of the annual Lighthouse Late, an evening celebrating Scotland’s creative industries on all five floors of the complex, on Friday 29th May. The building transforms into an enormous social space combining the best of design, fashion, live music and workshops. There to perform an exclusive stripped-back set is the colossal Prides; the Glasgow-based trio create infectious, uplifting synth-pop, and TSA was lucky to catch them for an interview last year. Since then and following their epic performance at the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony, they are fast-becoming the band everyone is talking about, with huge singles including ‘Out of the Blue’ and ‘Messiah.’ Having headlined the BBC Introducing stage at Reading & Leeds last year, this may well be the last chance to see Prides in such an intimate setting. Joining Prides is up and coming singer-songwriter KLOË, tipped by Spin, BBC, and DIY as “one to watch.” The Glaswegian pop star plays Lighthouse Late before her appearance at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend and is set to really come into her own in 2015. More speakers and acts are set to be announced in the coming weeks. Lighthouse Late is the ideal opportunity to celebrate Glasgow’s flourishing arts scene in such a beautiful and iconic complex. Showcasing innovative Glaswegian design and hosting Scotland’s finest musical acts, Lighthouse Late is not to be missed. Tickets cost £15 and are available on The Lighthouse website.

It’s a Charity Variety Night for Radio Lollipop for this exceptional charity on Friday 29th May. The historic placing of the venue dates back to the 30’s as a quality entertainment bar and now looks to continue these traditions. The night will see fabulous entertainment from drag queen Ciaran O’Connor aka Showna Boaby, singers Vicki Gold and William Crombie who will be singing your favourite pop song and fantastic tribute acts for the legendary Elvis Presley and Amy Winehouse. There will be a raffle on the night and tickets for this fantastic event with a worthy cause are only £5 and can be purchased at www.ticketsource.co.uk/teamlollipop.

Slide the City is coming to Glagsow Pioneering American company, Slide the City, are coming to Glasgow and bringing their enormous slip-and-slide with them. The date and exact location is still to be decided but we can certainly start getting excited over the prospect of a 300 metre (three football pitches!) slip-and-slide being laid across part of the city. There is a need to come prepared with your swimming gear, water pistols and water balloons for one of the biggest water events you are likely to see while still being suitable for the full family. As you know, in Glasgow we are never guaranteed nice weather, even at the height of summer, but even

if it does rain slightly it will just make the slip-and-slide faster. Along with the main attraction there will be live music, food and drinks stalls to create a lively, watery festival wonderland for a full afternoon. Ticket prices vary, with a single slider costing £10, a triple slider offer of £20 and a VIP slider of £35 which will entitle you to unlimited slides throughout the day. All prices include extra goodies that you will be able to take away with you. You can add yourself to the waiting list already by going to www. slidethecityuk.co.uk and scrolling down to find Glasgow. There are also plans to hold events in Edinburgh and Livingston.

Radio Lollipop is a charity that plays a key role in so many families’ lives across the world. If it wasn’t around kids wouldn’t be able to give a smile, making the lives of these families so much harder. The charity gives children who spend most of their lives in care at hospitals across the UK, Australia, New Zealand and USA a bit of normality by allowing them to request their favourite songs, hear their voices on the radio and win all sorts of prizes. The team puting on the variety night aim to raise money for the Yorkhill Children’s Hospital section of the charity in the West End of Glasgow. The Storm Bar on Dumbarton Road is hosting the variety night to help raise funds

HOW TO BAG YOUR DREAM JOB

“My English teacher, recognising my interest in writing, asked if I’d thought of journalism as a career.” In raising my horizons, she did what every good teacher should do. I already had an interest in current affairs, so from then on journalism became my focus. I had a place lined up on the journalism course at Napier College (as it then was), which had a good reputation. In the end, though, I chose a general degree at Glasgow University. A key draw was the student newspaper, the GU Guardian, which was well regarded. I went straight from university into DC Thomson, the publishers of The Sunday Post. They had a good reputation for giving young journalists a start.

My career has been almost entirely in broadcast news. I left the Sunday Post after a year when I got a place on the BBC News Trainee Scheme. At BBC Radio Scotland I became a jack-of-all-trades; sub, duty editor, producer, sports correspondent, reporter, presenter. STV asked me to join them and I have worked as a reporter and producer, but mostly as a presenter.

Most days I arrive for the lunchtime editorial meeting where the progress of the day’s stories are discussed. That’s followed immediately by the Scotland Tonight planning meeting. Depending on the day, the afternoon can be taken up researching stories, pre-recording interviews etc. My day intensifies from 4pm with promotions to be recorded for both the STV News at Six and Scotland Tonight. Then the focus is on the News at Six. As soon as I come off air from that, I’m reading into the stories we are covering on Scotland Tonight. There may be other pre-recorded interviews. We rehearse at 9pm and the guests arrive typically around 10pm.Each day can vary in intensity, but much of it is taken up by

researching the stories we’re doing on both news and Scotland Tonight.

The best part of my working day is when we are on air. That is when all the work done by the team comes together and there is the buzz of live broadcasting. When the day is winding down for most people, we have to be at our peak. I’ve never especially enjoyed working evenings, but Scotland Tonight makes it worthwhile.

There is much more to getting a news programme on air than people realise and it is a team effort. While newspapers can be partisan, news broadcasts are required to be impartial by the terms of their broadcast licence.

Your degree and course work are the base line from where everyone starts. What’s going to make the difference is what you have done in addition. Once you’re in, make the most of every opportunity, keep learning and put these lessons into practice. Journalism has changed. There were more publications when I started, but the internet has made it much easier to get your work out there. I would say that the best ones, those with real talent and drive, will always make it through.

What’s On: In May

by Courtney Hendry @courtneysarahx

Knockengorroch World Ceilidh Festival One of Scotland’s original greenfield festivals, Knockengorroch World Ceilidh, is returning for it’s 18th year in the hills of Galloway with a brilliant line-up – including the 2014 winners of prestigious Mercury Award, Young Fathers. Since 1998 the festival, which is set in an ‘accessibly remote, beautifully jaw dropping location’ in the Southern Uplands, has featured music of all genres, with a specific focus on ‘roots’ music along with plenty on things to see and do. Katch Holmes, one of the festivals organisers, believes the variety of events at the festival is what sets it apart from others: “The diversity of our programme, in music, arts and workshops, has led some to compare us to a mini Glastonbury, and for our size we certainly manage to pack a lot of amazing artists in, from contemporary dance to bee-keeping workshops to ‘break core’ beats.” The festival has tripled in size since it began and now has a respected reputation in the music industry as well as among the festival goers who, according to Katch, return time and time again to the event. She added that to celebrate the people who have grown up coming to the festival, they decided to have a ‘coming of age’ theme this year. Young Fathers (who will be taking to the natural amphithaeter in the hills on the Saturday night) aren’t the only highly-anticipated performers at this years event. Legendary Glasgow sound system, Mungos Hi Fi, will be

playing – along with other established dance acts such as Scratch Perverts, Shooglenifty ( inventors of the ‘acid croft’ genre), Peatbog Faeries and the London Afrobeat Collective. Katch’s own personal recommendations include all of the main established names, along with Peatbog Faeries, who are “Knockengorroch favourites”, and Aziza Brahim who is from the Western Sahara and performs a unique form of desert blues with Spanish, Venezuelan and Cuban influences. Although the UK has such a large festival scene, Katch is keen to encourage people to give smaller events a chance, saying: “Mainstream festivals need to appeal to a wider audience – this means you are less likely to find the performers that haven’t been discovered yet. We work closely with all our artists, many who are or have become personal friends and this close connection to the scene, with our ears to the ground, means we feel the waves of innovation first. “Large festivals only book the big famous names. That’s fine if that’s what you like – but if you want to discover something new, if you want to be on the cutting edge of culture, smaller independents are definitely the way to go.” Three day weekend adult concession tickets are available from £90 (rising to £95 for non-concessions), four day concession tickets £100 (£105 for non-concessions).

Introducing: Sloth Metropopolis

Sloth Metropopolis at Doune The Rabbit Hole in 2014

If Knockengorroch sounds like your kind of thing but you can’t make the festival, check out Sloth Metropopolis, the ‘progressive-folk-rock’ band are the exact kind of band you might discover at the festival. They formed back in 2012 and according to lead vocalist, Calum Calderwood, came up with their unusual name after a friend of the band said he felt like ‘the sloth of the metropolis – a sloth who lives in a city with so much life around them but does nothing but sit around all day’. For those unfamiliar with Sloth Metropolis, Calum describes their sound as, “story driven, guitar-less rock with bits of folk, prog, psych and whatever else takes our fancy.” The band have released two E.P’s, “Departure” and “Work”, along with mega-single “Attack” and all of their music is available as ‘pay-what-you-want’ via bandcamp. They will be supporting Earthless at Audio on 25th May.

#MonThen

Satire. If wielded correctly, it can be a very powerful tool. If you can poke fun at something, whilst maintaining the seriousness of the situation, you can really engage people with the subject in a whole new way. It makes light of dark, brings real issues to the fore, and helps heal bitterly sore wounds. That is, if you don’t take it too seriously. Launching last month, TheSteamie.net is a fake news and satire site based in Glasgow. Aptly named after the infamous Glaswegian gossip house made famous by Tony Roper’s play. It’s a much more localised and much less specialised Wunderground, and a much less financed Onion. It uses a Glaswegian news voice, and tries to engage with young people across the city and across the country. It is by its own admittance a satire site, but that isn’t all that it is. It merges the traditional ideals of this kind of wit with what the people behind the whole operation describe as “absolute absurdity”. Stories are regularly unfounded and manic, but also hilarious. And what’s more, it’s all about getting people involved. It wants to engage young people with the issues of the day, but it also wants them to connect with stories on culture, stereotypes and ideas – but more importantly, just have a laugh. They don’t want to scare people away by being

overly political – only when the time is right. It’s primarily there to make people smile. After all, life’s too short. With snout handed fist shaking fishwife Jeannie as it’s iconic logo, it hisses at mainstream news, and laughs off accusations of being too risqué. If you’re offended by the light-hearted content, chances are, you’re one of those miserable types who are offended by most things. Someone’s tax disc out of date? Better phone the polis. Immigrants moved into your street? Better phone Nigel Farage. There’s been steam gathering behind it for a weeks, and it continues to grow. Stories are getting sharper, funnier and more direct. They’re solidifying that voice and direction they yearned for before. They’re starting to have that influence. Written in a sarcastic and overly tabloidistic way, the whole thing’s designed to poke fun at traditional media. It leans to the left, but isn’t afraid to attack it either. It wants to be a nuisance, to devilishly annoy the powers that be. And what’s more, the entire thing’s been done on a budget of £0.00. It’s an example of how 21st century social media can be an invaluable tool to get your message out there on a shoe string budget.

The Steamie is by no means the complete package – but it’s an effort. It doesn’t have money, you can see that. But it does have a purpose. It wants to raise issues with young people without being mundane. It wants to attack those that falsely represent them. And it wants to unleash a tirade of ridiculous patter to make us all laugh. And that’s worth a lot more. Like the Facebook page The Steamie and follow them on Twitter @SteamieGlasgow to get involved. What are you waiting for?

Let’s Review: Squid and Whale

Tucked neatly into Glasgow’s Great Western Road, Squid & Whale has been churning out some fine Mexican cuisine to Glasgow locals for the last few years now. Much more than just a restaurant, Squid & Whale offers a bar that focuses on creating a very modern and welcoming atmosphere, with décor like nowhere else, and beer that means you’ll never want to leave. Come the weekend, they offer nights that act as a platform for some of Glasgow’s best up and coming DJs, setting people across the city up for a big weekend in this fair city. Given the rising popularity of Mexican food, Squid & Whale is looking to establish itself as a front runner in Mexican cuisine in the city. And not in the churn-this-out-getthe-money kind of way that its takeaway counterparts have taken on. It’s offering good Mexican food, at very reasonable

prices. I just so happen to love Mexican scran, so I settled in very quickly. I had a venison and chorizo burrito (£8.95) (that’s right, a venison and chorizo burrito). Stuffed to the brim, the service was quick and accurate, and I proceeded to tuck right in. An exciting peculiarity, the strange combination of venison with Mexican spice really worked, offering a new and eccentric take on an old Mexican classic. My partner had a Chicken Quesadilla (£7.50) in a traditional Mexican mole sauce. I tried one of the flattened wraps and was similarly excited. The chicken was nice and soft. The mole was rich and flavoursome. The food was just spot on. So often Mexican food can be flavourless and stodgy if not cooked properly, but these guys thankfully knew what they were doing. We shared a plate of nachos too (£5.50),

by Cameron Willis @CameronWillis92 c.willis@tsaglasgow.com

and in standard Mexicano style, they pushed the boat out. No stinginess on toppings, no stinginess on quantity. Just tasty and well-presented nacho madness. Then there was the delicious side salad that comes as standard. Crisp, crunchy with a delicious dressing. And I haven’t even mentioned the beer. They’ve got an array on sale, but I stuck to a personal favourite, Wiehenstephan. This German wheat beer is gorgeous – and what’s more, they do it on tap. Get down to Squid and Whale. It doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, and the staff are friendly, the crowd welcoming and the food serious. It wants to make wholesome, tasty, Mexican deliciousness. And it succeeds wholeheartedly. Full menu and drinks list is available at www.squidwhale.com

OUR PICK MAY 2015, ISSUE 9

OF THE MONTH

It’s no great secret that Scotland’s music scene is a thing to be proud of. So here at TSA, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to present you with our monthly pick of who we think are doing epically well in Scotland right now. Keep your eyes out for these up and coming bands. This is TSA’s ‘Pick of the Month’.

ALBURN Glasgow is famous for its local music scene in which bands, covering a wide variety of genres, are playing constantly and finding various degrees of success. One such band are post-rock outfit Alburn, featuring Pete Duthie and Gee MacPhee on guitars and vocals, Chris Hunter on bass, and Danny Kelly on drums. Following the release of their Mouthful of Glass EP last year, the band have since toured the UK and have recently supported The Swellers on the Glasgow date of their farewell tour. I spoke to Danny about the formation of the current line-up and about the progression of the band in the time since.

How did you all come to be in the band together? I had played a show in Bathgate with my old band and Alburn supported us, and I kept in touch with them from then on. At the time they had a drummer but he left and the band became inactive until myself and Chris joined a couple years back. It was kind of weird to begin with, because Chris and I didn’t really know the other two and vice-versa. I think we’re just lucky that our personalities are quite similar.

You have released one EP in your time with the band so far. Can you tell us what the writing process was like? Writing Mouthful of Glass was really quick actually because I think everyone had so many ideas built up over the years of not playing. A few of the songs were gelled together to make one final song and I wrote a guitar and vocal part which I’ve never really experienced before. One of the songs in particular uses lyrics and melody from a really old Alburn demo before I had joined. It was a different experience to what we were all used to I guess, which kept it interesting.

25

After your UK tour and recent support of The Swellers, things are going well for Alburn. What are your plans for the future? We’re going to play some more shows throughout the year and try to have our name heard. We’d love to be touring constantly but we all have jobs outside the band and sometimes that takes the lead role for a while, so we’ll see how we get on. Playing big shows like The Swellers one is cool but it’s hard to get on shows like that as most agents or promoters tend to bring a touring support now (or at least that’s what we’re told. Maybe we’re just rubbish?). The main objective for us is just to keep writing music and have fun. If people enjoy what we do and come and watch us then that’s a reward to us. Finally, what is your favourite song to play live? Hard question! I guess I look forward to playing The Nurses Can’t Help Me the most because I get to hit the drums hard the whole way through. Mouthful of Glass comes in a close second but sometimes we are so loud when we play that track, I lose my place and have to lock eyes with Chris to know where I am, which is kind of awkward. If you haven’t already heard of Alburn, then I would definitely recommend listening to the two songs Danny mentioned. However, I would also add Golden to that list. Alburn are full of huge sounding guitar riffs and feature plenty of heavy, hard-hitting tunes. If you are looking for a Glasgow-based band to listen to anytime soon then you should definitely make a point of checking out Alburn.

What’s On: LGBTI

According to the National Aids Trust, the number of people living with HIV has doubled in the past 10 years. No-one likes talking about sexually transmitted infections. Whether it was enduring ham-fisted safe-sex lectures in school or those terrifying adverts that used to be on TV, we’ve been conditioned to recoil at the very mention of the repercussions of unsafe sex. But for anyone in the LGBTI community especially, avoiding the issue of contracting STIs is out of the question. We are often the most vulnerable when it comes to STIs – particularly gay and bisexual men – and between not getting the relevant support and negligence, the rates of STIs are increasing. While some STIs – chlamydia, gonorrhoea and genital warps – are treatable, the severity of unprotected sex cannot be overstated. Perhaps it’s because the 80s and 90s feel like a lifetime ago to our generation, but it’s easy to be complacent and overlook that HIV/AIDS are still present in 2015. Although much progress has been made in terms of treating HIV/AIDS with retroviral drugs, the illness is still a threat and must not be forgotten. According to the National Aids Trust, the number of people living with HIV has doubled in the past 10 years and while over half of all people living with HIV are aged between 30 and 49, there are significant numbers of young people now living with HIV. Worryingly, one in five people with HIV in the UK are undiagnosed. There are plenty of myths surrounding HIV contraction, but quite simply HIV is preventable with safe-sex practices such as using a condom or dental dam as well as lubricant. And if you’re in the Glasgow & Clyde region, visit www.freecondomsglasgowandclyde.org/ to find a venue near you that stocks free condoms. Universities and colleges often supply free condoms and lube, as well as gay-friendly clubs and bars. As for lesbians and bisexual women, they are just as capable of contracting STIs without the practice of safe sex. A survey of lesbian and bisexual women by Stonewall revealed half of those who have been screened had an STI. Diseases like herpes and Chlamydia can be prevented with the use of dental dams as well as taking precautions such as washing your hands, especially if you have any cuts or infections. There are excellent facilities that cater to LGBTI people in need of sexual health services throughout Glasgow and Edinburgh like Gay Men’s Health and The Steve Retson Project, for example, also supports gay and bisexual men. Their two clinics offer rapid HIV testing with results in 60 seconds, PEP (Post-exposure prophylaxis for sexual exposure to HIV) and free condoms. The clinic also offers hepatitis vaccinations; a service many are surprised to hear is offered but is extremely important. Men who have sex with men are more likely to contract Hepatitis A, B or

C – contagious liver diseases – but a preventative vaccine can be provided, with 2-3 jags taken in a 3 month period. Furthermore, the Sappho Service provides care for lesbians and bisexual women, offering cervical screenings, STD testing and treatment and safe-sex advice. The clinic also offers support regarding fertility, period problems and relevant counselling for any important issues you may be facing. There are reasons why LGBTI people may be less likely to want to go to a sexual health clinic; you may not be out to your doctor, for example, or you may be

worried whoever takes your test will judge you for whatever reason. The staff at clinics such as these however, are highly professional and have undoubtedly seen everything before. They are here to help in any way they can and treat every case confidentially. Your doctor does not need to be notified of any information you don’t want them to know. The tests are quick and painless, and more than anything the comfort of knowing your own sexual health outweighs the anxiety of being uncertain. If you are sexually active, then you are encouraged to take regular sexual health check ups. Whether you have multiple sexual partners or are in a monogamous relationship, the routine of visiting any of the aforementioned clinics gives you control over your sexual health. Despondency and negligence spread sexually transmitted disease but a lot can be done to prevent them. Small efforts like taking responsibility for using condoms, having regular sexual health screenings and encouraging others to do the same will allow you to stay safe and enjoy sex and dating to the fullest. www.sandyford.org/do-you-want-information-on-sexualorientation-or-gender-identity/sexual-orientation/steve-retsonproject.aspx www.sandyford.org/do-you-want-information-on-sexualorientation-or-gender-identity/sexual-orientation/womenwho-have-sex-with-women/sappho-service.aspx

What’s on at Glasgow Women’s Library? Glasgow Women’s Library is one of Glasgow’s most underrated establishments and an invaluable institution that celebrates, empowers and educates women; as well as its extensive lending library, GWL boasts an enormous number of resources celebrating the history of women in Scotland, including historical artefacts and archive materials. The initiative also provides a range of services and programmes to support Scottish women and girls from all walks of life and tackles issues regarding women’s health and domestic violence. Since April, GWL has presented the Sex in the Women’s Library Season, curating films that explore various aspects of women’s sexuality such as the conversion therapy-themed cult classic But I’m a Cheerleader! The season is open to women only and is trans-inclusive. On 2nd May, the library screens Shonali Bose’s Margarita, With a Straw, which premiered at Sundance last year. The film, inspired by Bose’s cousin, focuses on Laila, an Indian teenager with cerebral palsy who travels to Manhattan for university and explores her bisexuality. The film has won a host of awards, including the World or International Asian Film Premiere at 2014 NETPAC award Toronto International Film Festival. So rarely are disabled women of colour – never mind a disabled woman embracing her sexuality – visible in the mainstream or given the opportunity to have their stories told, but GWL gives them the perfect platform. The library also presents Turn Me On, Dammit!, a Norwegian coming-of-age comedy that won the Screenplay Award at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival. The main character, 15 year old Alma, is unashamed and empowered by her sexuality in this offbeat comedy that explores sexual politics and the inevitable double standard between sexuality in

boys and girls. A sexual encounter with a boy renders Alma a social outcast, but the film remains quirky and charmingly funny throughout. The showing is also followed by a song writing workshop. The season’s finale screening is Who’s Afraid of Vagina Wolf? An eccentric, all-female comedy, filmmaker Anna is in the throes of a midlife crisis – staying in a friend’s garage, unlucky in love – when she comes across Katia, a beautiful young woman who becomes her muse and inspires her to create an all-female interpretation of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? The screening, in participation with the Scottish Queer International Film Festival, takes place on Saturday 30th May and is followed by a Q&A. There are a whole host of events throughout the Sex in the Women’s Library Season to explore and enjoy; and of course, GWL is open all year, with workshops, services and programmes set up to celebrate and support women throughout Scotland. Their walking tours throughout the city are especially recommended.

IT’S BACK! Orange Is The New Black

LGBTI NEWS ROUNDUP Bringing you LGBTI stories from across the world It has been revealed that Vogue Magazine will feature its first transgender model in the May edition; Bosnian model Andreja Pejic is at the centre of a feature entitled “The New World,” exploring the increasing presence of gender fluidity on the runway. Her inclusion in the world’s most influential fashion magazine is another milestone for the trans community. On Instagram she revealed “If at the beginning of my career in the modelling industry or half way through it or even this time last year you told me that I would end up having a 4 page feature in American Vogue I would have probably told you ‘oh I dunno about that… so you can only imagine what I’m feeling right now.”

Is there a massive Piper Chapman-shaped void in your life? Worry not: the ground-breaking prison comedy-drama Orange is the New Black finally returns soon. After what feels like our very own prison sentence, season three is released in its entirety on Netflix from Friday 12th June, allowing us all enough time to book that weekend off work to watch it in one sitting. SPOILER ALERT: To recap, Piper has ratted Alex in for violating her probation, which may result in her back in the clink. Plus, terminally-ill Rosa got rid of season two’s main villain Vee by hitting her with a truck, there are some big managerial changes in store and Nicky may be on the brink of a heroin relapse. Making an appearance in the season three trailer is Lori Petty – who comic book nerds will appreciate as the one and only Tank Girl – who was in season two’s first episode as Piper’s reluctant friend Lolly in the Chicago prison. Season three also sees the debut of Australian model Ruby Rose as a new face in the dorm. Without a shadow of a doubt, the trailer’s highlight is seeing Big Boo sporting a bob. Life. Made. Laura Prepon – who portrays Alex – has revealed this series will give the viewers even more insight into the back story of the secondary characters, saying “One of our log lines for the show is ‘Every sentence has a story,’ and it’s totally true.” With a cast as hugely diverse and captivating as this one, it’s not easy picking a favourite character; few are funnier than Taystee, sadder than Morello or more berserk than Crazy Eyes. This die hard fan’s favourite, however, is hairdresser Sophia, portrayed perfectly by the show’s breakout star Laverne Cox. Named this month as not only one of the Time 100 but one of People’s Beautiful People 2015, Cox has emerged as a true cultural icon and has done immeasurable work for transgender exposure. Hopefully this season will see Sophia reconnect fully with her son – who grassed her in to the cops – and continue to be as funny and heartwrenching as always. There is a lot to love about Orange; for one, it is hilarious. It’s an impressive feat for a show to execute both belly laughs and darkly funny observations so perfectly, never confusing the tone of the programme or compromising the grimness that inevitably comes with a women’s prison drama. But it’s the sheer diversity in Orange that makes it stand out from every other comedy drama. The show features an unprecedented number of lesbians, bisexual and transgender women of all races and dedicates adequate attention to tell their stories. The promotion and celebration of racial and sexual minorities is what makes this show landmark television, the cultural significance of which cannot be overstated. If you haven’t seen this show, don’t worry, you have a good month to blitz the first two seasons on Netflix. But you’ll probably only need a weekend, to be honest. If anything, you’ll gain a whole new appreciation for having a bathroom door of your very own.

In the run up to the election, Northern Ireland’s Health Minister Jim Wells has faced criticism and been forced to resign following homophobic comments made during a debate in South Downs. Mr Wells – a proud opponent of same-sex marriage – claimed children of same-sex couples were more likely to be abused, stating “The facts show that certainly you don’t bring a child up in a homosexual relationship…that a child is far more likely to be abused or neglected.” This coincides with David Cameron being grilled on his commitment to LGBTI equality in relation to the possibility of a DUP/Conservative coalition and Nigel Farage using false statistics regarding foreign HIV/AIDS patients in the UK to alienate and scare voters. Iceman, one of the co-founders of the X-Men, has been revealed to be gay in his current incarnation in All New X-Men. The queer superhero is relatively new to comic books, following the disregard of the Comics Code Authority’s strict censorship which disallowed any explicit themes of homosexuality. But there are now many examples of LGBTI representation in superhero comic books. Joining the ranks of Mystique, North Star and Tank Girl, Iceman’s revelation proves comic books are the perfect platform to explore gay themes and characters. The White House has released a video in support of banning conversion therapy, a treatment which aims to ‘cure’ gay and transgender people. In response to an online petition, President Obama called for an end to conditioning minors to endure the treatment, with the video description reading “As part of our dedication to protecting America’s youth, the Obama administration supports efforts to ban the use of conversion therapy for minors.” Conversion therapy is legal in the UK but has been deemed “potentially harmful and unethical” by NHS England and the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Students at Edge Hill University in Lancashire better get ready to lip synch for their lives: the university is launching the first ever Drag Studies course in January 2016, which will explore the relationships between performance, gender, sexualities and identity, as well as approaching topics like drag performance, HIV/AIDS and costume from an academic perspective. The course sounds thought-provoking and amazing fun, giving the art form the cultural significance it deserves. Drag queens, for example, were the primary proponents of the gay rights movement in the 60s and should be celebrated. There are simply too many RuPaul quotes to choose from to conclude this story.

Let’s Review: The Lansdowne

by Jonny Stone @jonny_stone_ j.stone@tsaglasgow.com

The Lansdowne Bar & Kitchen The West End feels over-populated with restaurants at times, especially on the busy main streets; some places, however, bring something a little special and stand out from the crowd. Lansdowne is located, conveniently, on Lansdowne Crescent, a quick walk from Great Western Road. The short but significant distance from the hubbub of such a busy area gives the restaurant a welcome isolation, proving to be a real hidden gem. Given the fact it is a basement restaurant – tucked away and charmingly unassuming from the outside – in a residential area, Lansdowne is amazingly spacious and well-lit. Somehow the restaurant is homey and relaxed while polished and refined, which is arguably difficult for an eating establishment to accomplish. Old school R&B plays, adding hugely to the restaurant’s overall laid-back environment. The restaurant boasts a beautiful conservatory, the Glasshouse, situated at the back. We arrive on a sunny Sunday evening, which lends itself perfectly to the Glasshouse. Bright and airy, the Glasshouse is available for private functions and would be the perfect location for the graduation dinner your parents have been nagging you to organise. I order for my starter garlic sautéed mushrooms, served on toast, drizzled with balsamic vinegar and garnished with

rocket. Delicious and ample for a starter, the garlic works perfectly with the mushrooms and is certainly delicious and moreish. My boyfriend orders white bait – served in a rustic little bucket – with a side of lemon and jalapeno tartar. It is terrific, with the tiny fish full of salty flavour and the perfectly crunchy texture and the tartar sauce adding a spicy kick. Thankfully there were an enormous amount in the bucket and I very much maintain a one way street approach to sharing (I can have yours, you can’t have mine) so I was lucky enough to sample them. The service, meanwhile, remains friendly and efficient throughout the meal; at no point are we rushed, and even while there are other diners in the restaurant the two waitresses check up on us just the right amount – not so much they may as well pull up a chair, but enough to ensure there is actually food on the table. For my main course, I order a pork loin served with mashed potato, black pudding and crispy green beans. The pork is perfectly succulent, complimented perfectly with a grilled apple and pepper jus and black pepper. The texture of the potatoes is perfect, with hearty chunks of spicy black pudding throughout. My partner was insanely jealous, and rightly so. Carrying on from his fishy starter, he has ordered a crab linguine; bursting with flavour, the dish is certainly spicy enough and the crab is delicious. Seafood is

wholeheartedly recommended here. The Lansdowne also boasts a huge, beautiful bar, stocked with a particularly impressive spirits menu. Dinner is ideal, but heading to the Lansdowne solely for a drink at the bar would be just as great, especially on a weekend. Furthermore, they offer great wine by the glass, a painfully infrequent quality in most restaurants. Two courses down and we are nearly too full to order dessert. I, of course, somehow muster the strength and order the lemon tart (all in the name of journalism); served with some sharp berries. The cake is perfectly tart, creamy and has a thick crust. As close to perfect as a tart can get. Starters start from £3 while the main courses are between £8 and £12, which is excellent considering both the quality of the food on offer and the overall dining experience. They also offer a small selection of dishes under 500 calories for the health conscious as well as vegetarian options. The Lansdowne may be a little out of the way, but if anything its relative isolation adds a charm to the dining experience; the staff are friendly and attentive, the food is terrific and the restaurant perfectly achieves in creating a vast, refined space that feels warm and welcoming. Overall, dining at the Lansdowne is a superb experience in every respect. It can be our little secret.

What’s On: In May & June

by Aidan Scott @bigaidan a.scott@tsaglasgow.com

Al Pacino comes to Glasgow It is not every day that you get to be in the same room as a movie star, but you will have the opportunity to do just that this month when none other than Al Pacino comes to Glasgow. One of the world’s greatest actors will be appearing at the Clyde Auditorium to talk about a career that has saw him star in films such as The Godfather trilogy, Scarface, Heat and Any Given Sunday, and win the rare triple crown of Oscar, Tony and Emmy awards. During the course of the evening, Mr Pacino will be talking about his passion for acting and directing with some previously unseen clips of times throughout his career on the auditorium’s big screen. He will take part in an on-stage interview that will focus on some of the more interesting tales of his career, such as his experience of acting on the first Godfather movie where the crew did not think he was very good, at least until he filmed the now-famous restaurant scene. The night will end with an opportunity for members of the audience to speak with Mr Pacino in the form of a Q&A session. Mr Pacino has already taken part in events like this all over the world in cities such as London, Toronto and Paris and each evening has proven to be a big success with fans and critics alike. He has even given the opportunity in previous years for fans to meet and greet him personally, although this may require a second loan! Tickets are already running out for the event in Glasgow so if you are interested in going, you better get on it soon. Tickets for An Evening with Al Pacino cost £72.80 and it takes place at 20:00 on May 19th.

The Big Glasgow Comic & Craft Fair comes to The Arches 6th June If you are a fan of comics and the wider geek culture then it is definitely worth checking out the Big Glasgow Comic and Craft Fair at The Arches on Saturday, June 6th. The fair takes place every two months but alternates between Walkabout and The Arches. While the event at Walkabout is strictly for those over the age of 18, it is good news for those of you with families this time round as the event at The Arches is for all ages and it is free as well. The latest Avengers movie coupled with the success of the Daredevil television series on Netflix will surely increase the demand further for the relative comics. While you may not be able to get the latest issues in comic shops, there will be 17 vendors at the fair, some of whom will be selling back issues and graphic novels of all your favourite

characters’ exploits. There will also be plenty of fan art and even original art available for your perusal and eventual purchase. Incidentally, this is usually a good way of finding artists for Glasgow’s budding comic book writers. And of course, there will be the usual range of t-shirts, geeky jewellery and crafts for sale, complete with some of the city’s finest cupcakes. As usual, fancy dress and cosplay is encouraged at the fair and there will be two competitions for the best dressed; one for those under the age of 16 and one for those who are older, so make sure you are dressed to impress on the day.

STILL SHOWING IN CINEMAS THE DUFF

PICK OF THE MONTH MAD MAX: FURY ROAD

Mae Whitman is the standout feature of this sharp, witty teen comedy. It tells the tale of a teenage girl who realises she’s the DUFF – designated, ugly, fat friend and the smart script does a brilliant job of making this film stand out in a sea of high-school based dramas. It’s no Mean Girls, but it is the perfect lazy film to watch when you’ve got a horrid hangover.

UNFRIENDED

Although parts of the film turn a little gimmicky and annoying towards the end, this horror film is genuinely scary – mostly because of how real it can seem at times. Using the actual social media platforms we all use, plus software like Skype and Spotify in such a sinister way is a clever technique and is why the film is so intriguing and terrifying.

CHILD 44

After a 30 year absence, Mad Max makes his triumphant return to our cinema screens with Mad Max: Fury Road. Starring Tom Hardy in the title role, Fury Road will be the fourth entry in the franchise and a sequel to 1985’s Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. This will have been music to the ears of Mad Max fans worldwide who were concerned that the new film was to act as a reboot of the character that launched Mel Gibson’s career internationally. Fury Road’s premise sees Max meet a woman called Imperator Furiosa (played by Charlize Theron) who wishes to cross the desert. However, Furiosa is on the run from a gang led by Hugh Keays-Byrne’s character of Immortan Joe, and of course, only Max can help her escape him. The trailers indicate that there will be some trouble along the way for Max though, as he appears to be suspended above a truck inside a cage for at least one part of the film. Of course, there will be a significant portion of the

audience who will have little interest in the film’s story. Mad Max was always popular for the fact it was a car movie set in a post-apocalyptic world with some good old fashioned violence thrown in. There will be plenty of that in this movie with the trailer showing off, in some cases, literally explosive car chases across the desert. In his appearance on Top Gear a few months ago, Nicholas Hoult, who plays a character called Nux in the film, spoke of the stunts involved in making the film and how it meant he had to be shown how to act during a car crash, not only to make a good performance but also to ensure minimal injury for himself in the process. Indeed, the film’s director George Miller claimed last year that around 90% of the film’s stunts were done so without the use of special effects. One interesting thing about this movie, aside from the action, is that there could be little in the way of actual dialogue. At San Diego Comic-Con last year, Miller said that he wanted the film to be one big continuous chase and for the audience’s focus to be firmly on the visuals. This suggests that the dialogue you hear in the trailers may be the only words spoken for the duration of Fury Road. While this may put newcomers to the Mad Max franchise off coming to see its latest entry, it is unlikely that fans of the previous three movies will be bothered by this and will (hopefully) enjoy Fury Road for what it is. Before the film has even been released, there has already been talk of a sequel to this movie called Mad Max: Furiosa. Indeed, Hardy has revealed that he is contracted to play Max in three more films after the release of Fury Road. Clearly, the film’s backers and the studio are anticipating the movie to be a success so why don’t you judge for yourself and see Mad Jonny Stone Max: Fury Road on its release day @jonny_stone_ on May 14th.

Book Corner

EVERY FIFTEEN MINUTES GEORGE THE POET: SEARCH PARTY

With such talented actors involved, we expected way more from Child 44 but it was simply too long, too dull and too dreary to keep our attention. Although it was visually-impressive, it feels like another classic example of a film trying far too hard to match the best-selling book it is based upon and of course, miserably failing.

The incredible twists and turns in this bestseller will have you recommending this to the random lady next to you on the train. It gives an insightful glimpse into the mind of a sociopath – just wait until you find out who it is.

No matter what stage you are at in your life, you will be able to resonate with at least one of the thought-provoking poems in George The Poets first collection of poetry. It’s an impressive collection from the spoken word performer and we hope to hear more from him.

THE LONGEST RIDE

It’s pretty hard not to enjoy a Nicholas Sparks novel (if that’s the kind of book you’re into) as he has perfected the formula for producing bestselling, beautiful stories and the Longest Ride is no exception. Pick up a copy before the June release of the film because the books are always that bit better.

What’s On: In The Movies

We take a sneak peek at what’s in the movies this May.

PITCH PERFECT 2 (12A) Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson and Anna Camp are all back along with new addition Hailee Steinfeld in the sequal to 2012 blockbuster Pitch Perfect, which was loosely adapted from Mickey Rapkin’s nonfiction book, titled Pitch Perfect: The Quest for Collegiate A Cappella Glory. The disgraced Bellas have one shot at regaining their past glory, but only if they can triumph over the best a capella groups from across the globe and conquer the most prestigious singing competition in the world. Pitch Perfect 2 reunites much of the cast from the original movie, including Adam DeVine, Skylar Astin, Hana Mae Lee and Elizabeth Banks. Banks is also producing and directing the sequel, with the first film’s screenwriter Kay Cannon on board as well. Pitch Perfect 2 is released in UK cinemas 15 May.

Pitch Perfect 2, starring: Anna Kendrick, Elizabeth Banks, Britany Snow & Rebel Wilson

TOMORROWLAND:

SAN ANDREAS

A WORLD BEYOND (PG)

POLTERGEIST This updated version of the 1982 cult classic is once again produced by Steven Spielberg, and stars Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt and Jared Harris. Poltergeist 2015 tells the story of a young family whose suburban home is attacked by a collection of violent spirits forces. The latest trailer for the Poltergeist remake is just a ton of spooky stuff back to back. Although the plot will be almost identical to the first, the updated version spruces up all the ghostly effects, and provides a mass of CGI that far surpasses the original. Poltergeist is released in UK cinemas on 22 May.

THE COBBLER Director Brad Bird and writer Damon Lindelof have concocted something mysterious in Tomorrowland, Disney’s new live action adventure movie starring George Clooney, Hugh Laurie, and Britt Robertson. Tomorrowland is still largely a mystery, but after an international trailer debuted online, it has offered huge clues to the actual plot of the film. This is what you found out from the trailer – bound by a shared destiny, former boy-genius Frank (Clooney) and Casey (Britt Robertson), a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity, embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space known only as “Tomorrowland”. What they must do there changes the world – and them – forever. Tomorrowland is released in UK cinemas on 22 May

Adam Sandler is a sole man in The Cobbler. He provides shoe repair services in a shop owned by his family for generations. But when his equipment fails he finds an enchanted old stitcher in the basement that gives him the power to become the person whose shoes he’s wearing. The film has a body-switching premise that allows various actors, including Dan Stevens (as a wealthy club DJ), Clifford “Method Man” Smith (as a dangerous criminal), and Joey Slotnick, among others, to imitate Sandler’s shuffling walk and dumbfounded facial expressions. The Cobbler has already been released over the pond and has been panned by critics, but maybe it can do better in UK cinemas. From what we have seen from the trailers, The Cobbler doesn’t seem like Sandler’s usual gross-out comedy, but can it really redeem his downward spiral of latest releases, or will it just earn him yet another ‘Golden Raspberry Award’? We think the latter. The Cobbler is released in UK cinemas on 22 May.

Upcoming American disaster film, San Andreas, stars Dwayne Johnson as a helicopter rescue pilot who sets out from Los Angeles with his estranged wife, en route to San Francisco to save their only daughter. With a summer of superheroes and sequels hitting the big screen, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson brings an old fashion, high concept action movie to the table. This big budget disaster movie shows just what an emergency rescue pilot will do to save his daughter when a 9.0 magnitude earthquake hits California. Written by Lost executive producer Carlton Cuse and directed Brad Peyton (Journey 2: The Mysterious Island), San Andreas will hit UK cinemas on 29 May.

GIGS OF THE MONTH

A REVIEW OF THE TOP GIGS GLASGOW HAD TO OFFER IN APRIL

Meghan Trainor Glagsow 02 ABC on 8 April

Hot off the huge success of her debut album and that single, Meghan Trainor finally brings her love act to the UK. Glasgow proves to be her first ever live show of her European tour, and she thrives off the typically raucous energy of a Scottish crowd. She kicks things off with ‘Dear Future Husband,’ fronting a full band with a couple of super enthusiastic dancers. The audience is incredibly diverse, ranging from little kids to grown men and women. Clearly Trainor has a broad, universal appeal for all walks of life. The dancers are really more like cheerleaders and are so fast-paced it’s hard to keep your eyes on them for more than a second. When it comes to her vocal performance, there is little to fault technically; she sings with control and sounds nearly exactly as she does on her record. Sometimes it’s cool hearing the imperfections in a singer’s live performance, but her stage presence and personality all add up to deliver a flawless performance. For tracks like ‘Title,’ she brings out her glittery ukulele and delivers a spine-tingling acoustic performance. Girl can sing. She undoubtedly has a ton of charisma, most apparent in ‘Lips Are Moving’ and ‘All About That Bass,’ proving she has as much character to match her kitschy pop songs. With diatribes like “Who’s beautiful? I’m beautiful, that why I wrote a song about it,” she undoubtedly channels

Rustie

Glasgow Sub Club on 14 April

The legendary venue that is Sub Club played host to a hotly anticipated homecoming show for Pollokshields own trip hop master, Rustie. After a change of date and venue from The Arches, this was the final stop on the latest leg of his Green Language tour and set up to be a wild night. First up in the basement were DJs and promotors Beta & Kappa, warming up the early arrivals with an infectious house and techno mix edging into areas of hip hop bass, preparing for what was to come. Their set goes down well with the usual Tuesday night student ravers and also the loyal Rustie fans. Nightwave was up next, a close acquaintance of Rustie and regular support on the tour, her mix was clearly well thought out in getting the crowd going and building up to the main event. A well balanced use of old school R&B anthems with sub bass filled hip hop beats to build the edge on the dancefloor. As it hit 2am, the smoke machine started working into override as Rustie took to the booth under the 7ft dancefloor ceiling. The atmosphere

Beyoncé and exudes an infectious self-confidence. She develops a good rapport with the audience, with highlights including bringing a girl onstage to dance with her. It is unbearably cute and she spends a lot of time with her and ensuring they had the perfect selfies on her phone. Trainor is open and communicative; recounting stories like drunkenly e-mailing the lyrics to ‘My Selfish Heart’ to her ex-

boyfriend and ill-advised 3am texting. For an artist on her first tour, Meghan Trainor puts on a stellar performance; with her ability to write perfect pop songs, a killer voice and an undeniable stage presence. Meghan Trainor may be the whole package, and it feels we’ve only scratched Jonny Stone @jonny_stone_ the surface.

suddenly became electric as everyone flooded the dance floor to feel the full effects of the famous Sub Club sound system, leaving everywhere out with feeling cavernously empty. When Rustie drops his first bassline, the crowd start jumping along to the beat while 5 vertical green light fixtures start dancing around the booth along with the strobe lights creating stop motion vision. During the set, I turned to find the edges of the dancefloor spread with his loyal following who were rapping along to every word of his tracks “Attak ft. Danny

Brown” and “Up Down ft. D Double E” impressively not missing a beat. The crowd rocked their hands back and forth to new tracks and old like “After Light” and “Triadzz”. When the hour set was over, it came well too soon and the feel of the crowd was the want and need for more. Although it was a short set, especially for an electronic act, it was definitely a defining set with so many more ups than downs, making it a truly Euan Brock worthwhile homecoming euan_brock@aol.com show.

GIGS OF THE MONTH A PREVIEW OF THE TOP GIGS GLASGOW HAS TO OFFER IN MAY/JUNE

TWIN ATLANTIC

Come to The Hydro on 9 May

SLAVES Comes to King Tut’s on 10 May

HOT CHIP

Come to Glasgow Art School on 12 May

UK punk duo, Slaves, are ready to release their debut album “Are You Satisfied?” three years after forming and finding their impressive sound. With their punk attitude mixed with harsh blues riffs, drummer/singer Issac Holman and guitarist/ singer Laurie Vincent show their talent in creating music of this kind between just the two of them and having such an involving live set. Slaves were recently support for Interpol on their UK tour and have been nominated for BBC Sound of 2015. Their headline show at King Tut’s on 10 May is sure to be just the start of a promising future.

Glasgow’s favourite Alt-Rock band, Twin Atlantic are back in Glasgow for their biggest headline show to date at the SSE Hydro. The four-piece, consisting of lead singer Sam McTrusty, lead guitarist Barry McKenna, bass guitarist Ross McNair and drummer Craig Kneale, formed in 2007 and worked relentlessly to get to where they are today. Consistent support slots for the likes of Biffy Clyro, Blink-182 and The Gaslight Anthem helped build a passionate following. After the release of “Great Divide” last year, their headline tour is under way and the last date is the big homecoming. Expect to hear songs off their newest album but also your favourite tracks from previous albums “Free” and “Vivarium” on 9 May.

One of Britain’s most reputable and talented bands, Hot Chip, are back with their highly anticipated new album “Why Make Sense?” and have announced a headline tour for later on in the year. Before they begin that tour though, the 7-piece are playing a special one off gig at Glasgow Art School on 12 May as a sort of warm up show. Now with six albums under their belt and with little criticism on any, new songs are sure to impress the audience while old hits like “Over and Over” will get the crowd going wild.

YOUNG FATHERS

MIAOUX MIAOUX

Scottish hip-hop heroes are back in Glasgow after winning The Mercury Prize Award 2014 and are playing the very fitting setting of The Art School on 20 May. Since winning the prize, the talented trio, Alloysious Massaquoi, Kayus Bankhole and “G” Hastings have been straight back to work, writing and recording a new album which is already due for release this year. With such a large following now compared to this time last year, this gig will be full of energy from the trio and also the crowd.

Miaoux Miaoux, aka Julian Corrie, is one of Glasgow’s best kept secrets. The producer is able to create a mesmerizing live solo performance, merging improvised loops on his guitar with synths and bass. Playing songs from his debut album “Light of the North”, new tracks from upcoming releases and never being afraid to throw a remix into his set, his show at Stereo on 27 May is set to be spectacular.

There is an oft repeated statement to ‘sell in May and go away’. That has merit at many levels. For Aries, getting as much done by soon after the Full moon (May 4th) would seem wise.

Taurus

This year Mercury spends extra time in one of your key finance zones. There’s high probability that from the 1st and until mid-June, that there will be heightened preoccupation with costs, buying, selling, valuations and estimates.

Gemini Mercury’s extended stay in your sign (May 1st to mid-June) suggests you’ll need to be on your toes. Not only might there be extra journeys to make (with non-budgeted expense), but there might also be difficult relationship issues to address.

Cancer

Your sign is known for working hard to feel secure. Mercury’s extended stay in neighbouring Gemini could make this feel even more imperative this month.

It’s not abnormal for you to need reassurance. You might appreciate grand gestures but they’re not always wholly necessary. What you might need this month though is to know that someone is pulling for the longterm.

How does the cosmos affect your life? Horoscopes can show you how to have fun in love and build lasting relationships!

It’s entirely possible that someone close has reached breaking point. You could put their attitude down to the recent Full Moon. It’s as likely though that they’re fed up trying to work around a situation which you both know at some point will need to be tackled head-on.

Virgo Your ruling planet, Mercury, has now arrived in another of the Mutable signs - accentuating your need to multi-task and to look at far horizons. Yet Saturn opposes Mercury: so it’s entirely possible that however much you want to break out, perhaps obligations mean that you can’t.

Capricorn

This months Full Moon coincides with another important cycle reaching its ‘full moon phase’. This cycle involves your ruling planet, Saturn. It may be that you reach a cross-roads where loyalties are tested.

Libra

Perhaps more than any other sign, you know that relationships are business and that that they need work. You probably also know that it’s important to air issues before they become real obstacles.

Aquarius

This months Full Moon is in another of the Fixed signs and coincides with a series of aspects to which many of your sign could react. Hiatus seems more likely than not.

Scorpio

Pisces

Monday’s Full Moon is in your sign an annual event that doesn’t always coincide with a strong aspect involving Pluto (one of your ruling planets). So, these next few weeks could find you at a rich, emotional turning point.

This months Full Moon comes soon after another cycle reaches similar phase. This one (Mercury-Saturn) accents the very back-bone of your solar chart - which suggests you could reach a turning-point.

What’s On: In June

by Aidan Scott @bigaidan a.scott@tsaglasgow.com

West End Festival is th th back from 5 – 28 June You may be forgiven for thinking that summer has already arrived with some of the weather that we have been enjoying lately, but one indicator of the beginning of summer is Glasgow’s month-long West End Festival in June. The festival celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and has become the city’s biggest cultural event since its beginning in 1995, attracting over one million visitors in the years since. For those of you who may never have visited the festival before, there are hundreds of events in different venues across the west end involving music, art and performance, and many of them are often free to attend. Take Oran Mor on Byres Road, for example. The former church is known as one of Glasgow’s finest music venues and during this year’s West End Festival, artists such as Treacherous Orchestra and BBC Radio 1’s favourite new singer/songwriter from Northern Ireland, Soak, will be performing for your enjoyment. There will also be plenty of music to listen to at the Kelvingrove Bandstand. Every year, many of the city’s best unsigned bands make an appearance at this event and in many cases, these bands will go on to bigger things, so it is a chance for you to see them early in their careers. It is not just music that is on offer at the festival of course, The Stand comedy club has plenty of acts appearing throughout the month and if you fancy seeing people try their hand at stand-up comedy, you can go along to The Stand’s Red Raw nights. Kevin Bridges made his start there so you never know who you may be seeing for the first time. There is plenty for children to enjoy as well as the West End Festival prides itself on being a family friendly event. While we are speaking about comedy, The Stand will be hosting the Glasgow Kid’s Comedy Club on Sunday 7th June. Head along to the Children’s Wood on the same day and your kids will be able to have some healthy fun inspired by fruit and vegetables. There will be races for the children to take part in, live music, blind tasting of fruit and even a fancy dress competition for those who choose to dress up as a fruit or vegetable. For the animal lovers, this event will also be the only place you can watch the West End Festival’s annual dog show. If you love dancing, then you should definitely make a point of attending the family ceilidh in Glasgow University Union on Friday 19th June. Tickets cost £7 but

your children can attend for free and the night will feature the performances of some of Scotland’s finest folk musicians. And what would the month of June be without a gala day? The West End Festival kicks off with its very own gala day in Gibson Street on Sunday 31st May. Local cafes and shops are getting involved in a free music stage and market stalls. There will also be activities for children in the local primary school. My final recommendation for the West End Festival would be the Festival Sunday Parade on June 7th. Taking place on Byres Road, the parade begins at the Botanic Gardens before making its way down Byres Road and Dumbarton Road, before ending at Kelvingrove Park. The parade is always great fun for all the family and is definitely something that you shouldn’t miss if you’re attending the festival. So if you plan on starting the summer in a great way, why not attend the West End Festival and enjoy it for all it is worth. For listing and booking info please visit westendfestival.co.uk

What’s On: In May & June The Glasgow Science Festival is back for its 9th year after launching in 2007. The festival has grown over the years to become one of the largest festivals of its kind in Britain, engaging with over 50,000 people over the 10 days it is on. Taking place from Thursday 4th June to Sunday 14th June, the GSF works with its partners to create a vibrant and varied programme that will attract all ages, whether they are a beginner to the world of science or one of the experts. Glasgow contributes an incredible amount to the world of science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine, and this festival allows these researchers to showcase their work in an innovative way appealing to the public. Events throughout the festival can be placed into different themes spread throughout the two weeks. Being The International Year of Light, there is a series of events dedicated to the 150th anniversary of “Scotland’s Einstein” James Clerk Maxwell, famous for his theory of electromagnetic radiation and predicting the existence of radio waves, which future mathematicians and physicists went on to reference when putting it into practise. There will be a informative talk, film, exhibition and ceilidh to celebrate him and his achievements. If that is a bit too heavy and complex for you though, then there are a variety of events looking at aspects of food and drink you probably never would have thought of before. Let the GSF take you on a journey through Scottish food and drink, including a couple of events dedicated solely to the production and science of Gin. Need something more suitable for the full family? How about trying out some Dinosaur Hunting or Bushcraft Survival. These events will enthrall the children and probably even educate the parents as well. One for the truly fearless mums and dads out there is the Insect Eating, a daunting challenge only for those with strong stomachs. There are many more events to attend throughout the city. To see the full programme with prices and the venue for each event, visit www.glasgowsciencefestival.org.uk where you can access an online programme describing each event in detail. Bookings are being taken for events already so if there is something that appeals to you it’s better to book soon to avoid being left disappointed.

Before & After

My Cambridge Weight Loss Journey

How I Went Down 3 Dress Sizes In 3 Months When I first started my weight loss journey, one of the hardest parts was choosing the right diet for me. With so many weight loss programmes advertising on our TV’s and being promoted via social media, it has become impossible figuring out which one to choose, and which ones are... well, just a fad! It is not too often that you come across one that has been on the market for over 30 years! I started The Cambridge Weight Loss Plan 12 weeks ago, and since then I have lost 31lbs and 28inches. Here is my story so far....

My Story I’ve never been a skinny person. I’ve never been an overly large person either. But skinny was definetely not a word to describe me. In school I was always in the 11 and a half stone plus category, and although I was a relatively outgoing and confindent person, when it came to my figure, that’s where my confidence seemed to plummet. After leaving school the lbs gradually added up until I was weighing just shy of 13stone, and at 24 years old I decided it was time for a change.

Consultation With a lot of research and a reccommendation from a friend, I decided to try The Cambridge Weight Plan. Developed 30 years ago by Dr Alan Howard and it has since gained a cult following, and a tone of testimonies from other Cambridgers who have not only shed the pounds, but have managed to keep them off as well. So I decided it was time to take the first step and set up my consultation. Susan Strath (the one from those Cambridge TV Ads) is my consultant. I had an hour long consultation with her at her Glasgow office at the start of my weight loss journey. Your consultant is there for you with any questions you have, keeps you motivated throughout the week, makes sure you stay on track and conducts your weekly weigh-in’s (that support is incredibly important – especially at the start), and of course does your before and after pictures. I met Susan on Friday 13th February, where she introduced me to the plan, discussed the various steps with me and helped me decide the best place to start. There are multiple steps to the programme, with step 1 (Sole Source) starting you off on a very low calorie diet of 440-550 calories a day for a maximum of 12 weeks

(BMI Allowing). This step consists of swapping all food for three Cambridge meal replacement products a day, ranging from shakes, bars and soups – and that’s it. Simple as that. Unlike many other plans out there, which can include 2 or 3 branded products as well as a well-balanced meal, this step of the Cambridge Weight Plan consists solely of the three products (3 for a woman, 4 for a man and taller ladies 5ft 8inches and above), with no other input from you whatsoever, therefore taking all food out of the equation, which for me, is exactly what I needed.

Just Add water One of the biggest and most important elements of the CWP is water consumption! I can’t stress this enough. Water is key. Water is your best friend. Water is life. A bit dramatic I know, but it really is that important. Just drink water! The plan recommends a minimum of 2.25 litres a day, although I was drinking much closer to 3.5 litres. It will not only help you feel fuller, but it can also help reduce any side effects such as headaches and nausea, and it will literally just wash away all that yucky fat!

Weight Loss I decided to start the plan on Step 1 (Sole Source). Although replacing a balanced meal with nothing but shakes, bars and soups was extremely difficult at first, my body did eventually get used to it and enter into ketosis, which is when the body switches from being a carbohydrate-burning organism into a fat-burning one. The fat stores become a primary energy source, and because of the low calorie nature of Cambridge the person loses weight. This step of the Cambridge Weight plan pushes your body into this state of ketosis which happily helps to control the hunger. I was on Step 1 of the plan for the first 9 weeks, I was then advised by my consultant to move up a Step as my BMI was now in the “healthy” bracket. I am now on Step 2 and intend to stay on this step until I reach my goal weight of 10 stone. In the first week I lost 7lbs and just under 10 inches all over. Even though the first week is quite tough, in terms of controlling your hunger and maintaing focus, it does prove to be the most rewarding in terms of weight loss. After the first week, I was losing on average 3-4 lbs a week. You may find that during that pesky time of the month, weight loss is a little slower, or some times non-existing, due to bloating and water retention, which did happen to me. Although, I soon came to realise that the best thing to do was put that week behind me and look ahead to next week’s weigh-in, and even though during those weeks I wasn’t losing any lbs, the inches were still coming off, which was definitely a positive. Now that I am on Step 2 of the plan, I am currently taking 3 Cambridge products a day (same as sole source) but with an additional 1 portion of protein-rich food and an 80g portion of vegetables. You can see from my chart that I didn’t lose anything between week 9 and 10. The transition of having no food for so long, and then introducing it back into my diet, I did expect this. Not to mention my slight ‘cheat’ of checking the scales throughout the week, which didn’t exactly help matters, as every time I noticed my weight going up a lb I decided to go back down to step 1. I now know this was a mistake as I didn’t allow my body the chance to adapt to step 2. You can see from my weight loss in week 11, I stopped moving between the steps, and the lbs started coming off again (phew!). Before I embarked on my Cambridge journey, I was one of its biggest sceptics. However, after seeing the results on one of my colleagues, the curiosity set in. Having lost 3 stone in 6 weeks, my colleague was looking healthier and much more energetic, so I thought I would give it a try. After being on the plan for 12 weeks, and planning on sticking to it until I reach my goal weight, I am now one of its biggest supporters. For anyone who has tried endless diet’s and never seem to get the results they want, then I would definitely recommend this one. I have always struggled to stick to diets in the past, due to many of them resulting in cooking your own meals. This has always been my biggest downfall as I could never quite grasp the concept of portion control. The Cambridge Weight Plan has proved to be the perfect solution for me personally, as there is no involvement from me included. I am simply told what products to take, and off I go.

WEEKLY WEIGHT AND MEASUREMENT RECORD My weekly weigh-in and measurements took place every Monday. I prefered this day as it was the start of the week, and it kept me focused and motivated for the week ahead. My BMI was calculated based on my height and weight. My height is 5’5” DATE

The Side Effects Although Cambridge has suited my lifestyle and needs perfectly, it’s not quite for everyone. Like everything, the CWP has side effects that need to be considered before you start. The prospect of rapid weight loss is definitely an attractive one, and this can sometimes stop people from considering other factors. Possible side effects of the lowest calorie plan (sole source) can include, headaches, nausea, constipation, lightheadedness and slightly fruity breath (this is a sign you are in ketosis – embrace it). However there are higher calorie plans as an option if any of these potential side effects would be a concern. The bad breath was a constant paranoia for me personally, that’s why I kept an endless supply of breath spray in my bag and mouth wash in my desk drawer. If done properly, you can usually expect an average weight loss of a stone a month, so if you’re anything like me, which

is sick of losing 1-2 lbs a week, and (very) quickly losing the motivation and willpower to keep going, then I would always recommend this plan. Pricewise, the Cambridge weight plan costs around £44 a week, which comes in cheaper then other weight loss plans, such as Weight Watchers and SlimFast.

Colonel Mustard in and around the Barrowlands In December last year a Glasgow band with a very distinct flavour co-headlined a Barrowlands gig for Savifest. Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5 made an appearance at the famous Glasgow venue for the first time, and if you remember correctly, we ran a story about how the crowd-loving and horn blowing troupe of many where set to the play that very gig. Since then, they’ve grown in both stature and size, and now you can celebrate the gig with them – even if you missed it. Playing the Barrowlands is a massive deal. Especially to a Glasgow band. And in keeping with Colonel Mustard and the Yellow Movement’s mantra of engaging with their audience and spreading positivity through music, they’ve immortalised it on film. Colonel Mustard Live In & Around the Barrowland Ballroom is out now, and follows the band through the entire night at the Barras. It may surround the band playing the venue, but the film is about a whole lot more. The film, made by Glasgow based Walk Talk productions,

opens the doors to The Dijon 5’s long awaited night (some of the band’s many members have been waiting over 20 years for their chance to play at the venue), but also to the Barrowlands. It follows the band around backstage, interviewing them about the venue and their history with it. The documentary celebrates the Barras as a venue as much as it does Colonel Mustard’s success. It looks at the Barras history and the people that make the Ballroom possible, and invites us into finding out why playing the gig is so special to the band’s members. There’s live recordings of the band’s set, and a raucous crowd, spaced between cut scenes of backstage madness and Barrowland’s discovery. It’s funny, heartening and above all completely down to Earth. They take what they do very seriously, but when they’re on stage, nothing else seems to matter. It’s all about having fun. Try watch it and not come away smiling. Look out for some hilarious interviews with band members and other faces in Glasgow’s music scene, and a special guest

appearance for the infamous Gallowgater. The DVD is available from New Hellfire Club, Love Music and directly from the band at colonelmustardandthedijon5. bandcamp.com. Next up for Colonel Mustard is the Mickey 9s album launch on the 16th of May and then onwards to a Summer filled with slots at some of Scotland’s biggest and best festivals. Get to one of their gigs and laugh, dance and sing your wee heart out. Vive le Mustardy Revolution.

Let’s Review: In The Theatre

The Woman In Black Theatre Royal

I was bewildered upon entering the theatre as to why there only sat one stool, a clothing rail with some hangers and a wicker chest in the centre of the stage. From what I knew of this horrorcharged event, The Woman in Black, based on the novel by Susan Hill, is a tale of complete, supernatural massacre fuelled by the terrified yelps from the audience. However, the minimalist stage set within the newly renovated – and colourful – Theatre Royal looked more like something out of the Edinburgh Comedy Festival than a ghostly novel. At once, my spirits danced with relief. But it didn’t last for long. At 7:30pm sharp a gentleman appeared on the stage, face gaunt and clutching a briefcase to his chest as he steadied himself on the edge of the wicker basket. “It was nine-thirty on Christmas Eve,” he said, though barely audible due to there being no microphones. And the story began. The cast of The Woman in Black have it nailed. Sitting in the foyer, I scrambled through the programme to familiarise myself with the actress playing the role of the Woman – hoping to get some sleep that night. But she was not in the programme to be found. In fact, according to the booklet in my hand, there were merely two men in this play and no lady dressed like the colour of shadows. I felt worried – which was obviously the desired effect of the show creators. I don’t like horrors, you see. Through sometimes complex shifts between past and present in the early 1950s, Hill’s tale follows Mr. Kipps’s (Malcolm James) journey from traumatised solicitor to stage performer with the help of an actor – originally named ‘The Actor’ (Matt Connor). Mr Kipps has held the story of the woman in black close to his heart for many years. Hoping to free himself from the burden of nightmares and make peace with God, he writes his experience on paper hoping to gain performing tips to tell it with justice. Eventually his role merges with that of The Actor’s. Instead of watching the two men in a teaching environment, they become the story – The Actor playing the role of shy Mr. Kipps and the real Mr. Kipps playing every other character he encounters. Except, of course, that unexplained cloaked figure creeping at the edge of the stage… A young Mr. Kipps journeys outside of London to retrieve the will of the late Mrs. Drablow from her home across the water. Each day the tide lowers and grants access to the house, but only

52 Shades of Maggie The Pavillion If you’re at all familiar with the original show, 51 shades of Maggie, you’ll understand the trepidation I felt when taking my mum to see the hilarious but filthy, 52 shades of Maggie. I imagined sitting cringing with my poor mum beside me wondering why the hell she agreed to go but I needn’t have worried – she laughed even more than I did. In this sequel, Maggie’s best friend, Big Sally-Ann, announces that she wants nothing more than to be able to re-enact the last dance from Dirty Dancing in the local pub on her birthday night out. Problems arise when her boyfriend Igor finds himself deported and it’s up to Maggie to save the day. In her quest to do so, she ends up being followed by a pack of dogs after a fateful Zumba session, showcases every sexual position under the sun and performs a titillating rendition of The Pussycat Doll’s ‘Don’t Cha’. At times I felt a bit lost with some of the older references in Leesa Harkers brilliant script but the rest of the crowd, which seemed around 98% female, were in stitches, which in turn then made me laugh more (who doesn’t love laughing at older

for a limited time; at 5 o’clock, the tide fully rises and engulfs the passage, leading the way to a deadly marsh land. Agreeing to stay in the house to maximise efficiency – despite warnings from locals that the house is riddled with ghosts – he endures one too many encounters with an extremely gaunt looking lady with catastrophic effects. Through nothing but terrifying sound and lighting effects, the story’s horror is conveyed impeccably through these two gentlemen. The minimalist set leaves more to interpretation than most performances, especially given that miming is used frequently in conjunction with sound effects to create a real sense of being there without any visuals – for example, Mr Kipps’s has a trusty dog Spider whom we never see but are concerned about nonetheless. The sound of the rocking chair moving independently is engraved in my memory, as is the screech of the horse and cart as it fails to draw to a halt on more than one occasion. This play was excellent and genuinely terrifying. Both men are flawless throughout, balancing light comedy with straight faces and the utterly unimaginable with just as much passion. The Woman in Black reinforces that the need for extravagant sets, props and costumes is only an asset when the acting or plot isn’t up to much. Equipped with a spine tingling twist revealed just as the final curtain drops, you will not be bored throughout this masterpiece. But I should warn you, there are jumpy bits!

women falling out their seats as one woman depicts a quickie – playing both parts). It wasn’t just the various sexual encounters that Kirsty Strain, who starred as the highly enthusiastic Maggie Muff, portrayed. As it was a one woman show, she took on every character and made the near empty stage seem full with big personalities. However, with the play featuring just one actress on a very minimalistic stage – the only prop used was a marching bass drum and a giant high heel was the single piece of stage furniture – at times, it felt like more of a stand-up routine than an actual play. Although this in no way takes away from Kirsty Strain’s impressive performance, she was excellent in her delivery and single handedly kept the crowd engaged, which is no mean feat. Although the play was full of sexual innuendo and tales of hazy summer nights filled with casual sex in Largs, friendship was the concurrent theme at the heart of the show and it was heartwarming to see the lengths Maggie went to for big SallyAnne. Throughout the performance, there were a few references to Benidorm and with the third book in the Maggie Muff trilogy, “Maggies Feg Run”, being released back in 2013, it seems safe to presume that this isn’t the last we’ve heard of Maggie and Big Sally-Anne.

Exams + Studying = Stress So we’ve all made it through the challenges of the academic year but now we’re faced with one last hurdle that is getting in our way of our summer freedom: EXAMS. It would probably be fair to say that not many of us enjoy exams and this time of the year is when we all start to get a little stressed out. Have no fear though; there are many ways to handle your exam stress. The basics of stress management are quite simple and just like many other factors in life, if you eat right, sleep well and exercise regularly then you’re already on your way to a stress free exam period. Some people strive on stress as it acts as a metaphorical kick up the ass to get those books out and knuckle down but for others it does cause a lot of mental breakdowns. One of the most important things you can do when suffering from exam stress, is learn to recognise when you’re stressing out. This will allow you to develop a coping method that you can put in to place when you’re starting to freak out. A simple thing like counting to five and focusing on breathing deeply can help shift that stress. Comparisons are a natural occurrence in daily life, but it is important not to focus on your class mates abilities. Comparing the ability of your friends to yourself helps no one. When you’re studying and seem to be doing more time doodling on your page procrastinating rather than learning the process of photosynthesis, almost anything sounds more appealing than sitting with your nose in a book. That’s why exercise is great at exam time. Exercise helps

boost energy levels, clears the mind and relieves stress. Plus it’s time away from the books, so while you’re avoiding the studying, you’re also keeping fit and healthy. And by exercise, it doesn’t have to be a full morning in the gym, a thirty minute walk in the fresh air or a late night swim can help you de-stress. Now that you’ve got over the stress your next problem might be that you can’t find a way of studying that makes the most of your efforts. A study plan is essential. No more late night cramming, that only stresses you out and uses energy. Prioritise your

study plan and stick to it, make sure you schedule study breaks though to keep you motivated. Clean desk, clean mind? It’s simple but make sure your study space is tidy and large enough. Have enough space to spread things out and that everything you need for your study session is within reach. Being comfortable is also important as you’re more likely to focus on your work rather than your numb bum. But most of all, remember that life after exams goes on and it’s not the end of the world. However as I was once told, “Failing to prepare, is preparing to fail.

SHOP AND SAVE:

Best Student Discounts Students may never be rid of the stereotypical assumptions that all are irresponsible spenders who blow their loans on booze, clothes and other luxury items. However, the 2014 ‘Save The Student’ report on student finances found that spending had fallen in most categories compared to 2013, including the amount spent on ‘luxuries’ like clothes which was just £24 per month on average. As students appear to be feeling the pinch, The Student Advertiser has explored the best ways for you to save cash and make your SAAS go further. UNIDAYS Join over five million students and sign up for your free UNIDAYS account – doing so will allow you to save money at some of the biggest brands around including Topshop, Asos and Apple. Even if a brand doesn’t offer a year round student discount, they will often use UNIDAYS to advertise any student discount days – a recent example is River Island, who had a 48 hour 20% student discount event, which UNIDAYS members were alerted too with an email.

EARN MONEY BACK FROM ONLINE SHOPPING Websites such as TopCashBack.com allow users to earn money back from their online purchases when they shop via that website and last year alone £25,000,000 was saved in cash back by members of the site. Also, don’t forget that most banks are now offering cashback extra reward schemes where you can automatically earn a percentage of what you’ve spent using your card back. Simply check your online banking – or even call your bank – for details of the schemes available and you can often select the brands that you’re likely to shop with (to ensure you earn back the cash).

GOOGLE THE PRODUCT Many people, especially when searching for a present, see an item that makes them finally think ‘that will do’ and will immediately add it to their cart and buy. However, often retailers bulk buy products and simply searching the product name on a search engine can lead to you finding another retailer offering the same product – just a few pounds cheaper.

INTERNET VOUCHER CODES No matter what you are shopping for online, whether it’s furniture for your new student digs or even a holiday, always check online for a discount code. Simply enter the name of the company you’re shopping with into a search engine, followed by discount code and you will usually be greeted with discount websites showing the odd 10% off code or free shipping voucher – it doesn’t always work but it’s definitely worth a try, every little helps right?

The 10% off all year round club includes; Topshop, New Look, Schuh, Office, Jack Jones, Miss Selfridge .. (they also feature boosted discounts regularly on UNIDAYS).

Glasgow’s Best Beer Gardens – The Top 10 When the sun is shining down, there is only one place a student wants to go, a beer garden. As the weather in Glasgow has been bringing that summer feeling, we have the guide to the best beer gardens in Glasgow. 1. THE ARK Situated perfectly in the middle of Strathclyde Uni and City of Glasgow College, The Ark holds a special place in all our hearts and one of the biggest and most accommodating beer gardens in Glasgow. With its own side gate into the garden there is an upper level with long benches perfect for catching the most of the sun or down in the lower level where there are many tables, chairs and even chair hammocks tucked in the corner. There is a covered pool table letting you have a game with your friends out in the fresh air. With a good range of beers, ales and ciders on offer along with typical pub food including burgers and hotdogs, it’s a great beer garden to enjoy the sun in between the end of year studying. 2. WEST BREWERY A short walk across Glasgow Green on a beautiful summer’s day will bring you to a treasure of the city. The West Brewery has been independently running since 2006 and brews their own fine range of beer all of which you need to try. Picnic benches sit outside the entrance to the bar but if you like to sprawl on the grass with a beer in hand there is a slight hill to do just that rolling down into the park. 3. THE OLD SCHOOLHOUSE Situated at the bottom of Woodlands Road, The Old Schoolhouse, is perfect to go down to for any sport that is on or to fit in a couple of drinks before heading next door to The Stand for a night of comedy. The beer garden is situated outside the entrance and covered for those Glasgow days that don’t see the sun. With plenty of benches to fit a couple or a group and TVs outside, the cheap drink promotion will keep you there on a sunny day for hours.

The Ark

5. CHINASKIS The split level beer garden in Chinaskis makes this venue look smaller than it really is. The upper level wooden balcony has a few booths looking over the lower level concrete courtyard with tables and chairs surrounding it. They have a massive Bourbon selection to work through and interesting food menu, including deep fried pickles, this brilliant atmosphere is great to chill out in regularly. You can find the bar on North Street at Charing Cross. 6. ORAN MOR When in the West End it’s hard to miss the exchurch venue at the top of Byres Road. Although pricey, it is the best beer garden you will find in the West End with plenty of space and looking across to the beautiful Botanic Gardens making you feel a lot more out the way than you are. 7. THE FINNIESTON Bar and Restaurant, Finnieston is on the West End side of Argyll Street and has a lovely hidden south facing terrace which is always a relaxing and comforting atmosphere. Having the choice of some of the best seafood in the city or try as many measures of their Gin bar you can.

The Old Schoolhouse

West Brewery

4. BREL Down Ashton Lane just off Byres Road there are more than enough bars buzzing along it. Away in the far left corner though, Brel sits as the key of the lane when the weather is perfect. A beer garden that sprawls right the way out the back of its conservatory running uphill with plenty of places to sit whether it’s at a bench or on the grass.

8. BIG SLOPE When relaxing on the hill at Kelvingrove Park on the warmest summer days, you need that ice cold refreshing pint to continue in the sun. Well a five minute walk from the park to Kelvingrove Street and lower level bar Big Slope has that perfect cure. With a beer garden stretching round the building there is plenty of space to keep tanning while having that pit stop beer. 9. FAKTORY Perhaps the most surprising beer garden comes from Faktory on Byres Road. With a rocking bar that leads out to a DIY courtyard filled with benches, sofas and walls to sit on and catch the most of the sun throughout the day. Once the sun disappears Faktory keeps going inside serving drink up until 2am. 10. JINTY MCGUINTYS The Irish themed pub down Ashton Lane has a brilliant wee beer garden tucked round its side. With some sheltered areas and chair hammocks sitting on Astroturf and surrounded by wood chip and bark, this beer garden makes you feel like you are in a country park while you sip on a perfect Guinness.

What’s On: Games & Gadgets

by Aidan Scott @bigaidan a.scott@tsaglasgow.com

PICK OF THE MONTH THE WITCHER 3: WILD HUNT (PS4, XBOX ONE, PC)

Gadgets Galore Immerse Virtual Reality Headset Ever fancied playing virtual reality games but can’t afford to buy an Oculus Rift? Well if you are willing to play on a smaller scale, then Prezzybox.com are selling an Immerse Virtual Reality Headset. The headset works by placing your smart phone inside and clipping it in place before allowing you to play 3D games and movies. You can buy it for £29.95.

If you have already grown tired of The Elder Scrolls Online on PC or are simply bored of waiting for its console release, then look no further than the third edition of the The Witcher. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is the latest game in the fantasy role-playing franchise and will be the conclusion of the story featuring Geralt of Rivia. While the game’s story is a continuation of Geralt’s narrative, developers CD Projekt RED have said it will be completely possible for newcomers to play the game as a standalone feature. Gameplay will be similar to the previous two games but will feature some improvements. The combat system has been improved with a new witcher sense, fighting from horseback and the ability to use a crossbow, while new stealth features such as swimming underwater to avoid enemies has also been

Other games to look out for...

PROJECT CARS (PS4, XBOX ONE, PC)

For those who were disillusioned by the release of Driveclub on PS4 or who are simply fans of racing games, then Project CARS should be right up your street. The game features a role-playing element in that you create your own driver and pursue legend status in the world of motor racing. Similar to the Race Driver: Grid series of games, you can compete in a variety of motorsports such as karting, tour car racing and even one that is inspired by Formula 1 (known in this game as Formula A). You can also race online in simulated race weekends at tracks from all over the world such as Monza, Laguna Seca and even Brands Hatch. Depending on the length of the race, you will also experience a dynamic weather system that can range from glorious sunshine to terrible thunderstorms. Project Cars will be released on May 8th.

introduced. Geralt can now also jump and climb over obstacles. Some players may be worried that this will be similar to Assassin’s Creed but the developers have said it is inspired more by the climbing seen in the Uncharted franchise. The Witcher 3 features the usual system you find in role-playing games in that each choice you make affects the game world, and these decisions can benefit you or come back to haunt you later in the game. And with a map that is supposedly 20% bigger than the one found in Skyrim, The Witcher 3 is an essential buy for any roleplaying gamer. The Witcher 3 will be released on May 19th.

FARMING SIMULATOR 15 (PS4, XBOX ONE, PC)

Now before you scoff at my choice, the Farming Simulator games have proven to be pretty popular over the last few years and the new release will undoubtedly do well when it comes out. Farming Simulator 15’s career mode will place you as a farmer (surprise!) who needs to improve their farm and replace the dated machinery. You can choose to farm whatever crops you want (within reason of course, Tony Montana is not a playable character in this game) and sell them for profit. You will also have to manage livestock and the farm’s finances. You can venture to the local town and meet the inhabitants in a range of fully recreated farm vehicles, unlocking new challenges in the process. There is even an option to play online co-op with other players but only on the PC version of the game. Farming Simulator 15 will be released on May 19th.

Smart Phone Projector Also, if you like showing videos on your phone to friends but can’t crowd round the phone at once, you can buy a Smart Phone Projector from Prezzybox.com. The projector is easy to build and only requires that you put your phone inside before being able to project your videos and photos on to a wall. You can buy one for £15.95.

Sword Fighting 10

The Rules to Fencing... Have you been looking for a sport where you can inflict pain on others and flex your muscles without having to run around too much? Have you just binge-watched all four seasons of Game of Thrones and fancy yourself an expert swordsman, but want to maintain (slightly) better hygiene? Well, fencing might just be the sport for you. Firstly, any swordsman must arm themselves. Fencing has thankfully evolved from military training to a proper sport over the past few centuries, and subsequently it has boiled down to three different weapons, each of which with a blunt tip so as to avoid any severe wounds or mutilations. Foil, the more delicate of the three blades, is one of the two thrusting weapons in your armoury. To score, you must land the point on either the torso or the groin of your opponent, a rule inherited from an age when duels were to the death and therefore one would target mostly the vital organs, which is fun. Sabre is the ‘Zorro’ blade: “fencing for ogres” to quote my coach, but actually a light weapon with which fencers can score points using both the point and the flat of the blade. Points can be scored with successful hits above the waist, including the arms and head, the latter delivering a satisfying knocking noise on connection. The third is the epée, the heaviest and sturdiest in the arsenal. Epée could be described as the most relaxed of the weapons: like foil, you can only score with the point of the blade, however the fencer can hit any part of their opponent’s body, with less rules regarding right-of-way. This no-target-off-limits style of fencing also favours the sneakier amongst us – there are few things more joyous than your opponent’s rage when you repeatedly tap them on the wrist, or better still, the foot.

Weapon selected, it’s time to hone your skills. Footwork is essential to fencing, and any budding fencer should expect sore legs while getting used to the en garde position and moving essentially crab-like for sometimes hours at a time. Bladework will make up the majority of your training,

where you’ll develop your primitive lunge-and-hope-forthe-best into an arsenal of parries, ripostes, disengages and other tricks of the trade; you’ll learn, forget and eventually relearn the names for the positions of all said parries, some seemingly identical to one another. Most often, however, you’ll abandon all of this and attack furiously until you hit something. The equipment necessary for fencing is wide-ranging and can be on the expensive side. Any fencing club will have

the necessary electrics, and as for your own personal gear, you can accumulate most of this as you go. Clubs will again have the majority of the things you need, from blades to clothing and protective gear, although if you do take to the sport you may want to invest in the clothing early, so as to avoid sharing so much sweat with your peers. Breeches are often a good place to start, and while they may not be your sartorial preference, they’ll give you a bit more protection than your average trackies. Ladies will require chest armour which should similarly be available at any club, but gents will want to invest early in a glamorous protective box of their own. Trust me. A fight can be first to anywhere between 5 and 15 points; shorter fights will help stave off fatigue and aching knees, and will favour those who rely on little tricks and sneakier tactics, while longer fights allow more time to figure out your opponent’s weaknesses and force any fencer to change their game if they’re looking to win. Tall fencers may favour epée for the ability to skewer their opponent on approach, while the shorter among you may opt for another blade where you can enjoy an even smaller target area. Left-handed fencers will be in the minority, but will often find themselves the coach’s favourite, as their righthanded opponents will have far less experience fighting a leftie. With so many variables to each bout, fencing requires a flexible approach and one-trick fencers will soon find themselves trailing several points behind. Fencing might not be the first sport that comes to mind when you’re considering a new club to join, but most universities will have one and there is likely to be at least one more in your city, all of which should offer free taster sessions where you can get a feel for the sport before parting with any membership fees. Most clubs will have a huge range of skill levels and accommodate multiple blades, so you have the opportunity to both learn from more experienced fencers and have a scrap with your fellow newbies. It’s not exactly tough cardio but your muscles will get a workout, and I can promise you that you will sweat profusely from the moment you put your many protective layers on. Fencing is a hugely rewarding sport, and with regular training and several competitions a year, the sky’s the limit and there is always room for improvement. So: suit up, en garde, and stick ‘em with the pointy end.
