The surrounding area has a healthy mix of green space and small towns. The project goal is to incorporate the site into the existing fabric of the area. Hubs of culture such as Dia Beacon and Storm King Art Center are within the immediate area. State parks offer various hiking trails throughout the region. Towns such as Cold Spring and Newburgh offer waterfront food and drinks.

This project, located on a secluded island within the Hudson River, is a weekend get away for people looking to immerse themselves within the nature and culture of the Hudson Valley for a weekend.

The only one of these precedents to not be located on a body of water, this resort is tucked into the mountains of chile. The resort consists of 12 units and their common space. This project achieves the affect of isolation and silence by scattering the cabins along the edge of the forest. How can improved circulation create a better unit layout?

Floating on lake Srinakarin Dam, this thailand resort uses nature oriented materials and offers private units on the water. Each unit has their own view of the lake and surrounding mountains. Following the ideas of reduce, reuse, recycle, this resort aims to make as little impact on nature as possible. How can this resort rearrang their unit layout to allow for more guests?

PROJECT OBJECTIVES isolated living, communal gathering

The design of the island reflects how the users split their time between isolated living space and communal event space. The central event space is located within the island’s ruins while the living spaces are spread across the island, nestled into the topography and angled towards specific viewsheds.

Jack Jennings is a local middle schooler from Newburgh, NY. His mother has signed him up to attend a day camp on Pollepel Island to get him out of the house. Jack’s mother also passed along the registration information to other parents at the PTA meeting.

Jack walked from his house down to the ferry dock located on the Newburgh water front. Other students and friends from his class congregated along the dock as the ferry pulled in. The ferry ride lasted about 20 minutes.

DESIRES:

Excited to see the ruins of the castle that he has heard so much about, Jack can’t wait to get to the island. The idea of climbing rocks and dipping his feet in the water is Jack’s ideal Saturday. His close friends are excited to spend the day together.

PROGRAM: NATURE

JJ and Kristen, just recently married, are itching for a vacation. The couple met in college, and have a very close knit group of friends. They have set up a small destination vacation to get out of Albany for a week. Their group of 10 friends are excited to spend the week together.

The party caravans their way to the Hudson Valley via car on the highway. The traffic is mild, but that can’t dampen the excitement that the group has. Once in Beacon, the group parks their cars in long term parking and rides the ferry to the island.

DESIRES:

The group agrees that the best parts of the vacation will be getting away from home, spending time together as a group, and being able to swim in the lagoon. Being mid July, the guys plan to spend their day and the water while the girls watch from the shade on the island.

CONTEXT

DESTINATION COMMUNITY

Lyle and Linda are both retired school teachers living in New York City. Interested from alone time with each other, Linda has booked a weekend get away for them. Both Lyle and Linda are excited to get out of their “concrete jungle and recharge their batteries together.

$

Lyle and Linda packed small bags, went to their local subway station and arrived in Grand Central Station. From here, a 90 minute train ride dropped them off in Beacon. Since the weather forcast predicted clouds, the ferry is mostly empty.

DESIRES:

Unbothered by the weather forcast, the elderly couple is just happy to get away. During the day, Lyle and Linda make local trips to Dia Beacon and Storm King Art Center. When returning at night, they retreat to their isolated cabin, curl up in bed, and begin reading their books.
