UAE’s Christmas cheer embraces diversity and unity

ne of the most anticipated and cherished occasions worldwide is the joyous celebration of Christmas. Even in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a country with a unique culture and predominantly Muslim population, the spirit of inclusivity and respect for diverse cultures is palpable.
Among the diverse expatriate communities, Filipinos hold a special place in the UAE’s cultural tapestry. Known for their strong family values, Filipinos bring a unique perspective to the Christmas season. It is said that they observe the longest Christmas season in the world, spanning from September to December. As the “ber” months arrive, Filipino-inhabited offices resonate with the familiar tunes of Christmas carols. For Filipinos, the pervasive Christmas
spirit is a powerful reminder that, no matter the physical distance, the essence of the season resides deep within their hearts. This enduring connection to family and tradition infuses the holiday season with an extra layer of warmth and significance. It serves as a beacon of hope and a source of strength, especially for those who may be far from their loved ones. What is most remarkable is how this spirit of Christmas is not confined to any one group, but rather radiates outward, embracing all who are eager to partake in the magic of the season. In the UAE, Christmas becomes a unifying force, bringing together people from all walks of life to celebrate the universal values of love, joy, and togetherness.
V I B E S M A G A Z I N E
As October dawns, a remarkable transformation sweeps through the UAE. Storefronts and establishments adorn themselves with glittering decorations, towering Christmas trees, and an array of twinkling lights. This enchanting atmosphere persists through December, enveloping the nation in the warm embrace of Christmas. The streets are alive with the festive spirit, and the air is filled with joyous anticipation.
In the UAE, Christmas transcends religious boundaries and becomes a celebration of happiness, uniting people in the festivities of life and prosperity. It serves as a testament to the power of cultural exchange and mutual respect, reinforcing the belief that our shared humanity is cause enough for celebration.
D V M - D U B A I
The UAE, often referred to as an expat haven, has drawn people from around the globe to pursue their dreams, resulting in a vibrant and harmonious community. The dense expatriate population in the UAE has played a pivotal role in fostering cultural openness, inclusivity, and a prevailing sense of peace. While individuals from various nationalities and backgrounds coexist harmoniously, they also come together to celebrate their respective cultural festivities. Among these, the Christmas season holds a special place.

he United Arab Emirates, a country renowned for its glistening skyscrapers, opulent way of life, and robust economy, is also evidence of the harmonious coexistence of various nations and cultures. Over time, emirateforeigner ties have blossomed, creating a distinctive fabric of mutual understanding and cultural interaction. This article explores the history of foreigners living in the United Arab Emirates and demonstrates how many groups have coexisted peacefully to form a cohesive community. Since the UAE’s founding in 1971, the number of foreigners living there has increased dramatically. The region’s expanding oil sector and the prospect of economic riches first drew foreigners to the area. With time, the nation’s economy broadened and it turned into a major international centre for commerce, banking, and tourism, drawing in businesspeople from all over the world. More than 200 different nationalities call the United Arab Emirates home, and they all add their own distinctive cultures, dialects, and traditions to the dynamic fabric of Emirati society. Through cultural festivals, gatherings, and programmes that promote intercultural understanding, this variety is recognised. The UAE’s dedication to acceptance

and tolerance is essential to the development of interactions between Emiratis and foreigners. The nation’s authorities have put policies into place to foster an inclusive society in which citizens of all races, nationalities, and religions may prosper. Projects like the 2019 “Year of Tolerance” strengthened this dedication by encouraging interfaith communication, cross-cultural interaction, and a respectful attitude towards one another. In order to further advance international unity, the UAE has also founded organisations such as the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation, which focuses on cultural and educational initiatives. Harmonious relations are greatly aided by the economic integration of expatriates. The financial, medical,
educational, and technological sectors of the economy all greatly benefit from the presence of foreign workers. The UAE’s growth is fueled by this mutually beneficial connection, which also adds a wide spectrum of talents and knowledge to the professional scene In turn, Emiratis gain from exposure to various work styles, viewpoints, and international best practises, fostering a vibrant and cutthroat business climate. The UAE’s ascent to prominence on the global scene has been greatly aided by this information and skill exchange. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) welcomes variety, but it also makes a deliberate effort to protect and promote Emirati culture. The government funds programmes designed to guarantee that the next generation stays deeply rooted in their cultural heritage. Cultural heritage events and initiatives like as the “Emirati School Programme” provide young Emiratis the chance to learn about their history, language, and customs. The peaceful cohabitation of foreigners and Emiratis in the United Arab Emirates is a bright example of how different groups may work together to create a thriving and welcoming community. The UAE has created a paradigm for peaceful relations that other countries might aspire to by committing to tolerance, economic integration, and cultural exchange. The success story of the United Arab Emirates is evidence of the strength of unity in diversity as the globe gets more interconnected.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS the hopelessness all compound into a deep sense of distress. Gender role expectations can have a profound impact on men and how post breakup loneliness can affect them. The general assumption is that men get over breakups fairly quickly and almost immediately look at it as “freedom”, which is furthest from the truth. “While taking care of ourselves through this very difficult time, feeling lonely will inevitably come up- be aware of it and when you feel ready, take active steps to overcome it” says Zubair. Enjoy your own company: The most significant step is to enjoy your own company. A hundred friends won’t do for you what some good time with your own self can, if you’re happy in your own company and content being by yourself. Spend time doing things you have always wanted to do - read, explore, go to the activity class you always wanted to go for, play that sport, take yourself out for coffee, remember there is nothing holding you back. Reach out to three new people: The next recommendation is a bit more intimidating. Reach out to three new people, an old friend, colleague, someone you met at a gathering and hit off but never remembered to follow up with. Remember, the goal is just to make the step, without any expectations.
M A G A Z I N E
One of the hardest hitting feelings of loneliness comes with breaking up of a romantic relationship. The heartbreak, the grief, the loneliness,
Loneliness is an all consuming, “embarrassing” feeling that no one likes to experience. However, statistically, it is one of the most common and distressing human experiences. Heart break is difficult enough as it is, the loneliness that accompanies it just makes the process all the more difficult. So be kind to yourself and be gentle with yourself, take steps that resonate with you and you are comfortable with.
V I B E S
“In practice we have found, both men and women in Dubai are equally distressed by loneliness” comments Zuha Zabair, CDAlicensed psychologist from Thrive’s Wellbeing Centre. “However, women find it somewhat easier to be vulnerable in fostering those new connections and reigniting the old ones than men. When we look at men and loneliness, the stigma around emotional awareness and the overbearing need to be “strong and independent” often comes in the way of taking active steps to combat loneliness”.
D V M - D U B A I
H
uman beings are wired with a fundamental, biological need for connection, it stems from our earliest days when “fear of rejection” quite literally translated to a threat to life. “Social pain” from that time - the fear of falling behind and not being accepted in a group - can now take the shape of loneliness. However, being alone and being lonely are two completely different concepts. An individual can be completely satisfied and content alone, and feel isolated and lonely when surrounded by a group of people. Loneliness is a subjective, and deeply internal experience. Just like we seek out water when we are thirsty, we seek human connection when we are lonely.
Sense of community: Being part of a community is just as meaningful as nurturing one-on-one relationships, don’t be afraid to try new sports or hobbies . Even if you don’t end up talking to most people there, just the sense of belonging and connection, and something to look forward to every week can be very helpful. Another way to engage in communities can be volunteering groups, cultural groups, or art communities. There is something for everyone in Dubai!
