Viajar não é só dar um tempo do turbilhão de afazeres, mas uma das ferramentas mais eficazes de aprendizado, em todos os sentidos. IN AN INCREASINGLY HURRIED WORLD, taking a break seems to have become as fundamental as breathing. The more city life gets crazy, the greater the need is to establish mental rest mechanisms. Whoever has tasted the experience of boarding a plane and then landing in a completely different place knows there is nothing better than a good trip to recharge one’s batteries. During a recent interview to the Trip FM radio show, Sidarta Ribeiro, one of the most respected neuroscientists in Brazil and abroad, told that new studies have shown that there are three things we can do for a good brain function: physical exercise, a balanced diet and constant contact with what is new.

QUERO SER AMYR KLINK Desbravar mares e destinos inóspitos, dividir espaço com animais selvagens e viver dias dentro de um barco. Se você já quis se aventurar como Amyr Klink, um roteiro de viagem para a Antártica criado por ele, em parceria com a agência de turismo Latitudes, promete essas e outras experiências. O passeio dura 16 dias, sendo 12 deles a bordo do barco Paratii 2, o mesmo que Amyr usou em sua famosa expedição também à Antártica, em 1990. Na programação, o viajante divide tarefas com a tripulação, caminha por praias desertas e geleiras, escala montanhas e mergulha em meio a icebergs. Tudo indicado pelo próprio Amyr, embora ele não acompanhe a viagem. O roteiro começa a valer em janeiro de 2014. A partir de US$ 30 mil por pessoa, sem a parte aérea.

I WANNA BE AMYR KLINK – Braving seas and inhospitable destinations, share spaces with wild animals and spend days on a boat. If you ever wanted to venture the ocean like Amyr Klink, a trip to Antarctica he created in partnership with tourism agency Latitudes promises these and other experiences.

The tour lasts 16 days, 12 of them aboard the Paratii 2, the same boat used by Klink in his famous 1990 expedition to Antarctica. In the program, travelers share tasks with the crew, walk on deserted beaches and glaciers, climb mountains and swim among icebergs. Aberto ao público oficialmente neste ano, o novo cartão-postal da cidade impressiona também pelos números: tem 310 metros de altura, 44 elevadores, custou 740 milhões de euros e envolveu 1.300 pessoas em sua construção. Do mirante é possível observar Londres em 360 graus, com até 64 quilômetros de visibilidade. Ao todo são 72 andares, ocupados por escritórios, apartamentos e restaurantes. Entre eles, os recéminaugurados Aqua London, com foco na gastronomia britânica, o chinês Hutong, sucesso em Hong Kong, e o Oblix, de cozinha internacional. Em breve, o hotel Shangri-La abre na torre uma unidade com 200 apartamentos de luxo.

“In 2004, I went to Peru to record a food show for Brazilian cable channel GNT. On a visit to the Chinchero market, I was blown away with the textiles made there, but did not have the time to buy anything. To my surprise, the day I left, a Peruvian woman who had accompanied us during the trip gave me a piece of fabric. She was very emotional and told me to take it as a souvenir.

Returning to Rio, I wanted to immortalize that moment and turned the cloth into two cushions. They were so special that even my dog ended enjoying it. Now he does not leave them!”

Arte também se vê pelas ruas e, para conhecer a obra de artistas locais, como Jeff Wall e Robert Davidson, a dica é fazer um tour pela completa Vancouver Art Gallery Gallery. À noite, a ferveção acontece nas redondezas das ruas Hamilton e Mainland, em hot spots como o Opus Bar Bar, ponto de encontro de gente interessante com boa música lounge. A casa, por sinal, fica dentro do hotel-butique da vez, o Opus Hotel, Hotel eleito este ano um dos melhores do mundo pela revista Condé Nast Traveler.

THE LONG WALKWAYS are an invitation for a peaceful stroll to watch the contrasts among the brick houses, the skyscrapers, the children playing in the Cooper’s and Helmcken parks and the cyclists who pedal by the Seawall. This is Yaletown. Located on Downtown Vancouver’s peninsula, this old neighborhood became, after a revitalization, one of the most cool districts, full of gyms, yoga studios and funky stores. At Global Atomic, the highlights are the clothes and modern accessories, while Marimekko offers a smart mix of fashion and design objects. While shopping, it is worth stopping at the Urban Fare market for a nice coffee or quick snack. Art is also seen in the streets, and to know local artists such as Jeff Wall and Robert Davidson the trick is to do a full tour at the Vancouver Art Gallery. At night, the magic happens around Hamilton and Mainland streets. One hot spot is the Opus Bar, with good music and interesting people.

The bar, by the way, is located inside the Opus, a boutique hotel elected this year as one of the world’s best by Condé Nast Traveler magazine.

I went, but I was afraid that the plane would crash just because I had changed my habits. And what happened? The movie is based on the story of a real group who, for fun, decide to steal the mansions of the rich and famous. Emma plays Nicki, one of the leaders, obsessed with the lifestyle of reality-show stars. “It was not the character that attracted me, but the possibility of working with Sofia. All the people I know that had worked with her told me that she is a director who really understands the work of actors.”

Emma takes her profession quite seriously. When she was five years old, her parents got divorced and she went to live with her mother and brother in Oxford, England.

She begged her mother to let her study dramatic arts. “My mum imposed only two conditions: that I was good in school and that I took my work seriously.” When the tests for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (the first film of the saga) happened, Emma was one of the best students at the Stagecoach Theatre Arts. At the age of nine, she won the role of Hermione, one of the characters that divide the scene with the protagonist, played by Daniel Radcliffe.

“For me it was an adventure that I shared with friends, a world to which we would return almost every year. I knew that the books and movies appealed to the public, but I had no idea what the stories, the characters and our work meant to them.” The success of the series, which yielded eight films, made the girl a teen star. And today, at 23 years old, Emma does not seem to have a very clear notion of her position as a pop idol (read box).

ALÉM DE HOGWARTS Como qualquer pessoa que cresceu diante das câmeras, a atriz teve de se libertar da imagem criada pela personagem que a tornou famosa. “Quando acabamos de filmar, senti uma mistura de tristeza por deixar aquele período para trás e ansiedade por começar uma nova etapa. Precisava sinalizar que não era mais aquela garotinha. Cortar o cabelo curto foi uma forma radical de passar a mensagem. Agora as pessoas me enxergam e me tratam diferente.”

Depois de Harry Potter, Emma decidiu estudar inglês e literatura na prestigiada Universidade Brown, nos Estados Unidos – “faltam só três matérias para eu me formar!” –, e fez vários outros filmes o mais distante possível do mundo de Hogwarts: uma participação em Sete dias com Marilyn (2011), o cult As vantagens de ser invisível (2012), a comédia É o fim (2013) e, agora, Bling Ring. E viajou muito.

Tanto que coleciona histórias divertidas, como a que aconteceu em uma das últimas passagens pelo aeroporto JFK, em Nova York.

O agente de imigração olhou para ela de alto a baixo e perguntou: “Onde estão seus pais?”. Ele não queria acreditar que a atriz era maior de idade. “Eu apontava no passaporte: olhe, olhe, tenho 22 anos!” Filha de britânicos, nascida em Paris, Emma mantém conexões espalhadas pelo mundo. “Tenho amigos em Londres, em Oxford, em Nova York e em Los Angeles, e família em Paris. Você divide a maior parte de seu tempo entre Estados Unidos e GrãBretanha. E ainda mantém família em Paris. Além disso, viaja bastante por causa do trabalho. Qual a sua cidade favorita no mundo? Paris, aonde vou pelo menos duas vezes por ano. Nasci na cidade, então vários sentimentos se misturam quando estou lá. Fico alegre, nostálgica, inspirada... Gosto de andar pelas margens do Sena, de sentar no Café de Flore. Nunca tenho planos, mas é sempre uma viagem emocional e prazerosa.

She also traveled extensively, collecting fun stories like the one that happened at the JFK Airport in New York.

The Immigration officer looked at her and asked, “Where are your parents?” He could not believe the actress age.

“I pointed to the passport and said, ‘Look, look, I’m 22!’”

Born in Paris, with British parents, Emma keeps connections around the world. “I have friends in London, Oxford, New York and Los Angeles, and family in Paris.

So I’m always on the road.” Here, the actress tells how she feels when traveling the globe.

You divide your time between the United States and Great Britain and have family in Paris. Moreover, travels a lot because of your work. What is your favorite city in the world? Paris, where I go at least twice a year. I was born there, so I have mixed feelings when I am in the city; I feel cheerful, nostalgic, inspired... I like to walk along the banks of the Seine and to sit at the Café de Flore. I never have plans, but it is always an emotional and enjoyable journey.

Have you ever had a weird experience on the road? I will not say the place, just what happened in a tropical and exotic destination. I was crazy for a good season at the beach, but I got there in the middle of a storm that lasted the entire season. And the mosquitoes? I do not even want to remember... A disaster!

O trabalho como atriz, segundo ela, foi um incentivo para cuidar da vaidade. “Se não tivesse escolhido essa carreira, provavelmente ainda estaria andando de jeans, camiseta e tênis.” Mas a atriz aprendeu bem – e rápido: em 2010, ao lado de seu irmão caçula, Alex, lá estava ela na campanha primaveraverão da Burberry, estreando como garota-propaganda. A Lancôme rapidamente pegou a dica: contratou a moça como rosto oficial da marca em 2011. “Foi uma honra”, conta.

Segundo ela, o papel em Bling Ring – A gangue de Hollywood, de Sofia Coppola, reforçou ainda mais a impressão de que é muito fácil ser atraído para o vazio do consumo, como aconteceu com sua personagem. Para viver Nicki, a menina de classe média obcecada com a vida dos famosos, Emma passou por uma transformação radical. “Mudei a cor do cabelo, das sobrancelhas e tive que fazer bronzeamento”, lembra, rindo. “Coisas que nunca pensaria em fazer.” Ou usar: vestidos superjustos, botas UGG, saltos altíssimos… “Mas por isso mesmo foi divertido. Me lembro dos meus amigos quando me viram na capa de uma revista caracterizada como Nicki. Eles acharam que eu tinha enlouquecido!”

At the backstage, Emma worked as a consultant at People Tree, which makes clothes and accessories from organic materials and sustainable practices. “I found the project gorgeous and got excited about the possibility of developing a young line for the brand.” After two years, she decided to give fashion design a pause. “I do not want to be seen as a fashion icon. I like fashion and pretty things, but my job is as an actress.”

According to her, The Bling Ring further reinforced the conviction that it is very easy to be attracted to the emptiness of consumption, as happened with her character. To play Nicki, a middle-class girl obsessed with the lives of the famous, Emma had a radical transformation. “I changed my hair color, painted my eyebrows and had to do tanning,” she recalls, laughing. “Things I had never thought of doing.” Or wearing: tight dresses, UGG boots, high heels.... “But it was fun. I remember when my friends saw me at the cover of a magazine as Nicki. They thought I had gone mad .”

Minha madrasta não gostou porque achava que eu era jovem demais para usar perfume. Deve ser por isso que, até hoje, levo sempre um vidrinho aonde quer que eu vá.

O que mais você sempre leva na mala? Hidratante e blush. Sou muito pálida, saio dos voos parecendo um fantasma. E velas perfumadas, meu maior luxo. Meu ursinho de pelúcia, Wilfred, também anda comigo desde criança e nunca viajei sem ele.

And what was the most remarkable trip you have ever taken? A family vacation in Provence. I remember we visited a famous perfume shop and in the end, my dad let me choose a bottle. My stepmother did not like it because she thought I was too young to use perfume. That is why, even today, I always take one bottle wherever I go.

Even on a plane? Especially on a plane.

What else do you always take in your handbag?

Moisturizer and blush. I am very pale and I leave the flights looking like a ghost. And I carry scented candles, my greatest luxury. And my teddy bear, Wilfred, who has been with me since I was a child; I never travel without him.

HÁ ALGUM TEMPO COLECIONO dicas de amigos que visitaram o Uruguai recentemente. Todos voltaram encantados pelo país que, embora ainda tão fiel às tradições, vem promovendo mudanças como uma política de drogas mais liberal, a legalização do aborto e do casamento gay. Além disso, tem a fama de produzir ótimos vinhos e de ser um lugar bastante seguro e tranquilo.

Com cinco dias livres, decidi passar longe de Montevidéu e enveredar por um pedaço ainda pouco falado do Uruguai – e que nada se parece com a badalada Punta del Este. A região de Colônia do Sacramento, a 180 quilômetros de Montevidéu e apenas a 100 quilômetros de Buenos Aires, era tudo que eu queria: fama de boa comida, história rica, gente acolhedora e natureza exuberante.

Esse mix me atraiu. Quer alguns motivos para fazer o mesmo?

COMPRAS E RIO DA PRATA Como Colônia do Sacramento é mais perto de Buenos Aires do que de Montevidéu, desembarquei na capital argentina e passei um dia por lá, com direito a comprinhas e cafés em Palermo e uma volta na feira de antiguidades de San Telmo. Aproveitei também para jantar no restaurante febre do momento, o Elena, no Four Seasons, na Recoleta. No dia seguinte cedo, peguei o Buquebus em Puerto Madero, para atravessar o rio da Prata e chegar ao Uruguai. Conforme essa grande balsa se afastava da terra, a vista de Buenos Aires ia ficando cada vez mais bonita. Me acomodei ali e, durante pouco mais de uma hora, olhei para o horizonte sem pensar em nada.

FOR SOME TIME, friends of mine that had recently visited Uruguay were offering me their travel tips. All those friends had come back enchanted with a country that, although still so true to its traditions, had been adopting changes such as taking a more liberal drug policy and legalizing abortion and same-sex marriage.

On top of that, Uruguay was said to make great wines and be a very safe and quiet place.

With five days off, I decided to go away from Montevideo and trendy Punta del Este and go to a little-known part of the Uruguayan countryside.

Colonia del Sacramento, 180km from Montevideo and 100km from Buenos Aires, had everything I wanted: good food, rich history, friendly people and gorgeous nature. This mix attracted me. Do you want some reasons to do the same?

SHOPPING AND THE RIVER PLATE Because Colonia del Sacramento is closer to Buenos Aires than to Montevideo, I landed in the capital of Argentina and spent one day there. I went shopping in Palermo and for a little walk in San Telmo. I also had dinner at a restaurant that is in the spotlight, Elena, at the Four Seasons. Early next day, I took the Buquebus in Puerto Madero and crossed to Uruguay. As that

PATRIMÔNIO CULTURAL E NATURAL A chegada a Colônia do Sacramento é surpreendente. A cidade é uma mistura de Paraty com alguma cidadezinha do norte da Itália, onde as pessoas andam sossegadas com suas garrafinhas térmicas e cuias de mate. Patrimônio Cultural e Natural Mundial tombado pela Unesco em 1995, esse lugar foi fundado por portugueses e espanhóis em 1680 e os traços da arquitetura e das batalhas entre esses dois povos estão lá até hoje – e bem conservados. Mas o mais legal são as ruas onde você pode andar despreocupadamente e, do nada, encontrar uma portinha que esconde um restaurante típico e gostoso. Na sugestiva Calle de Los Suspiros isso aconteceu comigo. Ali, descobri o Buen Suspiro, onde queijos e vinhos, além dos tradicionais chivitos, sanduíches típicos feitos de filé-mignon, abrem o apetite. Outros tantos como esse enfeitam as ruas, assim como cafés, livrarias e carros antigos. Tudo perfeitamente equilibrado. Ficaria ali, andando sem rumo e sem me preocupar com o tempo, por uns dias. Mas sabia que ia encontrar algo mais estrada adentro.

CULTURAL AND NATURAL HERITAGE The arrival at Colonia del Sacramento was amazing.

The town is a mixture of Paraty with some small place in Italy, with people walking with their thermos and yerba mate gourds. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995, Colonia is a 17th-century town that has many cafes and typical, yummy restaurants. One of them is the Buen Suspiro, where cheese, wine and the traditional chivitos (beef tenderloin sandwiches) whet your appetite. There are also bookshops, and antique cars line the streets. I could have stayed there for a few days, walking without a care, but I knew I’d find something else on the road ahead.

por by Mauro Marcelo Alves* Reconversão. Essa é a palavra mais importante no mundo do vinho uruguaio. Iniciada há mais de 20 anos, tratou de corrigir o pecado original de seus vinhedos, boa parte deles de cultivo arcaico e com uvas impróprias para bebida.

Técnicos franceses visitaram o país, um grupo de produtores locais modernizou as práticas agrícolas e os vinhos foram reconvertidos à qualidade.

Como provam os produtos da Finca Narbona. O pinot noir 2012, uva de difícil cultura, encontrou no trabalho da jovem enóloga Valeria Chiola uma fina expressão aromática, lembrando frutas vermelhas, e gosto com taninos e acidez em equilíbrio. E seu Luz de Luna 2011, com a uva símbolo do país, tannat, mostra vigor no aroma e corpo, com sugestão de frutas negras, especiarias e cedro.

Conversion. This is the most important word in the world of Uruguayan wineries. It started 20 years ago to correct the original sins of a great part of their vineyards: archaic cultivation and hybrid grapes. Some French technicians visited the country, and a group of local producers agreed to modernize their agricultural and enological practices by using only wine grapes. The wines were then “converted” to quality.

As an evidence of that, we have the products from Finca Narbona. The 2012 Pinot Noir (a famously difficult grape) has found in the work of young enologist Valeria Chiola a refined aromatic expression, reminiscent of fresh berries, with well-balanced tannins and acidity. And the 2011 Luz de Luna, made with Tannat (the most representative Uruguayan grape) shows strength in its dark-berry, spice and cedar aroma and body.

UVAS COM HISTÓRIA A 80 quilômetros de Colônia está Carmelo, para onde seguimos de carro, acompanhando uma paisagem verde e azul, os pampas e o céu.

Formado por uma população de 22 mil habitantes, a maioria descendente de colonos italianos, o vilarejo, banhado pelas águas do rio da Prata, tem praias de água doce que fazem sucesso no verão. Mas o charme são mesmo as vinícolas, tão antigas quanto a povoação da região, muitas delas com bodegas próprias. É dali que tem saído uma produção de vinhos respeitável a ponto de deixar os argentinos enciumados. Muitos deles, empresários, resolveram investir nessa onda do país vizinho, numa espécie de retomada do vinho uruguaio – e também num tipo de turismo que tem atraído gente de todo o mundo: o das bodegas-butique. Visitei duas delas, a Campo Tinto e a Finca Narbona. As duas oferecem hospedagem rústica, mas altamente confortável. A Campo Tinto, além dos quartos comuns, tem uma barraca de camping de luxo, com banheira e tudo, no meio da vinícola. Mas a Narbona me encantou, sobretudo, pelo vinho, dos mais saborosos que já provei, um tannat 2011 chamado Luz de Luna.

Depois fui descobrir que ele anda sendo premiado e que a responsável por isso é Valeria Chiola, uma uruguaia de 28 anos (leia boxe).

GRAPES WITH HISTORY Some 80km from Colonia is Carmelo, where we went by car, looking at a green and blue landscape: the pampas and the sky. With 22,000 inhabitants, mostly descending from Italians, the village has fresh water beaches that are very popular in the summer.

But the local charm lies really in the wineries, as old as the settlements. Production of wines in Carmelo is making Argentinians jealous, and many of them decided to invest there. Boutique wineries are leading to a renewal of interest in Uruguayan wine – and to a type of tourism that has attracted people from all over the world. I visited two of these wineries, Campo Tinto and Finca Narbona. Both offer rustic but comfortable lodging. Campo Tinto, besides the common rooms, has a luxury tent, with bathtub, in the middle of the winery.

And Narbona enchanted me, especially for the tastiest wine I’ve ever had, the 2011 Luz de Luna Tannat. This Tannat has won awards, and the responsible for it is Valeria Chiola, a 28-year-old Uruguayan (read box).

PESCA, CAVALGADA E ESTRELAS Perto das vinícolas fica uma das instalações mais requintadas da região, o Four Seasons Carmelo, que me lembrou os lodges que conheci na África do Sul anos atrás. As cabanas, de dois andares, ficam espalhadas em um terreno de 440 mil metros quadrados, com vista para o rio da Prata, onde, no verão, dá praia, e das boas. Como era fim de inverno, fiquei com o conforto dos quartos, com o spa charmoso e com a lareira gigante do hall, onde pude experimentar mais dos vinhos locais. E me aventurei a fazer uma cavalgada guiada por Gustavo Rodríguez, que trabalha em um condomínio próximo.

Por US$ 45, você monta num cavalo robusto e passeia por um bosque de pinheiros que acaba quando uma lagoa enorme aparece.

Além desse passeio, pode-se sair de barco pelo rio, onde, dizem os locais, vê-se um dos pores do sol mais bonitos do planeta. Ou ainda pescar e observar as estrelas à noite. Tudo com um piquenique autêntico: vinho, queijos e chivitos. Como para mim a aventura de sair de uma bodega e fazer uma cavalgada já foi forte demais, optei por contemplar a vista, os ares e as pessoas acolhedoras desse povoado que hoje, além da agricultura como principal meio de vida, se dedica ao turismo e à produção de tannats, pinot noirs...

FISHING, HORSE RIDING AND STARS Near the wineries is one of the finest hotel facilities in the region, the Four Seasons Carmelo, which reminded me of the lodges I got to know in South Africa years ago. The two-storey cabins are scattered on a 440-square-meter plot, with a view to the River Plate. Because it was the end of the winter, I chose a room instead, and in the hall (with its giant fireplace) I could try some more of the local wines.

I ventured to make a horse ride led by Gustavo Rodríguez, who works in a condo nearby. For US$45, you ride a robust horse and wander through pine woods that end when a huge pond appears. In addition to this tour, you can go on a boat, where you can see one of the most beautiful sunsets in the planet. Or go fishing and watch the stars at night. All of that with an authentic picnic: wine, cheese and chivitos.

For me, the adventure of going out of the bodega for a horse ride had been overwhelming enough, and I just chose to watch the view, the sky and the welcoming people. (Today, besides farming, their primary livelihood, the villagers are employed by the tourism industry and the wineries.)

Everywhere there are green areas, which are usually crowded when it is not cold. In addition, Stockholmers are friendly and only tend to get irritated with the question, “Do you speak English?” Of course they do!

This mixture makes Stockholm one of the best places in the world to live. And if you do not want to live there, you will find at least good reasons to spend your next holidays in the city.

FROM ABBA TO THE VIKINGS Stockholm has over 100 museums, and some of them are far away from monotony. One example is the newly-opened ABBA, dedicated to the most famous and beloved Swedish band – here, it is worth saying that the country has already launched numerous talents into the music scene (read box).

The museum is interactive and allow visitors to record a song in a fake studio or play with the extravagant and colorful costumes.

Just as interesting is the Skansen, an open-air museum that presents the history of Sweden in a playful manner. Focused on the Nordic tradition, it boasts an ancient village and even a zoo. Another history museum worth visiting is the Vasa, where a

Já para quem se interessa por arte contemporânea, a dica é o museu Fotografiska, que organiza ótimas exposições – até o fim de novembro fica em cartaz This Must Be The Place, com imagens do fotógrafo sul-africano Pieter Hugo. Aproveite para conhecer o bistrô no topo do edifício, onde a cozinha é pilotada pelos chefs Paul Svensson e Peter Jälksäter, do Swedish National Culinary Team, grupo que reúne os talentos da gastronomia local. Essa equação tem atraído cada vez mais pessoas para roteiros de bicicleta mundo afora. E, geralmente, quem viaja pela primeira vez repete a experiência sempre que possível. É o caso da investidora Bianka van Hoegaerden. Em 1990, ela se aventurou pela Provence em um grupo de 24 pessoas do mundo inteiro. O roteiro foi organizado por uma agência especializada, que se encarregava de fazer o transporte das malas e o check-in nos hotéis. “A gente só tinha que se concentrar em pedalar, aproveitar os restaurantes, os vinhos e a paisagem deslumbrante”, lembra Bianka, que percorria cerca de 70 quilômetros por dia de bicicleta. A viagem foi tão marcante que de lá para cá ela fez mais 13 roteiros do tipo. E até incluiu os filhos na jogada. “Quando eram pequenos, fizemos duas viagens de bike, para a Bretanha e a Normandia. Eles pedalavam um pouquinho e depois subiam na van com outras crianças. Foi bom porque todo mundo aproveitou.” Há três anos, Bianka começou a praticar ciclismo duas vezes por semana. Hoje, sempre que vai viajar de bike, ela faz um treino mais puxado, cerca de três meses antes. “No início não me preocupava em me preparar, porque era mais jovem e aguen-

That’s an equation that has attracted more people to cycling trips around the world. And usually, those traveling as a first experience will repeat it later whenever possible.

It is what investor Bianka van Hoegaerden did. In 1990, she ventured through Provence with a group of 24 people. The program was organized by an agency that was in charge of transporting luggage and checking in at hotels. “We just had to focus on cycling and enjoy the restaurants, wines and views,” recalls van Hoegaerden, who pedaled around 70 km a day on that tour.

The trip was so striking that since then she has made other 13 bike trips and even included her sons. “When they were small, we did two trips cycling around Brittany and Normandy. They used to pedal a bit and then climb into the accompanying van. It was good because everyone was able to enjoy the experience.” Three years ago, Van Hoegaerden started cycling twice a week. Today, whenever she travels by bike, she starts a more focused workout three months in advance. “At first I did not care to prepare myself physically, because I was younger and

Paulo de Tarso, criador da agência de viagens Sampa Bikers, especializada em turismo de bicicleta, acha fundamental que o candidato a um roteiro do estilo tenha bom preparo físico. “Quem só pedala no fim de semana, na ciclofaixa, não aguenta o ritmo e acaba não conseguindo aproveitar. Sempre alerto para essa questão. Já vi muita gente passar a viagem na van porque não conseguiu acompanhar”, diz.

Arquiteto de formação, Paulo largou o emprego há 16 anos para se dedicar à sua grande paixão: a bicicleta. A Sampa Bikers começou como um grupo de ciclistas em 1993 e, quatro anos depois, passou a operar como agência de cicloturismo. “A bicicleta permite uma outra relação com o lugar: você vê tudo, sente o cheiro das coisas, o vento na cara. Mas, para ser prazeroso, a pessoa precisa estar acostumada a pedalar. Senão, pode se machucar”, diz.

Adriana Kroehne, diretora da agência Bike Expedition, garante que saber pilotar a magrela é suficiente para roteiros planos, como os que organiza na Holanda, no Vale do Loire e

In São Paulo City, Paulo de Tarso created the Sampa Bikers travel agency, specialized in cycle tourism. He believes that any candidate to a trip has to be used to workouts.

“Who just rides on weekends cannot stand the pace and will not enjoy the trip”, he says. “I’ve seen many people spending the trip in the van because they could not follow the others.” Paulo is an architect by training, but quitted that job 16 years ago to devote himself to his passion: cycling.

Sampa Bikers started as a group of cyclist friends in 1993 and, four years later, began to operate as a cycling agency. “Bikes allow a different relationship with places: you see everything, smell things, feel the wind in your face,” says Paulo de Tarso. “But to enjoy it, you need to be used to pedal. Otherwise, you can get hurt.” Adriana Kroehne, Director at the Bike Expedition agency, guarantees that knowing

ESPÍRITO LIVRE Quando fez sua primeira viagem de bicicleta, em 2011, para o Vale do Loire, a administradora Tatiana Benitez não praticava o esporte e conseguiu aguentar o ritmo sem grandes problemas. A experiência foi tão boa que ela incorporou a bike à rotina e hoje treina três vezes por semana na USP, em São Paulo. Tatiana fez todo o trajeto na companhia do namorado, sem grupo nem guia, e usou bicicletas alugadas pela agência que organizou a viagem. Um mapa informava qual seria o percurso do dia e indicava os locais que poderiam interessar para uma parada. “Passamos por castelos, florestas, museus. Com a bicicleta, o tempo passa de forma diferente: a gente pode ir mais rápido ou devagar, conforme o nosso interesse.” Neste ano, ela repetiu a experiência, mas dessa vez não foi só passear: participou da mais tradicional competição de ciclismo do mundo, o Tour de France. “Apesar de as experiências serem tão diferentes, nas duas viagens pude explorar os meus limites e conhecer novos lugares”, diz.

Benitez was accompanied by her boyfriend, without a guide, and they rented the bikes from a travel agency.

A map informed what the daily route would be and indicated places where it might be interesting to stop.

“We went through castles, forests, museums. With a bike, time passes differently: we can go faster or slower, at our convenience.” The experience was so good that she incorporated cycling into her routine and now trains three times a week at the USP campus in São Paulo City. This year , Benitez repeated the experience, but not just traveling: she took part in the Tour of France, the world’s most traditional cycling competition. “Although

Para a consultora Malu Moura Andrade, que já fez cinco viagens internacionais de bicicleta, equilibrar o esforço físico com pequenos luxos, como bons restaurantes e hotéis, torna o passeio ainda mais agradável. “O corpo cansa, mas logo tem a recompensa de um belo almoço e uma cama confortável, além dos lugares exuberantes”, conta.

Mas nem para todos esse tipo de mimo é relevante.

O jornalista Arthur Simões, que passou três anos rodando o mundo – 46 países em cinco continentes – em cima de uma bicicleta, acha que entrar em contato com a cultura é mais importante que o conforto do turismo tradicional. Por isso, optou por se hospedar em casas de família e, sempre que possível, fazia as refeições em restaurantes simples. “A bicicleta era um ótimo cartão de visita.

DAS MEMÓRIAS DE INFÂNCIA do empresário francês Olivier Baussan, uma das mais marcantes é a do cheiro que sentia nos campos de lavanda e alecrim a caminho do colégio.

Nascido na Provence, no sudeste da França, ele cresceu com a certeza de que o aroma local era tão especial que merecia ser reproduzido. Em 1976, aos 23 anos e então estudante de literatura, decidiu levar a ideia adiante. Comprou um alambique usado, colheu mudas de plantas e começou a fazer, na garagem de casa, alguns experimentos. O primeiro resultou em um óleo essencial de alecrim para ser usado em rituais diários de beleza.

A invenção o inspirou a produzir sabonetes, loções, cremes e outras essências de raízes provençais, com ingredientes como verbena, lavanda, rosas e flor de cerejeira. Surgia assim a L’Occitane en Provence, multinacional de cosméticos presente hoje em 85 países – e também nas lojas Dufry.

Embora a ideia inicial fosse explorar somente a Provence, Baussan direcionou seu olhar apurado para outros destinos.

No início dos anos 80, durante viagem de férias em Burkina Fasso, na África, ele se encantou com uma manteiga vendida em feiras livres por mulheres que tinham as mãos e os antebraços bem hidratados, diferentemente do restante do corpo.

Intrigado, foi investigar o porquê. Descobriu que essas mesmas mulheres eram as responsáveis pela confecção da tal manteiga, obtida por meio de sementes de carité cultivadas no local e trituradas manualmente. Percebeu o alto poder nutritivo do ingrediente e decidiu importá-lo para criar uma coleção exclusiva. O primeiro item foi um sabonete em barra de 100 gramas, e logo a linha de produtos foi ampliada, até chegar ao creme para as mãos, que virou hit. “A cada 5 segundos alguém no mundo compra um creme para as mãos feito de carité. É o mais vendido de todos”, diz Laura Barros, diretora de marca do Grupo L’Occitane no Brasil.

A fórmula da L’Occitane passou a ser, então, misturar ingredientes e perfumes típicos em pequenos frascos com embalagens de estilo vintage, desenhadas até hoje pelo próprio Baussan a partir de moldes de gesso. A escolha do conteúdo, no entanto, é rigorosa. “Só incorporamos uma matéria-prima se ela for especial e tiver história”, afirma Laura. Ela cita um exemplo: a linha L’Occitane au Brésil, em homenagem ao Brasil e a primeira produzida fora da fábrica na Provence. Lançada este ano, tem sabonetes, cremes e perfumes feitos a partir de extratos de mandacaru, jenipapo e vitória-régia, ingredientes genuinamente brasileiros. “A biodiversidade do país é única e comparável apenas à riqueza de cheiros da Provence”, diz ela, ao justificar o investimento.

AMONG THE CHILDHOOD MEMORIES of French businessman Olivier Baussan, one of the most striking is the fragrance of the lavender and rosemary fields on his way to school. Born in Provence, southeast France, Baussan grew up with the certainty that local smells were so special that they deserved to be replicated. In 1976, at the age of 23, he was studying literature when he decided to take the idea forward. He bought a second-hand still, harvested some seedlings and started to make some experiments in his garage. The first one resulted in a rosemary essential oil that was to be used in daily beauty rituals. The invention inspired him to produce soaps, lotions, creams and other Provençal essences, with ingredients such as verbena, lavender, roses and cherry blossom. Thus was founded L’Occitane en Provence, a cosmetics multinational present in 85 countries – and at Dufry stores.

Although at first he intended to use only Provençal raw materials, Baussan would eventually turn his eye to other places. In the early 1980s, during a holiday trip to Burkina Faso, he became fascinated with a buttery cream sold at street markets by women who had their hands and forearms well hydrated, quite unlike the rest of their bodies. Intrigued, Baussan found out that those women made the cream using shea fruit they crushed by hand. He realized the high nutritional power of shea butter and imported it to create an exclusive collection.

The first item was a 100-gram bar soap, and then the line was expanded to include a hand cream, which became a hit. “Every five seconds, someone in the world buys a shea butter hand cream,” says Laura Barros, Brand Director at L’Occitane Brazil. “It is the best selling of all.”

L’Occitane them adopted its characteristic business formula: mixing typical ingredients and fragrances and selling them in small vintage-style bottles, still designed

by Baussan himself from plaster molds. The choice of content remains strict and rigorous. “We only incorporate a raw material if it is special and has a history,” says Barros. An example is the line L’Occitane au Brésil, which is an homage to Brazil and is the first produced outside the Provence factory. Launched this year, it has soaps, creams and perfumes made from mandacaru, genipap and lilypad extracts – all genuinely Brazilian ingredients.

“The country’s biodiversity is unique and comparable only to the rich scents of Provence,” she says.

NO AR NA NOVELA DA GLOBO AMOR À VIDA, ela no papel da médica Rebeca e ele como o vilão Félix, Paula Braun e Mateus Solano estão juntos há quase seis anos. Mas só decidiram se casar oficialmente há dois. A lua de mel aconteceu em Londres, cidade que ainda não conheciam, e a estadia durou sete dias, o máximo que a saudade da filha, Flora, então com 11 meses, permitiu. O roteiro começou pelos principais pontos turísticos, como a London Eye, o Big Ben e a galeria Tate Modern, passando pelas feiras e mercados vintage. “Na Portobello Road, achei uma saia Dior vintage pela qual paguei uma bagatela”, lembra Paula. Já ambientados, os dois começaram a descobrir lugares charmosos caminhando pelas ruas, como o restaurante de um italiano, pequeno e sem luxo, mas com comida muito boa. Em Covent Garden, onde se hospedaram, um dos melhores achados foi a loja de brinquedos artesanais Benjamin Pollock’s. “Parecia que tínhamos voltado para a infância. Compramos muita coisa para nós e para a Flora”, conta a atriz, que assume ser obcecada por suvenires.

ACTING IN THE SOAP OPERA “AMOR À VIDA”, she as the doctor Rebeca and he as the villain Felix, Paula Braun and Mateus Solano have been together for six years. They decided to get married two years ago. The honeymoon happened in London. It was their first time there and they stayed for seven days, maximum time they could be away from their daughter Flora, who was then 11 months old. The trip started by the main tourist attractions, like the London Eye, the Big Ben and the Tate Modern Gallery, including fairs and vintage markets.

“At Portobello Road, I bought a Dior vintage skirt for a trifle” recalls Paula. Feeling at home, the couple began to discover charming places by walking the streets, such as an Italian restaurant, small and not luxurious but with delicious food.

In Covent Garden, where they were staying, one of the best findings was Benjamin Pollock’s, a store of handmade toys.

“It was like going back to childhood times. We bought many things for us and for Flora,” says Paula, who is admittedly obsessed with souvenirs.

VIAJAR É SEMPRE UMA FESTA, UMA NOVA AVENTURA. E aprendi que a descoberta pode ser ainda maior quando se recebe uma missão em terra estrangeira. Explico: em 2011, quando começaram as preparações para o Ano de Portugal no Brasil (setembro de 2012 a junho de 2013), fui convidada para conhecer a maior fábrica de cerâmicas portuguesa, a Faianças Artísticas Bordallo Pinheiro, em Caldas da Rainha, a cerca de 1 hora de Lisboa. O fundador, Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro (1846-1905), foi o artista, o patrão, o professor e o operário da marca, tudo ao mesmo tempo. Sua vida e obra inspiraram vários estudos, ações e viraram até tema de museu. Três, no caso: Bordalo Pinheiro, em Lisboa; Casa Museu São Rafael, em Caldas da Rainha; e Aliança Underground Museum, em Sangalhos.

No Brasil há acervos importantes sobre ele na Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo e no Museu Nacional de Belas Artes, no Rio de Janeiro.

Diante disso, imaginem meu susto e minha curiosidade ao saber que, durante a viagem, deveria criar uma obra inspirada no mestre, num grupo de 20 artistas brasileiros. E que tal desenvolver esse trabalho junto a talentos como Efrain Almeida, Vik Muniz, Barrão, Marcos Chaves, Tonico Lemos Auad, Adriana Barreto,

TRAVEL IS ALWAYS A PARTY, A NEW ADVENTURE. And I learned that the discovery may be even greater when you receive a mission in a foreign land. Let me explain: in 2011, when the preparations for the Year of Portugal in Brazil (September 2012-June 2013) began, I was invited to visit the biggest Portuguese earthenware factory, Bordallo Pinheiro, in Caldas da Rainha, about one hour from Lisbon. The founder, Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro (1846-1905), was the brand’s artist, boss, teacher and worker, all at the same time. His life and work have inspired several studies and some Portuguese museums. Three museums, actually: Bordalo Pinheiro, Lisbon; Casa Museu São Rafael, Caldas da Rainha; and Aliança Underground Museum, Sangalhos. In Brazil there are important collections in the Pinacoteca, São Paulo City, and the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes, Rio de Janeiro.

So, imagine my surprise to learn that, during the trip, I, as part of a group of 20 Brazilian artists, would have to create a work inspired by the master. How about working together to develop this project with Efrain Almeida, Vik

Devaneando, cheguei a Lisboa com o coração a mil. Sempre acontece isso quando vou para lá. Efrain, meu companheiro de viagem, também estava em êxtase. Nosso avião aterrissou às seis da manhã em Lisboa e corremos para o hotel SANA Silver Coast, que fica em cima do café A Brasileira. Deixamos as malas e fomos direto para a Ladra, uma feira popular de objetos usados, no Campo de Santa Clara, na região da Torre de Belém. Lá comprei moldes de roupas antigas e uma figa para a minha coleção.

Depois seguimos para o restaurante Gambrinus, onde almoçamos um maravilhoso empadão do mar com salada verde.

No dia seguinte partimos para Caldas da Rainha, rumo à fábrica da Bordallo Pinheiro. Antes de sair, encontramos Tiago e Erika, também felizes com a oportunidade desse projeto tão desafiador. Depois de muito pesquisar, na minha cabeça estava desenhado O despacho – nome da obra que criei. Agora era só encontrar os itens necessários entre o material já existente na fábrica. Logo que entrei, dei uma olhada e vi uma forma de cabeça de porco. Pensei: “Formou!”. Pontuava meu projeto. Juntei a ela legumes, ovos, frutas e, de repente, percebi que não poderiam faltar os lagartos e os insetos, itens típicos da cerâmica. Os moldes estavam prontos. O que fiz foi agrupá-los e fixá-los com musgo feito em uma peneira muito fina. Ao final do processo, uma peça estilo kitsch. Ver o resultado foi incrível.

Foram 15 dias em torno do trabalho. A jornada na fábrica da Bordallo Pinheiro começava cedo e terminava às 16 horas.

Aproveitamos o tempo que sobrava para conhecer as cidades do entorno: Óbidos, Alcobaça, Nazaré, Foz do Arelho, com direito a esticada até o Porto. O tempo voou, foi uma experiência maravilhosa. Me senti uma portuguesa de verdade durante aquelas semanas. Até hoje escuto o apito da fábrica, que soava no início e no fim do expediente. Parece que foi um sonho...

E viajar também é sonhar, certo?

Daydreaming, I arrived in Lisbon with my heart bumping. This always happens when I go there. Efrain Almeida, my travel mate, was also excited. Our plane landed at 6 a.m., and we ran to the SANA Silver Coast Hotel. We left our bags there and went straight to Ladra, the Campo de Santa Clara flea market. There I bought some ancient sewing patterns and another fig-sign amulet for my collection. Then we went to the Gambrinus, a restaurant where we had a wonderful fish and seafood pie with green salad for lunch.

Next day, we would go to the Bordallo Pinheiro factory in Caldas da Rainha. Before we left, we found Tiago Carneiro da Cunha and Erika Verzutti equally happy about our challenging project. After searching, I already had an earthenware design on my head: O despacho (“Dispatch”, the name Afro Brazilian religions give for certain supernatural conjurations).

Now I would just look for the items I needed in the factory. As soon as I walked in, I saw an earthenware pig head. I thought, “Done!” I joined its form with vegetables, eggs and fruits to complete the “offering” and, suddenly, I realized I could not leave out the lizards and bugs that are so characteristic of Bordallo Pinheiro products. The molds were ready, and I grouped and secured them with fine moss. At the end of the process, I had a kitsch piece. The end result would be amazing.

It took 15 days of work. The daily journey to the Bordallo Pinheiro factory began early and ended at 4 p.m. We took the time that was left to discover other villages, towns and cities: Óbidos, Alcobaça, Nazaré, Foz do Arelho and Porto. Time flew, and it was a wonderful experience. I felt like a real Portuguese during those weeks. Even today, I hear the factory whistle, which sounded at the beginning and the end of the workday. Looks like it was a dream… And traveling is also dreaming, right?
