CLUB UPDATE
Emirates Golf Club
Dear Member
I do hope you have enjoyed the start of our 2022 – 2023 season and looking forward to the cooler weather as the region is welcoming a global audience for major events including the DP World Tour Championship, Earth Course (17-20th November), Abu Dhabi F1 (20th November) and the FIFA World Cup in Qatar (20th November – 18th December).
DP World Tour Championship
(17 - 20th November)
The Top players on the DP World Tour will compete over the Earth course from 17th – 20th November. Entry is free to the event all four days. In addition, due to capacity restrictions, 100 clubhouse passes per day will be made accessible for Emirates Golf Club members, these are available from Membership team on a first come first served basis. Please email Valance at Vdaniel@ dubaigolf.com (max 1 ticket per member).
During a busy November period please make sure you utilize your 11-day booking window whenever possible. Jumeirah Golf Estates members have increased reciprocal benefits during the period
(with 7-day booking window) and in return Emirates Golf Club members have improved access during the Dubai Desert Classic closure in January 2023.
Football
Central
at Emirates Golf Club
| 2022 FIFA World Cup
Many of you will know we have a strong tradition of hosting fan experiences for major sporting events including the FIFA World Cup, Euros and the Rugby World Cup.
The FIFA World Cup in Qatar promises to be an exciting time for our Fan Park in the newly opened Pavilion and event lawn. The Food & Beverage team will set up a fantastic experience for all football fans creating a family environment at the club. The Fan Park will include the Pavilion, a shaded tent on the lawn, grandstands, LED Screens, food trucks, entertainment and so much more. For more information and bookings please visit dubaigolf.com/footballcentral.
The matches are schedule at 2pm, 5pm, 8pm and 11pm so great timing for the first ‘winter’ World cup.
Golf Etiquette
With the new season in full swing, we must continue to focus on and improve etiquette across the board. Please look after your course by repairing pitch marks, raking bunkers, filling divots, and driving carts as expected (NOT in sand areas or close to greens/tees). Thank you for your support as we try to improve this important part of the club experience. If you have ever played with a member or guest and feel their etiquette is well below par maybe nudge them to improve by sending them this link to a video I put together with Matt Perry our Golf Course Superintendent!

Padel Tennis and Par 3 Reception
Our popular Padel Tennis and Par 3 operations have a new reception clubhouse. The new outlet has opened to the left of the Par 3 1st tee and includes shower facilities for your convenience if you require a quick shower and change before work!
Festive Period
Following the coat tails of the FIFA World Cup we head straight into the festive period.
For all Festive enquiries please reach out to the team at emiratesdining@dubaigolf.com.
Highlights include:
• Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony & Festive Kickstarter Party – Saturday 3rd December from 7pm
• Turkey Takeaway
• Christmas Day Brunch
• New Years Eve celebrations on the Event Lawn (with ABBA back by popular demand) and in carine
Hole 13 Faldo Course
Sir Nick Faldo played the Faldo Course at the end of October with Kevin Pietersen (Ex England Cricketer) and was pleased with the changes made to that hole over the summer. I hope you are enjoying the new par 4 or at least the extra length is helping with pace of play with less groups waiting for the green to clear!
General Housekeeping
The Member’s lounge is popular during the week for conference calls/virtual meetings. Several members conducting these calls do not have headsets, so this becomes quite disturbing for other members using the members’ lounge. Please show courtesy to other members with this regard.
Golf Course Booking Window
The top 10 spenders each month will receive an electronic voucher to book one tee time in advance of the 11-day window as a thank you for support of the Club. In addition, all members who re-join by 15th December will receive the same voucher as part of early bird renewal benefit.
CLUB UPDATE
Yas Links Abu Dhabi
Dear Members,
Welcome to our latest Viya Golf Update. These last couple of months have quite literally flown by. I am now officially a resident of Abu Dhabi and very much enjoying life on Yas Island - it truly is an incredible location, with so much to offer for both residents and overseas visitors. Over the last few months, I’ve had the great fortune to meet many of our members at the club, but I appreciate that I haven’t quite yet met everybody. One thing I’d like to communicate is that I’m very approachable and open to discussions on how we can Abu Dhabi further develop the great standing that Yas Links has in the market. Please always feel free to reach out to me and I very much look forward to making your acquaintance if I haven’t yet had the opportunity.
From a golf perspective, I always love this time of the year. It’s that exciting transition point where we say goodbye to the hot sticky summer months and begin to welcome the cooler winter period, where our courses are beginning to peak and when you as a member start to enjoy the fruits of the labour put in by our amazing agronomy team. This being said, by no means will we be resting on our laurels. Corey and George have grand plans this winter to further enhance the playing surfaces, repair native areas and also continue the drainage program within bunkers. As we all know, golf courses are living breathing creatures and require constant attention. If you do happen to see any of the agronomy team out on the course during your round, please do give them a thumbs up as they gain great encouragement and motivation in knowing you appreciate their efforts.
Please do enjoy the read and take in some of the operational updates. As always if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me personally for further clarification.
New Member Features go live on Viya – Tuesday, 1st November
As mentioned in my update last month, our target date of the 1st November for launching online bookings and other member benefits on the Viya App will be met, and so from 6.00am on Tuesday, 1st November, I’m delighted to say that you will have access to the following Viya features: -

- 5% Viya Points on all purchases (F&B and Golf Shop)
- Live online tee time bookings
- Tournament entry
- Golf lesson bookings
- Online golf shop
- Membership renewal
IMPORTANT NOTE: Viya identifies you as a member and your specific membership category, through your mobile number and your email address that you have registered with us when you joined the club. If you have changed your email address or if you have more than one mobile number or if your mobile number has
changed and you haven’t got around to updating us, please do check in with Ann or Soukaina in membership (see contact details below), as soon as possible. If either does not match the records we have for you, then you will not be able to activate your account and access the new features.

How To Use Viya – Web Resource
To help you navigate Viya, we have created a webpage which explains the functionality and provides you with a central resource, to enable you to get the most out of the application as quickly and smoothly as possible. If you have any trouble accessing Viya, activating your account or simply need some guidance on how to use a specific feature, then please do visit the link below or alternatively reach out to Ann or Soukaina who’ll be delighted to support you.

Viya Moving Forward…
The next phase of development for Viya is the integration of our corporate network and then the Micros POS system which we use across all of our restaurants. The go live date for this it will be early in the new year. Once the system is fully integrated, this will enable all members to settle all club purchases onto their membership account, directly within Viya. In the meantime, you will still be able to avail of your 25% discount at the time of settling your bill and receive an additional 5% in the form of Viya Points onto your account, by simply having one of our colleagues scan the QR code within the App at the time of payment.
New Membership Numbers
As part of the integration process of our new membership and tee time booking software (which feeds Viya), we also needed to re-align membership numbers, so they are compatible with the system. When you log into Viya for the first time and click on the ‘card’ icon in the bottom left side of the screen, you will see this page now contains some of your personal information including your new membership number. We appreciate that some members do get attached to their membership number, as it takes time to remember, however unfortunately this is a step we couldn’t avoid. The good news is that your membership card is now always with you, as long as you have your phone at your side. We hope that the additional features and services that you will now receive, more than make up for this slight inconvenience.
Farewell to Lee Waggott
Many of you will now know that after completing 5 tremendous years of service as Golf Operational Manager at Yas Links Abu Dhabi, Lee is sadly moving on to start an exciting new role heading up 59Club in southern Europe. I’ve only known Lee for 3-4 months, however during this time he has been exceptionally supportive, as we moved through the transition phase with Viya Golf, and it was very clear from the outset that he is not only a great operator, but a true professional and a gentleman to go with it. I have no doubt that that he will excel in his new role, and I’d like to wish Lee and his wife Lucie all the very best in their next adventure.
Introducing Martin Duff, Golf Operations Manager
Following on from Lee’s departure, I’m delighted to welcome Martin Duff to the team at Yas Links, replacing Lee as Golf Operations Manager. Martin adds valuable professional and regional experience to our team having moved to the UAE in 1999, working initially at the EGF as National Coach, and more recently as Director of Golf at Sharjah Golf & Shooting Club. I am sure all of our members and colleagues join us in welcoming Martin to the Club and to Abu Dhabi.
Introducing Grace Einberger, PGA Professional
I’m equally delighted to announce the arrival of Grace Einberger to our Golf Academy coaching team here at Yas Links. Grace is a PGA Professional and hails from Kitzbuehel in Austria. Her passion for golf started at a very young age (5), through her father who is also a golf coach. After playing numerous tournaments on the Austrian Junior Golf Tour and winning the Club Championship at her home club three times, she decided to turn Professional at the age of 18. She has been teaching golf for five years now and loves helping people at all skill levels to achieve their golfing goals. If you would like to discuss your own golfing needs and see how Grace can help you, please drop her a note on: geinberger@ viyagolf.com
Member Referral Scheme
Hopefully you would have had chance by now to read the details of our new membership referral scheme, which offers both the member and the referred new joiner between Aed 1,000-1,500 in credit when a referral made by a member, results in a new member joining the club. There are terms and conditions linked to the program, which Ann or Soukaina will happily talk you through, if you have any questions.
Member Tournament Survey
As conditions around Covid continue to relax and the world is becoming more normalised, we have had a number of requests from members to run competitions as a shotgun start so that we can host a prizegiving at the end of the event. The benefits of this are a much more social, fun and engaging atmosphere, as well as getting members together as a group more frequently really helps to build the community spirit which any club needs to thrive. Prior to making any decisions, we’d firstly like to ask you – our loyal members, for your opinion on what you’d like to see. It’s not always easy to please everybody, however at the end of the day we’re here to serve the best interests of the membership as a whole, and in order for us to make the best decision for the club, we’d very much appreciate it if you could click on the link below and answer this very quick survey. Once we’ve collated the findings, we’ll then discuss with the Club Captains prior to making any decisions and subsequent announcements.
Membership Prices 2023
Over the last few weeks, we’ve received a number of enquiries from members regarding membership prices for 2023. Although a decision on what the 2023 fees will be for new ‘incoming members’ joining from 1st January hasn’t yet been made, we have agreed that the 2022 membership rate card will be fixed for any existing member at the time of renewal, which is scheduled to start from the middle of November. We will be aligning the membership loyalty programmes we have at our existing operations with the clubs in Abu Dhabi as we feel it is essential to reward member loyalty uniformly across all clubs. Members will receive a credit back to their account based on three and seven years of continuous membership. This new loyalty credit benefit will replace any current discounts in place.
Reminder - Member Rate and F&B Discount at Dubai Golf Clubs
As mentioned in my last Club Update, as of September all full golf members of Yas Links or Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, now receive a very special ‘Viya Golf’ or ‘VG’ rate to play any of the Dubai Golf courses. This rate is 50% off the Rack Rate of the course and is always the lowest rate available in the market. To avail of this rate, you simply need to show your membership card as proof of ID at the time of check-in at the club. From 1st November, this will mean you showing your digital membership card in Viya. Please also remember that you now also receive 25% discount in the F&B outlets across all Viya Golf and Dubai Golf clubs, including Topgolf Dubai, as well as an additional 5% in Viya Points when you show your Viya QR code on the ‘card’ page in the App.

The menu is under some final touches, and we will be introducing it in early November. As always, your feedback will be very much appreciated.

Corporate Events and Overseas Golf Groups at the Club
As covid related restrictions in Abu Dhabi and at the club begin to ease, we’re beginning to see the return of overseas golf groups and corporate golf events. This is a welcome sight for the club; however we are also very mindful that there will be times whereby the golf course won’t be available for members, which can be an area of concern. As a club, we will always endeavour to prioritise members whenever possible, however it’s important to appreciate that the facility also exists to service various other market segments, all of which are an important and essential part of the Abu Dhabi economy.
Our focus will always be to move large groups into off peak times (weekdays) to protect as much as possible, the peak times when members typically like to play. This won’t always be possible of course, however for the few times we are required to accommodate a large group during a weekend time, we will try and give you as much notice as possible, so that you can make alternative arrangements to play golf. During times when the golf course is unavailable, please do take advantage of your reciprocal benefits and/or Viya Golf discount across all of our golf courses.
Ladies Golf Mornings
At our recent monthly Captains Meeting, our Lady Captain – Sonia Cox, stated that although the ladies section is beginning to grow nicely, there are still quite a lot of lady members that don’t participate in the weekly Wednesday morning fun competition program. We of course appreciate that many of our lady members work and find it difficult to play golf on a midweek morning, however we believe that there could well be a number of ladies that are available, but perhaps are just not aware... On this note, if you would like to hear more information on the types of events and activities that we host on a Wednesday morning, please do reach out to Ann or Zoukaina and they will gladly connect you to either Sonia or our Lady Vice Captain – Leonie Sullivan.
I would like to thank you once again for your valuable time in reading this Club Update. Please do feel free to pass on any feedback to myself, your club captains or to any member of our management team, and we will review, consider and respond as quickly as possible.
Looking forward to seeing you at the Club soon.
With very best regards,
Julian

Lady Captaincy
We are delighted to announce, that as of 1st January, for the first time in the Club’s history, we will have a Lady Captain and Lady Vice Captain. In October we reached out to all lady members to ask for self-nominations. The deadline concluded at midnight on 31st October, after which we will review all applicants and make an announcement by the end of November. Julian Danby Cluster Club Manager Saadiyat Beach Golf ClubIt is a very welcome sight to see the usual social atmosphere return to the club as everyone filtered back from their travels. September and October have been particularly been busy not just with club life and the tournament calendar but also with several projects being completed or drawing to a close.
Our Academy restaurant has been upgraded to a fully fledged Jones the Grocer, complete with a new menu and wine list. Work is very nearly complete in Onze, a new Japanese/Peruvian restaurant that will occupy the space that used to host the Legends Steak House. This space has always had one of the best views in Dubai and now we will once again have a restaurant to do it justice. Work has also started to overhaul the Barhut at hole 14 and once complete it will facilitate live cooking for fresh menu items.
Congratulations to our Lady Captain, Beatrice Galleppini, on successfully hosting our Pink Day. The efforts of Bea, Shiba and Joy were only out shone by the outfits and decorations on display. Well done Ladies!
Congratulations also to John Fellingham who very commendably shot his age in October, 70 at the age of 70. Murmurs of worthy

praise have followed him around the club. Very well done John that is no small achievement around the Creek.
Our Scratch League and ICC teams are back under way with the former putting in a dominant performance in a 3-1 win at Dubai Hills at the start of October. We are fortunate to have some very historically successful Men’s and Women’s Scratch Teams and if you are able to, I know they would very much appreciate your support if you are able to join and cheer them on in either their home or away fixtures. Please speak to the Golf Operations team for further details.
Agronomy Update
Greenkeepers love and hate summer in equal measure! On the one hand it is the time of year we get to make the most progress, on the other hand it involves long days in the Dubai summer!
Our goal was for the golf course to play as frim and as fast as possible this high season. To achieve this, it was a case of out with the old and in with the new. On greens we aggressively removed a lot of old plant material and soil and replaced it with clean sand. Part of this process is called ‘scalp mowing’. This works in a similar way to hard pruning a hedge or tree. By removing the established older parts of the plant it encourages younger more vigorous growth.
A similar process was conducted on all surrounds and fairways. This has allowed us to expand our runoff areas and maintain the grass at a shorter height. As temperatures cool, we will be able to irrigate less frequently and the golf course will play firmer and faster than we have in previous years.
Fraze Mowing
In conjunction with the scalp mowing and topdressing on surrounds, we also reshaped our collars using a method called fraze mowing. This involves shaving off the grass and soil in small layers without removing all the roots. Once finished it can look quite alarming but the grass quickly regenerates from the remaining roots. Over the years sand has built up in our collars and that had created ‘dams’ which stopped the water draining efficiently off the greens. In winter these areas often sat wet and became quite thin. This year the greens will dry evenly and we should not see the same pattern of algae appearing in the edges of the greens.
Tee Construction
In 2021 we completed a major overhaul of all our tees, significantly expanding them to cope with the demands of peak winter play levels. To facilitate that our ladies kindly lent their Tee Boxes for everyone else to use whilst the Men’s Tees were rebuilt. In the summer of 2022 we have completed the reconstruction of all the Ladies Tees.
Members End
We have closed out the year by reinstating a bunker at the Members practice area. The previous bunker was lost when we expanded the range tee. Complete with 3 new target greens, the new bunker will provide members with the ability to practice the entire range of bunker shots from long irons to short ‘splashouts’.

Thank you for your support of our wonderful Club and I hope you enjoy reading the following updates from the various department heads.
Top-Ranked Stars Preparing for DP World Tour Championship in Dubai
Ryan Fox and Viktor Hovland will tee it up alongside Tommy Fleetwood, Shane Lowry and Jon Rahm at the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai from November 17-20, the final Rolex Series event of the 2022 season.
Joining World Number One Rory McIlroy and U.S. Open Champion Matt Fitzpatrick in the field, Fox and Hovland remain within touching distance of McIlroy, who has led the DP World Tour Rankings in Partnership with Rolex since July, as the four-time Major Champion bids to win both season-long competitions on the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR in the same year for the first time in his career.
The Northern Irishman first finished top of the season-long standings in 2012 and then won back-to-back Harry Vardon Trophies in 2014 and 2015.
New Zealander Fox has enjoyed a career-defining season in 2022 winning The Ras Al Khaimah Classic in February before going on to capture his second victory of the campaign last month at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, catapulting him into contention to win the DP World Tour Rankings.
The World Number 26 sits in second place, behind McIlroy and with two-time DP World Tour Championship winner Fitzpatrick on his tail in third position, requiring a strong finish to the season at Jumeirah Golf Estates to make history for his home nation and be crowned the Tour’s number one player.
“It’s been an incredible year and I’m excited to come to Dubai with a chance of winning the DP World Tour Rankings at our final event,” said Fox. “It wasn’t something I expected at the start of the year but I’m pretty happy to be where I am, and I’ll just go out there and do what I’ve done all year, try and beat the golf course and see what happens.”
Norwegian Hovland, currently fourth in the Rankings, has already tasted victory in Dubai after claiming his maiden Rolex Series title in January at the Dubai Desert Classic following a sensational play-off win to claim the famous Dallah trophy.
“I’ve really enjoyed playing in Dubai the last few years,” said the 25-year-old. “To win there in January was awesome and to be in the mix with a chance to win the DP World Tour Rankings at the end of the season is pretty cool, so I’m just excited to play the Earth Course and give it my best.”
Earlier this year, Lowry became a two-time Rolex Series winner after edging out McIlroy and Rahm to end his wait for a BMW PGA Championship victory after an action-packed final day at Wentworth Club. The Irishman has enjoyed his time at Jumeriah Golf Estates, finishing tied second in 2017 and has four top tens to his name on the famous Earth Course.
Rahm, a two-time winner of this event and European Number One in 2019, put on a stunning display to win the acciona Open de España presented by Madrid last month and delighted the fans who had turned out to watch him match the great Seve Ballesteros. The Spaniard is now a three-time winner of his national open after striding clear of his rivals with a nine-underpar 62 in his final round to claim his first DP World Tour win since his Major breakthrough at the 2021 U.S. Open.
Former European Number One and Ryder Cup star Fleetwoodwho famously won four points out of five in a memorable debut in the biennial event in 2018 - will also be hoping his experience
of winning tournaments in the UAE and fond memories of Dubai can help him go one better at the DP World Tour Championship having finished runner up in 2019.
Jumeirah Golf Estates will welcome the top 50 players available on the DP World Tour Rankings for the 14th edition of the DP World Tour Championship, the final Rolex Series event of the season.
The week will begin with the Rolex Pro-Am on Tuesday November 15, while a Community Day will be hosted on Friday November 18, inviting schools, junior golfers and people of determination to experience behind the scenes tours, golf clinics and workshops. Saturday November 19 will once again be Ladies Day and Sunday November 20 will be a dedicated Family Day.
The G4D (Golf for the Disabled) Tour Finale will also take place over Friday and Saturday, with the world’s best golfers with a disability competing in the final event of the season on the same setup as the DP World Tour professionals.
Free general admission tickets are available, with premium offerings in the Championship Chalet and Earth Lounge also available to purchase.

SCHOOL OF RULES
Dear Members,
In this month’s article, I would like to take a step back and look at a broader perspective regarding the Rules of Golf.
Rule 1 is often overlooked in the R&A Rules of Golf Manual, however it is actually the starting point from which the game of golf itself should be played, both competitively and casually.
Rule 1 falls under Part 1 of the R&A Rules of Golf Manual, titled ‘Fundamentals of the Game’.
Rule 1, in many ways, simply outlines the basics of the sport of golf, however its most important value is the precedent it sets for the overall approach to the game and mindset a golfer should adopt, when learning and playing the game.
1.1 The Game of Golf
For each stroke, the player: • Plays the course as he or she finds it, and
• Plays the ball as it lies.
1.2 Standards of Player Conduct
A) Conduct Expected of All Players
All players are expected to play in the spirit of the game by:
• Acting with integrity – for example, by following the Rules, applying all
penalties, and being honest in all aspects of play.
• Showing consideration to others – for example, by playing at a prompt pace, looking out for the safety of others, and not distracting the play of another player.
• Taking good care of the course –for example, by replacing divots, smoothing bunkers, repairing ballmarks, and not causing unnecessary damage to the course. It is worth noting here that the Emirates Golf Club Course Etiquette Policy encompasses each of these points and is expected across both the Majlis and Faldo Courses, at all times.
There is no penalty under the Rules for failing to act in this way, except that the Committee may disqualify a player for acting contrary to the spirit of the game if it finds that the player has committed serious misconduct.
B) Code of Conduct
The Committee, if it sees fit, also has the right to set its own standards of player conduct in a ‘Code of Conduct’ adopted as a Local Rule.
1.3 Playing by the Rules
A) Meaning of “Rules”; Terms of the Competition
The “Rules” means:
• Rules 1-24 and the Definitions in these Rules of Golf, and
• Any “Local Rules” the Committee adopts for the competition or the course.
Players are also responsible for complying with all “Terms of the Competition” adopted by the Committee (such as entry requirements, the form and dates of play, format sheet details, the number of rounds and the number and order of holes in a round).
B) Applying the Rules
(1) Player Responsibility for Applying the Rules - Players are responsible for applying the Rules to themselves:
• Players are expected to recognize when they have breached a Rule and to be honest in applying their own penalties.
o If a player knows that he or she has breached a Rule that involves a penalty and deliberately fails to apply the penalty, the player is disqualified.
o If two or more players deliberately agree to ignore any Rule or penalty they know applies and any of those players have started the round, they are disqualified (even if they have not yet acted on the agreement).
• When it is necessary to decide questions of fact, a player is responsible for considering not only his or her own knowledge of the facts but also all other information that is reasonably available.
• A player may ask for help with the Rules from a referee or the Committee, but if help is not available in a reasonable
time the player must play on and raise the issue with a referee or the Committee when they become available.
(2)Accepting Player’s “Reasonable Judgment” in Determining a Location When Applying the Rules.
• Many Rules require a player to determine a spot, point, line, area or other location under the Rules, such as: o Estimating where a ball last crossed the edge of a penalty area, o Estimating or measuring when dropping or placing a ball in taking relief, or
o Replacing a ball on its original spot (whether the spot is known or estimated).
• Such determinations about location need to be made promptly and with care but often cannot be precise.
• So long as the player does what can be reasonably expected under the circumstances to make an accurate determination, the player’s reasonable judgment will be accepted even if, after the stroke is made, the determination is shown to be wrong by video evidence or other information.
• If a player becomes aware of a wrong determination before the stroke is made, it must be corrected.
C) Penalties
(1)Actions Giving Rise to Penalties - A penalty applies when a breach of a Rule results from a player’s own actions or the actions of his or her caddie.
A penalty also applies when:
• Another person takes an action that would breach the Rules if taken by the player or caddie and that person does so at the player’s request or while acting with the player’s authority, or
• The player sees another person about to take an action concerning the player’s
ball or equipment that he or she knows would breach the Rules if taken by the player or caddie and does not take reasonable steps to object or stop it from happening.
(2) Levels of Penalties - Penalties are meant to cancel out any potential advantage to the player. There are three main penalty levels:
• One-Stroke Penalty: This penalty applies in both match play and stroke play under certain Rules where either (a) the potential advantage from a breach is minor or (b) a player takes penalty relief by playing a ball from a different place than where the original ball lies.
• General Penalty (Loss of Hole in Match Play, Two-Stroke Penalty in Stroke Play): This penalty applies for a breach of most Rules, where the potential advantage is more significant than where only one penalty stroke applies.
• Disqualification: In both match play and stroke play, a player may be disqualified from the competition for certain actions or Rule breaches involving serious misconduct or where the potential advantage is too significant for the player’s score to be considered valid.
(3)No Discretion to Vary PenaltiesPenalties need to be applied only as provided in the Rules:
• Neither a player nor the Committee has authority to apply penalties in a different way, and
• A wrong application of a penalty or a failure to apply a penalty may stand only if it is too late to correct it.
In match play, the player and opponent may agree how to decide a Rules issue so long as they do not deliberately agree to apply the Rules in the wrong way.
(4) Applying Penalties to Multiple Breaches of the Rules - If a player breaches multiple Rules or the same Rule multiple times before an intervening event happens (such as making a stroke or becoming aware of the breach), the penalty that applies depends on what the player did:
• When Breaches Resulted from Unrelated Acts - The player gets a separate penalty for each breach.
• When Breaches Resulted from a Single Act or Related Acts - The player gets only one penalty; but if the act or acts breached multiple Rules involving different penalties, the higher-level penalty applies.

LADY CAPTAIN’S MESSAGE
Dear Members,
It’s almost two months since the beginning of the season; time flies when you are having fun, right? And what a fantastic two months we have had!
Trying to recall the highlights brings to my memory so many laughs, faces, hugs and of course rounds of golf.
The Season Opener 2022-2023 for the Ladies Section will be a forever great memory in my mind, not only because I managed to deliver a long drive like in the old days (199 yards), but because I was showered with the affection of the wonderful women who make up the section.
The format was Scramble, always a fun one to play with friends and have lots of laughs together. Some pisco sours (traditional Peruvian cocktail) in between and we were ready to have our traditional lunch and prize-giving presentation at our fantastic new Pavilion…how truly lucky we are. A day of love, laughs and fun crowned by a gathering in a fantastic new facility for the enjoyment of all.
The food was excellent, Chef Dyan and his team make their best effort to produce some Peruvian dishes very successfully for the enjoyment of all the ladies.
After the main speech, we managed to put together a presentation about the future trip to Peru, which I anticipate will be a dream trip.
Sometimes you take for granted all the effort and dedication that is needed to create an event like this, from our fantastic
Management team (Barney, Cian, Joe and Conor), Nishanti, Steen and Shirash, to Mary-Ann and Anoop, and so many others building up a moment that will remain in our memories for ever.
Four days later we did it all again, this time on a bigger scale for our Mixed Season Opener. Scramble format again: we had a full house that day. Our dear Captain, Campbell Steedman, had his honour drive, and the Lady Captain had hers for a second time (unfortunately not as long as four days before!). The atmosphere was tremendous, I felt so proud and privileged for being in the position I am as a Lady Captain supported by so many people and surrounded by so many fantastic friends.
The icing on the cake came in the form of a much anticipated and awaited Colleagues Party. On the 10th of October, after two long years of covid postponement, finally our colleagues could have their well-deserved party.
It was the first time I had the opportunity to attend such a party. If I could express in one sentence the essence of the event, I would say…What a fabulous night!
Our colleagues dressed in their national attire or summer dress. All were very happy, very willing to celebrate and to have a good time together. I have to say how impressed I was by the talent competition; these guys can sing and dance like professionals! It was an honour to be part of the judges who voted for the winners, even when in my heart all of them deserved to be winners.
The most striking realization for me was to see how many colleagues we have working at Emirates Golf Club. That night they were more than 600 hundred - partying together (only Emirates Golf Club and Topgolf) and a good number couldn’t make it that night.
That means that we have over 700 colleagues working at our Club…that was the first time I understood the magnitude of enterprise Emirates Golf Club means in terms of human beings working with us and for our enjoyment each time we put a foot in our Club.
More than 700 souls, each one a whole and a unique world, with their own dreams, expectations and desires, with happy moments but also with their own worries and responsibilities, but nevertheless always with a big smile on their face to greet us and make us feel welcome every time we arrive at the club.
Many of our colleagues are anonymous to us members since they work in offices and places we hardly see, all working toward a single goal… making our stay in the Club the most pleasant possible, no matter if it is on the golf course, in the club-house, on the driving range, in the locker rooms, the gym, swimming pool, tennis and padel courts, and the restaurants. They are always there, a constant force that keep everything working.
Emirates Golf Club seems to me like a well calibrated machine where each person who works there is a little piece of it, all finely tuned to make each task complement the other and together make that machine deliver what was promised…a great time and an enjoyable experience, how lucky we really are!
As the Lady Captain it’s a privilege to be part of that unique machine, even when it is only for a brief time. Having a close view of how things work at our Club made me understand much better the enormous effort and dedication in human resources that is needed to make Emirates Golf Club work smoothlysynchronised on so many levels. Each person working in the club has an important and unique role, always done with lots of care and love for their job and the Club. My sincere gratitude to each and every one of them, you are simply amazing!
EMIRATES GOLF CLUB CAPTAIN
CAPTAIN’S MESSAGE
Dear Members,
Friendship – one of the core values of life, and a key aspect of the past two months since assuming the Captaincy of Emirates Golf Club. Not only has it been an honour to start the 2022-2023 Season as Captain of the Club, it has been a pleasure to meet new friends – both new and existing Club members – and to see how friendship creates a strong club culture within Emirates Golf Club.
Despite a personally disappointing drive (which at least cleared estimates of “Gin & Tonic” and “78 yards”) to start the Season Opener, the event was a memorable occasion and marked the start of not only our new season, but also a very special year ahead personally. With the Majlis having been in good condition throughout the summer, it was in exceptionally fine condition for the Season Opener, and had it not been for the Scramble format of the event (congratulations to Andrew Robinson, Wendy Robinson, Ken Newell and Senga Newall on winning the event), I would very much have enjoyed testing the bunkers, rough, sand and water hazards. Instead, it was a pleasure to play with Marivi, Fiona and Frank as we all engaged in what will be an exciting and privileged season for all of us.
With the introduction of a traditional Scottish Quaich as the Season Opener trophy providing the basis for an entertaining post-golf evening, and with the launch of the Club’s new Pavilion, the theme of friendship continued into the night, with some memorable entertainment in the Members’ Lounge setting a possible theme for the season ahead!! In summary, a great day, for which thank you all for your hard work in arranging, and delivering, the same.
Two days after the Season Opener came one of the most entertaining and humbling events which I have had the privilege to attend for many years – the Emirates Golf Club Colleagues’ Party. Having been unable to host such an event since pre-Covid in 2019, and having had to reschedule from May, the Colleagues’ Party was a very special event, hosted by the Club for almost 700 Emirates Golf Club and Topgolf staff. The spirit of collegiality, engagement and friendship amongst the entire group highlighted what a privilege it is to be a member of Emirates Golf Club, and the party was reflective of how all our Club colleagues deliver such exceptional service and support to all our members. In addition, the entertainment provided by all through their talent competition was both highly competitive and of the highest standard. I am just glad that the MCC judging panel was not assessed by the competition participants for our own musical efforts! Overall, a tremendous event, with perhaps the most important takeaway as Club Captain being that the culture, friendship and commitment of all our Club colleagues simply reconfirmed why a critical aspect of our membership must always be to respect and engage with such colleagues – they deliver a unique experience to all of us, and deserve our support at all times (in relation to which, thank you to all members who kindly contributed gifts to the evening’s prize giving). Thank you to all our colleagues, at every level of Emirates Golf Club, for all you do, and for inviting me, and the MCC members, to join such a special event.
In addition to these two events, the start of the Captaincy has also brought a number of golf events, including the Tri-Nations, the OMA Emirates Corporate Invitational, the Seniors’ Championship and our various medal rounds – all of which have been enjoyable, with the
opportunity often to play with members with whom I have not played previously (usually because they are reigning champions). However perhaps one of the most unexpected events was playing in the Cazoo French Open Pro-Am with our Vice-Captain, Frank Duggan, as guests of DP World. As with Club tournaments, we had the opportunity to play with the reigning champion (Nicolas Colsaerts) and Irish Open champion (Adrian Meronk), and also, as with Club tournaments, neither of the players playing with me won the competition! It was, however, a great event on a very challenging course, and a pleasure to be joined by Frank (and Maura).
Finally, in relation to the first two months of the Captaincy, a few thoughts about the Club off the course and away from events.
We have had our first meetings as the MCC for the current season, and there is a strong commitment across the Committee and the Club to continue to focus on the etiquette of golf. This needs us all to continue to focus on on-course matters such as repairing divots, raking bunkers, fixing pitch marks and maintaining pace of play, and clubhouse matters such as dress code and respect for staff –all of which reflect on the culture of the Club. In addition, there is commitment to support the growth of the Junior section of the Club, and I expect that we will see increased engagement in how we encourage greater family and junior participation in the Club – not just on the course, but also in using the pool, F&B, spa, padel tennis, Topgolf, tennis, the gym and squash facilities.
Marivi and I have also been looking into how we can support certain charitable work in the UAE, and we will share further thoughts on this as we move forward during the season.
My final thought about the Captaincy to date is to thank Marivi, Frank and Fiona for all their friendship and support as Lady Captain, Vice-Captain and Lady Vice-Captain respectively, together with that of our tremendous Management team (Chris, Barney, Cian, Joe and Conor), Reservations, Course Management and F&B teams. You have all made the first two months of Captaincy a very special experience, and I look forward to continuing to work together throughout the rest of the season.
As the Captain’s prize giving speeches have occasionally mentioned aspects of my background in Scotland, I will just close with a Scottish expression to all of you as friends.
Yours aye, Campbell

Mike Gerbich Cup 2022
Sunday 25th of September saw the playing of the annual Mike Gerbich Cup. The 2022 Cup was competed for around a black tee Majlis course in very high temperatures and humidity.
As many of our members know, Mike Gerbich was a familiar face around Emirates Golf Club for many years. As a long-standing member and former captain of the club, Mike had been both playing partner and friend to many of the members for many years here at Emirates. He would commonly feature around the driving range or challenging the likes of Ryder Cup winner Henrik Stenson to a game around the back tees of the Majlis.
Sadly, Mike passed away in July, 2016, just five days before his great friend Henrik Stenson outplayed Phil Mickelson in an epic Open Championship final round at Royal Troon to lift the Claret Jug for the first time. Henrik kindly dedicated his win to the great man with the statement “This one’s for you Mike!” to conclude his acceptance speech on the 18th green.
Despite the unforgiving weather conditions and black tee set up, there were many players who put very good rounds together. At the conclusion of play, four players came in tied for the lead on 37 points in the Overall Net Event. Our winner by countback for 2022 was Tauseef Khan. Tauseef had an eventful back nine to say the least, carding four net birdies against four net bogeys and only one net par to win out over the rest on back six countback. Max Quack came a close second on the day, losing by a single point on the back six holes. Mustafa Khan claimed the third-place spot, losing out on the top step by just a single point on the back nine count back.
The Division A (Hcap 0 to 14) top spot on the day went to Dalip Tripathi who got off to a fast start of two under par net for the front nine. Dalip held firm on the back nine to finish with 36 points and claim the first prize for the division. Second place went to Paul Byrne with 34 points. Paul carded four net birdies on the day to ensure his spot as Runner up for the event.
Division B (Hcap 15 to 28) saw Robert Staton come out on top with 37 points. Despite a costly run of six’s on 16, 17 and 18, Robert played a very solid round and deservedly claimed division B’s top prize. Ravi Khanna was this year’s division B runner up with 36 points.
Sanjay Dhandsa won the overall gross prize for the event. Despite a rough start with the triple bogey on the fifth, Sanjay persevered with four birdies in the next six holes to finish with a 73.
Ladies Medal supported by Park Hyatt Dubai
Sunday, 25th September 2022
The first Ladies Medal sponsored by Park Hyatt took place with 48 ladies competing on the Majlis Course.
The Silver Division A (Hcap 0 to 14) medal prize was taken by our 2022 vice-captain Fiona Berry. Fiona carded two birdies on the day, the first coming on hole two followed by the second on hole 16. Fiona kept her composure over the closing stretch to shoot -1 net on her final three holes to finish with a very solid score of 72 net. In the Silver Division A runner spot for this year was Glory Xavier. Glory played her way to a 75 around the Majlis course with three net birdies on the day. Yulia Golubeva finished the day in third place after a very respectable round of 76 with a strong finish of a net birdie on 18.
The Silver Division A (Hcap 15 to 23) saw Atsumi Aoto come out on top with a net 74. Despite finding trouble on the last two holes with a net bogey and double bogey on #17 and #18, Atsumi had done enough to secure the Division B. Deirdre Kemp was runner up, while Fari Sayeed came third.
The Bronze Division (Hcap 24 to 36) was won by Alison Cowley. Alison carded the finest net score of the day with a net 71. Alison battled her way to a strong finish of two net birdies and a net eagle on the final four holes to clinch this month’s Bronze Division medal. Michele Carlsson finished runner up with a net 73.
Jayshree Gupta won the Overall Gross prize for the event. Despite a tricky start of two sixes recorded on the first three holes, Jayshree responded by playing the next three par 3’s in 2 under par gross to win the prize.
Emirates Golf Club Seniors Championship
2022
Saturday the 1st of October saw the playing of the 2022 Seniors Championship at Emirates Golf Club. A total of 87 golfers faced high temperatures and humidity around a tough Majlis course to compete for this year’s Senior championship prize.
Rohit Gupta, with a very impressive gross score of 76, is this year’s Emirates Golf Club Seniors Champion. Rohit played a very solid front nine consisting of two birdies against two bogeys to make the turn in level par and held on to claim this years’ Senior Championship title. Our runners up spot for this year goes to Veneet Mohan. Veneet navigated his way around the Majlis course in 81 strokes. A birdie on the long par 5 third hole helped Veneet to finish two shots clear of third and take home the 2022 second place trophy. Third place goes to Kush Sama. Kush shot an 83 gross and with the help of a birdie on the tenth, edging out over fourth on back nine countback.
Similar to last year’s event, we have a Super Senior division within this 2022 championship. The Super Seniors division consisted of all players over the age of sixty. Continuing a wonderful theme of his captaincy for this year, club captain
Campbell Steedman, wanted to bring an essence of old Scottish heritage to this event. Campbell had a beautiful handmade hickory “Sunday Stick” created for the 2022 Super Senior Winner. “The Sunday Stick” was an old Scottish creation back in the mid19th Century, during which time it was forbidden to play golf on the sabbath. The Scottish people of the time had a solution to this, a wooden walking stick made with a discrete clubhead shaped handle. The “Sunday Stick” to an innocent onlooker would appear a normal walking aid but would allow gentlemen of the time to sneak away and use it to play golf when out of sight. The recipient of this wonderful prize as well as the Super Senior trophy
was Nelly Amarnani. Nelly carded backto-back birdies on holes #15 and #16 to finish with a gross score of 85.
The third and final division of this year’s championship is the Overall Net Division. Taking the top spot with a Net score of 70 is Massimo Gallizioli. Massimo collected seven net birdies on the day taking first place by one single point. The Second Net prize winner for this year is Stuart Dunlop. Stuart, on his birthday, gave it his all coming down the stretch with 3 net birdies and a net eagle in the closing five holes to finish with a net 71. Our third-place winner for this year is Kirtan Desai. Kirtan played a solid round of net 74 to take the thirdplace trophy.
With a tremendous score of 58 net, our winners for today are Genie Owiti, Anne Gely Bouigue, Christine Sprunck, and Noemy Bertuol. Genie and her team played a brilliant round of golf consisting of 12 net birdies and finishing with a net eagle on 18 to win the event by two shots. A fantastic effort by the ladies on a toughly set up Majlis course. Our Runners Up spot for this year goes to Alison Cowley, Laura Mann, Yana Jamieson and Victoria Anikina. The ladies carded a very impressive 8 net birdies and two net eagles on the day to come home with a net score of 60 to claim second place by just a single point. Taking this year’s third spot is the team of Margaret Breen, Sabine Chaudry, Haide Wright and Michele Carlson. Margret and her team finished the event with a net score of 61. The ladies navigated the majlis course with eleven birdies and no bogeys to win third place on back nine countback.
For her Captains Drive, Marivi hit a wonderful drive straight up the middle with a total distance of 197 yards. Closest guess to the correct number and winner of a bottle of MOET Champagne is Alison Cowley with an accurate guess of 199 yards.

The 2022 Ladies Season Opener took place here at the Emirates Golf Club. We had a fantastic turn out of sixty-eight ladies taking part in a fourball scramble event around our Majlis course in honour of our new Lady Captain for 2022, Maria Arias. As is tradition on the season opener, the ladies playing in the event gathered around the first tee to watch Marivi’s opening tee shot. As a sign of friendship and respect for our new Lady Captain, the ladies all wore red and white colours today in honor of Marivi and her home country of Peru. Marivi, amidst a sea of her home colours, hit a wonderful drive straight down the centre of the fairway to great cheers and applause. Following the ceremonious events of the first tee, all ladies headed out onto the course in their teams to compete for today’s prizes.
A number of on course events took place throughout today’s play. There were prized for nearest the pins on three of the four par 3’s and the par 4 second hole, Straightest drive on the eighth as well as a “Guess the Captains Drive” competition on the first hole. Nearest the pin on the fourth hole after a brilliant shot was Anne Gely Bouigue. LADY CAPTAIN’S MESSAGE
Dear Members,
I hope you have all had an enjoyable break and are easing back into your usual routine and playing golf once again. Over the summer we have been fortunate to have welcomed some new ladies to our Wednesday morning section, its always great to see them settle in and exchange stories with our regular group.
We started off our season with a friendly scramble on Fire, the pairing of Bettina Schrockenfuchs & Mitsuko Emmerson came out best with their score of 69 nearly as hot as the September temperatures.
Another well supported morning was the September Lounge Spa Ladies individual Stableford, winning the desired vouchers were Tanya Harrison with 35 points and NTP going to Anna Abbott. Other notable scores were Glory Xavier amassing 44 points claiming the top prize in our Park Hyatt members event and definitely worth a mention was the 41 points scored by Bettina Smith in her 1st ever ladies competition. Philippa Stumbles also produced her best result with 40 points in our
individual stableford on Fire. Our Lounge Spa October Ladies was won by Slyvia van Der Tol securing 37 points and Kristen Blomeley & Jacqueline de Vries clutching the NTP prizes.
Recently, Evelyn Downham, our Vice Captain & I attended the ICC AGM and this year we have been drawn with Emirates & Yas, both part of the Dubai Golf/Viya family. We are all excited about the challenge and celebrating what is, a wonderful ladies tournament. Once again massive thanks to Charlotte Austwick and Ginger Delacretaz for sharing their valuable wealth of experience and assisting in preparing us for our ICC fixtures.
Another great event was the new members 9 hole scramble which was played over the Fire Course. This is always a nice fun evening with the opportunity to sit down afterwards to get to know each other on the terrace, especially nice in these very pleasant evenings
September at Jumeirah Golf Estates usually means the start of the scaffolding work for the much-anticipated DP World Tour Championship
which coincides with heavy testing conditions on Earth, we wouldn’t have it any other way. Credit to Stuart Horwood and his hardworking team for the outstanding work they do in producing a course worthy of the DP World season ending finale and a very worthy champion in the highly competitive field.
Finally, as this is my last time writing for Club Life I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude and thanks to Jumeirah Golf Estates Management for allowing me this incredible opportunity. This has been an exciting year at Jumeirah Golf Estates with all the tremendous improvements made by the club, the restaurants, club facilities and most importantly the outstanding friendly and helpful staff, a really unique community for all of us. I need to highlight the outstanding colleagues that we have at the club, more like family really, a very big thank you to one and all.
To the well spirited Jumeirah Golf Estates Ladies thank you!!! The enthusiasm, buzz and support that we all share has made it a really unforgettable time together, it’s been my privilege to serve a brilliant group of ladies.
Club Captain, Steve Drake thank you for sharing this journey. I hope that as Jumeirah Golf Estates inaugural Captains we have started to build a strong community for our members and with the assistance of our very capable Vice Captains, Evelyn Downham and Jonny Hall and the dedicated commitment from our MCC members the future is very strong for Jumeirah Golf Estates.
thanks Sheila McIlroy

Saturday, 24th September 2022
Yas Links Abu Dhabi had its annual beat the pros competition. The format was a 4-man Texas Scramble, and the aim was to see if anyone could shoot lower than our Club Professionals (Karl Dunn, Jaco Stander, Danny Jakubowski and Marc Arnold).
The Yas Links Professionals went round in an impressive 13 under with a strong finish of five birdies on the last five holes. A tough score to beat however two teams were successful in doing so. In first place with an absolutely outstanding score of a net 56.9 (-15.1) was the team of Damien Ward, Dan Kirkwood, Yousuf Kerr and Miguel Veronesi. A seriously good score which featured the shot of the tournament with Dan Kirkwood holing out from 130 yards on hole 12 for eagle. The runners up and only missing out the top spot by 0.3 shots was the team of Andrew Lett, Mark McDonagh, Michael Gibson and Kealan Bolger. Their net 57.9 (-14.9) was a card mostly full of birdies and net eagles. A very well done to both teams for their fantastic display of golf round the Links.

Links Charity Golf Day
Saturday, 22nd October 2022
Yas Links hosted its annual Charity Golf Day. The purpose of the day was to raise money for Operation Smile. A Volunteer-based non-profit organization that believe that anyone born with a cleft condition deserves safe, effective and timely surgery and comprehensive care, regardless of where they call home. The day was packed with luxury silent auction items, raffle tickets and 18 different on course competitions which all helped raise money for Operation Smile.
The format of the Golf Day was a Four Player Team Shambles with the best two out of four scores contributing toward the team score.
In first place with an outstanding team score of 104 points was Keith Speller, Ted Speller, Chris Wilson and Darren Maskell. Keith Speller especially had a fantastic round. One we are sure he never predicted as he stormed his way through the course and finished with a net 58. Runner up and only missing out by 2 points goes to David Evans, Karl Krofton, Arash Saidi and Marthinus Neethling with a combined score of 103 points. Marthinus Neethling was the low man in that foursome as he birdied his way to a net 61. Third place and only missing the top spot by 3 points with a score of 102 was Colin Gow, Russell Stewart, Noel Connolly and Dean Stothard. The team all shot in the 60s with Dean Stothard scoring a 64 to secure them third place.
However, the main aim of the event was to raise money for charity and with that the Golf Day managed to raise over AED 80,000 for Operation Smile. A massive well done to all who were involved in making that happen.

Beat the Pros
Sunday, 18th September 2022
The winter season at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club kicked off with 2022 Beat the Pros – a exciting Texas Scramble format with one goal – to beat the Saadiyat Pros team. This year, it consisted of Danny Jakubowski, Pablo Torres, Matt Kidd & Reynard Kleynhans. The scoring throughout was extremely close with only 1.3 shots difference between 1st place & 4th place. Unfortunately for our professionals, they finished as the 4th place team with a score of -15 under. The defending champions Brian Lawson, Richard Croudson, Shawn Driedger & Tyrone Waugh retained their title with a fantastic score of -16.3 under par. Will they make in three in a row next year?
