DEPAVE A PARKING LOT TO PUT UP PARADISE REVITALIZING URBAN SPRAWL ON THE DELAWARE

NATALIE CROSS | SENIOR PROJECT 2022 ADVISOR : DON JONES

1

SINCE THE 1950s, DISRUPTIVE HIGHWAY INFRASTRUCTURE, SUBURBAN BIG BOX STORES, AND OVERSIZED PARKING LOTS SEVERED A VIBRANT SOUTH PHILADELPHIA FROM THE DELAWARE RIVER WATERFRONT. THIS PROJECT SEEKS TO REVITALIZE A SPRAWLING COMMERCIAL CORRIDOR, RECONNECT THE NEIGHBORHOOD TO THE WATERFRONT, AND BUILD RESILIENT STRATEGIES ALONG THE DELAWARE RIVER SURROUNDING PIER 68 FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE. THROUGH A SERIES OF INTERVENTIONS, THE PLAN PUT FORTH CREATES A NEW COMMUNITY HUB WITH MIXED USE HOUSING, A RECREATION FACILITY, AND AT THE CENTER, A FOOD HALL WITH A YEAR-ROUND OUTDOOR PERFORMANCE SPACE AND AMPHITHEATER FOR THE COMMUNITY TO ENJOY. WE’LL NEED BIG PICTURE THINKING TO PREPARE FOR AND ENJOY A MORE LIVABLE, WALKABLE, SUSTAINABLE, AND RESILIENT FUTURE.

AS DEVELOPERS IN PHILADELPHIA RUSH TO FILL EMPTY LOTS WITH NEW CONSTRUCTION, WE NEED TO PRESERVE ACCESSIBLE AND PUBLIC OPEN SPACES WHICH BRING INVALUABLE HEALTH AND WELLNESS BENEFITS TO CITY DWELLER’S DAILY LIVES. THE PANDEMIC SHED NEW LIGHT ON THE VALUE OF ACCESSIBLE OPEN SPACE AND THE POSSIBILITY OF UNCONVENTIONAL OPEN SPACE. CLIMATE CHANGE BEGS FOR AN AGGRESSIVE VISION FOR TRANSFORMING OUR SPACES TO BECOME MORE LIVABLE, SUSTAINABLE, AND RESILIENT. 9

FINAL REFLECTIONS | 06

THE DESIGN AND SYNTHESIS OF SOUTHWARK HALL AMPHITHEATER, MARKET, AND PARK AIMED TO RETHINK A SPRAWLING TRANSIT & COMMERCIAL CORRIDOR STANDING BETWEEN A VIBRANT SOUTH PHILADELPHIA COMMUNITY AND THE DELAWARE WATERFRONT. BUILDING DESIGN PRIORITIZED PASSIVE AND ACTIVE SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGIES, APPROACHABLE BUILDING MATERIALS, DETAILS TIED TO PLACE, AND FLEXIBLE DESIGN TO WORK FOR A VARIETY OF FUNCTIONS AND SEASONS. THINKING INTO FUTURE DEVELOPMENT, THE PROJECT CAN DREAM UP MORE CONCEPTS FOR DOME DEPLOYMENT, FINE TUNE GEOTHERMAL WELLS TO HARNESS THE WATER’S THERMAL PROPERTIES, AND REWORK DETAILS AT ENTRANCES TO IMPROVE FLOW AND MAKE THIS PUBLIC SPACE EVEN MORE INVITING AND ACCESSIBLE TO ALL.
