Located between Riverside Park and Central Park, the site boarders the largest historic district in NYC. It is surrounded by ample amenities and is very walkable. The traffic surrounding the corner location is both loud and bustling with pedestrians and transportation. Since the income of the residents is vast in range, the population is diverse.

SITE ANALYSIS
No. 13
SITE: BROADWAY + W. 96TH ST. NEW YORK, NEW YORK SIGNIFICANCE: 96TH STREET SUBWAY STATION HEADHOUSE (2010) ABANDONED SUBSTATION 14 (1904)
TRANSILIENT THE PROJECT, LOCATED ON THE UPPER WEST SIDE, SEEKS TO SOLVE A MYRIAD OF ISSUES RELATED TO ABANDONED ARCHITECTURE AND INFRASTRUCTURE. THE BUSTLING CORNER SITE HAS BEEN ATIVATED WITH A MIXED USE TOWER THAT MIMICS THE MIGRATORY PATTERNS OF THE NEW YORKER. IT CONNECTS TO THE ABANDONED SUBSTATION 14, ON WEST 96TH STREETM WHICH WAS ONE OF THE PRIGINAL EIGHT SUBSTATIONS THAT POWERED THE NEW YORK CITY SUBWAY SYSTEM WHEN IT BEGAN OPERATIONS IN 1904. THE PROJECT TAKES THE OLD TECHNOLOGIES OF DESIGN AND RE-PRESENTS THE SWITCH IN TECHNOLOGY AND THE WAY OUR SOCIETY LIVES IN THE 21ST CENTURY

THE CORE, LOCATED AT THE REAR OF THE BUILDING HOUSES SIX ELEVATORS, TWO STAIR TOWERS FOR EGRESS, AND MECHANICAL ROOMS FOR EACH FLOOR.
IN AREAS OF THE BUILDING WHERE THE FLOOR-TO-FLOOR HEIGHT NEED NOT TO BE SO HIGH, MEZZANINE LEVELS WERE ADDED TO ACCOMMODATE MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT

THE DIAGRAM ABOVE ILLUSTRATES THE MAIN CIRCULATION PATHS FROM UNDERGROUND TO ABOVE GROUND. THE YELLOW SHAPES HIGHLIGHT THE AREAS WHERE NATURAL LIGHT IS BROUGHT TO THE LOWEST LEVEL OF THE BASE OF THE TOWER. A LIGHT GLASS LIGHT WELL BRINGS LIGHT TO THE THE END OF THE UNDERPASS TUNNEL, WHILE THE SIDEWALK ON THE MAIN LEVEL PLAZA HAS GLASS SIDEWALKS THAT ALLOW LIGHT TO PASS THROUGH THE CONCRETE.
LOWER LEVELS
THE BASE OF THE TOWER FUNCTIONS WITH MANY USES. THE FIRST BEING THAT IT SERVES AS A SECONDARY ENTRANCE/EXIT FOR THE SUBWAY STATION AT W. 96TH AND BROADWAY. IT CONNECTS TO THE TOWER THROUGH THE UNDERPASS LOCATED UNDER THE SUBWAY TRAINS ON BROADWAY. THE MAIN LEVEL ACTS AS A PUBLIC PLAZA AND ENTRANCE TO THE SUBSTATION 14 SPACE, THE LOWER LEVEL AND SUBWAY, AND THE TOWER ABOVE. THE FIRST 3 LEVELS ABOVE THE PLAZA LEVEL ARE THE CO-WORKING LEVELS THAT ARE 24//7 ACCESS. ABOVE THE BASE AT THE FIFTH LEVEL IS THE OUDOOR GARDEN PLAZA LEVEL, WHICH SERVES AS A SEMI-PUBLIC PARK AND A BREAK IN THE MASSING BEFORE THE RESIDENTIAL FLOORS BEGIN.
