Past Present Future | mural by Adnate. Supported by Nathan Peckham and Dylan Goolagong.

We acknowledge the Wiradjuri people who are the traditional custodians of the land on which we live, work and play. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging of the Wiradjuri Nation and thank them for their care of the land, water and sky and extend that respect to other Indigenous Australians.

The waterways of the Dubbo Region have always held a special significance to the Wiradjuri people of this area. The Macquarie River’s traditional name is Wambuul meaning ‘winding river’. The ebb and flow of the Wambuul through Dubbo and Wellington provided many ceremonial sites and gathering places for the local tribes. Visitors can still see evidence of one of the important gathering places at Terramungamine

Reserve near Dubbo where the rocks bear over 150 grooves and carvings created over many years as the Wiradjuri people shaped tools and spears (pictured left). The Dubbo Wiradjuri Garden (pictured right and below) offers the opportunity to further immerse the senses in Wiradjuri culture. This culturally significant and accessible meeting space for the community features large spans of open grass and accessible path systems representing the 3 key rivers of the area. Conversation is encouraged by the 2 large sandstone yarning circles, while native gardens with vegetation endemic to the area provides a serene atmosphere. The focal point of the garden space is the 50 metre rainbow serpent alive with a variety of native plant life.

Australia’s prehistoric past is within reach at the incredible Wellington Caves. Unearth the mysteries of megafauna that once roamed the land and marvel at the 15m tall crystal formation in the Cathedral Cave and the delicate dripping stalactites in the Gaden Cave.

Immerse yourself in the serenity of Wellington’s countryside at the 2,123 hectare Mount Arthur Reserve. There are 6 marked walking trails ranging from 30 minutes to a half day trek and vary in difficulty with all trails delivering spectacular views of the surrounding valley.

H I T T H E WAT E R Adventure beckons at Lake Burrendong or ‘The Dam’ as it’s known to locals. Spike the adrenaline in the warmer months and try your hand at water skiing, wakeboarding and biscuiting. Pack the reels, rods and tackle box and you may just take home the ‘big one’ with many different fish species to catch. More than just aquatic life, the dam is a haven for native Australian animals and there’s no better way to spot them than on a scenic hike. Or head out on the gently winding waterways of the Macquarie River, a favourite destination for kayakers and stand up paddleboarders.

John Oxley explored the Wellington Valley in 1817 and described it as ‘beautifully picturesque’.

Wellington was the second European settlement West of the Blue Mountains, first established as a convict settlement in 1823.

Discover a natural haven at the 164 hectare Burrendong Botanic Garden and Arboretum where you can wander through Fern Gully, a man-made rainforest situated beneath an enormous suspended, thatched canopy.

GARDENS AND GREENS Mingle with Mother Nature and enjoy the tranquillity of the Osawano Japanese Gardens or pack your clubs and enjoy a round of golf on the quiet fairways of the Wellington Golf Club. Alternatively, head to the heart of town, put your feet up and enjoy a relaxed picnic in Cameron Park.

The nearby Catombal Range has 3 distinctive peaks – Mounts Arthur, Wellesley and Duke.

The first recorded Diprotodon fossils were discovered in one of Wellington’s caves in the early 1830s by George Ranken and Major Thomas Mitchell.
