STATES WITH STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT DEATH RATE OVERDOSE INCREASES 2014-2015

epidemic in the u.s. THE UNITED STATES IS LEADING THE WORLD IN PRESCRIPTION OPIOID ABUSE.

CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL & PREVENTION

Prescription drug abuse has been the fastest growing problem in the United States since 20072. In the United States, nearly 23 MILLION PEOPLE SUFFER FROM A SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER, DQG QHDUO\ RI WKHVH SHRSOH ZLWK DGGLFWLRQV DOVR VXႇHU IURP RWKHU PHQWDO LOOQHVVHV VXFK DV depression and anxiety 3,4 2SLRLGV DUH YHU\ SRSXODU GXH WR WKHLU VRRWKLQJ HႇHFWV ZKLFK RIWHQ make people feel safe, protected, and accepted in a pain-free state. This is because opioids belong to a class of drugs that are designed to reduce the awareness of pain by neurologically decreasing the connection of pain receptors in the brain. While it may successfully reduce the awareness of pain, opioids are merely a tool of symptom management, and they do not actually heal the condition causing one pain5. Within the past few decades, our medical model transitioned to a practice of symptom management, therefore the number of prescriptions written by doctors for pharmaceutical opioid pain relievers has more than quadrupled since 19996. Unfortunately, BIG PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES, ALONG WITH BIG FOOD, TOBACCO,

ALCOHOL, AND BUSINESS, UNDERSTAND ADDICTION AND UNDERSTAND HOW TO MANIPULATE IT IRU SUR¿W7 7KH 8QLWHG 6WDWHV VWLJPDWL]HV DGGLWLRQ DV D QRW RQO\ D GLVHDVH EXW D SUR¿WDEOH RQH. NO ONE IS IMMUNE TO AN EPIDEMIC OF THIS SEVERITY. Addiction does not discriminate against gender, race, religion, sex, profession, income, level of education, status, etc. and the whole range of human character can be found among people with addictions8. For people with addiction, TRAUMA IS THE CRITICAL FACTOR that causes the problem and nearly 90% of addicts will relapse at least once in their lifetime due the lack of recognition of the underlying cause of their pain9,10 $OWKRXJK DGGLFWLRQ LV D YHU\ YHUVDWLOH DႉLFWLRQ WKDW FDQ DႇHFW DQ\RQH ZKR KDV H[SHULHQFHG WUDXPD LQ WKHLU OLIHWLPH WKH 8QLWHG 6WDWHV KDV PDGH HႇRUWV to STIGMATIZE AND CRIMINALIZE WKRVH VXႇHULQJ IURP DGGLFWLRQ 1HDUO\ RI $PHULFDQV support discrimination against people with addictions11, yet for other mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety we tolerate this kind of discrimination. In the United States we have a system that is designed to enslave people in addiction and then immediately reject them from society for falling into the trap, stripping many of their lives, dignity, and hope.

how can the opioid epidemic in kensington be confronted using principles of community, meditation, and self-enlightenment to encourage the rehabilitation of addicts? THIS THESIS CHALLENGES OUR CURRENT WESTERN UNDERSTANDING OF ADDICTION BY EMBEDDING PRINCIPLES OF EASTERN PHILOSOPHY WITHIN THE ARCHITECTURE OF A REHABILITATION FACILITY THAT AIDS THE REHABILITATION AND RECOVERY OF DRUG ADDICTS IN THE KENSINGTON NEIGHBORHOOD OF PHILADELPHIA. THIS PROJECT SEEKS TO EXPLORE HOW THE HUMAN BODY, MIND, AND SPIRIT CAN BE CONCEPTUALIZED INTO A BUILDING’S SENSE OF BODY, MIND, AND SPIRIT THAT PROMOTES SELF-RECOGNITION, APPRECIA-

TION, AND OVERALL HEALTH. IT ALSO SEEKS TO UNDERSTAND HOW PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES THAT PROMOTE MINDFULNESS CAN BE IMPLEMENTED IN THE BUILT FORM AS MEANS TO EXPRESS THE “BREATH” AND “BODY” OF THE BUILDING, TO POSSIBLY RE-PRESENT WHAT A “LIVING” BUILDING IS.

project goals: 1. PROVIDE NEIGHBORHOOD TRIAGE IN HEAVILY AFFECTED AREAS 2. NEW MODEL OF TREATMENT BASED ON MINDFULNESS PRINCIPLES 3. STIMULATE KENSINGTON BY PROVIDING VALUABLE INFRASTRUCTURE 4. INTEGRATE SOCIAL SERVICES 5. CONTRAST INWARD REFLECTION WITH OUTWARD EXPRESSION 6. SUSTAINABLE RE-USE OF EXISTING NEIGHBORHOOD FABRIC 7. EXPAND NEIGHBORHOOD GREENSPACE NETWORK 8. ESTABLISH A COMMUNITY SUPPORT RECOVERY NETWORK

(ABOVE) IN THIS STUDY, I COMPARED FOUR DIFFERENT REHABILITATION & COMMUNITY CENTERS IN REGARDS TO PROGRAM, SIZE, REHABILITATION TYPE, AND GREEN SPACE. ONE MAJOR INSIGHT TO THIS STUDY WAS THE IDEA OF THE PROTECTED COURTYARD, WHERE THE BUILDINGS PROTECT THE COURTYARD & CREATE AN INTERNAL REFUGE, VERSUS THE EXPANDING COURTYARD, WHERE THE BUILDING & SURROUNDING LANDSCAPE BLEND BETWEEN EACH OTHER , PULLING NATURE INTO THE BUILDING. WAREHOUSE REHABILITATION | THE WAREHOUSE IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE MAXIMUM SUPPORT SPACES DURING THE HEIGHT OF THE CRISIS. THESE SUPPORT SPACES ARE DIVIDED INTO TWO CATEGORIES: THE SERVICES HEAD & THE RESIDENTIAL TOWERS. WITHIN THE SERVICES HEAD IS A MARKET, OFFICE SPACES FOR LOCAL NON-PROFITS, EDUCATIONAL SPACES FOR SKILLS & JOB TRAINING, REFUGE HOUSING, AND CONTINUED THERAPY. THERE ARE TWO SEPARATE RESIDENTIAL TOWERS THAT ARE SEPARATED INTO VERTICAL COMMUNITIES BASED ON DIFFERENT LEVELS OF TREATMENT HOUSING. TREATMENT TOWER 1 IS DESIGNED FOR NEW PATIENTS WHO MAY NEED MORE MEDICAL MONITORING WHILE THEY ARE DETOXING, WHEREAS TREATMENT TOWER 2 WOULD BE FOR RESIDENTS WHO HAVE BEEN IN THE PROGRAM LONGER & HAVE MORE INDEPENDENT & SOBER LIVING HOUSING. BELOW THE RESIDENCES ARE COMMERCIAL SPACES DEDICATED TO LOCAL NEIGHBORHOOD TENANTS TO ENCOURAGE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & REVITALIZATION.

THERAPY STUDIOS THE THERAPY STUDIOS OVERLOOK SMALL GARDENS & THE EXPANSIVE COURTYARD, INVITING NATURE AND DAILY LIFE INTO THE THERAPY CENTER. THESE STUDIOS HAVE SIMILAR STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS AS THE FAMILY ROOM, TO HELP INCORPORATE A SENSE OF GROUNDING & SUPPORT. THE STUDIOS CAN BE USED FOR NUMEROUS THERAPY, YOGA, AND MINDFULNESS CLASSES.

TREATMENT CENTER AT SUNSET A PLACE FOR HOPE, STRENGTH, COMMUNITY, & TREATMENT FOR EVERYONE AFFECTED BY THE OPIOID CRISIS. TOGETHER, WE CAN REDUCE THE STIGMA ASSOCIATED WITH ADDICTION & CHALLENGE OURSELVES TO DISCOVER NEW WAYS TO PROVIDE HELP FOR THOSE WHO ARE STRUGGLING WITH IT.
