The Dubbo Region’s rich cultural history began with the Wiradjuri people, who have called this land home for over 40,000 years. As you explore the Dubbo Region take a moment to acknowledge this beautiful land’s Traditional Custodians. We ask all visitors to respect and preserve the land and culture that has survived over thousands of years, and pay respects to Elders both past and present and extend that respect to other Indigenous Australians on country. Terramungamine Reserve, just off Burraway Road, Dubbo.

The waterways of the Dubbo Region have always held a special significance

to the Wiradjuri people of this area. The Macquarie River’s traditional name is Wambuul meaning ‘winding river’. The ebb and flow of the Wambuul through Dubbo and Wellington provided many ceremonial sites and gathering places for the local tribes. Visitors can still see evidence of one of the important gathering places at Terramungamine Reserve near Dubbo where the rocks bear over 150 grooves and carvings created over many years as the Wiradjuri people shaped tools and spears (pictured left).

The Dubbo Wiradjuri Garden (pictured right and below) offers the opportunity to further immerse the senses in Wiradjuri culture. This culturally significant and accessible meeting space for the community features large spans of open grass and accessible path systems representing the three key rivers of the area. Conversation is encouraged by the two large sandstone yarning circles, while native gardens with vegetation endemic to the area provides a serene atmosphere. The focal point of the garden space is the 50 metre rainbow serpent alive with a variety of native plant life.

The Dubbo Region is welcoming several exciting new additions in 2022. These amazing tourism attractions will showcase Dubbo’s natural, cultural and heritage assets to enhance our tourism experience and share more of Dubbo’s unique story with Australia and the world.

DUBBO WIRADJURI TO U R I S M C E N T R E The yet to be named Dubbo Wiradjuri Tourism Experience will be a space of cultural learning for visitors to our Region. The facility will provide opportunity for the original custodians of the land to tell their story, and share the story of Wiradjuri. The experience will include an art gallery and museum space, yarning circles, dedicated cultural performance areas and trails linking the centre to the Wiradjuri Gardens of Elizabeth Park. A cafe featuring local produce and Indigenous inspired flavour will entice and offer sanctuary to celebrate culture.

A public Plaza green space is being created in the centre of Dubbo. The Plaza will offer an open area for all to enjoy, from Macquarie Street to the State Heritage listed Old Dubbo Gaol in the heart of Dubbo’s CBD. The Plaza will provide exposure for the Gaol’s gatehouse entrance and Gaol wall as well as the ornate Post Office colonnade and its iconic clock tower, creating a unique civic space in Dubbo’s justice precinct. A large-scale, unique kinetic artwork will adorn the neighbouring building’s façade. The theme for the artwork is 'community, country, connection: finding common ground'. Reclamation and development of a public heritage Plaza at Old Dubbo Gaol will contribute to creating a year-round destination for visitation based on an improved and culturally-rewarding visitor experience.

THE WONDER UNDERGROUND

Australia’s prehistoric past is within reach at the incredible Wellington Caves. Unearth the mysteries of megafauna that once roamed the land and find out what those miners were up to 100 years ago in the Phosphate Mine. Marvel at the 15m tall stalagmite in the Cathedral Cave and the delicate dripping stalactites in the Gaden Cave.

HIT THE WATER

Adventure beckons at Lake Burrendong or ‘The Dam’ as it’s known to locals. Spike the adrenaline in the warmer months and try your hand at water skiing, wakeboarding and biscuiting. Pack the reels, rods and tackle box and you may just take home the ‘big one’ with many different fish species to catch. More than just aquatic life, the dam is a haven for native Australian animals and there’s no better way to spot them than on a scenic hike. Or head out on the gently winding waterways of the Macquarie River, a favourite destination for kayakers and stand up paddleboarders.

John Oxley explored the Wellington Valley in 1817 and described it as ‘beautifully picturesque’.

HEAD BACK TO THE BUSH

Immerse yourself in the serenity of Wellington’s countryside at the 2,123 hectare Mount Arthur Reserve. There are six marked walking trails ranging from 30 minutes to a half day trek and vary in difficulty with all trails delivering spectacular views of the surrounding valley. Along the way you can enjoy spotting some 400 species of native flora and fauna that call the Reserve home along with many native Australian animals and birds. Or discover a natural haven at the 164 hectare Burrendong Botanic Garden and Arboretum where you can wander through Fern Gully, a man-made rainforest situated beneath an enormous suspended, thatched canopy.

GARDENS AND GREENS

Mingle with Mother Nature and enjoy the tranquillity of the Osawano Japanese Gardens or pack your clubs and enjoy a round of golf on the quiet fairways of the Wellington Golf Club. Alternatively, head to the heart of town, put your feet up and enjoy a relaxed picnic in Cameron Park.

24

Wellington.

Wellington was the second European settlement west of the Blue Mountains, first established as a convict settlement in 1823.

The nearby Catombal Range has three distinctive peaks – Mounts Arthur, Wellesley and Duke.

The first recorded Diprotodon fossils were discovered in one of Wellington’s caves in the early 1830s by George Ranken and Major Thomas Mitchell.

VILLAGE

VIBES

For a taste of true blue Australia and a dose of good old country hospitality, a cold beverage or an event with heart, make sure you include a stop in our unique villages on your travel itinerary.

BALLIMORE

This quiet village offers an ideal escape from the hustle and bustle. Stop in for a leisurely meal or to stretch your legs before you continue your journey. MUST SEE: Stop by the well-known Hair of the Dog Inn for some classic country fare, conversation and a drink amongst the locals.

EUCHAREENA

Drop by a village where history and community run deep. Though small in size, Euchareena has its own unique claims to fame. The nearby heritage-listed mud brick Nubrygyn Inn was held up by the notorious bushranger Ben Hall only weeks before he met his untimely end. MUST SEE: A number of original buildings still stand dating back to the time the village was formed in 1834 including the Euchareena School, which is one of only a few ‘beehive buildings’ still standing in Australia.

EUMUNGERIE

Less than 30 minutes drive from Dubbo and you are surrounded by hectares of stunning Australian landscape in Eumungerie. MUST SEE: Avid bird watchers and naturalists are in their element in the nearby Goonoo National Park, where you can while away the day bushwalking, cycling and even horse riding on marked trails.

GEURIE

Situated right between Wellington and Dubbo along the Mitchell Highway is the quaint village of Geurie. Residents are delighted to play host to a collection of annual events that appeal to the equestrian 26

enthusiast, including pony club camps, camp drafts, picnic races and the popular rodeo. MUST SEE: Stop by Wise Park on the fifth Saturday of the month (when applicable) to browse the treasure trove of goodies to be found at the Geurie Lions Markets.

MUMBIL

The name ‘Mumbil’ comes from the Aboriginal word for black wattle which was once abundant in the area. This has inspired the name of Mumbil’s major annual event, The Black Wattle Fair. MUST SEE: Mumbil enjoys an envious location as the closest centre to the shores of the Region’s largest water sports playground – Lake Burrendong.

STUART TOWN

Formally known as Ironbark and referred to in the famous Banjo Paterson poem ‘The Man from Ironbark’, the village of Stuart Town was home to many hoping to find their fortune during the days of the NSW gold rush. MUST SEE: Locals take great pride in their heritage and history, celebrating the Man from Ironbark Festival every year.

WONGARBON

Enjoy spectacular views across the hills and the woodlands of the nature reserve and the laid back country lifestyle in Wongarbon, 15 minutes drive southeast of Dubbo. MUST SEE: Stop in for some good old fashioned pub grub at the local watering hole and enjoy a lively chat with the friendly patrons.
