WORKSHOP PIER BRANDON LUTZ RACHEL SCHADE, ADVISOR THESIS MAY 2019 This project researches biophilia, sustainable design, and Philadelphia’s creative culture to demonstrate how these aspects boost creativity, collaboration, and community involvement. Workshop Pier engages the need for contact with nature by creating an immersive Experience showcasing the order and complexity of nature and architecture. With the use of Workshop Pier’s biophilic and sustainable design strategies, it not only gives back to the community by providing a destination for all residents of Philadelphia no matter their interests but also gives back to the environment in a positive manner. Workshop Pier provides a multitude of small to mid-size workshops, classrooms, labs, and offices that work together to engage with one another while also providing a generous 2,500,000 SF of multi-use open space. These spaces encourage outdoor recreation, including a bike path, kayak launch and a series of biofiltration pools.

DESIGN AND RESPONSE

DESIGN: MOST OF THE RESEARCH AND SITE ELEMENTS AT THIS POINT WERE DIRECTED TOWARDS THE EXTERIOR EXPRESSION OF THE SITE. BY USING THE SITE ELEMENTS OF TOPOGRAPHY OF WATER, THE SITE WAS TO INTERACT BETWEEN BOTH. ONE WAY TO DO THIS IS BY SUBMERGING I-95 UNDERGROUND TO BRING THE NEIGHBORHOOD PHYSICALLY CLOSER. ANOTHER WAY TO DO THIS IS TO LET THE RIVER CLAIM BACK PORTIONS OF THE LAND THAT THE CURRENT BULKHEADS KEEP IN PLACE.

• • • • • • • • • •

THE OVERALL SITE MOVES OF THE PROJECT WERE IN COMPOSITION OF THE PATHS AND OVERALL PLACEMENT OF PROGRAMS THE PLACEMENTS AND SHAPE OF THE BUILDINGS SEEM CONVOLUTED THE SEPARATION OF PROGRAM WILL MAKE IT HARD FOR COLLABORATION THE BIOFILTRATION POOL SEEMS AMBIGUOUS. THE PROGRAMMED AREA SEEMS SMALL IN COMPARISON TO THE SITE SIZE THE ENTRY SEEMS MORE VEHICULAR FRIENDLY VS PEDESTRIAN FRIENDLY PARKING NEEDS TO BE INCREASED THINK ABOUT ALIGNMENTS OF PREVIOUS CITY ROADS NEED TO VIEW MORE OF THE SITE SECTION THE SAW-TOOTH SEEMS A BIT OVERBEARING OVER THE ENTIRE PROJECTS

This thesis project was a meaningful one to me about providing destination and reducing the negative stigma that comes with many industrial sites. It opened up an appreciation on using the natural site forces that I have not been exposed to before and going through the iterative process of making something that can truly stand the test of time in an evolving city. I am so happy how all my professors, peers, jury, friends and family were able to experience my project. I look forward to diving deeper into the exploration of biophilic design from a sustainable perspective to protect out precious environment. It was an absolute honor being awarded the silver medal in the Michael Pearson Architecture Prize along side of Kai Johnson and Carolyn Crego. It was an amazing experience working with everyone in the thesis room as allour projects drew to a close. A special thanks go to Rachel Schade for all your help and guidance. Another special thanks goes to my good friend Karlene Raines for all the support during super late nights / early mornings working in the studio and model making labs.
