INFLUENTIAL PROJECTS
S H E LT E R F O R M I G R A N T S
C O N F L U E N C E PA R K
Social Organization of the shelter was most influential in my project. This informed the spatial planning of my project to have structured housing and communal spaces in the center to unite the housing.
H I N D U - PA R A C E N T E R
Materiality and restorative ecology of this case study filtered into my project. Materiality emphasised native materials. The site itself was a former brownfeild site that now incorporates various native vegetation to aid in restoring the ecology of the site. The way the site interacts with the environment was influential to my project. The arched funnels channel water into a cister below for onsite usage. Overall, the site cleans the w a t e r f o r f i l t r a t i o n b a c k i n t o t h e a q u i f e r.

Materialty and social organization were the most influential to my project. Native and vibrant materials, as shown above, not only are easy on the land but also display t h e c u l t u r e o f t h e i n h a b i t a n t s . S o c i a l l y, t h e gathering spaces are surrounded by gardens, creating calming community centers.
The reimanged housing and social organization where the two most influential factors. While my project will need parking, I admire how this project places the parking below to create space for housing above and creates a unique topography to the site. The social organiztatioin enables interaction and expression. The planning feels more organic and city-like.
CURRENT SETTING
OPPORTUNITY SEEKERS & LIVING CONDITIONS
In addition to my research of existing migrant architecture, I visually represented them t h r o u g h t h i s g r a p h i c f r o m U n d o c u m e n t e d : T h e A r c h i t e c t u r e o f M i g r a n t D e t e n t i o n b y Ti n g s Chak. These examples show how it is similar to incarceration architecture. The design of my project seeks to do exactly the opposite as to what the current housing looks like.
I n t h e l a t t e r h a l f o f F a l l Te r m , I v i s i t e d C a f e C o t i d i a n o i n S a n A n t o n i o , Te x a s . T h i s c o f f e e t r u c k supports refugees and asylum seekers. I met two asylum seekers here, named Alma and Bibi. They quickly became characters to the user experience portion of the presentation. This coffee truck was eye opening, and gave me ideas on how I could implement something similar in my own project.

PERSONAL REFLECTIONS My chosen thesis project of designing equitable transitional opportunity housing for refugees was a rewarding project in that in strengthened my knowledge further into a topic I am interested in, enabled me to think of the site on various scales due the size of the project needs, and helped me understand how a community can really benefit and interact with a project. While I have spent the last 6 years in P h i l a d e l p h i a , a p l a c e I k n o w R E A L LY w e l l i s S a n A n t o n i o ( t h e c i t y i n w h i c h m y p r o j e c t w a s i n ) . T h i s p r o c e s s , w h i l e d i f f i c u l t u n d e r v i r t u a l c i r c u m s t a n c e s , w a s i n t h e e n d b e n e f i c i a l f o r h a v i n g t h e opportunity to meet with so many knowledgeable people, despite physical distance. T h e c o m m e n t s f r o m t h e j u r o r s a l l w e r e c l e a r. I t h a n k t h e j u r o r s f o r t h e i r p o s i t i v e c o m m e n t s ( # 1 - 4 ) o n the project. I am glad that my intentions for each of these points was displayed clearly enough through the presentation. I do think adding points #5 and #6 would have strengthened the understanding of my project to the viewers. For the end result of my project, I did expect myself to produce more and with clearer graphics, but I am still proud of the work put into my senior project. Having studied climate migration and refugees/asylum seekers, I am now more aware of how the users are in different cities a r o u n d t h e c o u n t r y.
