SITE SELECTION
NEW YORK
Philadelphia Navy Yard The Navy Yard site benefits from direct proximity to interstate I-95. This places it between the major cities New York and Washington DC. While this makes the site more accessible to people traveling from all over the East coast it also benefits the site through exposure. Meaning that even if you are not going to the park you will still have the visual connection when driving past it sparking curiosity in both racing as well as Philadelphia. This could lead to the circuit becoming an icon that people associate with the city.

RESEARCH RACING CASE STUDIES Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps Stavelot, Belgium
This 4.33 Mile racing circuit is a classic on the Formula One calender. The circuit has been loved by fans and drivers since 1925 when it held its first race. With the natural and majestic setting, in the middle of the forest the circuit gets the reputation of being, "the most beautiful circuit in the world." While the track is highly acclaimed among drivers and fans it is extremely difficult to drive which has resulted in numerous fatalities. This has led to multiple interventions from the FIA to adjust certain corners in order to increase the safety of the drivers.

Hosting its first race in 2012 Circuit of the Americas became the first purpose-built Formula One track in the US. German Architect Herman Tilke is responsible for the design of the 3.4 mile circuit as well as many other circuits on the calender. COTA has played a major role in the increase of popularity towards Formula One in the states boasting a record-breaking crowd of 400,000 fans. The circuit sits on 375- acres of open land outside of downtown Austin. The location and from ground up design allowed them to utilize elevation changes creating a more dynamic racing experience for Aerial of Austin drivers and viewers, with an elevation change of 133 feet. 360 Amphitheater

Paddock
RESEARCH CIRCUIT CASE STUDIES Circuit Gilles Villeneuve Located on Parc Jean- Drapeau | Montreal, Canada • Occupying the 1967 World's Fair site this Formula 1 circuit sets itself apart from others due to its ability to gently sit within nature. This means it limits its facilities in number as well as construction. • The Circuit is located on Parc Jean-Drapeau in the heart of the SaintLawrence River. The multi-functional track serves as a unique facility in Quebec where cycling, para-cycling, in-line skating and running enthusiasts come to train. • "Surrounded by gardens, abundant nature and several works of public art , the circuit is a pleasant and relaxing place, where it is good to walk around."

SUSTAINABILITY CASE STUDIES
Governors Island, New York
The center for climate solutions will support the research, development and demonstration of equitable climate solutions that can be scaled and applied globally. The center is envisioned to include; an anchor academic or research institution, a public living laboratory, space for environmental justice organizations and nonprofits, commercial innovation, dormitories and faculty housing, convening spaces, and urban farming.

The Hills, Governors Island
The Hills at Governors Island brings ten acres of sloping landscape to New York City. The landscape provides residents and visitors with an escape from the city while still being able to appreciate it with unparalled views. Constructed from recycled demolition debris, general fill and lightweight pumice, the hills dramatic topography improves the islands resilience to volatile weather conditions as well as rising sea levels. 'The Hills'
Governor's island provided insightful strategies to help combat climate change while also providing a public amenity that users enjoy. The strategies of using excavated earth served multiple purposes on my sight. The primary being protection from rising sea level, but also a natural spectating zone for people viewing races/ enjoying views of the park.
EDUCATIONAL CASE STUDY
Maker Space Buildings
UDEM High School (San Pedro Campus) The proposal for these buildings aims to create a transparent space that allows circulation to occur around the students making. This high visibility peaks interest and collaboration amongst disciplines in the school. The buildings are very simple rectangular masses with covered walkways. This allows for an 'intermediate' space of circulation and viewing. This building typology provided my project with a solution to team paddock buildings that would serve multiple uses throughout the year, during races as well as for workshops for students or members of the community.

BUILDING FORM INSPIRATION Santiago Calatrava Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia
Opera House|Valencia Spain
Blending art and Engineering
This Opera house is a part of Calatrava's City of Arts and Sciences in his hometown of Valencia, Spain. The 'city' consists of the Opera House, a Planetarium/IMAX Theater and the Principe Felipe Science Museum which are oriented in a linear composition creating a cultural complex. Designed as an Urban Landmark each volume has its own unique form giving it its own identity. Being situated midway between the old city and the coastal district the complex works to bring focus to an underdeveloped area of Valencia while linking the city to the sea. The firm stated that, "The building is a series of apparently random volumes, which become unified through their enclosure within two symmetrical, cut-away concrete shells." The building utilizes its sculptural form to create exterior terraces and circulation that seamlessly flow within the enclosure.

REFLECTIONS
Designing the entire site of League Island Park was a long and tedious process. Some impactful comments I got early on had to do with the experience of the park at different times of the year particularly when races were not taking place. This led to a long process of many iterations for the overall master plan. I investigated each different area of the park and how I wanted it to interact with its direct adjacencies as well as the overall site. I was especially interested in the history of the Navy Yard and how it has changed programatically as well as ecologically over time. In terms of the building design I struggled throughout the year trying to rationalize a monumental form that is representative of racing. At the midpoint I was forcing myself into making the form more representative of a car rather than thinking about the experience from a human level. This was important as I continued to rationalize this form without completely abandoning my ambitious design. Looking deeper in Santiago Calatrava’s work I was able to rationalize an enclosure that was easily experienced at the human scale while still being able to take a more dynamic form representative of a car.
