-AMERICA has an issue of childhood obesity and the lack of healthy food options in low-income urban areas. -It is easier to get a bag of chips and soda from a corner store than affordable fresh produce. -Lower-income children cannot always afford to partake in extracurricular activities, resulting in a decrease in physical activity. In addition, families who struggle to pay bills and make a living often opt for convenience foods, which are higher in calories, fat and sugar. The Urban Wellness Center will create a neighborhood center where children and their families can learn to cook healthy, affordable meals; grow their own produce, achieve a healthy life style and positive self image.
