SUMMARY Jason Mulligan Binghamton Center for the Arts Advisor: Bob Nalls
PROJECT OBJECTIVE The goal for this facility is to create a multi-use center that can serve the needs of a variety of art forms, creating a space that is continually active. The facility will utilize a range of performance halls and secondary spaces that are designed to adapt to the specific needs of each art form; including musical theater, drama, dance, and concerts ranging from choral to rock. PROGRAM BACKGROUND In the past, theaters generally have been designed to accommodate a single type of performance. Audiences would come to the theater for the show, and then leave once it had ended. As the variety of both the performing arts and the spaces that they require have evolved, so must the way that we design them. Recently we have made great leaps in our ability to shape a room for a specific purpose and adjust it accordingly. However we have failed to make the buildings themselves as dynamic as the theaters they hold. Performance spaces have become polarized and designed to serve only a few forms of performing arts, often excluding many types all together.

Site Context BINGHAMTON NY Located along route 81, Binghamton is located between Syracuse to the north and Scranton to the south. In the past the city had a notable concentration of electronics and defense-oriented firms. Presently the focus has shifted twords healthcare and education, with Binghamton University acting as the driving force behind this revitalization. The heart of downtown Binghamton is located where the Susquehanna and Chenango Rivers meet. The 2010 census list the population as 47,376. It is the county seat of Broome County with the greater Binghamton area home to a quater of a million people.

SITE SELECTION This location was chosen for a variety of reasons; the most important being in the heart of the downtown area. The site is by far both the densest and most built up area in the city. One of the more walkable parts of the city is located less that a block to the north along Court street. The other theater institutions within the city are also located within half a mile of the site. The west side of the lower lot is a hotel, giving this site an importance to the tourist industry in the city. The most challenging aspect of the site is the near adjacency to one of the two rivers. This puts the site at risk of significant flooding.

THEORETICAL ISSUES Traditional performance spaces focus around one or two types of performances. This facility hopes to create spaces that are significantly more adaptable to each performances needs. By planning for the most extreme situations and giving each space an inherent flexibility, each performance space is able to incorporate a wider range of the performing arts. Most theaters are only active during performances. The goal of this facility is to create an environment that remains significantly more active by incorporating uses such as art galleries, classrooms, dance studios, and restaurants. The addition of gallery spaces allows rotating exhibits to be displayed more prominently in the community and gives a daytime life to the facility. Classrooms for everything from acting classes to dance lessons allows the facility to greater serve the community. A designated dance studio allows dance rehearsals to take place off stage and allows activities ranging from ballet to yoga to be held for the community’s benefit. The incorporation of restaurants into the facility aim to create a space that is active regardless of what is going on in the theater. One of the main goals of the facility is to create a set of spaces that can combine to form a single performance space capable of accommodating a larger audience for concerts. By making the theater easily adaptable to this more specific use, it can allow touring shows to more easily utilize the center without causing such a significant disturbance to it’s normal functions.

Wyly Theater

Goals The theater company that operates the theater came from a warehouse space prior to moving into the Wyly Theater. Known for having complete liberty to adapt their space to whatever they wanted, they hoped to create a more formal space that would offer them the same sense of inherent flexibility. While more traditional theaters are built around a single type of configuration, the Wyly theater was designed from the beginning to transform into any number of layouts. An effort was also made to make the transitions simple, fast, and require the least amount of labor as possible in order to minimize cost and allow a fast turnover.
CERRITOS CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

Goals The Cerritos Center was designed to host opera, cabaret, jazz, dance, magic, drama, musicals and comedy performances as well as private functions. The overall shape of the theater is based on the traditional soapbox design like that of the Musikvereinssaal Hall in Vienna and the Boston Symphony Hall. The Cerritos Center also includes a hotel and office building within the campus.
Relevant Information Because of the center’s high level of flexibility, within two years the Cerritos Center became the most profitable theater in California and the third highest in it’s category in the world. While the balconies remain fixed, the box seats are removable and adjustable. A system of Hydraulic lifts and castors allows the space to be configured into five separate spaces; arena, concert, lyric, drama, and banquet (flat floor). The entire space can be changed into another configuration within eight hours.
