Jan 16 – A letter from the US Army to Mr. George Nicholson Harmon said the body his son, a Columbia Army Air Corps corporal, declared missing in 1944 during WWII was found in New Guinea. No details given. The family lived on a farm on Bear Creek pike at that time.

Jan 18 – Maury County picks first negro juror, Flynoid “Buddy” Young, a brick mason who lived on Bridge street was seated on Ernest Rieves liquor trial, found not guilty.

April 12 – Dr. William C Dunn, a native of Maury County and Nashville surgeon was chosen “Tennessee’s Outstanding Physician of the Year” at the 125 state medical convention.

April 12 – Kroger Corp announces plans for a new Kroger store with a 300 car parking lot located on the old Columbia Institute property on West 7th street.

April 15 – Two unidentified Negro women stage what was Columbia’s first Lunch counter “Sit-in” demonstration at F.W. Woolworth's on 7th Street, store manager, Fred Heathcock, closed the lunch counter, no arrests made.

April 18 Miss Suzie Morton 18, crowned Miss Maury County. She is daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Alton Morton of Spring Hill and she will reign over the Tennessee National Walking Horse Jubilee sponsored by the Jaycee’s.

April 27 – Columbia wins annexation law suit in state court.

April 28 – The old Court house items auctioned for a total of $900. Twenty 18 foot benches went to Cedar Hill Church of Christ for $5 each, jury chairs sold for $2 each. The highest bid was for the marble used as paneling around the court house wall, the brass grills went for $52 each.

May 2 – Gov. Buford Ellington announced he authorized $75,000 to build a dining hall at the Middle Tennessee 4-H club camp in Columbia.

May 4 – Four liquor stores to open in Maury County, including Sol Davis and Howard Neely’s stores in Mt Pleasant, Jimmy Gaines and one other in Columbia.

May 12 – “Mr. America” magazine featured a Maury County man, Albert F Warner 35, a manager at the Wargosa Manufacturing plant and father of two who began body building two years ago and has lost 35 pounds.

June 10 – Columbia City Council approves $975,000 budget.

June 22 – The US Weather Bureau honored Mr. Thomas S Fleming with a citation for his work as an official weather observer at Ashwood. Unofficial Ashwood Climatological Sub-Station records began in 1856 by Mr. C.F. Williams. The station became an official weather station in 1883. Mr. Fleming has served since 1939.

April 19 – A bomb blasts the home of Nashville Negro councilman and attorney, Z Alexander Looby. The attorney is the defense council for the Sit-in students in Nashville. He and his wife were asleep in the back of the house when the blast occurred, no injuries.

Aug 11 – Maury County School Board approved plans for new Columbia Central High School, new Baker Elementary School completed.

Aug 17 – The Columbia Housing authority purchased two tracts of land with a total of 32 acres on the old Phil Dyer farm for $35,000. Later the remaining 136 acres of the farm sold to the royal Order of Moose, Lodge #587 for $16,000.

Aug 31 – The Department of Labor report says $21 million out of $38 million in Maury County wages and salaries comes from manufacturing jobs.

Nov 26 – Olympic broad jump gold medal champion, Ralph Boston visited Carver-Smith school in Columbia and made a half time appearance at the championship game between Burt High of Clarksville and Carver-Smith. Burt High defeated the Yellow Jackets 32-8 at Fairview park for Middle Tennessee championship. Caldwell Wells was quarterback for Yellow jackets.

Jan 5 – Historic James K Polk home razed. The home once had President Andrew Jackson and President Martin Van Buren as guest over night on West 7th street. The home was purchased by Marshal Ledbetter and sold to Oakes and Nichols funeral home to be used as a parking lot.

Jan 6 – Baker Elementary school dedicated to honor J Rufus Baker, Maury County superintendent for 33 years.

Jan 9 – Mr. Andrew J Armstrong 98, one of the original founders of the ”Maury County Colored hospital” died. Mr. Armstrong was a school teacher, businessman, civic leader of the “colored community” and a member of the Mt Lebanon Missionary Baptist church in Columbia

Jan 13 – The Dixon farm and residence on 243 acres on Zion road has been purchased by Mrs. Leroy Epps of Kingstree, South Carolina. The site is one of the original Zion settlers. The historic home was built by slaves of Sam Armstrong and conveyed to Emily Dixon in 1879.

Jan 27 – New Williams Funeral Home on Mt Pleasant Pike has open house. First Williams Funeral home was on West 7th and School streets in 1930, former Eugene Anderson home. They moved to West 7th and Dunnington streets in 1952. Mt Pleasant pike site was part of former Joe Cheatham property.

June 23 – The organizational meeting of Jonathan Webster Association was held at the Cross Bridges Methodist church. Judge Hugh Lee Webster, Chairman of the meeting called to order the descendents of the Maury County pioneer. Mrs. Hint Frierson 92, was the oldest member attending.

June 17 – Fowler Culberson of 1107 Morningside Drive in Western Park found a yellowed parchment in a garbage can here entitled “First United States Patent” dated July 31, 1790 and signed by George Washington. The paper is believed to be the first US patent and was issued to Samuel Hopkins of Philadelphia, Pa. for making Potash and Pearl Ash with a new process and apparatus.

Across the road is another cave unexplored says the book.

Jan 16 – Two local pastors who were expelled from the Emmanuel Church of Christ have lost their rights to use the church says Judge John Templeton. The Columbia church is headed by Mrs. Virginia Lester and Leslie Spann who contended they own the property since it was paid for without the assistance of the Nashville Church Corporation. Mrs. Nina Mary Pierce, Bishop of the Emmanuel Churches of Christ controls 39 churches and receives tithes from each church. Mrs. Lester and Mrs. Spann were excommunicated by Bishop Pierce for being “mean spirited.”

Claude W Nichols wanted to buy Brookwood was later found guilty of murdering Anderson over the restaurant.

Jan 4 – The culmination of 6 years of work by Marise P Lightfoot and Evelyn B Shackleford of Mt Pleasant produced a 604 page book entitled “They Passed This Way” which contains information on 403 cemetery’s in Maury county.

Jan 11 – Hard work and cooperation has paid off for three Maury County brother’s. Joe, Allen and Clarence Ogilvie who started as share cropper’s and built their own farm of 648 acres with 120 head of cattle on Bear Creek pike 9 miles east. All three families share the returns from the land. They formed the cooperative in the 1930’s after saving $1000 to put down on 236 acres of eroded farm land and applied conservation practices to return the land to a productive condition with the help of the County agent, George A Newman who taught them good farming practices.

May 10 – 17 of Columbia’s 56 sanitation workers strike for higher wages and better working conditions. A picket line was set up at City hall. Bobby Ray Gray, Randolph Kinzer, and Willie Renfro were acting as spokesman for the group. They say $1.20 per hour regardless of years of service is unfair.

Oct 22 – The Maury County Historical Society has acquired an engraving of the Duck River Bridge at Columbia drawn by H. Mosler in 1862 with General Buell’s Federal Army crossing the bridge. The historical society secured the picture in a Antique shop in South Carolina, later published in Harper’s Weekly. The bridge located at the foot of East 6th street.

Oct 25 – Mrs. Elizabeth Pillow Porter, Maury County’s oldest citizen died, 105 at her home on North High street. The house was built in 1812 by Nathan Vaught for Samuel Craig. Mrs. Porter was born in the house, an old two story 21 room original double cedar log cabin home. She was the niece of Dr. Robert Pillow and known as “Miss Lizzie.”

Nov 6 – Over $30,000 dollars in cash found in “Miss Lizzies” home, Mrs. Elizabeth Pillow Porter, 105. The articles of value will go to the Tennessee antiquity society according to her will. Antiques and other personal items will be auctioned off. She had no living relatives. All proceeds go to the charity’s of Maury County including the Library, King’s Daughter’s, Maury County hospital and churches. The total estate valued at $50,000. Among the items to be auctioned off will be a 1800 Empire Veneer bed. Miss Lizzie was a graduate of the Athenaeum, married twice, divorced twice. Her first husband was Mr. Woodcoff and her 2nd husband was Dr. B. Bawdeem.

April 7 – A wreaking crew razes the home of Miss Elizabeth Pillow Porter “Miss Lizzie”. They uncovered 150 year old cedar logs believed erected in 1816 by Nathan Vaught.

April 21 – Monsanto donates 50,000 lb phosphate rock to Maury County Park for display. The 25 ton rock is believed to be the largest piece of phosphate ever taken from Maury County and can be viewed at the park entrance.

March 27 – Some 200 students and 100 parents of Hay Long High School refused to attend classes and appeared on campus to protest the suspension of senior, David Bishop. The group marched into the principals office chanting “We want David back.” A petition with 700 names protesting the suspension was presented. Bishop was suspended after he violated probation and took some uniforms from Franklin High School basketball team. The school board voted to uphold the suspension.

Originally called “Mulberry Hill” and built by Mr. Dale in 1832, later owned by Matthew W Cooper and Colonel Duncan Cooper who was convicted and pardoned for the murder of Senator Edward Carmack.
