NAFS awards KAMINCO USA for the most innovative product at Posidonia 2014

Galileo’s Cryobox

“The system is a proven technology having been awarded the Black Diamond award 2014 in USA through Buquebus project installation for technological innovation, project implementation, impact on the market and risks involved”.

During our visit at Posidonia 2014, we came accross several products or services. There was a plethora of engine makers, ship designers, specialized pumps and valves, conversion services of existing vessels to LNG fueled, ballast water treatment systems, software solutions, and many others. NAFS, as one of the most actively involved media in the maritime industry, once again at the Posidonia exhibition, searched to find the highlight of the event. Without any doubt, the search for alternative sources of energy was THE topic of interest, since the environmental compliance and the rising cost of energy affects significantly the shipping industry. The one thing missing, found

in only one stand, the stand of the Kaminis Family, was the LNG bunkering solution. The only efficient, scalable solution to produce LNG wherever, whenever and as much as you require is Argentinian Company Galileo’s Cryobox. Kaminco, once again introduces to the market the most innovative solution for LNG bunkering and LNG/CNG production on demand. The system is a proven technology having been awarded the Black Diamond award 2014 in USA*. KAMINCO USA, through its branch office in Greece, offers turn key solutions for all of Galileo’s technology in Greece and Cyprus.

NAFS, had the opportunity to talk with Mr. Sotiris Kaminis, Branch Manager of KAMINCO Greece. Mr. Kaminis told us about Buquebus which is a real example of the future of shipping. The ferry company has constructed its own terminal with Cryoboxes fuelling large cryogenic tanks ready to fuel any of its ships. Likewise, shipping companies may install their own terminals at their area of preference and assure the best fueling price for their ships. Whether you are close to the grid or not, you can have sustainable access to energy at a much lower operation cost and logistics hassle. The idea behind Cryobox is that you can have your LNG wherever your business is, and transfer it as your business moves. The installation is very quick and the cost is far lower than a traditional LNG plant construction. The technology is modular and scalable: As your business grows, you add extra Cryobox units to meet increasing demand. The only restriction that NAFS has identified is the lack of initiative by the Greek Government to react timely on the market’s demands. It is one thing to preach about market

development and support and totally different to act and follow through to its promises. Once more the only restriction to a new booming market in the Mediterranean Area, is the inability of the Greek Authorities to swiftly apply the legal platform in order LNG to become one more fuel for bunkering purposes. The Shipping Community has recognized the need for a safe, clean, and cost efficient fuel and ease of access to it. Greece is a main hub for commercial vessels, cruise ships and many more, thus, the need for LNG bunkering is imperative. *Buquebus has been honored with the annual Black Diamond Award. This award is given to the top LNG fuel project to advance technology, open new markets, and achieve the smoothest execution considering the degree of difficulty. The awarding was held during the last edition of the World LNG Fuels conference, which took place on January 21-23, 2014, at the George R. Brown Convention Center, in Houston, TX, USA.

radio ο γενικός διεθυντής της Anangel Maritime Services κ. Γιάννης Πλατσιδάκης, η οικονομική ανάκαμψη της Ελλάδος μπορεί να μην εξαρτάται από την ελάφρυνση του χρέους, αλλά από τις επενδύσεις στον ναυτιλιακό τομέα και όχι από τις επιδοτήσεις σε αποτυχημένες βιομηχανίες. Το τελικό συμπέρασμα από τα στοιχεία που παρετέθησαν γιά την οικονομική διάσταση της ναυτιλίας είναι: Ποιοτική και παραγωγική ναυτιλία έχουμε. Ποιοτικούς και παραγωγικούς πολιτικούς προϊσταμένους έχουμε στον εθνικό χώρο;

μετά τι;

What a difference 90 days makes for Private Equity funds in shipping Readers may remember my March article on “Private Equity Funds; an unfolding story”. At that time, PEFs were the talk of the town, with ripe speculation of the latest ventures with prominent Greek owners (see table 1). The Greek shipping world was split between the supporters of such joint ventures and avid objectors, who believed that joint ventures with PEFs were an anomaly and likely to end in disaster, both for Greek owners and for PEFs. To many, such investments would lead to excessive ordering that would perpetuate / further increase the chronic oversupply situation in shipping. Such fears were supported by the newbuilding order book that rose last year threefold to 150 dwt, the highest since 2010, according to Clarkson’s. In my article, I wrote “the so called shipping recovery potential that PEFs have latched on to is lacking fundamental support and may well turn out to be mere wishful thinking”. Furthermore, “An even bigger question is, what would happen if the market failed to rise as expected by PEFs and / or started to fall? What would be their exit strategy then?”. Three months later, market sentiment, especially for dry bulk joint ventures, has shifted drastically. Dry bulk freights continued to fall, with BDI from 2113 at the beginning of January 2014 to 1,316 at the beginning of April 2014, to low 800’s, currently. All dry bulk sectors were affected. Panamaxes, though, in particular, saw spot rates of approximately $2,000 per day which are being insufficient to cover but a small part of operating expenses. As the year progressed, smiles were replaced by frowns. Gone were the days of massive competition for the few available vessels for purchase and for mass orders, as vessel values, also, started to slide. Posidonia was foreshadowed by the “Excel story” and the reportedly “military style” separation of Oaktree’s interests from those of Mr. Villy Panayiotidis, with the latter,

to realise, as trying to liquidate at a profit in a falling market may not be possible. Still, the asset value appreciation is providing to these funds a useful cushion, for the time being. There are, of course, funds that are still optimistic that a recovery shall take place in the third and fourth quarter and prefer to stay put and take no remedial action. It may be wishful thinking but events may well justify their confidence yet.

apparently, losing Excel’s operations, staff and files, in a morning, as Oaktree vacated Excel’s Panayiotidis’ owned building. Could this be the way of things to come when things did not work out for PEFs? However, it should be noted that Excel is not an example of a shipping joint venture between a PEF and a Greek owner, as Oaktree bought into Excel as a distress recovery opportunity. Opinion is so fickle and interests differentiated that analysts and brokers brought out the long knives and started to talk of “picking up cheap vessels, as PEFs would flood the market in a “mad rush for the exit door”. Leaving out excessive and unsubstantiated alarmist or opportunistic remarks, I wish to shed some light into what may be the likely reaction and strategy by PEFs, shall the current poor market continue. My main point is that PEFs have many options in handling the situation and each will set their own agenda. There are those that invested early at lower vessel prices and are still enjoying a nice potential profit, should they choose to liquidate. Such potential profits, though, may be rather difficult

Without doubt, some PEFs have started to look at the possibility that the timing of their shipping investments may have been premature, in following a “recovery” story, without much substance. It is difficult for any organisation to admit such an error and, therefore, it would take a sustained bad market, for a “volte face”. The funds that have participated in newbuilding orders are particularly vulnerable, as reselling newbuilding orders at a profit or even breakeven may not be readily possible, unless the market would pick up. These funds may be the most tempted to lose their 5% or 10% and refuse to put good money after bad. Should this occur on a mass scale, it would take away the massive order overhang that is depressing the dry bulk sector For funds that have joint ventures, involving existing fleets, there are more options. They may seek to merge fleets of their own with different owners into a single and trusted owner, who would provide them with economies of scale, a lower cost of capital and a variety of exits via IPO’s, mergers and other disposal possibilities. It can be argued that Oaktree may be in the process of implementing such a strategy, with Mr. Petros Pappas, via supporting a merger of Star, with Pappas privately owned fleet, as well as passing to Star the management of the Excel, the Eagle and other fleet and / or other vessels under its control. Such a “grand union” would create a giant 150-ves-

financial focus nafs JUNE-JULY 2014 13 sel strong shipping company, with the might and ability to tap into the market at the first opportunity. The challenges posed on Star by becoming in a very short time a company of such gigantic proportions is daunting.

the point come for PEFs to bite the bullet, I believe that they will do so after having exhausted all measures aimed at improving their position in a stagnant market. Some funds that may have not participated in shipping, may find the opportunity to do so at a more attractive risk / reward basis. Also, it might be possible for whole fleets to change hands and be bought at attractive prices by Greek owners enjoying massive liquidity or by other PEFs with spare capacity.

Oaktree, contrary to public perception, is proving dynamic and provides timely responses to perceived dangers and opportunities. With the IPO market currently wary of shipping, many PEFs may need to rethink their exit strategy. Nevertheless, a mass exodus, typical of an overreaction, is hardly likely. PEFs are managed by astute and capable managers, who are unlikely to run for cover, unless all prospects of a recovery or an exit solution disappear. Should

One thing to always keep in mind is that the power to take decisions by PEFs, within their joint ventures, is absolute. Unlike in bank loan recoveries, PEFs’ ability to make swift changes in fleet managers is fully supported by the legal documentation, based on their overwhelming ownership of the

joint venture. However, whereas financial and management posturing and effecting changes to their joint ventures, as well as their fleets may well have merits, little could be achieved in the long run, unless the market would stage a robust recovery. The love affair between PEFs and Greek shipping will, no doubt, have many unfolding chapters ahead. The action and reaction of each PEF and its Greek owner will be of enormous interest to shipping. What is at stake is not only the fate of the owned and ordered fleets but whether shipping and PEFs can co-exist harmoniously and prosper, as well as withstand difficult times, proving that longer term symbiosis is possible.

Greek Shipping at a boom? Post Posidonia pulse

T

he first week of June 2014 in Greece demonstrated Greek shipping industry self-belief. The Exhibition at the airport area, highlighted the well organized mixture of companies’ stands displaying their products related in shipping business. Many parties, receptions and open houses took place and variety of people involved in shipping industry have travelled to Greece to attend well prepared meetings and gatherings. Does this mean that Greek shipping revived after years of a declined market? I believe that Greek shipping talent is alive and although the bad scenario of crisis has affected many ship-owners, the outlook is positive for years ahead. We have seen many new generation ship-owners who keep the same attitude and tradition in shipping as their fathers, and most important, their invention in stock exchange markets shows a different strong position in traditional shipping business in Greece. New orders have been reported in many s&p international reports on all types of vessels and “eco ships are expected to be delivered and trade very soon giving the advantage to Greek owners to confront the challenges and innovate in the business they know well. Private equity funds appeared recently to strike the old traditional

regime of lending funds to shipping companies in Greece and Greek ship-owners dear to enter into these deals preparing for a new era in Greek shipping industry. Many see, however, that there will be no boom soon as far as rates is concerned, ship prices, or capital funding on easy terms and there is no much optimism about quick recovery. One cannot but consider the difficulties in shipping industry the past years and recognize the strength of Greek ship-owners to comply with bombarding regulations and international shipping standards, insolvent charterers and tight rates, technology on new ships and different designs, crew nationalities and culture clash on board their ships and their offices, and admit that, despite the news we all read lately about unhappy investors who demand their returns in volatile markets from some ship-owners, nothing will change the mind and heart of Greek ship-owners who uniquely feel the pulse of shipping business worldwide and continue in believing that it is not just luck that, even since 4th century BC, Greek ship-owners were trading at sea and survived exceptionally until today. A positive mood only has come up after Posidonia 2014 in Greece and the impression of better, although difficult, times is evident to all of us attending such an important occasion for Greek economy.

και της Δανίας, καθώς και εταιρείες όπως η ABB, η Transas, η MAN Diesel and Turbo, η Alfa Laval, η Marichem Marigases και πολλοί άλλοι, έχουν ήδη επιβεβαιώσει τη συμμετοχή τους στην έκθεση του 2016.

Τsakos Columbia Shipmanagement (TCM) achieves ISO 50001 certification by Lloyd’s Register

L

loyd’s Register has awarded Tsakos Columbia Shipmanagement (TCM) with ISO 50001 certification attesting TCM’s commitment to continuously improve its energy efficiency by using best practice for efficient energy use and conservation throughout their fleet. The Energy Management System is applicable to shipmanagement of a fleet of oil and chemical tankers trading worldwide, incorporating the safety and pollution prevention requirements of IMO resolution A.741 (18), the ISM Code and associated office activities. “Certification to ISO 50001 was a milestone for TCM”, said Vassilis Papageorgiou, Vice Chairman of Tsakos Group at a presentation ceremony held during Posidonia last week. Apostolos Poulovassilis, LR’s Regional Marine Manager, EMEA commented, ‘These standards are about the whole

process of energy management which is an integral part of TCM’s management systems and operating philosophy. The pleasure of handing over the certificate comes after a lot of hard work by TCM and LR in getting to this stage.’ Capt. Panagiotis Drosos, Managing Director of TCM, stated that the company’scommitment to safe, clean and efficient shipping operations - providing high quality services to the clients and being proactive in satisfying upcoming regulations, customer requirements and society’s expectations – is significantly supported by the certification . Mr. Sokratis Dimakopoulos, TCM’s Deputy Managing Director, pointed out that energy management is critical to the ship operations.’Fuel cost is ourmajor cost. Improving energy efficiency reduces fuel consumption and as such

reduces operating cost for TCM and its clients. In addition, being energy efficient has become a legal and industry requirement and assists in reducing the environmental impact associated with CO2 emissions from shipping operations. Therefore, certifying our energy management system in accordance with the ISO 50001 was essential in enabling the company to have a system in place to improve energy performance on a continual basis.’ TCM has previously achieved certification against a number of internationally recognised standards, among them ISO 14001 for environmental management, OHSAS 18001 for occupational health and safety and ISO 9001 for quality management. Also, the Maria Tsakos TCM Academy has recently been accredited as an Approved Training Provider by Lloyd’s Register as well

as certified to the BS EN ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System Standard by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance. The ISO 50001 standard is a voluntary international energy management system standard that specifies the requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving an energy-management system. It offers companies a systematic approach to continually improve energy performance, including energy efficiency, use and consumption. It also provides shipping companies with a way to actively reduce their energy consumption and associated GHG emissions from ships. The standard presents a comprehensive and clear approach to smart energy use, providing companies with a framework to manage their energy consumption and, ultimately, to take advantage of renewable energy technologies.

Aegean Shipping Management awarded Business Continuity certification by Lloyd’s Register

Aegean Shipping Management has become the first Greek shipping company and amongst the first worldwide to be awarded the ISO 22301 Business Continuity certification by LRQA. This certification further enhances Aegean’s already strong management systems structure, and demonstrates the company’s commitment to increased resilience and uninterrupted day to day operations on land and sea.

D

uring a ceremony held at both Lloyd’s Register’s and Aegean’s stand ον June 5th, on the occasion of the Posidonia 2014 International Exhibition, Mr. George Melissanidis, CEO of Aegean Shipping Management, received the certification against ISO 22301 from Lloyd’s Register. ISO 22301 is the international standard for Business Continuity specifying the requirements for setting up and managing an effective Business Continuity Management System (BCMS). Aegean’s ISO 22301 certification is the fifth management systems certification awarded to the company by LRQA, following those of ISO 9001:2008 for Quality Management, ISO

14001:2004 for Environmental Management, OHSAS 18001:2007 for Occupational Health & Safety Management System and ISO 50001:2011 for Energy Management. This new ISO 22301 certification now serves to further strengthen Aegean’s already solid integrated management systems structure and demonstrates the company’s commitment for increased resilience, uninterrupted operations and increased capability to handle disruption. Mr. George Melissanidis of Aegean Shipping Management said at the presentation ceremony: “Being the first Greek shipping company to achieve Business Continuity ISO 22301 certification we confirm our

commitment for continuous improvement and enhancement of our customer satisfaction. This international standard will reassure our customers and interested parties for our Company’s response abilities and mechanisms for quick recovery in any case required. Of course no one likes to encounter either natural or other disasters. However, we do believe that you need to be best prepared for such incidents when they do happen.” Mr Melissanidis continued, “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Hellenic Lloyd’s & LRQA for their support and professional guidance not only during the recent certification process but throughout our long-term relationship.”

Deputy Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament, John Tragakis, visited our stand and expressed their positive comments for our contribution in the marine industry sector. Many government officials, local ship-owners, partners and visitors from abroad also visited our stand at the Athens Metropolitan Expo, in order to be informed about our services, discuss possible cooperation & make deals during this international five-day event. With our participation in POSIDONIA 2014 we received a strong message verifying that with good work, the right approach and the creation of appropriate conditions, DEVELOPMENT can become a real destination for our country”.

RINA, the International Classification Society, has been present also to this year’s successful Posidonia 2014 exhibition that attracted the attention of the global shipping community for the week from 2 to 6 of June. The RINA Seminar organized during the exhibition in the Conference Hall attracted great attention of over 200 participants. This year had the title “Environmental update: Could compliance with the regulations be cost effective?” and was held on Wednesday the 4th. The presentations were delivered by Mr. Paolo Moretti, RINA General Manager for Marine Business Solutions and his Deputy and responsible for Marine Innovation, Mr. Andrea Cogliolo. The event was moderated by Mr. Andreas Papalimneos, Manager of Piraeus Training Center. The panel gave an overview of regulations relevant to the environmental protection with a special focus on fuel efficiency/air emissions reduction measures and LNG fuelled ships,

an area where RINA has a great expertise to offer. As expected, the Q&A time was very active with lots of interesting topics discussed. On the same day just after the seminar, RINA hosted a cocktail at its elegant stand and apart of the seminar participants, many other guests joined, some of them among the most prominent personalities of Greek and International Shipping. Among others, two agreements were celebrated during the cocktail. One was the signature of an agreement with a well-known Cypriot based ship management Company, Oesterreichischer Lloyd, Seereederei (Cyprus) Ltd., that characterizes the commitment of RINA to increase its presence in this important area. The second was a Letter of Intent relevant to the cooperation with the TMS Company based in Oman that would better support RINA development in this area of the Middle East.

Alfa Laval Has waste fuel recovery become an industry standard overnight?

To learn more about PureDry and Alfa Laval’s approach to waste fuel recovery, visit www.alfalaval.com/marine

In the marine industry, it is almost unheard of for a new application to penetrate the market quickly, especially when it builds entirely on a new technology. Yet judging by major orders for Alfa Laval’s PureDry – placed by the leading ship owners in nearly every vessel category – this is exactly what has happened. Simply put, waste fuel recovery and PureDry have changed the industry.

S

ince 2008, MARPOL rule MEPC.1/Circ.642 has allowed the recovery and reuse of the HFO fraction of waste oil as engine fuel. As yet, however, only one product has emerged to take advantage of it. Alfa Laval’s PureDry separator lets vessels recover virtually all of their fuel oil losses, which range from 0.5 to 2% of their total fuel consumption. “In general, I can only think of this as an excellent idea,” says Jacob Norrby, Newbuilding Project Manager for Stena. “We recover something that is normally wasted, and that we sometimes have to add energy to in order to burn it.” His company is just one of the leading players who together have ordered more than 100 PureDry systems for newbuilds in progress. Joining Stena are Carnival Corporation, Frontline, MSC, Norwegian Cruise Line and Wallenius, whose shipyards are installing the system aboard cruise vessels, product tankers, container vessels, capesize bulk carriers, car carriers and more. Even more remarkable than the range of vessels is the fact that all of their designs have been modified by the shipyard to segregate fuel and lube oil waste. This marks a paradigm shift, as vessel design changes to accommodate a truly

new separation technology. “This is exactly the sort of thing we’ve been waiting and longing for,” says Christer Karlsson, Sr. Vice President Newbuilding for Norwegian Cruise Line. “I realize that makes me sound like a salesperson, but I really can’t say anything other than that.” An opportunity long hoped for Indeed, the arrival of PureDry is the end of a long wait for an effective way to deal with waste fuel oil. Previous attempts with traditional separators have marginally reduced waste volumes, but process water and discharge losses have allowed a large amount of waterlogged, fuel-containing waste to remain. “For many years, all this was just considered sludge, because there was no cost-effective equipment capable of cleaning fuel out of it,” says Renato Storari, Director of Research & Development for Carnival Corporation. “This is the space into which PureDry now fits.” “The treatment and disposal aspect was normal, in that it’s been addressed over the years,” agrees JS Narayanan, Manager Newbuilding Projects for Frontline. Naranayan was somewhat surprised to learn of a solution that gets fuel out of the sludge, rather than simply reducing its volume. “This is new,” he says, “the recovery of fuel from what was previously thrown out.” Others were not so much surprised by the arrival of a solution as they were by the solution’s merit. “Knowing that there’s 1-2% fuel (losses) in the sludge, it’s not surprising that this application should develop,” says Jacob Norrby of Stena. “But what’s encouraging is that we see PureDry as a quality product. It’s engineered well, and the technology Alfa Laval has built on is good.” Embracing a breakthrough technology Technology, of course, is what

waste fuel recovery depends upon. PureDry is a remarkable hybrid technology: a high-speed disc-type centrifugal separator with a solid bowl, yet one that is self-cleaning as well. In well over a century of centrifugal separation, there has never been anything like it. Says Martin von Sydow, Vice President Newbuildings for Wallenius, “We didn’t really expect PureDry, which is pretty advanced in our opinion.” As the name suggests, PureDry requires no process water and leaves no liquid in the solid waste. Nor does it have a bowl aperture or hydraulics. In the words of Stena’s Jacob Norrby, “The separator looks fairly simple, which is some of the beauty of it.” In fact, the only major moving parts are an outer bowl and a separator insert, which rotate at slightly different speeds. Attached to the insert is the XCavator, a patented spiral device that transports the separated, super-dry solids into a container at PureDry’s base. Still another departure from traditional self-cleaning separators is the way that maintenance is performed. PureDry relies on Maintenance and Service by Exchange, whereby the separator insert and XCavator are replaced at fixed intervals. “This is attractive, because the crew on board are not high-tech experts,” says Frontline’s JS Narayanan. “The complete renewal of the rotating assembly makes maintenance simpler and easier, so we don’t expect much workload on the crew.”

Firmly convinced by the savings Using PureDry, virtually all of a vessel’s fuel oil losses can be recovered with ISO 8217 quality. The elimination of this energy leak has a strong environmental implication, but above all it makes for a bulletproof business case. “We live in an economic reality,” says Martin von Sydow of Wallenius. “We have to motivate our investments from an economic as well as an environmental point of view. But when it comes to PureDry, we can be very confident in both aspects.” Stena’s Jacob Norrby agrees. “These two things go hand in hand,” he says. “This is not a cheap investment, so it’s nothing you just run out and buy. You have to support the purchase.” Christer Karlsson of Norwegian Cruise Line, which has two ships with PureDry on board and more – including one retrofit – on the way, says the support is easy to find. “Counting low, think something around USD 100,000 per vessel per year,” he suggests. “With our fleet of around 15 vessels, that’s USD 1.5 million annually. Plus it has the advantage that we don’t have to land all that sludge.” Fewer procedures, greater control For many ship owners, there is also a strong business case in the minimization of sludge volumes, which PureDry reduces by 99%. Some of them, like MSC, claim this is the decisive factor. “This

article nafs JUNE-JULY 2014 27 product’s best and most unique advantage,” says MSC Manager Newbuilding Projects Giuseppe Gargiulo. “We strongly believe in PureDry.” PureDry leaves just 5-10 kg per day of non-pumpable, super-dry solids, which are landed simply as dry waste. All of the water, with an oil content of approximately 100 ppm, is passed on to the bilge water system. This does away with the whole procedure of offloading waste to a barge. “We don’t want to see any barges near our vessels except for the barges delivering fuel,” says Gargiulo, noting that there is no fuel whatsoever in the solid waste that remains. “We believe this is an important step, even from an environmental point of view. We can now know exactly what we’re doing with all of our fuel, every bit. We can have the entire fuel process under control.” Making room for a new application If there is anything to complicate the PureDry business case, it is the fact that modifications in vessel design are needed to achieve all the benefits. On the one hand, PureDry makes it possible to reduce sludge tank holding capacities by at least 50% under current legislation. But to recover fuel in addition to reducing waste, the streams of waste fuel oil and waste lube oil must be segregated. Segregating the tanks, rather than demonstrating PureDry’s effectiveness, has thus been the main hurdle. “The real obstacle for us in terms of installing it was that most

of our ships collect fuel and lube oil sludge together, in a combined system,” says Carnival Corporations’ Renato Storari. “This is why we haven’t installed any units until now – it’s not because the system isn’t proven or efficient.” For a newbuild, of course, the procedure is simpler, since the changes can be made on the drawing board. Yet for shipyards unfamiliar with waste fuel recovery, even this has led to some discussion. “The product is unique, so there was no challenge in selecting it,” says JS Narayanan of Frontline. “The challenge was making the shipyard understand the simplicity of it. But once it has been done with one shipyard, others can simply follow.” As shipyards grow more familiar with the application and with PureDry itself, smoother integration can be expected. Even among the ship owners currently installing PureDry, there are already many who have found the procedure painless. “The really big yards in the Far East are often reluctant to put new technologies in,” says Martin von Sydow of Wallenius. “It can take some persuading, but in this case it was rather easy.” Proving its worth at sea One of the ship owners that has been through the installation procedure is Norwegian Cruise Line, who has been operating PureDry on Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway for around a year now. “We had the waste fuel recovery process drawn in, so it’s been very easy to implement it – no problem at all in fact,” says Christer Karlsson. He also confirms that PureDry has lived up to expectations: “We see good results on Breakaway and Getaway.” Carnival Corporation, too, has seen its expectations met in practice. “We tested PureDry on one of our ships, the Costa Luminosa,” Renato Storari relates. “In the six months of the test, we processed 32 tonnes of fuel oil sludge, and we recovered 9 tonnes of good fuel for reuse. In addition, we removed 22 tonnes of water. That

Fact box:

Industry leaders on waste fuel recovery and Alfa Laval’s PureDry “Without PureDry, the vessel would need to deposit 32 tonnes of sludge every six months. Now that’s reduced to one tonne.” Renato Storari, Director of Research & Development, Carnival Corporation “We welcome anything that can lead to savings in our fuel use and the reduction of emissions. We welcome the new technology.” JS Narayanan, Manager Newbuilding Projects, Frontline “How much are you wasting by burning one tonne of sludge? It’s unbelievable, not only how much money you’re wasting, but also how much goes into the atmosphere. PureDry is a revolutionary system that allows reuse of the fuel instead.” Giuseppe Gargiulo, Manager Newbuilding Projects, MSC “I think this has been a very successful introduction of a new technology. PureDry has an enormous potential for the world’s fleet and for anyone who thinks in terms of fuel economy. Simply put, it’s a huge success.” Christer Karlsson, Sr. Vice President Newbuilding, Norwegian Cruse Line “If we expect to recoup 1% of the bunker consumption, that’s on the margins of what is possible to measure. But we believe in the technology. And we expect it to work as intended in regard to performance and maintenance.” Jacob Norrby, Newbuilding Project Manager, Stena “The selection of PureDry was an easy decision from our side. We’ve worked with Alfa Laval for a long time and have great confidence in their technical abilities. But also the savings presented in relationship to the investment costs made this an easy business case to make.” Martin von Sydow, Vice President Newbuildings, Wallenius All interviews for this article were conducted by telephone between 8 April and 11 April 2014. To learn more about PureDry and Alfa Laval’s approach to waste fuel recovery, visit www.alfalaval.com/marine left us with only 1 tonne of sludge.” The arrival of a new standard? With the savings documented so far, it is hardly surprising that there is talk of waste fuel recovery as a new standard. “For us, waste fuel recovery is going to be standard on all newly built vessels,” says Christer Karlsson when asked about PureDry’s future with Norwegian Cruise Line. “We know that PureDry works, and it would make no sense to do anything otherwise when you think about all the money it can save.” Likewise, a precedent is being set by the sheer number of vessels where PureDry is drawn in from the beginning. “For newbuilds, we specify the segregation of fuel

and lube oil sludge systems,” says Renato Storari of Carnival Corporation. “We’ve changed the specification of our vessels because of the new technology.” Even among the installing ship owners who have no direct experience with PureDry, the sentiment is much the same. “We haven’t seen it in operation yet, but we strongly believe this will work,” says MSC’s Giuseppe Gargiulo. “It’s our intention to retrofit vessels based on the outcome of these installations. If this works, we’ll be placing a lot of orders. Summing up, Gargiulo puts simply what the whole industry seems to be saying about waste fuel recovery: “This is the future, we believe.”

A potentially game-changing pressurized EGR boiler from Alfa Laval is now ready for testing Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) has firmly shown its ability to comply with Tier III NOx limits, which will enter into force in January 2016. Developed by MAN Diesel & Turbo, the EGR process already relies on Alfa Laval’s PureNOx, which provides the vital cleaning of the scrubber water. Now Alfa Laval is cooperating with MAN Diesel & Turbo to implement an EGR boiler, which could potentially add major energy benefits to the secure emission compliance. Over 1000 hours of EGR operation have now been achieved aboard the Maersk Cardiff, a container newbuild from A.P. Moller-Maersk with a twostroke MAN B&W 6S80ME-C9 engine. Having demonstrated reliable compliance with Tier III NOx legislation, as well as the potential for fuel savings in Tier II operation, the vessel’s EGR installation will soon be expanded with another remarkable technology: a pressurized EGR boiler from Alfa Laval. “We have shown that EGR works smoothly and that it complies fully with the NOx limits appearing in 2016,” says Michael Witt, Head of Retrofit Development R&D at MAN Diesel & Turbo. “Together with Alfa Laval and A.P. Moller-Maersk, we are now looking beyond compliance to optimize the system and to utilize opportunities for energy savings.” Accord-

ing to Anders Busk Nielsen, Project Manager at Alfa Laval’s Product Centre Boilers, one such opportunity is waste heat recovery. “EGR is a fantastic technology that is already well served by Alfa Laval’s separation know-how,” Nielsen says. “Now we are adding our expertise in waste heat recovery, by placing a pressurized exhaust gas boiler in the EGR circuit. If successful, it could add substantial energy savings to NOx emission compliance.”

Reclaiming the diverted waste heat The reasons for developing an EGR boiler are straightforward. In the EGR process, around 30% of the exhaust gas is directed back into the engine, which reduces the combustion temperature and thereby the production of NOx. This also reduces waste heat recovery by 30%, since only 70% of the gas reaches the traditional exhaust gas boiler after the turbocharger. The remaining heat energy is dissipated in the EGR scrubbing process. “The idea is to place an in-line boiler ahead of the EGR wet scrubber, before the scrubber jets cool the exhaust gas,” says Nielsen. “In this location, the boiler would have access to much higher temperatures and pressures than traditional exhaust gas boilers. That would allow a lighter and more compact boiler, which would be self-cleaning due to the high speed of flow.” The heat would be recovered

from the EGR circuit, and the availability of service steam would be unchanged from today. Moreover, as part of an integrated waste heat recovery system, the EGR boiler would enable a major increase in efficiency.

rsk Cardiff in order to hopefully demonstrate its promising potential for energy optimization in connection with the existing EGR installation,” says Ole Christensen, Senior Machinery Specialist at A.P. MollerMaersk.

Standing up to extreme postengine conditions If the theory is simple, the challenges of constructing an EGR boiler are anything but. Today’s waste heat recovery involves temperatures of around 270°C, whereas temperatures before the EGR scrubber are twice that. In addition, the potential gas pressure in the EGR circuit is 2-4 bar(g), which necessitates a pressurized boiler casing. “Managing the extreme conditions has been a real challenge for the Alfa Laval development team,” says Nielsen. “These are conditions no ordinary boiler would be able to survive. But what we’ve developed is no ordinary boiler.” The boiler Nielsen refers to is the new Aalborg XW-HPX pressurized EGR boiler, which is indeed lighter and more compact than any boiler with an equivalent output. Tentatively planned for launch in 2015, the boiler has moved off the drawing board and is now scheduled for test installation aboard the Maersk Cardiff late this summer. “As a front-runner in the pursuit of green technologies, we are interested in testing the new EGR boiler aboard the Mae-

Up to 10% more steam power production What exactly could the Aalborg XW-HPX achieve if successful? As a producer of service steam, it would provide the same saturated steam as a traditional exhaust gas boiler, though it would be more cost-efficient and easier to install. Yet a great potential lies in integrating the Aalborg XWHPX with existing waste heat recovery after the turbocharger, so that it shares a steam drum with the traditional exhaust gas boiler. With the output of the traditional boiler feeding into this drum, the Aalborg XWHPX would produce extremely high-quality steam with a temperature of 400°C, bringing the waste heat recovery system to a much higher level of efficiency. “Producing steam of this quality would greatly increase the performance of the steam turbine,” says Nielsen. “To give an indication, we’ve made calculations together with a leading steam turbine supplier. Those calculations put the power generation increase at 7.5-10%, depending on installation factors.” On the Maersk Cardiff, for example, the additional generated power could be used to cool

containers, thereby limiting the fuel consumed by the genset. But if fed into a shaft generator, it could instead increase the efficiency of the propulsion system, saving considerable fuel as a result.

Fuel savings through even slower steaming Given the higher output, the increased efficiency in waste heat recovery would be interesting for any vessel like the Maersk Cardiff. Yet the Aalborg XW-HPX could prove its worth in still other ways. Most importantly, using it in an integrated boiler system would allow waste heat recovery to occur at lower main engine loads than today – creating the possibility for even slower steaming. “The Maersk Cardiff has around 20 sister vessels, all with traditional waste heat recovery systems to compare with,” says Nielsen. “With the Aalborg XW-HPX, we should be able to both increase the efficiency and extend the operating hours of waste heat recovery, which would enable slower steaming and a massive fuel savings. That would be reflected not only in a lower fuel bill, but also in a CO2 reduction on top of the NOx abatement.” “This is perhaps the most exciting prospect of Alfa Laval’s EGR boiler,” says Witt. “If the

Aalborg XW-HPX can shift the operating balance for waste heat recovery by even a small percentage, the potential savings for ship owners and operators is enormous.”

Potential savings within the EGR circuit Finally, employing the Aalborg XW-HPX within the EGR circuit could create synergies within the EGR system itself. By removing some of the exhaust gas heat prior to the wet scrubber, it might allow the already compact PureNOx water clean-

“Managing the extreme conditions has been a real challenge for the Alfa Laval development team,” says Nielsen. “These are conditions no ordinary boiler would be able to survive. But what we’ve developed is no ordinary boiler.” The boiler Nielsen refers to is the new Aalborg XW-HPX pressurized EGR boiler, which is indeed lighter and more compact than any boiler with an equivalent output. ing unit to be downsized. “When you take exhaust gas at 450°C and spray water through it to cool it to 50°C, you need a lot of water and a high-capacity water cleaning unit,” explains Nielsen. “If the EGR boiler can

Potentially, that could mean less water needed and an even smaller PureNOx.”

Ready for testing at sea The theory behind the EGR boiler is solid, and land-based concept tests have already shown that a smaller installation can withstand the operating extremes. What remains to determine, however, is the boiler’s effect on the NOx abatement process. This is the reason for adding an Aalborg XW-HPX to the existing EGR installation on the Maersk Cardiff. “Up to now, we have wanted to run the EGR system aboard the Maersk Cardiff without the influence of additional equipment,” says Witt. “Based on the good results seen there, however, we are confident of EGR’s ability to meet the NOx limits appearing in 2016. This means we can take the next step, installing the Aalborg XW-HPX as a part of energy-optimizing the NOx abatement technology.” Supported by the Danish Energy-Technological Development and Demonstration

Programme (EUDP), the project continues the close partnership between MAN Diesel & Turbo, Alfa Laval, A.P. Moller-Maersk and Aalborg University. “We are happy to extend the good cooperation that already exists aboard the Maersk Cardiff, and we look forward to being part of the EGR boiler test,” says Christensen. “The test will provide further knowledge and experience, and hence enable us to make informed decisions regarding the selection of NOx abatement technologies for coming Tier III projects.” Testing of the Aalborg XW-HPX aboard the Maersk Cardiff will begin in the second half of 2014, and Nielsen foresees no interference with the EGR system. On the contrary, he anticipates that the EGR boiler will add to the overall attractiveness of EGR as a NOx abatement strategy. “With an EGR boiler as part of the complete EGR system, it should be possible not only to reduce NOx by 80%, but also to reduce the emission of CO2, since there is the potential of substantially lower fuel consumption,” Nielsen says. “Nothing is proven yet, but this is absolutely what we expect.”

Alfa Laval to equip Finnlines vessels with PureSOx scrubber systems The order intake for the Alfa Laval PureSOx scrubber system continues to intensify as January 2015 approaches. Four PureSOx systems have now been ordered by Finnlines, a leading provider of RoRo and Ropax services, whose Baltic Sea and North Sea operations will soon fall within an Emission Control Area (ECA).

RoRo and Ropax vessels from Finnlines offer services from Finland to Germany, North Sea Ports, Spain and via the Åland Islands to Sweden, as well as from Germany to Russia. Following a recent order, four of the company’s existing RoRo vessels will now be equipped with PureSOx scrubber systems from Alfa Laval. “With Alfa Laval PureSOx, Finnlines will be able to continue using HFO in an area of operation where ECA limits apply as of January 2015,” says René Diks, Manager Marketing & Sales, Exhaust Gas Cleaning at Alfa Laval. “In just a few months, having a scrubber like PureSOx on board will give these vessels an immediate fuel cost advantage over competitors who switch to distillates.” “Finnlines’ objective is to guarantee long-term profitability through high-quality operations, and the installation of scrubber systems on our modern RoRo vessels is a major step in the implementation of our strategy,” says Emanuele Grimaldi, President and CEO of Finnlines. “Installing PureSOx from Alfa Laval will allow us to comply with ECA limits while ensuring continued fuel economy. The ex-

tensive experience that Alfa Laval has in this area, together with the retrofit services the company can provide, will help us greatly during the engineering and installation phases of this programme.” One scrubber for multiple engines Alfa Laval will fulfil the Finnlines order in late 2014. Retrofits of the RINA-classified Finnhawk, Finnkraft, Finnmill and Finnpulp will be conducted at yards in Northern Europe, with installation and commissioning taking place from December 2014 to January 2015. Although the vessels all have four-stroke engines from MAN, their PureSOx configurations will differ somewhat. On the Finnhawk and Finnkraft, which have single engines of 12.6 MW, singleinlet scrubbers will be used. The Finnmill and Finnpulp, which each have two engines of 9.45 MW, will instead have multiple-inlet scrubbers. “Having multiple inlets will allow us to reduce the space and equipment requirements aboard the Finnmill and Finnpulp by using one scrubber to handle both engines,” Diks says. Prepared for the Baltic and the future The Alfa Laval PureSOx systems for all four Finnlines vessels are designed for open-loop operation with seawater, which means they are sized for the low alkalinity of the Baltic Sea. “The further north you sail, the less alkaline the Baltic Sea becomes,” explains Diks. “This has to be taken into account when installing an open-loop system for these waters, because the alkalinity of the seawater has

a direct impact on the scrubber’s cleaning capacity.” In addition, Finnlines has chosen a versatile scrubber design that leaves the possibility for a later conversion into hybrid systems. “The PureSOx systems aboard

our vessels will provide compliance and fuel economy in 2015, but also the flexibility to add closed-loop operation down the road,” says Grimaldi. “This will enable us to meet the future with confidence.”

Turbocharger UPGRADE!

T

he engine’s operation at part load conditions leads to the low efficiency performance of the turbocharger. To be more specific, the turbocharger is no longer performing in its design point. As a result there is a low air mass flow and low charge air pressure. The turbocharger is no longer matched to the current part load operation of the engine.

This phenomenon affects the combustion cycle in such a way that the exhaust gas temperatures are higher than acceptable. Black smoke, NOx emissions and fuel consumption are increased.

In TURBOMED S.A we propose a most optimum and cost efficient solution in order to optimize the turbocharger’s performance when the engine is operating in the desirable part load range. By changing the turbocharger’s specification, which means replacing the existing rotor shaft, nozzle ring, insert wall and diffuser with ones of a new sufficient specification, we can rematch the turbocharger to the engine. With this upgrade we can achieve a considerable improvement and avoid the poor performance of the turbocharger and the engine at part loads as well as any future damages. Over the last 20 years, our experienced service engineers have performed this upgrade in many vessels. We are certain that we can boost your engine’s operation and the overall performance of your vessel! Ioli Dodi

Retrofit Retrofit Experience

Over the years, our experience has shown that in many cases the repair of a vessel’s turbocharger is not cost efficient and more importantly is not reliable for the safe operation of the vessel. The engine’s turbocharger (T/C) in a vessel often due to various reasons such as poor fuel’s composition or slow streaming of the vessel fails to operate efficiently. This leads to recurring repairs and increased fuel consumptions. In these cases the best and most appropriate solution is the replacement of the old turbocharger model (retrofit) with a new unit of more modern technology that results in improved fuel consumption and exhaust gas temperatures before and after the T/C. The life expectance of the T/C also increases.

Retrofit Process

In order to suggest a successful retrofit solution our engineers collect the engine’s and T/C’s data along with photos that show the connection of the two. After careful study and analysis they decide on the T/C’s coupling and mechanical adaptation to the engine. Any specifications needed on the nozzle ring and diffuser, are being considered in this process.

When the turbocharger is ready, it is being packaged and shipped to its destination. The service technicians are responsible for uninstalling the old model, making any modifications needed on the connecting parts and installing the new turbocharger.

Retrofit solutions

After careful study and analysis Turbomed can suggest the best alternative solution for the optimum performance of the vessel’s engine: • Retrofit opportunities of the most popular T/C makers • KBB HPR & ST series • Turbomed in collaboration with the National Technical University of Athens, is in the process of designing a new turbocharger series that will cover a range of the rated output of diesel generator engines from 350 kW to 2000kW .

Modification Kit

Turbomed can supply any spare parts needed in retrofit and also design and manufacture the required modification kit including all connection pipes and flanges for air/exhaust gas inlet/outlet etc.

Bureau Veritas:

ENTERPRISES SHIPPING & TRADING S.A evaluated and assessed according to ISO 26000 Bureau Veritas Hellas evaluated and assessed ENTERPRISES SHIPPING & TRADING S.A according to ISO 26000, the first global voluntary Standard on Corporate Social Responsibility. During Bureau Veritas Hellas S.A. reception held in Ecali Club on May 30, 2014, the Regional Chief Executive for the Hellenic & Black Sea Region, Mr. Lambros A. Chahalis presented the relevant evaluation report to Messrs. Victor Restis and

introducing innovative new rules which account for actual loads as opposed to the more conservative North Atlantic conditions. Bureau Veritas is pioneering new techniques to study phenomena like whipping and springing which are not fully understood or considered in the design of “flexible” slender vessels like Lakers, VLOCs and ULCCs. In the same spirit, he discussed the technique applied by BV to study the alignment of shafting taking into account the deformations of the Engine Room Dr. John Kokarakis then discussed the challenges associated with the selection and installation of Ballast Water Treatment Systems. Given the large number of required retrofits, the short time available and the extended scope of class

approval, review and approval of the design is a challenge by itself. The convention allows for application of advanced tools like 3-d laser scanning and flow cytometry. It is necessary to study all available systems in great detail in order to be able to select the most suitable one. On the other hand caution should be exercised to preserve coatings and the targets of reduced CO2 emissions. Global and local currents might render the treatment process meaningless. Special guest of the event was the Managing Director of The Republic of the Marshall Islands – International Registries Inc., Mr. Theofilos K. Xenakoudis. All participants to the Committee meeting concluded the day with a lunch at the “Kohylia” Restaurant of the Grand Resort Lagonissi.

George Sarris. As Mr. Chachalis commented during the presentation, “We at BV supporting innovative solutions to improve sustainable actions, are very happy to present to the company, being the first in Greece, such an evaluation report. This management’s decision was greeted as a major leap forward in the firm’s trajectory since its founder’s, Mr. Stamatios Restis’s era, and one that further enhances the organization’s commitment in all aspects of safety, environmental and seafarers’ conditions of employment across the ships of its whole fleet.” The key benefits of ISO 26000 evaluation offers strategic ad-

vantage within each company’s competitive industry, streamlines internal processes and assures the implementation of commitment to social responsibility and sustainability ,protects the brand image and increases customer and employee satisfaction and attracts investors and sponsors concerned with social responsibility and sustainable development. Bureau Veritas Hellas S.A. is the first Independent Organization to perform such Social Responsibility evaluation in Greece, our auditors have extensive knowledge of specific industry sectors and local regulations, which enables them to provide solutions adapted to various needs.

WISTA

Meeting for the Members and Friends of WISTA Cyprus

I

t was an interesting meeting for the Members and Friends of WISTA Cyprus on Wednesday 21 May. Marianna Charalambous, with a Juris Doctorate in International Law and an LLM in Oil and Gas, is an expert in the delimitation of maritime boundaries, and a member of WISTA Cyprus. During the meeting she outlined the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the international law currently applicable in the delimitation of maritime boundaries. She presented the conflicting claims currently in the Mediterranean and assessed their validity in lieu of the applicable law. A de facto situation under the law never acquires a de jury status without the consent of the affected party she noted therefore she argued that the only legitimate entity to grant a license for exploration in the Cyprus maritime zone including up to 50% the distance between the Cyprus and Turkish coasts is the Republic of Cyprus. She urged that we consider the possibility of large hydrocarbon reserves found north of Kyrenia and the impact of such finds on the issues currently faced by this island. After her presentation the audience had many questions and a lively discussion took place, that continued during the reception that followed. Another subject that was intensively discussed was the preparation for the 34th WISTA International AGM and Conference, that will be held in Limassol from 8 – 10 October of this year. Many sponsors and speakers have already been announced and can be found on the conference website: www.wistacyprus2014.com

VIKING and Topaz

sign major Shipowner Agreement

M

arine and fire safety equipment leader VIKING Life-Saving Equipment and Topaz Energy and Marine, a leading offshore support vessel company, today jointly announced the signing of a USD multi-million, 10-year combined fixed price and exchange service agreement for liferafts. Under the terms of the contract, VIKING will upgrade all of Topaz’s current liferafts and manage the ongoing servicing and certification of Topaz’s liferaft fleet. “This agreement significantly enhances our ability to operate safely, which is a top priority for Topaz and for our clients” says Topaz CEO, René Kofod-Olsen. The offshore-focused company enjoyed a 2013 year free of lost-time accidents and has won several safety awards recognizing its leadership in safe operations and employee protection. The new agreement further strengthens Topaz’s health and safety credentials, raising the bar in an increasingly competitive market. “Topaz doesn’t do things halfway,” says Henrik Uhd Christensen, VIKING’s CEO. “Their commitment to safety manifests itself in a systematic, well-planned approach to protecting their employees. With the new agreement they have managed two things at once: lifting overall safety to a new level; and introducing predictable cost-efficiencies.” “After thoroughly researching the market, we felt confident taking this step. Their extensive servicing network matched our needs and the high reliability of the VIKING products, timely servicing of the liferafts and standardization of the process in line with global best practice was very convincing,” explained René Kofod-Olsen. “The agreement will help to protect our track record and ensure even better safety for the future.” Henrik Uhd Christensen sees the new agreement as a good example of what can be accomplished when shipowners realize the advantages of putting safety equipment provision and management in the hands of his company. He points to VIKING’s status not only as a high-quality manufacturer and servicing provider, but also to the responsible reputation the company has built up over many years in the marketplace. “This is a text-book example of the value VIKING has spent the last two years bringing to the offshore industry, combining top-quality safety equipment with flexible servicing concepts at predictable costs. We’re very proud to be working with an insightful company like Topaz that shares our commitment to maritime safety and operating efficiency.”

The AQUA Blue freshwater generator.

The AQUA Blue freshwater generator The AQUA Blue freshwater generator has an optimized process that uses just half the seawater of other freshwater generators. This minimizes pipework and allows the installation of smaller seawater pumps, which reduces both installation costs and energy consumption.

Application AQUA Blue uses vacuum distillation to convert seawater into high-quality fresh water for domestic and process utilization. By providing a constant supply of low-salinity water and continuously controlling the water quality, it eliminates the need for bunker water.

The process is based on unique 3-in-1 plate technology, which enables desalination in a single plate pack with one type of titanium plate. In AQUA Blue, this pioneering technology is combined with a wide range of enhancements for easier installation and simpler operation.

AQUA Blue is designed for start-and-forget operation in periodically unmanned engine rooms and other automated operations. It is suitable for installation on ships and rigs, as well as in remote onshore locations.

Since the plate pack contains the process vacuum, AQUA Blue has no outer shell and is smaller than other freshwater generators. Its construction is robust, with duplex piping and

can all be used as heating media.

4% year-on-year growth in total economic output, 22% growth since 2008 despite the economic crisis Greeceremains the third most popular cruise destination in Europe. With more positive economic outlook Greek cruise industry has “huge growth potential”

Cruise industry’s economic contribution sets all-time high in Europe The cruise industry continues to play its part in helping Europe’s economy emerge from the economic downturn bydelivering another strong year of growth in 2013. Figures released by CLIA Europe have revealed that the cruise industry’s economic output in Europe reached €39.4 billion in 2013, an all-time high, up from €37.9 billion in 2012. The direct expenditures generated by the industry reached €16.2 billion, up from €15.5 billion in 2012. In terms of employment generation, in 2013 the cruise industry accounted for 339,417 jobsamounting to €10.5 billion in employee compensation, 4% more than in 2012. Three major factors largely account for the cruise industry’s strong year-on-year growth: an increase in European sourcedpassengers; a surge in the number of cruise passengers embarking from European ports; and European shipyards’ continued dominance of the global cruise ship-building business. According to CLIA Europe’s 2014 Economic Contribution Report, an estimated 6.4 million European residents booked a cruise holiday in 2013, representing a 3.6% increase over 2012 and accounting for 30% of all cruise passengers worldwide. Europe is also a major destination for cruise passengers and ships from around the world, attracting substantial tourism investment and spending. Thus the number of passengers embarking on their cruises from European ports reached 6 million in 2013, i.e. a 5.2% increase over 2012. Around 5 million of these were European nationals, with the remaining 1 million coming from third countries.

European shipyards, which build most of the world’s stateof-the-art cruise liners, enjoyed a 4.7% increase in their revenue. In 2013, cruise lines spent €4.03 billion on new builds and refurbishments in Europe, the second annual increase following a period of retrenchment. Currently, including deliveries scheduled for the first half of 2014, European shipyards are under contract to build 24 cruise ships with a combined value of €12.1 billion through to 2017. Pierfrancesco Vago, CLIA Europe’s Chairman, said: “The positive results achieved this year reaffirm Europe’s position as a dynamic hub at the core of the global cruise industry, being the second most important market worldwide. The cruise industry keeps generating great economic benefits for Europeduring this crucial period of recovery, producing much-needed employment for European citizens as well asnew business for its industries and revenue for its states.” Robert Ashdown, CLIA Europe’s Secretary General, said: “Despite the difficult economic circumstances of 2013, over 6 million Europeans enjoyed cruising last year, more than double the number of a decade ago. Cruising also helpsincrease the number of tourists visiting Europe, with one million third-country nationals embarking on a cruise from a European port in 2013, as well as continuing to ensure Europe remains the global leader for cruise shipbuilding, with 24 new cruise ships scheduled for delivery by 2017.Beyond these hard economic facts, it is important to remember that cruising remains one of the safest, most affordable and memorable vacation experiences available today.” Greece has maintained its rank-

ing as the third most popular destination in Europe, with 4.6 million passenger visits in 2013. Greek ports, including Santorini, Corfu, and Mykonos, are among the most popular ports of call in Europe, and Piraeus ranked fifth among all European home ports, with a throughput of 1.3 million passengers, up almost 1% on 2012. With its hundreds of thousands of tourists per year, the cruise industry makes a significant contribution to the Greek economy. In 2013 the direct economic contribution in Greece was €574 million, the seventh highest in Europe, and the cruise industry generated over 11,000 jobs. This was despite difficulties facing the Greek economy, which contracted by 3.9% in 2013, following several years of crisis. Kyriakos Anastassiadis, CEO of LOUIS Cruises and Member of CLIA Europe’s Executive Committee, said: “With its incredible cultural heritage and natural beauty, Greece remains a key market for the European cruise industry. Thanks to the first signs of economic recovery in Greece and a more positive economic outlook, we are now cautiously optimistic for the future of the Greek cruise industry, which has a huge potential for growth. “We are committed to tap further into the Greek market’s potential and we will work with local, national and European authorities to overcome the hurdles that are still hampering cruise investment and operations in the country, from port fees to poor infrastructure development. Together we can boost the cruise industry in Greece and make further significant contributions to growth and jobs.”

Key 2013 figures released by CLIA Europe:

• 43 cruise lines domiciled in Europe, operating 125 cruise ships with a capacity of around 145,000 lower berths. • A further 73 vessels with a capacity of around 104,000 lower berths deployed in Europe by 24 non-European lines. • €39.4 billion in total output. • €16.2 billion in direct spending by cruise lines and their passengers and crew. • 339,417 jobs. • €10.5 billion in employee compensation. • €574 million indirect economic contribution in Greece (seventh highest in Europe). • Piraeus is fifth most popular home port in Europe (fourth in the Med) - with a throughput of 1.3 million passengers, up almost 1% on 2012. • Greek ports are among the most popular ports of call in Europe with Santorini, Corfu and Mykonos taking 3 of the top 11 most popular ‘port of call’ ports in Europe. • The cruise industry generated over 11,000 jobs in Greece in 2013.

The scope of work undertaken alongside included steel hatch cover repairs, which consisted of the renewal of damaged top plate. In addition the yard carried out non-destructive testing, as required by Class, including Hatch Internal Stiffening and preservation works after the repairs. The visit of the 39,241 dwt, 2006-built Irene’s Rainbow drew strong positive owner feedback, according to Gibdock’s Greek representative, Hellenic Industrial and Marine Agencies Managing Director Alkis Koukis. “This was the first Tsakosowned vessel to be repaired in

Gibraltar and the company has said that it would have no hesitation in using the yard again in the future. This could be the start of a long term relationship.” Gibdock’s geographic location was a factor in the contract being awarded, but it was the

already looking forward to the next cooperation.” The Irene’s Rainbow contract could also pave the way for further orders from the Greek shipping community, Mr Koukis believes. “Tsakos is an organisation with high standards, and

yard’s professionalism that impressed the Greek owner, says Mr Koukis. “Our client wanted repairs to be carried out quickly and for the vessel to be redelivered on time. The workmanship was outstanding and Tsakos is

to get glowing reports from them will encourage other Greek owners to consider Gibdock for their ship repair and maintenance requirements.” Gibdock is targeting the Greek market as one with consider-

able potential for the future. Managing Director, Richard Beards, says: “We were delighted to have the chance to show Tsakos what we can do and look forward to working with them again in the future. We are receiving more enquires from Greek owners for a mix of vessel types, and we are optimistic that these enquiries will translate into some firm projects later this year.” Tsakos Columbia Shipmanagement (TCM) provides management, operation and crewing services for a diversified marine fleet consisting of tanker, container and dry cargo vessels. ABB wins over $20 million orders in first quarter for offshore vessels

Advanced power system maximizes operational flexibility and safety for new generation vessels

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won contracts worth in excess of $20 million to supply electrical power and propulsion systems for two next generation offshore vessels. The first vessel, of ULSTEIN SX165 design, is being constructed at Ulstein Verft in Norway for Island Ventures 11, the joint venture set up in 2012 by the leading US and Norwegian owners Edison Chouest Offshore and Island Offshore, whose advanced subsea service vessels provide high quality solutions to the offshore oil industry. At 28 meters wide and 145.7 meters long, and with accommodation for 200 people, the SX165 will be the largest vessel constructed by Ulstein Verft and is due for delivery in Q3 2015. It is equipped with two cranes that can lift 400 tons and 140 tons respectively, and has three separate engine rooms to provide extreme operational reliability. ABB is to supply an advanced complete power and diesel electric system package comprising

medium voltage generators, switchboards, transformers, frequency converters and motors to provide reliable and fuel efficient propulsion. Health, safety and the environment have been a key focus in the design of the vessel and ABB’s scope of supply reflects this through its advanced power system, which is capable of achieving the

for optimal subsea operations including top hole drilling, light well intervention, subsea construction and inspection, maintenance and repair work. ABB will supply an advanced complete power and diesel electric system package comprising medium voltage generators, switchboards including power management system,

requirements needed to run the system in closed ring in DP3. The second vessel, for Island Offshore, features the innovative Rolls-Royce UT 777 design

transformers, frequency converters and motors. ABB will also supply complete fire & gas monitoring and control systems for fire and gas detection.

In addition, both power distribution and propulsion systems will be monitored by ABB’s remote diagnostic system (RDS), which helps to reduce repair time of installations and improve operational safety when reducing the need for on-site visits by providing immediate 24/7 assistance from a global technical center. The second vessel will be constructed at Kawasaki Heavy Industries in Japan and delivery is scheduled for 2017. “ABB’s advanced power system and remote diagnostic system will maximize the operational flexibility and safety.” said Heikki Soljama, head of ABB’s Business Unit Marine and Cranes. “We look forward to cooperating in the projects and to delivering high quality services to these pioneering new ships.” ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 150,000 people.

TIPS FOR THE OPERATOR by ABB

Don’t worry about dry cleaning! Article by Norbert Mlekusch Periodical dry cleaning is the most effective and economical method of cleaning turbo charger turbines on two-stroke engines. Providing the recommended materials (e. g. nutshells), and also original spare parts, are always used, ABB is confident that no erosion of the turbine parts will occur as a result of this method of cleaning. ABB bases this assurance on extensive field experience and on the fact that since dry cleaning lasts no more than 20 seconds, even if it is performed 250 times a year the turbine parts will be subjected to impact

by the cleaning material for less than 2 hours. This is negligible compared with the yearly running time of about 6,000 hours. Erosion due to particles in the ex haust gas usually occurs on small segments of the turbine diffuser and outer hoop of the nozzle ring, equal to about 15 to 25 % of the total circumference. The wear starts more or less opposite the single radial gas inlet and then continues clockwise around the turbine (viewed from the turbine side). The tips of the turbine blades can also be affected, with all of them showing equal signs of wear.

RINA Services expands in Tunisia through a new laboratory in Tunis The RINA Services international expansion strategy continues through the acquisition of an agri-food analysis laboratory in Tunis. The lab, called Lab21, covers 600 square metres and is known in the area of North Africa as a highly specialised laboratory for microbiological, chemical and physical analyses on food products, water and raw materials. Accredited according to the ISO/IEC 17025 Standard, Lab21 operates in Tunisia through recognised skilled personnel and numbers among its clients both local and multinational organisations. One of the advantages of this laboratory is that it has an extensive network

of centres which enables it to take samples and analyse them from anywhere in the country. Set up in 2001 by a multidisciplinary team of experts, Lab21 is the evolution of the Department of Health and Food Microbiology Laboratory established in 1985 and it is now 70% owned by RINA Services. The experience acquired over the years has turned the laboratory into a point of reference of the sector, able to offer clients services ranging from on-site tests to exportation. Today, integration of the skills and know-how of the agri-food certification laboratories, already part of RINA, and the newly-acquired centre open the door to new opportunities. “Tunisia is an expanding

country where the agri-food business is already a considerably structured sector which can claim a number of excellent products” - said Andrea Devoti, Business Development Manager Consumer Goods Testing & Services - “Lab 21 is just the first step by RINA Services in this country: our contribution will consist in assisting national producers to achieve the highest quality standards at international level as well as helping Italian companies based in Tunisia to protect their own products”. The recent and increasingly more frequent exchanges related to investment plans between Italy and Tunisia have made it necessary to establish a product certification standardisation

process which, together with strict quality control activities, aims to ensure the products can be exported anywhere in the world. An increasing number of international and multinational companies are choosing to invest in Tunisia, which offers more and more prospects for growth, in terms of both potential of the production sites and the excellent, already developed, products of the territory. Not only agri-food, but also health and tourism, among others, are the drivers of this mechanism. Many of the requests for physical-chemistry analyses on water, food, cosmetics, thalassotherapy and dialysis water come from hotels, tourist and cruise facilities and hospitals.

Marine rebound strengthens RINA results

International engineering, testing, certification and classification group RINA has reported improved results for 2013. Its performance was strengthened by an upturn in marine activities and a drive to improve efficiency and drive down costs. RINA turnover for 2013 increased 4 per cent to 294m euros, while EBITDA was up 6 per cent to 37.2m euros. Ugo Salerno, RINA Chairman and CEO says, “Returning confidence in the global marine markets and a new management team which took on their responsibilities with enthusiasm at all levels meant the group exceeded expectations in 2013. In 2013 we passed a turning point, both for RINA and for the global economy. We saw confidence returning across almost all sectors and in all regions of the global economy. Crucially, we also saw confidence building in RINA’s ability to take advantage of the opportunities which the improving economy presents.” In the ship classification sector RINA Services’ classed fleet grew to 4,761 vessels totalling

33.5m gt. The fleet ended the year well balanced across the bulk, tanker and passenger sectors. 231 new ships built to RINA class totalling 6.1m gt joined the classed fleet. Shipowners who had experienced RINA’s service moved significant numbers of ships in service into RINA class during 2013. These included twentyone Chinese-owned vessels and seventy-nine Greek-owned vessels. Shipowners responding to better markets began ordering ships again and that strengthened RINA Services’ order book worldwide. The year ended with RINA Services’ newbuilding order book totalling 650 ships of 4.8m gt. Twenty-five of these are passenger vessels, including some major cruise ships. Of special interest were new orders for two 620-passenger

40,350 gt cruise ships to be built at Fincantieri for Seabourn Cruises and Silverseas under RINA Class and two 3,500-passenger 124,000 gt cruise ships to be built at MHI, Japan for Costa/Aida, with dual RINA/ DNV-GL class. Says Salerno, “Outside the marine sector we had a busy year of growth and diversification. That led to the acquisition of two smaller certification businesses, and at the year end, to taking a major shareholding in CSM, a leading material’s technology company. CSM gives RINA high level skills and technologies in testing, analysis and materials which will serve us across all industries, especially oil and gas. Further growth through acquisition is expected for 2014 following an initial investment of 25m euros into the group in

2014 by Intesa Sanpaolo and VEI Capital.” RINA also bore down on costs and improved internal performance during 2013. Says Salerno, “Clarity in our structure is an important component of growth. It enables all our colleagues to see their responsibilities clearly and it enables us to drive the exact services our clients need to where they need them. That is why we made a clear division during 2013 between our E and TIC services. All our consulting Engineering services were consolidated under the D’Appolonia brand and all our Testing, Inspection and Certification services are concentrated under RINA Services and its subsidiaries. That clarity helps us streamline our processes and makes it easier for clients to find the service they need.”

RINA tackles ocean noise pollution International classification society RINA has acted to tackle noise pollution of the seas by developing a voluntary notation which will apply to vessels for which efforts have been made to mitigate underwater noise. Paolo Moretti, Head of the Marine Business Line, RINA Services, says, “Noise is the new pollution. The international community has raised concern that the underwater noise generated by commercial shipping may have negative consequences on marine life,

especially marine mammals. RINA is tackling that with a new voluntary notation, DOLPHIN, which gives shipowners a clear option to specify commercial vessels which have implemented solutions to minimize radiated underwater noise.” IMO has recently published MEPC Circ. 833 “Guidelines For The Reduction Of Underwater Noise From Commercial Shipping To Address Adverse Impacts On Marine Life” which sets out advice on design and operational solutions that may be adopted to reduce underwater radiated noise. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has developed the (ISO/

PAS) 17208-1 – Acoustics – Quantities and procedures for description and measurement of underwater sound from ships – Part 1: General requirements for measurements in deep water and ISO/DIS 16554 – Ship and marine technology – Measurement and reporting of underwater sound radiated from merchant ships – deep-water measurement. RINA has combined these standards into the DOLPHIN notation, which will be applicable from 1 July 2014. It has been developed in response to demand from clients who operate in sensitive marine areas and who wish to demonstrate that they have acted to mitigate

the impact of their vessels. The notation will only be granted to vessels which comply fully with both sets of regulations. The notation will give requirements on instrumentation, site and procedures to carry out the measurements, and will describe the information and post-processing activities necessary for reporting. Limits both for when the ship is underway and quiet ship operational modes are established. RINA Services is able to provide sound radiation evaluation services, including underwater sound radiation, and measurements and design recommendations to reduce aerial noise and underwater noise.

Greek owner orders Green Dolphin 84s design bulk carrier Greek shipowner W Marine Inc. has ordered a series of post-Panamax bulk carriers based on the Green Dolphin 84S design. The design was developed by the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI) with support from DNV GL. Managing Diriector of W Marine Inc., Nikolaos Triantafyllakis says: “The aim of the company, in line with the wishes of its founder, Yiannis Sarantitis, is to build up a homogeneous fleet of vessels ranging in size between Panamax to post-Panamax. The addition of the Green Dolphin 84S will substantially enhance the commercial profile of our fleet and give us a competitive edge within that segment of the dry bulk market.” The Green Dolphin 84S is the third design in the Green Dolphin series of bulk carriers designed by SDARI, with assistance from DNV GL in the development process. The shallow draft design is able to lift larger cargo lots on a shallower draft which, combined with a fuel efficient design, makes it more efficient in a highly competitive market. W Marine Inc. employed DNV GL to develop the operating profile, analyse the hydrodynamic performance of the hull shape, calculate the propulsion efficiency and estimate the fuel oil consumption. Mr. Triantafyllakis adds: “It’s a big investment, so you want to reduce the risk by assessing performance and operational dynamics before you place the order. By evaluating the design, DNV GL gave us the confidence in the vessel’s performance and capabilities.” Mr. Michael Aasland, DNV GL Maritime Business Director for Bulk Carriers, gave credit to the co-operation with W Marine Inc., and the work done by SDARI: “It is very rewarding to work with an owner who sees value in exploring new opportunities, and interesting to note that our scope of work with SDARI has shifted from optimisation to verification.” adding: “It is also encouraging to see that our work has helped to reduce some of the risks for an owner involved in ordering a new design.” The Green Dolphin 84S follows on from the very successful Green Dolphin 38 design, released at Posidonia in 2012, of which almost one hundred have been ordered, and the new Green Dolphin 575, released at Marintec China 2013, which recently received its first orders. Harmonising LNG Bunkering in a safe and efficient manner

DNV GL is launching a new Recommended Practice (RP) on LNG Bunkering in the Middle East & South Asia. The launch in Doha is in conjunction with Qatar’s announcement that it is going to establish a strategy of supplying LNG as a marine fuel in Qatar and the other countries forming the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Qatar’s entry as a provider of LNG for the marine industry will be a game-changer given that it is the largest single exporter of LNG globally. Concurrently launching the RP will ensure bunkering operations are predictable, safe and compatible in Qatar, across the Middle East and the rest of the world,” says Shahrin Osman, DNV GL Regional Manager Maritime Advisory Middle East & India. In the last 2-3 years, DNV GL has witnessed a significant change in the shipping industry’s opinion on the use of LNG as a marine fuel. There is no longer any doubt that LNG will become one of the major shipping fuels. A few weeks ago, the milestone of 100 LNG-fuelled

ships either already operating or as confirmed newbuilds was passed. Whilst these impressive developments have been ongoing, the development of international standardisation has lagged behind. The first step in addressing that gap was the publication of the ISO Committee’s draft guideline on LNG Bunkering in June 2013. As a further development and on the basis of the ISO principles, DNV GL has prepared a Recommended Practice for LNG Bunkering, the overall objective of which is to establish the guidelines and recommendations required to protect people and the environment during the development and operation of LNG bunker facilities. The achievement of safe and reliable operations is based on international laws and standards, practices in similar industries and DNV GL’s extensive experience in the entire LNG value chain. The RP provides an internationally accepted starting point for any development and safe operation of bunkering facilities.

DNV GL expects the market to develop and that the ship types using LNG will increase from short-sea to long-haul trade. There will also be a greater need for harmonisation to ensure safety and efficiency in the bunkering process worldwide, primarily to safeguard those who are involved and uphold the LNG industry’s excellent safety track record. “Another important reason for launching the RP is to minimise the barriers to entry in this market by establishing common equipment and procedural requirements worldwide. This will allow more players to enter the market so that individual ships are not limited to bunkering in just a few locations,” adds Mr Osman. According to Mr Abdul Aziz Al Muftah, Director of Industrial Cities, Qatar Petroleum (QP) and Chairman of the Steering Committee on LNG as Fuel: “The forthcoming international environmental regulations will create a demand for more LNG-fuelled ships. Concrete initiatives will be taken by Qatar Petroleum to build

the first LNG-fuelled harbour tug for the Ras Laffan port and the first two LNG-fuelled offshore service vessels (OSVs) for QP offshore fields.” The DNV GL RP will be a useful tool for building the necessary regulatory framework to ensure safe and reliable bunkering operations for the above future LNG fuelled vessels. Over the past 14 years, DNV GL has collaborated extensively through Joint Industry Projects (JIP) and direct engagements in both the maritime and gas industries and across the entire LNG value chain to discover the feasibility of LNG bunkering in all the key shipping locations worldwide. This collaboration has been one of the keys to our success. The list of engagements covers North America, Norway, Rotterdam, Antwerp, Sweden, Australia, Korea, Singapore and Qatar to name a few locations, all of which have resulted in positive outcomes as to the feasibility and viability of having LNG supplied and bunkered as marine fuel.

DNV GL - The Future of Shipping DNV GL, the world’s leading ship classification society and a leading risk and sustainability service provider briefed the press today on the future of shipping at an event at the Posidonia exhibition in Greece. Tor Svensen, CEO, DNV GL Maritime, examined the potential and the challenges of shipping’s increasing use of connected systems to improve safety and efficiency. This new paradigm requires a different approach to testing and certification, to ensure safety and reliability while retaining a level competitive playing field. Tor Svensen presented DNV GL’s recently released report: “The Future of Shipping”. The report maps out six pathways to a future for the industry which is safer and more sustainable: safe operations of ships, advanced ship design, the connected ship, future materials, efficient shipping and low carbon energy. Meeting the challenges of the next 25 years would require not only investment in technologies, but would

require the industry learning to think about their business and operation in new ways, he said. One of those was the increasing penetration of information and communication technology (ICT) across the maritime world, what DNV GL has dubbed: “The Connected Ship”. The Connected Ship refers to the impact that the convergence of real time data transmission, high computing capacity, mathematical modeling capabilities, remote control, sensors and miniaturization will have on the shape of the industry. These new systems would have a marked impact on safety, said Svensen. “Online monitoring and decision support can lift human performance, closing the gap between safety goals and current practice. Shipping currently has a crew fatality rate ten times that of OECD best practice levels and the industry needs to target a reduction of 90% to match that level”. Shipping could draw lessons from the offshore industry, which

has developed a number of automated systems with marine applications to improve performance, Tor Svensen suggested. Remote operation is already a reality in subsea operations in the offshore industry. The end goal is to be able to deploy integrated systems, advanced navigation systems and sophisticated software that could manage smart sensor and actuator networks to maintain a vessel’s course in changing sea and weather conditions, avoid collisions, and operate the ship efficiently. “However, we must continue the development of the regimes that ensure the safety and stability of these systems. Software systems are now an integral part of safety critical barriers, but because of their modular, multi-party nature they are often not easily testable before installation and operation”, said Tor Svensen. He noted that DNV GL has already introduced requirements for the certification of software systems in the classification rules with the ISDS

(Integrated Software Dependent Systems) standard. The recent acquisition of Marine Cybernetics, a pioneer in Hardware-in-the Loop-Testing (HIL) for the marine and offshore industries demonstrated the importance of providing DNV GL’s customers a broader platform for software and systems testing, Svensen said. HIL testing is already the de-facto standard in the automotive and aviation industries for testing complex control system software. By developing an independent simulation of the dynamic systems of the vessel or drilling rig, the control software can be tested by conducting a virtual sea trial - examining how the software interacts with the simulator. Virtual tank testing is becoming more common in ship design, extending this to software enhances the quality of testing by increasing its scope and allows testing before installation, thereby reducing commissioning time.
