HARVESTING HOPE

Vertical Farming in the Persian Gulf Island of Qeshm By: Advisor:

Manijeh Haeri John Defazio, AIA

“If you want light, you must light a fire” Rumi 1207-1273 Thesis: The interrelated process of climate change and agriculture take place on a global scale. Over farming threatens earth’s top soil through erosion, it also depletes nutrients from the soil . Over use of chemical pesticides pollute the water and the very crops we depend on. When practiced without care, farming presents the greatest threat to species and ecosystems. New, innovative and sustainable farming methods could preserve the valuable top soil, eliminate use of chemical fertilizers and maintain a healthy environment and in many cases reverse the damage already done. Vertical farms and large scale green house farming could be an effective solution to issues of agricultural land depletion and constraints all over the world. Controlled Farming environments can also create farming opportunities in areas where diversified farming is not possible through traditional means. Where soil and water are not adequate for farming and the climate limits produce choices, a controlled environment or large scale green houses could be the solution.
