Trenton, New Jersey serves as the state’s capitol and was once nation’s capitol early on in our history. It was a common stop among travelers heading toward settlements of New York City or Philadelphia. Quaker settlers occupied the land after Lenni Lenape Tribes of Native Americans either agreed to move or were pushed out. The area was known as “Assunpink” or “stony, watery place” due to its proximity to river sources and the boulders that would often appear and create small rapids or falls. Trenton utilized the nearby Delaware River as it major power source for producing several goods including pottery, milled lumber, and eventually a large ironworks industry. The Roebling Ironworks Company, in particular, made a huge impact on transportation in the Northeast by producing steel cables for many of our great bridges including the Brooklyn Bridge and Benjamin Franklin Bridge. The Riverfront District often experiences flash floods through the year in which the river breaches Route 29 and can easily go further inland to much of the surface parking serving the area. The area mostly serves vehicles and paths for transportation, however Trenton is beginning to implement its Trenton 250 master plan in which most of the district will be redeveloped toward the river. They are planning to provide new low-rise, mixed-use residential buildings with the goal of bringing more visitors to the downtown area. The Riverfront district is zoned to encourage a place of business while surrounded by residential neighborhoods. Illustrations of the master plan neglect development of the actual water front and provide an opportunity of further development as a people space.

THESIS STATEMENT: Just as the Delware River was once used by Trenton as its major power source, the goal of this project is to revitalize the riverfront as a clean, interactive, educational, public event space that attracts visitors to and from Downtown Trenton. Images to the right and top of the page were used as inspiration for what types of activities will be dispersed through the site and how the form of the site will look when responding to the road, river, Trenton Makes Bridge, and the site’s history of use. A rough building area is called out in purple to show the collective of spaces provided at similar public, park, and event spaces later observed through case studies.

Case Studies
Cherry Street Pier was studied as a public space placed at the river’s edge and uses program components of entry, offices, sales area, multi-purpose area, outdoor/covered-seating, and a termination/look-out point. Circulation serves as a spine and in a linear fashion with entry and exit at the same point. The pier also features an area to display movies and entertainment across the water to the neighboring Race Street Pier. Cherry street also provides possible uses for people arriving by boat, or kayak. The overall feel of the space is open and industrial as the pier was once used as a port for ships and shipping container storage. The Trenton Punk Rock Flea Market is housed by the same factory that the Roebling Brothers began production for their ironworks. It is re-purposed for public events just like a flea market suited with areas for sales stalls, office and administration spaces, open areas for food trucks and seating, next to areas of shaded seating for people to eat and listen to music at performance spaces. The old industrial feel rings true when one experiences the repetition of exposed iron structure and the age is noted by many patina and rusted materials.

Site Context PROGRAM/CIRCULATION
The Riverfront District is surrounded by 3 major building types. To the Northeast are the State House, government buildings, and law offices which provide more classical, austere and grounded structures. To the East many mom and pop shops as well as rowhomes begin to populate before meeting residential communities. To the South East there are the reminiscence of old factories and water towers once used during Trenton’s Industrial period. At the direct site there is mostly surface parking, highways, and a few large government buildings that serve Mercer County.
