OVERVIEW Located in the State of California, Los Angeles is the second most populous city of the United States. Founded in 1781 by Native Americans and Spanish colonizers as a village called Nuestra Señora la Reina de Los Angeles, it was a Mexican territory until 1848, when it was conquered by the Americans. Only from the 20th Century on the city started to attract stars and fame aspiring people, getting into the popular imagery as the city of glamour and famous people, such as it is known today for headquartering Hollywood, hosting international events as the Academy Awards and the Grammy Award, besides being

DUFRY TRAVEL TIPS LOS ANGELES

The peak season takes place from June to August, but to avoid a crowded city and high prices, another great season to go is from March to May, during Spring. The ideal period to stay, getting to know and fully enjoy the city is at least 4 days, but as many travelers sometimes have only a week to spare and want to visit as many places as possible in California, it is advisable to take at least 2 days to visit the main touristic attractions of the city!

CLIMATE Los Angeles has a subtropical Mediterranean climate, with semi arid deserts, mild Winters and pretty hot Summers. August and

It is also possible to use the TAP, as explained in the topic about buses, and move around with the card. But the greatest advantage of this transportation is: not facing any traffic! The train service is provided by the Amtrack company, with interstate trips, in approximately 50 states. It is one of the options to reach Los Angeles, where the main local station is Union Station, in Downtown.

PLANE The main airport of L.A. is the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). In case you reach the city by plane, if you do not have a transfer, there are several options to leave LAX for the city: the airport offers a free shuttle to the closest subway station (Metro Green

WHERE TO STAY The city offers many accommodation options, from the traditional American motels, small and comfortable hotels, boutique hotels to theatrical, five star hotels such as the Four Seasons Beverly Wilshire, where “Pretty Woman” was filmed. One of the key factors in choosing your hotel will, besides price, depend on your form of transport around the city: if it is by a rental car, always opt for hotels which offer a parking lot, or if you are to move around the city by shuttle or public transport,

DINING OUT Los Angeles is one of the cities that offer the biggest variety of cuisines and restaurants you can imagine... From stalls on the streets, Mexican food, Korean food to the famous 5 star restaurants. Californian cuisine uses a lot of organic ingredients (everything is super fresh!), but the food trucks are the main attraction, revealing delicious choices... The most famous is chef Roy Choi’s, a Mexican food truck (with Korean flavors): Kogi BBQ. In Los Angeles you can have great gastronomic experiences in the restaurants of the chefs: Wolfgang Puck, Thomas Keller and Nobu Matsuhisa... It is worth trying!

International restaurants are easily found around the city, and in the coastal region the focus lies upon seafood and fish based dishes, crab being the star. To try a little of every delicious food L.A. has to offer, it is advisable to go to The Original Farmers Market or to the Grand Central Public Market: these are markets with many stalls serving many types of food from different places of the world! Two Los Angeles staples are fast foods: Philippe’s French dip, a sandwich made out of roast beef (or other meat) with roll dipped in the beef juice; and Pink’s Chili dog, that is a classic hot dog with a layer of chili on top.

There, you can find many stalls and stores with everything you can imagine in very affordable prices, but there is no way to assure that the designer brand products are original...

Some more affordable malls are: The Grove and the Beverly Center, in Beverly Hills; and the Santa Monica Place, in Santa Monica, next to the pier. Great streets for shopping are: Robertson Boulevard (in Beverlywood), Ventura Boulevard (in The Valley), South Lake Avenue
