HOMELESS VETERANS HOUSING Reintegrating veterans into the Community

CASEY SCHEETZ

ADVISOR: JEFF KREIGER

SITE I looked at in the Washington DC area as that is the area in which I first became aware of the homeless veteran population. With the area imediately surrounding DC being densely populated I choose a site that is approximately 60 miles south east of DC in St. Mary’s County, MD. The site is located adjacent to the Patuxent River Naval Air Station. MARYLAND

PROGRAM With 70% of the homeless veteran population being single individuals and the remaining 30% of the population being comprised of families the program of the housing units consists of 70 (1) bedroom units and 30 townhomes and single family homes. Additional program elements include amenities that veterans are familier with from their time in the service to help aid in their healing.

PATUXENT COVE

LEXINGTON PARK, MARYLAND

THIS PROJECT IS SAID TO BREAK “THE PRESCRIPTIVE MOLD OF THE TRADITIONAL SHELTER BY CREATING PUBLIC AND PRIVATE ‘ZONES’ IN WHICH PRIVATE SPACE IS DEEMPHASIZED, IN FAVOR OF PERSONAL AND GROUP SOCIAL SPACES.” HOWEVER, IN AN ANALYSIS OF THE PUBLIC (YELLOW) AND PRIVATE (RED) IT SEEMS AT FIRST GLANCE THAT THERE ARE MORE PRIVATE THAN PUBLIC SPACES, EVEN WHEN YOU CONSIDER THE COURTYARD AND THE ROOF TOP GARDEN. I THINK THAT DEEMPHASIZING THE PRIVATE SPACES IS THE BETTER APPROACH FOR VETERANS HOUSING TO HELP THEM BECOME PART OF THE COMMUNITY AGAIN BUT I THINK THAT THIS WOULD BE MORE SUCCESSFULLY DONE BY USING PUBLIC SPACES THAT THEY ARE FAMILIAR WITH AND ARE WILLING TO GO TO RATHER THAN GENERIC AMENITIES.

THIS PROJECT IS LOCATED DOWN THE ROAD FROM MY SELECTED SIE. THE MATERIALS USED ON THIS PROJECT ARE CHARATERISTIC OF THE COUNTY, BEING MOSTLY HORIZONTAL SIDING WITH SOME BRICK ACENTS. I LIKE THAT THERE IS A SENSE OF SYMMETRY AND ASSEMETRY AT THE SAME TIME IN THE FORM OF THE BUILDING AND THE PROPORTIONS OF THE MATERIALS. THERE IS GOOD CONTRAST BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT COLORED SIDING AND THE TRIM. I’M NOT SURE IF THE USE OF BRICK IN THIS COMPOSITION WORKS THE WAY IT IS INTENDED TO AS THIS TO ME READS AS A SINGLE-ENTRANCE MULTIFAMILY HOUSING BUILDING RATHER THAN A SERIES OF TOWNHOMES BY EMPHESIZING THE CENTER BAY OF THE BUILDING.

PERSONAL REFLECTIONS IT IS NOT JUST THEACCESS TO HOUSING THAT IS NEEDED FOR HOMELESS VETERANS BUT BEING SURROUNDED BY MEMBERS OFACOMMUNITY THAT UNDERSTANDS WHAT THEY HAVE BEEN THROUGH.COMMUNITYAMENITIES THAT VETERANSARE FAMILIAR IS ONE PART OF THE REHABILITION PROCESS.
