40% OF HOMELESS YOUTH IN USA IDENTIFY AS LGBtq+

120% lgbtq+ youth more likely to experience homelessness than "cishet" counterpart

Home[bound] is a project that addresses the homeless epidemic amongst the lgbtq+ youth population in the united states, and specifically in the rebuilding city of detroit michigain. both the homeless lgbtq+ youth and the city of detroit have experienced abandonment, and this project seeks to support both communities in their rebuilding efforts. Using the lgbtq+ homeless youth epidemic as the rebuilding of the city Home[bound] looks to create carefully curated and well integrated queer space in the urban fabric of detroit. The existing design of homeless shelters are seen as unwelcoming, institutional, and unsafe. as well there is often a lack of privacy due to overcrowding. the design of Home[bound] looks to reshape the design of emergency housing shelters to create a place of healing, growth and expression that is centered around nature and places emphasis on reintegration into society.

thesis statement; Through the reshaping of the design of homeless housing, a place of HEALING, GROWTH , and EXPRESSION which is centered around REINTEGRATION into society can be formed.

questions: How can the carefully designed public realm promote INTEGRATION , AWARENESS , and ACCEPTANCE of an undermined community? What is the role of architecture in EXPRESSING and STRENGTHENING the culture of the LGBTQ+ community? How can architecture be RESILIENT , SUSTAINABLE, and SPATIAL CONCEPT EQUITABLE in a redeveloping city such as Detroit while putting emphasis on place, health, happiness, materials, and beauty?

would create a strong symbolic base made up of a stone panel system creating a protective front at the public level. in the public portions of large amounts of glazing allow transparency creating a visual connection between the interior & exterior. the panel facadesystem design of the housing masses are made up of windows that mimic the motions of the voguing that occurs at the house balls. The organization of the windows on the upper massings creates a blurring of the floor levels and conceals what occurs on these floors. This creates a rhythmic, playful, and expressive design at the private portion of the project.
